SERVE UP WARMTH FOR THE HOLIDAYS People often associate holiday imbibing with eggnog, but many other beverages can be enjoyed this time of year. Wassail is a hot, mulled cider that was traditionally consumed while wassailing, a ritual of Medieval English Christmas and Twelfth Night celebrations. A warm beverage and caroling go hand-in-hand. Wassail can be made in many different ways, depending on one’s tastes. But cider is an integral ingredient in most wassail recipes. Home cocktail creators can use this basic recipe and modify as they see fit. Wassail Serves 8 to 10 1/2 gallon apple cider

Real Estate ____________________35 Sip & Dine _____________________9

2 cups orange juice or pineapple juice 1/4 cup lemon juice 8 whole cloves 4 cinnamon sticks

Tis the Season _____________________4

1 cup orange juice Whiskey, if desired

Vibes & Rants ____________________13

Add all ingredients to a large pot over medium heat. Allow to boil. Reduce and simmer for 30 to 45 minutes. Strain out the cloves and cinnamon sticks. For an alcoholic drink, add whiskey to desired taste. Wassail is traditionally served out of a communal punch bowl, but can also be presented in individual mugs garnished with cinnamon sticks.

Local Sodus family needs a Christmas miracle On November 20th Michael Laird was rear ended in a horrible auto accident on Rt. 104 in the town of Williamson. Michael suffered multiple injuries and is paralyzed from the chest down. He is still in ICU on a ventilator. Michael and his wife are proud parents to 8-year-old triplets and a 6-month-old baby. Michael and his family need prayers of support from their community. In addition, a GoFundMe page is accepting donations to assist the family with Michael’s crushing medical bills and the family’s lost income. FUN FOR ALL

H O li day g am e s

Stocking Guessing Game Fill a stocking with small toys and Christmas items, for example, a candy cane, bell, small car, or pinecone. Let the kids feel the stocking and try to identify the contents. The child with the most correct guesses is the winner.

Jingle Bell Tossing

That Present Is Mine!

Adhere ten plastic cups in a “bowling pin” triangle on a heavy piece of cardboard with hot glue. Provide small jingle bells purchased at the dollar store for kids to toss into the cups. For older children, let them play in teams or pairs. Whoever gets the most jingle bells in the cup wins.

Have each kid bring a lightly used toy wrapped as a Christmas gift. After the children sit in a circle, randomly choose a kid to start this game by picking out a present for themselves. They unwrap the gift, and the next child has the option of taking the gift already opened or choose one from the other wrapped presents.

Shopping locally is a great w ay to benefit your community and, in many instances, your bottom line. W hen consumers shop locally, they help stimulate their local economies, creating jobs for their neighbors by helping local businesses grow and thrive. Shopping locally also saves shoppers long trips to the mall that can w aste expensive fuel, especially if consumers don’t find w hat they’re looking for. Shopping locally is especially important w hen the economy is struggling, as smaller businesses are not alw ays as capable of bearing the brunt of a recession as larger ones.

On the coldest night in December, our horses decided to take an unaccompanied run through Churchville all the way down Chisholm lane. I want to thank all who helped in their capture and return home. From the anonymous drivers who moved their cars so they could not run on the expressway, and those drivers who stopped and turned their lights off, so they did not frighten them. The Sheriffs who responded were wonderful, from holding our horses as we gathered saddles to ride them home, to stopping traffic so that we could take them safely on rRoute 36 and back over the expressway. If it was not for the kindness of strangers, our animals would not have made it home in one piece and uninjured! Thank you and have a wonderful holiday. PS We apologize for the hoof prints!

Thank you, Lighthouse Wesleyan Church, for the special honor you gave to our country’s Veterans. It was very moving to see each of the Veterans receive a handmade quilt and to see the children and teens “fist-bump” a hero. To all Veterans and their families, thank you for the sacrifices you gave to our country to help preserve the freedoms we enjoy every day. Our Veterans and their families are true heroes! A recent writer wrote "imagine having a neighbor who doesn't think it's necessary to keep his lawn mowed". That is a big assumption! Were it not for my neighbors, my lawn would be unmowed most of the year. Not because I don't care, but because I am unable to do it, nor can I afford to hire someone. When I was able to take care of my lawn, it was very well taken care of and I had beautiful flower beds. I am no longer able to do that, and I miss doing it. Don't always assume the worst!

