Active Living 50+ ____________________16 Refresh Your Home for Spring Get rid of grime A whole season’s worth of dirt and dust accumulates during the cold winter months. A deep clean inside and out can restore your home to its former glory. Inside, take time to launder all of your linens, including curtains, rugs and bedding. Move furniture to vacuum behind and below, and don’t overlook dust and dirt magnets like mirrors, light fixtures and the insides of cabinets, especially higher shelves that see infrequent use. Outdoors, hose off or power-wash surfaces like windows, siding, decks and concrete to restore a crisp, clean appearance.

Congratulations to our
Winner, Joanne Mistler The year is new, the Past is gone, the best is yet to come. Out with the old, out with the bad now a lesson to learn from... You can't change the past, you can't stop the rain, you can't bring back the words... So let us all learn from the makings of God... the flowers, the creeks and the birds.... When the sun shines above, the flowers will grow, and the birds will all sing, and the creeks will all flow... So my dear friends, let us all learn from this... enjoy all the things with such wonderful bliss.... Tomorrow's not given, Today is part gone, The darkness will follow.... But so will the dawn.....
Thank you to every one that submitted an entry! Over 100 entries were received!

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My neighbor’s dog, every day since I moved into this house in rural New York, has a habit of coming up to the property line when I go out to check on my garden. She will stand right at the edge, lift a paw, bark at me, then turn around and leave. What’s up with that behavior? -- Jim G., via email

DEAR JIM: That sounds like a well-behaved, well-trained dog. Or, your next-door neighbor has, or had, a low-power wire along the property edge that delivers a shock to a dog when it crosses the line. Whatever it is, she was trained not to cross into the neighbor’s yard. I like that you noted her body mannerisms. Raising a paw is a signal that she is alerted and checking you out. A nonaggressive bark is an attention signal. It’s something like, “I see you, and I want you to know that I’ve got my eye on you.” And her turning back after that bark is a good sign. She doesn’t see you as a threat. She’s said her piece, and now she’s off on her way. Being aware of a dog’s body language and barking is important even if you don’t own a dog. A bark followed by a growl (or vice versa) is a warning signal meaning “back off.” A raised paw and an intent stare at a specific object is typical of an alert and energetic but calm dog. A dog that charges and stops is being aggressive and there’s a good chance that behavior can escalate into an attack. If you get the opportunity to meet your neighbors, compliment them on their dog’s good behavior. Send your questions, comments or tips to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

Peripheral artery disease can be a warning sign of cardiovascular trouble. Altering one’s diet may help naturally prevent or treat this condition.
NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Fruit math: A tomato or an apple plus green bananas in a paper bag equals ripe bananas. * Empty tissue boxes have so many uses. Try lining one with a plastic grocery bag and keeping it in your car for stray trash. Or you can use it to corral all of those plastic grocery bags until you need them -- just stuff them in one at a time. Lastly, and probably my favorite: Cut out doors and windows to use as houses for kids’ toys. Imagination makes the possibilities endless. -- JoAnn
LITT LE T EET H
* “Jazz up your pancakes by adding pureed frozen blueberries or strawberries. It turns the mix either blue or red, and it’s fun for the kiddos.” -- V.R. in Florida * “We are always prompted to choose strong passwords, but a random collection of letters, numbers and special symbols can be hard to remember. I make a strong password by using a coded phrase, like “My three boys are No. 1,” which might be “MY3boysR#1.” Just thought I’d share my trick, but not my password!” -- R.W. in Iowa * Keep a bottle of club soda handy for spot stains on carpets or upholstery. It’s good for more than just drinks. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Childhood Vaccinations Still Mostly Effective --DEAR DR. ROACH: I am in my mid-50s and in good health (I don’t take any medications). I rarely get sick with colds or flu. I have been vaccinated with all the common vaccinations for our childhood. With all the immigrants coming into our country, I am wondering if any have been given childhood vaccinations in their countries. I fear that chickenpox, measles, etc., could re-enter this country. If so, do our childhood vaccinations still protect us from these diseases? Should seniors be re-vaccinated or is that harmful at our age? -- C.S. ANSWER: Legal immigrants into the U.S. are required to have all vaccinations as recommended by the Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices. Undocumented immigrants are more difficult to study, but what data there is suggests that vaccination rates are roughly the same in the countries of origin of many undocumented immigrants as in the United States. In fact, several Central American countries have higher vaccination rates than the U.S. currently. Analysis of outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases have suggested that most of these outbreaks have come from visitors (Americans or foreign visitors) from countries with high levels of ongoing transmission who spread the disease to others during their infectious period. Because there are some communities where there are enough unvaccinated people due to medical reasons, personal choice or ineffective vaccination to allow spread of the disease, there continues to be ongoing infection in the U.S. This is especially true of measles. People born before 1957 are generally considered to be immune to measles, and the vast majority have had chickenpox. People born between 1963 and 1967 (that might be you) are at risk for having had ineffective measles vaccination, and those at risk should check their immunization status and may need revaccination, especially those in an area near an outbreak.

