Scholarships come in different forms and are usually offered to students as a gift to be put toward college or university costs. Some schools offer scholarships, while other scholarships are sponsored by outside organizations.
HOW COLLEGE STUDENTS CAN CUT LIVING EXPENSES The cost of college tuition is a concern for many college-bound students and their families. The cost of a college education continues to rise, but it’s not just tuition and room and board that students and their families must account for. College students may underestimate cost-of-living expenses when planning their school-year budgets. But such expenses can be substantial, catching even the most well-prepared students off guard. Fortunately, there are several ways for college students to save money on living expenses and still make the most of their time on campus.

SIMPLE WAYS TO WINTERIZE YOUR HOME When temperatures get especially low, pipes with water still in them can freeze and burst, potentially leading to significant water damage. When you no longer need to water the lawn and when temperatures get too cold to wash your car in the driveway, be sure to shut off the water supply to outdoor spigots and sprinkler systems. Once you do that, drain them so no water is sitting in the pipes when temperatures dip.

Mask Makers: COVID’s Everyday Heroes: Part I BY AMANDA DUDEK
T
o wear masks or not to wear masks has become the question lately. No matter where you stand there is no denying the care and selflessness shown by those at home who gave, and continue to give, their time, resources and talents to make masks for those in need. Five of these unsung heroes in Livingston and Ontario Counties open up about their maskmaking journeys. Linda Richards – York
When the pandemic resulted in a shutdown, Personal Trainer Linda Richards went from working 16-hour days to having a great deal of free time. “I thought, what do I do Linda Richards (right) made many headbands with my life?” said and masks with lots of help from Linda only half-joking. Linda Nicastro (left)! “I needed to help at a time when I felt helpless.” She began making headbands and straps with buttons to relieve ears from mask straps. “We called it Save the Ears!” she said. Linda’s efforts soon caught on. “I made 25 buttoned headbands to start with,” she recalled. “People found them via Facebook and word-ofmouth and began asking for them.” Almost immediately, a lack of supplies and closed stores became an issue; help came from across state lines. “I had a Facebook friend who reached out and began sending me headbands and other materials from Texas,” shared Linda. “Some people sewed a few, as well.”
These headbands, made by Linda Richards, have buttons sewn on them to relieve ears from mask straps!
Now, Linda, with a lot of help from a friend, has made over 1,000 headbands. She has sent them all over the country and to Puerto Rico. “We have used some unique and unusual buttons, so sometimes, we will see someone wearing a headband we are pretty sure is ours. I also just made headbands for kids who are going back to school. It was fun!”
fabric.” Deborah is continuing to make masks while there is need. “I have connected with different organizations, put some in shops and have people stop by,” she explained. Deborah welcomes anyone in need to reach out to her. Karen Schenk – Naples Across the Livingston-Ontario County line in Naples lives Karen Schenk. When she saw masks being Deborah Wolfanger displays sold for high prices, Karen knew she some of the numerous, had to do something to help people in colorful masks she has made! need, especially those who didn’t have extra money. Her clever solution would help in more ways than one. “A friend encouraged me to make some masks, and it just went viral,” explained Karen. “I posted a picture, and everyone loved them. So, I began giving the masks away for free, and asking people to donate whatever they could for me to give to Naples Angels, an organization which helps those in the community who are struggling to pay their bills.
Karen has raised more than $300 for Naples Angels. Her masks can now be found at Joseph’s Market in Naples with the profits continuing to support the local organization, although they frequently sell out more quickly than she can make them. She plans to continue making them as long as people request them. “It is so rewarding to be able to help people in need, both those who need masks and those who need help paying their One of Karen Schenk’s masks made with bills.” material from Sutton Spoons in Naples!

Deborah Wolfanger – Dansville Quietly, outside the Village of Dansville, Deborah Wolfanger works steadily making masks. She offers them for free of charge to anyone in need and welcomes people to stop by for masks. In fact, she donated over 120 of them to a local hygiene bank. “There was a need,” said Deborah. “The community has been so giving, and those who have received masks have been so thankful.”

