Tips on planning a memorial service • Set the date and time. Memorial services should be planned in consideration of any family members who have traveled from out of town. Set a date close enough to the funeral or anniversary event that visiting friends and family can attend. •␣Choose a location. Arrange a memorial service at a location that is large enough to accommodate the number of people you’ve invited. Know how many chairs you need, tables for food and arrangements and a podium for a guestbook. •␣Compile a guest list and send out the invitations. Stay organized when planning a memorial service by making a list of all friends and loved ones of the deceased for sending out invitations. •␣Personalize decorations and music. Make the memorial service a reflection of the person whose memory you’re honoring by choosing decorations and music the individual would have liked. Use floral arrangements with the person’s favorite flowers or colors and compile a play list of favorite songs or types of music to be played throughout the service. •␣Get input from loved ones. Ask friends and family members of the deceased individual for input about special touches that will best help remember their loved one. •␣Arrange for guest speakers. A key component of many memorial services is having a series of guest speakers who can provide their personal perspective on the deceased person’s life and the legacy being left behind.

Leaf Guards

MAINTAIN SPARKLING CLEAR POOL WATER Nearly every pool owner has had to deal with algae at some point in his or her life. One of the best ways to minimize algae spores in the pool besides high-sanitation levels is through routine brushing and vacuuming. According to Leslie’s Pool Supplies, pool walls, floors and steps are the most common places to find algae in a pool. If left untreated, algae can burrow their roots inside the cracks on these surfaces, making them very difficult to remove. That’s why weekly (or more frequent) brushing and vacuuming can help keep surfaces clean and algae-free. Vacuuming also helps remove debris that has fallen into the water and sunk, which can decompose and contribute to water cloudiness. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We were camping this weekend, and on our last day in the woods my dog “Jumper” had a run-in with a skunk. He is really rank. I tried washing him off in the lake, but it didn’t seem to help the smell at all. We had to drive home with this incredibly bad smell permeating the car. Jumper smells almost as bad today as he did on Sunday. How can I get rid of the odor? -- Rick in Burlington, Vermont DEAR RICK: That odor really lingers! Good job trying to wash Jumper’s coat in the lake as soon as possible; that may have helped a little bit. You’ll have to use a bit of chemistry to remove the oily skunk spray. Tomato juice is recommended by many people, and it does have some effect because it’s a little bit acidic and can break up some of the oils. Its aroma also helps mask the skunk scent, at least temporarily. Another cleaning recipe, found on American Kennel Club’s website (www.AKC. org), mixes baking soda with mild detergent and household hydrogen peroxide (3% strength). The foaming mixture can be worked into your dog’s coat, left on for about five minutes and then rinsed away. With any solution or recipe you use, be careful to not let it get into Jumper’s eyes, ears or nose. Many of the ingredients are irritants that can cause a lot of discomfort. Deodorizing your car will take some extra effort. You can gently clean the upholstery, floor mats and headliner with a cloth dipped in a solution of water and baking soda. The baking soda will dry to a haze and needs to be vacuumed off. Follow up with a shampoo formulated for car interiors.

HOBBIES FOR DIFFERENT PERSONALITY TYPES Athletes can pursue a host of potential hobbies or activities that will foster their love of sports. Men and women who still have a hop in their step can sign up to compete in adult sports leagues. Depending on the sport, leagues might be available to adults of various ages and skill levels, and some may even be more focused on fun than competition. For athletes who can no longer lace up their cleats, coaching youth sports or volunteering to coach at a nearby school provides a chance to stay involved even if competing is no longer possible. WORK PANTS: THE NEXT GENERATION (NAPSI)—Just as technology has had a major effect on the kind of work people do, it has also changed the clothes in which they do that work. For example, with hard work in mind, a new collection of pants has been created by Carhartt with a unique blend of durability and functionality. “Our company has been around for nearly 130 years, and throughout our history, we’ve continued to improve our product offerings to fit the needs of our hardworking consumers,” says Deb Ferraro, vice president of product development at Carhartt. “This new collection of pants reinforces our commitment to setting a new standard for workwear.” Carhartt’s Steel Multi-Pocket pant, Steel Double-Front pant, and Steel Cargo pant feature the brand’s Full Swing® technology and a fabric blend of cotton, nylon and spandex. First introduced in 2015, Full Swing® uses stretch panels to provide ease of movement in the joints, improving hardworking consumers’ range of motion where they need it most—both on and off the job. Additionally, each of the new pant styles is equipped with knee pad openings designed to fit the company’s most recent innovation in knee protection. The Carhartt knee pad features a strapless, honeycomb design that maximizes durability and comfort, providing an easy-to-wear solution for impact protection. The launch of these new work pants coincides with a celebration of Carhartt’s oldest work pants. The classic Firm Duck Double-Front Work Dungaree was first introduced to the company’s product line in 1939, and it is now the focal point of the brand’s latest campaign celebrating its sewing, cutting and distribution associates. The video highlights the product details while unveiling the craftsmanship behind every pair of the B01 Firm Duck Double-Front Work Dungarees. To learn more about Carhartt’s latest pants and knee pads, visit www.Carhartt.com. To watch the brand’s latest video, “61 Workers, One Mission,” visit the Carhartt channel on YouTube.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Here’s a great tip when making crème brûlée: Make sure you use a wide, shallow dish. The size is important, because if it’s too deep, the center won’t set, and if it’s too small you won’t get that great cracking top!