LAKEVIEWCONSTRUCTION.NET FACTS ABOUT FEBRUARY Despite being the shortest month of the calendar year, February has an interesting history. Early calendars marked the start of the new year in March, but when the second king of Rome, Numa Pompilius, rose to the throne in 713 BC, he synchronized the calendar to the lunar year. That required the addition of January and February.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Another COVID Scam You know it’s getting bad when local police chiefs go on the nightly news to warn against scams. That’s what is happening in my area, and possibly in yours. Scammers are going all out to steal your information, money and identity, and they’re using the COVID vaccine as their tool. A few weeks ago, the scammers’ tactic was to claim we were eligible for a special COVID Medicare card. The card doesn’t exist. So many of us might have said that in response to the frequent phone calls that the scammers changed tactics. Now they claim to have an appointment for you to get the COVID vaccine. Here’s how it works: A scammer will claim to be calling from your doctor’s office, without actually naming the doctor. All they need from you, they say, is your Medicare card number and possibly your bank account or Social Security number “for identification.” Your best bet is to just hang up. But if you ask for the name of the doctor, they won’t know it. It’s the same with hospitals and clinics. If you’re not sure whether the call is fake, hang up and call your doctor, the hospital or clinic, and ask if they’ve tried to contact you. Scammers also are using different tactics: telling you they can fit you into a quick appointment, saying they’re from Medicare or your insurance provider, sending you an email that indicates you can get a fast appointment reservation by calling their special phone number, or offering you the vaccine at a “reduced cost” (the vaccines are free). Some of them actually offer to mail the vaccine to you. Don’t fall for any of these scams. If you need help signing up online for an appointment, call your doctor’s office or the senior center. Don’t give scammers any information, not even your name. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

INFLUENTIAL JAZZ MUSICIANS Miles Davis (1926-1991): Compared to other jazz legends, Illinois-born Miles Davis was introduced to music rather late. It wasn’t until Davis was 13 years old that his father introduced him to the trumpet, an introduction that would dramatically alter the course of jazz music. Under the tutelage of local music school director Elwood Buchanan, Davis learned to play the trumpet without vibrato, which Biography.com notes marked a departure from the style of trumpet-playing popular at the time. A true pioneer, Davis is considered one of the most influential figures in the history of jazz and 20th century music.

