TIPS TO HELP REALIZE YOUR GOALS THIS YEAR Make note of potential obstacles. Recognizing potential hurdles in advance of their appearance can help you overcome these obstacles and stay the course toward achieving your goals. For example, men and women hoping to lose weight can look ahead to occasions that might compromise their efforts, such as a loved one’s wedding or backyard barbecue. Recognizing these obstacles in advance gives people a chance to develop a plan to overcome them. In the weight loss example, men and women can choose vegetarian options from reception menus or resolve to avoid alcohol, which tends to be high in calories.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF HONEY

Despite being the shortest month of the calendar year, February has an interesting history. Early calendars marked the start of the new year in March, but when the second king of Rome, Numa Pompilius, rose to the throne in 713 BC, he synchronized the calendar to the lunar year. That required the addition of January and February.

Soothes sore throat: Taking a tablespoon of honey to relieve itchy, dry throats and coughs can be effective. In a study published in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, it was determined that honey could be just as effective at stemming cough as the popular medicine dextromethorphan.

HOW CHOCOLATE BECAME TIED TO VALENTINE’S DAY Milton Hershey dabbled in commercializing chocolate. Hershey began as a caramel maker, but experimented with covering the caramels in chocolate in 1894. Hershey would go on to develop one of the most successful brands of chocolate in the United States, which included the famous Hershey bar. In 1907, Hershey launched production of tear-drop shaped “kisses.” (The chocolates were given their unusual name because of the “smooching” noise made by the chocolate when being manufactured.) The kisses became wildly popular and made for affordable chocolate gifts on Valentine’s Day. Many other chocolate manufacturers soon began packaging their chocolates in special boxes for Valentine’s Day. Russell Stover and Whitmans are two such manufacturers who have long specialized in heart-shaped boxes or other decorative Valentine’s gifts.

Caledonia Library Renovations and Expansion Highlight Importance of Community Libraries BY AMANDA DUDEK

F

or centuries, libraries have long been regarded as bastions of learning and education, and the Caledonia Library, affectionally referred to as the “stone library,” is no exception. The Caledonia Library Association has been updating and renovating its existing building and is set to finish this first phase of its update and expansion plan this spring. These extensive and needful efforts, coupled with the nation’s current social atmosphere, have only served to highlight the importance of libraries in our modern world. The Caledonia Library, an historic site, was built around 1826 by General Gad Blakeslee, featuring load bearing stones from a local quarry. Throughout the years, the building housed a store, an apothecary, a bank, a post office, and gas company offices. In 1910, the Ladies Circulating Library purchased the residence, making use of the entire building around 1919. Always civic-minded, the community utilized the library for the Red Cross during WWI and WWII. As a structure nearly 200 years in age, the need for updates was pressing. One of the most essential updates was the asbestos removal and abatement. “The asbestos abatement was a lengthy project, and the library was closed for a significant period of time for safety,” said library board member, Dick Thomas. “This was a more complex situation than usual. For example, there was asbestos tape on the inside of ductwork which then had to be completely removed from the existing library because it could become a public health issue over time. We are very pleased that we took the extra time and money to completely remove all asbestos.” The abatement work resulted in new floors and carpets, as well. The library also updated and expanded its electrical system to respond to the increase in technology and electrical devices, hopefully eliminating computer cords run across high traffic areas and overloaded circuit breakers. The library’s back windows were replaced, and its pipes and fixtures were updated. New bathrooms, compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, are planned for the new addition. Its stone walls were re-pointed by a father-and-son masonry team to address crumbling mortar, ensuring integrity while keeping moisture and insects at bay.

The historic Caledonia Library “We are near completion of all our current renovation plans with the last significant project being to put on a new roof this spring,” shared Thomas. “The roof sealant was fixed already, removing sealant which had asbestos in it. The new roof will merge with the roof line of the planned addition.” This planned addition is, in fact, part of the Caledonia Library’s major expansion project which will add nearly 3,200 square feet, essentially tripling the library’s existing space. Planned additions to the existing library include a Community Room for library and public use, a new Children’s Room to promote literacy and fuel young imaginations, a New Library Space for growing resources, a Reading Room for quiet study, a West Room as a multipurpose space, and a Library Lounge featuring a fireplace for peaceful enjoyment. According to Mr. Thomas, the timing couldn’t be better. “Libraries are our centers of knowledge, the number one source of facts,” he reflected. “A modern library, such as the one we want to provide, will have online access and current, accurate reference material to help people make their own educated decisions in a time when there is so much