* “Have long nails? Stuff a piece of a cotton ball in the fingertip of your gloves to keep your nail from piercing the gloves. Just a tip for staying safe and germfree.” -- I.R. in Georgia * If you have a screw that is stuck, try giving it a blast with a hair dryer. The heat can sometimes help to loosen it up. * Beginning sewers can practice on a piece of Styrofoam from a meat tray (clean) or a takeout container. You can find large plastic needles at a craft store. * “If you want to remove fat from your broth, simply set a bowl filled with the broth in the fridge for a few hours. As the liquid cools, the fat will separate to the top and harden, making it easy to scrape off.” -- W.L. in Minnesota * “To whiten my yellowed tablecloth and napkins, I sliced several lemons and put them in a big pot of boiling water. I removed the water from the stove and soaked the cloths. After the water cooled, I rinsed them and hung them to dry in the sun. They are like new.” -- A.C. in Missouri

WALKING Just want to say thank you to the kind, considerate, and unselfish drivers who slow down a little bit and move over a little bit as you drive by us while we are walking along the edge of a country road where there are no sidewalks to use. To all the other drivers, it would not kill you to slow down a little bit and move over a little bit When you drive by us walking because it could kill us.

IRRESPONSIBLE Teenagers really need to be more cautious at nighttime, especially around midnight. I’ve been seeing teenagers walking around and riding skateboards at nighttime, especially around 12:30-1 o’clock at night without any reflective gear or flashlights. They are wearing dark clothing, and drivers cannot see them. People who are driving may not see them due to the teenagers’ irresponsibility. Parents shouldn’t be allowing their teenagers to be out this late. Both teenagers and parents should be more responsible. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

HABITAT VOLUNTEERS Thank you to all the volunteers for Habitat for Humanity of Livingston County for coming out last Saturday. You generously gave of your time and talents to build a basement for the home that already means so much to my children and I. We are so incredibly grateful. May God bless you all!

THANK YOU ROCK STARS To the individuals leaving beautiful painted rocks with positive quotes around the local parks. They are so fun to find and to place someplace else for someone else to find.

CEMETERY UPKEEP I cannot believe the way the [local] Cemetery looks. There were not any American flags at the gravesides of service men and women for the Memorial Day holiday. The lawn needs to be mowed and weed wacked, the flowers trash bin needs to be emptied, and the American Flag at the entrance of the cemetery is worn and tattered. It is just sad; it is a beautiful cemetery. I am not sure if there is a group who does this, or is it volunteer? If it is volunteer, then maybe more volunteers are needed, if you did need more volunteers, maybe post something looking for help.

your family and friends to make sure they’re using shades and drapes, fans and AC, are drinking plenty of water, and are not experiencing heat exhaustion. Help people at home stay cool.

HEAT IS ALSO DANGEROUS This hot humid weather is dangerous for aged, disabled, and medically impaired individuals. Due to Covid-19, the cooling libraries, community rooms and restaurants are unavailable. Please check on

WHAT A GIFT!Ê What a generous gift!! Thank you to the woman at Wegmans Geneseo who paid for my son’s groceries when he was short of money...no questions asked.

