NOW HERE’S A TIP How to pack a suitcase: Roll pants and tops, adding to suitcase first, toward the handle side. Then add heavy items (shoes, boots) toward the wheel end. Make sure you choose the right size case for the trip; too much room will cause items to shift around.

BENEFITS OF HIRING PROFESSIONAL CONTRACTORS The DIY movement has inspired many homeowners to tackle home repair and remodeling projects on their own. DIY projects can be rewarding, and many homeowners who have embraced the DIY movement have discovered talents they never before knew they had. But no matter how simple popular home renovation television shows make remodeling projects appear, homeowners should know that such undertakings are far more difficult than they appear on television. Homeowners who overestimate their abilities and the time they have to complete projects can cost themselves substantial amounts of money. In fact, there are a variety of reasons homeowners might want to work with professional contractors when tackling home improvement projects.

A life spent making mistakes is not only more honorable, but more useful than a life spent doing nothing. - George Bernard Shaw
MEMORIAL GIFTS HONOR LOVED ONES he loss of a friend or loved one is seldom easy, particularly if a person had been suffering from an illness. Close friends and family honor the memories of their deceased loved ones in different ways. Charitable giving can be a great way to honor a loved one’s memory while helping others. Survivors often find comfort in the knowledge that they can do good in the name of a loved one. Tributes or memorial gifts can be approached in different ways and serve as an ongoing reminder of a deceased loved one. Create a charitable foundation: Those who have the time and resources can establish their own charitable groups in the decedent’s name. This method of charity requires the most time and effort, but can prove to be quite an impactful memorial. Individuals who would like to go this route can consult with financial and tax professionals about the best way to establish a charitable group.
William J. Renno September 25, 2020 Springwater: William J. Renno, 98 years of age, passed away Friday evening, September 25, 2020 at his home. Bill was born September 9, 1922 in Chili, NY, the son of William A. and Eunice Mae (Coulter) Renno. He grew up in the Greece area and moved to the Springwater/Wayland areas in the late 1970’s and has remained there ever since. Bill was a World War II Veteran serving his country from November 27, 1942 until his honorable discharge January 5, 1946. Bill and Dorothy Eggert were married September 21, 1943 and celebrated over 39 years together prior to her passing away January 13, 1983. Bill and Colleen Corcoran were married February 27, 1984 and celebrated over 36 years together. Bill’s employment career was mostly spent as a route salesman for Wonder Bread. His hobbies were many. Bill enjoyed his “little garden farm;” loved camping in Florida; and especially took pleasure in fixing just about anything and helping others! Bill was predeceased by his parents; his first wife, Dorothy; a daughter, Susan Roach; a son, Rick Renno; and a grandson, Mike Renno. He is survived by his wife, Colleen Renno of Springwater; his children, William “Skip” (Patricia) Renno of Avon, Douglas Renno of Amsterdam and Dennis (Marjorie) Renno of Windsor, CT; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his sister, Mary Ellen Kennett of Deerfield Beach, FL; and a niece. Bill’s funeral service will be at the convenience of his family. A request from Bill’s family in lieu of flowers and contributions: Say “Thank you!” to a veteran for their service to our country. It always brought a smile to his face when this happened to him. Please visit www.stgeorgefuneralhome.com for online condolences.
Community foundation: Families can focus on something their loved one cared deeply about, such as animal rescue, children, the arts, or even particular places in a community - such as a local park. According to CarePages, a company that produces free patient websites and offers community support for those coping with illness, families can choose to have their donations funneled to specific charities or nonprofit groups. Otherwise, funds can be allocated to a third party community fund that will distribute money to various organizations no matter where they are located. Medical tribute: Memorial gifts that assist medical associations or groups working to find cures or offer treatments for diseases are quite popular. If a loved one passed away due to a specific illness, it is common to ask for donations to a specific organization that specializes in information and services pertaining to that illness. Many such groups have a “donate in memory” option on their websites. Oftentimes families are notified regarding who made memorial donations in their loved ones’ names, but the amount of the donation need not be revealed. Personal intentions: Those who would like to make a donation but cannot think of a charity to associate with their deceased loved one have a host of options at their disposal. Consider donating to a school or library, requesting materials be purchased in the decedent’s name. Otherwise, donate to a general scholarship fund, possibly at the decedent’s alma mater. Finish their work: If the decedent was engaged in a charitable project prior to their death, volunteer to help complete that project. Giving back after the death of a loved one is a great way to keep the memory of that person alive. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

