who makes frequent visits to the bathroom to urinate. I am in good health and I wonder what causes this. Where does all that liquid come from? -- A.R.N. ANSWER: What goes in must come out. All the liquid you urinate came from fluid you consumed when drinking and eating food. But it may be more about perception than volume. Frequent urination is extremely common in both men and women, and although some causes are the same, such as an overactive bladder, men have an additional anatomical structure that can lead to urinary problems as they get older: the prostate, a normally walnut-sized gland that may increase in size as men age. It is through the prostate that the urethra, and thus all the urine, has to flow. If the prostate is enlarged, the urinary flow slows down. As the prostate obstruction becomes worse, men may have trouble emptying the bladder completely. This has the effect of making men go to the bathroom more frequently, since the bladder has less functional size. In this case, you aren’t urinating any more volume than before, just more often in smaller amounts. Treatment needs to be directed at the underlying cause. Overactive bladder and enlarged prostate have similar symptoms and different treatments. It is possible that you really are having excess volume, however. Diabetes is the biggest concern here, and you should be tested if you have truly large volumes of urine.

LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY Dining out is a great way to celebrate life’s milestones or simply reconnect with friends and loved ones. Research firm NPD Group found that, by the end of 2015, restaurant visits by consumers increased by 700 million compared to just five years prior. While chain restaurants invest heavily in advertising, independently owned restaurants do not have those same resources. Multi-unit chains also have more pull with suppliers and might be able to negotiate better deals, or can spread operational costs across various locations. Too often diners are not aware of the vast array of tasty, well-priced and artisanal foods awaiting them just down the street. Much can be said about the advantages of patronizing local eateries. Men and women who want unique dining experiences can give local, independently owned establishments a try.

Avocados contain lutein and zeaxanthin, a pair phytochemicals concentrated in the tissues in the eyes. Lutein and zeaxanthin are believed to block blue light from reaching structures in the retina, thereby reducing a person’s risk of developing macular degeneration. In fact, studies published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, the American Journal of Ophthalmology and The Archives of Ophthalmology found that diets high in lutein and zeaxanthin are associated with a lower risk of macular degeneration, which the American Macular Degeneration Foundation notes is the leading cause of vision loss in the United States.

GOOD FRIDAY Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Jesus was condemned by his peers as King Herod and Pontius Pilate had found him not guilty of his crimes. But crowds were enraged, and Pilate reluctantly ordered his crucifixion rather than face a mass riot.

On what is now called “Palm Sunday,” Jesus Christ rode a donkey into Jerusalem while villagers welcomed him and waved palm branches. This is mentioned in each of the Biblical Gospels and occurs a week before His subsequent resurrection. Jesus possibly rode a donkey rather than a horse as a sign of peace, as a war-waging king might ride a horse. The “Passion of the Christ” is typically read during Palm Sunday masses.