PAINTED TRASH IS TRASH Painted rocks are trash and litter. If you like them, fine, but keep them in your own yard, not in public places. STOLEN SOLAR HYDRANGEA This is a time when everyone should be thankful for what they have. I work very hard for everything that I have. I enjoy gardening and my yard. I am select when I choose any decorations for my yard. I take great pride in how my yard looks at night. I have many solar lights, that brighten up my yard. I bought an expensive, unique, beautiful purple hydrangea that was solar and had very pretty lights. Why did someone feel the need to steal from my backyard? First of all, who is creeping in my backyard? That is

FEELING FORTUNATE… That we live in a state where our cases of C-19 have decreased, where most people are considerate of the rules that got us to this point, and for the excellent health care system we benefit from in this area. That you to ALL Front-Line Workers!! THANK YOU TEACHERS! Thank you to all the teachers and administrative staff for their hard work and planning for the upcoming school year. my privacy. The lights are for me to enjoy, not you! You are a thief, and you disgust me. I hope you enjoy my light. Don’t forget, karma will get you when you least expect it! WHY LOOK AT COLOR? A person matters because God loves them, and they matter to Him. We just need to acknowledge God more, and each of us will feel like we indeed do matter to Him. It sounds simplistic, but why make it complicated? Have the faith of a child to know God is good and live like God matters to you. Treat others the way you want to be treated. It isn’t about what you look like on the outside, but what your heart looks like on the inside. MISSING POLITICAL SIGN How juvenile and spiteful is the person who took our political sign from our yard in Victor! This is stealing and against the law. This shows the perpetrator has little integrity.

Livonia Inn Celebrates 160 Years

with Grand Opening! BY AMANDA DUDEK

O

n Thursday, July 9th, the historic Livonia Inn held its grand opening, applauding the beginning of a new chapter in its 160 years as a local eatery and icon. This iconic Livonia landmark was called the Commercial House before it was renamed the “Livonia Inn” by long-time owner, Ralph Parker, in the early 1980s. Now, Tracy and John Cope have renovated the Livonia Inn, preserving Parker’s legacy and the Inn’s reputation for excellence. It all started around 1980, Ralph Parker recalled. He had noticed how busy the Livonia Inn, then the Commercial House, always was from his vantage point across the street at the lumber mill which he then owned. “It was the go-to place,” he said. “All the movers and the shakers went there.” When the opportunity arose to buy the Inn, Parker leapt at the opportunity. “It had been a stagecoach stop for going west, then a stop on a very active rail line,” shared Parker. “Friends and I tore out the walls, rewired it, put in a firstclass kitchen, redid the whole place and changed the name to the Livonia Inn.” Parker’s partner, whom he eventually bought out, was also the Inn’s chef. Cooking large amounts of delicious food naturally stands out in Parker’s mind. “For St. Patrick’s Day, I would buy these huge briskets of corned beef and cook them myself with spices in enormous pots,” he reminisced. “Then, we had to chill them in our walk-in cooler before slicing it on the meat slicer. We had a buffet, and I had to start cooking about 4 days before St. Patrick’s Day. People would come from all over, fighting to get reservations. They were the best cuts of corned beef, and the place was packed!” Parker added that he has kept a three-ring binder of all his special recipes. Parker recalled many more busy days. “People would come from everywhere, dance, and the floor would shake,” he said. “We really took it to another level. It was a grand time.” The Livonia Inn’s relationship with the Genesee Valley Penny Saver has also lasted a lifetime. “When I bought the Livonia Inn, the Genesee Valley Penny Saver was run by Jane Harrison (co-founder) from a small office on the circle in Avon,” said Parker. “I knew I had to advertise. People have to advertise, and I am a firm believer in it. I started advertising with the Genesee Valley Penny Saver, and I have been a believer ever since. It is a very good way to reach people.” After 40 years, Parker has placed the Inn in the capable hands of Tracy and John Cope. “I still live here, but Tracy and John are running it,” he explained. “It has been a wonderful journey, and Tracy and John are just fantastic. I consider Livonia my home, and it is such a nice community. I couldn’t be happier.” “Ralph Parker still owns the Inn, and we are helping him to make sure his legacy is preserved,” added Tracy Cope. “We are his friends. This isn’t about business or money. It is about the community we love. It is about making sure Ralph’s legacy is preserved in the right way and that the Livonia Inn’s legacy would live on.” Cope shared that the Livonia Inn had been closed for some months before the advent of COVID, and she believes that if she and her husband had not stepped in, it would not have survived. “We know the Inn is important to this community,” she said. “We raised our family in this community, and we live right down the street. One of the reasons we did the renovations is because it is very important to us historically.”

Many gather for the Livonia Inn’s Grand Opening on July 9th!

