NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Add a cinnamon stick or softener sheet to your vacuum bag when you change it. As you clean, you will distribute the good smell throughout your home. * To ripen a green tomato, wrap it in a sheet of newspaper or place it in a paper bag. It can then be left on the counter for several days to ripen. * “Need to remove fruit or food coloring stains on your hands or your countertop? White vinegar will clean it off. It’s good for so many things.” -- R.N. in Washington * “Instead of baking soda, I use three or four charcoal briquettes in a bowl to control odor and moisture in my refrigerator. I place the briquettes in a shallow dish, then cover the top of the bowl with a small piece of cheesecloth and secure it with a fat rubber band. The best thing is that I can still use these briquettes on the grill. In the summer, they get changed very regularly.” -M.L. in Virginia * Great ways to remove stuck labels: nail polish remover (NOT for use on plastics), WD-40 oil, soaking in hot water, rubbing alcohol. * Have a stained coffee pot, but don’t want to use a harsh chemical cleanser to scrub that stain off? For gritty cleaning power, try using a tablespoon of milk and a tablespoon of salt. The salt gives you scrubbing power, and the milk’s acids help gently dissolve the stains. FLOWERS, PLANTS AND GARDEN FRESH PRODUCE

DID YOU KNOW? Children have long been drawn to expressing themselves through art. According to developmental experts, coloring stimulates creativity, contributes to better handwriting, teaches color recognition, and can promote hand-eye coordination. Coloring books can help children learn to recognize boundaries and structure and develop spacial awareness. Adults, too, have recognized the benefits that coloring can bring, which includes stress reduction and improved focus. Crayons have long been a favorite tool for coloring, and over the years certain colors have emerged as fan favorites. Crayola® conducted polls in 1993 and 2000 to find out the most popular colors of crayons in America. Blue was voted the favorite both times. Six other shades of blue, including cerulean, midnight blue, aquamarine, periwinkle, denim and blizzard blue, finished among the top 10. Purple heart, caribbean green and cerise rounded out the top 10.

Remembering War Dogs

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: During Memorial Day week, I wanted to bring your readers’ attention to the service and sacrifice of the thousands of dogs who went to war with their soldiers. Many did not come home, because they either died during operations or were left behind. Please take a few minutes this week to remember these four-footed warriors -- Jim W., Chattanooga

President

........................... Steve Harrison

DEAR JIM: Request received! Thank you for calling attention to the sacrifices of military working dogs. The U.S. armed forces has had a military dog program since World War II. These canine warriors help detect mines and improvised explosive devices (IEDs), provide security on bases and much more. Between 2001 and 2013, over 2,600 “war dogs” were deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq. In that time, at least 92 are known to have died, the majority in combat. However, in all this time, there was no military-wide tracking system of its injured war dogs. How often were they injured or killed? What were their injuries like? How did they fare after their service? Data that would be helpful in treating other injured war dogs was being lost. In January, funding was passed for a Military Working Dogs Trauma Registry (for details, go to www.avma. org and search for “working dogs, combat injuries”). Veterinarians will be able to consult the registry to learn more about war dog combat injuries and better ways to treat them. Injured war dogs will have a better chance of survival. Retired dogs will be able to get more effective treatment for their wounds. This legislation is a huge, active step toward truly honoring the sacrifices of military working dogs and can help even more of them come home.

Meatloaf is a dinnertime staple for many families. A favorite of adults and children alike, meatloaf can be prepared however cooks see fit, making it a versatile dish for family dinners. Parents who want to enjoy meatloaf with their families and do so while promoting healthy diets can try the following recipe for “Turkey, Vegetable & Oat MiniMeatloaves with Marinara Sauce” from Michelle Dudash’s “Clean Eating For Busy Families” (Fair Winds).

