PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

You can use a half inch mesh to surround your garden or individual plants but you will need to bury it 6 to 10 inches or so underground and have it extend about 12 inches above ground. Diamond engagement rings are presented as tokens of love and affection during wedding proposals. The majority of first-time brides will receive a diamond ring, with surveys indicating only 13 percent opt for another gemstone. Researchers from Emory University determined that the average price for a diamond ring is roughly $2,500. However, grooms can spend much more. Diamonds have symbolized eternal love for centuries, perhaps since they were first discovered in India more than 2,000 years ago. The ancient Greeks actually thought diamonds were tears of the gods, while ancient Romans believed diamonds were splinters from heavenly stars.

LAWN & LANDSCAPING HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) An unexpected development could change the Arian’s perspective on a potential investment. Keep an open mind. Ignore the double talk and act only on the facts. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A surge of support helps you keep your long-standing commitment to colleagues who rely on you for guidance. Ignore any attempts to get you to ease up on your efforts. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Family continues to be the dominant factor, but career matters also take on new importance. You might even be able to combine elements of the two in some surprising, productive way. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A realistic view of a workplace or personal situation helps you deal with it more constructively once you know where the truth lies. Reserve the weekend for someone special. LEO (July 23 to August 22) As much as you Leos or Leonas might be intrigued by the “sunny” prospects touted for a potential investment, be careful that you don’t allow the glare to blind you to its essential details. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A friend’s problem brings out the Virgo’s nurturing nature in full force. However, don’t go it alone. Allow others to pitch in and help share the responsibilities you’ve assumed. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A business decision might need to be put off until a colleague’s personal matter is resolved. Use this time to work on another business matter that you’ve been anxious to get to. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Relationships (personal or professional) might appear to be stalled because of details that keep cropping up and that need tending to. Be patient. A path begins to clear soon. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A promotion could cause resentment among envious colleagues. But others recognize how hard you worked to earn it, and will be there to support you if you need them. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Handling a delicate personal matter needs both your wisdom and your warmth. Expect some setbacks, but stay with it. The outcome will more than justify your efforts. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Resist the temptation to cut corners just because time is short. Best to move ahead step by step so you don’t overlook anything that might later create time-wasting complications. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Use the good will you recently earned with that wellreceived project to pitch your ideas for a new project. Expect some tough competition, though, from an unlikely source. BORN THIS WEEK: Your love of family extends beyond your personal life to include others to whom you generously extend your care and affection. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

Refresh Your Home for Spring Get rid of grime A whole season’s worth of dirt and dust accumulates during the cold winter months. A deep clean inside and out can restore your home to its former glory. Inside, take time to launder all of your linens, including curtains, rugs and bedding. Move furniture to vacuum behind and below, and don’t overlook dust and dirt magnets like mirrors, light fixtures and the insides of cabinets, especially higher shelves that see infrequent use. Outdoors, hose off or power-wash surfaces like windows, siding, decks and concrete to restore a crisp, clean appearance.

BOCES Students Help Livingston County “Bid Adieu to Diabetes” By Amanda Dudek

W

hen the Genesee Valley Educational Partnership’s (GVEP) Metal Trades Program at the Mount Morris Career and Technical Education (CTE) Center first created metal sculptures in support of charitable work, it is unlikely they could have guessed at their remarkable success. Now, in its 9th project year, Olie Olson, the Metal Trades Program instructor, along with his gifted and generous students, have joined with a committee in Dansville to support the “Bid Adieu to Diabetes” fundraiser. This fundraiser will support the Noyes Diabetes Center at Noyes Memorial Hospital in Dansville, benefiting those in Livingston County and beyond. The “Bid Adieu to Diabetes” fundraiser committee is made up of members from the Dansville Lions Club, Dansville Rotary Club, Dansville Ambulance Corp and Dansville Moose Lodge and is spearheaded by Lou Colella. Mr. Colella felt this fundraiser should bring the community together for a fun night of entertaining activities as well as give back to the community. Committee members recalled a past, successful, metal trades sculpture auction and reached out to instructor Olie Olson. Nancy Johnsen, a diabetes education professional from Noyes, visited Olson’s class. “She came into my classroom,” said teacher Olie Olson. “She asked my students about diabetes and whether they or anyone they knew have been impacted by it.” Many hands quickly went up from students eager to talk about how diabetes has touched their lives. “She wanted to explain to the students what was going to be done though their generous work and donation,” said Amy Pollard, President and CEO of Noyes Health. “This fundraiser will benefit the care of diabetic patients, primarily focused on education.” Pollard explained that many insurances will not pay for diabetes education, and others often have a high deductible which many patients are unable to afford. Therefore, a fair amount of Nancy Johnsen’s educational work is done free-of-charge. The funds raised through “Bid Adieu to Diabetes” will largely be targeted towards diabetes education, helping Johnsen to continue and expand her important work. “Success in managing diabetes is related to good education, not only in understanding the disease but also in understanding the role and proper application of diet, medication and exercise,” continued Pollard. “We want to teach people how to control their diabetes rather than letting it control them.” Pollard emphatically stated that diabetes is “nothing to fool around with,” and can lead to many other health concerns, including serious complications such as dialysis and amputation, if not managed properly. By creating scrap metal sculptures for auction, Olson and his Metal Trades students will help ensure that those with diabetes learn how to best manage this disease. Olie Olson sees additional benefits to his students, as well. “Students are able to integrate math and English into my class,” said Olson at the “Bid Adieu to Diabetes” Kickoff, a free event held on May 11th at Star Theater in Dansville. “When you put subjects like these into real world settings, students are better able to see the value in them. I remember one young

