Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

FOOD ALLERGY FAST FACTS Food allergies can develop from birth, and some last a lifetime. Others are developed at different ages and may be outgrown. No matter when allergies stop or start, they can be a life-threatening problem for children. Although food allergies may be managed more easily at home, they present different challenges for school-aged children. School nurses and administrative officials should be informed about food allergies, especially if they are severe enough to warrant medical intervention, such as medication. Food allergies are quite common. Consider these allergy facts that can help parents better understand any issues their children might face. • The Food Allergy Research and Education network says nearly 15 million people in the United States, many of whom are children, are affected by food allergies. • One in 13 Canadians, or roughly 2.5 million people, are affected by a food allergy, according to estimates from the Allergy, Genes and Environmental Network. • Around 7 percent of Canadian children under the age of 18 report having at least one food allergy. • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says children with food allergies are two to four times more likely to have other related conditions, such as asthma and other allergies. • Food allergies are an immune system response to the food, not a case of digestive intolerance. • Among food allergic children, peanuts are the most prevalent allergen, followed by milk and shellfish, says the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. • Food allergies can cause everything from mild reactions, such as itchiness or hives, to anaphylaxis, a severe and potentially deadly reaction. • Risk of food allergies increases when there is a parent who suffers from any type of allergic disease - even those beyond food allergies. • A recent study conducted by researchers at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine found that children are taking longer to outgrow milk and egg allergies. • Food avoidance remains the best way to prevent symptoms of food allergies. It’s Best to Taper Off Heartburn Meds ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 61-year-old woman in fairly good health, except that I have been taking prescription omeprazole once a day for heartburn for at least 10 years, if not more. I’ve read articles that say this isn’t good to take long term like I’ve been doing. When I’ve tried to stop by using famotidine instead, I still suffer from heartburn throughout the day. I’ve raised my bed and tried sleeping in an upright position. Your thoughts, please. -- O.D.S. ANSWER: It certainly is a good idea to periodically review with your doctor all the medications you take to decide whether they are still necessary. It is very often the case that people are taking medications for unclear reasons, and the person who is prescribing it has been doing so without really thinking about whether the benefits still outweigh the risks, especially as people get older and may have acquired new conditions or had medication changes. Proton pump inhibitors like omeprazole frequently are prescribed for short-term use but end up being continued for years. Except in people who absolutely need it (such as people with Barrett’s esophagus), I agree with a trial of stopping and using H2 blockers like famotidine on an as-needed basis. I recommend a taper, not a sudden stop. Proton pump inhibitors are likely to increase the risk of infection, such as pneumonia (without acid in the stomach, bacteria are not killed as efficiently) and intestinal infections; may possibly increase the risk of osteoporosis; and probably reduce vitamin B-12 and iron absorption. Although there have been reports of increased risk of kidney disease and dementia, I doubt the actual clinical risk is significant. Still, there are enough possible adverse effects that it is worth balancing the risks against the benefits of reducing symptoms. Some people benefit from eliminating certain foods, especially caffeine, chocolate and fatty or spicy foods.

