REASONS TO SHOP FARMERS’ MARKETS
8479 Reeds Corners Rd. Call 585-335-6872
There’s always something new at a farmers’ market, and this can entice shoppers to expand their flavor palates. Explore interesting, locally grown items. Even children may fall in love with colorful fruits or vegetables and their refreshing tastes.
ORDER DELIVERY: It’s still possible to enjoy foods from your favorite local restaurants. Many restaurants that had not previously done so have begun to offer delivery services, be it curbside or at-home, and this can provide a great respite for families who have had to cook three meals a day at home for their entire families for extended periods of time. Curbside delivery has made it possible to get takeout meals without compromising social distancing recommendations.

daily, but I had insomnia, itching and hot flashes from it. I stopped after four days but am still suffering from sleeplessness. Has the prednisone had a permanent effect on my body? -- J.W.S.L. ANSWER: Prednisone, a powerful anti-inflammatory and immune system-inhibiting steroid, has many side effects on the body, especially insomnia. Hot flashes and itching are uncommon side effects. Insomnia is more common when prednisone is taken twice daily. Anytime a person gets insomnia, it can create a situation where they become worried about sleeping, which can lead to a persistent problem, even though the effect of the prednisone is gone. I recommend some routine steps for treating insomnia, such as avoiding bright lights, including any electronic screen, for two hours or so before bed; regular exercise, if the condition for which you took prednisone allows it; and a warm bath before bed. A mild sleep aid, such as melatonin 1 mg or less, may help reset your system, but daily use is not necessary. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My wife had a heart attack. They did what they could for her, but she had a 100% blocked artery. They did clean it out, but a week later she had a fatal heart attack. Five or six months earlier, she called me quite often by a former friend’s name. I am wondering if blood was not getting to her brain or if she was starting to get dementia? -- G.M. ANSWER: I am very sorry about your wife. People who have blockages in the heart often have blockages in other blood vessels, such as those in the leg, but also those going to the brain. Poor blood flow to the brain may cause changes to memory and other specific problems. A stroke is very much like a heart attack. Most strokes are caused by poor blood flow to a specific area of the brain, and if it is severe enough, long enough, brain tissue will die, causing loss of function. People who have had multiple strokes are more frequently affected by dementia, called vascular dementia or multi-infarct dementia. I don’t know if this was the case for your wife, but it is certainly plausible. People who notice loved ones having memory lapses should get an evaluation sooner rather than later, as sometimes there are therapies that work better when started earlier. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Does BPH increase the possibility of prostate cancer? -- A.L. ANSWER: Benign prostatic hypertrophy is a common condition in men. About half of men in their 50s have an enlarged prostate, and the proportion gets even higher as men age. The major symptoms of enlarged prostate are difficulty with urine flow, a sensation of decreased emptying, difficulty initiating urination, and increased frequency of urinating, including at night. As symptoms worsen, incontinence can occur and even kidney damage may result due to the high pressure in the bladder. The first word in “BPH” is “benign”: It is not a cancerous condition. It does not protect against developing cancer, but there does not appear to be an increased risk either, according to the most recent studies. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. IMPROVE OVERALL ENDURANCE Pushing oneself physically can be exhausting and demanding. But whether you’re a seasoned athlete, a part-time fitness enthusiast or even someone who lives a largely sedentary lifestyle, you can find ways to dig down and improve your overall endurance. Many athletes find pushing their bodies past certain boundaries to be empowering. Letting complacency set in is easy, but finding the motivation to press on and push ahead takes mental determination.

Embrace eco-friendly activities. Various activities, from organic gardening to planting trees to beach cleanups, provide a great way to get outdoors and help the planet at the same time. Men and women who grow their own vegetables can take solace knowing that the vegetables they’re eating each night did not require the depletion of any natural resources to go from garden to table. Signing up for beach cleanups can prevent trash, including harmful plastics, from making its way into the world’s oceans, and such cleanups provide a great excuse to go to the beach.

