DEBUNKING MYTHS ABOUT IRISH CULTURE

* “Cut kitchen sponges into smaller pieces. They clean as well as a larger sponge, and you can dispose of the smaller pieces when they get yucky.” -- O.C. in Michigan

Ireland is a world economic power. Ireland is one of the richest nations in the European Union. The World Atlas ranks Ireland as the third richest country by GDP. Tourism and the beverage industry help solidify this ranking.

* Don’t forget to clean out your dryer’s lint trap regularly. It can get clogged up, and that can be a fire hazard. Set a reminder on your phone to vacuum it out once a month. * If you have high boots, you can use this trick to keep them looking good and upright in storage. Simply use 1-liter soda bottles. They can be empty, or you can poke some small holes around the bottom and add a little baking soda, which will keep the boots dry and odor free. * Ficus trees can remove up to 80% formaldehyde in the air. Other great indoor air-cleaning plants include peace lilies, ivies, spider plants and ferns. * “Have you overdyed your hair at home? Try washing your hair with a dandruff shampoo. You may have to repeat it, but dandruff shampoo can sometimes get the extra color out of your hair follicles. Make sure that you condition well afterward.” -- B.R. in Georgia

If you’re going to be hoisting pints on St. Patrick’s Day, hoist glasses of water throughout the day as well. The International Alliance for Responsible Drinking recommends drinking water while consuming alcohol. The IARD notes that alcohol acts as a diuretic. That means that when the body breaks down alcohol, it removes water from the blood through your urine. That can contribute to dehydration, creating some of the more unpleasant effects associated with being hungover. Drink some water with each alcoholic beverage you consume.

TUESDAY TH MARCH 16

In the upcoming election there are three candidates running for TWO trustee seats. During the Republican Caucus Mr. Perkins told his supporters to vote ONLY Perkins. How well did that work out for Mr. Perkins? He lost. Mike Nagle and Norm Zeh won the Republican Caucus. Now Mr. Perkins is running on other party lines and telling voters again to solely vote for him, depriving opponents of potential votes that community members have the right to make. There are two seats available- not one. Honesty and integrity go a long way. Vote for the two who are NOT trying to split the vote. Trying to entice bullet voting is morally wrong. (Bullet Voting: A tactic where a voter is entitled to vote for more than one candidate- but instead votes for only one; in hopes one less vote for the competition will ultimately boost chances of winning.) Trying to purposefully degrade an election and its processes for individual benefit really makes you question true motive and honor. The ultimate goal of this election is to become a valuable member of the village board, a group where teamwork is crucial. How a person displaying such tactics while campaigning could be expected to be a good choice for trustee escapes any reasonable explanation. Vote for the best interest of Dansville Nagle and Zeh. Your vote DOES matter in a small village and you CAN make a difference.

VOTE ZEH and NAGLE Paid for by friends of the candidates GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT ST. PATRICK’S DAY While New York and Boston host the largest St. Patrick’s Day parades in the United States, more than 100 parades are held in honor of St. Patrick throughout the country each year. For those who love a good parade but don’t have much time on their hands, the city of Hot Springs, Arkansas, is home to the world’s shortest St. Patrick’s Day parade. The parade takes place on the city’s Bridge Street, which measures just 98 feet in length. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Perhaps in part to its widespread use in St. Patrick’s Day decorations and imagery, the shamrock is widely considered the official symbol of Ireland. But while St. Patrick is believed to have used the shamrock to teach the Christian notion of the Holy Trinity, the clover was never an official symbol of Ireland. That designation is held by the harp, which has been featured on the coat of arms of Ireland for centuries. The harp also was adopted as the emblem of the Irish Free State when it separated from the United Kingdom in 1922.

