3. Know Your Blind Spots. Most cars have at least one line of vision that’s not clearly evident in the rearview or side mirrors. Even carefully placed mirrors often cannot cover every possible angle. Move the side mirrors far outward so that the angle of view barely overlaps the view of the rearview mirror.

4. Keep Your Hands on the Wheel. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration now advocates keeping your hands at the 9 and 3 o’clock positions instead of 10 and 2 because of air bags.
HOW TO EFFECTIVELY AND SAFELY SANITIZE A CAR • Wash hands. First and foremost, it is crucial to wash your hands before and after using the car. • Use rubbing alcohol. Solutions that contain 70 percent alcohol are effective against many viruses and bacteria. Nearly every interior surface of a vehicle can be cleaned with isopropyl alcohol.
5. Keep Up on Maintenance. Routine work on your auto, like oil changes, fluid refills and tire rotations, can make all the difference in your car’s drivability. Learn More: For further facts and tips about good driving from the experts at Driving-Tests, founded on the universal belief that everyone can be a safe driver, go to https://driving-tests.org. There, budding drivers can also learn how to pass the written test the first time.
• Avoid bleach or hydrogen peroxide. They are likely to damage a car’s upholstery. • Use soap and water: Experts say that vigorous washing with a soapand-water solution can be effective against many contaminants. Friction also can help to break down germ cells during cleaning. • Address frequently touched surfaces. Pay attention to the steering wheel, door handles, buttons, touchscreen displays, shift lever, and more when sanitizing.

1. Know Your Car. Like people, each car has a unique personality. Some features work better than others, and conditions can cause a vehicle to react a certain way. Knowing your car’s limits and behavior patterns can help you predict how it will respond in certain situations. How long does it take you to stop and how much pressure is required on the brake pedal? What’s your turn radius? Does your vehicle lean when you round a corner? Does it quake when you hit a certain speed? Knowing the answers can help you avoid accidents.

Student Malena Leastman shares her boldly-blended Zen Turtle
Banishing Stress with Art at Churchville-Chili Middle School

Maren Freece and her delicately patterned turtle
It’s been a tough year for students everywhere, but at ChurchvilleChili’s Middle School some of them have discovered a fun, easy way to relax and be creative. Seventh-graders in teacher Charmagne Dodd’s art class learned how to use the art of Zentangle® to create beautiful patterns and enjoy the focused mindfulness of creative process.
possible,” she said. “I used different shades of brown on its shell so that it looked like it was facing away from the sun.”
Their art project began with a choice of several existing drawings of turtles, as this basic shape was the foundation for the real challenge. From here, students drew into the turtles with a variety of simple, repeated patterns, called “tangles.” The line art is meant to be unplanned and non-representational, growing organically, stroke by stroke.
“The project has some excellent grade-level design concepts,” said art teacher Dodd. “It reinforces previously learned skills and helps kids think more about composition. They tend to get a little lost in this–they really concentrate and enjoy the meditative properties of the evolving patterns.”
Students added color and a variety of blending techniques to finish their designs, exploring warm or cool color families, and bright or pastel shades. Every finished turtle was unique and reflective of the individual student’s personality.
As a final treat for artists, Dodd and Library Media Specialist Julia Loson collaborated on setting up a Zen Turtle art show at the Middle School library to give students an opportunity to share their work and get feedback from their peers.
While some students used a very spontaneous approach, careful organization was central to many of the overall designs. “My zentangles were planned out,” said Madelyn Pier. “On the shell, you can see that the patterns repeat every other time. I had a plan for color, too. Every cool color on the turtle is always touching a hot color.” She said that the most calming part for her was the blending. “I don’t know why, but it just made me feel relaxed.”
Enjoy this article? Check out this week’s other great story online at www.gvpennysaver.com:
Student Kaitlyn Pozzuolo visualized herself and her turtle on a warm, sunny beach. “I tried to make my turtle as realistic as

How often a puppy will need to defecate depends on the food being fed and when meals are offered. The American Kennel Club says that most puppies will need to poop shortly after a meal, anywhere from 15 minutes to a few hours. Puppies typically can hold urine a little longer overnight, but probably won’t be able to go the entire night without a potty break. Many pups can last around six hours from the last time they’ve gone out. An early-morning bathroom break will be needed, or consider penning the dog with puppy pads to catch the mess until the dog gains greater control over its bladder.

