Water can improve the appearance of the skin. Skin that does not get enough water can turn dry and flaky and feel tight. In addition, dry skin is more likely to wrinkle than adequately hydrated skin. Getting water to the skin can be tricky, as the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health notes that water will reach all the other organs of the body before it reaches the skin. But the school recommends applying a hydrating moisturizer within two minutes of leaving the bath or shower and drinking at least eight glasses of water a day to ensure the skin is getting enough water.

When nurses go to work each day, many report to hospitals while others work at private practices. For others, a day at the office takes place at research labs. According to the online nursing resource Nurse.org, research nurses develop and implement studies to investigate and provide information on new medications, vaccinations and medical procedures. Research nurses, sometimes referred to as clinical nurse researchers or nurse researchers, typically have advanced degrees, and many first work as research assistants, clinical data collectors and/or clinical research monitors to gain some practical experience as they pursue or consider pursuing their degrees. Some research nurses even conduct independent research, though Nurse.org notes that such professionals need advanced degrees such as an MSN or Ph.D. to pursue such a path. More information about becoming a research nurse can be found at www.Nurse.org.

IMPROVE OVERALL ENDURANCE Pushing oneself physically can be exhausting and demanding. But whether you’re a seasoned athlete, a part-time fitness enthusiast or even someone who lives a largely sedentary lifestyle, you can find ways to dig down and improve your overall endurance. Many athletes find pushing their bodies past certain boundaries to be empowering. Letting complacency set in is easy, but finding the motivation to press on and push ahead takes mental determination.

HOMETOWN TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Fatal Episodes of VFib Require an AICD Implant ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m an 88-year-old female who has been diagnosed with ventricular fibrillation (VFib). My cardiac electrophysiologist, who implanted a conventional pacemaker four years ago, has noticed several episodes of VFib (up to 30 seconds, read via a bedside monitor). They recommend replacing the current pacemaker with a combo pacemaker and defibrillator. I wonder about the history/success of this device. -- C.R. ANSWER: Most people have heard about atrial fibrillation (AFib), which is a common, chaotic electrical condition of the top chambers of the heart. Without regular electrical input from the atria to the ventricles, the ventricles beat irregularly, but blood flow from the heart still remains adequate. By contrast, VFib is a chaotic movement of the lower chambers, and the heart does not pump blood during VFib. Within a short time, 10 to 30 seconds at most, the brain will not have enough oxygen to keep you conscious. Unless VFib is rapidly treated or stops by itself (which is rare, but happened to you), VFib is fatal. A survivor of VFib definitely benefits from an automatic implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (AICD). Nowadays, they also have the ability to act as a pacemaker; they recognize and immediately provide a shock during episodes of VFib. AICDs first became available when I was in medical school during the 1980s, but current models are a huge improvement since they are smaller and last longer. The evidence is strong that people at a high risk for a “malignant” arrythmia like VFib live longer with an AICD than those who are only treated with anti-arrhythmic drugs. The rate of sudden cardiac death is reduced by about 50%. You are very lucky and should get this recommended device as soon as possible. They are common and effective. ***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Penny Saver

Princess is a 16 year old maltese, she and her Christmas pal are watching for elves and Santa.

Should an owner punish puppy after accident? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I bought a puppy a few weeks ago who was between 2 to 3 months old. Star is wonderful, and housetraining has been OK. But yesterday, he pooed in the hallway while we were out. My boyfriend says I need to push his nose into the mess and punish him. I don’t think that’s the right way to train a puppy. What do you think? -- Daria in St. Louis, Missouri DEAR DARIA: Your instinct is spot on, and you should trust it more. That’s the wrong way to train a puppy. It’s aggressive, negative and doesn’t teach the puppy anything -- except to be afraid. Young puppies are learning machines, picking up habits quickly -- both good and bad. They need to be constantly supervised to keep them safe and to correct them (not punish them) on the spot so they learn what they can and can’t do in the household. When they’re not supervised, I recommend placing them in a properly sized kennel crate. Think of it as a den for your puppy, a safe spot. Again, not a place to punish him. Furthermore, puppies need to pee and poo more frequently than adult dogs -- about four times daily at Star’s age, but sometimes more. It’s up to you to make sure their elimination schedule is adequate and that you are there to supervise them. Star couldn’t wait for you to get home, so he went in the hallway. That’s on you, not on Star. Clean up the mess (spray with an odor eliminator) and continue your training schedu

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Doctors who perform laparoscopic surgery, which involves inserting a tiny camera into a patient’s body through a small incision, have better coordination if they play video games at least three hours per week. According to a 2003 study, gamer surgeons made 37% fewer errors and worked 27% faster than those whose only “video game” experience was the surgery itself.