WALGREENS IS THE BEST! Mary Ann is always so nice and kind at the checkout counter. She was one of the main reasons why I started going to Walgreen’s in Brockport. She is very capable when it comes to voiding items that will not be accepted on my insurance card. Not only does she do her job very well, but she is always very pleasant. From what I have experienced since shopping at Walgreens for the past 10 months, they seem to train their employees not only to do an excellent job, but also to treat their customers the way customers should be
treated. Keep up the good work! It does not go unnoticed, and it is very much appreciated, especially during these difficult times. Thank you!
MUSIC My suggestion to the person who hates neighbor playing music is to re-locate in the country where you will not have to contend with anyone and anything. Do dogs barking bother you? How about children in a neighbor’s yard? You should be ashamed of yourself for complaining about such a trivial thing. There are so many more serious issues in this world. Consider yourself blessed if the worst thing your neighbors are doing is playing music. Perhaps if you listen to some music, it will bring you much needed relief for whatever is going on in your mind.

community in the proposed space? Don’t talk the talk unless you can walk the walk. PLEASE BE CONSIDERATE I have to wonder why some customers can’t follow store rules during this pandemic. Working as a cashier at a retail store, I too often need to ask people to keep their distance from a current customer and to stand back and wait to be called up to the register. Too many times, I get berated by customers who can’t read the signs or follow instructions. If you can follow these rules in a grocery store, why is it so hard to also do it in a retail store? The cost of a college education continues to rise. The College Board says the average cost of tuition and fees for the 2015-2016 school year was $32,405 at private colleges, $9,410 for state residents at public colleges, and $23,893 for out-of-state residents attending public universities. The high cost of education compels many students to find ways to finance their education. STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * The original time machine in “Back to the Future” was not a DeLorean, but an old refrigerator. According to HuffPost, “Ultimately, it was determined that it probably was not a good idea to use a refrigerator in such a manner as kids might want to reenact the scene.” * Napoleon introduced brass buttons on soldier uniforms’ sleeves to discourage them from wiping their noses. * According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the stickers on fruit are edible. We haven’t tried them ourselves, though.
Magic Maze END OF TIME
DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a strong history of premature heart disease in my family, and I have been having some unpleasant side effects of blood pressure medicine. I decided to try a completely plant-based diet: grains, vegetables, legumes, fruit, seeds and nuts. After about a month on the new diet, my total cholesterol dropped 44 points to 159, and the other numbers went from borderline to normal, as measured by my cardiologist. My blood pressure, which was often high in the mornings (typically 150+/90), was 118/68 this morning. I’ve only lost about 5 pounds in the past couple of months, and I’m probably still 8-10 pounds overweight. I am pleased with the results, but why didn’t any of my doctors recommend this? -- J.S.B. ANSWER: Diet is a powerful tool for improving overall health, especially heart health. I believe it is underemphasized by most physicians. Changing from a meat-based diet to a mostly plant-based diet often prompts improvements in blood pressure, cholesterol and weight. Your results are better than most, but by no means unheard of. You haven’t said how you feel, but many people feel more energetic as well. Many others are able to come off of some (occasionally all) of their medications, which of course reduces side effects. Why don’t physicians recommend it? I think it’s a combination of reasons. Some doctors don’t realize how powerful the effects of dietary change can be. A good deal of patients are highly resistant to making changes, so physicians are used to their dietary advice failing. Also, taking the time to get an accurate diet history is hard, personalizing dietary advice is harder, and writing a prescription is easy. It is not necessary to have a 100% vegan diet like yours to experience a benefit. A mostly plant-based diet has substantial benefits. It’s easier for some people to make incremental changes. