AVOID ACHES AND PAINS WHEN GARDENING People who have not spent much time in a garden may not consider this rewarding hobby much of a threat to their health. But as veteran gardeners can attest, gardening can contribute to nagging aches and pains that can force even the most ardent green-thumbers indoors. Gardening is a physical activity that, despite its peaceful nature, can be demanding on the body.

MAKE BEDROOMS MORE CONDUCIVE TO SLEEP Use a white noise machine. Noise is a potential contributor to poor sleep. The NSF notes that some people may have their sleep interrupted by noise even if they don’t know it. White noise machines are often used to help infants sleep, but such machines can be just as effective at helping adults. The NSF notes that the constant ambient sound created by white noise machines masks activity both inside and outside the house, helping men and women enjoy more restful sleep. ●

HOW TO CONSERVE WATER AT HOME Install shower heads that earned the WaterSense label. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says that showering accounts for nearly 17 percent of home water consumption. For the average family, that translates to almost 1.2 trillion gallons of water each year. Shower heads that have earned the EPA’s WaterSense label have met various conservation criteria established by the EPA. Such shower heads are 20 percent more efficient than the average product that does not have the label. According to the EPA, the average family can save 2,900 gallons of water per year by installing shower heads that have earned the WaterSense label. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

BRAISED PORK BUNS WITH QUICK PICKLED CUCUMBERS & BEAN SPROUTS Yields 11 servings For pork: 2 teaspoons expeller-pressed grapeseed or canola oil 3.15 pounds Boston butt, cut into 3 pieces along natural muscle separation, trimmed of surface fat 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1/4 cup vermouth, rice wine or dry sherry 2 1/2 cups thinly sliced red cabbage 1 small onion, sliced (about 1 cup) 3 tablespoons molasses (or honey) 2 tablespoons reduced sodium soy sauce 2 tablespoons minced garlic 2 tablespoons minced ginger 1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds For cucumbers: 1 tablespoon honey 1/8 teaspoon salt 3 tablespoons rice vinegar 2 large cucumbers, peeled, cut in half lengthwise, seeded with a spoon, thinly sliced 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper To assemble: 11 soft whole-wheat hamburger buns 2 3/4 cups mungbean sprouts To make the pork: Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add the oil. Season the pork on all sides with salt and pepper. When oil begins to shimmer, add pork and brown on all sides, about 4 minutes per side. Add browned pork to a slow cooker. Off of the heat, add the vermouth and then place on low heat, scraping up any brown bits from the bottom of the skillet with a wooden spoon. Add contents of the skillet to the slow cooker, along with cabbage, onion, molasses, soy sauce, garlic, ginger, and sesame seeds. Cover and cook on high for 1 hour; then reduce heat to low and cook for 4 hours (alternatively, cook the pork on low for the entire duration, 6 to 7 hours). To make the cucumbers: One hour before serving, in a medium bowl, stir and dissolve the honey and salt into the rice vinegar and then add the cucumbers and pepper. Chill. To assemble: Toast the buns cut side up under a broiler or in a toaster oven. Fill the buns with pork, drained cucumbers and bean sprouts. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

SENIOR NEWS LINE

Safety first before mixing medications

By Matilda Charles

Staying Informed Has your Meals on Wheels expanded their service? In a number of areas, the program has taken on more volunteers or widened the area they cover, having received grants and other funding, giving more seniors the opportunity to have meals delivered. If you have a Medicare Advantage plan, those meals might be covered, if you meet the qualifications. Some areas are establishing meal delivery from restaurants for seniors who shouldn't go out. If you have a town council, they will know about any kind of changes in your area. Some towns have an online list of restaurants with details about whether they're closed or are providing service (curbside, limited inside seating or delivery). Other areas have free senior pickup meals for those who can drive to the location. Call your local senior center or check their website for more information. If you're not certain what programs are available in your area to help you, go online to 211.org and put your ZIP code in the search box. That will take you to the 211 for your state. You can either call them or click on their online directory of information. They list food (delivery and pantry), substance use, utility assistance, transportation and much more. Each agency lists the programs it offers, such as personal support services and family caregiver. Stay healthy.