REAL ESTATE SECTION TIPS TO HELP REALIZE YOUR GOALS THIS YEAR Make note of potential obstacles. Recognizing potential hurdles in advance of their appearance can help you overcome these obstacles and stay the course toward achieving your goals. For example, men and women hoping to lose weight can look ahead to occasions that might compromise their efforts, such as a loved one’s wedding or backyard barbecue. Recognizing these obstacles in advance gives people a chance to develop a plan to overcome them. In the weight loss example, men and women can choose vegetarian options from reception menus or resolve to avoid alcohol, which tends to be high in calories.
The winning pet will have $50 donated to a local animal shelter in his/her name.

DEAR JAMIE: One of the bright spots in this pandemic is the way that individuals have responded to help each other and fill the needs of tens of thousands -- maybe millions -- of pets. Shelters in many parts of the country have opened or expanded food pantries for pets to help owners keep their dogs and cats healthy and fed. Napa County, California, for example, transformed two empty shipping containers into a community pet pantry offering free supplies this summer. (Search for “Napa County’s new pet pantry” to learn more.) In Tuscon, Cody’s Friends, a charity started in 2010 by a 10-year-old boy, has seen a huge surge of demand for pet food and is distributing to area shelters and clinics as fast as possible (https://codysfriends.org). And in North Carolina, the Davidson County Animal Alliance extended its holiday pet food collection drive because there was so much need. If you are struggling to pay for pet food for any reason, contact your local shelter first and ask if there is a pet food program available. You may not be able to pick up food directly from a shelter; it may be distributed at a different location. Contact local food banks, churches and municipal offices. And of course, search online or on Facebook for these services as well. Also, if you’ve been waiting to donate food, pet supplies or cash to a local shelter or charity, now is your moment to shine. Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

RESOLVE TO WEAR CLOTHES THAT FIT IN THE YEAR AHEAD Bra measurements are hard to come by, no doubt thanks in part to the nature of getting measured in such an intimate area of the body. Many people feel the dawn of a new year provides an opportunity to clean the slate and begin anew. That notion can be applied in various ways, including around the house. Cleaning the slate at home may involve reducing clutter around the house. Clutter can gradually overtake a home’s interior, turning a once pristine home into one overwhelmed with nonessential items. As intimidating as clutter can seem, discarding it is easier than it may appear.

Lilies The flower most commonly associated with funeral services in the popular mind is the lily. Lilies are often interpreted as a symbol of the innocence that has been restored to the soul of the departed. A white stargazer lily symbolizes sympathy and any type of white lily expresses majesty and purity.
Milton “Newtie” Newton January 6, 2021
Milton Newton, 92, of Dansville, New York, entered eternal rest on January 6, 2021. He was the son of Morley and Edna (Coe) Newton and the younger brother of Malcolm Newton (late) of Rochester, New York. His family moved to Dansville in 1934 and he considered it his hometown for the rest of his life. He was married to Suzanne (Fredenburg) in 1946 and celebrated 75 years of marriage. Milton worked for the NYSEG for 33 years, earning several commendations for his service. But it was as an athlete and coach that he derived his greatest satisfaction. He was a star halfback in football and was offered a full scholarship to Alfred University. He returned home and organized The Martina’s Wildcats semipro football team which competed all over Western New York. In addition, he lettered in high school baseball, basketball and track, winning the 100 yard dash and high jump in the Livingston County meet. Newtie also won a county championship in ping pong. He was later inducted into the Dansville High School Sports Wall of Fame, joining his son, Rick, who had been inducted 2 years before. He also played local town team baseball in the late 1940s and fast pitch softball in the 1950s with the RapidGro team, winning several local league championships. In the early 1970s he coached and played for the Perry and Thompson Ford team, winning a championship at almost 50 years old. Newt transitioned into tennis in 1980 and won several local, county and regional tournaments in both singles and doubles. Newt was well-known for his interest and coaching ability in several youth league sports including baseball, basketball and tennis. In Little League, his 1960 All Star team went to the New York State tournament in Waverly, New York and his 1962 Babe Ruth All Star Team went to the State Championship in Lake Placid, New York. He coached tennis for the Village Summer Youth program for years and served as assistant and later head coach of the DHS varsity tennis team. Newt was always dedicated to his family, encouraging his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in sports and academic achievements. He is survived by his wife, Suzanne (Fredenburg); son, Rick (Maureen) Newton and daughters, Karen Gillman and Stacie (Robert) Pickel; Grandchildren: Christopher (Sandy) Newton, Bryan (Kelly) Newton and Amanda Finn; Robert Gillman, Jennifer (Phil) Reinagel, Ryan (Amber) Gillman and Amelia Gillman (Nick Jahn); Aaron (Jill) Pickel, Brendon Pickel and the late Jason Pickel. Great-Grandchildren: Averie and Ainsley Newton, Jack and Mallory Newton, Sean and Mary Colleen Finn; Natalie Gillman; Christian, Tessa, Aubree (“Boomer”) Reinagel; (soon to be) Willow Gillman; Taylor Jahn. (585) 728-2100 Although inevitable, death is an emotional subject that’s difficult to discuss. While estate planning can make people uncomfortable, it is an essential part of securing assets for future generations and can make a death in the family easier for loved ones to handle. Estate planning is an umbrella term that refers to a host of things that must be done prior to a person’s death, including writing a will and even making funeral arrangements. Estate planning attempts to eliminate financial uncertainties and maximize the value of an estate, and allows men and women to state their wishes with regard to long-term healthcare and guardianship for their children. When done right, estate planning can prevent family feuds and ensure that the deceased’s estate stays in the hands of family rather than being relegated to the government. Estate planning can be a complex process, so men and women should seek help to ensure the process goes smoothly.

