General eulogy preparation tips:
Home Services ____________________29
Eulogies are for the living, and for everyone at a remembrance service.
Hometown Events ____________________25
Be brief. People listen for three to five minutes. After five minutes, people stop listening.
Kidz Korner ____________________10
Do a bit of research. Talk to others. What are some childhood memories? Was there a favorite lesson learned? Was there a favorite quote or an inspiring song? What was the deceased like at work? What were some favorite accomplishments?
Passages _____________________2 Pet Place _____________________4 Puzzle Answers ____________________35
Bob enjoyed hunting, target shooting, collecting guns, snowmobiling, and especially spending time with his family and friends. Bob is survived by his wife of 39 years, Mary (Parsons) Watson; his son, Timothy Watson of Dansville; his siblings, Edward (Mary) Watson of Dansville, Michael (Diane) Watson and Kathleen Cranmer all of Conesus; his brother and sisters-in-law, James (Lori) Howden of Wellsville, Paul (Shelly) Howden and Caroline Wendt all of Dansville and Kathryn Gilman of Alabama; his father & mother-in-law, Cleveland and Edna Purvis of Alabama; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and especially close friends, the Buchanan family. There will be no visitation or funeral services per Bob’s request.
Write out the eulogy. Even if you are an experienced speaker, during the emotional time of a rememberance service it is especially easy to wander.

Happy New Year! 5 Pandemic Habits Worth Saving
2020
was an understatedly difficult year, and many of us were not sorry to see it go. The pandemic changed the way we work, the way we spend our leisure time, the way we connect with our loved ones and much more. While the majority will likely be happy to leave those changes behind, there are at least a handful of new habits worth holding on to.
#1: Spending more time with family The pandemic created a new era of “family togetherness” thanks to a variety of social distancing and COVID-19 prevention efforts including schools shutting down and parents working from home. While it is unfortunate that social activities, in school attendance, sporting events and other activities often had to be postponed, one silver lining has been the dramatic uptick in time spent together, spouse to spouse, parent to child. A wealth of fun ideas – including those on our Explore page – ranged from outdoor options to reading list to a variety of games; however, one of the most interesting and modern offers was virtual tours and trips. Anyone with internet access was all it took to enjoy a wide variety of virtual experiences from the comfort of one’s couch, including touring national parks, world famous museums, underwater dives, and much more. As things hopefully begin to return to “normal” this year, consider resisting the temptation to refill your schedule. Instead, continue 2020ís family time trend, and hopefully soon, visit in person some of the places you have explored virtually.
#2: Valuing extended family & friends Without question, one of the hardest parts of the pandemic has been being unable to spend time with all of our loved ones, particularly extended and elderly family members. Before the pandemic, how many of us took for granted that we could visit our loved ones whenever we wished? Suddenly, elderly relatives were quarantining in their homes or in nursing homes, unable to see visitors except across windowpanes. For those who faithfully visit family, this has been a painful adjustment. Sadly, the old adage, You never know what you have until it is gone, has seldom been more deeply felt. Hopefully, this time apart has given many of us a new appreciation for spending time with our extended and elderly family members and will visit them often when it is safe to do so.
#3: More time in the great outdoors As many avenues of recreation closed or became very limited, people found themselves heading outdoors. One of the only places that didn’t close were nature areas. Parks were usually open for hiking, recording a definite increase in visitors. Thankfully, the Genesee River Valley is blessed with several parks, trails, forests, wilderness areas, campgrounds, lakes, rivers, and creeks, making it perfect for outdoor recreation. Aside from the obvious health benefits during a pandemic, spending time outside in nature has a variety of everyday health benefits. Researchers have linked exposure to greenspace with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, preterm birth, stress, and high blood pressure. Additionally, time spent in nature can improve mood; increase one’s ability to focus, even among children diagnosed with ADHD; accelerate recovery from injury or illness; and improve sleep. With such holistic benefits, this is one habit that should definitely continue.