The American Heart Association notes that mixing drugs can produce unexpected side effects. This can make it dangerous for people already on prescription medications to use over-the-counter drugs for issues like headache or seasonal allergies. Understanding the potential interactions between their prescriptions and common prescription and over-the-counter medications can help people stay safe. · Antihistamines: Antihistamines are widely used to alleviate symptoms of the common cold or seasonal allergies, such as runny nose, itchy eyes and sneezing. The AHA notes that, when taken along with blood pressure medication, antihistamines can contribute to an accelerated heart rate and cause blood pressure to spike. The AHA also cautions people taking sedatives, tranquilizers or prescriptions to treat high blood pressure or depression to consult their physicians before taking antihistamines. · Bronchodilators: Bronchodilators relax and open the airways in the lungs and are used to treat various lung conditions, such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD. These drugs make it easier to breathe and are available via prescriptions. But patients with heart disease, high blood pressure, thyroid disease, and/or diabetes should discuss the potential interactions between bronchodilators and other medications they may be taking with their physicians. · Cordarone: According to Drugs.com, Cordarone is used to treat potentially deadly abnormal heartbeats. Cordarone can cause severe problems that affect the lungs, thyroid or liver, and can be dangerous when combined with other drugs. For example, the AHA notes that patients who take more than 20 milligrams of Zocor, a drug used to lower “bad” cholesterol and potentially to lower the risk of stroke, heart attack and other conditions, while also taking Cordarone are at risk of developing rhabdomyolysis. Rhabdomyolysis is a condition marked by the breakdown of muscle tissue that can lead to kidney failure or death. The AHA also says that Cordarone can inhibit or reduce the effects of the blood thinner Coumadin. · Nicotine replacement products: People taking prescriptions for depression or asthma should consult their physicians before taking any nicotine replacement products. The Federal Drug Administration notes that doctors may want to change dosages of patients’ current medications before recommending they take any nicotine replacement products. The FDA also advises people to speak with their physicians before trying these products if they have diabetes, heart disease, asthma or stomach ulcers; have had a recent heart attack; have high blood pressure but do not take any medication for it; or have a history of irregular heartbeat. Drug interactions can complicate treatment of various conditions. People currently on medication are urged to speak with their physicians before taking any new medicines, including over-the-counter drugs. TF207100

St. Agnes School Saved by Community Generosity By Amanda Dudek

I

t was an unprecedented situation. After 145 years of serving Avon and surrounding communities, St. Agnes School, the “little school on the circle” in Avon, was facing closure. The shutdown across all New York schools due to the COVID-19 pandemic had prevented St. Agnes from holding three of its major fundraisers as the 2019-2020 school year was coming to a close. On April 27th in the face of a budget deficit, it seemed likely the recommendation going forward on May 8th would be for the school’s closure. “We were at risk of Father Michael making a recommendation for the schools to close for the 2020-2021 school year due primarily to a budget deficit,” shared Elizabeth Jensen, principal of St. Agnes School. “The Parishes that support St. Agnes School will reduce support as well since the pandemic has created an unknown and tenuous financial situation, and collections are down.” Jensen asked what could be done, and the answer was nothing short of a miracle: raise $100,000 in just over ten days. In spite of this seemingly impossible task, those at St. Agnes School pressed on. “The next day, we formed a task force, and on April 29th, we put up a GoFundMe,” she explained. “Within three days, we had raised $100,000 thanks to community members, alumni, current and former parents of students, teachers, and even students, which was so sweet.” According to Jensen, this modern-day miracle was the answer to their prayers. Community members united in many ways to save this local gem. “One of our parents raised over $3,000 in a matter of a few days with a can and bottle drive,” she recalled. “Everyone came together to make this happen. The most powerful thing about this miracle isn’t the money, it’s the people!” Other community members, like Dipper Dan’s, made the case for St. Agnes School to remain open, sharing passionate and positive testimonies on the school’s GoFundMe page. “The Mayor of Avon sent a letter on the effect losing the school would have on the community,” she shared. “Veterans expressed their support of our school and the way we teach patriotism. Medical professionals cited the impact the school’s closing would have on mental health. We shared our test scores compared to surrounding areas.” The task force also put together a package, which included plans to increase the upcoming year’s enrollment, to convince Father Michael and others in the Diocese of all the other reasons St. Agnes School should remain open. On May 6th, just ten short days after the St. Agnes School stood on the brink of closure, Father Michael presented the Bishop with a letter recommending that Avon’s St. Agnes School remain open. “He was able to share all the ways we had solved this problem,” explained Jensen. “The community rallied around our school. It was amazing St. Agnes School student, Cole, how many of them see our school encourages others to be a as part of our parish and part of light in the dark! our community. They were bothered that they didn’t know sooner, and I think this has taught us that, when we see trouble coming, we should reach out sooner and not just for financial help, but for all kinds of support.” “At first, we thought we were only fighting for our students,” she continued. “But it turned out we were fighting for so many more people. It is all worth it when you realize the hundreds of people you have fighting with you in your corner. The community sees us as part of what makes them who they are, and they don’t want to lose us. That is why the Mayor and our Veterans were so willing to write letters. We are a part of the community, and this incredible support, love and generosity means so much, especially when so many people are struggling through this pandemic. This is our 145th year, and I am so thankful it didn’t stop.”

