Let Dad sleep in. Chances are Dad is enamored with his little bundle of joy, but it’s well-known that being a new father often means sacrificing sleep time - especially for the first several months to a year of that child’s life. Enlist the help of a family member who can be on baby watch while Dad gets to sleep in on the weekend of his big day. With some extra sleep, Dad can enjoy Father’s Day that much more.

HOMETOWN

Kate Crowley Candidate for Canadice Town Board I would like to introduce myself as the newest Town Board member and to ask for your support at the upcoming Republican Caucus. The caucus is June 22, 7:00pm; at the Canadice Highway Facility on County Rd 37. I have served on the Board since November when Mark Malmendier announced his departure from the board after serving the Town for many years in various capacities. Growing up in Farmington I served on the Agricultural Committee assisting in drafting and codifying the Town’s Right to Farm Life Law. While living in Victor I served on the Conservation Board 10 years as board member and as Chair. I’m a relatively new resident in Canadice, living here since 2005, and am a member of the Honeoye Valley Association; I served briefly as a Planning Board member before moving to the Town Board. Small, rural towns like Canadice require balance between affordability, keeping reasonable tax rates, and maintaining and developing infrastructure that residents desire. I bring demonstrated financial stewardship from my role at University of Rochester as IT Finance Director for 10+ years. I look forward to the anticipated work with town representatives to update the Comprehensive Plan and to ensure that Canadice budgets and operations are well managed. I also look forward to meeting and hearing from Town constituents as we return to “normal activities.” Feel free to reach out to me if you have questions or comments and again, I welcome your support. DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I love my two fluffy cats, “Jake” and “Manny,” even though I am allergic to the dander in their fur. Antihistamines help, but not completely. Would an air purifier help keep the air clear? -Jemma G. in Kansas City, Missouri DEAR JEMMA: An allergy to pet dander can be tough to keep under control -- so much so that some pet owners give up their pets. I’m so glad you’ve kept your family together. Pet dander is generally underneath a dog or cat’s coat, near the skin. They shed fluffy bits of fur almost constantly, and dander is carried off with that fluff. Because dander can be tiny -- 75 microns or smaller, which isn’t visible to the naked eye -- it’s hard to isolate and get rid of. An air purifier may help, but only if it’s the right one to trap dander. Get an air purifier with a HEPA filter -- one that can be changed easily. HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filters trap particles as small as 0.5 microns. Avoid “ionizing” air purifiers as these don’t trap as many dander particles; plus they can be expensive. The size depends on how much of your home you’d like the air purifier to work in; for example, desktop-sized units have a range of less than 200 square feet, which makes them ideal for desks or next to your bed. No single strategy will reduce dander or other allergens. Tackle the issue from multiple angles. Dusting and vacuuming the house frequently can reduce dander, and brushing your cats’ hair daily will reduce extra shedding. If these activities trigger allergies, consider wearing a filter mask and goggles to hopefully reduce the reaction.

HOW TO KEEP DOGS SAFE AND CONTENT Socialize the pet. Learning how to respond to other dogs and people is an important aspect of canine life. If the pet is to get along with other dogs, it needs to have high exposure to other animals every day and in various scenarios. Socialization can begin as soon as a puppy is immunized and able to venture out with others.

Lois Mary Haywood May 24,2021 Springwater: Lois Mary (Mehlenbacher) Haywood, 89, of Hartwell, GA, passed away peacefully in her home on Monday, May 24, 2021. Born October 4, 1931, Lois was preceded in death by her parents, Earney and Arietta Mehlenbacher, husband, Bruce D. Haywood, and daughter, Donna Jean Haywood.

