PICKUP TRUCKS REMAIN POPULAR Pickup trucks have long been among the most popular vehicles sold, and Statistica states the number of new pickup trucks sold in the United States continues to grow. Between 2015 and 2016, 2.7 million pickups were sold, and some 2.24 million of those were full-sized pickups. A recent study from the Automotive News Data Center found the big three pickup manufacturers, which include Ford, GM and Dodge, sell an average of 6,500 trucks every day in North America. While the popularity of pickup trucks may be evident to today’s motorists, just who is behind the wheels of those trucks may come as a surprise. According to a recent study from MaritzCX, covering the 2016 model year, more people from affluent families are opting for pickup trucks than economy cars. Other factors also may be contributing to the popularity of pickup trucks. A survey from Insure.com asked 2,000 licensed drivers ages 18 and up to rank the kinds of vehicles driven by the most attractive members of the opposite sex. The survey found that women prefer drivers of black pickups. Motorists who have never before driven pickup trucks but are mulling whether or not to join the truck-loving masses can consider a host of factors as they begin looking for trucks. Size: Pickups are larger than many other vehicles and tend to be heavier. As a result, when driving a pickup, leave more space for braking and do not tailgate. Blind spots: Because pickup trucks are longer than cars, they may have larger blind spots. Drivers should adjust the mirrors to diminish as much of their blind spots as possible. Also, give ample notice when changing lanes or making turns. Reverse: Upon purchasing a pickup, first-time truck owners may benefit from practicing driving in reverse so they can grow accustomed to doing so in a truck. Hauling gear: Be sure to properly restrain items that are hauled in the pickup truck bed, or invest in a bed cover so nothing is lost and safety is not compromised. Inclement weather driving: Pickup trucks have very little weight in the back when their beds are empty. This can cause trucks to fishtail on wet or snowy roads. Alleviate this by placing some sandbags in truck beds before driving in poor weather.

USE LESS ENERGY WHEN THE WEATHER WARMS Invest in ceiling fans, which can move air through the home. This will help prevent pockets of hot air in certain spaces. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, even in homes with air conditioning, ceiling fans enable homeowners to raise the thermostats on their AC units by about 4 F with no reduction in comfort. Attic fans can draw heat out of a home through vents, also helping to reduce indoor air temperatures. These devices can reduce reliance on air conditioners, especially on moderate days or cool nights.

POTENTIAL CULPRITS BEHIND THINNING GRASS Leaf spot The Center for Agriculture, Food and the Environment at the University of Massachusetts Amherst notes that leaf spot diseases affect both cool- and warm-season turfgrasses. Various fungi can cause leaf spot. Symptoms and the timing of the appearance of leaf spot will vary depending on which fungi is causing the problem. For example, bipolaris sorokiniana, which affects grasses in warm, wet summer months, produces small spots that are dark purple to black. Dreschslera poae is another fungi that causes leaf spot, and it also produces dark purple to black spots. However, it tends to appear in the spring when the weather is cool and moist. Understanding the different fungi and when they typically strike can help homeowners identify what is causing their grass to thin. In such situations, professional landscapers can be invaluable resources as well.

We would like to thank the Dansville community for all of the cards, donations, phone calls, and text messages as we mourned the loss of our Princess Emilee. We would like to thank Hindle’s Funeral Home and Dansville Four Square Church for taking such great care of our family during this difficult time. We would also like to thank Julee Acomb for coordinating the dinner after Emilee’s funeral. A special thank you to Amanda Acomb Halpenny for being there for us during this difficult time. Thank you to Patrick Acomb, Tanner Mitchell, Brooke Gargus, Katlyn Tatu, Tyler Hamsher, Jake Smith, Dallas Baker and Emilee’s sister Kellee for carrying her to her final resting place. Lastly, we would like to leave you with words that were spoken at Emilee’s funeral in hopes that it will make you think about the next choice you make. I would like each and every one of you to think about a poor choice you have made. Was your poor choice due to alcohol, drugs, or distracted driving? Did you not wear your seatbelt? Did you use your phone, use drugs, vape or not stop your friends from distracting you while driving? I bet you said; “It won’t happen to me.” It won’t happen to us.” We have done this before! We did it yesterday and last week. We have done this 100 times.” Were you afraid to call your parents or a friend? Well guess what? Em would be with us today if she didn’t have 1 or 2 too many drinks. Drinks that caused her to distract her friend while driving. Is it really worth it? To chance it and say “Ok, I will be ok. Nothing’s going to happen.” Does Emilee have the same chance as all of us do today? To be able to read these words and say was it really worth it? No, she doesn’t. But you do! You ALL have more chances at choices that she will never get again. How many chances have you already taken? How many more chances do you need to take before you make a different choice? How many choices do you get in one lifetime before they run out? How many have you already had? One, two? I don’t know, two parties a week for the last 2