Deep Vein Thrombosis Usually Due to Surgery ---

Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 47-year-old woman. Five years ago, I developed a blood clot in my left leg after fracturing my ankle and being immobilized for several months. I was put on a blood thinner, and my ankle healed. Recently that leg started swelling again, and I went for an ultrasound. I was told that I have a chronic DVT, but that I don’t need blood thinners. Why do I not need a blood thinner now when I did before? What does “chronic” mean? Why am I getting swelling again five years after the first clot? -- L.S.B. ANSWER: Blood clots can happen in veins or arteries, but the type that happen due to surgery and immobilization are almost always in the vein. That’s the “V” in “DVT,” which stands for “deep vein thrombosis.” A brand-new blood clot has a high risk of propagating further up the vein, and also of breaking off and traveling through the vein into the heart. Most often, the clot will go on into the lungs, then called a “pulmonary embolus.” But in the rare case, the clot can go through a patent foramen ovale, which is sometimes called a hole in the heart, and cause a stroke. Because of the risk of life-threatening complications, acute DVTs are treated with anticoagulants, such as warfarin (Coumadin) or apixaban (Eliquis). This stabilizes the clot, and after a week or two the risk of propagation or embolization becomes much lower. Most people are treated for at least three months for maximum benefit. Treatment does not dissolve the clot, and a follow-up ultrasound will detail changes that show the clot is no longer acute, hence “chronic.” The vein itself is scarred and damaged, and never returns to normal. “Chronic DVT” isn’t the best term, since it confuses many, both patients and physicians alike. I prefer scarred, and some experts use “chronic luminal changes” to differentiate it from an acute clot. Whatever it is called, it may still be symptomatic. Most people with a history of a large clot in one leg will notice that leg swells more than the other in heat or with a large salt load. Even so, anticoagulant treatment is neither necessary nor helpful. Effective treatment for swelling associated with previous DVT includes salt restriction, compression stockings and leg elevation several times during the day. People with more severe symptoms that do not respond to conservative management may benefit from more aggressive therapies, such as placement of a metal stent to let the blood flow better through the damaged area.

PAW’S CORNER

Page 20

Taking Your Dog for a Winter Hike DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I love hiking with my Border Collie mix, “Jess.” Even in the dead of winter, we are out in the snow. Jess carries her own supplies in saddlebags sized just for her. The problem is, my girlfriend keeps saying it’s dangerous for Jess to be out with me in the wintertime. That she could get hypothermia, or injure her paws on jagged ice and have to be carried out. I really have never had a problem. What’s your take? -– Tim Y., Manchester, New Hampshire DEAR TIM: Each dog is different, and a dog that is outdoors frequently can acclimate as the seasons change. It sounds like Jess is pretty well acclimated to the cold, and you probably keep a close eye on her while on the trail to make sure she’s not shivering or in distress. Hiking is an activity that keeps you both warm, even on snowy days. I do understand your girlfriend’s worries. Much bigger dogs than Jess have suffered hypothermia from spending just a few hours in the backyard, unsupervised. And that term, supervision, does make a difference. Assure your girlfriend that because Jess is with you on the trail, she is under your supervision at all times. If she does get chilly or injures a paw, you’ll know about it right away, and will make sure that Jess is safe and that she’s warm enough. Her saddlebags should carry food, a drinking bowl, a doggy sweater or emergency blanket, and a small first-aid kit to deal with scraped paws and splinters. My advice: Keep hiking and enjoy the time spent with Jess! Send your tips, comments and questions to ask@pawscorner. com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Here Are 2 New Scams to Watch Out For They never stop. Scammers are continually busy, and so must we be to stay one step ahead of them. Here are two more scams they’re trying to foist on us. If you’re still working and receive W-2 or 1099 forms, look them over very carefully. If it’s a 1099-G, that’s for unemployment benefits. Did you receive those benefits? If not, it means that a scammer has used your identity to collect benefits. Those 1099-G forms go to the IRS, and that income is taxable. Contact the unemployment office that issued the 1099-G and have them send a corrected form showing zero unemployment income. If you can’t get the corrected form in time, file your taxes without using that 1099-G dollar amount and enclose a note saying you didn’t receive unemployment benefits. The IRS is well aware of this problem. Then send for your credit report, check it and put a freeze on your credit. In another new scam, if you do an online search for a big box store and the first result on the list says “Ad” in front of the store name, don’t click it. This scam is especially sneaky because if you click on the “Ad” link, you’ll initially go to a page that looks very real. It isn’t. Clicking it will take you to a site that may freeze your screen ... and provide you a handy phone number to call to have the problem fixed. The person at the other end is a scammer who will ask for permission to access your computer remotely. If you allow it, he’ll put a bug in your computer that locks everything up, and you’ll have to pay to get it released. Instead of doing a search, type in the Internet address of the store you want (call them if you’re not sure what it is) and go directly there.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

Now widely depicted as tiny, bearded and mischievous men clad in coats and hats, leprechauns have been traced to ancient Ireland. The precise etymology of the word “leprechaun” is unknown, though many scholars believe the word we use today is derived from the old Irish “Lú Chorpain,” which means “small body.” Some scholars point to the 8th century word “luchorpán,” meaning “sprite” or “pygmy,” as the origins of the word leprechaun. Another word, “lubrican,” which first appeared in the English language in a 1604 play written by Thomas Middleton and Thomas Dekker, also has been linked to the modern word leprechaun.