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Planned extension of the Caledonia Library misinformation, including material which is more opinion than fact. We are often led down different paths by what we see and hear through various media and from public figures.” The library’s commitment to presenting facts and guiding patrons to the most reliable information is one service Thomas finds invaluable. “I can’t think of another time in our nation’s history when libraries, which serve as the center of information and facts so people can make educated decisions, have been so important,” he said. “Access to such a resource is crucial.” “We are at a time in our nation’s history when it is so important to be educated on issues before we agree or disagree and become involved in the decision-making process,” he continued. “In a library, one can do one’s own research and come to his or her own conclusions. It is a place to find and share that information, rather than a place for debate. The modern library encourages people to get together and discuss ideas towards a common cause, promoting communication without aggression.” There are many additional benefits to expanding the Caledonia Library, as well. “This expansion will help us offer internet access to the over 25% of Caledonia residents who do not have it at home,” he said. “It will provide space for meetings, be a resource for local business owners and a centerpiece which attracts - Dick Thomas, visitors to our village. Patrons Caledonia Library will also be able to find practical resources, health facts as well Board Member as insurance forms, taxation information as well as forms for filing taxes, business insurance information as well as details about government regulation. This major expansion would help us become a resource for everyone down to the very last person.”

“The modern library encourages people to get together and discuss ideas towards a common cause, promoting communication without aggression.”

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m writing in regard to the article on the keyboard-loving cat. My cats often react as if they’re disturbed by many specific sounds: voices from my phone speaker, noise from the radio or iPad, or clicking from typing on the keyboard. My cats are uncomfortable and confused. I believe that the sounds are not pleasant to them. When they paw at the phone screen or at me, I think it’s an attempt to stop, control or try to understand these noises that are bothering them. I’ve found that if I wear earbuds when using my cellphone or iPad, my cats don’t react. I silenced the “clicky” sounds when writing a text message on my phone. When I need to type, I put the cats in another room with a tasty treat to hold them until I’m finished. Our kitties are trying to adjust to our lifestyle, with all the technology we use today, and much of it is antithetical to their way of being! We need to compromise a bit and make adjustments that help them to be more comfortable. Thank you for your informative column each week -- Patricia D.W., via email DEAR PATRICIA: What a great observation! Most of us think that when a cat walks across our keyboard, they are just seeking attention. But it may be something more. With their keen hearing, all that clickety-clacking may be driving them nuts -- and they’re jumping onto the keyboard to put a stop to it. Your solution speaks to the importance of observing our pets and their behavior to learn what is normal for them versus what makes them anxious or annoyed. Observation can give us the answer to many problem behaviors.

REDUCE YOUR RISK OF STROKE (NAPSI)—An estimated 2.7 million Americans are living with a condition that can lead to blood clots, stroke, heart failure and other heart-related complications. Fortunately, a leading health organization is working to help these individuals reduce their risk of developing such dangerous conditions. Atrial fibrillation (AFib) is defined as a quivering or irregular heartbeat. Often, strokes that occur for no known cause can be linked to AFib, which a person may not even be aware they have. The American Heart Association (AHA)—the world’s leading voluntary health organization dedicated to being a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives—wants all people living with AFib to understand how they can reduce their risk of cardiac complications. “AFib can have symptoms such as an irregular-feeling heartbeat, shortness of breath and light-headedness or it can have no symptoms at all. Even if you are not experiencing symptoms of AFib, your stroke risk is still increased five-fold,” says Patrick Ellinor, M.D., Ph.D., cardiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital. Health care providers score a patient’s risk of a stroke caused by AFib by taking into account such factors as age, sex, and pre-existing conditions including hypertension, diabetes, vascular disease, and prior stroke or ischemic attack. “If you suspect you have AFib, meet with your doctor. AFib can be managed, helping you avoid stroke and live a longer, healthier life,” adds Ellinor. The AHA offers a free online community for those diagnosed with AFib, My Afib Experience. The initiative was made possible by an educational grant from the Bristol Myers Squibb and Pfizer Alliance. To learn more, visit www.heart.org/afibawareness. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