Turkey, Vegetable & Oat Mini-Meatloaves with Marinara Sauce Serves 6 Expeller-pressed canola oil spray 1 8-ounce package crimini (baby bella) mushrooms (about 21/2 cups) 1 small yellow onion, cut into eighths 4 cloves garlic, minced 1 tablespoon extra-virgin oil 1 cup dry rolled oats 2 large eggs 1 pound lean ground turkey (or beef or bison) 13/4 cups pasta sauce, divided 3 tablespoons red wine vinegar 1 tablespoon Italian herb seasoning 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper Preheat oven to 375 F. Coat a 9 x 13-inch baking pan or 6 mini loaf pans with spray. Pulse mushrooms in a food processor until finely chopped and add them to a large bowl. Repeat with onion and garlic. Place a large frying pan over medium heat and add oil. When oil is shimmering, add vegetables and sauté for 7 minutes or until water releases and evaporates completely, lowering the heat as necessary. Set aside. Process the oats until they are of a fine consistency. Whisk the eggs in the bowl used for the vegetables. Add processed oats, turkey, 3/4 cup of pasta sauce, cooked vegetables, vinegar, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper and stir together with a fork until blended. Scoop the mixture into 6 mounds on the pan or into each mini-loaf pan, about 3/4 cup each. Shape each mound into a 4 x 2-inch loaf. Spread remaining 1 cup of pasta sauce on top of the loaves, distributing evenly. Bake on middle rack for 25 minutes, turning pan midway through cooking, until loaves are firm or a thermometer inserted in the middle reads at least 165 F. Allow loaves to rest for 5 minutes before serving. Recipe Notes: You can finely chop vegetables with a knife rather than using a food processor if you prefer. Whole oats can be added to the meat mixture for a more rustic texture. Page 9

Volunteering opportunities abound in big cities, but small town residents may not have as many options as they look for ways to give back. Small town residents looking to give back may need to create their own opportunities if the options available to them do not suit their fancies. Contact local schools. Teachers, afterschool caregivers and coaches can always use some helping hands. Contact local schools to determine if there is any way to help out. Prospective volunteers might be able to read to young children, serve as assistant coaches for youngsters’ sports teams or even help tend to playing fields. Small town school budgets tend to be stretched thin, so chances are local educators will welcome citizens looking to pitch in with open arms. Start a program through your place of employment. Another way for small town residents to give back to their communities is to begin a mentoring or internship program through their places of employment. Once their employers give the go-ahead, men and women can begin working with local high schools and/or colleges to develop programs that encourage youngsters to gain professional experience that can benefit them as they apply to college or graduate school or prepare to begin their own careers. Start a volunteering group. Small town residents without much access to volunteering programs can organize groups through their offices or neighborhoods. Organize groups willing to pitch in with charities such as Habitat for Humanity®. Group leaders can arrange transportation to work sites for members of the group while working as liaisons between their community groups and the organizations they choose to work with. Work with area hospitals. Similar to school districts, many hospitals would struggle to meet their missions of providing compassionate care if not for the contributions of volunteers. Contact area hospitals to learn about volunteering. Some may need volunteers to read to sick children, while others may need help keeping elderly patients company. Small town residents may not have a wealth of volunteering opportunities at their disposal. But with a little creativity, such men and women can still give back to their communities. HEALTHY COOKING TECHNIQUES A large part of healthy eating involves choosing the right foods. In addition to choosing the right foods, health-conscious individuals must choose the right methods to prepare those foods in order to maximize their nutritional value. Cooking methods such as frying can make for delicious meals, but such meals may not be so healthy. For example, each tablespoon of oil used when frying can add more than 100 calories to a meal. When counting calories, men and women should recognize that the way they prepare foods can affect the overall calorie count of a meal.

I go to a new doctor, there is always that past history form to fill out. I know to include current medications, including OTC and allergies, but how far back should I go? Should I include the tonsillectomy when I was in grade school (I don’t recall how old I was)? Or the surgery to remove a benign tumor from my right femur in 1955? The miscarriage in 1961? Or that the last of my five children was born over 40 years ago? I would include the surgery because my right leg is about 3/4 inch shorter than my left. After all these years, it causes a backache after standing too long. -- S.B. ANSWER: In general, doctors want all the information you can give. However, past medical history tends to become less important as people get older. I agree with you that the surgery on your femur is important: Even now, a leglength discrepancy may still benefit from being addressed. A small (half the discrepancy or less) adjustment to the shoe of your shorter right leg may help reduce your backache. If I were your new doctor, it would be important to me to know you had a 40-year-old son (and about the rest of your children), but that would be more to know who you are as a person. I also ask my patients to identify someone in their family who can help make decisions if you are unable to. That should be done formally, through a health care proxy designation, which is complementary to the advance directive that all adults should have. It’s a privilege for me as a primary care doctor to get to know my patients and follow them over years, sometimes many years. ***