AT-HOME NUTRITION AND COOKING WITH KIDS RECIPES FOR FUN: If you’re preparing a meal, it could be a good time to teach children of reading age how to review a recipe. Evaluating ingredients to learn how food transforms from raw to cooked or how a dish is created can help kids learn kitchen skills. FOOD GROUPS FOCUS: Get kids involved in making dinner by setting a rule that each food group must be represented. Give them a warmup activity by asking which food groups are found in family favorites like chicken soup, lasagna or meatloaf. Asking kids to guess which ingredients are used in these dishes and identifying which food group each ingredient belongs to can help them understand dietary balance.

(NAPSI)—Here’s an exotic twist that transforms everyday cheesecake into something sophisticated, elegant and worthy of your holiday table. Pureed sweet potatoes, five spice powder and candied ginger star in a dessert that’s easy to make and can be enjoyed yearround. The sweet potatoes not only provide luscious texture and flavor, they prevent the cake from cracking—so it’s deliciously decadent and practically foolproof. Give it a try.
Requests for nominations will commence upon opening of the caucus. If there is a contest, voting will be conducted by paper ballot for 1 hour after the close of nominations.

NOW HERE’S A TIP In a pinch, you can use toothpaste to scrub your faucet in the bathroom.
NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * N.B. of Texas, writes: “I never could find the time to exercise. When I got home, I had to rush to get supper, etc., and afterward all I wanted to do was plop down and watch television. Then I got an exercise mat and a stationary bicycle. When I couldn’t work out very long, I worked out during commercials. I’ve lost 3 pounds so far!” Great idea for all those with fitness on their New Year’s Resolution lists, Nancy! * Two wonderful tips came in from G.K. of Minnesota: “To protect floors from being damaged by chairs being pushed around, glue rounds of carpeting beneath the chair legs. They are easily removed for replacing as they wear down. Also, when making bread or rolls, warm the flour in the oven or microwave so as not to chill the butter. The dough will rise faster.” * B.W. of Colorado swears by brake cleaner to get rid of bad spots on carpets. “Regular automotive brake cleaner on the spot and a clean rag will remove almost all stains,” he says. * “In cold winter months, keep your robe (and slippers or whatever else) under the covers with you when you sleep. Pull it next to or over you a few minutes before you get up. It’ll be toasty and will help make the transition into the cold a little less harsh.” -- B.M. in New York * If your animals try to get out when you go into or out of the house, keep some toys or treats in your pocket or near the door to throw across the room, giving you a few seconds to slip in or out.