FRESHEN UP YOUR HOM E FOR THE SPRING SEASON Give rugs and floors a deep cleaning. Recirculated air may be full of dust and other microscopic particles that end up blow ing throughout your home. Also, it’s easy to track in dirt and other materials on your shoes that become imbedded in carpeting. At least once a year, rent or enlist the surfaces of carpet and upholstery cleaners to give floors a thorough cleaning. You may be surprised at how clean and fresh a home looks and smells once rugs and carpets are deep-cleaned. You also can make a dry carpet cleaner using baking soda, corn starch and desired fresh herbs for fragrance. Sprinkle and then vacuum up after a few hours. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Penny Saver ASAP robots: Dansville Central School fifth graders accepted the challenge to program the Lego EV3 robots they built to race around a pylon and back again, the winner being the robot with the fastest time.
S
tudents in grades PreK-7 participating in the ASAP program at Dansville Central School have been building and coding robots. This introduction to coding is being offered by the GV BOCES Enrichment Department. All students use robots and coding platforms that are age specific. The youngest students, in pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, and first grade, learned the basics by programming Cubetto robots. Grades 2-4 built and programmed Lego WeDo robots, and grades 5-7 used Lego EV3 robots. The Lego robots use a block coding system that students use to have their robot perform specific tasks. As a finale, a Robot Olympics is planned for students to compete in challenges that will test their coding ability. Students learned that coding is a language and way of thinking. Successful coding involves the use of iterative design and computational thinking. Because coding is an important skill in the modern workplace, developing these skills and ways of thinking can open doors for students in the future.
Hi. Our names are Dodger and Sprout. Mommy calls me Sprouty. We will turn 6 years old in July. Our sister Dewey lives in Cheektowaga, NY with Mommy’s human daughter. We see her all the time. We moved to S. Bristol in April 2020. This town is beautiful, and everyone has been so nice to us. We love taking walks in Ontario Co Park. Our favorite dinner is plain baked chicken with carrots and peas. Once in a while we get a little piece of pepperoni. If we’re really good.
The GV BOCES Enrichment Department has brought a variety of STEM, arts, and literacy activities for the Dansville Central Schools’ Academic Support and Activities Program (ASAP). The engaging and creative units are offered weekly by GV BOCES Enrichment Specialists. Dansville’s ASAP provides assistance to children in grades PK through 7 and offers activities to promote creativity and exercise, in a safe and healthy environment, on days that they are not attending school.
Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.
SPRING CLEANING PROJECTS YOU DON’T WANT TO FORGET BASEBOARDS: Though baseboards might not seem all that dirty, upon c loser inspec tion homeow ners might notic e substantial ac c umulations of dirt and dust. Suc h dirt and dust many not be removed so easily, so homeow ners might need to use hot w ater and a sponge to remove any debris that is c linging.
The Genesee Valley BOCES Enrichment Department is a service offered by Genesee Valley BOCES that provides over 20 programs including Enrichment, as well as Gifted and Talented programs, Arts-In-Education presentations, several competitions, and a Summer Institute program. GV BOCES operates as a Board of Cooperative Educational Services offering shared programs and services to 22 component school districts located in Genesee, Wyoming, Livingston and Steuben counties in New York state.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
A Runner’s Plea to Dog Owners DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I witnessed an incident on my morning run that illustrated the reason why dogs need to be on a leash at all times in residential areas. A runner ahead of me on the side of the road approached a dog owner and his Collie ambling along the sidewalk. The owner had unfastened the dog’s leash so that it could explore ahead. The dog seemed calm, but as the runner drew near to them, it suddenly bristled, snarled and then leaped at the runner. Before the owner could grab the dog’s collar, the runner was bitten on her cheek and hand. The injuries were serious enough to require stitches. There is no excuse for an owner to allow their dog off the leash except where it’s expressly permitted, such as dog parks. Even when an owner has trained their dog to respond to verbal commands, the command might not be given fast enough to stop the dog. Runners are attractive targets to many dogs. As we run past, a dog may take our movements as a signal to chase. I have two dogs myself. They’re both too old to run with me now, but in their younger days, I frequently took them with me -- both on a leash. They’ve always responded quickly to verbal commands, but I do not rely on those alone to keep them from darting into traffic or annoying other runners. Please tell your readers to keep the leashes on their dogs. It keeps others safe, it keeps the dogs safe, and it protects owners from legal issues. It’s also the law. -- Rick in Dracut, Massachusetts DEAR RICK: You told them, and I thank you. Readers, take heed and keep your dogs on a leash and under your control when outdoors. Ban dogs from parks Is banning dogs from parks what it is going to take to stop dog owners from leaving plastic bags of dog poop around the park? Dog owners, it is your job to remove your dog’s poop, not leave it in the park for other people. Banning dogs from parks may be the only solution to this problem! Now that spring is here and more people are walking their dogs, the plastic poop bags line the park walkways. It’s disgusting. Hunter entitlement Thanks to the neighboring hunter who entered my and my two neighbors’ properties last December to apparently trail an injured deer and placed 30+ pink plastic flags on the brush and trees throughout the properties and left them hanging there. You not only didn’t ask for permission, but worse you also felt entitled to leave them there for us to remove the flagging and pick up af-
ter you. No wonder hunters have trouble getting permission when finding private land to hunt on when those like you do not respect private property landowners. Disgusting language I know and understand the First Amendment: Freedom of Speech. I also understand that we have a choice of what kind of language to use. I live in a very small community. One resident in this community has chosen to use the most vulgar, obscene word in our language on a very large sign in his front yard to insult our President. Any child old enough to read can see this and decide it is all right to use that word. I wonder if he uses this word with his children and grandchildren? Can his parents be proud of that sign? I don’t know what he hopes to accomplish by doing this, but what he has accomplished is to show that he has no dignity or class. How sad!

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Senior Center Closed? Meet Up in Parking Lot Is your senior center still closed? Most of them are, which means that we haven’t experienced our typical routines for a very long time. Mostly it’s the social aspect we miss. A show of hands: How many of us, if given the opportunity, would show up at the senior center for an in-person gathering even if it was held outside? In the parking lot? It’s being done in some parts of the country, even in cold weather, so it’s possible if those who run your senior center are willing to do the work of spacing chairs 6 feet apart and making coffee in thermoses so it stays hot and pushing around a trolley of cookies. With spring officially here, chances are that if you and others approach the staff of the senior center to express interest, social gatherings like these could be made to happen. An hour once a week would go a long way toward reconnecting with friends and checking in with others to see -- in person -- how they’re really doing. Besides the loss of social interaction, it’s the classes many of us miss: budgeting for living on Social Security, cooking for one, journaling ... and especially the hands-on classes about electronic devices. Those device classes are the very classes we need now that could help us to interact with others on video calls. To their credit, some senior centers have figured out that, if nothing else, they can show video exercise classes we can follow from home. And many of them have stepped forward with volunteers who can help get us signed up online to get the COVID vaccine. From what I hear, though, it’s the in-person social interactions that we seniors miss the most. Even a once-a-week gathering, in a parking lot, would be very welcome. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

Three Ways to Avoid COVID-19 Vaccine Scams Start with your state or local health department to find out how, when, and where to get a COVID-19 vaccine in your community. And to avoid a scam, know that:
– PUDDING
• You can’t pay to put your name on a list to get the vaccine. That’s a scam. • You can’t pay to get early access to the vaccine. That’s a scam. • Nobody legit will call, text, or email about the vaccine and ask for your Social Security, bank account, or credit card number. That’s a scam.