man whose mother believed he didn’t enjoy reading, but in my class, this young man would read my completed shop journals from cover to cover! Creating metal sculptures to support such charities as the Vincent House in Dansville and later in Wayland, the United Way, the Red Cross, Avon Community Cares, Autism Up, mental health, Suzanne’s Comfort Care Home in Perry, and now “Bid Adieu to Diabetes” often inspires student engagement. “Metallurgy can be a little dry on its own, but when you start talking about their projects and which welds work and which don’t and why, students become very interested,” said Olson. Students have already completed 27 scrap metal sculptures of various sizes, including a frog playing a guitar, a life-size dog, rose bouquet, a rooster, spinning sunflowers and a heart with a rhythm strip. These sculptures are now on display at several Dansville area businesses until the auction on June 1st. Past sculpture auctions have frequently raised upwards of $30,000. “For us, these projects are about giving our students the opportunity to put what they have learned into practice while teaching them how important it is to give back to their communities,” said Maggie Fitzgibbon of the GVEP. Olson added that Dansville art students, led by teachers Matt Buckholz and Greg McMasters, also contributed by painting these sculptures. “This was a great way to bring the communities together,” commented Olson, adding that the Dansville community has always been extremely supportive. The students certainly seem to enjoy it. One of Olson’s students, also present at the Kickoff event, having created the large sculpture with spinning sunflowers, decided to create a second work, as well. “It is always exciting to get young people involved in their communities,” said Amy Pollard. “We’re also helping them to understand the impact of diabetes on a person’s health.” The “Bid Adieu to Diabetes” auction will take place on June 1st at 6pm at the Moose Lodge located at 6 Main Street. Tickets are $10 per person and may be purchased from the following Dansville Businesses: Dogwood Floral, the Genesee Valley Penny Saver - Dansville office, Millcreek Optical and Skip’s Flooring. Everyone was so helpful I would like to alert computer users (seniors and younger users) of a very clever SCAM going around that I fell victim to. I started having trouble accessing my e-mail – the man would say, “Hmm can’t locate that info right now.” Then the screen would teasingly say, “Here’s your e-mail!” Then it would disappear. Then pop-ups would appear from an IT with an 800 number – “Please call us, we see you’re having trouble.” I didn’t call them. Suddenly she was on the phone and had contacted me! “I can see you’re having trouble. It’s an e-mail block! We can fix it! We “clean” it and add an antivirus and protection for just $249.99!! What’s your credit card number?” Like a fool, I gave it to them. It’s so much more convenient they told me. I can have new icons with news channels and an icon just for email. What kind of people would take advantage of a Retired United States Army Veteran? Obviously, it’s the kind of people who have no morals or conscience. The audacity and greed of this particular landlord and his wife, knowing what they have been doing for the past 6 years. These two individuals live in our very own community. You know who you are, and you both should be ashamed of yourselves. And why are landlords not held accountable for their rental property? In particular, privately owned residences with apartments or houses. They should be up to code; not every landlord complies with the law. It’s a terrible injustice when a landlord can avoid fines and penalties for providing substandard rental units. Can someone enlighten me with some legal information pertaining to this topic? #CARMA

