Genesee County’s Holland Land Purchase Society and Holland Land Office Museum Face Financial Challenge EDITED BY AMANDA DUDEK

T

he year was 1894. Genesee County, New York, was growing and changing fast. Realizing the historical significance of area history could be lost, Mary Richmond founded The Holland Land Purchase Historical Society (HPHS). Its purpose? “The discovery, procuring and preservation of whatever related to the Holland Purchase lands, and all lands that had been owned by Robert Morris in Western New York.” For 126 years, it has done just that.

Active Living 50+ ____________________23 Auctions & Antiques ____________________18 Automotive _____________________3 Body & Mind ____________________13

Today, the HPHS is a 501c3 educational non-profit organization which oversees the operations of the Holland Land Office Holland Land Office Museum Museum (HLOM) and, impressively, its 15,000 artifacts. The HLOM mission is to preserve the past of Genesee County, Western New York, and The Holland Land Company for present and future generations. The HLOM features exhibits on Joseph Ellicott and early settlement, military history, agriculture and business, local artists, and other interesting topics.

Classifieds ____________________38 Employment ____________________30 Garage Sales ____________________17

The HPHS/HLOM has been the overseer of Genesee County’s historical artifacts and the “telling of our history and culture” through education and programs. During this time, it survived two world wars, a depression, and the events that affected our ability to provide our community with “telling the story” of its history. Now, the HLPS and HLOM face serious challenges during the aftermath of 2020.

Give & Take ____________________26 Home Services ____________________10 Hometown Events ____________________25

The HPHS has been deeply saddened by the restrictions of the COVID-19 virus and the resulting inability to hold many of our community events. However, the HPHS is not discouraged by the limited number of programs and fundraisers it can physically present to the public. Instead, the HPHS director has successfully accepted this challenge, developing programming through virtual presentations such as the Artifact Video Series, Java with Joe E., Virtual Guest Speakers, and Saturday Morning Children’s Program. Additionally, its Wonderland of Trees and basket raffle have gone forward, but without the annual fundraising gala.

Kidz Korner _____________________4 Passages ____________________27 Pet Place _____________________8

Unfortunately, HPHS was unable to hold its annual antique show, mystery dinner theater, its summer kids’ program, a variety of concerts and speakers, its senior bus tour as well as several other on-site fundraising activities. “Our members and volunteers have always been the bedrock of HPHS/HLOM,” said Don Burkel, HPHS/HLOM President. “Now more than ever, we need financial support to continue programming, virtual events, the preservation of our extensive artifact collection, and to continue representing or history and culture for years to come.”

Spring Tire M aintenance Salt, grim e and pot holes can take a toll on tires over the course of a typical w inter. Drivers w ill not get far this spring and sum m er w ithout tires in good repair, w hich is w hy tire m aintenance should be part of any seasonal repair checklist. Now is the tim e to use a tire pressure gauge to see if tires are at the ideal inflation levels. M any tires indicate the recom m ended PSI (pounds per square inch) on their sidew alls. Cold tem peratures m ay cause tires to deflate a little. Driving on im properly inflated tires can be dangerous, potentially affecting handling and braking distances. Check tires w hen they are cold for the m ost accurate reading. Properly inflated tires also w ill im prove fuel econom y. Exam ine the tires for tread w ear. Any uneven or abnorm al tread w ear could indicate that the tires need to be rotated and the w heels realigned at the very least. M echanics m ay recom m end rotating tires every 6,000 to 8,000 m iles, or about every six m onths for the average driver. Wheel realignm ent m ay be necessary after a season of driving over potholes and other irregularities in the road. Drivers m ay discover extrem e tread w ear, bulges or even cracks in the sidew all during a tire inspection. These signs indicate that it’s tim e to replace the tires. AUTOMOTIVE

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have two guinea pigs. Yesterday, I took them outside to get some sun. When I came back outside about 15 minutes later, they were both lying in their cage, completely stiff, as if they had been dead for hours. I thought they were dead. I brought them inside and was getting everything ready to bury them when one of them stirred very slowly, and then the other. Today, they are not as active, and they aren’t eating and only taking a little water when I give it to them through a dropper. What happened to them? Will they be OK? -- Analia R., via email

Penny Saver

DEAR ANALIA: Guinea pigs, also known as cavies, cannot regulate their body temperature very well. They should never be put into direct sunlight or a hot room. Your pets suffered heatstroke from being out in the sun, even though it was just a few minutes. This is most often fatal. I’m very surprised that they are both alive. They need to be treated very gently for the next several days. Contact their veterinarian (one who specializes in exotic pets), but do not bring them until the vet tells you to do so. Moving them can be very stressful. Continue gently giving them water through a dropper or syringe a few drops at a time. Place little bits of cucumber, lettuce or melon nearby; these have high water content and some nutrients. Cavies are extremely sensitive to sudden temperature changes, loud noises or rough handling. Be gentle with them and keep them in a comfortable location, out of direct sunlight.