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

years is over 200 choices. I am sure for some of you, you have even had more than two parties a week so 200 is low balling it. It’s time to make some different choices. YOUR TIME IS UP! As you read these words in front of you please think, and ask, is it really worth it? Do we want to lose anyone else? Do we want to put our loved ones through this terrible tragedy? Do we want to hurt innocent people for our bad choices we make in life? I hope not because NO parent should go through what we are going through. So, go hug your parents and tell them that you love them. Because as parents we don’t get that chance with Emilee anymore. Please just ask yourself; “Is it really worth it?” I want each and every one of you to honor Emilee’s life and memory so that her death is not meaningless, just a number, or a story you read on social media, but an inspiration for change. Maybe save the life of a friend. Hold your friends accountable. Wear a seat belt! Put the phone down! Don’t allow open containers in your car! Pull the vehicle over! Don’t allow your friends to distract you while driving! Call someone! These are choices that are still in the power of your life to make.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a snowbird who uses two different cardiologists for my health, and I am devoted to both of them. However, they have conflicting advice. I have coronary artery disease and had three stents placed in New York. I am an active 86-year-old woman who walks at least a mile daily and does light weights. My lab results are all normal. I take a daily baby aspirin and Plavix. I’ve done well with them. My Florida doctor wants me to discontinue the Plavix and take just the aspirin, but my New York doctor thinks I should keep the Plavix forever. I honestly don’t know the right course of action. -- S.T.M. ANSWER: Both aspirin and Plavix (clopidogrel) work by decreasing the activity of platelets, the specialized blood cells that start to form clots. They have been shown to reduce blockages of stents, which hold open blood vessels that have been unblocked via a catheter in the heart. There are several different types of stents, and some of them have medications embedded in them, which release slowly over many months. These “drug-eluting” stents require using both aspirin and clopidogrel for a longer period of time. There is some debate about how long to continue these medications, but I have not read any recommendations to continue them for more than 30 months. A study (the DAPT trial) used exact information about the person and the type of stent to make predictions about balancing risks, and the results of the study showed that in your case, using both aspirin and clopidogrel would reduce heart attack risk slightly, but at an increased risk of bleeding. Nonetheless, some cardiologists will continue both medications in some patients if there are no problems. It sounds like your New York cardiologist may have more knowledge about the stent, as it was performed in New York, so I would try to get the two of them to reach a consensus. There may be something about your particular case that warrants long-term treatment with these medications.

DEAR DR. ROACH: A few years ago, Johns Hopkins produced an article stating that possibly being hard of hearing and doing nothing about it could lead to Alzheimer’s disease. Is that study still valid? -- S.S. ANSWER: It’s been almost 30 years since a link between hearing loss and dementia was first published, and recent research has confirmed this link. It now seems clear that hearing loss increases the rate of decline in brain function by 30% to 40%, independent of other risk factors. Put another way, people with mild hearing loss had double the risk of dementia in 10 years; those with moderate hearing loss, triple the risk; those with severe hearing loss had five times the risk of dementia compared with people of normal hearing and the same age. The brains of people with hearing loss are more likely to atrophy as well. Of course, not everybody with hearing loss develops dementia, and people with normal hearing can. There is some, but not conclusive, evidence that hearing aids protect the brain from dementia in people with hearing loss. However, it is clear that hearing aids can improve social functioning, well-being and some measures of memory. Despite this evidence, many older people with hearing loss do not get it treated. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

“Metal Casting Magic” The third Lion’s Discovery Workshop brings the return of Jeff Swift of Swift Custom Metal to the Library August 12-16, 2019 from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. for Metal Casting Magic. Children ages 8-12 will use a new method of creating a “mold” and with bismuth instead of aluminum, participants will learn to make items of a finer quality, perhaps jewelry or belt buckles! There is REAL magic in creating a “mold” and watching metal “pour” and harden into the unique item you have envisioned! Jeff teaches about metallurgy, pattern making and casting. With his close supervision and guidance, participants help heat and pour the metal, right here, at the Library! Each child will have a special creation to take home at the end of the week. Space is limited, but we still have room for YOU! Please call us at 585-335-6720 or stop in to register. This program is sponsored by the Dansville Lions Club.