HOMETOWN PHOTOS Vax “Rules” First of all, there are no “rules” within a community when it comes to vaccinating. Secondly, you have some nerve telling people to go into seclusion because of their choice to not take a vaccine that is not FDA approved and is only in its trial stages. If you’re vaccinated, then what are you afraid of? Supposedly, you are protected from the virus, so those of us who are unvaccinated should not be a threat to you. That was a very arrogant statement you made there.

S E V RA Kindness I want to thank the nice lady who helped my mother who is on a walker and myself on a cane, to get a beautiful fuchsia plant down at [local store] off [local road]. Neither myself or the young girl working in that department could reach the plant. This kind lady got it down for us, and we told her we wanted it to attract hummingbirds. It is nice to know that there are still kind and wonderful people out there to help others. Thank you so very much. And to the lady behind us in line complaining that we were slowing her up because she only wanted to pay for mulch: Maybe someday you will get older, and it will take you time to get your money out. I hope someone just like you is behind you in line! Maybe you should also apologize to your husband who you screamed at about us. Why can’t everyone be kind like the other lady was? Hats off to Nick! Hats off to Nick at UR Urgent Care in Spencerport! On Thursday night, I called the Urgent Care for my husband. Unfortunately, they were not opened. I left a message, and they said that someone would call back. With the holiday weekend approaching, I never really expected to hear back from anyone. I was quite surprised when the next morning, I received a call from Nick at Urgent Care. He called up to see what was going on and how he could help. He was kind, concerned, and very pleasant. I was impressed! In fact, after the initial call, he called again to ask me if I wanted to speak to a provider. In the stressfilled world we find ourselves in, sometimes people can unintentionally overlook things. This can be especially true with those in high profile occupations such as those in the medical environment. So, Nick making sure that he contacted me after hearing my message was quite a relief and truly appreciated by my family and I.

Vaccine Seclusion Vaccines have never been a part of any rules for living in a community. You must be living on Animal Farm where you come from. It appears as though the coronavirus hysterics are still alive and well. I’m not vaccinated. What are you going to do about that? I have not worn a mask nor social distanced since this whole pandemic kicked off, and I never once got sick. Boy, the petty, irrelevant garbage that people will concern themselves with never ceases to amaze me.

Whether to vaccinate Yes, it’s your body and your choice, but when you get infected, you risk the lives of all of those around you. I’m sure you’ll expect medical personnel to risk their lives and well-being to care for you. So, don’t get vaccinated, but please stay home when you become ill. No masks at the grocery store? I’ve read the statistics and know half the population is not vaccinated. Why then is no one wearing a mask in this heavily-trafficked public place? If you haven’t gotten your vaccine make the right choice and wear your mask!

Where Knowledge Grows 200 MAIN ST. • DANSVILLE, NY 14437 • 585.335.6720 Temporary Hours: Mon-Fri, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Sat. 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