RECOGNIZE AND AVOID YOUTH SPORTS INJURIES Periostitis: Periostitis is commonly known as “shin splints.” This is an overuse injury that occurs in athletes who are engaged in activities that involve rapid deceleration. Periostitis causes inflammation of the band of tissue that surrounds bones known as the periosteum, and typically affects people who repetitively jump, run or lift heavy weights. To head off potential pain in the shins, young athletes can gradually build up their tolerance for physical activity. Supportive shoes or orthotic inserts may also help. Incorporating cross-training into a regimen also can work.

Give Back
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Office Test Alone Can’t Diagnose COPD ---
And Feel Rewarded
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a healthy 70-year-old woman. The only prescription medication I take is for dry eyes. I recently visited my new primary physician for the first time, and she had me do a breathing test, where I exhaled into a tube to measure airflow. I was told to breathe deeply and exhale completely into the tube three times in succession. It took less than a minute to complete. It is apparently a routine test she orders for new patients. She then told me I have COPD, on the basis of that test alone. She asked if I had ever smoked or been exposed to secondhand smoke. That was her only question -coughing or shortness of breath was never mentioned. I have never smoked, but my father was a smoker when I was growing up. I actually do have a slightly productive cough most mornings. I probably walk about 10 miles a week, and I do notice some shortness of breath on long uphill sections, though I can walk briskly in level areas for miles with no problem. She said it is not advanced enough to require an inhaler at this time. I am bothered by this very easy “diagnosis” on the basis of one simple test. I wonder if I should ask to be referred to a pulmonologist for a more thorough evaluation. -- O.P. ANSWER: The test your doctor performed is called office spirometry, and it is useful for monitoring known pulmonary diseases, especially COPD and asthma. However, by itself, it is inadequate to make the diagnosis of COPD, which I am not sure you have. The diagnosis of COPD is made in people with persistent respiratory symptoms, usually shortness of breath or coughing. Spirometry will usually show obstruction to airflow. Formal pulmonary function testing, which is an extensive process taking an hour or so with a skilled and experienced technician, is ideal for determining severity. The problem with getting a breathing test in someone who has no significant symptoms is that you can find someone whose test results are at or just below the lower limit of normal, and the diagnosis is unclear. The prognosis for people with mild airway obstruction but with no symptoms of COPD is much better than for people with COPD and who continue to smoke. For this reason, using spirometry as a screening test for everyone is not recommended. Without knowing the exact results of your spirometry, I suspect you do not have COPD, given your absence of smoking and your extremely mild symptoms. GO GREEN WITH YOUR FITNESS ROUTINE Exercise in the great outdoors. Fitness enthusiasts can reduce their energy consumption by exercising outdoors whenever possible. Replace running in place on a treadmill with running through a park or on a beach outside. Men and women who work out in their homes can take the free weights outdoors to the backyard on nice days, allowing Mother Nature instead of the electric company to supply the lighting.

THE HIDDEN BENEFITS OF WATER Water helps the gastrointestinal tract. Water can help maintain normal bowel function. When the body lacks sufficient fluid, the colon will pull water from stools in an effort to stay hydrated. That can lead to constipation, a condition in which people experience difficulty emptying their bowels. By drinking enough water, people can ensure their colon will not have to pull water from stools to stay hydrated, thereby helping them stay regular.

HILLSIDE IS HIRING!
ACHIEVE A BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE Learn to manage your time. One of the keys to creating a worklife balance is to hone your time management skills. Effective time management can help you fit more in without feeling rushed or anxious. Start by determining just how much time you need to perform certain tasks. Then divide up the day accordingly. You may find that by waking up an hour earlier each day, you achieve a lot more without affecting your well-being. Quiet time at home in the morning can be a prime time to fit in a workout or catch up on paperwork.

RN Care Manager Clinical Patient Service Advocate HOW TO MAKE YOUR OFFICE MORE ECO-FRIENDLY Cut back on printing. Printing documents used to be the most effective way to share them with coworkers and clients. But nowadays printing is one of the least efficient and least eco-friendly ways to share documents. Instead of printing documents to show coworkers, create PDFs and email the PDFs instead. And rather than mailing contracts to prospective clients, email contracts that accept e-signatures, ultimately storing the contracts on your file server rather than in a dusty old filing cabinet.