If your child is 6 months to 3 years, please attend in the morning at 10:15. For those children ages 3 to 6, come along at 1:00 p.m. Both programs are important early literacy events. Babies will learn new words, songs and fingerplays. In the afternoon, the older children can enjoy books and songs, and then they can stay to express their artistic creativity in a craft program. Sometimes children are invited to dance or sing! And perhaps your child will want to stay a little longer to enjoy a “play” session with new friends! Please call to let Ms. Mary Ellen know to expect your child or stop in to register. You can sign up for 1000 Books Before Kindergarten when you stop in, another early literacy opportunity for you and your child. All books read by Ms. Mary Ellen can be recorded for reading “credit” in the 1000 Books program. For more information, please call us at 585-335-6720!

Experience: Many people have embraced gifting an experience instead of an item to their loved ones. Some companies even facilitate such gifts to newlyweds. Websites like Traveler’s Joy allow couples to establish honeymoon registries, building them with activities and experiences they hope to enjoy on their trips. Loved ones can then gift money toward those activities, providing a win-win situation for people who would prefer to gift an experience and ensuring couples’ honeymoons will be that much more memorable.

Gardeners I discovered some strange fungi under a tree in my yard. It has small tan mounds that erupt into long narrow red spearlike structures. Can you tell me anything about it? - Jane The fungus you encountered might be a stinkhorn, as described in this article: http://blogs.ifas.ufl.edu/wakullaco/2019/01/08/the-elegant-stinkhorn-mutinus-elegans/ Without a photo, a definite ID isn’t possible. These fungal structures do not damage plants. Rather, they grow on decaying plant matter. Web search “Stinkhorn” for variations.

from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County Do the milkweed plants in my front perennial bed have any significant impact on monarch butterflies? I am trying to decide if I should keep or remove them. - Joanne Joanne, I understand your angst. The number of monarchs is declining for several reasons, including habitat loss in central Mexico where they over-winter and summer habitat loss in the Midwest. There is a lot of talk about planting milkweed to help them out, but common field milkweed is not a very attractive plant, spreads invasively underground and is difficult to remove.

I wouldn’t want it in my front garden bed. One person’s milkweed plant probably doesn’t make a difference, but if many people plant it, it could make a difference over time.

milkweed in this region including Butterfly Weed (Asclepius Tuberosa), and Swamp Milkweed (Asclepius Incarnata). These two plants are much better suited for home gardens: Common field milkweed (Asclepius they are more attractive and will not Syriaca), serves as both a preferred spread invasively like common milkhost plant (where these butterflies weed. lay their eggs and larva/caterpillars The article from the University of feed) and a nectar source for adults. A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel On Aug. 5, 1981, President Ronald Reagan begins firing 11,359 air-traffic controllers striking in violation of his order to return to work. Two days earlier almost 13,000 air-traffic controllers went on strike over negotiations to raise their pay. On Aug. 6, 1945, an American B-29 bomber, the Enola Gay, drops the world’s first atom bomb over the city of Hiroshima, Japan. On Aug. 7, 1959, the American satellite Explorer 6 is launched into Earth orbit. The 142-pound spacecraft featured a photocell scanner that transmitted a crude picture of the Earth’s surface from a distance of 17,000 miles. The photo, received in Hawaii, took nearly 40 minutes to transmit. On Aug. 8, 1863, after his defeat at Gettysburg, Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee sends a letter of resignation to Confederate President Jefferson Davis. Davis refused the request.

