INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT GREYHOUNDS Retired racing greyhounds are people-friendly. Despite what their love of running may suggest, retired racing greyhounds are very sociable and typically get along great with both adults and children. Many retired racing greyhounds have been handled by trainers, dog walkers, veterinarians, and others since they were very young. That exposure to humans has made them very sociable.

Not only functional but quality to be admired. Hello! My name is Peanut. I am a 5-year-old female orange Tabby. I love my family and they love me! I was only 3 weeks old and weighed 13 ounces when I was found. Dad brought me home to Mom, and she fell in love with me at first sight! We needed each other!
Our sheds, the best quality available. Due to Covid-19 lumber prices are increasing. Our prices have to be adjusted accordingly so come in soon, the price we offer today may be different tomorrow.

HOBBIES FOR DIFFERENT PERSONALITY TYPES Book lovers also can channel their passions for the written word into a rewarding hobby. While reading might not seem like the most social activity, readers who want to use their love of books to grow their social networks can start a book club. People of all ages and backgrounds love to read, so starting a book club can be a great way to meet an array of people. Readers also can call their local libraries or schools to ask about reading programs for children. Volunteer to read to youngsters, helping the next generation discover the wonders of reading.

Prevent cold drafts from entering and the loss of heated air through basement headers, which, when left exposed, can make your furnace work harder. Look for a moisture-resistant product offering high thermal performance, such as Roxul Comfortbatt insulation. This type of mineral wool insulation makes installation simple. All that’s needed is a serrated blade or bread knife. Cut the batt to fit the cavity and press into place. The insulation will help improve energy efficiency as soon as it’s in place and provide savings over the lifetime of your home. Comfortbatt can also be used to top or replace old attic insulation. Aim for an R-50 or a depth of 16 inches.

GET YOUR HOME FALL- AND WINTER-READY Examine your fireplace and chimney system to ensure that no soot or creosote has collected. Any cracks or voids could potentially cause a fire. Before you turn the furnace or boiler on, replace the air filter and hire a professional to inspect the unit more thoroughly. These steps will improve the efficiency and life of your furnace and will ensure stable indoor air quality.

HELPING HEROES (NAPSI)—The Department of Defense reports that 1.3 million Americans serve in the military. If you or someone you care about is ever among them and sent overseas, you may be glad to learn about an organization that’s been assisting members of the U.S. armed forces, veterans and their families since the early 1900s: the American Red Cross. It provides emergency communication services, resiliency programs and morale activities. “We are committed to delivering critical services with a caring touch wherever and whenever they’re needed—24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year—for military members and their families at home and around the world,” said Koby Langley, senior vice president for Service to the Armed Forces at the Red Cross. Now, the organization is expanding support for U.S. military personnel in Eastern Europe with a new office in Romania. In addition to aiding military members and their families, the American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to disaster victims; supplies about 40 percent of the nation’s blood; teaches lifesaving skills; and provides humanitarian aid. A not-for-profit organization, it depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public. Learn More: The free Hero Care App helps members of the military and veteran communities access emergency and other Red Cross services anywhere in the world. Go to your app store or text GETHEROCARE to 90999 to download the app. For further facts, visit www.redcross.org. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

HOW PARENTS CAN SIMPLIFY STUDENTS’ TRANSITION TO COLLEGE LIFE Emphasize time management. Today’s high schoolers are busier than ever before, so many may already be prepared for the juggling act that is college life. But college students have more free time than their high school counterparts, so parents can emphasize the importance of managing that free time wisely as opposed to spending it lounging on the couch or napping.

NATURAL WAYS TO FIGHT FALL ALLERGIES Increase omega-3 fatty acids. It is well documented that fatty acids are good for brain health and cardiovascular well-being. But these acids also may help with allergies. A German study linked foods high in omega-3 fatty acids with the ability to fight inflammation, which is a hallmark of allergy suffering. Foods that are high in fatty acids include walnuts, flax, eggs, and cold-water fatty fish.