St. Agnes School student, Evangeline, stands by her school sign!

“Our drive encouraged others to be “a light in the darkness,” said Jensen. “When they donated, they were a light in our dark time. They lit up our sky!” Jensen feels it is also important to share this incredible experience with others. “Already, another struggling school will be following in our footsteps,” she shared. “We want to tell our story because, if we can do this in the community of Avon, why can’t other schools which are struggling do the same? I am certain there are other schools in similar situations right now, and we cannot let these faith-based schools close. They are so much more than centers for learning; they educate the whole child, earning the praise of parents and students, both past and present.” Now, St. Agnes School’s big mission is to carry this momentum and move forward. “We want to make sure we increase enrollment, close the deficit and create a reserve,” stated Jensen. “We are working on a five-year plan, partnering with our foundation on development. We plan to build stronger relationships with our parishes, providing them more support and having a greater presence there. We are looking at fundraising avenues while being mindful not to overtax our parents. We are doing everything we can to be here another 145 years!” Enjoy this article? and tries to meet everyone’s needs. Staff call families, so each one is contacted three times a week to offer support, attend online meetings, and provide learning for their students. The school hands out lunches and is working diligently on new ways to keep the students engaged.

This is my first year working at the school as an aide, and I have a child in middle school, so I have firsthand experience with what is happening. The middle school teacher has online meetings with the students on Mondays and Fridays. She posts lessons online and follows up with the students and parents when the work isn’t returned. She reviews the work, writes comments and requires the work to be fixed and returned. She accepts phone calls on her personal line throughout the day

This goes out to all the management and staff at Trader Joe’s in Pittsford. They are doing an exceptional job in keeping their customers safe. They have a wonderful system of keeping customers separated outside, checking that all are wearing masks, keeping few customers in the store at one time, giving the customer a completely sanitized cart (not just a quick wipe), wiping down the credit card machine regularly, not allowing cloth bags for groceries and providing free paper bags instead, and just generally being helpful to the customers and keeping a positive with the yard? It’s their property! They might not have as much free time on their hands. If you’re worried about the property value, maybe you should offer to help them with their yard. Thank you.

The recommendations also said get in and out quickly as possible in the stores, so two people splitting up and getting the groceries gets the job done faster. That’s less time in the grocery store. I have seen big box store parking lots crammed with cars, and I have seen families shopping in there. Leave your family at home. Bring just one or two from the family, too. I don’t see many people doing the 6-foot social distancing rule, and some are without masks. Why does it really matter that your neighbor doesn’t keep up

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

While some of us follow the social distancing, stay at home, wear the mask orders, others do not. What a disregard for the wellbeing of others! Shame, shame, shame. We know of someone who is sick with a cough, and yet they have company come over their house. The guest was even hugged! They did not wear masks. They also have been driving around and gone out and not for essential things. So, they put everyone at risk. Do they have a death wish? Are they that ignorant, or possibly just defiant? Beware when you go out! If this sick person was there before you,