Despite the widely held notion that men exceed the number of women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math fields, data indicates that there isn’t actually much disparity among the sexes. According to the National Science Foundation, women equal men in terms of bachelor’s degrees awarded in most of the fields of STEM, including biosciences, social sciences, mathematics, and physical sciences. The only STEM fields in which men still outnumber women are computer science and engineering. Women are just as capable as men to meet the demands of STEM careers. Raw IQ tests from the British Psychological Society have indicated that women and men frequently score equally well, with some studies suggesting women have the edge. In terms of mathematics prowess, girls score a mere 3 percent lower than their male counterparts on the math portion of the Scholastic Aptitude Test, according to the College Board.

CLEVER WAYS TO USE LEFTOVERS CREATE NEW MEALS. Using leftovers does not mean eating the same exact meal a second time. Ingredients can be utilized in new ways. For example, a roast chicken can be broken down and the meat can be used for fajitas on another night. Leftover tomato sauce and meatballs from a Sunday dinner can be turned into an impromptu chili with the addition of beans and peppers.

CORN M AZE: Visiting a corn maze is an activity that many people instantly associate w ith fall. Some farmers transform their cornfields into corn mazes once the temperatures dip, and such mazes can be fun for adults and children alike. Though adolescents can often be trusted to find their w ay through corn mazes, younger kids should be accompanied by an adult.
Create w himsical scarecrow s as part of your autumn decoration scheme. Gather older clothes that you no longer use and stuff the sleeves of shirts and the legs of pants w ith leaves, w hich are less expensive and easier to come by than straw. Use a few pieces of straw around the neck and hand areas of the scarecrow for visual effect. Tie off w ith tw ine and display your scarecrow.

UR STRONG I want to give a huge shout out to the many nurses a met during my stay this past month. Each and every one of you in your own way made my stay a little more bearable. From the handmade chocolate milkshake to just chatting with me, from laughing at my bad jokes to drawing funny pictures on the white board. But most of all, thanks for the care and attention given to me. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart! BARE FEET After I left the store, you asked the cashier why I was allowed to be barefoot. (My son was behind you in line.) Had you asked, I would have been happy to explain US Department of Justice 28 CFR Part 36 (.201 and .302) protects a person's right to go barefoot due to health, medical or disability reasons. It is a violation to ask why the person is barefoot, just as it would be to ask why a person is in a wheelchair. To educate: I have neuropathy, deadening the feeling in my feet. The greater my points of contact with the ground, the less likely I am to fall. If you pay attention, you will notice there is no longer a sign on any public entity stating no GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

CAR ACCIDENT ANGEL I was in a bad car accident on Route 247 in Canandaigua on Friday, August 28th, and right after my car was hit I was so scared and upset, but a very kind woman came to me and held me as I cried. She stayed right by side until the ambulance came. She was my angel, and I am forever grateful and blessed for her act of kindness. I did not get her name, but God bless you, and thank you so very much for being

OUT OF SEASON My brother has 30 acres of land and has been watching a large turkey family in the fields eating grasshoppers. Something spooked them and they all flew across the road onto a certain property. This guy grabs his gun and starts shooting! My brother flipped out as he watched this. This person said he wanted a turkey for dinner after he lied about it saying the turkeys scared his horses, claiming he shot over

the horses at the turkeys. My brother does not know for sure if he hit one, but if he got the hen, those babies surely would not make it. I think these people are shooting deer, as well as rabbits and anything they can eat. What makes them special that they can shoot everything that is out of season? If I catch them doing this, I will turn them in.