THE BENEFITS OF PREPLANNING YOUR FUNERAL Preplanning provides time to make the best decisions. Men and women who preplan their funerals have ample time to decide just what they want their memorial services to be like and how they want to fund those services. Men and women trusted to make those decisions upon the death of a loved one will need to make those decisions more quickly and likely won’t be in the correct frame of mind to make decisions that will honor their loved one’s legacy.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT FALL Squirrels have a (sophisticated) plan out there. Squirrels hiding food in autumn for the upcoming winter is a familiar sight. And squirrels are more organized than many people may know. Groundbreaking research released in 1991 found that, even when squirrels bury that stash of nuts closely to one another, they will each return to the precise location of their personal cache. Recent research also has shown that squirrels bury their stash based on certain traits, such as the type of nut being buried.

Refresh Your Home for Spring Eliminate the extras While you’re freshening up the house, it’s the perfect time to purge unwanted and unused items, but remember that items in good condition can actually do good for those in need. By donating clothing, electronics, furniture, household goods and vehicles to be sold in The Salvation Army Family and Thrift Stores, you can help transform lives in your local community. A good rule of thumb: if you haven’t used it in the last year and it doesn’t have special sentimental value, it’s probably time to let it go.

These plants are not that varieties and benefits from mulching common, but might be found at local to get it through the winter in our area.
A layer of mulch 2 to 3 inches thick should do the trick. It is best to let it die back on its own in the fall, then cut down in the early spring. It will tolerate almost any soil, but does require good drainage. It is quite drought tolerant, once established. Coreopsis in general are tough, easy-to-grow, sun loving perennials. Coreopsis, like other profuse flowering perennials, tends to decline after a few years, so if your coreopsis is several years old, this could be the problem. Foliage may become sparse and flowers fewer in number. You could try to rejuvenate it by cutting the entire plant off near ground level before bloom season in the spring, then fertilize and water well to encourage new growth. Shearing your Moonbeam
after its first flowering will encourage a new round of flowers. To keep plants vigorous, divide every 2-3 years. This can be done in the fall or the spring. Six hours of sun should be sufficient; however, you could try planting some of the divided pieces in different sunny locations. Gardening is often a matter of trial and error. Even the most experienced gardeners sometimes try more than one location to find where a plant is happiest. First follow what the experts advise about plant care, but if your plants arenít living up to expectations, experiment with location, more or less watering, various fertilizers and compost types, and different timing or approaches to pruning and dividing.
The Master Gardener Program is a national program of trained volunteers who work in partnership with their county CCE office to extend information throughout their communities.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
By Sam Mazzotta
Halloween Candy Is No Treat for Pets DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Last year, my kids dumped out their trick-ortreat candy on the kitchen table to sort through. Halfway through it, they got distracted and left. I wasn’t paying attention either, but our two Golden retrievers, “Nala” and “Jetty,” certainly were. They both got onto the table and ate much of the candy -- of which most contained chocolate. For pet owners who don’t know, chocolate can be deadly to dogs. Never mind the candy wrappers that they had ingested! That led to a panicked rush to the emergency vet and an overnight stay for both our dogs. Fortunately, their size and overall good health helped keep them from suffering any serious complications. However, I still shudder when I think about might have happened. What if we lived in an area where a 24-hour emergency vet wasn’t available? What if we hadn’t noticed the wrappers and smeared chocolate on the floor under the table until the next morning? Please warn your readers to be vigilant about how they store their Halloween candy -- both what they give out and what their children bring home. -- Farah A., Lansing, Michigan DEAR FARAH: You warned them, and I thank you. Halloween marks the beginning of an extended holiday season where rich food, chocolate, alcohol and other party foods are in abundance. And dogs love to be in on the feast. Pet owners need to be especially watchful to keep their pets from ingesting chocolates, candies and other foods that can harm them (like onions and avocados, among other things). Avoid leaving food out on the counter or table, and place pets in their own room to chill out during parties to protect their health and your peace of mind.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles A Comfy Nest for Winter Since it looks like this horrible coronavirus isn't going away soon, we might as well take a few steps to make our lives more comfortable over the winter. Here are some ideas: • Investigate a new wireless router to speed up your Wi-Fi connection, especially if you have multiple devices that put a drag on your connection • Buy a warm fleece blanket, one-person size, for watching TV at night. These 50x70 throws are just the right length. • Consider getting a Kindle, with a free three-month subscription to Kindle Unlimited. You can grab up to 10 free books or magazines at a time. Once you've read one, delete it and get another one. After three months you can decide if you want to spend $9.99/month to keep the subscription going. • If you have someone who can deliver and assemble it, an outdoor propane grill can be a bit of summer fun in the middle of a cold winter. • Keep an eye on sales if you need an additional pot for the extra cooking you're doing. Some stores have curbside delivery, so if you pay online you don't have to go in the store. Get freezer bags to store individual portions you can pull out and heat up without cooking every day. • Splurge on one good, thick sweater or zip sweatshirt to wear in the house. • Reorganize your kitchen cabinets, pantry or linen closet shelves. • And don't forget to stock up on batteries!
This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