attitude. All other stores could take a lesson from them to keep our community safe. I will continue to be a loyal customer there. Thank you! Lima Food Pantry certainly takes care Lima’s hungry during this hard time! One example is they work together with Fanatics Restaurant every Tuesday by freely giving Fanatics’ cooked MEALS to Lima’s hungry! Those are free delicious meals, folks! Fanatics Restaurant should be gratefully acknowledged as well as The Lima Food Pantry staff for their well-meaning, freely given efforts! How kind! Thank you! - A Lima resident I want to thank Steve for trimming around my light post. In a world where some, who call themselves neighbors, would not even cut or trim a blade of grass if it were on their neighbor’s lawn, it is refreshing to have a neighbor who knows the value of treating then you could be possibly infected with whatever it is that they have. Meanwhile, for those who do care to follow the guidelines and recommendations, thank you, and may you stay well. In a world turned topsy turvy by the virus, I find it delightful someone having pink rocks. and if they want to leave some at the park, go for it. For the person complaining, lighten up; it is not hurting anything. I have a pink car, and people like looking at it. Most people like it and take pictures of it and think it is nice. Just because you don’t enjoy the pink rocks doesn’t mean you have to take the smile off someone else’s face. Life has become too serious in the light of things, and spreading some happiness is much appreciated. You can just ignore them and scroll on by in your thoughts, like you would on Facebook, for something you don’t like there.

someone the way they would want to be treated - a good principle to live by. It may seem like a small act of kindness, but it was greatly appreciated. Once again, thank you for being such a good neighbor. I went to the drive thru of Five Star in Brockport. I was nervous about how it would turn out since I haven’t done any banking at a drive thru in years. I had deposits to make and asked for a deposit slip, so I could fill it out, and was pleasantly surprised when Jorayn (hope I spelled it correctly) told me that she could just do it for me. Not only did she do that for me, but she also printed up additional deposit slips for me as well. She also told me that when I use them all up to tell them at the bank, and they will print some more up. It is such a pleasure to bank with Five Star. Thanks for being so kind Jorayn and extending such kindness.

In response to the post entitled “Protect Liberty:” How about do the right thing and follow the guidelines and protect others from what could be a death-dealing illness? That is why we are in the situation we are in: people who feel like you do. It’s called common decency, and it’s the ethical and moral thing to do. Like an official said, how difficult can it be to wear a mask? Really! Have a good day, and make sure to stay well. Will you give up your ventilator should you need one? Food for thought. Regarding those who defiantly disobey social distancing, wearing of masks or protest in order to go back to work too soon during this coronavirus pandemic: I feel authorities should collect their social security numbers, and they shouldn’t be allowed to go to the hospital and go on ventilators because they are bringing harm to others.

TIPS TO HELP MEN LOOK THEIR BEST: Make an effort to reduce stress. Stress produces a host of negative side effects, some of which can indirectly affect appearance. Some people dealing with stress end up suffering from insomnia, which can contribute to bags under the eyes. Stress also can adversely affect hydration of the skin, contributing to dry skin. Stress also can contribute to hormonal imbalances that lead to skin conditions such as acne, psoriasis and eczema. If stress is a problem, make a concerted effort to reduce it, even working with a physician to reduce stress when necessary.

PAW'S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL DRIVING VACATION: Plan food and accommodations. Some people like to plan road trips as they go. Those who prefer to have greater control can decide where to stop in advance, researching hotels, attractions and dining establishments.

To be interested in the changing seasons is a happier state of mind than to be hopelessly in love with spring. ~George Santayana

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Need a twist tie in an emergency? Check your coffee bag. Many bean bags sold these days -- from the grocery store and specialty roasters alike -- come in a bag with a twist tie built in, so you can fold the bag down and retain freshness. If you really need one, you can pull the twist tie off and seal your grounds in a tin or a zipper-top baggie.

Magic Maze BEANIES

* Get to know your frozen veggies. There’s been a lot of emphasis in the past about fresh vegetables. While they’re great, it’s not always possible to get to the grocer’s or farmer’s market regularly. Frozen veggies often have the most vitamins because most are flash frozen right after harvest. You can find many varieties, and they’re easy to use in most recipes. * New use for a favorite mug: “My friend gave me a coffee mug that’s adorable, but it’s not very nice in the microwave -- it just gets too hot! I drink hot tea, and my mug is constantly in and out of the microwave. So, I use my gift mug to hold tea bags! It sits on my counter and holds enough packaged bags for a full week. And I can look at it and think of my friend.” -- T.W. in South Carolina * “To get the rubber tops of my son’s sneakers clean, and keep them that way, I use the melamine cleaning sponges, like the Magic Eraser. Just get it damp, rub off (most) grass stains and keep it handy.” -- P.E. in Kentucky * Gotta paint a door? Put a lag bolt into the top and bottom of the door, on the narrow. This way, the lag bolt rests on your sawhorses, and you can flip the door over to paint each side. No longer do you have to paint one side, let it dry ALL THE WAY and then flip it over, risking paint getting pulled off the edges.