OVERPOPULATION The only real way to solve the pollution and trashing of the earth's environment is to have fewer people on the planet. Overpopulation is the source of the problems, and until people stop having more than two kids, the problems are only going to get worse. That is why there are over 8 billion people on earth. Magazines can publish good ideas and suggestions, which is fine, but in the end, it is too many people are the basic problem.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Rising Food Costs Prices on so many necessary items have gone up over the past six months. Most worrisome is food. Of all the grocery store price increases, beef and veal went up the most. But they've all gone up: bread, seafood, cereal, vegetables. Fresh fruit, on the other hand, reportedly went down (although not at my store), as did milk (again, not at my store, which saw a ridiculous increase). It likely won't get better for the rest of the year. What hasn't gone up is our income. In fact, for those seniors who had part-time jobs to supplement Social Security, incomes have gone down because of the loss of those jobs. Yes, many of us got that $1,200 stimulus check ... how many months ago? For so many of us, the time has come to admit that we need help. It's not easy, but it's really not giving up any independence. There are many organizations and groups out there giving away food. Have you seen the lines of cars waiting for food pickups? The trunks of those vehicles get loaded with bags and boxes of food, gallons of milk, sacks of potatoes, frozen meat and fresh bakery goods. Other groups focus on seniors and deliver individual boxes of food to the door. Don't jeopardize your health because of lack of food. Pick up the phone, make calls. Find out where the free or low-cost food is in your area. Call the senior center, all the churches, the food pantry and your state's National Council on Aging (www.ncoa.org). Get on the internet and look for seniors dining sites and Meals on Wheels, senior food boxes, Commodity Supplemental Food Program and "free food for seniors in (your state)." This pandemic might last for a very long time. Get your food support system in place. It's one less thing to worry about.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Dogs Can’t Tolerate HumanBug Repellen PAW’S CORNER: I live in an area where eastern equine encephalitis and West Nile Virus are active. On my walks, I make sure to wear plenty of bug spray to prevent being bitten by a mosquito infected with either disease. Are my dogs at risk of catching it? Can I use bug spray on their fur? -- Shellie in Worcester, Massachusetts DEAR SHELLIE: While dogs (and cats) are at risk of catching either disease, most pets recover fully, especially with veterinary treatment (which is mainly supportive, to keep them strong while their bodies fight the infection). Humans can get seriously ill from either EEE or West Nile Virus, so I’m glad you’re using plenty of bug repellent. Mosquitoes are very active just before sunset, when most of us prefer to take our pets for walks during the hot summer months. However, pets do not tolerate bug spray made for humans very well. (Citronella candles also can be very irritating.) They still should have some protection from mosquitoes, as these flying pests also carry diseases that can be very harmful to pets, like heartworm. Pet-friendly repellents are available at the pet store or through your vet’s office. You can try natural repellents like lemon juice (try mixing it half-and-half with water in a spray bottle and applying to your dogs’ coat just before walking), crushed peppermint leaves, or rosemary. Keep up with your pets’ heartworm medication and check them for ticks and fleas after each walk, too. This will reduce their risk of getting a serious illness from an outdoor pest. Al Fresco Dining Eyes Upcoming Wintery Weather BY AMANDA DUDEK
R
estaurants across Upstate New York, and in fact the nation, have been hit hard by COVID-19 shutdowns. Now, as many fine dining establishments have finally been able to reopen their doors to a mere 25-50% of their capacity, restaurateurs are facing a worrying nip in the air. From the Downtown areas of Greater Rochester to our historic small-town Main Streets, solutions are being sought for the upcoming fall and winter holidays, important seasons which could spell the difference between success and closed doors. Local restaurant owner Jay Speranza of Tony D’s in Rochester is, in fact, “very much” concerned about the upcoming colder weather. “I am open to any ideas to try to increase capacity,” he said. Others like Steve Foster and Tim Adams of the Red Osier Landmark Restaurant in Stafford are blessed with the space to host their patrons inside while remaining socially distanced and safe. Yet even restaurant owners who are not particularly concerned, like Richard Mogab of Texas Bar-B-Q Joint (Greece, Rochester, Spencerport) said that while he does not currently have cold weather outdoor dining plans in place, he would be interested in learning more about them. Possible cold weather answers are filtering in from all over, including Chicago. The Windy City, keenly aware of its impending inclement weather, has launched a Winter Dining Challenge in partnership with the Illinois Restaurant Association, BMO Harris Bank, and design company IDEO. Chicagoans have been asked to submit their best solutions for safe, cold weather dining as they vie for prizes of up to $5,000. The results have been both remarkable and inspiring. One answer to the cold weather quandary is to construct additional spaces outdoors. Possibilities for what this might look like range from luxury domes geodesic structures resembling glass igloos to “smart glass” boxes which allow users to control the temperature via the amount of light coming through to cubic pods. Square or rectangular outdoor pods, raised and heated, can be combined to accommodate varying party numbers. These typically come in kits and can also be very adaptable to limited square footage such as a particular option designed for restaurant parking areas. Two such units can fit in each parking space! Offering easy set up and often more privacy, tents, yurts, tee-pees, and cubes of fabric are also viable options. Heat, of course, depends on structure. Perforated fabric walls can be combined with forced air wall partitions which essentially push heated air down, preventing the flow of air in from outside the space. To solve heat issues without forced air, one Chicagoan suggested drawing in exhaust from existing kitchen equipment. Tents and yurts also provide shelter from the elements. Yurts, most associated with traditional Mongolian round tents, covered with a thick, weather-resistant material supported by rafters and a lattice structure which culminate at a central roof ring. Similarly, teepees made of similar materials and supported poles can be minimally heated to provide nearly instantaneous outdoor dining.