SOY FOODS PACK A POWERFUL PUNCH The Cleveland Clinic notes that soy foods provide a host of nutritional benefits. Plant protein, including soy, can provide cardiovascular benefits, including helping with people with high blood pressure lower their blood pressure to healthier levels. While many people rely on animal-based proteins to get their daily recommended intake of protein, soy foods are naturally free of cholesterol and low in saturated fats. That makes soy foods more heart-healthy sources of protein than animal products. The Cleveland Clinic says substituting soy foods for animal-based proteins a few times per week can reduce a person’s risk for cardiovascular disease. Soy foods also can be a great source of dietary fiber, though the U.S. Soybean Export Council advises consumers that not all soy products are the same. The USSEC notes that foods like soy milk and tofu contain very little fiber. People who want to utilize soy beans as a source of dietary fiber should look to foods that utilize the whole bean, such tempeh, soy flour and textured soy protein. The USSEC also notes there’s some confusion in regard to the connection between soy foods and iron, though the group admits research is ongoing. While a 1/2 cup serving of cooked soybeans contains four milligrams of iron, the phytate and soy protein present in soy foods reduce iron absorption, meaning that the body won’t really benefit from the iron. However, the USSEC recommends consumers purchase fermented soy foods, including tempeh and miso, because the body might absorb more iron from these foods than it will when consuming other types soy foods. Unfortunately, there are no cures for progressive dementias that are linked to plaque tangles in the brain and changes in the way the brain processes the protein alpha-synuclein. Patience and various medications may be needed to help those with dementia live fuller lives. Cholinesterase inhibitors are mainstays in dementia treatment. These medications prevent the breakdown of acetylcholine, a chemical messenger important for learning and memory. Acetylcholine supports communication among nerve cells by keeping acetylcholine levels high. Physical therapy and cognitive therapy may be used in conjunction with medication to assist those with various dementias.

Vitamin D Deficit After Gastric Bypass --DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 72-year-old woman in fair health. I had strong bones until I had gastric bypass surgery. Within two years, I developed osteoporosis. In 2016 my parathyroid hormone level was found to be elevated. However, it has come down over the past year or two from 97.76 to 68.95 pg/mL. The endocrinologist now has me on 8,000 IU of vitamin D-3 per day. My calcium was 9.3 and ionized calcium was 5.0. Meanwhile, the rheumatologist treating my osteoporosis has prescribed Reclast infusions once per year. I just received my second one this month. This summer I broke a toe on my right foot with no known trauma. In October I sustained a stress fracture of my left heel bone, again without any known trauma. I am very worried about what all this means to my future bone health. -- L.M.J. ANSWER: I suspect you had vitamin D deficiency due to the gastric bypass surgery, which prevents your body from absorbing it efficiently. Without vitamin D, your bones cannot take up calcium as effectively. The parathyroid hormone often will increase in this situation, and this is called “secondary hyperparathyroidism.” It’s important to note that both your total and ionized calcium levels are normal. Ionized calcium is the active form -- some calcium binds to albumin, a major protein in blood. In secondary hyperparathyroidism, the calcium is never high. A high calcium and high parathyroid level always means primary hyperparathyroidism, which almost always comes from a tumor of the parathyroid gland. Unfortunately, I have seen people whose doctors have confused this point and missed the diagnosis. With replacement of your vitamin D (at a high-enough dose, you can absorb enough), the PTH level is settling back down to normal, and it would be expected that your bone strength would start going up as well. I would expect your endocrinologist or rheumatologist to follow your bone density through a DEXA scan. The Reclast (zoledronic acid) is an intravenous bisphosphonate, and it slows down reabsorption of your bone. Between the higher vitamin D and the Reclast, your bones should get better and your risk of fracture will decrease, but it will take time. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: In a recent column, you discussed the effect of ibuprofen on men with an enlarged prostate. I am a 78-year-old who runs 15-20 miles per week, with benign prostatic hyperplasia and who also has reduced urinary frequency with occasional use of Advil. As a runner, I have been reluctant to make it a daily regimen because I have read that inflammation is part of the body’s response to tissue damage, which is crucial to the healing process and is important for muscle growth. When ibuprofen’s anti-inflammatory effect reduces symptoms, does it affect the healing process also? Can you comment on the pros and cons for runners? -- B.M. ANSWER: High-dose ibuprofen was shown to inhibit muscle protein synthesis following weightlifting exercise. This led to a suspicion that it might impair the gains in muscle strength that are made with exercise. However, a Canadian study showed that moderate doses of ibuprofen (400 mg after exercise) did not impair muscle growth or gains in strength. Using ibuprofen for occasional muscle soreness or for the purpose of reducing prostate inflammation should not adversely affect your performance in running. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
COVID Plays Havoc With Puppy's Vaccines --DEAR PAW'S CORNER: My Labrador puppy, "Charlie," is six months old. He received his first and second round of vaccines, but then our state went into lockdown. Can I hold off on getting the rest of his shots for now, until restrictions ease? -- Blake F., Sacramento DEAR BLAKE: Contact Charlie's veterinarian first to find out if they are allowing non-urgent visits. The first year of vaccinations is extremely important for your dog's development and long-term health. Lockdown mandates are making it difficult for everyone to figure out if and when they should visit the vet for their pet's checkups. But veterinarians know how important it is to keep to the vaccine schedule (to learn more, go to akc.org and search for "puppy shots schedule"). By this point they should have some guidelines and a plan for scheduling routine appointments. That also goes for maintaining adult pets' vaccinations and keeping their licenses current. Contact the veterinarian to find out if they're booking routine appointments. What if you aren't able to get an appointment to get Charlie's third round of shots? For now, limit his exposure to other dogs, as he still has some risk of contracting serious illnesses like parvovirus. That means no dog park visits or play dates (unless you know the other dog's vaccine status). Let him run in the backyard or go to a state park or other large outdoor area that allows pets and doesn't have many people or animals around. Spend more time training him on basic obedience commands -- if you're both stuck at home, now is the perfect time. As soon as a vet appointment opens up, take Charlie in and get him up to date on his shots.