Shirley A. Gibson June 2, 2021 Wayland/Springwater-Shirley A. Gibson, 90 years of age, passed away early Wednesday morning June 2, 2021 at Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse, with her loving family by her side. Shirley was born May 14, 1931 in North Cohocton, NY, the daughter of Leo and Mildred (Montanye) Wixom. She grew up in the North Cohocton area. Shirley and Roy Gibson entered into marriage, April 1, 1951 at the Atlanta Presbyterian Church. Together they celebrated over 69 years of marriage prior to Roy passing away July 2, 2020. Shirley and Roy resided the majority of their lives together on their potato farm in East Springwater. For the several years during retirement they spent a portion of their time residing in North Fort Myers and Lauderdale by-the-Sea, Fl. Shirley was such a gentle, sweet, giving woman. Her greatest joy was her family, grandchildren and friends. She worked side-by-side with Roy, keeping the farm business running smoothly. Shirley always dressed for every occasion with all the accessories. She enjoyed having family gatherings, Spud Lake, snowmobiling and ocean walks. She was best known for her amazing pies, including her award-winning grape pie. Shirley had also been a life-long member of the Atlanta Presbyterian Church. Shirley was predeceased by her parents, Leo and Mildred Wixom; her husband, Roy Gibson Sr.; and her sister Phyllis Bill. She is survived by her children, Linda (Michael) Erb of Tulsa, OK, Robin ( John) Katko of Camillus, NY, Jennifer Gibson (Meg DeSomery) of Provincetown, MA, and Roy Jr. of Camillus; 3 grandchildren, Sean (Kristina), Logan and Liam Katko; her brother, Leo (Barbara) Wixom of OH; along with nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Camillus Ridge Terrace and the Upstate Neurology ICU for their loving and compassionate care. Shirley’s family and friends called Sunday, June 6, 2021 from 11am12pm at St. George-Forsythe Funeral Home, 109 West Naples St., Wayland. Shirley’s funeral service was held Sunday at 12pm at the funeral home. Interment and committal prayers took place at Clearview Cemetery in N. Cohocton immediately following. Contributions in memory of Shirley A. Gibson may be made to Onondaga Audubon Society, PO Box 620, Syracuse, NY 13201. Please visit www.stgeorgefuneralhome.com for online condolences. She is survived by her sister, Jean (Ray) Robertson of Potsdam, NY; six children, Bruce (Lilli) Haywood, Gail (Anthony Casciani) Glassbrook, David (Sarah) Haywood, Ernest (Wendy) Haywood, Raymond Haywood, Gloria Mosholder and honorary daughter, Mary Jane Robinson. She was known as “NaNa” to her grandchildren, Beth (Don) Lynch, Vikki ( Jeff ) Hussain, Wayne (Melissa) Glassbrook, Scott Glassbrook, Jill (Scott) Glassbrook-Wilson, Lynsey (Matt) Oliver, John David Haywood, Diane Haywood, Mark Haywood, Matt (Breana) Haywood, Christopher (Ashley) Haywood, Nicholas (Amanda Paul) Haywood, Benjamin (Elizabeth Kissner) Haywood, Gloria Kaitlyn Haywood, Ronald Mosholder; and 15 greatgrandchildren, Dylan, Zachary, Piper, Joshua, Olivia, Theodore, Lydia, Abigail, Riley, Benton, Quinn, Zander, Talia, Annabelle, and Evelyn and served as a community grandmother to countless other children in the neighborhoods in which she volunteered, taught, and tutored. Born in Hornell, NY Lois raised her family in Springwater, NY as members of the Springwater United Methodist Church where she was an active citizen. Neighbors may fondly recall the exuberance with which Lois shared her many talents, bringing the town to life with the Springwater Jr. Band. Under Lois’ tutelage, on hot summer evenings the band could be heard practicing on School Street preparing for their showcase in the Firemen parades. Regardless of their talents, or lack thereof, she had a way of making sure everyone had a place in the band, and as a result, the band brought home many trophies. Lois deeply believed in her role as an active citizen, informally “adopting” neighbors and friends into her family of “Happy Haywoods.” She held pivotal roles in the community including being a proud mother, forever student and learner (earning her Bachelor’s Degree late in life from Nazareth College), was a scout leader, and sought public service through elected roles. In addition to being the first woman elected to the town board, Lois taught Sunday school classes at the church, volunteered at the fire department, was a founding member of the Springwater Volunteer Ambulance, was a member of the Ladies’ Auxiliary, and spread her creativity as the owner of the florist in town, “Flowers by Lois.” Both fun-loving and hard-headed, Lois believed in grabbing each day by the horns and living her life to the fullest. In the 90s, Lois relocated to Hartwell, GA where she proved to be a vibrant and active member of her new community. She was active in the church, put her degree to work becoming an educator and tutor for local families, and continued her own journey to expand her community by becoming a certified truck driver. Known on the road as the “Silver Lady,” Lois found her place in a man’s world by sharing her stories from the cabin of her big rig and proving that you are never too old to learn something new, and that each day can bring a new adventure if you let it. Knowing that even in death she could be helpful to others, Lois donated her remains to science. The family will hold a private graveside service at a date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, those seeking to remember Lois are invited to make a donation to their favorite charity in her memory.