#4: Continued hand washing and sanitizing Incredibly simple, it is surprising how much the pandemic increased awareness and mindfulness regarding these simple habits. While sanitizing is a convenience many of us enjoy, handwashing is the real hero. In fact, the CDC notes that it is one of the best ways people can protect themselves and their families from getting sick. Interestingly, the CDC suggests that it is not particularly important whether the water is hot or cold or whether the soap is antibacterial or not (outside of professional health care settings). What is important is lather. Soap and water worked into a lather trap and remove germs and chemicals. When applied to hands before soap, water helps develop a better lather. A good lather forms pockets known as micelles that trap and remove germs, and scrubbing for at least 20 seconds helps ensure that no germs are left behind. Even as vaccinations fuel hopes of quelling this pandemic, more mindful handwashing habits – the proverbial ounce of prevention – are worth carrying forward.
#5: Positive community connections All across our readership area, many inspiring people reached out and joined together to support their neighbors, local businesses, and communities. Even while social distancing, working from home, and remaining physically apart, communities came together. They created online pages and websites to continue to order from local restaurants. They shared which businesses were open, had curbside pick-up available and more. They purchased gift cards for future use at independent businesses they love just to ensure they remained open. They also looked after each other. They went shopping for elderly neighbors. They reached out with food and free and low-cost meals for those in need, out of work, or faced with fewer hours. They connected on social media networks to encourage one another to be strong, made signs to encourage their communities, raised money for backpack programs, holiday programs, and simply let others know they were available if needed, showing incredible solidarity. This unity, support, and resurgence of respect for teachers, medical workers and other service professionals should by all means continue into the new year and beyond.

IT PAYS TO USE CRATES WHEN TRAINING PUPPIES Many dog owners, particularly those who have never before had a dog, may hesitate to employ crates to train their puppies. That’s understandable, as on the surface it can seem cruel or inhumane to confine a living animal to a cage. However, the AKC notes that dogs are den animals that naturally seek out canine caves for security. That’s true whether dog owners provide crates for their puppies or not. So while humans may see crates as cruel, dogs very likely view their crates as secure places where they can go if they get scared or feel skittish. In fact, according to the AKC, dogs’ perception of crates is one reason why dog owners typically find it relatively easy to get their dogs to adjust to crates and ultimately enjoy them.

MAKE THE YEAR AHEAD CLUTTER-FREE Many people feel the dawn of a new year provides an opportunity to clean the slate and begin anew. That notion can be applied in various ways, including around the house. Cleaning the slate at home may involve reducing clutter around the house. Clutter can gradually overtake a home’s interior, turning a once pristine home into one overwhelmed with nonessential items. As intimidating as clutter can seem, discarding it is easier than it may appear.

In the heat of the New Year’s Eve countdown, fueled by enthusiasm and possibly a few glasses of champagne, resolutions may roll off of the tongue. But come the morning of January 1, such resolutions may not hold the same appeal. Between 40 and 45 percent of the American population will make a New Year’s Resolution, according to polling by researchers at the University of Scranton. Research suggests that only about 8 percent of people stick with those resolutions and achieve their goals. The outlook is similar for Canadians, 31 percent of whom set New Year’s resolutions. Among those that do, three-quarters will break them, according to a poll from Ipsos. A survey of online shoppers who visited the website FreeDeliveryLand.co.uk revealed that the average length of time a person can expect to pursue their New Year’s resolution is around three and a half weeks, or 24 days. Maintaining resolutions can be a resolution in and of itself. Resolutions are made and broken every year. Make this the year you realize your resolution.