Thank You! The Town of N Dansville would like to recognize and thank Cub Scout Pack 71 for the great job cleaning up around the airport on lower Maple St. recently. They saw a need and volunteered their services for a project. They were able to social distance and were provided with gloves and masks if necessary and grabbers. Your services did not go unnoticed. Passerbys honked appreciation and others commented to Mr. Wolfanger, what a great job you did and wondered who the group was. Thanks to troop leaders and all volunteers of Scout Pack 71.

HOW TO SUPPORT BUSINESSES DURING MANDATORY RESTRICTIONS ORDER DELIVERY: It’s still possible to enjoy foods from your favorite local restaurants. Many restaurants that had not previously done so have begun to offer delivery services, be it curbside or at-home, and this can provide a great respite for families who have had to cook three meals a day at home for their entire families for extended periods of time. Curbside delivery has made it possible to get takeout meals without compromising social distancing recommendations.
Students who meet certain requirements may be eligible for scholarships. While academic or athletic skills are the first criteria associated with scholarships, they are not the only avenues by which students can pursue scholarships. Scholarships may be offered to students of certain ethnic groups; children of employees at particular companies; or to students who live in particular states. Local branches of organizations like the Rotary Club or Kiwanis also may give out scholarships.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Social Media Holds Hidden Dangers Even before the lockdowns brought on by the coronavirus, too many seniors felt isolated. Now it's even worse for many of us with the lack of face-to-face interactions ... and we've turned to social media for connections to others. There, on Facebook and Twitter, in chat rooms and email lists, we've found friends to talk to and pass the hours of this lockdown. We feel happy to have these people at the other end of the keyboard. It's good for us. Or maybe not. The big problem with social media is that we really don't know who is on the other end. The new friend who seems so interested in us might actually be a scammer, just waiting for the right moment to spring the trap and ask for money. How can you refuse, you'll wonder, if someone you've come to know so well asks for help? Or maybe we've shared too much information, such as our location or our real name. Or how about the new friend who sends funny cartoons, one of which might contain a virus that leaves our computer open to hackers? Add in an election year, and it's all too easy to talk online with people who supposedly share our views. Quite commonly they ask for money or contact info. Some things to think about: If you really want to connect with others on social media, create a fake name for it. Learn how to block people and don't add just anybody to your network or list. Don't give out your real name or location, no matter how friendly other people seem. Focus on an area of social media with a narrow, safe focus such as pets, cooking or gardening. Better yet, call up a few people you already know and ask if they'd like to meet for online games, such as chess, or just chatting. They might feel just as isolated as you do and welcome your overture.
This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Patty Love, Founder and Program Director of the Rochester Permaculture Center, believes our choices must go beyond the “how many and where” approach to restore— and even improve—our slice of nature.