Hunting was a favorite as well, however it did not matter if he was successful with the hunt. The important part was being outdoors and the comradery with the guys. Throughout the years, Roger was also active with the Nunda Fire Department. Roger was predeceased by his parents, Roger and Winnie Rawleigh; and a sister, Deb Rawleigh. He is survived by his wife, Barb Rawleigh of Wayland; his sons, Travis, (Diana) Rawleigh of Nunda and Jess (Lili) Rawleigh of Rochester; his grandchildren, Alexis, Kyrstin, Kristopher and Kacey; his sister, Karen (Carm) Riviera of Nunda; his step-children, Heather Glover of Dansville, Trisda Hough (Will) Delmater of Atlanta, Anastasia Marshall of Cohocton, Austin McIntosh of Wayland, Tyler McIntosh (Ashley Goyco) of NE; his step-grandchildren, Ceairra, Trinity, Quin, Xander, Aydian, Harper, Makenna and Jillian; along with nieces and nephews. Roger’s family and friends may call Saturday from 11am-2pm at St. George-Forsythe Funeral Home, 109 West Naples St., Wayland. Roger’s funeral service will take place at 2pm at the funeral home. Committal prayers and interment will take place immediately following at Valley View Cemetery in Avoca. Contributions in memory of Roger L. Rawleigh may be made to the Vincent House, 310 Second Ave., Wayland, NY 14572. Please visit www.stgeorgefuneralhome.com for online condolences. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Although inevitable, death is an emotional subject that’s difficult to discuss. While estate planning can make people uncomfortable, it is an essential part of securing assets for future generations and can make a death in the family easier for loved ones to handle. Estate planning is an umbrella term that refers to a host of things that must be done prior to a person’s death, including writing a will and even making funeral arrangements. Estate planning attempts to eliminate financial uncertainties and maximize the value of an estate, and allows men and women to state their wishes with regard to long-term healthcare and guardianship for their children. When done right, estate planning can prevent family feuds and ensure that the deceased’s estate stays in the hands of family rather than being relegated to the government. Estate planning can be a complex process, so men and women should seek help to ensure the process goes smoothly.

American Hotel of Lima Celebrates 101 Years BY SCOTT WURTZEL

T

he importance of the American Hotel of Lima is felt immediately when walking up to it; it is almost as though the building refuses to be ignored. Walking into the hotel is almost like walking back in time. From the dining room, to the taproom, and back to the front office, one can feel the amount of care put into the hotel. The front office is a host to many historical items: a pre-civil war desk from 1840, a cash register from 1894, and paintings on the wall gifted to the family in 1908. The hotel is owned and run by Pat Reynolds, who took over from his parents in 1992. The business has continuously operated since 1920 when it was started by Reynold’s grandfather. Last year, in the midst of COVID, the American Hotel celebrated its centennial anniversary. One may wonder what has changed since Pat Reynolds took over nearly 30 years ago. “Quite a bit,” stated Reynolds. “The menu has changed. We do a lot more soups, and we have added a number of items that we didn’t have on the menu before. The clientele is an older crowd compared to people in their 20’s or 30’s.” The American Hotel does have rooms available, but its main focus has been its food. “We came into our own with the soups in the 80’s, when my sister, Rose, joined the crew. Before that, historically, my grandfather served three meals a day, breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Then in the 40’s, we switched to just lunches. Finally, in the 70’s and 80’s, we started serving lunch and dinner.” Since the pandemic started, the American Hotel has still been able to operate. “My favorite thing to tell is that we have been here 101 years, so since 1920, we have seen prohibition, depression, WWI, Spanish flu, WWII, Vietnam, 9/11. We have been through a lot of things, so when COVID hit, we looked American Hotel Owner, at what we needed to do,” Pat Reynolds, stands behind the Reynolds explained. “We desk in his office! basically furloughed our staff, and my sister and I kept it going with takeout service for the first 10 weeks of COVID.” How did the community respond? “We had a lot of support from loyal customers,” said Reynolds. “My favorite story was that the first day we were open for just takeout only, a gentleman came in from the community and bought a hundred-dollar gift certificate. Curiously, we asked him who would be the benefactor of the gift certificate, and he said, “Oh I don’t know yet.” That told me that he basically gave us a hundred dollars to keep us going, whether it’s ever used or not.