Saw palmetto is well-known, but most recently was found to be no better than placebo. Beta-sitosterol, cernilton and Pygeum africanum are all plant extracts with some evidence of benefit, at least when it comes to symptoms. You are quite correct that without independent laboratory verification, there is no way to be sure of the quality and purity of dietary supplements. In addition, hobbies can be a great way to meet new people, an important benefit for working parents who may otherwise find it difficult to meet new people. Finding a hobby may take some trial and error, as adults may find activities that once appealed to them no longer do, while other pursuits may require more time than men and women can reasonably devote. Adults looking for a hobby can consider the following strategies as they begin their pursuits. Think back to childhood. A childhood passion may provide the perfect starting point as adults look for hobbies. For example, adults who enjoyed painting as children may find they still know their way around a canvas and palette. Ask around. Adults who want to find a hobby to foster social connections can ask friends, family, neighbors, or coworkers to recommend activities. This can help men and women make connections in their communities and/or reconnect with friends or family members with whom they have fallen out of touch. Think small. Because there is often some trial and error in finding a rewarding hobby, it makes sense to avoid making too big a commitment right off the bat. Before buying lots of expensive equipment or materials or making a large time commitment, give yourself some time to try a hobby on for size. The first activity you try might not necessarily take, and walking away won’t sting as much if you had not committed much time or money. Consider coaching or mentoring. Athletes who still have a passion for their favorite sports but can no longer meet the physical demands such sports require can stay involved by coaching youth sports. The same can be said for professionals passionate about their work who choose to mentor. These activities might not be traditional hobbies, but they offer a great way for adults to pursue their passions on their own time. Steuben County District #4 Wayland & Cohocton
Legislature Report Can you believe it - as of 12/31/19 my four year term as your County Legislator is coming to an end. My how time flies! 2019 was a very busy year with trying to build into the budget all the new State mandates. These mandates include the major changes in the Criminal Justice System that requires additional staff for the District Attorney and Public Defender’s office, as well as the Sheriff ’s road patrol. The Central Arraignment Court, located in Bath, also referred to as CAP Court, where all arraignments are handled for the entire County, seems to be working well with just a few hiccups. With the Raise the Age Law still being phased in, the total cost has not been determined, but I am sure more County dollars will come into play. Cash bail has been eliminated which will reduce the numbers in your County Jail and should save some costs, but the total savings has not yet been determined so we can only hope for the best. The down side for the law is we are releasing individuals back into the community that, by far, are not in the best interest for those living in the State and County.
The County budget for 2020 will go up by about 2 & 1/2 million dollars due to State mandates, but as sales tax revenue has gone up, we will be left with a 1.06% increase. Even with this increase the tax rate per thousand will go down .19 cents per thousand. The reduction in tax rate is accomplished as the total assessment value in the County has increased. As I have no opposition in this year’s election, it will be my honor to represent District #4 for another four years. In District #4, County Road 36 in Cohocton and County Road 91 in Wayland were both recycled and blacktopped. The County Public Works crew did a great job on both, and have received many compliments on the completed projects. In the Village of Wayland the old Mayflower Restaurant on the corner of Naples St. and Main was taken down. County trucks carried the debris to the County Landfill and the tipping fees were abated, which saved the Village thousands of dollars.

Saturday, November 9, 2019, we laid our Mom, Georgeia Defoe, to rest. My two wonderful nieces, Bobbie Jo and niece-in-law, Lindsay Passamonte put together all by themselves a wonderful luncheon for after the service. These two girls did everything: Beef on Wick, mac salad, toss salad and fixin’s, cookie trays, On several different occasions, someone has ranted on how their neighbor cuts/mows his or her lawn late, disturbing the peace of others. All I can say or add is that perhaps you should just be happy that they keep their lawn up and keep the grass cut. Imagine having a neighbor who lives in a nice neighborhood or tract, and who doesn’t seem to think that his lawn needs to be mowed? It’s not only unsightly, but it speaks volumes as to what type of people live there, also. So, look on the bright side of things and be happy that they keep their lawn up!
Why do people feel the need to mow early morning? Can town
coffee, water and soda, the linens on tables, plates, silverware, salt, pepper and serving spoons. Now mind you, each have little boys, which kiddos were with their fathers as they cared for them. Plus, Bobbie Jo gave the four of us children a beautiful key chain with an angel wing on it, and in the middle was the word, “MOM,” and a saying: “I have a guardian Angel in Heaven. I call her Mom.” These two ladies need to know how much this has meant to me, my brother and two sisters. Thank you! It could have been a school bus or another poor unsuspecting driver, but it was me, a mom of two! You showed lack of common sense, blatant disregard for rules, carelessness!

Let’s all remember that the holidays don’t go from Halloween to Christmas. Thanksgiving Day is so important as most of us have much to be thankful for. A day for sharing a meal with loved ones, no stress over shopping for “the right gift”. The only stress, trying to save room for pie! Yes, there are a lot of things wrong with our country, but there is a lot more that’s right. Sure, we can all find something to be thankful for on Thanksgiving Day and every day. I would like to thank HFL Cougars for a great season. You guys showed lot of heart especially being a man down. Thank you, Bobby Richardson alma mater 1973!

Yes, I will wait for email next time instead of being treated like this. I only did this this time because I wasn’t sure if I would be able to pick up during the rest of week. I will still shop there, but I hope there won’t be a repeat of this.