Thanksgiving Dinner Thanks I wish to praise the fantastic job the Dansville Rotary Club did with their Thanksgiving Dinner Program! I was a happy recipient of one of their delicious dinners, and it REALLY was delicious! My dinner arrived nicely HOT and was arranged beautifully. You really made my day! Thank you all, and I hope your Thanksgiving Day was as special as mine! ~ A senior citizen in Dansville Tribute to a Kind Neighbor Today Donna Cochrane from Honeoye came to pick up items for a Sunday school service project a mutual friend is leading, and mentioned that a fall earlier in the day landed the lady at urgent care with broken bones in her hand. Donna had already picked up our friend’s prescriptions and was likely on her way to provide dinner as well. This kindness reminded me of the many times Donna has recognized and quietly provided for people in the community. After a long career in the classroom, she is especially attuned to helping children in need - and I only know of the few I have helped her accomplish. She is a shining example of living the Golden Rule, and I am blessed to call her my friend.

Business Attitudes I tried to purchase a product locally and have it installed. The item was not in stock and it would take a couple weeks to have them order my particular item. I went online and ordered it, and it came in 3 days. Went to have it installed for just an installation fee and got an attitude for not purchasing it from them. Waiting a couple weeks or taking a substitute was not what I wanted. My suggestion is to call them first of your intentions; if you get an attitude, go elsewhere. No one cares about us We senior citizens are lonesome and left alone. Holidays are very depressing. Some of us are handicap in nursing homes. In today’s society, our kids, family, and supposed friends always say, “If you need us, call.” Well, this isn’t the case. Some of us need outside help: leaves to rake, a quick roof job... I could go on and on. All of today’s generations don’t care. The generations have to remember we raised them, put them through college, but they don’t think of all this. Why can’t you help us? Remember, we are still alive. Wake up, children, someday you will regret this and say “I wish Mom and Dad were here.” Too late. People in today’s society need to wake up and help each other like in the olden days. Where did the good old days go besides down the tube? - Sincerely, Senior Citizens

Here’s a Tip Zip-top bags are essential when our family packs for holiday visiting. We use gallon-size bags for the kids’ outfits -- top, bottoms, underclothes, etc. -- and each bag holds one complete set. There is no suitcase chaos, as the bag comes out, and yesterday’s clothing goes in, ready for laundry day when we get home. Happy traveling. -- JoAnn After Christmas sales are a great time to buy not only gift wrap (look for solid colors that you can use all year long), holiday cards and decoration, but also next season’s winter wear. Things like scarves and gloves can be great bargains. And even coats can go on sale. Take advantage -- especially if you have kids -- and buy up. A great storage container for fancy ornaments is a liquor box, which you can get for free outside of package stores. They have cardboard separators that make it easy to store glass bulbs. -- W.F. in New Mexico (c) 2023 King Features Synd., Inc.

Donald E. Rauber November 8, 2023

Freda Yvonne Feely November 18, 2023

Wayland – Donald E. Rauber, 98 years of age, passed away Wednesday November 8, 2023 at his home in Wayland.

Freda Yvonne Feely (85) of Cohocton, passed away on Saturday, November 18, 2023 at Noyes Hospital in Dansville after a lengthy illness.

