Few drivers w ill be fortunate enough to go their entire driving lives w ithout encountering at least one flat tire. Flat tires range from the inconvenient flats, w hich may interrupt a road trip or make drivers late for w ork or an appointment, to more dangerous blow outs, w hich can compromise the safety of drivers, their passengers and anyone else on the road w hen the tire gives out. But as inconvenient or dangerous as flats or blow outs can be, they also can be prevented more often than not. Tires often produc e w arning signs that a flat or blow out is about to emerge, so drivers w ho w ant to avoid such unfortunate developments can inspect their tires for the signs.

COMMON TERMS FOUND ON FOOD LABELS Dietary fiber: The Mayo Clinic notes that dietary fiber refers to the parts of plant foods that the human body cannot digest or absorb. Andy Webster Brings the Walden Project to the Finger Lakes By Amanda Dudek

S

pending the academic year in the woods while earning seven high school credits was a dream that became a reality for several students last year. Inspired by the much-lauded Walden Project created by innovator Matt Schlein in Vermont, the Walden Project New York is only the second Walden Project in the country to date. This fulltime, year-away program is based on the work of Henry David Thoreau. The Walden Project offers high school and gap year students the opportunity to step away from society and think about the bigger questions of life. “The whole curriculum is based on Thoreau’s experience at Walden Pond,” explained Walden Project NY founder and former public school teacher, Andy Webster. “Experiential and very much about self-directed learning, it is driven by three guiding questions: What is my relationship to myself? What is my relationship to my culture? What is my relationship to the natural world?” These complex questions provide the framework for meaningful learning through discussion, reflection and authentic experiences. Walden Project’s (NY’s) curriculum is comprised of six 6-week units: A Sense of Place, Self-Reliance, Social Justice, Economics, Environmentalism and Communication. Students earn 7 high school credits: English Language Arts, Math (Systems Thinking), Social Studies, Environmental Science, Health, Physical Education, and Applied Arts.

Students really connected with what we are doing. On Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, students walk a 1/4 mile uphill through the woods to a ring of benches around a campfire at Cumming Nature Center, owned by the Rochester Museum & Science Center. “We make coffee and tea over the fire,” said Andy. “Then we read from one of our primary texts - Walden Pond, Civil Disobedience and A Plea for Captain John Brown - beginning philosophical, dynamic, whole-group discussions that weave through science, history, literary elements, current events and last from 45 minutes to an hour and a half.” Other subjects are explored as well. “We use the Kamana program, among other things, for science,” Andy said. “Every students has a “sit spot” to which they return every day, developing a stronger sense of the patterns in nature and connect to the natural world.” “Students also participate in workshops which are framed by our six curriculum units,” Andy explained. “We provide 20-minute mini lessons that then branch off into more specific student interests.” Students develop their interests through independent research and service learning on Thursdays and Fridays. “Thursday is an indoor day,” said Andy. “Every student completes an independent research project on a subject of interest to them each 6-week unit, encouraging intrinsic motivation and natural curiosity.” On Fridays, students do 2017 - 2018 Walden NY taught by not return to Cumming. Andy Webster & co-teacher/Service Instead, students are sent Learning Coordinator, Janean Shedd. out to their respective placements for their service learning. “From Monday to Wednesday, we look at the problems of the world,”