I was dreading having to go to the DMV to renew my driver’s license. I went to the Fairport mobile office and was pleasantly surprised! Not only were the staff there friendly and helpful, it took me less than 30 minutes to get through the process. I had, of course, looked online prior to my visit and gathered all the needed materials and filled out the forms. I was a little nervous when I arrived to see so many people waiting, but the way the staff handled the process it went very quickly and smoothly. Thank you Fairport Mobile DMV! A Big Thank You to all the women of Zion Church, of Avon, for the lovely silver tea on Sunday 12/8/19. It was very enjoyable.

Page 13

In the late afternoon of Sunday, December 8th, I was visiting the Rush Cemetery to pay my respects. When I started to leave, I realized my car could not get off an icy spot. I was stuck. After many failed attempts to free the car, I was about to walk to town when out of the dark appeared a truck bearing a compassionate couple who lent more than a hand: sage advice, skilled driving, muscle power and determination. Yes, two guardian angels from Scottsville gifted me with their greatly appreciated care and assistance. Thank you both and may you experience many blessings throughout the new year. Suzanne Thank you to the people of Avon who organized the Holiday Happenings.

THE ART OF

Christmas Present 2020 is set to be a big year for my family, including moving, marriage, babies and all of those other “life changing” events that allow you to adjust your health insurance. In fact, every time I have started to write this piece, I have put “Christmas 2020,” only to facepalm and delete it. My mind seems to already be living in the new year. Still, I never noticed how true this was until I almost missed the excitement in my four-year-old’s voice when he mentioned decorating for Christmas 2019 and the wonder in my seven-year-old’s eyes as we lit up this year’s decorations. I suddenly realized holiday traditions had become perfunctory, its films obligatory. Christmas spirit itself had been postponed until 2020. (Please note we wish all of our readers happy holidays for whatever special day they celebrate!) It’s too easy to live our everyday lives with our minds in the future. The new year is being heralded as a one of clarity, 20/20 representing perfect vision. It is also said that hindsight is 20/20. We are living in that hindsight right now. While this saying is usually taken to mean one’s perspective is most clear on life after the fact, does it have to be? Can’t that clarity be experienced in the here and now? If you find yourself keeping company with the spirits of the Past or Future, these tried-and-true holiday resolutions might just help you embrace Christmas Present and reawaken your Christmas Spirit.

BY AMANDA DUDEK

Don’t wait for the “perfect” moment. Take 100 photos; take 1,001 photos! Take them while the tree is lopsided and your hair’s a mess, after the kids dressed themselves and before you lose those ten pounds. Waiting for the perfect “now” means waiting for the perfect “never,” because you and your family are real, and perfection isn’t. Beauty is in every imperfect moment lived together with love. So snap, snap, snap–and don’t filter! Put your phone on pause. Switch to airplane mode so you can take a break from calls, texts and social media. Free yourself from distractions so that you can embrace what is in front of you right now. Look your children in the eye and let them know they have your undivided attention, that they are important. Don’t “unplug,” though, because all those twinkling lights have to draw power from somewhere! Slow down. It is said often – and it is good advice, especially at Christmas – that we all need to step away from the busyness of life from time to time. Set aside that list of holiday must-haves and to-dos and experience the holidays through the eyes of a child, whether your own or your grandchildren, nieces, nephews or a friend’s. Admire the light displays and examine the presents under the tree together. Build the anticipation and fuel the imagination. Encourage acts of kindness and generosity. Share favorite songs and stories from your childhood. Make holiday favorites. There is something special about preparing foods for the holidays, whether it is rolling the dough for sugar cookies or balancing the mix for a fantastic mulled cider. This literally hands-on approach draws all your senses into the experience. It is hard to be anywhere else when you are surrounded by the delicious fragrance of cinnamon. Choose wisely. Some traditions are meant to live on; others not so much. Trying to do it all is neither possible nor enjoyable, so focus on what is most meaningful to you and your family.