People with multiple hobbies recognize there are many great ways to spend one’s time. But even people with plenty of ways to pass their time may find themselves wasting time each day, a phenomenon that seems to be growing. In its 2014 “Wasting Time at Work” survey, Salary.com found that 89 percent of participants acknowledged wasting time at work each day. That marked a sharp increase from a year prior, when 69 percent of workers surveyed reported wasting time at work. Thirty-one percent of workers surveyed admitted wasting roughly 30 minutes per day, while another 31 percent estimated they waste around one hour each day. Perhaps the most surprising finding from the survey was that 4 percent of participants admitted they waste four or more hours, or at least half a typically eight-hour workday, at work each day. Some people might be wasting time out of sheer boredom, but many may be able to trace all those squandered minutes and hours to inefficiency.

Many students believe that the next natural step after graduating from high school is to go off to college. Secondary education has become such a common transition that many parents begin saving for college tuition as soon as their children are born. Although college can be the next chapter in a student’s education, many teenagers still choose to attend trade school. Television personality Mike Rowe says the country is in the midst of a skilled labor shortage because workers lack the necessary training to fill the hundreds of thousands of available jobs. Lack of information may drive the notion that trade jobs are nothing more than a backup plan if college doesn’t pan out. However, by realizing that trade jobs, along with short-term vocational training, is a smart investment - and eventually a lucrative career choice - attitudes about trade schools and laborintensive jobs may shift. A great number of college graduates enter the workforce with degrees that may not help them land jobs. And these students typically carry thousands of dollars in tuition debt. Many college grads are underemployed and working in jobs that aren’t even in their fields of study. Career and technical schools help students develop specialized skills that make graduates immediately marketable in their chosen fields, and trade salaries can be very competitive.

BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Squeeze in a midday workout. Numerous studies have shown the many benefits to daily exercise, but professionals may not know that exercise can help improve their productivity at the office. A 2005 study from researchers at the then-named Leeds Metropolitan University in England asked 200 workers to answer questions regarding their productivity on days when they exercised at lunchtime and days when they did not exercise. Sixty percent said their job performance, including their ability to meet deadlines and manage their time, improved by a considerable amount on the days when they exercised.

FINDING WORK AFTER 50 Unemployment isn’t easy for anyone, regardless of their age. But unemployed men and women over 50 may find it especially difficult to find work. Whether it’s a byproduct of age-related discrimination or any of a host of additional variables, jobless older workers often struggle to find work. In a 2016 analysis of government figures, the Schwartz Center for Economic Policy Analysis at the New School estimated that the jobless rate for workers 55 and older in August of 2016, six years after the Great Recession, was nearly 9 percent. At the time, the national jobless rate hovered around 5 percent. Unemployed men and women over 50 who are struggling to find work can consider the following strategies as they look to rejoin the workforce. Revisit your résumé. Unemployed men and women over 50 have no doubt updated their résumés to reflect their most recent professional experience. But they may need to trim some of the fat in regard to their work life 10 or more years ago. Today’s hiring managers may only be concerned with recent experience that illustrates skillsets that are relevant to today’s jobs. Men and women over 50 may consider their experience from 20 years ago invaluable, but if that experience does not meet the specific needs of the jobs they’re now seeking, then they should remove it from their résumés so hiring managers can quickly access the more relevant information from their work histories. Embrace 21st century job hunting. Finding a job in the second decade of the 21st century is unlike job hunting in decades prior, and wholly different from how men and women over 50 looked for jobs upon beginning their professional lives. Networking can mean the difference between unemployment and landing a job. Go to job fairs attended by hiring managers and join professional organizations that host events where professionals in your field can gather. Turn your age into a positive. Men and women over 50 should accept the likelihood that their new managers and/or hiring managers will be younger than them. When interviewing for a job, men and women over 50 should make an effort to showcase their enthusiasm about working with and learning from younger colleagues, while also noting their desire to commit long-term to a company. Some hiring managers may surprise older applicants, viewing them as potentially more reliable than younger workers simply looking to gain some experience in a particular industry before moving on to the next opportunity. Make use of your existing down time. Another strategy unemployed men and women over 50 can try as they look for work is to make better use of their existing downtime. Enrolling in online courses can give prospective employers the impression that applicants over 50 are both tech-savvy and willing to learn new things. Each of those things can help men and women over 50 overcome any unjustified, tech-related stigmas that hiring managers may attach to older job candidates. Finding work after 50 is not always easy, and job seekers may need to adjust their approach before they can get back in the workforce.