The stately American Hotel gives visitors a sense of historic grandeur.

Even to those visiting for the first time, it is apparent how important the hotel is to Lima. “In all modesty, I have been told by others that we are kind of an anchor for the community, an attraction to the community,” Reynolds said. “It’s an important part of the community, and since we have been here so long, it adds a lot to it too. We’ve got a good reputation and have kept it all these years.” Reaching 101 years is no easy accomplishment, so what has kept this business going? “It’s our determination,” Reynolds stated. “My grandfather came over from Ireland in the late 1800’s. He was in New York City for 20 years, working at a restaurant there. He worked his way up to a manager in the kitchen. Then, he came here to Lima and bought the hotel.” “I was born and raised here, so it’s a labor of love,” Reynolds concludes. “Also, I think it’s due to the good work ethic that we all have.” Enjoy this article? SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Fighting Back Against Rising Food Prices This week I scored a grocery discount of $5.21, plus over $6 in free groceries by using the store coupons. Added to that was $12 in free items I took to the local food bank. All of this is because I signed up for another grocery store’s customer loyalty card. It took a few weeks, but eventually the store’s computer figured out my favorite brands and items I routinely purchased, and turned those into discount coupons. It included free items to get me to sample different brands. And then there’s the food bank donation. It feels good, when you’re only a short step from needing that service yourself, to be able to give to those who have even less. The free items offered by the grocery store coupons can help beef up the supplies they have at the food bank, and in some cases might even be treats for those who can’t afford them. I thought about that when I grabbed the mega oversize candy bar offered with a free coupon: Somebody’s kids might not have had sweets in a very long time. And then there are our own pantries. For so long stores couldn’t get certain items. Once those were in stock again, some of us grabbed several extra, just in case. Now some of those items are once again not in stock, but for the most part they are. And now we have extra in our kitchen cabinets. It’s time to look at expiration dates and consider the reality: Will we really use up four boxes of pasta in the next month before they expire? If not, perhaps they could be donated to the food bank. If grocery prices are going to keep rising and rising, this is one way to fight back. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

TYPES OF TISSUE YOU CAN DONATE

Depression is a mood disorder that causes persistent feelings of sadness and loss of interest. The Mayo Clinic says depression can produce a variety of symptoms and affect the way a person thinks, acts and feels. Symptoms may include changes in sleeping patterns, anxiety, fatigue, weight gain or weight loss, unexplained aches and pains, and difficulty concentrating.

Skin: Every day burn victims benefit from donors who have chosen to donate their skin. Skin grafts treat people with serious burns by stopping infections and reducing scarring and pain. MTF Biologics also notes that donated skin tissue helps reconstruct the breasts of women following mastectomy procedures.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a daughter (almost 31 years) who is concerned about Charcot-MarieTooth syndrome. Her maternal grandmother has been diagnosed with that condition. She is interested in seeking out a genetic test for the condition to learn if she is susceptible. She was referred to a commercial, direct-to-consumer laboratory for the test. How likely is it that a lab test for this specific condition would be accurate? Should she be doing all of this through either a particular type of genetics counselor or her private physician (internist) rather than an independent effort? -- R.C. ANSWER: Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease is the eponym given to a family of hereditary motor sensory neuropathies: diseases that affect the nerves that carry the impulses necessary for movement and sensation. The initial symptoms are most commonly weakness and atrophy in the feet, followed by similar problems in the hands and sensory changes. The diagnosis may be made by EMG testing (electromyography, a needle study of the electrical activity of the muscles), but genetic testing is another way of making the diagnosis. If her grandmother has a known mutation, then genetic testing is likely to give her confirmation of her own status. Commercial genetic testing is certainly available, and probably accurate. However, I would still recommend a visit to a genetic counselor. This may require a referral from her primary-care doctor. The correct test to order, and its interpretation, depends on the exact diagnosis of her grandmother’s condition, since there are many genetic variations of Charcot-Marie-Tooth. It is likely that your daughter will have questions after the test results, and the benefit of having an experienced clinician there to answer them would be invaluable.