Serves 6 to 8 2 to 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 pounds apples, peeled, cored and cut into thick slices 1/2 cup honey, preferably sage honey 1/2 cup white wine Zest of 1 lemon Juice of 1 lemon Fresh sage sprigs for garnish 1. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the apples, turn the heat to high and sauté until they begin to brown on the edges, about 5 minutes. If some are getting too well done, remove them and place on a plate while the rest continue to cook, then return them to the skillet when all are done.

COMMON TERMS FOUND ON FOOD LABELS Sodium: Otherwise known as salt, sodium is necessary to maintain nerve and muscle health. However, many people consume too much sodium, oftentimes because of processed foods. WebMD notes that sodium intake should be limited to 2,300 milligrams or less per day. Certain people, such as those over the age of 51, African Americans or those with certain conditions, such as hypertension and diabetes, should consume no more than 1,500 milligrams of sodium per day.

2. Reduce the heat to low and add the honey, wine, lemon zest, lemon juice, and 1/2 cup water. Cover and allow to cook until the apples are tender but still firm; you don’t want them to turn into applesauce.

NOTICE Town of West Sparta Snow accumulation is monitored and evaluated throughout the day and night to ensure our resources have the best possible effect on snow removal. Plowing typically begins in the early morning hours and continues throughout the day and evening as warranted. According to Section 1219 of the Vehicle and Traffic Law and Section 214 of the Highway Law of New York State, snow removal operators (Plow Services and individuals) on private properties may not push, pile or blow snow out into or across any public roadway. A violation of this section shall be punishable by a fine. Be considerate of others. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our roadways safe for the traveling public.

No motor vehicle or other vehicle of any kind shall be allowed or permitted to park on any town highway or its shoulder during the period of snow removal. According to the State Attorney General’s Opinion No. 99-1, when a property owner places his or her mailbox in the Town’s right-of-way, the Town is not liable for damage to the mailbox if such damage is caused by non-negligent snow removal activities. The owner might even be compelled to remove the box under NYS Highway Law 319. When the Town is responsible for damage to a reasonably placed mailbox, repair or replacement is a question of fact relating to the conduct of the snow removal activities. A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Dec. 28, 1793, British-born American revolutionary Thomas Paine, author of “Common Sense,” is arrested in France for treason, having been tried in absentia and convicted. Paine was imprisoned in a former palace, where he had a large room with windows and catered meals.

What is a standby generator? No one wants to imagine losing power in their homes. But homeowners and renters face such situations every day. For those who aren’t prepared to confront power outages, doing so can be a nuisance in the best of situations, and potentially very dangerous, if not fatal, in the most dire instances. Thankfully, no one has to go long without power. Standby generators are backup electrical systems that operate automatically. Once the generator senses a power loss, which can occur within seconds of a utility outage, its automatic transfer switch essentially gives the generator a wakeup call, commanding it to begin supplying power to the circuits in a home. Some transfer switches may be automated, requiring no effort on the part of homeowners when the power goes out. Others may need to be flipped on like one might flip a light switch. Seniors and/or people with mobility issues may benefit from standby generators with automated transfer switches, as they may find it difficult to manually turn the switches themselves. That’s especially true if the power goes out overnight, when visibility inside a home with no power is compromised. Standby generators are typically connected to the circuits throughout a home, which means they can kick in and run HVAC systems, refrigerators and security systems, among other devices. That helps people stay comfortable and sleep well during power outages, while also ensuring they won’t have to throw away any groceries or spend times in their homes without functioning security systems. Standby generators can help people prepare for and overcome storms and natural disasters, making them an invaluable addition to any home. TF201602 GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

* On Dec. 24, 1851, a fire sweeps through the Library of Congress and destroys two-thirds of Thomas Jefferson’s personal literary collection. Jefferson had sold his personal library of 6,487 books to Congress after the British burned the Congressional library in 1814. * On Dec. 23, 1888, Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh, suffering from severe depression, cuts off the lower part of his left ear with a razor. He later documented the event in a painting titled “Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear.”

