Properly m aint ained headlight s vast ly im prove driver saf et y Don’t just replace but upgrade your headlight bulbs. Bulbs that have started to dim need to be repla ced, but auto enthusiasts or maintenance-savvy drivers know they can upgrade their bulbs w hen replacing them. Indu stry experts recommend replacing headlamp bulbs every tw o years, and replacing them in pairs to make sure the vehicle’s lighting is equally balanced. But rather than sticking w ith the bulbs provided by the car maker, look for a bulb that makes it easier to see at night and during hazardous conditions. These headlights put more light on the road, helping to make up for poor w eather, dimly lit roads, aging headlights, and even the loss of n ight vision many drivers experience as they age. Capable of providing up to 100 percent more light than the stan dard halogen bulbs found on the majority of vehicles today, special headlights create a better beam patte rn that is dramatically longer than the standard bulbs, vastly improving driver vision and safety.

HOW TO SAFELY NAVIGATE WET ROADS Drive slowly. Many fall road trippers are already driving slowly so they can fully enjoy the fall scenery. But it’s important that drivers slow down even more when encountering wet roadways, as driving slow can reduce the risk of a vehicle hydroplaning. When vehicles hydroplane, they slide uncontrollably on wet surfaces as the tires rise up on the water covering the roads. AAA notes that tires on vehicles driving as slow as 35 miles per hour can still lose some contact with the road, so drivers should maintain low speeds when driving on wet roads and reduce their speeds even further during heavy rains.

GIFTS THAT PAMPER AND REJUVENATE Stress can be bad for the body, contributing to depression, anxiety, hypertension, and even obesity. Unfortunately, more than half of working adults and 47 percent of all Americans say they are concerned with the amount of stress in their lives, according to a survey from the American Psychological Association. Canadians, too, are feeling stressed. The North American research company Ipsos found that stress affects 76 percent of the Canadian population. Reducing stress can be especially important during the holiday season, which, thanks in part to its hectic nature, tends to produce extra feelings of stress. Gifts that pamper, relax and rejuvenate might be the ideal fit for those who need a little rest and relaxation. Tis the Season

a festive table on a dime
YOU
C AN
DO
IT!
Presentation is king when it comes to setting a memorable holiday table, and it needn’t be daunting or expensive. Here are some essential tips that will garner rave reviews at your next gathering.
Mercury Glass It’s everywhere these days. From trees, to pumpkins, to candlestick holders, it’s timeless and transitions well from season to season.
Mix and Match Don’t be afraid to mix metallics. This gold flatware, purchased second-hand, is a standout.
Add Interest with Height A mix of faux and metallic pine trees give your table the height it needs. Be sure to place them strategically so your guests can easily see one another.
Start by scouring the house to see what you can mix and match to bring your table to life. Don’t be afraid to ask parents or grandparents for family heirlooms that they may be willing to part with. One of the best investments you can make is solid white porcelain dishes. You can get them for a steal at most places and they’ll take you through every season. For a fun twist, layer them with whimsical holiday plates. Solid red napkins add a pop of color, and when placed under the plates, there’s no need for a runner or placemat.
Be Resourceful Think outside the box. These heavy metal pinecones are confiscated from an old cuckoo clock. Add some freshly clipped greens and you’re good to go.

Wooden reindeer, real pinecones and mixed greenery take the textural feel to the next level. Snips of spruce or boxwood trees from the yard up the texture, and best of all are free. Details make all the difference. Adding personal placecards is a great touch that makes everyone feel special. How about adding a surprise lottery ticket to the bottom of a random plate? Sometimes a winner, and always a hit!

Experiment Pinterest is a great place to get ideas. Take a stab at different napkin folding techniques and see what suits your fancy.
Where to splurge This dining room table is a restored farmhouse table. It seats 22 people when all leaves are in. If you’re going to go all out, do it here and know that it will be enjoyed for generations to come.