June 2021 “Peek-a-Boo Pebbles June 4” This Friday, June 4th, 2021 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., kids and families can join Ms. Mary Ellen for “Rock the Garden” with Peek-a-Boo Pebbles crafters, Jessica Taranko and Amy Gardner. Families or “pods” can sign up for a table at the Library’s main desk TODAY. Peek-a-Boo Pebbles is a rock painting program that will be held on the library lawn. Check them out on Facebook at Peek-a-boo Pebbles and sign up at the Library right away! For more information, call 585-335-6720. “Summer Reading Kick-Off June 19th” On June 19th, 2021 at 10:00 a.m., Ms. Mary Ellen begins a variety of activities for children as part of the Library’s annual Summer Reading program with the Kick-Off event. Called “Chalk the Walk,” children and families will decorate the sidewalks that surround our lovely Dansville Public Library with their unique artistic creations. Family “pods” or family groups will be assigned a sidewalk block as their own unique canvas on which to celebrate books and reading and summer with their chalk drawings. To participate, please sign up at the Library prior to the event so that Ms. Mary Ellen knows how many will be attending. You can call us for more information at 585-335-6720. Be prepared with continuing COVID restrictions at Dansville Public Library by wearing your mask and maintaining safe social distancing. “Kids Read All Summer” Summer Reading activities will include “Grab and Go” bags participation. Please keep watch on Facebook for details. All summer, Ms. Mary Ellen will have several special activities on the Library lawn, and you will want to keep track on what’s happening when at the Library’s Facebook page. Be sure to “like” us and you will receive postings regularly. As always, call the Library for additional information anytime this summer at 585335-6720. “Successful Trustee Election & Budget Vote” Staff and visitors to the Library want to thank the voters for supporting our Library last month. Our annual vote was successful and Mary Ann Holden and Rhea Walker were re-elected as Trustees on Tuesday, May 11th for a four-year and a five-year term respectively. In addition, the budget for the 2021-2022 fiscal year beginning July 1st was approved. The three other members of the Board of Trustees are Bill Forsythe, Mary Harrington, and Sherrie Reilly.

“Fines Resume” COVID-19 permissions are gradually being lifted at our Library. Masks are still required, social distancing is still in effect and we appreciate your cooperation as we move forward. Library materials have been returning with a “fine forgiveness” automatically offered. But, on July 1st, the Library will resume the automatic process of “fines” on materials which are returned past the due date. What does the Library do with fines received? These are immediately deposited into the Book Fund to purchase more materials for you to borrow. Please note this information about renewals: if materials are NOT on hold for another borrower, the system automatically renews your materials, extending the due date, and this service has been in place even before the arrival of the pandemic. Remember, you can call to renew your materials though most are automatically completed. Again, for renewals to be activated, the items can’t be on hold for another borrower. Just continue to call us to tell us of your requests and needs, and we will continue to provide you with the best service possible. “Kids and Summer Reading” Our Summertime Story Time for our newest and youngest readers will be “virtual” every Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. on Facebook beginning June 19th. Our first program is “Color Splash” and additional information will be available soon. Ms. Mary Ellen invites our littlest readers to “attend” each week with their families. Meanwhile, Ms. Mary Ellen has planned other programs to be held on the Library lawn throughout the summer months. These include “Let’s Draw Together” under the big tree on the lawn where children can learn to draw animals using easy steps for younger artists; “Paws to Read” where children can schedule their own time to read to a therapy dog during which they will learn a few facts about Pet Therapy services; a few new “Story Stroll” books will appear during the summer months, please bring your readers and participate in each activity; come adopt a “Buddy” and help your child go on “Adventure Reading with a Buddy,” a fun activity and virtual reading program where each child can take a “buddy” home with whom the child can read and play. “Miscellaneous News” Keep watch in upcoming Genesee Valley Penny Saver news! We will be adding evening open hours as soon as we are able. We have requests from those who are looking forward to visiting later in the day, after they are home from work. As mentioned before, we are gradually easing previous COVID-19 restrictions. Slowly we will return to the new normal. The Library will be closed Monday, July 5th in recognition of Independence Day. It WILL be open on Saturday, July 3rd.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles What You Can Do About Rising Food Prices According to the Consumer Price Index, food prices from one year ago have gone up 3.3%. It’s not going to stop there. Non-food prices are going up as well, as companies struggle to find the raw materials and manpower they need to produce everything else. Fitness equipment, furniture, lumber, gas, electronics -- it’s all going up. What we have to be concerned with, however, is our most basic need: food. Even if you’ve never felt any urgency before, check into your local food bank. Keep the information handy, just in case you need it later. Look at store brands. Many are even better than the name brands. Make every dollar count. Sign up for a grocery store rewards card, if it’s available. Use a private throwaway email address, the one you use to sign up for things that might generate too much junk mail. You’ll likely get emails about sales with coupons. (At my store, I log in at the checkout and get cash back at the end of each quarter.) Look to your own vegetable garden or farmers markets as ways to save. If you want to do canning this summer, one heads up: Be certain you can get the jars, lids and rings at the same time. They might be in short supply. Freezing meals is another option and ensures that food is always available. Double a stew or soup recipe and buy in bulk when it makes sense to. Shop from a list to the extent you can, knowing that stores can be out of things you want. Consider having breakfast for dinner one night a week, and one meatless dinner. Plan meals around what’s on sale each week. It bears repeating: Find out about your local food bank. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