LIFE IS LOUD—BUT YOU CAN STILL ENJOY A QUIET HOME (NAPSI)—Home life is changing, so sound dampening is more important than ever. Life is getting louder inside and around the home. Televisions, home theaters, computers and video games blare from almost every room. Family cell phones ring or buzz. Life gets loud.

Excessive noise is also linked to tinnitus, sleep deprivation, cardiovascular disease and an increased risk of mental illness. A German study found that depression and anxiety increased as annoyance from noise increased. Fortunately, there can be a way to protect yourself and your family. Your home’s insulation can do more than keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. The right kind can help transform your home into a quiet retreat and sanctuary from the outside world. The next time you have the opportunity to reinsulate your home, soundproofing insulation can be an excellent choice to help you escape everyday noise. Stone wool insulation is a top choice for professional recording studios since it’s an excellent acoustic barrier that actually absorbs the sound. One, Rockwool Safe ‘n’ Sound stone wool insulation, is a performance-tested product that provides higher sound absorption against low-frequency (bass) ranges that other types of insulation struggle to block. KEEP YOUR TREE FRESH THIS CHRISTMAS Cut pre-cut trees before leaving the lot. Pre-cut trees can make it through the holiday season looking their best, but buyers should request that employees cut as much as two inches off the bottom of the tree before leaving the lot. Once trees are cut, sap begins to seal their base, making it hard for them to absorb water. By requesting that between one and two inches be removed from the bottom of the tree at the time of purchase, buyers are ensuring their trees will be able to absorb the water they’ll need to make it through the season when they get home.

MAKE THE HOLIDAY SEASON MORE ECO-FRIENDLY Create an eco-friendly party theme. Many holiday parties have themes. For example, “ugly sweater parties” have become so popular that many clothing manufacturers now intentionally produce colorful sweaters that might otherwise draw the ire of fashionistas. Hosts planning to throw an ugly sweater party can easily transform such festivities into something more eco-friendly by encouraging guests to purchase their sweaters from thrift stores. A Christmas tree planting party is another eco-friendly party theme that can benefit the planet and revitalize local forests at a time of year when they might be depleted due to the demand for natural Christmas trees. Jan H. Lesterhuis December 7, 2019 Livonia: Jan passed peacefully on December 7, 2019 at age 71. Predeceased by his parents Heiko and Klasiena Lesterhuis. Survived by his son Austin (Heather) Lesterhuis of Cohocton; grandchildren, Briana and Clayton Lesterhuis; brother Heiko (Deb) Lesterhuis of Springwater; also survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. Jan was born on May 12, 1948 in Rochester, NY to the late Heiko and Klasiena Lesterhuis. He graduated from Livonia Central High School in 1968. He went on to study Mechanical Engineering at RIT. He spent many years as a salesman for Mack trucks. He finished out his career in the school bus industry. Jan had many passions, including his love for vintage sleds; especially Yamahas, competitive shooting, hunting, racing slot cars with family and friends, and most importantly his time with his grandchildren. Those who knew Jan knew he was never one to mince words. His straight-forward personality made him so easy to love. You never had to question what was on his mind. A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held at the Cohocton Pavilion, 15 S. Main Street, Cohocton, NY on Saturday, May 30th, 2020 at 1:00pm. We ask those in attendance to bring a dish to pass, your beverage of preference, and a story to tell! SIMPLIFY COOKING FOR A CROWD THIS HOLIDAY SEASON Share some cooking duties. Another way to simplify cooking for a crowd is to invite guests to bring along a side dish or dessert. Guests who live nearby can make something in advance of the big meal, while hosts can hand over their kitchens to overnight guests who express a willingness to contribute their own homecooked dish to the party. Sharing the cooking duties gives hosts more time to connect with friends and family and serves as a great way to plan the menu in advance.