Hyper, Yelping Terrier Is Handful During Walks DEAR PAW’S CORNER: A have a wiry little terrier named “Chip” who is well-behaved inside. However, when it’s time for his daily walk, he begins barking nonstop by the door. When I take him outside on the leash, he keeps barking, and pulls hard on the leash. So much so that he almost hurts himself when the collar digs into his neck. Then he’ll yelp, as if I had hurt him. It’s embarrassing to walk with this hyper, yelping little dog. How can I get him to calm down? -- Charity G., Albany, New York DEAR CHARITY: An energetic dog can be frustrating to handle, but don’t lose hope. You can work with Chip to improve his behavior. First, order Chip a properly sized halter online, and use this on walks. A halter will spread out the contact points across the stronger parts of his little body. This will prevent injury when Chip pulls against the leash. Halters also are much more comfortable; the uncomfortable collar may be stressing him out. I’d like you to look up a dog trainer in your area who specializes in small dogs, who can be little tornados on a good day. Many trainers are adapting their lessons to an online format, so you can meet with them at home over a conferencing app like Zoom or Google Meet. While you’re waiting for that first session, start working on reinforcing Chip’s basic behavioral training. Work with him at home on the commands “come,” “sit,” “stay” and “lie down.” During walks, work with him on “heel,” “sit” and “stay.” These training sessions also will help Chip work off some of that energy, and he’ll be thrilled with all the attention he’s getting, too.

TURN YOUR HOME INTO THE ULTIMATE
Staycation Destination While vacations sound like the best chance to unwind, planning a trip out of town -- and getting there – can sometimes be more hassle than it’s worth. Here’s how to turn your home into a staycation “destination” that can be enjoyed any time you feel like it:
Upgrade Bedding: Give your bedroom
a five-star hotel-grade makeover so you can enjoy that quality of rest found only on vacation. Shop for percale linens and high-quality pillows and invest in window treatments that block out sound and light, so you can awaken when you choose to, not when the sun or neighbors intervene.
Create a Spa-Like Bathroom: Find your
bliss by creating a spa-like retreat in your bathroom. Start by clearing unsightly clutter and using coordinating dispensers for bath products. Paint the walls in a hue that promotes relaxation -- think earthy tones, blues and greens, then add plants or fresh flowers for a pop of vibrant color. Dimmer switches, waterproof speakers and a waterfall showerhead with different spray settings are just a few updates offering you flexibility to create different moods, all which can connect to a smart home device that remembers your preferences. For that warm, cozy feeling right out of the bath or shower, add in-floor heating and a towel warming drawer.
Add Backyard Touches: Show your
backyard some love with a little landscaping and a few touches that replicate that vacation feel. An outdoor bar and kitchen can give you a dedicated place to wine and dine without having to constantly go in and out of the house. Install a hammock for long afternoons spent with a book.
Explore Financing Options: When it comes to transforming your home into the ultimate destination, you won’t want to cut corners on what matters most to you, whether that’s opting for the superior flat screen TV or getting just the right coffee table to complete the look of your living room. To that end, check out easy and convenient financing options that offer buying empowerment and flexibility. In some cases, you can take advantage of even longerterm promotional financing offers, ranging from 12 to 60 months. Being able to pay off home purchases with convenient monthly payments can make life easier, helping you manage cash flow and compartmentalize spending on all things home. Make “getting away from it all” as simple as taking a bath or enjoying a blockbuster from the comfort of home. With smart renovation strategies, you can be sure you’re getting exactly what you want and need to truly relax. (StatePoint)

Thank you, kind sir Imagine my surprise! The man that I thought was the store manager or owner went to get me a product I needed that wasn’t on the shelf. When he got back to me with it, I thanked him and went to the store cashier to pay for it. The cashier told me the other man already paid for it. Come to find out, the man wasn’t the store manager or owner. He was another customer! I tried to go thank him, but he was long gone. Not only had he paid for it, but apparently, he went in his own car to another store to buy it! Wow! What great kindness to experience in the holiday season! Thank you, kind sir! I wish you a Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year! - Signed, an Old Woman in Need
Delivery Drivers Move out of the way of faster, vehicles on the roads. You’re causing more harm than good by holding everybody up! Move over or find a different sightseeing route. Thank you, sisters I want to thank my sisters in Christ for the “gifts” from the bottom of my heart. You brought tears to my eyes and emphasized what I’ve known all along. God is good. Thanks again. Peace & Happiness in the New Year to you all. Community Generosity The Gilbert family on North St. in Caledonia would like to give a massive thank you this Holiday Season. There were many factors this year that caused our family to struggle, and although we did the best we could, of course, it was still hard. Our community came together like nothing I have ever seen before in order to ensure we had an amazing Christmas. I would
accommodate a 6-7-foot tree. A tree that size should be no more than $45, especially if you were the one to saw it down. I’m a person that would never get a fake tree. I have always had real trees. So, if you think the Christmas tree, you’re buying is too expensive, don’t be too timid to say something about it. If you don’t, next year the same size tree will cost you more. Learn how to treat others You just have love people who don’t have one ounce of common decency who then boohoo about people not having any respect for anyone. They are rude and obnoxious. The only vocabulary they know only consists of fourletter words, added with gestures that really make them appear to have lost all of their marbles. They lack good manners, refinement, and grace. They are the epitome of uncouth. They then complain