Refresh Your Home for Spring Get rid of grime A whole season’s worth of dirt and dust accumulates during the cold winter months. A deep clean inside and out can restore your home to its former glory. Inside, take time to launder all of your linens, including curtains, rugs and bedding. Move furniture to vacuum behind and below, and don’t overlook dust and dirt magnets like mirrors, light fixtures and the insides of cabinets, especially higher shelves that see infrequent use. Outdoors, hose off or power-wash surfaces like windows, siding, decks and concrete to restore a crisp, clean appearance.
NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * “Use a permanent marker to put your initials on your charging cord. They all look the same, especially if they are white. This way you will know if someone -- say, your sister -- takes your cord!” -- V.V. in Georgia * “I use Milk of Magnesia on a cotton ball applied to my toes to ward off itchy feet from athlete’s foot or whatever causes itching. I just apply it when I get out of the shower, and it dries before I put socks on. It really works!” -- E.L. in Kentucky * “An online grocery order mistake landed me with way too many bananas. In addition to banana muffins and breads, I sliced and froze a few bananas to use in smoothies, and mixed mashed bananas together with some other fruit pieces to make a sorbet of sorts.” -- Y.D. in Arizona * When painting, most people know to place a roller in a plastic bag to keep it moist between paint sessions. An added layer of protection is to then stick the roller (in the bag) inside a Pringles chip can. It’s the right size, and it can keep it safe until the next day. * “When my curly curly hair gets the frizz, I use a sheet of fabric softener to take the static electricity out of it. This works so well that in the winter, I keep several in my purse.” -- P.M. in Michigan * Childproofing in a pinch: Slip a thick sock over a doorknob, and secure with a rubber band. Little kids will have to work much harder to grip and turn the doorknob, and it can help keep kids from opening doors.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.
Bids will be publicly opened at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 30, 2020 at the High School Office, 136 North Main Street, Naples, N.Y. 14512. The Board of Education reserves the right to reject any and all bids. The only acceptable payment will be cash, certified check or money order. The vehicle must be picked up within two weeks of notification of the winning bidder. Jeffrey Black, School Business Administrator

RISK FACTORS FOR BREAST CANCER Having breast tissue that is dense on a mammogram is a factor in breast cancer risk. The level of risk depends on how dense the breast tissue is. Women with very dense breasts have a higher risk of breast cancer than women with low breast density. Increased breast density is often an inherited trait, but it may also occur in women who have not had children, have a first pregnancy late in life, take postmenopausal hormones, or drink alcohol. RECIPES FOR FUN: If you’re preparing a meal, it could be a good time to teach children of reading age how to review a recipe. Evaluating ingredients to learn how food transforms from raw to cooked or how a dish is created can help kids learn kitchen skills. FOOD GROUPS FOCUS: Get kids involved in making dinner by setting a rule that each food group must be represented. Give them a warmup activity by asking which food groups are found in family favorites like chicken soup, lasagna or meatloaf. Asking kids to guess which ingredients are used in these dishes and identifying which food group each ingredient belongs to can help them understand dietary balance.
INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT FALL The colors of fall foliage are actually present year-round. Fall is known for its colorful foliage. But the pigments responsible for those colors are actually present year-round. According to the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, green, yellow and orange pigments are present year-round. However, during spring and summer, the leaves serve as factories where many foods necessary to help the tree grow are manufactured. That process takes place in the leaf in cells containing chlorophyll, which gives the leaves their green color. This process ceases as hours of daylight decrease and temperatures drop. As a result, chlorophyll breaks down, the green color disappears and the vivid colors of fall foliage begin to appear.