SHOPPERS SAVE BIG ON GROCERIES WITH HEALTHY SAVINGS® POWERED BY AARP FOUNDATION (NAPSI) — Good nutrition is important at any age. But for older adults on a tight budget, regular access to nutritious foods can be limited—and expensive.
Creative Director
.............................. Cristie Leone
A new program aims to change that by making it easier to get healthy foods at the local grocery store for an affordable price. With Healthy Savings® powered by AARP Foundation, shoppers pay a small fee of $4.99 per calendar year for a card that can save them up to $200 a month on groceries.
Production Supervisor
................................. Jeff Wasson
The program is part of AARP Foundation’s work to help people over 50 with limited income eat more nutritious foods, ultimately improving their well-being. Research shows that more than 10 million older adults don’t get enough nutritious food on a daily basis, most often because they can’t afford it.
Circulation Manager
............................. Shari Rapone
Eating healthy is about more than affordability, however. Not only does Healthy Savings reduce costs, it also identifies healthy options in the store. All products available through Healthy Savings are scored against the USDA’s Healthy Eating Index to make sure they qualify as nutritious. The index makes it convenient to choose the healthiest foods, which include lean meats, eggs, yogurt, whole grains, and a wide range of other options.
Billing/Office Manager

The typical over-50 diet scores low in key food groups like whole grains and dairy. By encouraging the purchase of more of these nutrients through coupon discounts, Healthy Savings can help older adults:

Shoppers who sign up for Healthy Savings receive a card in the mail and can download a mobile app, both of which can be used at 22,000 grocery stores across the U.S. for instant savings at checkout. The savings come on top of any from store loyalty cards and manufacturers’ coupons (so long as coupons don’t add up to more than the price of the item).
National Award Winning Paper
Each week, new coupons are automatically loaded onto the card and app—no coupon clipping required. Over the course of a year, Healthy Savings can save shoppers as much as $2,400. More information, including recipes and tips for shopping smart, is at aarpfoundation.org/save.

AVOID INJURIES WHEN WORKING OUT A desire to live a healthy, active life compels many people to include exercise in their daily routines. Numerous studies have shown that regular workouts that include a combination of strength training and cardiovascular exercise can make bodies less susceptible to injury while reducing a person’s risk for conditions such as heart disease, stroke and diabetes. Exercising is most effective when it’s part of a daily routine, but that routine can be derailed if men and women are not taking the appropriate measures to avoid injury while working out. While even professional athletes succumb to injury from time to time, there are steps everyone can take to avoid injury when working out. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

DID YOU KNOW? Halitosis, or bad breath as it’s commonly known, can result from any number of factors. While food can be a culprit, some additional factors may be contributing to mouth odor as well. Poor dental hygiene is a particular concern. According to Colgate and the American Dental Association, failure to brush and floss teeth regularly leads to the accumulation of food particles in the mouth. This food can collect bacteria and begin to break down, causing a bad aroma. Dry mouth is another condition that causes bad breath. Without adequate saliva production, particles of food that may cause odor are not swept away regularly. Bad breath also may be an indication of a medical condition elsewhere in the body. Upper respiratory infections and gastrointestinal disturbances may contribute to halitosis.
MINIMIZE DARK CIRCLES UNDER THE EYES Undereye circles and swelling can be alleviated when people get to the source of the problem. A combination of treating the sources and masking the issue can help. In severe cases, individuals should visit their dermatologists.

a half ago and have several questions. I seem to be unable to get answers from my pulmonary doctor, as he is always busy and doesn’t have a lot of time to spend with me. How fast does COPD progress? I’m 78 years old, in reasonably good health and exercise regularly. I have chronic bronchitis with a slight amount of emphysema. I had been coughing a little during the day, had mucus in the morning and coughed at night for two to three hours after bedtime -to the extent of having to use a rescue inhaler to settle down and get back to sleep. After he put me on Trelegy, all of those symptoms disappeared, and I feel perfectly normal except for shortness of breath. My other question is what is the life expectancy of a person diagnosed with COPD? I’ve read about answers to this all over the map, from two or three years after diagnosis to 15 or more years. I would presume that it depends on other factors such as physical condition, exercise, weight, etc. But I would like some kind of guideline for someone in my condition. -- T.J. ANSWER: There are two major types of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: chronic bronchitis, where the primary problem is productive cough; and emphysema, which is destruction of the small airways. Shortness of breath is a common feature of all types of COPD. The most prevalent cause is smoking. I can’t answer your questions on rate of progression and overall prognosis without much more information, but it is certainly a good sign that many of your symptoms are well-controlled on treatment. The single biggest factor in rate of progression of COPD is whether you are a smoker, but not being able to exercise, being male and being very underweight are additional risk factors for faster progression. Lung function falls inexorably over time. In people who have no lung disease, the normal decline with aging is never enough to cause symptoms during normal activity. In someone with COPD, the decline over months to years can cause symptoms to occur first with exercise, and then when at rest. Once people have severe symptoms at rest, the prognosis becomes quite poor. No medication can reverse lung damage. Inhaled steroids reduce inflammation and can slow progression somewhat. Inhaled bronchodilators open airways and make breathing easier. Inhaled anticholinergics reduce secretions. Your medication, Trelegy, contains all of these medicines, and is appropriate for people with severe COPD or those who do not have good symptom control with a less intensive regimen. An online calculator for prognosis can be found at https:// bit.ly/2N1UEoy. It can be used if you know how far you can walk in six minutes and the results of your breathing test (specifically, the FEV1%). ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2020 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved Page 12