like to thank Focus on the Children: you are such caring and hardworking people that go above and beyond for those in need. To everyone at Cooper Vision that bought gifts for a family (that you did not know) during a struggling world right now: I could never thank you enough. Also, to Joan Marie, the Angry Rooster, and everyone in Caledonia that assisted with the gifting tree: thank you! This is a Christmas we will never forget.
Kudos Livingston County Department of Health Hats off to the Livingston County Department of Health! On December 12th, the Health Department held a ‘drive thru COVID-19 test site,” which my husband and I attended. The system they established was efficient and successful and ran like a ‘well-oiled machine.’ Staff and all who worked the event were professional, pleasant, competent, and caring. Before we arrived back at our home, we received a call to report that our tests were negative! Thank you! -J & B
about how people have no respect for one another. Well, they need to respect others around them. Ever heard “practice what you preach?” They are very bad examples for young ones. They should be ashamed of themselves, but they don’t see that they are really hurting themselves in the long run. Please slow down Thanks go out to the Livingston County Highway Department for resurfacing our county road this summer. They did a great job, but it has now become somewhat of a speedway. It seems like everyone is in quite a hurry, and unfortunately, a few days ago, our beloved family cat was hit and killed near our home.... not saying that speed was a factor but it could have been. Please slow down on our country roads. Merry Christmas to all and hoping that 2021 will be a much better year for all of us.

No fan attendance Fans in the stands again, but there is a catch. Only about 7,000 fans will be allowed to attend the Bills playoff home game in a stadium that can hold about 68,000. This is actually insulting. No fans should attend the games until that stadium is full to capacity.

TIPS TO HELP REALIZE YOUR GOALS THIS YEAR Make note of potential obstacles. Recognizing potential hurdles in advance of their appearance can help you overcome these obstacles and stay the course toward achieving your goals. For example, men and women hoping to lose weight can look ahead to occasions that might compromise their efforts, such as a loved one’s wedding or backyard barbecue. Recognizing these obstacles in advance gives people a chance to develop a plan to overcome them. In the weight loss example, men and women can choose vegetarian options from reception menus or resolve to avoid alcohol, which tends to be high in calories.

NOW HERE’S A TIP DIY Hand Pampering: Mix together 2 tablespoons of olive oil, 1/5 cup milk, 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1/4 cup honey. Soak hands in mixture for 2 minutes, then rinse and dry hands.
WAYS TO SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES Use social media to give your recommendations on small businesses that go above and beyond in quality and service.
NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Purchase New Year’s celebration items that are on sale in January if you have a graduating senior in 2021. You can get all kinds of items for a fraction of the price, and you will be ready with all the 2021 things you need! * Got a neckache? Grab a pair of long socks, fill each with 2 cups of uncooked white rice and a couple of drops of your favorite essential oil. Knot the sock tightly to seal. Microwave for up to 2 minutes, and test temperature before draping it over your shoulders to apply heat to sore muscles. It’s so nice, especially when you’re laying down. * J.P. in New Jersey advises that instead of using candles during a power outage -- it can be dangerous! -- try a batteryoperated lantern instead. You can even use solar garden lights in a vase. You’d be surprised how much they can light a room. * “To trick yourself into saving money, round up purchases when you enter them into your checkbook register.” -- S.W. in Arkansas * “If you’re storing clothes in a storage tote, put a sheet of fabric softener in as well. It can help repel bugs and keep the fabrics smelling fresh.” -- M.W. in Iowa * “Spray nonwashable plush toys with dry shampoo to clean and freshen them. Rub vigorously with a terry cloth to remove any extra residue and fluff up!” -- P.H. in Pennsylvania