irritable male syndrome, similar to PMS in women? If it is real, does it cycle yearly or monthly? My husband is negative and blames others for things at some times more than others. Also, is there a cure or ways to manage it? -- Anon. ANSWER: The term “irritable male syndrome” was coined in 2002 in a review of animal behavior, among male animals with a strictly seasonal breeding pattern. After mating season in these animals, testosterone levels drop markedly, and the animals exhibited symptoms of nervousness and irrationality. In humans, low testosterone has a set of common symptoms, including low libido and low overall energy. Loss of body hair and decreased muscle mass happen after prolonged time without testosterone. Psychiatric symptoms, such as depressed mood and anxiety, are less strongly tied to low testosterone levels. Most experts do not believe that the findings in animals are analogous to what healthy men experience. While it is possible that your husband has low testosterone, and that this level may be causing a degree of irritability, it is much more likely that his behavior has a different underlying cause than loss of testosterone. By contrast, premenstrual syndrome, where there are dramatic shifts in hormones, is clearly associated with mood swings, irritability, anxiety and depression. As the hormone changes are cyclical, so the symptoms are cyclical as well. No such cycles exist in men for testosterone. I have certainly known many irritable males, however, and anybody can be more irritable one day compared with another. I would note that, especially in men, irritability and being easily angered can be a sign of depression, among many other possibilities. ***

FEBRURARY 2021 “More Storytime Online and Family Stem Challenge”

“Library’s Current Hours”

Storytime Online will feature books by authors Mo Williams and Eric Carle, and the program just began on February 3rd. The accompanying craft bag is now available, and this story series continues through February 18.

The Library continues to monitor patron traffic. It’s open 10-5 on Monday through Friday with Saturday hours 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. when you can come early and beat the rush! And please, if you prefer Pick Up or Delivery service, call us anytime at 585-335-6720. We can guide you while you “browse” your choices online or let us do the browsing for you. We know there are many reasons you choose to distance and not visit our Library to check out the shelves yourself. We’re here to help you with services, whether you want to try electronic downloadables or simply need assistance searching for something new to read. Please DO call us!

Families and children are also encouraged to pick up the February “Family Stem Challenge” bag, with supplies, on Wednesday, February 10th. Ms. Mary Ellen’s “Challenge” will be live on Facebook on February 17, and is called “Mailbox for Cupid.” Can you design and build the BIGGEST mailbox? Ms. Mary Ellen provides suggestions for creating your mailbox. For more information, please call the Library at 585-335-6720. Ms. Mary Ellen will present NEW Virtual Events in March and early April—keep watch here and on the Library’s website www.dansvillelibrary.org and our Facebook Page.

“Used Cartridges, Cell Phones, Laptops” The Library is participating in a unique fundraiser led by “The Cartridge Guy.” Bring your old cartridges, cell phones & laptops to us, and drop them in the collection box near the front entrance. The Library receives cash or credits on supplies when you drop off used cartridges, etc. here. Unused cartridges have a higher collection value! These appear when anyone buys toner too far in advance, and a new printer arrives. Bring those too! Rick, “The Cartridge Guy,” stops periodically to collect and submit used items on our behalf. The library receives cash or credit on office supplies from Staples. It’s easy! For questions call us at 585-335-6720. Again we thank our community Business Partners: Dansville Water Systems; Keene Automotive; Rubicon Graphics; Amanda @ Atty. John Scura’s Office. Be Wise: Shop Local!

“Find the Snowmen on Dansville’s Main Street” Our Library is participating in Dansville’s First Friday Event this month! Beginning on February 5th, families have a chance to search for Snowmen along Main Street and in other businesses. Our Snowman is melting in the Library!! Can you find it before it disappears? For more information, stop in and join the search! Charts are available to help you locate the Dansville First Friday Snowmen, sponsored by the Dansville Chamber of Commerce. Program ends Feb. 14.

“Watch for the Next Story Stroll” Ms. Mary Ellen invites children and families to enjoy the next Story Stroll on the Library Lawn which is scheduled to appear on February 8th. The featured book will be, The Day It Rained Hearts by author Felicia Bond. You’ll want to help your children with the special activity: find the hearts! If you haven’t Strolled the Story, now is the time to come enjoy! Wear your boots! Some of the panels might be in the snow! Stop by soon!

“Miscellaneous” The Library will be closed on Monday, February 15, Presidents’ Day. It will reopen on Tuesday at 10 a.m.