Holding 1 pretzel rod at a time, dip in melted chocolate, tipping cup to cover about half of rod with chocolate. Allow excess chocolate to drip off pretzel back into cup. Immediately sprinkle coated pretzel with choice of topping. Carefully place coated pretzel rod in pie plate or shallow bowl, leaning uncoated portion on edge. 4. Repeat with remaining pretzels (try to keep pretzels from touching one another in pie plate) and refrigerate about 20 minutes to set coating. Store pretzels in tightly sealed container, with waxed paper between layers, at room temperature up to 1 week. Makes 27 pretzels. * Each serving: About 135 calories, 6g total fat (3g saturated), 3mg cholesterol, 165mg sodium, 18g total carbohydrate, 1g dietary fiber, 3g protein.

GIFT-WRAPPING TIPS AND TRICKS Handle oddly-shaped items Wrapping rectangular boxes can be a snap, but what about something that’s round or full of angles? Think about placing oddly-shaped items inside another item to make the shape more uniform. Shoe boxes, coffee cans and even paper towel rolls can hold items. Then place the wrapping on these containers.

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Looking for a great cause for gifting this year? Go to www. charitynavigator.org to find out more about how your prospective charities rank in areas like CEO pay, money spent on fundraising, etc.
GIFTS FOR PEOPLE WHO HELP YOU YEAR-ROUND Hairdressers Hairdressers go to great lengths to make people look good throughout the year, and those efforts should not be forgotten during the holiday season. Many hairdressers use supplies, such as scissors, they purchase on their own. A gift certificate to a salon supply wholesaler can make for a welcome gift. For those who want to pamper the people who pamper them, a gift certificate to a local spa can make for a wonderful gift for hairdressers this holiday season.
* Need a quick batch of cookies? Keep a box of cake mix on hand. Instead of the listed ingredients, add two eggs and a half-cup of oil to the mix. Mix and shape, then bake at 350 F for 10 minutes. They are really good, and you can get pretty creative.
County Planning Board Seeks Candidates for Four Alternate Members
* Inexpensive gift idea: A cute holiday coffee mug with a bar of chocolate, a packet of hot cocoa or instant coffee, a peppermint stick and a decorative holiday craft pick. Place inside a gallon-size zippertop bag, tie with a ribbon, then trim off the zipper-top, leaving just the plastic. Looks nice. * When holiday cookie time comes, I keep a plastic pitcher of hot water in the sink. I toss cookie cutters into it when I’m finished with them, so the corners are soaking. They really seem to only need a rinse and a quick brush-off afterward. Mine don’t get caked up with dough. -– JoAnn
Are you hoping for a snowy holiday season? • Yes! • Only a white Christmas! • No!
Results From 12-01-20 President Elect Joe Biden has spoken of potentially forgiving some student loans. Should the government offer loan forgiveness?
* Use last year’s Christmas cards as gift tags on this year’s gifts: Just cut out great-looking images and write your own to and from on the back. ●
POLL
Poll Ends 12-08-20
* Dogs and chocolate just don’t mix, so keep those holiday plates full of delicious chocolate morsels up and out of the reach of pets.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Q: DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My new cat, “Corky,” is absolutely shredding the fabric legs of my sofa! I buy plenty of toys for him, so why is he so attracted to my expensive furniture? -- Leo in Little Rock, Arkansas DEAR LEO: Welcome to cat ownership! Shredded furniture frequently comes with the territory. But please don’t think I’m telling you to get used to it. This is a common problem. You will find plenty of advice online on ways to stop your cat from scratching up all of the vertical surfaces in your house. Cats adore fabric sofas; they are ideal because the wood underneath sharpens their claws while the fabric provides just the right amount of resistance. You’ll need to attack this problem from a few angles. First, by teaching Corky not to scratch furniture. Put a scratching post next to the sofa. When he reaches up to the sofa leg, gently reach under his paws and lift them up and away. Then, place Corky in front of the scratching post and pet him. Repeat this every time. A faster way to stop the problem is to shake a can of coins or hiss loudly, but this is negative reinforcement that provides no alternative for his scratching. And cats need to scratch! Once Corky starts going to the scratching post first, gradually move the post away from the sofa. To save your sofa fabric during this time, cover it with a thick layer (or multiple layers) of plastic sheeting either stapled or duct taped into place. The added benefit is that plastic is not a pleasurable scratching material, so Corky will eventually start ignoring it. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. Safety goggles and glasses are a must-have for any do-it-yourselfer. They will provide a barrier between the eye and flying debris. According to VisionWeb, an eye education resource, most of the 110,000 eye injuries that occur each year in homes within the United States result from splashes with household cleaners, flying debris such as wood chips, or getting hit by branches. Many of these injuries can be prevented by wearing eye protection. GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Thank you & Best Wishes! Thank you with all my heart to Habitat for Humanity of Livingston County. Thanks to them with the support of many volunteers and my family, my children and I are safely and happily moved into our new home. A special thanks and extra well wishes to John Marks, Butch Erbe and Ron Walker as they “retire” from Habitat. I am so thankful for all you have done and for the chance to get to know you all! God bless you richly. Amanda D. & Sons
Thanksgiving I just finished reading Amanda Dudek’s Hometown Story about Thanksgiving from November 20th and want to thank her and GVPS for sharing such an uplifting and positive message with your readers.
For the birds To those maintenance people in parking lots that chase people down who feed the starving seagulls: Seagulls are scavengers – they actually clean up garbage from parking lots and the environment. I always pick a remote corner to feed them. After they eat bread, Tostitos, and popcorn, there is nothing left to clean up. Man has burned their
trees, and polluted their drinking water with climate change, paved their space and run over them with traffic, and stolen their habitat with commercial development. Half of all-American birds are gone. Yet you threatened to kick me off the property if I fed them. Another man told me it was illegal to feed them. Where is your heart and sense of justice for birds and animals?