DID YOU KNOW? Saint Patrick may have not been Irish, but millions of other people are. According to the travel resource WalletHub and the most recent U.S. Census Bureau data, 33.3 million people in the United States claim Irish ancestry. That’s around seven times greater than the entire population of Ireland. The first St. Patrick’s Day parade took place in Boston in 1737, and New York City’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade is perhaps the largest and best-known parade for Saint Patrick. What’s more, Saint Patrick’s given name wasn’t Patrick. His “real” (Brythonic) name was Maewyn Succat, according to Irish legend. But Maewyn Succat Day just doesn’t have the same ring to it as St. Patrick’s Day.

Spread Your Wings with Positive Things - a LIVES Book Project BY MAGGIE FITZGIBBON "I felt good reading the book that my class made for the kids. The students' responses were great; they all loved the book. I really enjoyed working with all the younger students in the elementary school," Kailin said. "My favorite part about being in a class was working with the younger students." "Kailin's reaction was great, she was so pleased to share this book with the first graders. Our class was able to watch via Zoom as she read the book," Schnitter said.

Kailin Footer (center) with Sarah Wilcox’s first grade class at Geneseo Elementary School.

W

hen an idea becomes a reality, it's a win-win! A recent project came about when Marcy Wolcott, LIVES Teaching Assistant, shared an idea for LIVES students to compose and illustrate a book that would feature elementary students. LIVES student Kailin Footer had been interning in Sarah Wilcox's first-grade classroom at Geneseo Elementary School for several months, and when both were approached with the idea, everyone knew it would be welcomed from cover to cover.

Wilcox commented on how the book was received by the students. "Without planning it, some of the animals that the LIVES students picked to write about are some of our favorite classroom animals. When Jack’s name came up in the book as a flamingo it was a fun coincidence. After the story was over, everyone agreed Jack had to wear Pinky (the flamingo) and take a picture with Miss Kailin and the book," Wilcox shared. "Every page she turned had the students hanging on to find out which student would be featured. Even after their names had been read they were just as excited to hear their classmates' names." The LIVES Program incorporates a college course schedule, with student internships, employment training and readiness, and community service opportunities. Kailin's internship in Wilcox's classroom was an example of work experience as both the first-graders and Kailin were the true benefactors.

The LIVES (Learn Independence, Vocational and Educational Skills) Program is a four-year transitional program located on the campus of the State University of New York College at Geneseo in collaboration with the Genesee Valley BOCES. Students, ages 18-21, with intellectual and/or other developmental disabilities, are provided with an inclusive educational community. Due to the pandemic, this school year, this program is set on the Genesee Community College Campus, located in Dansville, New York.

"The first month of school is built around creating a classroom community and building trust - it’s something we as teachers work at every day. Kailin came into our classroom and gained the studentsí trust so quickly and I think it really speaks to her ability to connect with others," Wilcox said.

"We thought this might be a good idea to present to the class and believed that this would be a great way for our class to connect with these first graders. It was a fun project," said John Schnitter, LIVES Instructor.

Schnitter echoed Wilcox's thoughts and also shared how cooperative learning opportunities like these have cumulative effects.

In December 2020, LIVES students began the process of writing the book and creating artwork to correspond with each page. The title of the book is "Spread Your Wings with Positive Things." Each student in Wilcox's class is featured in the book as a different character, some type of animal that has wings, which includes birds, bugs, and flying fish. LIVES students illustrated the book and also wrote the text that corresponds with each drawing.

"Last school year before the pandemic hit, the LIVES students were able to visit classrooms at Geneseo Elementary and read books to small groups of these young students. This laid the groundwork for Kailin's internship. Our LIVES students learned much from this project; how to inspire and bring joy to others," Schnitter said. "It was very meaningful to our LIVES students, and especially Kailin, to witness the students' reactions to the book."

This project took several weeks to create and some LIVES students crafted multiple pages. They sketched out their concept, added some color, and drafted their text. Wolcott typed up the manuscript. LIVES students crafted their pages which were then bound into a book.

The LIVES (Learn Independence, Vocational and Educational Skills) Program is a program of the Genesee Valley BOCES. GV BOCES operates as a Board of Cooperative Educational Services offering shared programs and services to 22 component school districts located in Genesee, Wyoming, Livingston and Steuben counties in New York state.