Fleas Spark Cat Spat DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I visited my friend’s house with my cat back in March. Now, my friend says my cat, “Chuckles,” gave her cat fleas. She wants me to pay for flea treatment. I say my cat doesn’t have fleas and I don’t owe her a thing. What do you say? -- Sierra in Modesto, California DEAR SIERRA: This is one of those spats that sometimes end up being resolved on a TV court show. While entertaining for the audience, it can be heartbreaking for both parties and can end the friendship. There is, of course, no proof that will convince your friend that Chuckles didn’t have fleas back in March. She may not even accept the fact that it’s possible to pick up fleas or flea eggs while walking outdoors and bring them into the house, where they can hatch and then hop on board a pet’s fur. And now that flea and tick season is in full swing, what may have started out as a few fleas is now a full-blown infestation. I’m not a relationship therapist, but if you value the friendship, offer to compromise somehow. You might pay for half the cost of the flea treatment -- topical treatments can be pricey. You could purchase flea prevention products and offer to help apply them in and around her home -- with the promise that you’ll apply them to your home, too, as a preventative measure. In the meantime, doublecheck that Chuckles is flea-free. Comb through his hair and look for dark speckles or visible fleas near his skin. If there are certain spots that he scratches frequently, pay special attention. Even the most diligent cat mamas may deal with fleas at the height of the season. Learn more about flea prevention in my ebook, Fighting Fleas, available on Amazon. com. And send your flea prevention tips to ask@pawscorner.com.

How to Succeed at

Socially Distancing According to your Zodiac Sign Aries (Mar 21-Apr 19): You love a little competition. Try out a new fitness regimen, like the Couch to 5k program, and plan a future race or marathon. Taurus (Apr 20-May 20): Your home always looks great, but a little re-decorating never hurt anyone! Pro tip: take pictures of each room on your phone first to get an objective view of what you would like to change. Gemini (May 21-Jun 20): That good idea you’ve been sitting on? It’s time to come up with a stellar business plan. Don’t know where to start? Resist the isolating internet this time, and try emailing a local business leader you admire to set up a phone call – they would love to help, and the time to network is now! Cancer (Jun 21-Jul 22): You hate the idea of avoiding the people you love, but they understand and really do appreciate your thoughtfulness. Get close instead to the authors that inspire you. Copy out a paragraph you especially love, then give the story your own spin. Have your family do the same, then compare your creations! Leo (Jul 23-Aug 22): This is a time of opportunity for you. The stock market is on sale and you are not afraid to buy! Stay modest and share your passion for finance with the kids in your family by helping them set up virtual investment accounts through online games like Wall Street Survivor. Virgo (Aug 23-Sep 22): Your desire for organization is finally going to be satisfied! Make things more pinteresting by tapping into your creativity to develop some new DIY storage hacks. Marie Kondo has nothing on you! Libra (Sep 23-Oct 22): Your naturally social self will have to find expression in more creative ways. Start an initiative focusing on what can be done to help maintain the vitality of the small businesses in your area, like buying gift cards online or over the phone to use later on.

Isolation got you down? Here’s some fun suggestions on how you can help

“flatten the curve” now! Scorpio (Oct 23-Nov 21): Everything is an argument nowadays! By sharpening your own debate skills, you might actually build bridges instead of burning them. Get started with a fun read like Mastering Logical Fallacies (Withey) before turning to the prisoner’s dilemma. Is it time for a career in politics? Sagittarius (Nov 22-Dec 21): Your professional success is borne of your energy and enthusiasm. Channel these traits into refreshing the space around your home, like a garden or deck. It might seem like slow going at first, but “it does not matter how slowly you go, as long as you do not stop” (Confucius). Your investment will be rewarded sooner rather than later. Capricorn (Dec 22-Jan 19): Staying at home for you means expanding your reach! Move out of your comfort zone and organize friends and family to write cards for residents of the local nursing homes. The joy of small, random acts of kindness will spread to all areas of your life. Aquarius (Jan 20-Feb 18): Your bunker is filled with nothing but sheet masks, foie gras and red wine. Good thing, too, because the Metropolitan Opera is offering “Nightly Met Opera Streams” for free every evening at 7:30pm at metopera.org. If you’re fancy and you know it clap your hands! Pisces (Feb 19-Mar 20): Now is the time to become the master chef you always knew you were! Make your meal plan, break out the cookbooks and get to it. Remember to take your time and enjoy the process. By offering to safely deliver meals to those in need, your culinary fame will only increase.