Lowe’s In Brockport Rocks! On Black Friday, we spoke to Derik, the store manager, over the phone concerning a price drop in something that we had just purchased. He said we were within the 30-day price match

and gave us the credit for the difference in the price we had paid. He was nice enough to do it over the phone, (we had our receipt with all the needed information), so that we would not have to go to the store. He was kind, quick, and efficient. No hassles! Thank you so much for painlessly handling the matter. We appreciated it.

GLOW Women Rise Raises the Bar BY AMANDA DUDEK
N
ew York's GLOW Region is comprised of Genesee, Livingston, Orleans, and Wyoming Counties, home to some of the most charming villages and countryside in Western New York. At the same time, the region is often a scene of struggle as many of its women must strive for success. Dorothy Avery and her not-forprofit, GLOW Women Rise seek to support these women personally and professionally.
GLOW Women Rise (GWR) offers, in its stated mission, a nonjudgmental place for women of the region to come together for support and connection, advocacy – safety net services [and other] information, and opportunities to attend seminars and workshops. "Our goal with GWR is to empower, engage, and elevate women while hopefully providing them with some valuable tools," said Avery who dreams of the day when GWR has its own building. "We want to be a one-stop shop for women in search of support." As women continue to pursue professional careers, assistance for them is falling behind. "Nothing is getting taken off our plate, just getting added, including caring for parents and grandparents," explained Avery, referencing a friend who cares both for her own children and for her elderly parents. She observed that the challenges of a rural settings, little transportation and few resources, can add another layer of stress. "GWR would love to be the place where a woman could go if she was having a really bad day, grab a cup of coffee and share – and it would be free," said Avery. Avery hopes to create more resources for handling stress and its causes, resources tailored to women. "Before GWR, I was a member of a couple of groups in Batavia," she explained. "I found them to be male dominated. Women did all of the organizing, but men were the leaders. Women's issues were not being addressed, so some friends and I decided to start our own group in 2018. Thanks to Millie Tomidy Pepper, we met at the YWCA for a time. Now, we rent a space at GoArt!, have incorporated, and our nonprofit status is pending." "Women can do so much, but there is a lack of support unless you can afford to pay," continued Avery. "There is too much disparity between the Haves and the Have Nots. With GWR, we are trying to level the playing field. Women are so overwhelmed they don't even have the time to ask for help, but when women stick together, we can solve these problems with our different skills and abilities. As such a new group, we still need to take some time to get these ideas flowing." Avery pointed out that a questionnaire to determine what kind of programming and support
GLOW women are most interested in is available on the GWR website: www.glowwomenrise.org "If we can create our own network of women supporting women, we can cheer each other on to do great things!" Avery exclaimed. While COVID-19 has admittedly been a big setback for this all-volunteer organization, GWR has found ways to continue this mission. "We bridged the gap with ZOOM, although we know not everyone has access to it," she said. "Over ZOOM, we held the first session of our Ready, Set, GLOW! Series, which was about handling the holidays this year. We invited a therapist to talk with our group, and it was great!" Importantly, all the programming, including our Ready, Set, GLOW! Series, is absolutely free. "The key is you shouldn't have to put extra money together to benefit," insisted Avery. "Our next session is on December 14th, and it is about practical self-care with adult bingo and prizes thrown in. Then, in January, we will be putting together kits for our vision board session to help women envision what they want for themselves in 2021. In March, we hope to once again host our Women's Empowerment Forum focused on overcoming obstacles, which was so well-received." GWR's sessions are making an impact. "One of the women who attended our last sessions sent us a very nice note, sharing with us how our session about how to cope