Health Services And Screenings Every Woman Should Know About (NAPSI)-Eating a healthy diet, exercising, getting a regular Pap smear and mammogram-these are just a few of the many steps women can take to help ensure they live longer, healthier lives. However, it can be tough to figure out what to do, given the mountains of information that are available. So, how can women determine which services and screenings are right for them-and when? You can start by being aware of what the science says about preventing certain health conditions and by having an open and honest conversation with your doctor about your values and preferences. Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) is the number one cause of death for women. Fortunately, you can help prevent CVD by addressing important risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and obesity. Talk to your doctor about your CVD risk and whether a low- or moderate-dose statin may be right for you. Statins are medications that lower your cholesterol, prevent buildup of cholesterol and fats in your arteries, and reduce your chances of having a heart attack or stroke. Depending on your age and risk factors, taking a low-dose aspirin daily can also potentially help prevent CVD. Aspirin can help keep blood clots from happening, lowering your risk. You can reduce your risk of CVD by quitting smoking, eating a healthy diet, and becoming more physically active. Cervical Cancer - Screening for cervical cancer finds the disease when it is most treatable. Unfortunately, 12,000 women in the United States are diagnosed with cervical cancer each year. Most cases of cervical cancer happen in women who have not been regularly screened or appropriately treated. That is why it is critical for women to get screened regularly starting at age 21. There are several effective options for screening, depending on your age and preferences. The Pap test and the human papillomavirus (HPV) test are the most effective ways to screen for cervical cancer and are done during a visit to your doctor’s office. Talk to your doctor about which test is best for you and how often you should be tested. Breast Cancer - Breast cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in women; roughly 237,000 cases are reported in the United States each year. Breast cancer screening aims to find the disease early, when it is easier to treat. Mammograms, which are X-ray pictures of the breasts used by doctors to look for early signs of the disease, are the most effective method of screening for breast cancer. Evidence shows that the benefits of mammograms increase with age, with women aged 60 to 69 most likely to benefit from screening. Still, about one in three women who should get a mammogram regularly do not. If you are between the ages of 50 and 74, talk to your doctor about getting a mammogram regularly. Screening for Osteoporosis - As people age, their bones begin to thin. For some people, their bones become very weak and can break or fracture more easily, a condition known as osteoporosis. Osteoporosis affects one in every four women age 65 or older in the United States. Bone measurement tests can be used to screen for osteoporosis and identify the likelihood of future fractures. For people who have osteoporosis, treatments are available to reduce the risk of a fracture. If you are a woman age 65 or older ask your doctor about being screened for osteoporosis and other ways to improve bone health. For further information visit www.uspreventiveservicestaskforce. org

Avon American Legion Honors WWII Veteran Euphemia Blye By Amanda Dudek

Faye Blye displays her award from the Avon American Legion, (l-r) Bill Blye, Faye Blye and Pam Blye On Tuesday, July 16th, 2019, Marjorie A. Martin and other members of the Joseph Gallipeau Avon American Legion Post & American Auxiliary Unit #294 honored WWII Veteran Mrs. Euphemia “Faye” Blye, an Avon resident for over 20 years. The Legion members visited Faye Blye, recently of Harpers Park, to present her with an award recognizing her service. From 19441946, the now nearly 96-year-old Blye served in the Airforce as a PFC E-3 and was a part of the Women’s Army Corp, dissolved in 1976. Faye Blye’s story of the first time she met her husband highlights her tough, feisty nature. “I was at a USO on base,” she began. “I went to play a song from the jukebox, and this man said, ‘Play number 5.” Her eyes twinkle as she continues. “I said, “Play it yourself! You have all those stripes; you make more money than me!’” The man, young Sergeant Kenneth “Ken” O. Blye, asked her to the movies, and she agreed. During the movie, however, she suddenly felt Ken Blye’s head fall to her shoulder. He was asleep and snoring so loudly people were staring. Spirited Faye pushed him away and moved, but the date wasn’t over yet. As Ken Blye took her home, it started to rain. “He gave her a poncho to hold over her head because the roof leaked!” Faye Blye’s youngest son, Bill Blye, said. After that, the two were inseparable.

of these are your brothers and sisters?’ He said, ‘All of them,’ and on it went.” “They were so cute- all of them,” Faye Blye recalled. “They were the nicest kids you’d ever want to meet. I loved them all, every one of them. They are all gone now.” Some of Blye’s loved ones have passed away-her husband Ken over 31 years ago and her oldest son Ken “Kip” Blye in a tragic car accident 11 years ago, but her family remains very close. Bill and Pam Blye live only minutes away, and her middle son Jim Blye and his wife Mary visit frequently. She also has several grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Bill and Pam Blye’s oldest son, Billy, is uniquely close to his grandmother. “Billy joined the Marines right out of high school,” said Bill Blye. “My mom gave him his grandfather’s dog tags for good luck, and he cherishes them to this day.” Recent years have held honors for Blye. Robert, the son of the French farmer who rescued Ken Blye, wrote a book about the experience. Nearly seven years ago, he invited Blye to visit his hometown. Accompanied by Jim and Mary Blye, she boarded a plane for the first time and flew to France. “They had big celebrations and gave her a key to the city,” shared Bill Blye. “She was in two newspapers. To them, my father was a hero because he came to liberate them.” “He was a hero,” affirmed Faye Blye. Last year, Blye participated in an Honor Flight accompanied by her daughter-in-law, Mary Blye. “That was wonderful,” she recalled. When asked how she felt when the Avon American Legion told her they would like to give her an award, Faye Blye replied with characteristic humility. “I thought, What for?,” she said. “But I appreciated it.” “We want her to know she is not forgotten,” said Marjorie A. Martin, adding that anyone wishing to send Faye Blye cards or letters may send them care of the Avon American Legion.