HOW TO COMBAT FOUR PET PEEVES AROUND THE HOUSE (NAPSI)—If your family is like most, there are a few things about your home that really annoy you. Fortunately, ingenious solutions are available for four of the most common pet peeves when it comes to lighting and electronics:
Magic Maze LITERARY GENRES
1. Never Enough Outlets: The average family charges up to 12 devices a day. With connectivity more prevalent than ever, the demand for convenient charging options is at an all-time high. The adorne Pop-Out Outlet from Legrand features three standard receptacles for added power and can disappear into the wall when not in use. Plus, its tamper-resistant plugs will keep children safe. Now you can simultaneously charge phones, tablets and laptops with an outlet made to maximize charging needs. 2. Lights Carelessly Being Left On: Constantly reminding people to turn off the bedroom lights? You can install motion sensors that automatically turn lights on when someone enters the room and shut lights off when the room is no longer occupied. 3. Phone Charger Mysteriously Disappearing: Scouring your home for a phone charger can be a thing of the past when you replace standard outlets with an instant, cord- and clutter-free way to charge phones, such as the new-to-market Wireless Charger from the radiant Collection. 4. Lack of Light at Night: Make the walk to the bathroom or the nursery at night a little brighter by installing night lights in hallways, kitchens and children’s rooms. Some night lights even offer adjustable light levels or can convert to flashlights. Two attractive solutions can be found in the radiant and adorne Collections by Legrand. For a home with more traditional aesthetics, the radiant Collection offers a Night Light with Two Tamper-Resistant Outlets. It features five adjustable light levels and an optional louver for additional light-level control. For a more modern and design-savvy look, there’s the one from the adorne Collection. It provides a soft glow and with ambient light level sensors, so it’s visible only in dark spaces. A few simple switches around the house can help you have more control over your home’s lights and electronics. While you’re improving your place, you may care to consider adorne appbased lighting control options, designed to provide solutions that offer whole-house control with the touch of a button. Homeowners who have both Legrand smart lighting systems and Voice Control−enabled devices from Google or Amazon can now power and dim lights simply by saying phrases like “OK, Google, turn on the porch lights” and “Alexa, dim the living room to 50 percent” without needing to reach for a phone, tablet, or light switch. High Schools Sports Resume; Children to Benefit BY SCOTT WURTZEL
L
ocal high school sports are resuming; what do they need to do to stay open? Dr. Steven Schulz, a pediatric medical director for Rochester Regional Health, discussed the benefits of resuming these sports, and how to stay safe moving forward. February 1st was the first day local, high risk, high school sports being allowed to compete. During that day, Dr. Schulz answered multiple questions that pertained to the risks and benefits of student athletes being able to compete again. What are risks that come with lack of socialization? “We do know we are social beings, and socialization does benefit children,” Dr. Schulz stated. “Obviously, we have had our limitations with that because of Covid but there are smart and safe ways to allow that to resume, and we are definitely seeing concerns with mental health from kids who have been struggling, but these guidelines and updated recommendations reflect our improving rates of Covid in the region and the state.” What are mental and emotional benefits of resuming these sports? “Besides just the socialization and the positive self-esteem comes from doing well with sports, we all know with exercise we release endorphins that help our well-being,” says Dr. Schulz. “Hopefully kids will be sleeping better with some of those activities as well. We know from the physical side of things inactivity leads mostly to problems with obesity and bone density and all those sorts of things. We’ve seen weight increase throughout the pandemic, as folks have not been as active. Again, as this is all done safely, increasing physical activity and allow sports to resume can have a beneficial impact.” Dr. Schulz also explained that these benefits are possible because of how schools are handling safety. “We know the schools have been doing that safely: because they are using the screening protocols, because kids are staying home when they are sick, because kids are being identified quickly if they are not, because everyone is wearing masks, and following proper social distancing, making adjustments to classroom sizes and lunchroom sizes, and those kinds of things.”
“All sports are not the same in terms of risk, so that’s something else we definitely need to keep in mind,” Dr. Schulz pointed out. “The closer the contact, the more concern there is for potential spread of Covid. Indoors are of higher concern than outdoor activities. The more spectators, teammates, and people involved, the higher risk as well because the higher the chance any one person might be infected with Covid. There is definitely still risk there. There are new variants of the Covid virus out there in the community.”
Dr. Steven Schulz
Dr. Schulz followed it by saying, “With the precautions, the American Academy of Pediatrics has recently come out with updated guidelines on youth sports and the CDC has as well. One of the biggest things is that we are now recommending that all student athletes—with the exception of certain sports—wear a mask during competition.” Dr. Schulz went into further detail about minimizing risks. “During these competitions and during these practices, it’s really important that we limit who is there only to those who really need to be there, and that any kind of training that can be done without physical contact is ideal, and socially distanced as appropriate.” Spectators at these events also have rules to minimize risk. “There are regulations around spectators as well, limited to only two per athlete. The spectators should be masked, socially distanced, and staying home if they are not feeling well.”
We know that we can do this safely!
As for whether he has any advice for student athletes - Dr. Steven Schulz resuming sports, Dr. Schulz replied, “Some student athletes have been out of condition for a while. We can’t just jump in and expect you to do what you did a year or two ago, when you were training regularly.” He also mentioned, “There is going to be some buildup and it’s important to continue with stretching and following with coaches and trainers that are available to make sure you are doing everything in a safe way. Start small and build your stamina and endurance and your strength over time to prevent muscle injuries.”
With the effort the schools and students are putting in, there is data that reflects the reduced rates of COVID-19 in the area. “Schools have been successful in keeping Covid rates low,” Dr. Schulz says. “We recently just looked at the period from January 6th through the 22nd with the return of school, and the rate with orange zone testing in Monroe county schools was only 0.72%, compared to that of the population at 7.3%. We know that we can do this safely, and the hope now is that we can extend that to sports in addition to what the schools have been doing safely thus far.” What are risks that people should be aware of and how do they minimize those risks? As long as COVID-19 is still a factor, there are still risks to be on the lookout for when it comes to these high school sports.