In the face of a particularly frigid winter season, ice bars, a tradition most associated with colder European climes, presents flexible and fun possibilities. These drinking and even dining spaces carved from ice are unexpectedly cozy since the ice functions as an insulator. Attractive, novel and all but guaranteed to draw a crowd, ice eateries can be structured to suit, perhaps even into ice pods. Rather than creating new outdoor spaces, some suggest the necessary structures are already available, advocating for a more “mobile” approach. Eying underutilized city buses, these innovators recommend converting them along with train cars into pop up dining spaces. These mobile mini restaurants would pick up additional diners and park in front of restaurants from which passengers can then order. Buses and train cars which are no longer functional can be remodeled to serve as extensions of existing restaurants. Some innovations recommend embracing the great outdoors, even when temperatures drop. In keeping with the festive feel of the season, select downtown areas and local Main Streets could close to traffic and transform into bustling holiday wonderlands. Food trucks and vendors could be brought in. Patios and other outdoor dining areas could be warmed with heat lamps and air curtains. “S” shaped dividers with fire pits could be arranged down the center of the street for increased warmth and seating. Heating could also be centered at the seating itself. Hot stone bowls and plates would add to the ambiance while combating the cold. Chairs with heated cushions and reusable chemical heat pads could be set around tables with small fire pits in their centers, providing additional light for diners while enjoy increased warmth. Patrons could also be warmed bottom to top with Japanese Kotatsu. These heated tables consist of a platform over which a thick blanket or futon has been placed. On its center above rests a tabletop, while an electric heater underneath the frame keeps seated guests nice and toasty. A chill in the air is inevitable, and the cooler weather brings with it opportunities for innovation, creativity and novelty, a sure recipe for success. After months of shutdowns and restrictions, families across the Greater Rochester Area are eager for the chance to get out and enjoy their communities once again. Creating novel and safe environments thanks to continued outdoor dining can give families the experience they crave while providing local restaurants with the revenue they seriously need.

Leaky windows and doorways can cost homeowners money year-round, allowing cold air to escape on hot summer afternoons and letting cold air in on brisk winter nights. When such leaks aren’t fixed, homeowners are more liable to turn up their air conditioners or heaters, unnecessarily padding their energy bills along the way. Before winter arrives, check areas around windows and door frames for leaks, as well as any additional openings, such as chimneys, that may allow cold air in. Use caulk or weather strips to plug these leaks, and enjoy your warmer home and lower energy bills as winter weather gets colder and colder.

REMEDY LANDSCAPE DRAINAGE PROBLEMS Gutters and downspouts are designed to move rainwater away from the home. Too often, however, gutters and downspouts become clogged or do not work effectively. Overflowing gutters will transfer rainwater down the side of a home, where it can puddle at the foundation. This water can ultimately suffocate a lawn, and it may cause interior damage to the home as well. First, inspect and clean all gutters. Leaves, nests, sticks, and even dead animals can block the flow of water in a gutter. Test downspouts by running hose water from the top of the gutter. Downspouts should be pointed away from the home and may need to be extended so they direct water away from the dwelling. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

According to the Merck Manual, a reference book for physicians and patients alike, heat works against inflammation by increasing blood flow and making connective tissues more flexible. Heat also can be used to combat edema, a condition characterized by an excess of fluid in the tissues of the body. Upon application, heat can temporarily reduce pain and alleviate stiffness in the joints. Heat also may temporarily relieve muscles spasms. The Cleveland Clinic notes that heat can be effective at relieving pain associated with worn-away cartilage in the joints because it eases chronically stiff joints and relaxes tight muscles. In addition, moist heat can relax painful neck spasms linked to nerves or blood vessels in the head or pain emanating from muscles in the neck. Heat can be applied via hot packs, infrared heat, paraffin baths, and hydrotherapy.