“People typically choose plants based on creating an attractive display,” explained Love, a consultant and researcher, and Certified permaculture designer and teacher based in the Genesee River Valley. “A Permaculture design approach brings in plants which fill those same functions of beauty but also feed wildlife, pollinators, people, or all three.” Permaculture is a design system that harmoniously integrates people and landscape to meet the human needs while cultivating natural ecosystems which are diverse, stable, resilient, and regenerative. Put simply, it can be applied to landscaping to create beauty while living in beneficial harmony with the animals and natural environments around us. First, we must identify our natural environment. “We live in a humid temperate forest biome,” said Love. “That is the 4th most productive environment in the world in terms of converting sunlight into biomass. Since our own native climate is already so productive, why not recreate it as we landscape to take advantage of that potential? You can create your ideal look with edible plants which create a safer environment for your children while teaching them about nutrition, food origins and positive relationships between plants, animals, beneficial insects and other wildlife.”
Make your yard an environmentally friendly oasis.
TRY SOME OF PATTY LOVE’S TOP 10 TIPS Find natural alternatives to pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers. Our properties and waterways are all connected. What we put on our lawns typically finds its way into Lake Ontario, where nitrogen and phosphorus from fertilizers contributes to algal bloom. Other lawn chemicals can damage the water quality and disrupt food chains.
Think in layers. Natural environments consist of 8 layers: overstory (or canopy), understory, shrub, herbaceous, ground covers, roots, vines, and fungi. Select plants from more than one layer when planning an area. Using this pattern from nature allows for a tremendous amount of diversity while creating successful ecosystems for plants and animals.
Set the goals for your natural space; then select a design that works. If one of your goals is added privacy, for example, choose shrubs or trees that provide that. The Monroe County Soil and Water Conservation District offers many affordable varieties at its annual plant sale.
Build better lawns. Get the look of a short, green lawn beyond the monocrop that is grass. Dutch White Clover, thyme and chamomile are all low growing green plants that will fill out your lawn, add edible elements, and reduce the need for mowing.
Swap out favorite colorful landscaping plants, like the “burning bush” shrub, with beneficial native plants such as the blueberry bush. Its leaves also turn bright red in the fall, and meanwhile, it provides flowers for pollinators and berries for humans and animals. Plant it with beautiful nodding wild onions whose scent can deter deer and larval pests of blueberry plants. Keep author Dave Jacke’s 7 F’s in mind: Plants should provide at least some of these benefits: Food, Fiber, Fun, “Farmaceuticals” (plants with medicinal properties), Fuel, Fertilizer, and Fodder. Make sure the plants you choose are filling at least three of these functions!
“An environmentally responsible landscape is a way we can give back to nature while lowering the environmental impact of development,” Love encouraged. “It can improve our quality of life and restore our environment.”

Let the dandelions grow. Dandelions are one of the earliest and most important food sources for pollinators, and every part of the dandelion is edible. They are even medicinal! Choose a fruitful hedge. Rather than using an invasive shrub like Japanese barberry to create a hedge, go with a bountiful fruit producer like currant bushes. Raspberry and blackberry bushes also create a bramble border while producing many delicious berries. Aronia, a flowering shrub, are very easy to care for and produce a beautiful, edible black fruit which is high in antioxidants. Elderberries are also phenomenal because they are so versatile, growing nearly anywhere. Think of the bees! Bee Balm is an excellent option as bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and other beneficial pollinators are very attracted to it, and you can eat the petals and leaves! For vegetables, consider perennial Sea Kale or Turkish rocket, a perennial broccoli-like plant. Start small. Outline a designated space, even a square yard, and select a small community of plants for that environment. Let it be natural and see what happens!

GRASS ISSUE I agree with not mowing grass into the road. Near our hamlet, on the next road over, there was a long stretch-and I mean a long stretchof grass over one half of the road last week. It was not some little patch. Next time, I will take a picture. It is not compliable with NYS law. It was cleaned up, but the point is you can’t be putting tons of grass in the road. NO GRIPE WITH PAINTED ROCKS! If somebody is posting a positivity, I do not think that is trash or anything to gripe about. Smile and move on. their two dogs. We are animal lovers and not concerned about the dogs or their poop. What is problematic is we no longer have our privacy - we actually feel like moving. We don’t want to upset our neighbor, as they may take it personally. I just can’t understand why someone would do this. They have a large piece of property, as well, and a quiet road to walk down. It’s startling sometimes since it’s so private and quiet where we are. It took all our life savings to purchase our home, and it doesn’t even feel like “ours,” Please everyone, respect property lines and move if you need more room to walk. A good rule of o thumb is to follow social cues. If no c, one else in the area is blaring music, you shouldn’t do it either. KEEP CATS INDOORS I’m unpleasantly surprised to see so many outdoor cats in my neighborhood. In addition to being less safe when left to roam outside, outdoor cats also cause problems for humans and other animal species. Outdoor cats are vulnerable to attacks by wild animals like foxes. Cruel humans can harm them, kill them, or steal them to sell to laboratories. Outdoor cats can be hit by cars. It’s dangerous for them to be out in extreme weather conditions, both hot and cold. Cats are an invasive species due to human carelessness, and outdoor cats wreak havoc on

Be a responsible cat owner and keep your feline friends in the safety of your home. A LOT OF NERVE Neighbor, who do you think you are, offering my property to your friends? What I do or don’t do with my possessions is my business, not yours. My property does not belong to you, and it is not a toy chest for your prying eyes. Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.
