HOME IMPROVEMENT

Butler HOME IMPROVEMENTS, LLC Remodeling & Repair Service Over 25 years experience

Add insulation. M any older homes are poorly insulated. But according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, adding insulation can reduce energy costs by as much as 50 percent. Installing insulation can be tricky, especially if insulation w as not originally included in your home, as is sometimes the case w ith older homes. Insulation can become damp and prove ineffective if installed improperly. Damp insulation also may contribute to mold grow th and rot in the home’s framing. Older homes may be lacking adequate insulation around attics, craw l spaces, basements, heating and cooling ducts, and w ater pipes. Cover your w ater heater w ith an insulated w ater heater blanket so the heater retains more heat and consumes less energy to heat the w ater.

COVID-19 UPDATE NYS What You Need To Know

Step 1: Determine eligibility and schedule an appointment. Vaccines are available at pharmacies, hospitals and through local health departments statewide – please contact your provider of choice to schedule your vaccine appointment. Additionally, there is a network of State-run sites distributing vaccines statewide – to determine eligibility and schedule appointments at New York State-run vaccination sites only, use the Am I Eligible app. You can also call the New York State COVID-19 Vaccination Hotline at 1-833-NYS-4-VAX (1-833-697-4829). Step 2: Complete the Vaccine Form. Once you have a confirmed appointment, you must complete the New York State COVID-19 Vaccine Form. This form can be completed online and you will receive a submission ID, or can be completed at your vaccination site. (We encourage New Yorkers to complete the form ahead of time.)

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Accessing Your FREE Credit Report For years we’ve been able to get one free credit report per year from each of the three credit bureaus. Right now, we’re able to get a free one each week until the middle of April. Why? Their generosity is likely due to the astronomical number of scams coming out of the COVID crisis. The number of unemployed crooks has surely gone up, making your good credit too enticing to pass up. Go to www.usa.gov/credit-reports to learn more about credit reports, scores, freezes and errors. If you want to try to get all three reports at once, call 1-877-322-8228 at the Annual Credit Report location. The others are: Equifax: 1-888-548-7878 or 1-800-685-1111; equifax. com. Experian: 1-888-397-3742; experian.com. TransUnion: 1-800-916-8800 or 888-909-8872; transunion.com. Once you get your report, either online or in the mail, study it carefully. Look for accounts that you never opened and the names of people you don’t know. Be sure all the information is correct. If you need to file a complaint, go to ftc.gov/complaint or call 1-877-FTCHELP (1-877-382-4357). (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson

Drive Thru Chicken & Biscuits Dinner Thursday, January 28, 2021 At the Truck House Franklin Street, Dansville

Serving 5-7pm Tickets Available from any Fireman

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Jan. 23, 1941, Charles Lindbergh, a national hero since his nonstop solo flight across the Atlantic, testifies before Congress and suggests that the U.S. negotiate a neutrality pact with Hitler. He publicly denounced “the British, the Jewish and the Roosevelt Administration.”

38 years of experience in the Medicare market.

* If your sneakers are smelly, try this: Stick a sheet of fabric softener in each one. Let them set overnight, and most of them time, the smell will be gone by morning. Of course, you should rotate your tennies to help them “breathe,” since wearing your shoes day after day can foster bacteria growth -- meaning your sneaks will be really stinky.

* When you get near the end of a roll of paper towels, save it to put in your car. Pull together a kit to keep in the car with the following items: a small bottle of glass cleaner, a squeeze bottle of water, some wet wipes and the short roll of paper towels. You will always be ready for a quick on-the-road cleanup.

Medicare

Joyce Davies 170 Franklin St., Dansville, NY (585) 335-4750

* Kitchen tip: You can slice mushrooms in an egg slicer.

* “To get sheets and towels to dry faster, try adding a tennis ball to the dryer. It bounces around inside while the cycle is going, and breaks up large items that tend to crumple into a ball.” -- C.L. in Illinois

Tickets: $10.00 ea.

On Medicare already? Turning 65 or disabled? Need a supplement? Understand “EPIC”? Confused or have questions? Call or stop by to schedule an appointment.