with the holidays had helped her realize her own need for stronger boundaries," shared Avery. GWR also supports women in practical ways. "One young woman was just going to start her first professional job, so we took her clothes shopping for office-appropriate attire," said Avery. "We want everyone to benefit, take that leap, and be daring!" As GWR moves forward into 2021, informed by responses to its questionnaire, one new goal has clearly emerged. "We recognize that we are currently a very 'white lady' organization," stated Avery, speaking to the group's current lack of diversity. "We realize we have a lot of work to do so that women of color can begin to feel comfortable with us and trust us. We want to be truly inclusive, and we are hoping to incorporate women of color at leadership levels. Until all women are represented, no women are represented." With goals like these, the GWR is aptly named. Enjoy this article? Send out a little cheer the year we all can use it most. As 2020 comes to a close, our current climate still keeps us at a distance from one another, leaving a gap FaceTime can’t quite fill. Now, with little other choice, we’ve become reliant on the technology we may have taken for granted or wanted a break from, and perhaps bringing back some nostalgia right in time for the holidays is just what we need.
There’s no better feeling of holiday cheer than opening up a holiday card, and our team at Printing by Penny Lane is here to help! We have an array of cards for the winter months, be it for holidays including Christmas, Hanukkah, or general greetings. Call us at 585.226.8111 for a custom design or order online at www.printingbypennylane.com!

Many students believe that the next natural step after graduating from high school is to go off to college. Secondary education has become such a common transition that many parents begin saving for college tuition as soon as their children are born. Although college can be the next chapter in a student’s education, many teenagers still choose to attend trade school. Television personality Mike Rowe says the country is in the midst of a skilled labor shortage because workers lack the necessary training to fill the hundreds of thousands of available jobs. Lack of information may drive the notion that trade jobs are nothing more than a backup plan if college doesn’t pan out. However, by realizing that trade jobs, along with short-term vocational training, is a smart investment - and eventually a lucrative career choice - attitudes about trade schools and laborintensive jobs may shift. A great number of college graduates enter the workforce with degrees that may not help them land jobs. And these students typically carry thousands of dollars in tuition debt. Many college grads are underemployed and working in jobs that aren’t even in their fields of study. Career and technical schools help students develop specialized skills that make graduates immediately marketable in their chosen fields, and trade salaries can be very competitive.

THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB Satisfaction: When attempting to achieve a better work/life balance, it can be easy to overlook satisfaction at work in exchange for more time at home. But studies have shown that feeling satisfied by what you do can have a profound impact on your overall happiness. It’s possible to find an engaging career that still affords you time away from work, and such a career can ultimately pave the way toward a happier life.

ASSESSOR
BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Eat a productivity-friendly lunch. If afternoons are when your productivity really starts to drop off, it might be time to reconsider what you eat for lunch. The body, which converts the foods we eat into glucose that energizes our brains and promotes alertness, processes different types of foods differently. So the food you eat for lunch may affect your energy levels for the rest of the day. For example, eating pasta provides a quick burst of energy because pasta releases glucose quickly. But that burst is often followed by a noticeable downturn in energy levels sparked by fading glucose levels that make it difficult for the brain to focus. In contrast, fruits and vegetables aid in the production of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that helps the brain stay motivated and engaged. Including some fruits and vegetables in your lunch or snacks may just lead to a more productive workday. EMPLOYMENT