explained Andy. “Then, students work with organizations to see how they are currently addressing real world issues.” These service learning projects revolve around the six units, as well. “In our Social Justice unit, for example, we see that society is not fair, and students feel that kind of anger that things are unjust,” Andy shared. “Service learning helps corral that energy and point it towards solving problems in the real world.” In addition, the Walden Project NY uniquely encourages divergent thinking. “We get away from one-size-fits-all education,” said Andy. “There is real value to convergent thinking, which involves narrowing down options to find the most likely possibility. The problem is that it is often the only kind we teach, neglecting divergent thinking, which involves creatively thinking of many possibilities. We encourage everyone to follow their genius.” While Walden Project is not a therapeutic program, it can be a very supportive program for those in need. “Students who are in therapy, feeling like misfits, dealing with anxiety, struggling with depression and feeling bad about themselves in school and those who have become apathetic may really blossom in this type of environment,” said Andy. “We have seen these same kids humming with excitement, happily showing off what they have accomplished because they are proud of themselves and their learning.” The 2018-2019 school year was Walden Project NY’s inaugural year. “Our nine, ‘pioneer’ students really connected with what we are doing, especially the service learning,” said Andy. “They became excited to learn more so that they could be even more involved, actively using the concepts they are learning to affect issues they care about.” There were no issues with credits transferring to the students’ various schools, and Walden Project NY will be accredited when it launches for 2019-2020. “We are currently enrolling for our September session right now,” said Andy. “We start right after Labor Day and continue into midJune. We are planning for 15-16 students, which would be ideal.” Last year, students participated in everything from harvesting maple syrup and growing their own food to studying watershed dynamics, creating portfolios and recording TedTalks. With one Walden Project NY student receiving a full scholarship to college from Walden and another becoming so invested in his service learning project that he now intends to pursue disaster relief as a career, Webster confidently declared Walden Project NY’s first year a success. To be interested in the changing seasons is a happier state of mind than to be hopelessly in love with spring. ~George Santayana

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Get your facts together and become familiar with them before you have to face up to that interview. The better prepared you are, the easier it will be to make that important impression. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) New information might warrant changing your mind about a recently made decision. Never mind the temporary confusion it might cause. Acting on the truth is always preferable. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Creating a loving atmosphere for those you care for could pay off in many ways. Expect to hear some unexpected but very welcome news that can make a big difference in your life. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Stepping away from an old and seemingly insoluble problem might be helpful. Use the time to take a new look at the situation and perhaps work out a new method of dealing with it. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You’re still in a favorable goal-setting mode. However, you might need to be a little more realistic about some of your aims. Best to reach for what is currently doable. The rest will follow. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A setback is never easy to deal with. But it could be a boon in disguise. Recheck your proposal and strengthen the weak spots. Seek advice from someone who has “been there and done that.” LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Coming up with a new way of handling a tedious jobregulated chore could lead to more than just a congratulatory memo once the word reaches the “right people.” Good luck. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) What you might call determination, someone else might regard as stubbornness. Look for ways to reach a compromise that won’t require a major shift of views on your part. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You’re still in a vulnerable mode vis-a-vis “offers” that sound too good to be true. So continue to be skeptical about anything that can’t be backed up with provable facts. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Thrift is still dominant this week. What you don’t spend on what you don’t need will be available for you to draw on should a possible (albeit temporary) money crunch hit. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Staying close to home early in the week allows for some introspection about your social life. Sort out your feelings before rejoining your fun-time fellows on the weekend. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) It can be a bit daunting as well as exciting to find yourself finally taking action on a longdelayed move for a change. It helps to stay with it when others rally to support you. BORN THIS WEEK: Your love of home and family provide you with the emotional support you need to find success in the outside world. While many people visit yard sales looking for antiques or other unique items that likely can’t be found at traditional retailers, yard sale shoppers should know that their efforts can be great for the environment. Shoppers can browse through gently used items that no longer serve utility for the seller but may be just what buyers are looking for. Rather than throwing out belongings that get little use, people who organize a sale are reducing their contributions to nearby landfills.

Lutein and zeaxanthin are believed to block blue light from reaching structures in the retina, thereby reducing a person’s risk of developing macular degeneration. In fact, studies published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, the American Journal of Ophthalmology and The Archives of Ophthalmology found that diets high in lutein and zeaxanthin are associated with a lower risk of macular degeneration, which the American Macular Degeneration Foundation notes is the leading cause of vision loss in the United States.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I get all of my medicine by mail. Since the manufacturers stress keeping the pills at cool room temperatures, I wonder what the excessive heat does to them. The medicine must cook all day in the mailbox -- way over 100 degrees here in Florida. I wonder how much the pills or liquids are deteriorating, and how the effectiveness is influenced. -- F.N. ANSWER: You are right to be concerned. All medicines should be stored in a cool and dark place, as direct sunlight and heat can damage their effectiveness. Hormones, such as oral contraceptive pills, thyroid hormone and insulin, are among the most sensitive. Nitroglycerine is as well. Although some are shipped in packaging with cold packs and insulation, that’s not always the case. I recommend using a local pharmacy, but many people have prescription plans that require them to use mail order. If that’s the case for you, try to make sure the medicine will be delivered when you are available to receive it. If you have a temperature-sensitive medicine, such as the ones I mention above (ask your pharmacist about others), ask your mail-order pharmacy to send it in special packaging during warm-weather months.