Wilcox shared how Kailin assisted with the first-grade students. "Kailin volunteered in our classroom for approximately 10 weeks. She took on the role as an aide to me and was a support person for students. She practiced sight words, read books, and helped students cut and glue projects related to reading and phonics. She would mostly work one-onone with students," Wilcox said. Once the book was completed, Kailin made a surprise presentation to the class. "The students knew that we had planned a celebration for Kailin as a thank you for her help. The morning of the presentation, I let students know what was going to be happening, both the students attending school in-person and the remote learners," Wilcox shared. Excitement filled the air in the classroom as Kailin read the book to the in-person and remote first graders. Students waited for her to read each page as they listened for their name to be read.

St. Patrick’s Day celebrants who are not of Irish descent and/or those who have never visited Ireland may not know it, but the live music they may hear when entering a pub on St. Patrick’s Day is an integral part of the fabric of Irish culture. An Irish Seisiún typically finds a group of musicians gathered in a pub to play traditional Irish music, oftentimes while seated at a table among their audience. While many pubs reserve stage areas for their musicians on St. Patrick’s Day, the spirit of seisiún is still present, as musicians often interact with the audience.

SIGHTS, SOUNDS AND SYMBOLS OF ST. PATRICK’S DAY The color green is everywhere come St. Patrick’s Day, but celebrants may be surprised to learn that blue is the color that was once most affiliated with St. Patrick himself. Numerous paintings depict St. Patrick wearing blue vestments. But green is the color now most instantly associated with Ireland, which is widely referred to as the “Emerald Isle.” Ireland’s lush countryside and rolling green hills attract millions of visitors each year. The color green can be found just about everywhere on St. Patrick’s Day, even if Patrick himself was partial to blue. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT ST. PATRICK’S DAY While corned beef has become synonymous with St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in the United States, the corned beef eaten in the United States is not the corned beef familiar to people in Ireland. That’s because the corned beef eaten in the U.S. is largely from kosher Jewish butchers, whose corned beef is made from brisket, a tougher cut of meat taken from the front of the animal, whereas the corned beef produced in Ireland comes from the hindquarter.

(585) 728-2100 WHY DOES THE WORLD CELEBRATE ST. PATRICK’S DAY? March 17 is a special day for people of Irish heritage and other celebrants across the globe. Each year, millions of people pay homage to St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, with parades, parties and religious services. Celebrations occur even though many celebrants may know little about this legendary saint. Although St. Patrick’s Day has evolved into a festivity filled with clovers, frosty mugs of beer, green clothing, and lively music, the day was once a religious feast day honoring the man many credit with bringing Christianity to Ireland. St. Patrick was born in Britain circa AD 387. Many are surprised to learn he was not Irish. In fact, St. Patrick first spent time in Ireland when he was captured by Irish pagans as a teen and taken to their country as a slave. After six years working as a shepherd, Patrick became familiar with the customs and spirit of the Irish and “found God.” He was able to eventually escape his imprisonment, vowing to one day return to Ireland as a free man. Patrick was schooled at monasteries and was ordained a priest and later became a bishop. Under Pope Celestine I, he was commissioned to become an apostle to Ireland and spread the news of God and Christianity. St. Patrick spent many years evangelizing in the northern half of Ireland and converted thousands of people from paganism to Christianity. According to legend, St. Patrick used the three-leaf clover to explain the Holy Trinity to the Irish. Patrick’s efforts to drive out the pagans became an allegory in which he drove “snakes” out of Ireland. Although green has become the primary color of St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, and green remains widely associated with Ireland, during the 18th century, the Order of St. Patrick, an Anglo-Irish chivalric order, adopted blue as it’s official color. That led to blue being associated with St. Patrick. However, “wearing of the green” eventually fell back into favor, and the color green and an association with St. Patrick’s Day grew during the 19th and 20th centuries. Although St. Patrick’s Day originated as a religious celebration in honor of a man who brought Christianity to Ireland, it has since become a larger representation of Irish pride and culture.