RELIEVE STRESS THROUGHOUT THE DAY Walk away. The APA notes that taking a break from a stressor is one of a handful of healthy techniques that research has indicated is a successful way to reduce stress, both in the short- and long-term. If a project at work is proving especially stressful, step away for a short period of time to do something else, whether it’s to go for a brief walk or converse with a coworker about something unrelated to the project. Avoiding the stress entirely, especially if it’s a work project or a bill that must be paid, is not the answer. But a short break from the stressor and thinking about it can provide a new perspective and time to calm down.

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * “In my shop, I have stored small bits of hardware in baby-food jars. They were all on a shelf together, and when I needed one, I would have to move bottles around until I found the right one. I took a piece of 1-by-4 and cut it into 2-foot sections. Then I glued the bottoms of the bottles in a row to the wood. Now, they still sit on the shelf, but all I have to do is slide the 1-by-4s out and find the right jar. I can still see in the sides, and it makes them so much easier to deal with.” -- J.N in Missouri
Taking steps to be more efficient at work can allow businesses and their employees to thrive while ensuring as little time as possible is wasted.
* “My child has so many toys that they were starting to take over his room and our house. We got three big plastic storage tubs and distributed the toys among them. Now the rule is that only one tub can be open at a time, so if he wants to play with other toys, he must pick up all the toys from the tub he is playing with first. It has made such a difference since the house gets picked up at least once a day.” -- C.I. in Tennessee * Here’s a boating safety tip: Make sure you check the weather before you head out for a day on the water. And everyone needs a life vest, large or small! * “Lots of people are selling things online now to make a few bucks, and that’s cool. I know I have things I’ve picked up that I don’t use. Why not make a little money? Here’s a tip though: Do a little research on price for your item. You want to avoid listing it for too much (no interest) or too little (yes, it gets snapped up quickly, but you could have gotten more for it). A little homework goes a long way.” -- C.A. in Florida * No red wine for your recipe? You can substitute an equal amount of grape juice or beef broth in most recipes. EMPLOYMENT

WAYS ESTABLISHED PROFESSIONALS CAN IMPROVE THEIR RÉSUMÉS
NOW HIRING!
Rather than focusing on job responsibilities at each job you held, gear the résumé around what you achieved in each position. This will help identify how you performed in the position, instead of just a general retelling of what you did. It can be challenging to achieve this for jobs that don’t naturally lend themselves to numerically quantitative results (i.e., increased department sales by 15 percent), but it’s still possible to use a résumé to illustrate your achievements. Rather than state that you were responsible for providing customer service, explain that you built your reputation on conveying difficult technical terms to the layperson, serving as the go-to employee for translating job jargon for outside correspondence. If you have quantitative proof of how you accomplished something, certainly add it. This can include measures of profit growth, reduction of debt or increase in customer base.

Workloads may be hefty on both fronts, and the pursuit of a healthy balance between home and career may seem like an unattainable goal. Stress can build from feelings of being pulled in too many directions. According to Mental Health America, stress can compromise a person’s ability to concentrate, lead to feelings of irritability or depression, negatively affect personal relationships, and weaken immune systems, increasing a person’s susceptibility to a variety of ailments. Research even indicates chronic stress may double a person’s risk of having a heart attack. The desire to have a fulfilling career and a full life at home is a goal shared by millions of people across the globe. But it’s important that one’s pursuit of such goals not come at the expense of personal health. Finding the right balance between work and family requires some maneuvering and practice, but it can be achieved with planning, organization and communication. EMPLOYMENT