Discover The Human Touch In Hearing Technology

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Nighttime Visions and Vivid Dreams ---

Lakeville 3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2 Henrietta 20 Finn Road, Suite C

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an extremely healthy 76-year-old woman. Almost every night, I am startled awake by visions of people standing over my bed. It’s usually once, but can happen up to three times in a night. It’s often after being asleep for an hour and a half. They’re not dreams. Something wakes me up, and that is when I see a man or a couple or a child standing around my bed or attempting to jump onto the bed. Though it lasts only seconds, my heart hammers and I jump out of bed to chase “them” away, and even checking the door locks. Then I sort of come around and pretty much laugh at myself. As it’s quite frightening, I believe I shout out, and it takes me a bit to calm back down. I take NO prescription drugs nor sleep-inducing medicine. Why am I experiencing this? What actually wakes me up to see these visions? Otherwise, I sleep very well. I would greatly appreciate your insight or any advice as to who I might talk with about it. -- Anon. ANSWER: I hesitate to tell you, but what I am concerned about most is a condition called dementia with Lewy bodies. This is not Alzheimer’s disease. In fact, the earliest symptoms are usually visual hallucinations. If you read this account (https://bit.ly/2Sk1Jzo), I think you may find some characteristics that sound familiar. What makes me doubt this diagnosis is that you report no confusion or memory problems. Although some people may have the hallucinations well before any thinking problems come up, they are in a minority. Wobbliness may go along with Lewy body dementia. Parkinson’s disease may develop visual hallucinations, but that is usually late in the course of the disease. This information can be shocking or depressing, but it is still important information for you to have. There is treatment for LBD. More importantly, there are medications that can make it MUCH worse. I would recommend you visit a neurologist and specifically find someone with expertise in dementia, as that is who is unlikely to miss this diagnosis. Unfortunately, it is not always recognized early. Here is some additional information to read about this condition: https://bit.ly/2BSdmYW. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been on hydrochlorothiazide for the past three weeks. Have you heard of vivid dreams associated with this medicine? I am having difficulty with it. -- L.G. ANSWER: Vivid dreams are not typically associated with hydrochlorothiazide. HCTZ does not cross the blood-brain barrier, so it wouldn’t be expected to have this effect. However, HCTZ often is given along with other medications that can have this effect, especially beta blockers, such as propranolol. If you are taking it as part of a combination drug, I would look at the other drug. Some medications are particularly well known for causing vivid dreams, and it is wise to tell people that before prescribing them. The HIV drug efavirenz can cause such vivid, and sometimes unpleasant, dreams that some people can’t take it. Statins, steroids, antihistamines and SSRI anti-depression drugs all are known to cause dream problems in some people. When I was given the antimalarial drug mefloquine, I had no idea that it was known to cause vivid dreams until I woke up the morning after taking it wondering what had happened. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. HOROSCOPES ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your Aries selfesteem level is high, as is your impatience to see more action come your way in the workplace. Good news, Lamb: It could start to happen sooner than you think. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Changing things now could upset a lot of people. But if you feel you’re acting because you believe it’s the right thing to do, others will understand and even come to support you. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A change of mind might not necessarily be a change of heart. You still want to go ahead with your plans, but you might see a better way to make them happen. So go for it. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) An old business dispute could re-emerge and possibly affect upcoming negotiations. Consider opening up the situation to include suggestions from others on both sides of the issue. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Some Leos and Leonas might find it somewhat difficult to get their ideas accepted or even considered. But that’s only for a while. Things will soon return to the way you like them. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) The pace seems to be slowing down from the hectic on-the-job run you recently enjoyed. But be assured that you’re still in the race to pick up new workplace-related goodies. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Seasonal changes create opportunities for busy Librans. However, be sure to balance your workload with your personal life so that you don’t overdo it on one end or the other. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A former critic could make a surprise turnaround and become a supporter. But if your Scorpion sense suspects a questionable motive, who are the rest of us to doubt it? SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Data on a new project seems less than dependable. But it might turn out to be just the opposite. Consult with someone who knows how you might best be able to check it out. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Capricorneans face many decisions this week, with the Sea Goat’s kids rating high on the consideration scale, especially regarding vacations and upcoming school matters. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Showing that you care is what Aquarians do so well. It’s your very special skill. And this week, you’ll have several chances to show off that gift for a very special person. Good luck. PISCES (February 19 to March 21) That streak of Piscean wariness should serve you well this week should you be among those who come up against a slippery character offering a fishy deal with nothing to back it up. BORN THIS WEEK: You have an artist’s sense of how to help others see, as you do, the beautiful things about the world. © 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