John and Tracy Cope have invested much into renovating and remodeling the Livonia Inn for its grand opening. “We received a $25,000 grant, and we have been able to do so much,” said Tracy Cope. “It had a very 80’s style, but now it looks much cleaner and brighter, not modern, but more historically correct and up-todate. One of the great things about the Livonia Inn is that it has always been inviting to the community, and it has always had art,” she continued. “We have a gallery of local art work for sale, and Parkers Brothers Game Room for cards and games.” In keeping with the tradition, the Livonia Inn will continue to delight guests with its culinary offerings and excellent service. “Our new chef, Adam Zeller, is from New Orleans, and while we will continue to cater to those who enjoy the old favorites like wings, burgers and our sought after prime rib, we will also serve up delicious new specials such as stuffed pork loin with spinach, cranberries, goat cheese and olives over polenta. The entire community is welcome to stop in and enjoy coffee and dessert, cocktails and dinner while appreciating our environment.” While the Livonia Inn has been modernized–it has even received its first dishwasher–it still retains its legacy and charm. “Modernization can make things easier for your servers and guests,” explained Tracy Cope. “For example, our bathrooms are now updated, larger and wheelchair compliant. We have turned the private walkway on the side of the Inn into an outdoor eating space with tables, chairs, plants and maybe even a mural in the future. At the same time, we are making sure this landmark building continues to survive and that Ralph Parker’s legacy continues for many years to come.”

RECOGNIZE AND AVOID YOUTH SPORTS INJURIES Repetitive use activities: Swimmers, tennis players, pitchers, and quarterbacks may experience something called a repetitive use injury. This is pain in an area of the body that is used over and over again. Inflammation of muscles and tendons may appear, but repetitive use injuries also may result in stress fractures, which the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases defines as hairline fractures in bones that are subjected to repeated stress. Rest between exercises can help alleviate these types of injuries. Ice, compression, elevation and immobilization may be used if pain is persistent.

A Healthy Diet Includes Omega-3 and Omega-6 --DEAR DR. ROACH: It seems that eating a healthy diet with an emphasis on nuts and seeds, fruits, vegetables and grains is the best choice for anyone. It’s been well-documented that omega-6 is inflammatory, whereas foods containing omega-3 are not. It seems to me that we should be consuming foods that have more omega-3 in them. The only problem is that, from my research, all nuts and seeds with the exception of chia and flaxseeds have a much higher ratio of the omega-6 to the omega-3. This appears to be the case with most foods, no matter which food group they are in. How can any of the healthy foods be beneficial when so much more of the “bad fats” are being ingested? -- Anon. ANSWER: Dietary fats are categorized into four groups: monounsaturated, polyunsaturated, saturated and trans-saturated. It is accepted that monounsaturated fats have a healthy effect, reducing heart disease risk, while trans-saturated fats are clearly harmful. The effect of saturated fats on health is mixed, but those that come from processed meat increase heart disease and diabetes risk. Saturated fat overall has little effect on heart disease risk, but swapping saturated fat with unsaturated fats (both polyunsaturated and monounsaturated) appears to reduce heart disease risk. Polyunsaturated fats are categorized into the omega-3 family and the omega-6 family. I also have read in many places that omega-6 fats are “bad fats,” causing inflammation. The best evidence, a 2014 review of all controlled trials published, showed that omega-6 fats are NOT inflammatory and that they DECREASE risk of heart disease compared with meat-based saturated fats. We should be consuming both omega-3 and omega-6 polyunsaturated fats, mostly from plant sources. The data support that nuts and seeds are foods we should be eating more of, but we also should be eating good sources of omega-3, including fatty fish, the chia and flaxseeds you mentioned, as well as walnuts and canola oil. Most people have to work harder to get omega-3 oils but get plenty of omega-6. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have recently started transitioning to a plant-based diet for preventative health reasons. While discussing the benefits of nuts and seeds with a dietitian, they had a disclaimer that flax seed can interfere with medications and to eat them two hours before or one hour after taking medications. I would not sit down and eat a handful of flax seeds, but now I am afraid to use them in the meals I prepare at all. Can you help me make a good decision in using them? -- J.E. ANSWER: For people eating reasonable amounts (like a handful or two) of flax seeds as part of a meal, it is unlikely that they would interfere with medications enough to cause any significant problem, for most medications. There are two situations that might merit concern: In powerful anti-clotting agents, such as clopidogrel, flax seeds might prompt increased activity. Secondly, flax seeds may lower blood sugar a small amount. In combination with insulin or oral diabetes drugs, the blood sugar could possibly dip lower than expected. I doubt either of these interactions is likely to cause harm, but it is reasonable to discuss with your doctor if you are on one of the classes of medications mentioned. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible.