HEMP HAS SIGNIFICANT HEALTH BENEFITS FOR PETS (NAPSI)—NaturVet’s veterinarian-formulated pet supplements have progressed over the last 25 years to keep up with the ever-changing needs of pet parents. NaturVet’s newest Hemp for Health product line includes four top products—Allergy, Calming, Immune and Joint— that are now available enhanced with Hemp Seed Oil and Hemp Seed Powder, sharing the same great original base formulas that pet parents have relied on for years. Although marijuana and hemp come from the same cannabis family, the plants are completely different in function, cultivation and application. Hemp is grown specifically for agricultural purposes and has been used for hundreds of years in textiles, body care products, paper products, industrial products and building materials. Most importantly, hemp is nonpsychoactive and cannot get your pet high. Hemp has significant health benefits for pets. Hemp is high in fiber; a great source of plant-based protein; is rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids; and contains phytonutrients, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and 20 amino acids. Hemp Seed Oil and Hemp Seed Powder work synergistically with other active ingredients to help provide support for allergies, stress and anxiety, joints, aches and discomfort, the immune system, and overall health and wellness. surgery two years ago. Post-surgery complications included diabetes, pneumonia and renal failure. I spent approximately three months in intensive care. After discharge I started physical therapy, as my arms and hands had atrophied. I am still doing therapy, but continue to have limited use of my arms and hands (I cannot curl my hands without force). Any insight you have as to why I am unable to use my hands would be appreciated. -- C.M. ANSWER: Muscle weakness is common after an ICU stay (it’s seen in more than 25 percent of patients), due to several separate causes. Prolonged immobility can lead to weakness, atrophy and even contractures (involuntary bending at certain joints, such as the elbow and ankle). Both critical illness myopathy (affecting muscles; it’s common in people who received steroids, like prednisone) and critical illness polyneuropathy (affecting nerves; it’s common in people with severe infection, like sepsis) can lead to weakness and atrophy. Medications are sometimes needed to paralyze muscles in surgery or in critical illnesses, and these can have long-lasting side effects, including weakness. Malnutrition is common in ICU patients, not because ICU doctors and nurses don’t know to or don’t want to feed patients, but because the body may be unable to absorb necessary nutrients. Some or all of these may combine to leave lasting physical effects from a long ICU stay. Physical and occupational rehabilitation services are the key to the recovery of function. Return of physical strength is slow and may be incomplete, so it may be necessary to use aids and to learn new ways to perform tasks. It has been my repeated experience that almost everyone can benefit from therapy, and patients who work harder, are more driven and are more optimistic tend to have the best results. Although most benefit is seen in the first year after loss of function, you still may continue to improve with therapy, perhaps utilizing different modalities. Definitely seek an occupational therapist if you haven’t already. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available. In the spring, at the end of the day, you should smell like dirt. ~ Margaret Atwood, “Unearthing Suite,” 1983

A LASTING TRIBUTE TO AMERICAN SOLDIERS (NAPSI)—More than 30 million Americans have served in the United States Army. If you or someone you care about is among them, you can now order a personalized, commemorative brick that will be permanently placed along the pathway to the future National Museum of the United States Army. Making a Museum The National Army Museum is rapidly taking shape at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, just south of Washington, D.C. This national landmark will be the first museum to tell the entire history of the nation’s oldest and largest military service. The massive 185,000-square-foot building will display a collection of Army artifacts, historic documents, and Soldier artwork. The vast majority of these priceless selections have never been seen by the public.