MEDICAL BED BLESSING I love my neighbors near and far! I placed a “need medical bed” in the “Give & Take,” and my phone rang off the hook (as we use to say). So many people opened their hearts to offer a bed for a needy person. When they heard that Mary Ellen had donated her bed, everyone said “Praise God for his Blessings on one in need”. Things may be tough right now but, in my experience, love and support never go away. May God Bless you all! PAYING IT FORWARD! A gentleman, on Sunday, October 4th, on East Henrietta Road; bought a lunch for my friend and me. I had held a door for a stranger to enter, and we parted
as friends. Thank you, “Sir”, for your kindness, and we will pay-itforward! THANKS TO TOPS! Once again, Tops at Hamlin comes through for its customers. A shout out to ERICH who was kind enough to take an apple pie back to the bakery for me, after I decided to buy a frozen apple pie. He was polite and did so without any ah’s or a “Well, I’m busy at the moment” sort of attitude. He was at the other end of the store when I asked him if he could do me that favor. His kindness was greatly appreciated. It may seem like something small and insignificant, but it is really nice when someone extends themselves on behalf of another human being. Thanks!
MOLLY & I THANK YOU! Rarely in one’s lifetime does an individual encounter kindness of the magnitude I experienced when my precious 11-year-old lab suddenly became acutely ill. Bob and Debby Berry carried Molly out to my car and accompanied me to the emergency vet, remaining with us the entire time. Fortunately, Molly’s prognosis is good, and she has made a full recovery. We need more selfless heroes like Bob and Debbie. WALGREEN’S ROCKS! I went to Walgreen’s in Brockport and had a problem at check out. I went over the amount allowed on my insurance card. Jamie was so kind to offer to check the price of the vitamin C’s I had wanted to buy.
She thought they were on sale. When she came back, she had her arms full of various different brand C’s and tried to assist me to see which ones I could purchase without going over the amount available on my insurance card. How thoughtful! She went above and beyond what many others would do. Jamie really impressed us! Because of her diligence, I was able to obtain a different brand of vitamin C’s! Thank you for going the extra mile. As a customer, we really value your caring attitude that you displayed towards us. I left your store a satisfied and happy customer! KIDZ KORNER Thank you for the Kidz Korner page on Respect! Kids still need this today.
INCONSIDERATE SHOPPING BEHAVIOR If you’re one of the vest-wearing, jack-booted tribe of women currently wandering the aisles of grocery stores, texting and yakking on your cell phones, blocking aisles, oblivious to all the other people attempting to shop around you, you can expect people to call you out on your entitled, self-centered behavior. Just do us all a favor and shop online. No one wants to hear about your brow sculpting appointment. PLEASE PROOFREAD I was reading a local newspaper (not the GVPS), and the article on the first page was riddled with grammatical errors. Does anyone proofread what is being
published, or is it just a free for all? This certainly takes the professionalism out of journalism and “quite frankly” diminishes the entire purpose of the article. NO DAYCAMPING I have lived here for 20 years, and every year, I pull out my camper, to read, watch movies, etc. in my yard. I cannot go anywhere else due to my work schedule. The neighborhood is more like town than country now: lots of lawn mowers going this year, loud cars, power tools, etc. This is the first year this has happened. I will most likely sell camper next year. I realize noise can be made, but we cannot enjoy peaceful use of our yard. We can even hear noise inside of our house.
REPRESENTATIVES! re Where is our foreclosure relief? SHAME ON YOU! This is for the person or personss n who took our ‘Back the Blue’ sign nt supporting Law Enforcement n from our front yard. Shame on you! Our daughter is a memberr of law enforcement. We are very proud of her and have the right to support and display whatever we wish on our own property. You were trespassing, and we hope you never need to call the police for assistance since you apparently have no respect for them or the rights of others. SHAME ON HER! Good Riddance to the thrift store/consignment shop at
the bottom of the hill. Some of the employees stole the merchandise on consignment. I was never reimbursed for those items! When the owner decided to close the shop, I was never notified. I assume she stole/ sold my items. To date the owner has not returned any of my messages. Shame on her! Good Riddance!