“My father was a radio gunner and was over France when the tail was shot off his B-17 Bomber,” said Bill Blye. “When he jumped out, the door slammed shut on his chute. He said, ‘Oh God, help me!’ and the door flew open. He was the last one out alive.” Fortunately, a French farmer retrieved Ken Blye and concealed him in a small room for about three weeks. Finally, he was smuggled out to the English by the French Underground. Stateside, Faye Blye’s duties included checking men out to, and in from, service overseas. “It was hard,” she confided. “The people who came back were in such different condition. You felt so sorry for them all the time. We would go and stay with them for a couple of hours, you know? They were just so happy to have people around them.” Then, Faye and Ken Blye left the service, married and moved to Massachusetts where Ken Blye had grown up, the third of fifteen children. “When they went to his house, lots of kids were playing outside,” said Bill Blye’s wife Pam. “She said, ‘Which of these are your brothers and sisters?’ He said, ‘All of them.’ The living room was filled with children. She said, ‘Which

I very often bring items to the [local] store in [local town], as many people do. Everything sold there is donated, so I can’t get over how most things are marked. Most everything is marked high. Movement to the suburbs continues to be high, and renters tend to move more frequently than others. People who move cite a new job or a job transfer as one of the primary motivators to relocate. Acclimating to a new home and neighborhood after a move can be challenging. Even after boxes have been unpacked and items put away, some people still feel unsettled. It could be because one of the most important parts of being in a new house is feeling at home. That involves meeting neighbors, having friends over for dinner and knowing all of the local haunts that help solidify a homeowner as a true member of his or her new neighborhood. It can take time to establish feeings of belonging.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Dealing with a difficult person can be the kind of challenge you Aries Lambs love. Or it could be an energy-draining exercise in futility. Be certain your goals are worth your efforts. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The Divine Bovine might be seeing red at having your crisis-resolution efforts overlooked. But others know the truth, and they can be expected to step forward when the time comes. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You should be well on your way to finally making that important decision. Having the support of loved ones will help when crunch time comes. Keep a positive attitude. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Feeling uneasy about a move might not mean you’re having a case of Cancerian wavering. It could be your inner sense is warning you to reassess your situation before taking action. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Your pride could get in the way of admitting you might have erred. Best to ‘fess up now before a small mistake turns into a big misunderstanding. Make the weekend a special family time. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Trying to please someone with a less-than-glowing opinion of something you value could be a waste of time. If you like it, stay with it. The week’s end brings an answer to an old mystery. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) There might be time to make a change. But be honest with yourself: Is it what you really want, or one you feel pressured into making? Your answer should determine your next move. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Change is dominant, but so is caution: Proceed carefully, checking each step along the way to avoid encountering any unwelcome surprises that might be lurking along your path. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) It could be a mistake to rely on someone to keep his or her promise without checking out previous performances. What you learn now could save you from a painful lesson later. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Taking a strong stand on an issue you feel is too important to ignore could inspire others to follow suit. The weekend is a good time to socialize with old friends and make new ones. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Your sensitive nature gives you an insight into the problems of someone close to you. Your offer of support could be just what this person needs to start turning his or her life around. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Financial matters continue to need even more careful analysis than usual. Use caution with investment possibilities. A personal relationship might take an unexpected turn by the week’s end. BORN THIS WEEK: You appreciate the wonders of the world and enjoy sharing your delight with others. BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Make sure you’re getting enough sleep. Failing to get adequate sleep can have an adverse impact on your career. According to the Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School, failure to get enough sleep, even for just one night, can impair a person’s ability to function by affecting his or her ability to focus and access high-level cognitive functions. A panel of experts from sleep, anatomy and physiology, as well as pediatrics, neurology, gerontology and gynecology convened by the National Sleep Foundation in 2015 recommended adults between the ages of 26 and 64 get between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. Make a concerted effort to get more sleep if you’re falling short of those recommended guidelines.