Don was born November 10, 1924 in Hornell, the son of Edwin and Helen (Ward) Rauber. He grew up in Hornell and graduated from Hornell High School in 1942. After graduation from high school, Don served his country in the United States Army from March 25, 1943 until his honorable discharge December 6, 1945. Serving during World War II, Don earned a Bronze Star Medal for his effort and in 2011, his grand-daughter escorted him on an Honor Flight Mission. After returning home from the war, Don went to college at Alfred State, attaining his Associates Degree in Business. He resided in Hornell during that time and when his parents moved to Wayland to own and operate a saw mill, he joined them. Don then began a career with the Wayland Post Office that lasted nearly 30 years. While working at the post office, he also owned and operated Rauber Realty, Inc. He also enjoyed buying houses, fixing them up, and then selling them. He enjoyed working and continued to do so well into his 80s.

Freda was born in Bath, NY on January 29, 1938, the daughter of L. Merlyn and Dorothy (Smith) Fox. She grew up on the family farm on Michigan Hollow Road in Avoca and graduated valedictorian of the Avoca Central School Class of 1956. She briefly attended Elmira College before transferring to Broome Technical Community College, where she obtained a degree in dental hygiene services. She began her career as a school hygienist in Addison, then worked alongside her husband, Dr. Francis Feely, at his dental practice in Avoca. When Freda and “Doc” amicably divorced, she began working at dental offices in Corning, as well as a number of school districts in the Steuben County area, providing dental hygiene interventions through a program funded via BOCES. Freda concluded her working career as a caseworker with the Steuben County Department of Social Services Foster Care and Adoption Unit. Freda was extremely devoted to her work and enjoyed these career fields, because they directly had a positive impact on young people and families in need.

Don and Betty Barber were loving companions for over 52 years. They loved to dance to the big band sound and spending time with friends. Don enjoyed puttering around, repurposing something old or found, and especially maintaining “The Hill!” Don was pre-deceased by his parents, Edwin and Helen Rauber; his daughter, Charlene Rauber; his brothers, Gerald Rauber and Leo Rauber; Betty’s sons, Gaylan Barber and Alan Barber; and an infant grandson, Christopher. Don is survived by his loving companion, Betty Barber of Wayland; his daughter, Donna Werth of Wayland; Betty’s children, Gary Barber of Wayland, Mike ( June) Barber of Wayland, Tom (Patty) Barber of Wayland and Paula Wheaton of Wayland; his granddaughter, Jill (Chris) Schubert of Canandaigua; his great grandsons, Owen and Wyatt Schubert; many grandchildren and great grandchildren on Betty’s side of the family; along with many nieces and nephews. Don’s family and friends may call Saturday November 18, 2023 from 1-3pm at St. George-Forsythe Funeral Home, 109 West Naples St., Wayland. Don’s funeral service will be immediately following at 3pm at the funeral home. Military honors will take place immediately following the service at the funeral home.

Freda was very civically active, having served as a committeewoman for the local Republican club, a dutiful election volunteer, campaigner and petition carrier for those seeking office. She was a long-serving member of the Cohocton Town and Village Planning Board and the Cohocton Public Library Board of Directors. Freda’s greatest joy was being a part of the lives of her children and grandchildren (and their friends), especially the years she was able to gather them around the dining room table for Sunday morning breakfast. Freda was predeceased by her parents, Merlyn and Dorothy; her exhusband, Doc Feely; her brothers, L. Stanley Fox, Roscoe Fox, and Lyle Fox; her niece, Millie Johnson; and dearest cousin, Carol Davis. She is survived by her sons, Walter (Wendy Heskell) of Cohocton; Jim (Heather) Feely of Wayland; her grandchildren, Francis, Bradley, Amanda, Emily, Ashley, Olivia, Amelia and Isabella Feely; her great-grandchildren, Walter and Michelle Feely, as well as several nieces and nephews. Freda’s family graciously requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be considered for the Cohocton Public Library at 8 Maple Avenue, Cohocton, NY 14826 or to the Cohocton Valley Ambulance at PO Box 262, Cohocton, NY 14826.