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have never seen anything in your column about sebaceous hyperplasia. I read that it is quite similar to acne and that a person could use an acne treatment to keep the condition in check. Could you give your thoughts on this? -- R.G. ANSWER: Although sebaceous hyperplasia can be mistaken for acne, sebaceous hyperplasia happens mostly to middle-aged adults (or newborns). These bumps appear most commonly on the forehead and cheeks, and have an umbilicus (a small hole) in the center. They are enlargements of the oil-producing sebaceous glands. They happen particularly in people with oily skin. Treatment can be challenging. Reducing dietary fat and using a good-quality skin-care regimen for oily skin may help. Dermatologists can treat these when they are cosmetically important, not because they cause harm in themselves. Although they can be mistaken for basal cell cancers of the skin, they are not cancerous or pre-cancerous. They are mostly treated mechanically, and by that I mean using a surgical technique like cauterization or excision. But these techniques can leave scars. Laser and phototherapy have good cosmetic results but are expensive. Isotretoin, a systemic acne drug with significant side effects, also has been shown in a small study to be effective.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am currently taking 20 mg of Xarelto daily, and have a screening colonoscopy scheduled soon. The preparation instructions said not to stop taking blood thinners, but didn’t specifically mention Xarelto. I contacted the office and spoke with a scheduler, who said those instructions applied to all blood thinners. Previously, I was told that I would need to go off of blood thinners for five days prior to a colonoscopy. Since this was a contradiction to the instructions from the clinic, I have tried to reach out to other medical sources to see if I could get a consensus on what to do, but no one has responded to me yet. There is a strong history of clotting problems in my family. Would you weigh in on this matter? The last time I had a screening colonoscopy was around 2005, and there weren’t any issues. I realize this is a scope and not surgery, but it has me concerned enough that I am considering putting this off until I can get a satisfactory response. -- B.R. ANSWER: Most screening colonoscopies now are done with patients still on their anticoagulants, although for patients on warfarin (Coumadin), it is preferable for levels to be on the low end of the therapeutic range. This is a standard recommendation by the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. The situation would be different for a high-risk endoscopic procedure, such as removing a large polyp. I have had to deal with this situation many times in my practice, and most often, all anticoagulants are stopped then restarted after the colonoscopy. There are some people who are at such high risk for clots that we use injection medications to prevent blood clots until the night before the procedure, but that is normally reserved for the highest risk of all. It’s a judgment call as to whether to use the injection anticoagulants to prevent clots around the colonoscopy. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. TAKING THE PAIN OUT OF LIVE EVENT MANAGEMENT (NAPSI)—Anyone involved in running a theater, festival, or a sporting or live music event knows all too well the difficulty of doing it on your own. Some event managers turn to third parties like Eventbrite or Ticketmaster to get help with critical ticket sales, but one of the biggest pain points is finding an effective ticketing solution that supports their brand. When ticketing, marketing, fundraising and donation activities are not synchronized, event managers spend more time managing their business rather than the event itself. This leads to lost profits and angry patrons. Rick Blair, co-founder of Artisan Center Theater in Hurst, TX, went through years of trying different ticket brokers to increase sales, but was put off by the high fees and lack of personal attention. He also found that the solutions he tried did not work well with his other tools. “I had separate platforms for ticketing, marketing, website updates and donor management. None of them talked to each other and the entire process was a mess,” he said.

1. Sunset at the South End of Hemlock Lake 1. Outside Erwin Hall at SUNY Geneseo 4. Rain, Rain, Go Away... Okay fine, let’s play! 4. Ruger retrieving! - South End of Hemlock Lake State Land

Two years ago, he discovered the Vendini ticketing platform. Now the theater has an all-in-one system to handle VIP alerts and online, mobile and box office ticket sales that integrates with e-mail, social and direct marketing.

Vendini makes event execution simpler and faster. Event managers can create an event, specify dates and times, set pricing, and start selling tickets in minutes. Vendini’s live event management software helps managers like Blair run events more easily and effectively.

By using Vendini’s Patron Connect, Blair and his team are notified when a donor is coming to the show and where they will be sitting. “When I get the alert, I can rush to my office, write a thank-you card, and slip it onto the donor’s seat before they arrive. That has resulted in many new donations because everyone appreciates a personal touch. Patron Connect is one of my most powerful marketing tools.”