Raynaud’s Patient: Can Viagra Help Cold Fingers --DEAR DR. ROACH: I have scleroderma with Raynaud’s phenomenon, and friends and family members have told me that I might get help from Viagra. Frankly, I hadn’t read or heard that from either my rheumatologists or dermatologists. I already tried a short course of nifedipine over a decade ago (it just gave me a headache), so I just stick with mechanical means to keep my hands warm in winter and, maybe surprisingly to some, in summer. Believe me, air-conditioned grocery stores are torture from April to October. -- M.A.P. ANSWER: Raynaud’s phenomenon is an excessive response of the blood vessels in the skin to changes in temperature, and sometimes to emotional stress. While most people will get cold hands and feet when it is cold, a person with Raynaud’s can get a drastic response, even to air conditioning or freezer sections of grocery stores. The skin will turn white and then blue, then quite red on being rewarmed. Not everybody goes through all three colors, however. Raynaud’s can exist by itself, but is often seen in the presence of autoimmune conditions, such as the systemic sclerosis (scleroderma) you have. Treatment for Raynaud’s is generally the same with or without other conditions. Everybody with Raynaud’s should quit smoking and avoid medications that can trigger an attack (over-the-counter cold and flu remedies are the most common). The mainstay of treatment is avoiding the temperature changes wherever possible, but as you point out clearly, it’s almost impossible to do so completely. Putting your hand in a refrigerator or holding a cold drink can trigger an attack. Many people with Raynaud’s learn to keep gloves with them all the time and dress their entire body warmly. An attack can sometimes be aborted by rubbing hands in warm water or getting them into a warm place. When medication treatment is necessary, a calcium channel blocker like nifedipine is often the first choice. Headache and dizziness can limit effectiveness of this treatment. Studies have shown these medications can cut the attacks by about 50%. Sildenafil (Viagra) has been used in people with Raynaud’s, and is about as effective as calcium channel blockers. However, for people with scleroderma, ulcers and Raynaud’s, sildenafil has been shown in small trials to be very effective. ***

Hydrate Inside and Out. Use a humidifier to keep skin hydrated during the dry months and be sure to lather on moisturizer. Natural moisturizers like coconut oil and shea butter can act as protective barriers against harsh elements, sealing in moisture. In addition to hydrating on the outside, it is just as important to stay hydrated on the inside. By drinking water throughout the day, your skin can stay healthy and moisturized. Avoid Toxins, Specifically Allergens and Irritants. Choose moisturizers and skin care products that don’t contain common irritants, and opt for mild cleansers and moisturizers that are specifically labeled for sensitive skin. Castor oil is another moisturizer alternative that is natural and can be used on both the face and body. Layer Up. Lock in moisture and protect your skin from wind, rain and snow by wearing layers whenever you venture outside. The skin on your neck, face and hands is thinner than other areas of the body and therefore more sensitive to the effects of winter weather. Thermals, scarves and gloves can keep you warm and protect your skin from the cold, dry air. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

REPLACE ENERGY-HUNGRY APPLIANCES The United States Department of Energy says the average American family spends about $2,200 each year for energy costs, and large, inefficient appliances no doubt contribute heavily to those expenditures. Appliances that are several years old, including refrigerators, washing machines, dryers, and even ovens, may no longer meet the stringent energy-saving specifications required of new items. That means such appliances are negatively affecting the environment and their owners’ bottom lines. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