Things to think about while planning a eulogy * Some churches do not allow eulogies during a church service. Others permit a brief reflection before the service or at the end. If you want a eulogy to be part of a church service, discuss this with the minister. Ask when during the service it is preferred and if there are any guidelines or restrictions to be aware of. * Other appropriate times for a eulogy may be during an evening service, during a visitation or following the remembrance service at a luncheon or reception. * If there are to be any readings during the service, the eulogist should be informed. * If there is to be more than one eulogy given, review this with the minister and coordinate with each speaker. Each speaker should avoid similar stories and themes, and each should be brief. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Diane M. “Diner” Reimels November 25, 2023 Wayland – Diane M. “Diner” Reimels, 76, passed away peacefully Saturday morning, November 25, 2023, at Brookdale Fort Myers The Colony in Florida. Diane was born June 10, 1947 in Wayland where she grew up, the daughter of Lucian and Rita (Yohon) Hills. She was a proud graduate of St. Joseph’s Catholic School, Wayland Central School Class of ‘65 and attended the University of Miami. On August 19, 1967 Diane and Kenneth Reimels were married in St. Joseph’s Church, officiated by Rt. Rev. Monsignor Adelbert J. Schneider, and together celebrated over 56 years of marriage. She enjoyed life as a homemaker for her family; worked alongside her husband Ken managing their large and small animal Veterinary practice for 40 years supporting surrounding communities; she also worked with Ken on the potato farms they owned and operated for many years. Diane was a devout Catholic and communicant of St. Joseph’s Church; attended mass for most of her adult life; a past member of the Rosary Society; and recited the Rosary daily. Her dear childhood neighbor and friend for life, Paula Abraham introduced her to quilting which she enjoyed; and thank you to Jane McLaughlin, Diane’s best friend since first grade at St. Joseph’s School for her loving support. A voracious reader, Diane enjoyed the sun wintering in Florida, was an avid golfer, and lover of embroidering that included baby blankets for many of their clients, family and friends. She so enjoyed going with mother, Rita and Aunt Bernadine to the annual summer luncheon with their cousins the “Gessner” daughters, Mary Smith, Margaret Forsythe, Lee Morsch, and Alice Shaver. Above all else, she loved her family, and was a devoted wife, mother, daughter, and sister whose unconditional love and support will be deeply missed. Heaven has gained a beautiful Angel.

life, Kenneth Reimels; her children, Tammy Reimels of Perry, and Tony Reimels of Dansville; her sister, Mary (Mark) West of Honeoye, Anne (Hubert) Vogt of Wayland; nephews, Matthew (Katie Dokus) West, Thomas West and Ryan Vogt; grand-niece, Serena West, uncle, Robert (Barbara) Reimels; brother-in-law, Gordon (Donna) Reimels; many cousins, and countless dear friends including her beloved Class of ‘65. Her family is deeply grateful to the staff at Brookdale Fort Myers The Colony, Hope Hospice and Vitas Hospice for the loving, compassionate care shown to Diane and our family throughout her journey; heartfelt thank you to Robert and Barbara Reimels for their love and support as well. Diane’s family and friends called Sunday, December 3, 2023, from 1 pm - 4 pm at St. George-Forsythe Funeral Home, 109 West Naples St., Wayland. Diane’s Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated for her Monday, December 4, 2023, at 10am, at St. Joseph’s Church, 206 Fremont St., Wayland. Committal prayers and interment took place immediately following at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Wayland. Contributions in memory of Diane Reimels may be offered to: ARC GLOW, 18 Main St., Mt. Morris, NY 14510. Arcglow.org/donate-now or The Vincent House, PO Box 566, 310 Second, Avenue, Wayland, NY 14572. The next place that I go will be as peaceful and familiar as a sleepy summer Sunday and a sweet, untroubled mind... There is not a single thing I have collected in my life that I would ever want to bring except... the love of those who loved me, and the warmth of those who cared. The happiness and memories and magic that we shared. ~ Warren Hanson, The Next Place For online condolences and fond memories of Diane, please visit www.stgeorgefuneralhome.com

MAKE THE HOLIDAY SEASON MORE ECO-FRIENDLY

20 years of experience.

Create an eco-friendly party theme. Many holiday parties have themes. For example, “ugly sweater parties” have become so popular that many clothing manufacturers now intentionally produce colorful sweaters that might otherwise draw the ire of fashionistas. Hosts planning to throw an ugly sweater party can easily transform such festivities into something more eco-friendly by encouraging guests to purchase their sweaters from thrift stores. A Christmas tree planting party is another eco-friendly party theme that can benefit the planet and revitalize local forests at a time of year when they might be depleted due to the demand for natural Christmas trees.