FENTON for Board of Education My name is Deborah Fenton and I am running for one of the two vacant positions for School Board of the Dansville Central School District. I retired from Dansville in June of 2018 after teaching for 30 years, the last 25 in Dansville. I loved my career and I really want to see the district become what it once was – the “Gem of the Valley.” Being recently retired, I believe I can contribute information on what we are doing that is working and what needs to be changed or added to help us improve our educational services for the children in the Dansville Central School District. I will also be interested in hearing your thoughts and ideas and working to implement the best of these to help the children in our school district while being fiscally responsible for the taxpayers as well. Many, if not most, improvements don’t cost money. They can be achieved through communication, using resources we already have, and the community working together. In order to achieve this, I need your support. So, please vote for me on May 21st when you come out to vote on the DCSD Budget for 2019-2020. Thank you! Deborah Fenton

GET KIDS EXCITED ABOUT VOLUNTEERING Volunteering benefits people of all ages, but can be especially beneficial to children. Studies have indicated that teenagers who volunteer are less likely to become pregnant or use drugs. In addition, in a review of 60 studies on child engagement, Child Trends found that children who participate in civic engagement programs are likely to be more involved in school, to graduate from high school and to hold more positive civic attitudes than those who do not get involved in such programs. Getting kids to volunteer as they progress through adolescence may not be so difficult. In its 2014 analysis of volunteering trends, Child Trends found that 39 percent of twelfth grade students volunteered at least once a month in 2014 compared to just 27 percent of eighth graders. Older students might feel compelled to volunteer to improve their college admissions applications, but parents can take steps to get their younger children excited at the prospect of volunteering. Set a positive example. Young children want to emulate their parents, so moms and dads who volunteer may find ready and willing partners in their children. Parents can inform their children when they volunteer and why they do so before bringing kids along to join them. Don’t forget fun. Young children may be more likely to embrace volunteering if the activity is fun. Kids might not find it too fun to sit next to their parents while mom and dad balance a soup kitchen’s books, but a beach cleanup excursion or a trip to refurbish an inner city park may inspire kids to spend a lifetime giving back to their communities and helping the less fortunate. Keep it simple. Kids may not enjoy volunteering activities that consume too much time or make them feel exhausted. As kids grow older, parents can encourage them to embrace more challenging activities and/or commit more time to volunteering. But keep things simple with especially young children or older children who have never before volunteered. Try and try again. It might take some trial and error before parents find volunteering opportunities their children truly enjoy. When volunteering with children for the first time, be careful not to commit to more than one day. If children enjoy themselves, then parents can commit more time. If kids do not seem excited by an activity, parents won’t feel guilty or let the charity down by not returning. Children can benefit greatly by volunteering, and parents can get their youngsters involved at an early age. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Atrial fibrillation is the most common type of arrhythmia, w hich is a problem w ith the rate or rhythm of the heartbeat during w hich the heart can beat too fast, too slow or w ith an irregular rhythm. Atrial fibrillation, or AF, occurs w hen rapid, disorganized electrical signals cause the atria, w hich consists of the heart’s tw o upper chambers, to contract very fast and irregularly. According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, w hen a person is suffering from AF, blood begins to pool in his or her atria. W hile that blood pools in the atria, it is not being pumped completely into the heart’s tw o low er chambers, and this prevents the low er and upper chambers from w orking together effectively. Though AF does not alw ays produce noticeable symptoms, some people w ith AF experience chest pain or heart failure, especially w hen the heart rhythm is rapid. AF can increase a person’s risk of stroke, and it may surface periodically or become an ongoing problem that lasts for years.

DIFFERENT GENERATIONS CAN LEARN AND BENEFIT FROM ONE ANOTHER In the not-so-distant past, extended families frequently lived in close proximity to one another. Such families shared meals and experiences and essentially grew up together. Nowadays, families separate for various reasons, such as job opportunities and cost of living concerns. While there are advantages to spreading out, there are also some disadvantages, namely that grandparents and grandchildren may not see one another frequently enough. Even though people of different age groups may not entirely have the same interests, the interactions between generations can benefit both young people and their aging relatives. Fostering intergenerational connections is a great way to broaden social circles, improve communication and learn new things.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On May 23, 1911, the New York Public Library, the largest marble structure ever built in the United States, is dedicated in New York City. It took 14 years to complete. The next day some 40,000 people passed through its doors. The collection already consisted of more than a million books. * On May 25, 1927, Robert Ludlum, the author of 21 best-selling thrillers, including the Jason Bourne spy novels, is born in New York City. Ludlum sold more than 300 million books before his death in 2001.

Good Ideas On Aging Well (NAPS)—May is Older Americans Month! Staying connected to the community is a key ingredient to healthy and successful aging. But for many older adults, staying connected can be difficult. Fortunately, older adults and their caregivers can contact the Eldercare Locator to learn about local programs and resources that can help them stay engaged and active in their communities.