THE BENEFITS OF PREPLANNING YOUR FUNERAL Preplanning ensures your wishes are honored. Men and women who formalize their funeral plans will ensure their wishes are honored. That can give men and women peace of mind and will provide peace of mind to the loved ones they leave behind, who can attend funeral services knowing those services are being conducted in adherence to their loved one’s wishes. Even men and women who discuss their wishes for their funerals with loved ones may not have those wishes honored if they are not put in writing.

Donna L. Hill (Barber) January 30, 2021 Springwater, NY: Donna passed unexpectedly on January 30, 2021 at age 61. She was born on April 28, 1959 in Dansville, NY to the late Kenneth and Thelma (Sparks) Barber. In addition to her parents Donna was also predeceased by her brother, Bruce Richardson. Donna enjoyed her life at their home in Springwater, NY where she could take care of her family and also where she could watch the herd of deer behind the house. She enjoyed spending time and being with her granddaughter Annalisa whom she often referred to as “Pinky.” Donna loved to listen to Country music both new and old. Her favorite time of year was in July when her & Rob would travel to Kentucky for the family reunion on his mother’s side of the family. They often spent a week visiting with family which was something she truly treasured. She loved the time she and Rob spent with friends at the Springwater American Legion over the years and often spoke of the years she spent chasing around her Dad, Ken, at the Conesus American Legion when she was younger. Both places held a special place in her heart. To Donna there was nothing better than her time she spent with those she loved!

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Save and thoroughly clean foam egg cartons for kids’ paint palettes. The wells keep colors contained, and the flat space on the lid side is great for resting brushes. They are easy to rinse off and just as easy to recycle if you are done with them. * To help insulate your home to prevent heat loss, build up a mound of snow about 3 feet high at the foundation. Snow is a terrific insulator! -- E.S. in Michigan * When topping a pie with meringue, make sure that it touches all the edges of the pie crust. Otherwise it will shrink.

* Wrinkled ribbons? You can use your curling iron or flat iron to give the satin a quick freshening up. * “You can use a little bit of cooking oil to remove the last bits of sticker adhesive from a glass picture frame. Remove as much of the paper sticker as possible, then dab the spot with oil on a paper towel. Rub off. When all the adhesive is removed, use glass cleaner.” -- R.H. in South Carolina * Got stale bread? If it’s not too stale, you can try to bring it back in the oven. Set on a low heat alongside -- but not in -- a pan with water. If it’s too far gone, you can always cut it up into cubes and make it croutons, or toast and grind into breadcrumbs. No waste! SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles New World, New Ways of Getting Things Done We’re in a whole new world now, and unfortunately it looks like it’s not returning to normal anytime soon. So many things have changed, and we need to make some adjustments to how we take care of ourselves. Timing: Whatever you need to do, do it earlier than you think you should. If you’re going to apply for Social Security, don’t wait until the last minute. Staffing might be lower than normal, with fewer workers to take up the slack. If you need an appointment, such as for an oil change for your car, do it sooner than you normally would, for the same reason. If you’ve been ordering groceries for pickup or delivery, you might notice a renewed slowdown in available time slots as stores, in many cases, have fewer clerks. Taking care of business: Even if you eligible to receive the COVID vaccine, don’t assume you can get one just by walking in. Make an appointment. Ask about parking and physical distancing. Although the shot is free to all Americans, bring your insurance card to help the provider pay for administering the vaccine. Be proactive: Do you know when your credit card expires? In the past you were likely sent a new one just before it expired, with instructions to cut up the old one. Now, with quite a few things slipping through the cracks, you might not notice your card has expired until you try to pay for a grocery order. Check your card and anything else with an expiration date, including the date of the tag renewal for your vehicle. (Note: I learned the hard way that my state is no longer sending out notices of tag expiration.)

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS Take more time off. According to the “State of American Vacation 2016” report from Project: Time Off, American workers failed to use 658 million vacation days in 2015. Vacation is not just a time to get away, but a valuable, effective way for workers to recharge. The APA notes that avoiding the negative effects of chronic stress and burnout requires workers to take time away to replenish and return to their pre-stress level of functioning. Taking time off to disconnect from work and avoid thinking about work can be just what workers need to overcome their work-related stress. And plenty of workers have the time to take off; they just need to take it.