Gretchen was born March 11, 1927 in East Springwater, a daughter of Mark and Hazel (Pardee) Richards. She was a former Title Clerk at Roberts Chrysler Plymouth in Honeoye Falls and Bookkeeper for the family farms. She was the loving widow of Charles H. Gray. She and Charlie lived in Prattsburgh when they were first married, then they moved to Scottsville where they spent 22 years working the farm on Scottsville-Mumford Rd and enjoying the community where their daughters attended Caledonia-Mumford Central School. Barn dances, homecoming floats, snowmobiling and summers on Canandaigua Lake were all memories filled with joy and laughter. Gretchen was a sweet, fun and adventurous lady. When Charlie bought a motorcycle she rode once or twice on the back with him and knew quickly that being a passenger was not her place and she wanted her own. At age 50 she learned to ride a motorcycle and joined the Motor Maids Cycling Club. Long after Charlie quit riding she continued and was attending all-women cycling conventions and donning uniforms to ride in parades across the Northeast and Canada. She loved the outdoors, gardening and could drive tractors with the best of them. She was known for leveling the pit silo at harvest time each fall, a job that scared many men. She was also known for her beautiful wedding cakes. Gretchen and Charlie retired in 1985 and moved back to Prattsburgh where they purchased the farm on Armstrong Rd and thrived there for 31 years. She kept busy and in many ways caught her stride during retirement as she was a member of the Prattsburgh United Methodist Church and the Gu-Ya-No-Ga chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Gretchen also volunteered for Prattsburgh Historical Society, Steuben County Senior Services and Food Kitchen. She loved spending time taking care of flowers and mowing the lawn on the farm. She was caring, considerate and loved by all who knew her. She handled the struggles given to her in life with grace and dignity. Her courage and resilience was remarkable. She was a wonderful mother, wife, sister, grandmother and friend. She asked for very little and was so easy to love. She lived through the Great Depression and a global pandemic. She was proof that they make farm girls tough. In addition to her parents and husband, Gretchen is also predeceased by her sister, Martha (Ray) Fisher; and brothers, Robert and Marcus Richards. Gretchen is survived by her children, Linda (Steve) Ludlum and Carol (Deb) Gray; grandchildren, Kelly (Ryan) Cooke, Shannon (Nikko) Fenderson, Niki (Ian) Schlegel; Alek ( Jenna) Rencis and Colin (Svetlana) Ludlum; great-grandchildren, Hudson, Miles and Fiona Schlegel; brother and sister-in-law, Calvin (Marty) Richards; sisters-in-law, Pauline Richards, Mary (Forrest) Dye, Beverly Sick, Margaret Gray and Shirley Gray; along with many nieces, nephews, special friends and neighbors. The family will hold a private ceremony and burial in Clearview Cemetery, N. Cohocton. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Focus on the Children (www.focuschild.org) and Hillside (www.hillside.com). Services are being provided by the Walter E. CORNED BEEF & CABBAGE FOR ST. PATTY’S DAY Corned beef and cabbage might not be a part of many people’s diet regimens throughout the year. But come March 17, it’s not uncommon to find people from all walks of life indulging in this beloved meal.

Contact: Nutrien Ag Solutions @ 585-384-5221 or e-mail resume: Rob.Curtin@nutrien.com

March 17 marks the celebration of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. Over the years, the day has also become a celebration of the Emerald Isle. Such celebrations tend to feature corned beef and cabbage, even though the dish may have little to do with Ireland (and even less to do with St. Patrick). The precise origins of the link between corned beef and St. Patrick’s Day remain a topic of debate, but some historians say the corned beef enjoyed today can be traced to New York City’s Irish immigrant population in the 19th and 20th centuries, who popularized a salted meat made from brisket that was then sold by Jewish butchers. Regardless of the authenticity of its link to Ireland, corned beef is delicious and many modern Paddy’s Day celebrants wouldn’t think of going without it on March 17.

SIGHTS, SOUNDS AND SYMBOLS OF ST. PATRICK’S DAY Many establishments display the familiar Irish tricolour flag on St. Patrick’s Day, and paradegoers may even wave miniature versions of this significant symbol in support of those marching. This instantly recognizable flag has a rich history. Equal parts green, white and orange, the flag was designed to foster peace in the country that had experienced considerable turmoil due to the divide between the country’s Protestant and Catholic residents. The green in the flag represents the Irish Catholics, while the orange represents the Irish Protestants. The white is a symbol of hope for peace between the two factions. Though Ireland established the tricolour as its national flag in 1921, it first appeared much earlier when Irish national Thomas Francis Meagher unfurled it in 1848.

DEBUNKING MYTHS ABOUT IRISH CULTURE The Irish are not enamored with leprechauns. Come St. Patrick’s Day, leprechauns are purported to be mischief makers who can rev-up the fun. But within Ireland, the only places you’re liable to find leprechauns is in tourist gift shops. In fact, while the origins of leprechauns may date back to ancient Ireland, many people now believe the image of the fighting, illtempered leprechaun is offensive to the Irish people.