EXPLORE WORK WITH CONFIDENCE (NAPSI)—With unemployment at a 50-year low, companies are eager to draw talent from a diverse pool of job seekers, and organizations have recognized the inherent value in a diverse workforce that includes qualified employees with disabilities. Yet, for many who rely on Social Security disability benefits for income and Medicare or Medicaid, work seems like a gamble. What most people don’t know is that there are free services and supports available for those who qualify. Social Security’s Ticket to Work (Ticket) program and other Work Incentives can help take the guesswork out of finding or returning to work. More than 20 Work Incentives are designed to help individuals who receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) due to a disability, transition to the workplace without immediately losing those benefits. Because each person’s circumstances are different, job seekers are encouraged to consult a certified Benefits Counselor, who can help them make informed decisions about employment and benefits. Through the Ticket program, people ages 18 through 64 who receive SSDI or SSI can receive free job-related services and supports. Whether they work with their state’s Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) agency or with authorized service providers called Employment Networks (EN), people can find the resources they need to prepare for, find and maintain employment.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE - COME JOIN OUR FAMILY!
For individuals such as Shirley, this can mean exploring work with confidence. When Shirley was diagnosed with narcolepsy, her doctors advised her stop working. “It was distressing to lose that sense of control over my life,” she recalls. “…[and] stressful making ends meet on an SSDI check.” It took several years to find effective treatment, but Shirley was determined to regain her well-being and that feeling of self-determination she had lost. “Narcolepsy is not something that just goes away,” she says. “But I’ve learned to make adjustments… [and] work around the disability.” Once she felt ready, Shirley attended a job fair where she learned about the Ticket program and connected with an EN. With their help and encouragement, Shirley found work in her State’s General Services Administration, where she helps ensure small businesses are represented on state contracts. “I’m grateful for the help I received through Ticket to Work,” she reflects. “It feels wonderful to have my independence back! I feel like I can rely on myself again.” To learn more, call the Ticket to Work Help Line at 1-866-968-7842 or 1-866-833-2967 (TTY). Or visit www.choosework.ssa.gov. EMPLOYMENT

Health Centers Care for Patients Regardless of Their Ability to Pay
RN Care Manager Clinical Patient Service Advocate Billing Clerk RN • LPN
Are you an energetic Care Manager, RN, and LPN interested in a fast-paced community health center, want to work close to home, and play an important role in our growing health center?
The number of women entering the professional fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is slowly growing around the world, but there is still a sizable gender gap in these professions. According to the College Board, which produces many standardized tests, only 27 percent of all students taking the AP Computer Science exam in the United Science are women. Similarly, just 18 percent of American computerscience degrees are attained by females. However, this is not the case elsewhere in the world. A paper by Gijsbert Stoet and David Geary published in Psychological Science noted that women who live in countries with traditionally higher gender inequality tend to choose STEM professions more readily. Algeria, for example, has one of the highest ratios of women in STEM professions, at 41 percent. Stoet and Geary surmise that women in these countries may be choosing careers with the strongest path to financial independence. According to a U.S. Department of Education report, students studying science or math in college have a higher employment rate and salary than other majors after graduation. STEM majors typically earn an average of $15,500 more annually than nonSTEM majors. Engineering and engineering technology tends to pay the most. Women eager to secure competitive, stable and well-paying jobs should carefully consider the opportunities available to them in STEM fields.

VOCATIONAL SCHOOLING CAN PAVE THE WAY TO HIGH-PAYING JOBS Many students believe that the next natural step after graduating from high school is to go off to college. Secondary education has become such a common transition that many parents begin saving for college tuition as soon as their children are born. Although college can be the next chapter in a student’s education, many teenagers still choose to attend trade school. Television personality Mike Rowe says the country is in the midst of a skilled labor shortage because workers lack the necessary training to fill the hundreds of thousands of available jobs. Lack of information may drive the notion that trade jobs are nothing more than a backup plan if college doesn’t pan out. However, by realizing that trade jobs, along with short-term vocational training, is a smart investment - and eventually a lucrative career choice - attitudes about trade schools and laborintensive jobs may shift. A great number of college graduates enter the workforce with degrees that may not help them land jobs. And these students typically carry thousands of dollars in tuition debt. Many college grads are underemployed and working in jobs that aren’t even in their fields of study. Career and technical schools help students develop specialized skills that make graduates immediately marketable in their chosen fields, and trade salaries can be very competitive.