* “If you have a bunch of picture frames that don’t match or ones that are nicked or have small cosmetic damages, just paint them. Choose a matching color for all, and you have a collection.” -- T.L. in Florida

* The kitchen and the bathroom are the worst places in the house to store medicines and vitamins. Humidity and heat can damage the properties of the compounds.

Saying Goodbye to Pandemic Stress 7 Tips for Better Self-Care in 2021 BY AMANDA DUDEK

It’s

no exaggeration to say that 2020 was a challenging year for many people. In fact, with its isolation, stress and anxiety, it is not a stretch to say it was a traumatic experience. Whether you were on the front lines as an essential worker, struggling with the isolation of extended quarantining, or somewhere in between, many of us have started this new year burdened with incredible emotional and physical fatigue. Now is the perfect time to focus on self-care with its oh-so-necessary renewal and restoration. Give yourself permission to take a break, refocus, and recharge your mind and body. Boost your wellness by incorporating something new (perhaps one of your favorite tips!) into your regular self-care routine.

1. Meditate: Meditation is an excellent means of reducing stress and restoring healthy function in the body. Practiced for thousands of years, studies show that meditation can be associated with the improvement of a variety of issues such as strengthening cognitive function, protecting against heart disease, stimulating the immune system, and reducing blood pressure as well as improving metabolism and breathing. Consider spending at least 15 minutes each day practicing mindful meditation, deep breathing, or yoga to help destress your brain.

2. Take advantage of Telemedicine: Whether you have a case of the winter blues or simply aren’t feeling like yourself, telemedicine can be a great way to see your doctor quickly and safely. The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology says telehealth, which is a broader scope of remote healthcare services than telemedicine, can utilize everything from videoconferencing, the internet, store-and-forward imaging, streaming media, and terrestrial and wireless phone communications. Also, according to the American Medical Association, nearly 75 percent of all doctor, urgent care and emergency room visits can likely be handled safely and effectively over the phone or via video. Those experiencing an emergency, COVID-19 testing and treatment, or other serious symptoms and concerns, are encouraged to seek in-person treatment right away. Want to give it a try? Call your doctor’s office to see if telemedicine is right for you.

3. Journal: Sometimes, committing your experiences and worries to paper can help you to leave them in the past and move forward. Journaling can also slow your racing thoughts, allowing you to identify and better manage concrete issues. Writing can also encourage out-of-the-box thinking and creative problem solving. Ready to write? All you need is a notebook, a pen, and a quiet, private place. Give yourself permission to jot down whatever comes to mind and resist the urge to self-edit.

4. Get up & get moving: Exercise does wonders for not only maintaining a healthy, fit body, but it also can improve mood. While this can mean visiting a gym several times a week, it doesn’t have to. Though walking might not provide the same level of intensity that fitness enthusiasts are accustomed to, the Arthritis Foundation notes the various ways walking benefits the body. Walking protects against heart disease and stroke, strengthening the heart and lowering blood pressure. It can strengthen the bones, improve mood, and in some cases, has been found to lower the risk for cognitive decline and even increase life expectancy. Always consult your

doctor before starting a new exercise routine. Whether it’s a 10-minute stroll outdoors or several weekly workouts, keeping your body moving is a great way to release stress and improve your health.

5. Try something novel: Reading can be very calming, helping to reduce stress. By losing oneself in a book, worries can melt away, says research conducted in 2009 at the University of Sussex. Studies have also shown that reading can develop neural networks in the brain that can help readers understand more complex thought. It can also improve your vocabulary, even as you get older. Consider spending even 5-10 minutes each day reading. Don’t forget, it’s absolutely okay to quit and choose another book. If you are feeling particularly ambitious, start a virtual book club! 6. Don’t “break up” with nature: When many recreational options closed temporarily during the pandemic, people spent much more time outdoors. As indoor recreational facilities reopen, it is important not to leave nature behind. The National Institutes of Health and Harvard Medical School say that, in addition to providing physical benefits, simply spending time in nature in any form can improve mental outlook, boost creativity, elevate mood due to natural light, improve concentration, and reduce stress. It may even help you sleep better. As indoor recreational facilities reopen, consider maintaining favorite outdoor activities, even simply dining outside. 7. Stay Safely Social: While it is important to protect your physical health and continue to follow masking and social distancing guidelines, it is also important to protect your mental health by finding safe ways to maintain social connections. There are many safe options to help keep isolation at bay. Consider scheduling video chats regularly, either once or twice per week. Try arranging for a large group chat on holidays. Maintain a connection with your elderly and other vulnerable loved ones by putting together care packages of supplies and treats. Deliver them in person so you can see the smiles, even if only through a window. Send uplifting messages in personalized cards to loved ones at home and in long-term care facilities. Don’t forget to let potentially isolated friends and family know they are cared for and loved. We also welcome you to drop us a note, whether by mail or email, because we always love to hear from our readers!