It’s Medicare Enrollment Time Again.
Home For The Holidays
(NAPS)—With today’s technology, staying in touch with loved ones around the country—and the world—is easier than it’s ever been. We are connected to each other virtually day and night—from cell phones and video calls to social media, texting and e-mail. While we may rely on this technological closeness throughout the year, the holidays offer a unique opportunity to sit and spend time with family members, particularly older family members, whom we don’t see on a regular basis. This face-to-face time provides a chance to connect, catch up, and observe behaviors that may go undetected over the phone or through e-mail. Certain changes in these behaviors from year-to-year may indicate a need for long-term care. While each passing year will show some changes in an older family member’s capabilities and function, the list below provides common changes in behavior to watch for to get a better idea of where your loved ones stand functionally. It’s important not to focus on the behavior itself, but rather the change in that behavior compared to what is considered normal for that person. For example, someone who has always been quiet and somewhat introverted would be held to a different standard than someone who is usually very outgoing and conversational, but now seems withdrawn and isolated. Based on the information you gather, it may be time to start thinking about your family’s plan for long-term care. The time to plan is now Millions of Americans require long-term care at some point during their lifetime. This type of care includes assistance with everyday activities, like bathing, dressing and eating, or supervision due to a severe cognitive impairment, like Alzheimer’s disease. Surprisingly, the type of care needed to provide assistance with these activities can be expensive and is generally not covered by traditional health plans or Medicare. In many cases, taking care of an older relative often falls on family members or friends. However, depending on the location of family members and friends, this support is often not available or may be a bigger challenge than many expect or are willing to take on. Take a closer look By paying attention to some common behaviors, you can begin to determine whether a loved one is having difficulty performing everyday activities. Noticing changes in behavior that may be due to an emerging physical or cognitive impairment is an important first step. Based on what you observe, the Federal Long Term Care Insurance Program (FLTCIP) may be worth considering when developing your family’s plan for long-term care. Cleanliness of the home: Is there clutter in the hallways, stacked mail, uncleaned dishes, etc.? Social interaction: Are they engaged with friends and family, getting out and about, and continuing social interaction at their normal level? Personal hygiene and care: Are activities like regular bathing, laundry, grooming, etc., taking place? Level of independence: Has the level of reliance on a spouse or guest for various things increased (e.g., getting a glass of water, answering the phone or doorbell, etc.)? Financial health: Are bills piling up, being paid on time, etc.? Mental sharpness: Is your loved one participating in conversations, staying up-to-date with the news or favorite sports team, etc.? Nutritional balance: Maintaining normal eating habits, food within “best by” ranges, cupboards stocked, etc.? How did you answer? Mostly unchanged The best time for you and your family members to consider long-term care insurance is long before it’s needed. Because the FLTCIP is medically underwritten, it’s important to apply while you’re still in good health to avoid the risk that a future illness or medical condition may prevent you from obtaining coverage later. Also, premiums are directly related to age. This means that premiums tend to be lower for younger applicants.

HOME FIRE RISKS INCREASE AS WEATHER COOLS (NAPSI)—The fall and winter seasons bring cooler temperatures, holidays, and images of cozy nights by the fireplace. Yet the change in seasons also comes with the chance of severe weather and an increase in fire risks. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, more home fires occur in winter than in any other season. “Holiday decorations, space heaters, generators, and fireplaces all present fire hazards if not properly used and maintained,” said Steve Hirsch, chair of the National Volunteer Fire Council. “Residents should be aware of the dangers and take the steps to make sure their families and homes are protected.” Follow these tips to minimize home fire and safety risks: • Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of the home. Test monthly to ensure they work. • Install carbon monoxide alarms and test them at least once a month. • Know where the gas, electric, and water main shut-off controls are and how to use them.

Oxygen is essential for the roots of grass to breathe and grow strong enough to support healthy lawns. But according to the Center for Agriculture, Food and the Environment at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, compacted soil can produce a decrease in oxygen content that can make it hard for roots to thrive. Soil compaction can result from a number of activities, including walking on grass or driving or parking vehicles on grass. When soil is compacted, it breaks into small particles that reduce the amount of pore space in the soil. That makes it hard for water, oxygen and nutrients to get through, threatening the strength of the roots and putting the grass in jeopardy. Aerating a lawn can help homeowners foster strong root growth and healthy grass. When to aerate may be contingent upon local climate, so homeowners who suspect the soil in their yards is compact should consult with a local landscaping professional to determine the best time to aerate their lawns.