DID YOU KNOW? The Internet has made it easier than ever before to access information quickly. But people who look to the Internet for answers to their medical questions may be doing themselves more harm than good. A 2013 study from the Pew Research Center found that one-third of study participants had gone online to diagnose a medical condition. While the Internet can be a valuable resource, self-diagnosing medical conditions can be dangerous, as the risk of misdiagnosing signs or symptoms is considerable. But misdiagnosis is not the only potential problem of relying on the Internet instead of certified physicians for medical advice. “Cyberchondria” is a term used to described the unfounded escalation of concerns about certain symptoms a person might be experiencing. These unfounded concerns escalate as individuals search for and read information about their symptoms online. In fact, a 2008 Microsoft analysis of online search patterns found that one-third of the hundreds of thousands of people examined in the analysis tended to escalate their medical-related searches, potentially turning relatively minor medical conditions into something far worse, all without consulting a doctor. Men and women concerned about symptoms or medical problems should resist the temptation to self-diagnose online and should book an appointment with their physicians instead.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Strategies to Reduce Risk of Colon Cancer ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 70 years old. I seem to be getting more polyps (which are removed). In the past five years, I have gone from one diverticulum to extensive diverticulosis throughout my entire colon. I try to have a high-fiber diet and use psyllium in my oatmeal daily. What more can I do? Eliminate red meat entirely and go vegan? -- J.D. ANSWER: Polyps in the colon confer a higher risk of colon cancer, and the more polyps a person has, the more frequently they should be screened, preferably with colonoscopy. There are some lifestyle changes most people can make to reduce the risk of polyps and of colon cancer. Regular exercise and eating plenty of fruits and vegetables are clearly shown to reduce colon cancer risk. Fiber has long been thought to be protective, but the results of trials have been contradictory. Among the many other possible protections to colon cancer, aspirin probably has the most benefit, but aspirin has other risks as well. People at high risk for colon cancer should discuss the use of aspirin with their doctors. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband and I are both 72 and of normal weight. I have fought high cholesterol and triglycerides for many years and have taken various statins for a long time. My triglycerides still trend high, but my other numbers are now normal. My husband eats a ton of processed meats, all the fat he wants and drinks three to five beers per day. His lipid panel results came back today, and his total cholesterol is 167, his LDL is 90, his HDL is 71, and his triglycerides are 29! He has never been on statin drugs. His only med is lisinopril for slightly high blood pressure. What I am concerned about is a CT scan done as part of a study we participated in. My husband’s results have mentioned calcification of heart arteries over the years, and the most recent says he has “SEVERE calcification of coronary arteries.” I want him to go to a cardiologist, but his family doc says that this is not a problem and as long as he keeps his blood pressure low, he can live a long time with this. He is satisfied with that answer. I’m really anxious to hear your thoughts about him needing to see a specialist. I hope you will be able to shed some light on the calcification and the reason why it happens with such good cholesterol readings. -- D.B. ANSWER: There are several important lessons in your story. The most important is that a poor diet increases the risk for heart disease even in a person with normal or good cholesterol results. Of people with a heart attack, 21% had cholesterol levels that would not trigger treatment with a statin drug. I suspect, but can’t be sure, that your husband has blockages in his coronary arteries; the severe calcification of the coronary arteries is an indicator that it is very likely. I would add my recommendation to yours that your husband see a cardiologist. He has a LOT of work to do at improving his diet, he is drinking more alcohol than recommended and because of the coronary artery calcification, I suspect his new cardiologist would be strongly considering medication treatment to reduce heart disease risk. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. HEALTH BENEFITS OF HONEY Regulates blood sugar: The combination of fructose and glucose in honey may help the body regulate its blood sugar levels, which could be beneficial to those with diabetes. Certain types of honey also may have a lower hypoglycemic index, which means they don’t cause a dramatic shift in blood sugar, according to the food and health resource Real Food for Life.

LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY Crowd control: Local restaurants tend to be smaller and more intimate than many chain restaurants. This can translate into a calm dining experience. When crowds are small, the noise level inside the restaurant may be muted and service may be fast because there aren’t as many tables to serve. Furthermore, local establishments, although concerned about making a profit, may be less worried about table turnover rate, preferring to let diners linger if it means repeat business.