Get necessary permits: Permits are designed to ensure the work is being done to code and in a safe manner. However, they are not without additional costs and processing time, and that can cause some homeowners to skip this step. According to the home information site The Spruce, building permits cost anywhere from $400 to about $2,200 for new home construction. Building permits for smaller projects can cost $100 or less, and typically are based on a percentage of the anticipated cost of the project. A permit may be issued the day the application is submitted, while other cities and towns may issue permits up to two or more weeks later. Factor permit fees and processing times into the renovation plan. If it comes to light a homeowner did work without a required permit, he or she may face penalties; may have to tear out work done to have it inspected or redone; some may be unable to sell a home until permits have been obtained and work has been done to code. Homeowners insurance coverage also may be affected if homeowners do not obtain the proper permits.

27 Years of Winter Magic: Dansville’s Annual Celebration of Community and Cheer S U B M I T T E D BY SA LO M E FA R R A RO, E V E N TS CO M M I T T E E CO C H AI R

D

ansville’s Winter in the Village started in 1996 by Alice Burdick and Susan DeMuth with the Dansville Business Association, assisted by Randy DeMuth, Dawn Didas, and Dorothy Hotchkiss in the early years. The original concept was to fill all store fronts on Main Street with community organizations, musicians, and vendors to create a vintage holiday feel in downtown Dansville. The ensuing community attendance generated hustle and bustle on Main Street and throughout downtown, akin to decades’ earlier experiences. Santa has played a pivotal role every year, visiting with children (now a staple at Dansville Public Library) and being the star of the parade, riding in one of our fire trucks. Vendors, school groups (particularly musical), and local organizations’ activities have always featured prominently. The entire event is by the community, for the community. More than 100 individuals, businesses and organizations currently participate. Attendance easily surpassed 1,000 people. The Dansville Chamber of Commerce became the organizing group after a few years. Its Events Committee takes the lead for the Santa Parade, Wine and Spirits Walk, ice sculptures, a window decorating contest (Congratulations to the 2023 window decorating contest winners in this year’s theme: The Twelve Days of Christmas! 1st Place - Marleen Mark, 2nd Place Mill Creek Optical, 3rd Place - R’Meraki Hair Salon, Honorable Mention - Empire Realty Group), and a costume contest (added in 2022), as well as vendors and nonprofits at the Town Hall, Genesee Community College, and outdoors throughout downtown. The committee gathers details from participants (much easier with technology today) and creates cohesive marketing for the event, notably Facebook and Instagram (Dansville’s Winter in the Village). The committee works closely and gratefully with local fire and police departments for safety considerations. The Lions Club Fantasy of Lights Christmas tree Costume contest winner - eight maids a extravaganza in Church Park milking; Photo credit Caleb J Miller was incorporated into Winter in the Village, becoming the end point for the Santa Parade. This allowed the parade to grow, notably with the help of parade coordinator Kaylee Walker Lohrmann. The 2023 parade included our High School Drum Line, K’s Canines on parade, WNY Side Saddle Group, floats, and our wonderful Dansville Ambulance and Fire Departments.

and organizations. This year, 18 sculptures were placed downtown (6 more than 2022), 12 of them carved in the 2023 theme: The Twelve Days of Christmas. Winter in the Village is always held on the first Saturday of December regardless of the weather! It is an all day, communitywide event, starting with the Jingle Bells 5K, school music groups at Star Theatre and ending with the Wine and Spirits Walk as well as free horse and wagon rides. People of all ages come together to celebrate a day filled with holiday happiness, fun, family, and friendship. 2023 marked the event’s 27th year, and co-chairs of the Events Committee, Julee Acomb and Salome Farraro, say Winter in the Village Ice carving demo finished; continues and improves photo credit Salome Farraro every year because the Dansville community values it. Thank you to the many people who step up and contribute in ways big and small. Susan DeMuth, owner of Dogwood Trading Company with her husband Randy, reflects that the children she saw at early events now attend Winter in the Village with children of their own.