Wayland & Springwater American Legions Surf and Turf a Lip-Smacking Success! By Amanda Dudek
T
he Wayland American Legion has a vision to make a piece of property of which it has been given stewardship in Wayland into a memorial park. In order to successfully launch fundraising efforts to develop the park, the Wayland and Springwater American Legions worked in collaboration with the Wayland Rotary assisted by the Wayland Auxiliary to throw a Surf and Turf fundraiser dinner on Saturday, November 2nd. “We are starting our fundraising project,” said Kevin Mark, Post Commander of American Legion Theodore R. Van Tassel Post 402 in Wayland. “B & E Depot did a fundraiser a few weeks before the dinner and sent us a check, but this will be our first big event.” The Legion hopes to break ground next spring. What would turn out to be a very successful evening, sponsored by local business Valley Fuel, opened with cocktails at 5:00pm. Shortly after, the room was filled with guests, and the line, which snaked around itself, was overflowing out the door. As friends and neighbors continued to arrive, the buzzing grew until the room was absolutely swelling with conversation. The group appeared to be a happy crowd, and many seemed to know each other well, shouting hellos, striking up conversations and waving across the room. People ordered drinks, perused the raffle items and found their seats to the backdrop of country and oldies music provided by The Spare parts, a bass, drums and vocals ensemble complete with disco ball. As the hour approached, the room was quickly filling to capacity of what would be a sold-out house. “The guest count had to be stopped at 200 due to space,” said Mark. “We easily could have sold more!”
Around 8:00pm, as guests enjoyed their choice of dessert bars or brownie with their coffee, the raffles began. Cash raffle prizes of $100 and $200 respectively were generously donated by Valley Fuel. The $100 prize was won by Brock Baird, who in like spirit, donated it back to the Point Project, and the $200 prize was happily won by a little girl. Other raffle prizes included a Christmas tree, an overnight and dinner for two at the Esperanza in Penn Yan, two separate beer-filled coolers, a wooden holiday snowman holding a gift certificate to the Village Clipper, an attractive bandana wreath, two collections of scratch offs, a wooden tray with wine and other items and a mule basket. Afterwards guests slowly filtered out, although many clustered in groups to chat around tables and drinks, clearly reluctant to end such an enjoyable evening. “We would like to thank Cory Mark Farms of Wayland for donating the potatoes,” said Mark. “We would also like to thank the Wayland Rotary, assisted by the Wayland Legion Auxiliary. Their kitchen staff was the backbone of this successful event. The community really came together, and we are grateful!” The American Legion Post 402 is currently planning to host two more fundraisers, although the details have not yet been determined.
Delicious flavors were served up in large portions at the American Legion in Wayland!
At 6:00pm, guests were called up for the dinner of their choice by table. The Surf and Turf Dinner, also referred to as a Lobster Bake, included one’s choice of a lobster or ribeye steak meal for a very reasonable $25 and one’s choice of a surf & turf or double lobster at $35. The ribeye steak, cooked over a fire pit behind the building by steak connoisseurs Bob Fleishman and his wife, was a tender, juicy medium rare, and the portions were quite generous, including quite possibly the largest baked potatoes in the area. The tables and sides included corn on the cob, sweet coleslaw, rolls and huge baked potatoes to accompany the show-stopping proteins. Cups of melted butter were provided, and scissors and sour cream graced each table alongside traditional salt and pepper shakers. Guests Amanda and her husband, John, remarked that the large boiled lobsters were sweet and delicious. The fresh lobsters had been brought in from Maine for the occasion, thanks to Dustin and Fred Shutt, and cooked to perfection thanks to Legion chef extraordinaire, Bon Regelsberger. Fellow guests Elizabeth and Paul added that, “You definitely got what you paid for!” The fact that the roaring swell had been reduced to a low hum was perhaps the greatest compliment.

Program Meets Underserved Nursing Need in Philadelphia Area (NAPSI)—By 2030, the baby boomer generation, totaling more than 2.1 million in Pennsylvania, will be over 65.