GVPS POLL

To be interested in the changing seasons is a happier state of mind than to be hopelessly in love with spring. ~George Santayana

NOW HERE'S A TIP

An enormous container ship, the Ever Given, was finally freed from the Suez Canal where it had been stuck for a week. The inability to transverse this waterway cost billions of dollars a day. Given the global economic significance of the Suez Canal and a few other maritime passageways, should international checkpoints be created to act as monitors and handle crises?

WAYLAND: 7911 Schwab Hollow Road. 4/2-3 (9-5pm). EARLY BIRD GARAGE SALE. Something for everyone! Face masks required.

* Do you store plastic wrap in the refrigerator? Many home experts will tell you that storing plastic wrap in your fridge or freezer can help with the stickiness factor -- the plastic is easier to manipulate and get into place when cold, but still stays put. Try it and see! * Keep soap scum at bay on your glass shower doors with a layer of car wax. But do NOT let the wax get on your shower floors. That could be unsafe. * Want delicious fried chicken crust but not the dripping oil? Baste chicken pieces with mayonnaise, then dredge in crushed cracker crumbs mixed with a bit of flour. Bake and enjoy.

N.C.A.A. officials apologized after staggering disparities were identified between men’s and women’s workout facilities and admitted providing the women’s basketball players with cheaper, less sensitve coronavirus tests, as well. CLEVER WAYS TO USE LEFTOVERS CREATE NEW MEALS. Using leftovers does not mean eating the same exact meal a second time. Ingredients can be utilized in new ways. For example, a roast chicken can be broken down and the meat can be used for fajitas on another night. Leftover tomato sauce and meatballs from a Sunday dinner can be turned into an impromptu chili with the addition of beans and peppers.

* From L.D.W. in Illinois: “When I have a recipe, I put all the ingredients on the counter, and as I use each one, I put it away. My daughter and daughter-inlaw like the idea, as they at one time or another, have forgotten an item.” I like that one, too, L.D.W. A well-prepared cook makes a delicious meal. * Laundry soap -- liquids, powder and pacs -- should be added to the water before clothing. SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Stimulus Payment Merry-Go-Round A third round of stimulus payments are on their way. But has your second one shown up yet? Next question: Did you file last year’s 2019 taxes on paper instead of e-filing? If so, that might well be the reason you don’t have your money yet. The IRS got behind on processing the paper tax forms we sent a year ago. If all had gone well, those who were eligible should have received a $600 stimulus check (the second one) by Jan. 29, 2021. The IRS has a specific page for you to check the status of your stimulus payment, but it’s only good for the third stimulus check. All information for your first and second stimulus money has been removed from their website. Confused yet? You’re not alone. Start with www.irs.gov/coronavirus/get-my-payment and scroll to Get My Payment. Click on it and fill out the information. You’ll go to a page that tells you the status of the payment you’re to receive now, the third payment. If it says that payment information is Not Available, it means you’re not going to receive a payment the easy way (and might be why your second payment is still missing). On the Get My Payment page, click on Frequently Asked Questions to see what applies to you. Even if you don’t normally file, you’ll need to file for 2020 (preferably e-file) if you want that stimulus money quickly. Look for Line 30 on the Form 1040 or 1040-SR. It’s called the Recovery Rebate Credit. If you received Notice 1444 or 1444B in the mail from the IRS, it will tell you what figures to use. If you did receive the money but your financial situation has changed and you should have received a different amount, click on Recovery Rebate Credit. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

APRIL 2021 National Library Week Plus On Saturday, April 3 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Library continues Main Street’s celebration of the April “First Friday” event by providing a delightful and challenging “Morning Mystery” for children. Just by following all the clues provided out on the Library lawn children can find the solution to the Mystery! Our nation celebrates National Library Week beginning on April 4. However, we like longer celebrations of this yearly Library Event. Ms. Mary Ellen will provide kids and families with a Reading Bingo Sheet. This form will lead you through the Library, and when you find each “place” you can mark the Bingo Sheet. Here’s an example: the form will have you search the collection for a book on New York State. When you locate one, mark your Bingo Sheet! For more information, call us at 585-335-6720.

In April celebrate “Tea and Poems” with us! Pick up your pocket poem and tea bag starting April 5. Adults and Teens are asked to share their favorite poem or write their own. The staff will display their top poetry favorites! We look forward to hearing from you, poetically!