In regard to student athletes who have gotten Covid after Dec 4th, Dr. Schulz explained they “should have an evaluation with their pediatrician or primary care physician to ensure that there are not any potential cardiac issues that would preclude them from returning to sports and that would prompt a more additional work up.” Dr. Schulz concluded, “It’s up to each person involved to do their part to maintain safety for everyone.”

s e v Ra Thank you for your kindness! Thank you to the man who paid for our order after we let him in line in front of us. This was in the drive thru at the Dunkin Doughnuts in Batavia. When he couldn’t, he’d left a note on the door to let us know he had it in case we came back after store after hours. When I called, he said he’d even meet us to return it if
we couldn’t get back before the store closed. We were so thankful for his kindness and helpfulness. This type of thing wouldn’t happen in a big box store.

TRY A TASTE OF HISPANIC HERITAGE (NAPSI)—National Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity to acknowledge the history, culture and contributions of the people of Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America, and Spain. One of the best ways to celebrate, many say, is with food. Making that easy is one restaurant chain that’s having a year-round love affair with Latin and Hispanic cuisine. Long known for its authentic Tex-Mex roots, Church’s Chicken®/Texas Chicken® has spent years championing the commemorative period—which runs from September15 to October 15th—on a global stage. The first Hispanic influence on the company’s menu was the jalapeño pepper—the very first side item ever offered at the restaurant chain. The peppers were added to the menu due to a San Antonio tradition of squeezing their juice over various foods to give them a south-of-theborder style “kick” of heat and spice. The restaurant’s sister brand, Texas Chicken, features the Mexicana Burger on menus worldwide. This tasty chicken burger is a fiesta of tastes and textures, with a juicy hand-battered chicken breast fillet that’s topped “taco style” with cheese, fresh lettuce, tomato, spicy mayo, crunchy tortilla chips and chopped onions.

Although marijuana and hemp come from the same cannabis family, the plants are completely different in function, cultivation and application. Hemp is grown specifically for agricultural purposes and has been used for hundreds of years in textiles, body care products, paper products, industrial products and building materials. Most importantly, hemp is nonpsychoactive and cannot get your pet high. Hemp has significant health benefits for pets. Hemp is high in fiber; a great source of plant-based protein; is rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids; and contains phytonutrients, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and 20 amino acids. Hemp Seed Oil and Hemp Seed Powder work synergistically with other active ingredients to help provide support for allergies, stress and anxiety, joints, aches and discomfort, the immune system, and overall health and wellness. CLEANING
Do home improvement projects now, before winter
Air Duct Cleaning
The to-do chores never seem to go away, which can make you want to leave the projects for another season. After all, the deck is going to be covered by snow all winter and the house can always be repainted in the spring. But taking care of these jobs now has benefits beyond just crossing them off of your to-do list. For homeowners in areas of the country that have harsh winter weather, refinishing the deck this fall will help protect it from the winter elements like sleet, snow and ice. For those who live in milder climates, refinishing the deck now means you’ll still get to enjoy the fruits of your labor into the cooler months - and get a jump on spring chores. In addition, having your deck and your house in the best condition going into the rough winter months means that you’ll minimize any damage that could be caused by harsh weather conditions. To get the maximum benefits out of your efforts, take the time to make any necessary repairs to your deck or siding before you start painting. This could include patching any imperfections in your siding and sanding away peeling paint. On the deck, replace warped boards and nail down loose ones. A good cleaning ensures that the surface is ready for stain or paint. Once you’re ready to paint, make sure you have the right tools for the job. It will make the task quicker and easier, and provide more professional-looking results. Paint brushes and rollers have their place as useful tools, but for making quick work of painting a house or finishing a deck, nothing beats a power paint sprayer. The beauty of outdoor painting is that a paint sprayer can be used to get the job done in a few easy strokes.

HOME IMPROVEMENT
PEST CONTROL CARE FOR TOOLS PROPERLY
Proudly served our country, now proud to serve you.
Nothing can be more frustrating than wanting to begin a project only to spend precious time looking for tools. Almost as important as the investment in tools is the investment in tool storage. Hardwood or metal tool chests feature various drawers and cabinets that can house tools of different sizes. By keeping tools in a chest, they’re easy to find and more likely to stay sharp and in good condition. Metal tools should be stored in a cool, dry area, as dust and moisture can cause rusting issues on metal tools. One way to alleviate rust is to spray metal tools with a product like WD-40 to serve as a moisture barrier, then store them in closed drawers or containers. All tools do not necessarily have to be stored in a garage or work shed. Many homeowners like to keep smaller tools in the house so that frequently used items are within reach. A hammer, wrench, pliers, and a few screwdrivers are handy tools to have around inside the house.