DECOR IDEAS TO GIVE HOMES A FRESH LOOK THIS SPRING

My name is

ACCENT FEATURES: Sometimes the smallest changes to an interior space make the biggest impression. Replace dated accents like vases and table lamps with newer items that reflect the latest styles and trends. Such adjustments won’t break the bank, and they can give rooms a whole new feel.

Savanna Mae. I turn 13 on July 19th this summer and live with my mom and Grammy. I’m their precious baby girl. I was first featured in “Pet of the Week” on Nov. 6th, 2011. I like to jump up on my 92-year-old grammy’s recliner and lay with her. She then has to climb over the arm of the chair to get out because she doesn’t want to disturb me. My Grammy also doesn’t get to read any more at night lately because I use my own personal set of stairs to climb up into her bed where I get up right next to her and get 15 min belly rubs both evening and morning. I’m spoiled beyond belief and am my mom and Grammys world, as they are mine.

GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS

York Central School

Speak up about your stress. As noted, stress at the workplace can affect workers’ performance, which employers are looking to optimize. Workers can speak to their employers if they feel their work environments are conducive to stress. Work in tandem with an employer to develop time-saving strategies that make it easier to get work done on time. Supervisors may encourage employees to delegate more often, freeing up time to get their work done. Employers may also direct employees to wellness resources that can help them more effectively combat stress. The outcomes of such discussions may never be known if workers never take the initiative and speak up about their stress.

Determine how much space you truly need. Current business owners and prospective owners can save substantial amounts of money and avoid wasting energy by giving ample thought to how much office space they truly need. Large office spaces may not be necessary for businesses that recently downsized staff, while those starting out may want to start in small spaces before upgrading to larger spaces if and when their businesses expand. Small business owners leasing their office space can speak with their leasing agents to determine if they can include a clause in their lease that allows them to move into larger spaces if the need arises before their existing leases expire.

EMPLOYMENT: THE NEXT STEP AFTER GRADUATION Hit the ground running. It’s tempting for recent grads to take the summer off and have a lax approach to job hunting after all of the hard work they put into their education. But recent grads can get a head start on their competition by beginning their searches immediately after earning their degrees. Create a list of a few target companies you have your eye on, and then tap into your network to find a contact at each company and reach out to that contact directly.

VOCATIONAL SCHOOLING CAN PAVE THE WAY TO HIGH-PAYING JOBS Many students believe that the next natural step after graduating from high school is to go off to college. Secondary education has become such a common transition that many parents begin saving for college tuition as soon as their children are born. Although college can be the next chapter in a student’s education, many teenagers still choose to attend trade school. Television personality Mike Rowe says the country is in the midst of a skilled labor shortage because workers lack the necessary training to fill the hundreds of thousands of available jobs. Lack of information may drive the notion that trade jobs are nothing more than a backup plan if college doesn’t pan out. However, by realizing that trade jobs, along with short-term vocational training, is a smart investment - and eventually a lucrative career choice - attitudes about trade schools and laborintensive jobs may shift. A great number of college graduates enter the workforce with degrees that may not help them land jobs. And these students typically carry thousands of dollars in tuition debt. Many college grads are underemployed and working in jobs that aren’t even in their fields of study. Career and technical schools help students develop specialized skills that make graduates immediately marketable in their chosen fields, and trade salaries can be very competitive.