Enjoy the New Story Stroll

“Grab and Go” bags will be available all week beginning April 5. This enchanting Craft Bag celebrates spring with a “Let’s grow together!” theme. Ms. Mary Ellen has provided each craft bag with “Silly Face” pots and seeds with growing instructions. Extending the National Library Week celebration, join us Wednesday, April 14 to honor all our assistants during the 2021 Library Assistants’ Day. This year The Friends of the Library are sponsoring this recognition of those at DPL who work to help you find what you want to read, make copies or send a fax, create a new email account, search the internet, sign up to use a study room, or help you download your next e-book! The Friends recognize -- Linda Chapman, Lacey Keagy, Donna Chasey, Mary Ellen Arena, Carol Welcher, Julie Guzzardi, Penny Leven, and Sue Colegrove. There’s a special thank you to Jim “Drew” Goodell who keeps the building and grounds in good repair. And our thanks to our patrons for keeping our Library a place to celebrate! Light refreshments will be available.

Little readers and families have been enjoying the book, Worm Weather by Jean Taft on the Library lawn’s Story Stroll. On April 12 Ms. Mary Ellen invites children and families to enjoy the new Story Stroll on the Library lawn! Author Will Hillenbrand presents Kite Day, in celebration of National Kite Month. On Saturday, April 17, children can pick up their “grab and go” bag between 10 and 12 p.m. These bags feature do-ityourself kite kits. Just look for the new Library green tent on the lawn! For questions, please call us at 585-335-6720.

Miscellaneous The Village has announced the cancellation of Dogwood Week festivities. We will let you know when the next Used Book Sale will be scheduled. Watch for our ads in regard to the Budget and Trustee vote at the Library on May 11. Two Trustee positions are open. For more information, call the Library 585-335-6720.

Easter Fun! On Saturday, March 27 the Riga Recreation Department held its annual Easter Egg Hunt. It looked a bit different this year as a parade was held instead. All egg hunters met at the Churchville Commons and were lead up Main Street by Grand Marshal “Easter Bunny” and then down Buffalo Road to the Village of Churchville’s Steedman Gazebo. There they were met by the Churchville LEO Club members and handed “goodie bags” filled with eggs. They then went and tried guessing how many jelly beans were in

S E V RA Pancake Angels Last week, we met two “Angels” at the Cartwright’s Maple Tree Inn. A great conversation ensued over the best buttermilk pancakes. It made our day special. When we went to leave, we found they had paid our check! Thank you to the two great Angels & safe travels! Elected Officials A village mayor sends out a letter endorsing 2 of 3 trustees up for election. One is elected and the one not endorsed is elected. You made it known you did not want the one as a trustee. I hope this letter was not mailed under taxpayer village dollars. I would not expect you to take such a political stance knowing this could backfire on you. It is up to the trustees to market themselves not you. As the mayor how do you do your job effectively now? We expect you to be fair and not hold grudges. Small towns have clicks but your job is to do what is right for everyone.

What Teacher Vacation? In response to “Teacher Vacations:” Clearly you are not a teacher and have no idea what is going on with the schools. Most of the teachers are working even harder during this to make sure their students are getting their work done remotely. To say that school tax bills need to be reduced is ridiculous. Schools have had their aid slashed due to the state being almost bankrupt and have had to do so much more with less money. Of course, there probably are a few bad apples who are not really working during this, but isn’t that the case with every profession? If you want to be mad at someone, take it up with the state legislature and governor. Don’t blame the teachers and schools for this mess.

a gigantic water bottle! Arlene’s Costumes provided “Airbrush Tattoos” for those that wanted them. Thanks to the following organizations that made this a huge success: Village of Churchville, Town of Riga, Churchville Lions & LEO clubs, Erin Maysick & her Scout Troop, Arlene’s Costumes, and of course-THE EASTER BUNNY! Submitted by David Thomas, Supervisor of Recreation, Town of Riga

Educational System School employees need to get back to work or give me a refund on my school taxes! We have buildings and buses that are not being used and not to mention the non-use of heat and electricity! Hey all you taxpayers: your districts have big surpluses right now. Bet it would feel better in your bank account.

607-382-4668 EFFICIENCY AT WORK Information is now seemingly always at our fingertips thanks to mobile devices like smartphones and tablets. While these devices may theoretically allow workers to become more productive, research suggests otherwise. Professor, researcher and author Gloria Mark with the University of California, Irvine says that activity switching and being frequently interrupted, including self-interruptions like checking social media and email, can lead people to develop short attention spans. That inability to focus for extended periods of time can adversely affect efficiency. EMPLOYMENT