PREVENT DIY INJURIES Thousands of people try their hands at do-it-yourself home improvement projects every year. Whether working indoors or outdoors, wearing safety gear and exercising caution is a necessity when undertaking any home remodeling project. According to the Home Safety Council, one in five consumers will need medical attention this year as a result of home improvement projects. A 2013 survey by 3M TEKK Protection and the National Safety Council found that more than one-quarter of DIY home improvement projects ended with injuries to homeowners or someone else in the household. Falls from ladders, cuts from power tools and injuries from thrown debris account for many emergency room visits. Accidents involving chemicals and cleaning agents also can occur. Safety should be the utmost priority when renovating, and that means utilizing appropriate safety equipment. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Shane Paul Gascon February 13, 2021 Springwater, NY: On February 13, 2021 at age 51, after a long hard battle with his health Shane passed away peacefully with his wife and their children by his side. He is predeceased by his father, Ole Gascon. He is survived by his wife, Lisa Gascon of 32 years; his children, Colton (Charlea) Gascon of Cohocton, Caly ( Jeremiah) Bowen of Dansville; his two beloved grandchildren, Aiddan Gascon, his best buddy; and Aubrey Gascon, his Doo. His mother, Lois Gascon who he loved so very much. His siblings, Deborah Schoonover of Canaseraga, Susan (Larry) McKinney of Dansville, Marty (Daisy) Gascon of Fillmore, Teresa (Dana) Moore of Birdsall and Cory Gascon (Tara Lehman) of Canaseraga. Many nieces and nephews. Many dear friends who were like family, and many people who looked up to him as a father figure in their lives.
St. George - Forsythe Funeral Home and Monuments
Shane was born on September 23, 1969 in Canandaigua, New York. He was the fifth of six children to Ole and Lois Gascon. He resided in Springwater his whole life “up on the hill.” He had a heart so big and was such a giving selfless soul. He was a family man before anything else. He was so proud of the life that he and Lisa built together. Family meant the most to him, but his love for the outdoors was a close second. Shane was so full of life, always smiling, always laughing and cracking jokes. He touched everyone in such a positive way. Shane was a popular guy, his phone would ring countless times in a day. So many people looked up to him and leaned on him in good times and bad. He would get phone calls about big bucks and money fish, and many times phone calls from people asking advice on how to call in the stubborn turkey or what bait to use. He loved it; he loved being there for people. He had a love and passion for the outdoors. Every chance he got he was in the woods, on a lake, laying a trapline, treeing racoon with his hounds or standing in a stream. He instilled in his children and grandchildren the same love and respect for the outdoors. His favorite place to be was sitting up against a tree in the spring listening to the gobble of a big ol’ tom turkey getting closer and closer to him. Shane had a slight obsession with Skoal straight, chartreuse jigs, Canada Dry, lasagna, old westerns, Enticer Turkey calls, Escanaba in da moonlight, and his sister Debbie’s molasses cookies. He was a fighter, that’s for sure. He faced serious medical issues for years but stayed positive through it all, and never felt sorry for himself. He used to say “I wake up everyday with a smile on my face thankful to be alive.” He wasn’t ready to go, but his body was so tired. Shane would want every person who he has touched along his life’s journey to not be sad right now, but remember the good times. Look for him in the rivers and streams. Watch for him in the sunrise and the sunsets of each day because he will be there. He hasn’t gone far, he just went further into the woods. A Celebration of Life will be held at a date and time to be announced. Memorial contributions may be made to Hunt of a Lifetime Inc., P.O. Box 241, Harborcreek, PA 16421. To send a condolence or share a memory please visit: www.doughertyfuneralhomes.com (585) 346-5401

NOW’S THE TIME TO
TEACH AT-HOME NUTRITION With a lot of parents facing the challenge of keeping housebound kids happy and healthy, this is the perfect time to teach kids the basics of nutrition and eating right. (Family Features) HEALTHY SNACK TIME TASTE TESTS: Sometimes it feels like kids can snack all day long on easy-to-grab crackers, chips or cookies. Next time they reach into the snack pantry, try incorporating a taste test or food critic activity to encourage something different and more nutritious. PURPOSEFUL PLAYTIME: Many households have a play kitchen or some kind of play food. Use this as an opportunity to act out how to create a healthy kitchen with activities like making salad, setting the table, peeling bananas and washing dishes. This can help young children become more independent, learn what to expect and grow into little helpers at family mealtime. SENSORY ACTIVITY: One idea that can work for school and at home is making a sensory box. Simply place a fruit or two inside a tissue box and have children put their hands inside then try to guess which fruit it is by feeling it. Suggestions from Melanie Marcus, MA, RD, health and nutrition communications manager for Dole Food Company - www.dole.com