HOMETOWN PHOTOS

S E V RA Thank you! We want to give a huge Thank You to the gentleman who paid for our meals at Jo Andy’s on May 25th. We sincerely appreciate your kindness and will do likewise in the near future. May God bless you for your generosity! What a trip! Last Wednesday evening, I was taking my dog for a walk near my home in Corfu. My dog suddenly pulled me, and I tripped over him to avoid stepping on him. I fell off the curb and into the street, severely breaking both my wrist and elbow. A very kind neighbor, who happened to be a nurse, was driving and saw me fall. She stopped, and after assessing the situation, called 911. Before I knew what was happening, more neighbors were there to help as well as the police and ambulance. Someone even took my dog home for me! It’s all pretty much a blur to me, but thank you so very much to all who came to my rescue!

Not a single thank you In response to a recent person looking for incontinence underwear: I did the best I could with what I no longer needed, and I dropped off perhaps a dozen packages to the site specified by the requester in phone calls, after driving dozens of miles in each direction. Later I called the intermediary who had actually posted the request to confirm that the person in need had received the items. Several calls and emails went out without a word in reply. I particularly urged several times that the ultimate recipient make sure they looked through all the open packages. Why? Because in one of the open packages I left an envelope inside with a $100 bill in it so the ultimate recipient could purchase more underwear. No answers at all. Not a single thank you. What to do? I live in a seniors apartment complex. We have a nosy, busybody who, if she hears something good or bad (but mostly the bad) can’t wait to spread it all over. That wouldn’t be so bad, but most of the time, what she is spreading is not true. She is just a mean and disgusting old biddy. What can be done with someone like this? Debt If you include the unfunded liabilities of medicare and social security, our national debt is over $100 trillion. How bad does it have to get before you agree social security, medicare, and medicaid (the biggest debt drivers) need to go away? Not cut, completely go away. Stop calling it “my social security.” It was never yours to begin with. Your grandparents survived just fine before Medicare/Medicaid. Nowhere in the Declaration of Independence nor the Constitution does it guarantee any standard of living or any length of life. Raising prices! I understand that prices are going up at pretty much every restaurant you go to due to the economy, but can these restaurants please update their websites and let people know about the increase! I ordered a pizza special from a local place. It said one price online, but when I picked it up it was actually $10 more! I’m all about helping out our local businesses, but I wasn’t happy about paying so much more than I thought. I probably would have gone somewhere else had I known.

RELOCATING FOR A NEW JOB

BUILD YOUR NETWORK TO LAND A NEW JOB

Inquire about relocation assistance. The Allied survey found that 63 percent of companies offered relocation packages. That’s a considerable perk, as moving can be expensive, especially for adults moving to different parts of the country. Asking about relocation expenses before being offered a job can be tricky, but some companies may mention such packages in their job ads or in their initial meetings with out-of-town candidates.

Update your résumé. Update your résumé as often as you deem necessary. Colleagues you’ve worked with in the past who are within your LinkedIn network may periodically view your profile, and an updated résumé is a great way to keep them abreast of how your career is going. If they can see what you’ve accomplished since you last worked with them, they might be more inclined to reconnect or recommend you for a job opening.

Research the job market. Look into the industries for the field you are considering. Is it the right time for success in this field? Industries tend to ebb and flow. The differences in compensation for males and females continues to draw the attention of politicians and gender equality advocates alike. The United States Department of Labor noted that, in 2015, the median weekly earnings for fulltime male workers increased by 2.2 percent from the year prior. During that same period, female earnings increased by just 0.8 percent. That latest data marks the third consecutive quarter that the increase in males’ earnings doubled that of females. On average, women who work fulltime earn 81.1 cents for every dollar men earn. Women aware of that unfair gap in pay may feel helpless to address it with their bosses out of fear of being seen as unappreciative or selfish. In fact, addressing compensation makes many workers uncomfortable, regardless of their gender. According to a salary survey from PayScale, almost 60 percent of male and female workers do not ask for a raise. Negotiating salary increases requires finesse, timing and being informed. It also requires a certain measure of gumption. EMPLOYMENT