y e n o h Sweet on Local BY AMANDA DUDEK
Honey is tasty, healthy, and best yet, all natural! Fresh honey flavors change with the environment since honeybees typically travel no further than 3 miles from their hive. Rochester’s Pat Bono, manager of Rochester Beekeepers and owner and sole beekeeper of award-winning Seaway Trail Honey, keeps her bees along the shores of Lake Ontario, harvesting honey from them each week. She shares her insights on our region’s honey flavors. “This has been a phenomenal honey year,” says Pat. “We are in a very good part of the state for honey production thanks to a limestone belt that runs across the state. This creates sweet soil here, which is not found in the Southern Tier and Adirondack Regions.”
PAT B O N O Manager of Rochester Beekeepers
To determine which types of flower nectars contributed to her honey, Pat sends it out for pollen analysis. “We are very fortunate to have a patchwork of land, woods, wetlands, open fields and meadows rather than huge areas of monoculture crops,” she says. “There are always wild areas, which is good because bees prefer wildflowers.”
Looking for an alternative to maple syrup? Try local honey on your pancakes! Top with butter, fruit or nuts and enjoy!
Honey is a product of both time and place. As different types of plants bloom throughout the year, honey flavors change. Pat’s observations may help you choose your next jar! SPRING: Most nectar tends to come from tree blossoms. Flavors: Sweet and mild with floral notes
SUMMER: Native clovers all over are a great nectar source. Flavors: One of the “tea honeys,” sweet and mild with floral notes
E A R LY S U M M E R : Much nectar comes from Linden and wild basswood blossoms. Flavors: Very sweet honey, mild
L AT E S U M M E R / FA L L : Native goldenrod blooms in abundance, offering much nectar to pollinators. Flavors: A much darker, robust, almost caramel taste
FOOD & DRINK H O N E Y PA I R I N G S : • Drizzle honey on roasted almonds or walnuts and bake in the oven. • A dollop of honey in a bowl of greek yogurt also is a tasty treat.

• Swirl sweet honey in your morning cup of coffee instead of sugar to sweeten it up. • Drizzle a little honey on an aged cheese such as sharp or blue. The sweet honey will mellow out the strong flavor.

Lab Finds Tiny Amount of Blood in Her Urine --DEAR DR. ROACH: My question is about microscopic hematuria. I see a rheumatologist for sarcoidosis. Last year I had various lab tests, including a urinalysis. That test and several since then have shown microscopic hematuria. The rheumatologist sent me to a urologist, who did scans and a scope of the bladder up through the right kidney. There’s a slight stricture of the right ureter. My biopsies were negative. Tests and scans continue to be OK except for the microscopic hematuria. I am a 60-year-old woman. Is the hematuria a cause for concern? -- K.E. ANSWER: “Hematuria” means “blood in the urine.” “Gross” hematuria means there is so much blood that it changes the urine color, while “microscopic” hematuria is recognizable only in the laboratory. Blood in the urine can come from anywhere in the urinary system, and there is a long list of possibilities. Although the cause is sometimes never found, your physician should consider urinary tract infection, kidney or bladder stones, and, in the right age group, cancer of the kidney and bladder. CT scans and cystoscopy are commonly performed tests, and the negative result in your case is reassuring. You have one more reason to have hematuria than others, and that is the sarcoidosis. Sarcoidosis is a condition that can affect any tissue in the body with abnormal clumps of cells called granulomata. (Just one is called a granuloma.) While the lungs are the most common site for sarcoidosis, it can affect the kidney, causing hematuria. Sarcoidosis also can cause kidney damage, resulting in a high creatinine, so that should be tested. Severe kidney disease from sarcoidosis may be treated with prednisone, but you should see an expert (nephrologist) to consider this diagnosis. The majority of people with small amounts of blood in the urine with no documented reason for it, including the cystoscopy and scans you had, will not have serious disease. However, it is probably still prudent to keep an eye on the kidneys and bladder periodically. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I was just told that I have brittle veins. I have exhausted every place I can think of to find out more about this condition. What is it? What causes it? What should I do? -- T.M.G. ANSWER: There isn’t a condition called “brittle veins”: Whoever told you that was trying to explain a symptom you have. They may have meant that your capillaries (the smallest type of blood vessel) break easily. That’s a cause of easy bruising. They may have meant that you have stiff blood vessels, from calcium or cholesterol. That’s a cause of high blood pressure. They may have been trying to draw blood or put in an IV and found that your vein “blew,” meaning the needle went through the vein entirely and you had bleeding under the skin. There are also some rare blood disorders causing blood vessels to become fragile, and sometimes inflamed. These can be quite serious, but I doubt you have one of these. You would have been referred to a specialist. While I understand why medical professionals will use nonspecific terms like these, they can lead to confusion. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. PROTECTIVE FACTORS FOR BREAST CANCER Decreasing the length of time a woman’s breast tissue is exposed to estrogen may help prevent breast cancer. Exposure to estrogen is reduced in the following ways: • Early pregnancy: Estrogen levels are lower during pregnancy. Women who have a full-term pregnancy before age 20 have a lower risk of breast cancer than women who have not had children or who give birth to their first child after age 35. • Breast-feeding: Estrogen levels may remain lower while a woman is breast-feeding. GROWTH OF THE SOLAR EMPLOYMENT SECTOR ANTICIPATED OPENING
According to the Solar Foundation’s National Solar Jobs Census 2016, there were 260,077 solar workers working at 8,601 solar companies in the United States in 2016. The census also found that the five states with the most solar jobs in 2016 were California, Massachusetts, Texas, Nevada, and Florida. Twenty-eight percent of state solar workers in 2016 were females, making women the largest demographic in the solar industry. Latinos and Hispanics (17.2 percent), Asians or Pacific Islanders (9.1 percent), and veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces (9 percent) rounded out the top four demographics employed by the solar industry. Of the 260,077 solar industry jobs in 2016, more than 137,000 were classified as installation jobs that paid a median wage of $26 per hour. With roughly 38,000 jobs in 2016, solar manufacturing was the next biggest employer of workers in the solar industry.