* On May 26, 1959, Harvey Haddix of the Pittsburgh Pirates pitches 12 perfect innings against the Milwaukee Braves, only to lose the game on a two-run double in the 13th inning. It was the first time in major-league history that a pitcher threw more than nine perfect innings . * On May 24, 1964, a referee’s call in a soccer match between Peru and Argentina sparks a riot. More than 300 fans were killed and another 500 injured in the violent melee at National Stadium in Lima, Peru.

Programs funded through the Older Americans Act provide older adults with many ways to stay active and involved in the community. For example, exercise classes, educational programs, volunteer opportunities and other health and wellness activities are available to older adults in communities around the country. Need more help than that? The Eldercare Locator can also connect you to local resources designed to help older adults maintain their independence at home, such as transportation, in-home assistance with daily needs, home modifications and assistance with healthy meals. The Eldercare Locator is a free service of the U.S. Administration for Community Living that is administered through the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging. Contact the Eldercare Locator at (800) 677-1116, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday and online at eldercare. acl.gov. Older Americans and the people who care for them can get help and advice from experts.

Is a spider crawling on a driver reason enough for an accident like this? • Yes, I would still be sceaming! • I would expect some swerving. • I am not sure. • The driver should pull over before panicking.

RELIEVE STRESS THROUGHOUT THE DAY Stress affects people from all walks of life, and the causes of stress are as varied as the people it afflicts. In its 2017 Stress in AmericaTM survey, the American Psychological Association found that the three most common sources of stress were the future of the nation (63 percent), money (62 percent) and work (61 percent). According to the National Institute of Mental Health, routine stress that becomes chronic can result in a host of negative side effects. Such stress can suppress the immune system, disrupt digestion and have an adverse effect on sleep. But men and women who feel stressed at the end of each day need not resign themselves to sleepless nights and/or weakened immune systems. A proactive approach to alleviating stress during the day can help men and women reduce their stress levels and avoid the negative side effects associated with chronic stress.

(NAPSI)—The United States has long been considered a leader in entrepreneurial pursuits, with everyone from ambitious self-starters to certified moguls making their way here from around the globe to transform dreams into realities. According to the Global Entrepreneurship Development Institute, the United States provides the best environment for cultivating entrepreneurship, ranking first out of 138 countries. On the flip side, however, first-time business owners have only an 18 percent chance of succeeding. So how to bridge the gap between the dreamers and the triumphant? If you’re a student looking for a way to make your passion into your career, you may be glad to learn there’s a college program that can put you on the right path, while also providing you with a classic liberal arts education. The new Entrepreneurship minor course of study at Pennsylvania’s Lycoming College provides a modern approach to a liberal arts education, while preparing students to start a company of their own, to work for another entrepreneurial company or to be more entrepreneurial within a larger company. The program is headed by Marshall D. Welch III, the Sloter Endowed Chair in Entrepreneurship at Lycoming College, who is an accomplished entrepreneur with extensive experience advising and managing organizations, merger integration and emerging growth companies. He also approaches entrepreneurship differently from others. Welch believes that entrepreneurship, at its core, is finding and creating value, and that studying entrepreneurship as an academic discipline helps students learn to be innovative in whatever field they ultimately pursue. In less than one year, Lycoming College’s entrepreneurship classes have become a sought-after, valued addition to many students’ class schedules. The program is built on the notion that any student’s core education, regardless of academic major, can be augmented with the practical knowledge and skills necessary to take a business idea to fruition, such as innovation, digital marketing, intellectual property and financial skills. “My No. 1 objective is to create a world-class experience for students by joining the liberal arts with entrepreneurship,” said Welch. “I believe that the core knowledge of any entrepreneur is first his or her primary field of study, whether that is biology, archaeology, music or any of the other majors at Lycoming. Then add the practical knowledge and skills necessary to help our students become successful entrepreneurs or even work for entrepreneurial companies.” Firmly grounded in the liberal arts, the College has modernized its approach to higher education by offering courses that better prepare students for the 21st century. Still in its infancy, the program is already attracting well-known speakers to campus. Jay Ducote, celebrity chef and restaurateur, who has appeared on Food Network and Travel Channel, recently lectured to the College community on how he followed his passion and took risks on his road to success. “Lycoming is resolute in its mission to offer students a 21st-century education, and I believe our entrepreneurship offerings are an important part of that charge. Thinking deeply and making bold decisions to do something the world has never seen, while also staying true to your passions, accurately describes the students at this institution—a truth that also closely aligns with the principles of entrepreneurship,” said Welch.