Green • 585-519-1264 • Wayland BRICK HOMES FIGHT FIRES THE LONGEST (NAPSI)—Firefighters report that it takes about an hour and a half for a fire to breach a brick home-as compared to fiber cement in under an hour and vinyl siding in just minutes. Choosing brick exteriors to protect their own firehouses, firefighters say brick homes help slow the spread, offering the extra few minutes to help save lives and property as this brief video shows.

While the International Residential Code (IRC) does not require cladding on singlefamily homes to have a fire rating, the International Building Code (IBC) acknowledges that fired-clay brick has tested to provide a minimum one-hour fire resistance rating alone, regardless of backing material. This is something that synthetic materials—such as fiber cement—cannot claim. Primarily made of clay, brick is classified as a noncombustible material that will not burn, melt or combust.

Foldable, reusable, lightweight grocery bags that will quickly become your favorites!

In a one-hour severe fire test conducted independently for the Brick Industry Association (BIA), vinyl siding burned after only 18 minutes, fiber cement failed within one hour and fired-clay brick withstood the flames after one hour. The test was conducted in accordance with ASTM E119, the Standard Test Methods for Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials.

Made from 100% Recycled Ripstop Nylon material & are machine washable Tax, shipping & handling included in price

Risk of Surrogacy at Advanced Age ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: Would you please comment on common or uncommon issues that might be expected in a pregnancy at age 57? I am overall very healthy, with no issues other than slightly elevated LDL. I have not gone through menopause. I had four full-term pregnancies, the last at age 35 (after which I had my tubes tied), and no miscarriages. I asked my doctor two years ago if I would have an issue being a surrogate and was told there was no reason I couldn’t be, but my current physician told me that it can be very dangerous at my age. I am concerned that the practice is just covering itself against any liability. I realize that this is my decision alone and I would not hold my doctors accountable, but I’d also like the real truth regarding any potential issues I would be likely to encounter. I appreciate your thoughts. -- M.V. ANSWER: I admire your willingness to consider being a surrogate. However, the risks of pregnancy in a 57-year-old woman are significant. A study from the U.K. from 2016 quantified the risks pretty thoroughly; however, of the 233 women studied, only two of them were older than 57, so your risks are probably higher than the average risk for an older mother in the study (which was defined here as 48 years or older at the date of delivery). Before I go over the risks, let me point out that one major risk for older mothers, Down syndrome, may not apply, since the ovum (egg) you would be carrying would come from another woman and it is her age that determines the risk for the fetus. Older mothers also are more likely to carry twins (or more than two fetuses). Compared with younger mothers, older mothers have a higher risk for: high blood pressure during pregnancy (15% vs. 5%); pre-eclampsia, also called toxemia (6% vs. 2%); diabetes during pregnancy (18% vs. 4%); hemorrhage after delivery (26% vs. 15%); Caesarean section (78% vs. 33%); preterm delivery (22% vs. 8%); and admission of the baby to the intensive care unit (3% vs. less than 1%). Miscarriage rate (after 11 weeks) in women over 55 is estimated to be about 10%, compared with 1% in younger women. Maternal death is much more likely for older women than younger; however, that risk is small, less than 2 per 1,000 in a separate Swedish study of mothers over 45. Overall, these risks are not small. You should think through your risks before making a decision. I’m disappointed in the lack of advice you received. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: The 71-year-old woman from a recent column who finds sticking her finger to test her blood glucose too painful to be willing to do it likely was never told that while sticking her finger at the tip IS painful, sticking at the side of the end of the finger is barely painful, if at all. I find myself surprised that those who stick fingers for blood at the hospital don’t seem to know this either. Shame on them. -- R.S. ANSWER: There are more nerve endings at the tip of the finger, so that is more painful for most. There often is better blood flow on the sides as well. Thank you for writing with this reminder. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. HOLIDAY PARTY MUST-HAVES Decking the halls is a holiday tradition, and hosts should make an effort to string some holiday decorations before welcoming guests into their homes. A Christmas tree might be the most ubiquitous decorative item come the holidays, so hosts can make their tree the centerpiece of their decor. Hang some mistletoe around the house, which also can be adorned with season-specific plants like holly and poinsettias. If kids are attending the party, a kid-friendly decoration station can even be set up to ensure the youngsters have fun and stay busy during the festivities.