DID YOU KNOW? How households earn their income has changed dramatically over the last several decades. According to a Pew Research Centeral analysis of the Decennial Census and American Community Surveys integrated Public Use Microdata Sample files, in 1960 only fathers worked in 70 percent of American households. That figure has dropped in each ensuing decade and by 2012 fathers were the sole earners in just 31 percent of American households. While one in four households in American were dual income households in 1960, by 2012 that figure had risen to 60 percent. While those figures represent dramatic changes, the number of households in which mothers are the sole earners has not changed all that much since 1960. In 1960, mothers were the sole earners in just 2 percent of American households. Fifty-two years later 6 percent of American households featured mothers as the sole earners.

STUDY WHAT YOU LOVE—ENTREPRENEURSHIP AS THE PATH TO SUCCESS AND FULFILLMENT (NAPSI)—The United States has long been considered a leader in entrepreneurial pursuits, with everyone from ambitious self-starters to certified moguls making their way here from around the globe to transform dreams into realities. According to the Global Entrepreneurship Development Institute, the United States provides the best environment for cultivating entrepreneurship, ranking first out of 138 countries. On the flip side, however, first-time business owners have only an 18 percent chance of succeeding. So how to bridge the gap between the dreamers and the triumphant? If you’re a student looking for a way to make your passion into your career, you may be glad to learn there’s a college program that can put you on the right path, while also providing you with a classic liberal arts education. The new Entrepreneurship minor course of study at Pennsylvania’s Lycoming College provides a modern approach to a liberal arts education, while preparing students to start a company of their own, to work for another entrepreneurial company or to be more entrepreneurial within a larger company. The program is headed by Marshall D. Welch III, the Sloter Endowed Chair in Entrepreneurship at Lycoming College, who is an accomplished entrepreneur with extensive experience advising and managing organizations, merger integration and emerging growth companies. He also approaches entrepreneurship differently from others. Welch believes that entrepreneurship, at its core, is finding and creating value, and that studying entrepreneurship as an academic discipline helps students learn to be innovative in whatever field they ultimately pursue. In less than one year, Lycoming College’s entrepreneurship classes have become a sought-after, valued addition to many students’ class schedules. The program is built on the notion that any student’s core education, regardless of academic major, can be augmented with the practical knowledge and skills necessary to take a business idea to fruition, such as innovation, digital marketing, intellectual property and financial skills. “My No. 1 objective is to create a world-class experience for students by joining the liberal arts with entrepreneurship,” said Welch. “I believe that the core knowledge of any entrepreneur is first his or her primary field of study, whether that is biology, archaeology, music or any of the other majors at Lycoming. Then add the practical knowledge and skills necessary to help our students become successful entrepreneurs or even work for entrepreneurial companies.” Firmly grounded in the liberal arts, the College has modernized its approach to higher education by offering courses that better prepare students for the 21st century. Still in its infancy, the program is already attracting well-known speakers to campus. Jay Ducote, celebrity chef and restaurateur, who has appeared on Food Network and Travel Channel, recently lectured to the College community on how he followed his passion and took risks on his road to success. “Lycoming is resolute in its mission to offer students a 21st-century education, and I believe our entrepreneurship offerings are an important part of that charge. Thinking deeply and making bold decisions to do something the world has never seen, while also staying true to your passions, accurately describes the students at this institution—a truth that also closely aligns with the principles of entrepreneurship,” said Welch.