HOW TO SUPPORT BUSINESSES DURING MANDATORY RESTRICTIONS

HEALTH BENEFITS OF HONEY Substitute for refined sugar: Refined sugar offers little to no nutritional value and is full of empty calories. Heathline says that honey has bioactive plant compounds and antioxidants as well as trace amounts of vitamins and minerals. The antioxidants in honey, which include phenols and flavonoids, may help prevent cardiovascular disease, stroke and some types of cancer.

ORDER DELIVERY: It’s still possible to enjoy foods from your favorite local restaurants. Many restaurants that had not previously done so have begun to offer delivery services, be it curbside or at-home, and this can provide a great respite for families who have had to cook three meals a day at home for their entire families for extended periods of time. Curbside delivery has made it possible to get takeout meals without compromising social distancing recommendations.

Livonia Teacher named 2021 National High School Advisor of the Year Award by the National School Council BY AMANDA DUDEK

T

erry D’Imperio, student council advisor and leadership teacher at Livonia Middle/High School (Livonia MHS) in Livonia, NY, has been named the 2021 Warren E. Shull Advisor of the Year. The annual award is named for Warren E. Shull, the founder of National Student Council, and recognizes high school student council advisers of exemplary character, leadership and commitment to young people - particularly those who foster their development as student leaders. For 33 years, D’Imperio has guided the student council and demonstrated their mantra, “No one cares how much you know unless they know how much you care.” Actively involved in initiatives such as running blood drives, food drives, coat drives for local migrant workers, raking leaves, Toys for Tots, and annual charity fundraisers, members have developed a culture of service to the school and the community that has earned their council designation as a Gold National Council of Excellence. D’Imperio takes pride in the leadership development of her students, watching for those moments that reveal they’ve reached the next level - like when someone is able to run a meeting without looking her way. Another key benchmark: “When a student sees the potential and good in others and cultivates that, then I know they are a great leader,” she says. A passion for service and the character to lead are traits all good advisers instill. D’Imperio also ensures that her students understand the significance of being servant leaders. She loves to show her students a video on the principle of being The first follower, which highlights the importance of supporting those who are leading. In the tight-knit, school-oriented community of Livonia, student leadership has a major impact. Mindful of this, the council strives to run activities that bring the school and community together whenever possible, from penny carnivals and an enchanted pumpkin patch to an annual breakfast with Santa. Connection is a recurring theme in D’Imperio’s work, as evidenced by a leadership class project that directs students to “connect people together in some way.” Her inspiration for the class came after attending a workshop at her first National Student Council Conference. The class she developed was so impactful, her superintendent decided every student who passed through Livonia MHS should take it, giving way to Freshman Leadership. Under D’Imperio, the entire student body isn’t just represented, it’s called to participate. Weekly student council meetings are open to anyone to offer new ideas, and officers from each of the school’s clubs are invited to discuss their activities and fundraisers so efforts don’t overlap. Principal John Gammon says D’Imperio always empowers her students to be the best version of themselves while making a positive contribution to their school and community. “Through her work with students in the leadership classes, combined with her work as our student council advisor, Mrs. D’Imperio has nurtured a student-centered environment that continues to not only foster strong student leadership, but also builds school spirit that unifies our building.” D’Imperio’s drive to give her council members opportunities to lead and serve - and work in service of students everywhere - is remarkable. She has attended every National Student Council Conference since 1995, leading many workshops or joining students running their own workshops, and helped run activities at several LEAD Conferences. For the past 15 years, she has served as secretary of the New York State Council of Leadership and Student Activities (NYS CLSA) Executive Board, and her school has had at least one student on the state board for the past 25