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 20, 2019

By Clement Clarke Moore 'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse; The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof The prancing and pawing of each little hoof. As I drew in my hand, and was turning around, Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads; And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap, Had just settled down for a long winter's nap,

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot, And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot; A bundle of toys he had flung on his back, And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter. Away to the window I flew like a flash, Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

His eyes -- how they twinkled! his dimples how merry! His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry! His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow, And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below, When, what to my wondering eyes should appear, But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer,

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth, And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath; He had a broad face and a little round belly, That shook, when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly.

With a little old driver, so lively and quick, I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick. More rapid than eagles his coursers they came, And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf, And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself; A wink of his eye and a twist of his head, Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;

"Now, DASHER! now, DANCER! now, PRANCER and VIXEN! On, COMET! on CUPID! on, DONNER and BLITZEN! To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall! Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!"

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work, And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk, And laying his finger aside of his nose, And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly, When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky, So up to the house-top the coursers they flew, With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too.

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle, And away they all flew like the down of a thistle. But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight, HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO ALL, AND TO ALL A GOOD-NIGHT!

Our Gift to You… Merry Christmas GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your love of the holidays creates a special bond between you and the people in your life. Use this as a way of building stronger relationships that will carry over well beyond this time. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A new approach could go a long way toward resolving a painful estrangement, especially at this holiday time. And since your aspects favor friendship this week, why not go ahead and try it? GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your positives continue to dominate, and any negative factors that squeeze in can be dealt with easily. The secret is to tackle them at once and not allow them to benefit by your neglect. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Good news: A colleague’s remarks could help you move toward ultimately resolving that persistent workplace situation. Meanwhile, enjoy the holidays with loved ones. LEO (July 23 to August 22) No one reflects the bright holiday more than all you Leos and Leonas who love the shimmer and glimmer of the season. P.S.: There just might be a very special something from Santa. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Celebrate the holidays by being more receptive to new experiences. Overriding the Virgo reluctance to try new things could be the best gift you’ve given yourself in a long while. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Good news about a loved one makes the holidays even more festive. Expect some unexpected gifts, so be prepared with a few nicely wrapped packages of goodies to offer in return. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) The holiday season provides an opportunity to meet new people, some of whom you might even consider “worthy” enough to join the Scorpio’s select group of friends. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You always bring your own wonderful sparkle and light to the holidays, and don’t be surprised if this year someone special reaches out to respond to your warmth in kind. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Togetherness is the dominant theme for the Goat’s holiday celebrations this year. That means reaching out to bring everyone you care for into your very own special circle of light. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A reminder of a very special moment from the past makes the holidays more memorable for the romantic Aquarian. New friendships hold the promise of a romantic future as well. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Getting into the swim of things for all you partyloving Pisceans is easy enough this holiday season. And, of course, you can expect to impress people wherever you go. BORN THIS WEEK: Your dedication brings you the success you strive for, and your generosity impels you to reach out and help others on their way up. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR MOBILE PHONE ETIQUETTE Keep private conversations private. When the phone rings while you are in public and you don’t want to allow the call to go to voicemail, answer the call and immediately and politely explain that you are in public. This indicates to the person on the other end of the line that you do not want to broadcast potentially sensitive information to strangers, while also showing those around you that you respect them enough to reserve such conservations for private settings.

BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Eat a productivity-friendly lunch. If afternoons are when your productivity really starts to drop off, it might be time to reconsider what you eat for lunch. The body, which converts the foods we eat into glucose that energizes our brains and promotes alertness, processes different types of foods differently. So the food you eat for lunch may affect your energy levels for the rest of the day. For example, eating pasta provides a quick burst of energy because pasta releases glucose quickly. But that burst is often followed by a noticeable downturn in energy levels sparked by fading glucose levels that make it difficult for the brain to focus. In contrast, fruits and vegetables aid in the production of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that helps the brain stay motivated and engaged. Including some fruits and vegetables in your lunch or snacks may just lead to a more productive workday.