lipoidica. She suffers from this on her shins, as did her mother. She is not diabetic. We cannot find good information on how to rid her of this. The information we find is not about cures, but treatments that mask the symptom, such as steroids. We cannot even find a doctor that specifically treats this condition. Can you help? -- M.B. ANSWER: Periodically I get letters referencing a condition like this one that I know absolutely nothing about. Fortunately, I have the time to do a lot of reading, and I talked to several people with the condition. Here is what I found. Necrobiosis lipoidica is a rare skin disorder, usually but not always associated with diabetes. It occurs mostly in young adults (the average is 25 years old when associated with diabetes, 46 years if not), and is more common in women. It may also be associated with thyroid disorders and celiac disease. The cause is unknown. The diagnosis is made by skin biopsy. The appearance is usually of a large, variably colored and elevated patch of skin, most commonly on the shins, as your girlfriend’s is, but it can spread to other parts of the body, especially skin that has been scraped or damaged. Because necrobiosis lipoidica can occasionally transform to skin cancer, it needs careful surveillance. There is no cure for necrobiosis lipoidica. However, there are treatments that can reduce the inflammation. Steroids, either topical or injected, are the usual first choice. Topical steroids are more effective if they are given as ointment and covered with an air- and water-tight dressing. If topical steroids are not as effective, there are many other therapies that have been tried, including: the medication tacrolimus, which decreases the immune response; ultraviolet light A; antimalarial drugs (also used for autoimmune diseases); and others. The disease normally progresses slowly, then stabilizes, but it can spontaneously resolve in some people. Necrobiosis lipoidica may also ulcerate, at which point a wound care specialist may be of tremendous value. It may not be easy to find an expert dermatologist for this condition. I would start with a support group, as you can get expertise from others who have been living with this condition. I found one large group on Facebook. I read some tips on makeup and temporary tattoos for cosmetic improvement. I found two clinical trials recruiting subjects, one in Boston and one in Pennsylvania. You can find clinical trial information at clinicaltrials.gov. More good information is available at https://tinyurl.com/NLskin. ***

Papi

Hello, I am . I was born in the wild to a feral mom and was the only surviving kitten. I was 10 weeks old when my mom & dad took me indoors. I'm a busy boy, and like annoying my sister dog. My favorite toys are a foil ball, feathers on a stick, catnip mice and the window blind cords. I'm so fortunate to live in a loving home. Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

With Gratitude... On 12/23 I had the unfortunate experience of going through the ice on Loon Lake. Unlike many other fishermen, I was lucky enough to be rescued with minimal complications. That rescue involved multiple people that I am ever so grateful for. Unfortunately, I don’t remember most of them individually. I have a lot of missing memories of that day. Please forgive me if I leave anyone out. Thank you to all of the first responders that came to help me. Thank you to the Noyes Memorial Emergency Room staff for warming me up and taking all the phone calls from my frantic family members. Thank you family and friends for the prayers and get well wishes. Sorry for the scare. A special thank you to the Meyers family who opened their doors to me. NY State Trooper Matt McKinney - at the right place at the right time. Your actions go beyond words. You risked your life to save mine. I can never thank you enough for that. Spencer - there are no words. I am so proud of you. I am so thankful for you. WITH HEARTFELT GRATITUDE,

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * An outbreak of the common cold occurred at an Antarctic base after 17 weeks of complete isolation. * After high school senior Allison Closs dressed up a cardboard cutout of Danny DeVito to go with her to prom, the actor returned the favor by bringing a cardboard cutout of Allison to the set of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.” * Actual town names in the U.S. include Rabbit Hash (Kentucky), Two Egg (Florida), Ding Dong (Texas) and Bacon (Delaware).