years. For three years, she served as the chairperson for the state conference, and each year in March, she helps to organize and run another conference for NYS District 11 that attracts over 800 students and advisers from five surrounding counties. Named a Warren E. Shull region finalist in 2005, a three-time NYS CLSA Adviser of the Year, and winner of the Earl Reum Regional Award in 2019, D’Imperio’s dedication as an adviser is well-known and celebrated in New York - and her expertise is sought far beyond. She has written insightful content for Advise magazine and National Student Council online, including ideas on how to carry on virtually during school shutdowns, fundraising, and getting approval for leadership projects. Since 2004, she also has been a head counselor for the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards in collaboration with NASSP. Livonia MHS Student Council President Abigail Abrey notes that some of her favorite memories of school are at council events with Mrs. D. “She is someone I hope to be like as I grow up with how many hearts and lives she has affected and inspired,” she says. “I will never be able to thank her enough, not just for what she has done for me, but what she has done for our entire community and people all over the world.” Being an adviser this past year hasn’t been easy, but Principal Gammon says some of D’Imperio’s strongest leadership occurred during the pandemic. “She was instrumental in creating a warm, caring environment for students within the strict structure of our COVID safety plans. She helped our students to look at each obstacle as an opportunity, encouraging them that all things are still possible if we are creative and carry the right attitude.” Executive Director of NYS CLSA Roberta Bittel says, “When students speak of their experiences with Mrs. D., they confirm that she does so much more than teach. She instructs them about life, teaching young adults skills that will help them in their futures to foster great success in higher education and the workforce. ‘Advisor’ does not begin to cover all that Terry is. She is a leader, a teacher, a role model, a friend, a counselor, and for many, the person they will learn the most from about who they aspire to be.” For inspiring students to serve their school and community, and for supporting the next generation of servant leaders in New York and beyond, National Student Council proudly recognizes Terry D’Imperio as the 2021 Warren E. Shull High School Advisor of the Year. Enjoy this article? Managing one’s time can sometimes feel like an uphill battle. As a result, adults with hectic schedules and multiple responsibilities may pine for an extra hour or two in the day. While it’s impossible to extend a day from 24 to 26 hours, there are ways for busy men and women to create more time in their day. 1. Embrace organization tools. Whether it’s day planners, smartphone reminders or more traditional print calendars with meetings and deadlines written on them, organization tools can greatly cut back on time spent trying to remember and/or confirm meeting times, project schedules, deadlines, and other obligations. 2. Assess your productivity. Some people are most productive in the mornings, while others do not hit their strides until after lunch. Identify the time or times of day when you tend to be most productive, and make an effort to focus exclusively on work during these times. Resist any urge to schedule meetings or conference calls during those times of day when you are most productive, as it can be hard to multitask or focus when discussing projects with coworkers or clients. 3. Minimize distractions. Social media, the internet and texting can distract attention away from tasks that must be completed, ultimately affecting how quickly and efficiently such projects are finished. Make a concerted effort to avoid social media and the internet while at work, and turn off smartphone alerts that entice you to go online. In addition, turn off text alerts if they are proving too great a distraction. 4. Reconsider your commute. Professionals who drive to work but find themselves sitting in traffic on their way to and from work can investigate possible alternatives to driving themselves. Public transportation might not get you to work more quickly than driving yourself, but time spent on a bus or train can be used to work on projects and check and answer work-related emails, clearing up time later in the day. Time spent behind the wheel of an automobile cannot be safely spent working.

SUNY Geneseo might be just the right fit for you!

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OFFICE MORE ECO-FRIENDLY Develop telecommuting policies. In analyzing data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2005-2014 American Community Survey, GlobalWorkplaceAnalytics.com found the population of regular work-at-home non-self-employed persons grew by 103 percent between 2005 and 2014. Working from home is often seen as employee-friendly, but it also can benefit employers and the environment. When employees work from home, their employers need not purchase or lease as much office space, saving them substantial amounts of money. In addition, working from home cuts down on the number of commuters driving to work, decreasing fuel consumption and vehicle emissions. Employers who cannot allow employees to work from home full-time can still help the environment and their employees by allowing workers to work from home one or two days a week.