“For those who served, the Museum will provide a place of reflection,” said retired Army Chief of Staff, General Gordon R. Sullivan, chairman of the Army Historical Foundation. “For the rest of America, it will be an educational institution that conveys American history through the eyes and stories of Soldiers, teaching our nation how the U.S. Army has shaped nearly every major event in our country’s history.” In the two years since groundbreaking, the building’s frame has been completed, and crews have installed the stainless-steel panels that make up its exterior. Inside, the circular walls of the 300-degree Army Theater are set, and four of the Museum’s largest artifacts are in place. How You Can Be a Part of It The U.S. Army designated the nonprofit Army Historical Foundation to lead the campaign to build the Museum. The Foundation developed the Commemorative Brick Program to raise funds for construction and offer serving Soldiers and Army veterans and their families a way to forever be part of the historic national landmark. The personalized bricks are currently being installed along the pathway leading to the Museum’s main entrance. Made of Mesabi Black granite, the impressive tributes will set the stage for the Museum experience. Individuals and organizations can still order bricks at www.armyhistory. org/bricks. One of the benefits to becoming a skilled do-it-yourselfer is the chance to embrace projects that can breathe new life into objects that others might designate for the trash or donation pile. Renovating such items can save money and provide an entirely different purpose for the object. After upgrading design styles or moving, there’s a good chance the average homeowner has a spare dresser or chest of drawers he or she may no longer use. Repurposing such furniture can make for an enjoyable weekend DIY project. With a change of color, removal of drawers or a few minor modifications, dressers can be transformed in many different ways. Before discarding an old dresser, think of all the ways it can be transformed into another useful piece of furniture.

PREP-YOUR-PLACE POINTERS (NAPSI)—Many people may be surprised to learn that fall is actually the most affordable season for home prep and repair projects. There’s less demand, so homeowners enjoy breaks on equipment and services. An easy place to begin is at the window. Cracked and warped windows can often cause heat to escape. “Windows that produce a draft or feel cold on the inside should be replaced,” explains Richard Kasunic, a home repair expert with Window Nation, one of the country’s leading window replacement companies. Modern vinyl windows fit tightly to shield homes from wind, water infiltration and inclement weather overall. With that said, many homeowners have older windows and are often “heating the outside,” adds Kasunic. “On average, homeowners spend 40 percent of their utility expense dollars on heating and cooling,” he says. “But if new windows aren’t in this year’s home budget, you might want to pick up insulated curtains, window and door gap seals, and add draft snakes on windowsills.” He also suggests replacing the weather stripping around doors if you see any light around the edges. For less than $10, you can likely reduce electrical bills throughout the year. Beyond windows and doors, exterior outlets, plumbing and utility access, chimneys and walkways should be sealed for unwanted holes, says Kasunic. And homeowners should have their furnaces and roofs professionally cleaned and inspected. Finally, cover the water heater and change the furnace filter so your furnace doesn’t have to work as hard. If you are thinking of new windows, Kasunic agrees that this is the best time for both availability and price. Learn More: For further facts and advice, go to www.windownation.com. A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel

* On June 28, 1972, President Richard Nixon announces that no more draftees will be sent to Vietnam unless they volunteer for such duty. He also announced that a force of 10,000 troops would be withdrawn by Sept. 1, which would leave a total of 39,000 in Vietnam.

Is It Seasonal Allergies Or Dry Eye?

* On June 27, 1988, heavyweight champion Mike Tyson knocks out challenger Michael Spinks with a left hook in the first round. The match lasted just 91 seconds. * On June 24, 1997, Air Force officials release a 231-page report dismissing long-standing claims of an alien spacecraft crash 50 years earlier in Roswell, New Mexico. The UFO rumors began in 1947 when a rancher found shiny material scattered on his land. The Air Force said it was a downed weather balloon.