Ice sculptures have been added in recent years, along with a live ice carving demo, organized by Lorri Welch. The popular sculptures are generously sponsored by businesses, individuals,

a festive table on a dime

YOU

C AN

DO

IT!

Presentation is king when it comes to setting a memorable holiday table, and it needn’t be daunting or expensive. Here are some essential tips that will garner rave reviews at your next gathering.

Mercury Glass It’s everywhere these days. From trees, to pumpkins, to candlestick holders, it’s timeless and transitions well from season to season.

Mix and Match Don’t be afraid to mix metallics. This gold flatware, purchased second-hand, is a standout.

Add Interest with Height A mix of faux and metallic pine trees give your table the height it needs. Be sure to place them strategically so your guests can easily see one another.

Start by scouring the house to see what you can mix and match to bring your table to life. Don’t be afraid to ask parents or grandparents for family heirlooms that they may be willing to part with. One of the best investments you can make is solid white porcelain dishes. You can get them for a steal at most places and they’ll take you through every season. For a fun twist, layer them with whimsical holiday plates. Solid red napkins add a pop of color, and when placed under the plates, there’s no need for a runner or placemat.

Be Resourceful Think outside the box. These heavy metal pinecones are confiscated from an old cuckoo clock. Add some freshly clipped greens and you’re good to go.

Wooden reindeer, real pinecones and mixed greenery take the textural feel to the next level. Snips of spruce or boxwood trees from the yard up the texture, and best of all are free. Details make all the difference. Adding personal placecards is a great touch that makes everyone feel special. How about adding a surprise lottery ticket to the bottom of a random plate? Sometimes a winner, and always a hit!

Experiment Pinterest is a great place to get ideas. Take a stab at different napkin folding techniques and see what suits your fancy.

Where to splurge This dining room table is a restored farmhouse table. It seats 22 people when all leaves are in. If you’re going to go all out, do it here and know that it will be enjoyed for generations to come.

HOLIDAY HOSTING IN SMALL SPACES Pare down the menu. Holiday feasts don’t have to resemble medieval banquets with excessive amounts of food and drink. Hosts with small kitchens and tiny dining quarters can pare down the menu, limiting offerings to just a single entree and a few simple side dishes, so everyone feels comfortable at the table and has ample room to eat. A small menu also gives hosts more time to spend with their loved ones during the festivities.

DANSVILLE-WAYLAND EDITION

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 8, 2023

To my dear clients, After a long and hard period of soul-searching, I have decided to sell my practice as I plan to retire from practicing veterinary medicine full-time. Know that I do so with mixed emotions. I am very excited to turn over my reign to the Malocos: Dr. Ami Maloco, her husband, Ruel Maloco, and their son, Noell Maloco. They are the new owners and managers of Canisteo Veterinary Hospital as of October 1, 2023. The Malocos currently own and operate Dansville Animal Hospital and Midtown Veterinary Hospital. Dr. Ami Maloco earned her education from Kansas University and Central Luzon State University. She had experience working as a critical care and regular veterinary technician for 8 years before becoming a veterinarian. Her areas of expertise include preventive medicine for small animals, dentistry, routine surgeries, and soft tissue surgeries. Her areas of interest include internal medicine and emergency care. Exceptional veterinary care is incredibly important to Dr. Maloco. She is committed to exemplifying professionalism in caring for her clients’ pets’ needs by providing incredible patient care and customer service. Communication and interaction play a pivotal role in her interactions with her clients. I will be staying on full-time until the end of 2024 to help with the smooth transition. My staff will continue to stay with the practice as they add new team members in the coming months. I will decide to stay in a part-time capacity towards the latter part of next year. It has been an honor and a pleasure to be a part of your lives for all these years. I wish your families, both two and four-legged members, all the best in health and happiness. My relationships with all my clients, patients, and co-workers are what have made this profession so special to me. I appreciate your loyalty throughout the years, and the memories of all that I have experienced over these past four decades will always be with me. Sincerely, Grant Seaman, D.V.M