(NAPS)—Two of the more common eye-related problems are dry eyes and eye allergies. While the symptoms are similar, there are differences between the two conditions. Sometimes they can occur at the same time, compounding the problem. That’s why it’s important to have a medical eye exam to determine the cause of your symptoms so you can get the appropriate treatment. If you’re concerned about the cost of the exam, the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s EyeCare America program may be able to help. Understanding Allergies Seasonal eye allergy symptoms are like dry eye, but itchiness is more common. When you’re sensitive to an allergen such as molds, pollen, dust or grass, histamine is released, causing itchy, red eyes that tear or burn. Over-the-counter medications are often effective. You can also take the following steps for relief: • Limit exposure to the outdoors on high–pollen count days. • Wash your face and hands after being outside to reduce the amount of pollen on the skin. • Don’t rub your eyes; it may increase the irritants and make symptoms worse. Examining Dry Eye Dry eye is a complex disease that has many causes that often overlap and interact. Dry eye can happen when the eye doesn’t produce enough tears or when the quality of the tears can’t keep the surface of the eye adequately lubricated. It frequently occurs with other health conditions. People tend to make fewer tears as they get older due to hormonal changes. Both men and women can get dry eye. However, it is more common in women—especially after menopause. Common symptoms of dry eye disease may include sensitivity to light, dryness and itchiness, the feeling that something is in the eye, fluctuating vision, eye fatigue and excess eye watering. Ophthalmologists—physicians specializing in medical and surgical eye care—will prescribe a variety of treatments based on the cause of the dry eye. For many people, though, a few simple lifestyle changes can resolve the problem: • Try adding moisture to the air with a humidifier. • Protect your eyes from drying wind by wearing wraparound glasses outside. • Add omega-3 fatty acids to your diet for dry eye relief. These are in oily fish (such as salmon, sardines, tuna, trout and anchovies) and in flaxseeds. • Use artificial tear ointment or thick eyedrops just before you go to bed. If your eyes remain red and irritated after trying these tips, see your ophthalmologist. About EyeCare America EyeCare America is a national public service program that provides eye care through volunteer ophthalmologists for seniors 65 and older, and those at increased risk for eye disease. To see if you or your loved ones are eligible, visit www.aao.org/eyecareamerica.

DID YOU KNOW? Tipping men and women who work in the food service industry is commonplace in the United States and Canada, where citizens typically tip between 15 and 20 percent when dining out at restaurants. But American and Canadian travelers about to depart for overseas destinations may want to familiarize themselves with the practices regarding gratuities before their planes touch down. Some countries automatically add gratuities onto customers’ bills. For example, the government in Dubai mandates that a 10 percent service charge be added to all hotel, restaurant and bar bills. This service charge is then divided by the staff at the establishment, making the charge the equivalent of a tip. Diners in Morocco, where the gratuity is sometimes included in the bill, might be surprised to learn that a 10 percent tip in that country is considered generous. Tips are included in the bill in Costa Rica, where travelers need not feel obligated to leave any additional gratuities. Service is often included in the bill within the United Kingdom as well, though travelers should inspect the bill before assuming gratuity was included. Visitors to Spain should not feel obligated to leave a gratuity larger than 13 percent, and even a tip in the range of 7 percent is considered acceptable. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

sad I missed the pancake breakfast. Thanks to all the men and women who make up our fire department!

I’d like to thank the Springwater Fire Department. Not only do they do great work responding to all the calls and keeping us safe, but they also throw some amazing community events. They did a paint night that was awesome, a meat raffle that was a lot of fun, and the amazing comedy night. I’m With the nice weather finally upon us, people are enjoying sitting outside more and would maybe like to open their doors and windows to let the fresh air in. However, that is not possible because your dog is barking for hours on end! Please, please, please take your constantly barking dog inside! People do work nights and try and sleep with windows open but can’t because your dog is Always barking! Not to mention how this must affect your poor dog! Maybe your poor dog has some issues that you are ignoring. Obedience training would help as might a separation anxiety vest or medicine! Be a more responsible dog owner. We had to buy a “white noise” device, but it doesn’t help when we want to open the GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

New to the town and discovered we are surrounded by amazing people on all sides, including Yvonne Struble, Mary Markle and Nikki Zinter! All are wonderful, kind people who make us love this town more and more every day.

Dansville has many nice and wonderful people in it, and if you explore the right parts of town, it’s absolutely beautiful.

I LOVE the school system. Coming from a larger city where your child is a number to a community that cares and supports our children is amazing! I will never move out

Thank you, Jessica Delaney and her windows or doors! Your turn now to do what responsible dog owners do. At least help your dog so it isn’t barking all the time! Please! Some say those that are targeted with bullying must have mental health issues. Not necessarily. Many of the minors who do such illegal things as bringing guns to school have stated that they were targeted by bullies. Just because someone is angry doesn’t necessarily mean they have a mental health issue. Often, they are angry because they are suffering injustice. Everyone has a breaking point.

I hope he will be waiting for you some morning to give you a wakeup call. It is not okay to go speeding down the road. LIFE IS LOUD—BUT YOU CAN STILL ENJOY A QUIET HOME

585-657-4448

(NAPSI)—Home life is changing, so sound dampening is more important than ever. Life is getting louder inside and around the home. Televisions, home theaters, computers and video games blare from almost every room. Family cell phones ring or buzz. Life gets loud. So much so, in fact, that the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders says as many as 26 million Americans have high-frequency hearing loss likely caused by exposure to excessive noise. Excessive noise is also linked to tinnitus, sleep deprivation, cardiovascular disease and an increased risk of mental illness. A German study found that depression and anxiety increased as annoyance from noise increased.

EMPLOYMENT: THE NEXT STEP AFTER GRADUATION Hit the ground running. It’s tempting for recent grads to take the summer off and have a lax approach to job hunting after all of the hard work they put into their education. But recent grads can get a head start on their competition by beginning their searches immediately after earning their degrees. Create a list of a few target companies you have your eye on, and then tap into your network to find a contact at each company and reach out to that contact directly.

Fortunately, there can be a way to protect yourself and your family. Your home’s insulation can do more than keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. The right kind can help transform your home into a quiet retreat and sanctuary from the outside world. The next time you have the opportunity to reinsulate your home, soundproofing insulation can be an excellent choice to help you escape everyday noise. Stone wool insulation is a top choice for professional recording studios since it’s an excellent acoustic barrier that actually absorbs the sound. One, Rockwool Safe ‘n’ Sound stone wool insulation, is a performance-tested product that provides higher sound absorption against low-frequency (bass) ranges that other types of insulation struggle to block. In addition, it’s: • Easily cut • Noncombustible, with a melting point of approximately 2,150° F • Fire resistant • Not likely to rot or promote the growth of fungi or mildew • Water and moisture resistant. For great soundproofing results, you can install the stone wool insulation in your home theater, basement, home office, laundry room, furnace room and even the washrooms. Its high-density and unique fiber structure reduces noise traveling from one room to another. Learn More: For further facts, visit www.rockwool.com/products/safensound. EMPLOYMENT

Spring shows what God can do with a drab and dirty world. ~ Virgil A. Kraft

Where man sees but withered leaves, God sees sweet flowers growing. ~ Albert Laighton

ACHIEVE A BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE Establish your priorities. Make a list of the things that are most important to you. Having this list put on paper can make goals more attainable. Think about the main things you want to focus on in life and go from there. THE RIGHT WAYS TO UPDATE A RÉSUMÉ Put a professional purpose. Modern standards may suggest that listing a career “objective” is old fashioned. However, it is helpful to customize your résumé so that it is geared toward the position for which you are applying. A career objective may reflect how you are a strong candidate for each specific job you apply for. Use some specifics that tie into to the particular job or company and you may catch the hiring manager’s attention in the process.

On-Campus Custodial Job Fair is behing held 6/27 from 7:30am-11:30am in Brodie Hall at SUNY Geneseo. Applicants should come prepared with their resume and cover letter.