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I’ve been taking Viagra for several years with good results for my wife and me. Recently my prescription drug coverage administrator has begun restricting my access to 12 pills every 30 days. I’ve requested an explanation from the company without success. My prescription is written by my heart doctor, and he is not aware of any reason to restrict my access to Viagra. Is there some danger in taking Viagra (sildenafil) on a regular basis? The literature supplied with the prescription, from Pfizer, does not indicate a limit on use. I’d appreciate your feedback on this, as it will affect my wife’s and my happiness. -- J.R. ANSWER: The insurance company isn’t worried about your safety: Sildenafil (Viagra) and similar drugs are safe for daily use in most people, and your cardiologist is certainly the right person to make that determination, not your insurance company. Instead, the drug limits are there to save money for the insurance company. People can make up their own minds about whether that is reasonable or not, but it is a near-universal finding now. One way many patients get around this (if they are taking 25 mg or 50 mg) is to get the larger-size tablet and cut it in half (a pill cutter can do this well), since the limit is on the number of tablets, not the number of milligrams. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Treating a Scratch Under a Dog’s Fur DEAR PAW’S CORNER:
I took my Springer Spaniel, “Rog,” for a walk in the woods this morning. When we got back, I noticed he was trying to lick a spot behind his shoulder. I found a thin scratch on his skin. I dabbed it with some antibacterial ointment, but that’s about it. Will he be OK? -- Jessica in Jaffrey, New Hampshire
DEAR JESSICA: As long as the wound seems to
be healing, Rog should be fine. Check the area once a day and reapply antibacterial ointment. If it begins to appear puffy and red, or Rog seems very distressed by it, take him to the vet for further evaluation. Most minor scratches on a dog’s skin and paws can be treated at home using the household first-aid kit. You also can build a pet first-aid kit that is easy to access when you walk into the house. In addition to antibacterial ointment (avoid products with hydrocortisone), it should have antiseptic solution, water-based lubricant like KY (not Vaseline), clean towels, an empty squeeze bottle (like a ketchup bottle), tick-removal tweezers, a muzzle, small scissors and a disposable razor to gently remove fur. (Electric clippers are an even safer option.) To treat a small scratch or cut, fill the squeeze bottle with lukewarm water. Hold your dog securely, placing a muzzle on him to prevent bites if he gets agitated. Trim or shave away hair from the area. Gently clean the wound using the squeeze bottle of water. Pat dry. Dab the antiseptic onto the wound, then apply antibiotic ointment. Cover lightly with a bandage if possible; otherwise, prevent your dog from licking away the ointment for at least 10 minutes. Check and reapply ointment daily as it heals. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Gaylan Harold Barber “Goose” September 7, 2020 Gaylan “Goose” Harold Barber, 66, passed away suddenly Monday, September 7, 2020 at his home in Concord, North Carolina.
Caring for you and the community since 2001.
Goose was born September 24, 1953 in Rhode Island to James Franklin Barber and Betty Lou Russell Barber. He was preceded in death by his father, James Barber.
585.286.3664 SouthsideHearingCenter.com
He lived most of his life in Atlanta, NY. He realized a life long dream 4 years ago when he and his wife Verna moved to North Carolina. Verna and Goose were married November 25, 1988 and celebrated 32 years of marriage.
GO GREEN WITH YOUR FITNESS ROUTINE
During his career Goose worked for Meyer Farms, Kreider Trucking, Gary Clark Trucking, Dyckman Farms, Jim Wallace Farms, Kanaval’s Gravel Pit, Wolcott Farms and Almonds Farm, retiring from the Town of Cohocton Highway Department.
Delivering The Freedom Of Choice
Walk, run or ride to the gym. Many people get the bulk, if not the entirety, of their exercise at a gym. For those who live outside of major cities, that likely involves driving to and from a gym before and after workouts. Instead of driving, consider walking, running or riding to the gym. Each option provides great cardiovascular exercise that can reduce or replace the time people spend on treadmills or elliptical machines. And cutting back on driving reduces fuel consumption and auto emissions, greatly benefitting the planet.
He was a life long member of the Hatch Hose Fire Company in Atlanta, New York. Goose was a man who worked hard but also loved spending time with his family. He had a soft spot for his dogs, Herk, Josie, Dom, and Buddy, who will greatly miss him. Survivors include his wife, Verna Diana Barber, children: Christa (Dave) Inzinna, Meredith (Bill) Weidman, Melissa (Steve) Waldoch, and Kevin Dewey. Grandchildren: Kirsten Schenk, Shelby and Emily Inzinna, Jon and Jacob Weidman, and Hailey and Hannah Dewey. Great-Granddaughters: Isabella and Riley Jett. Siblings: Gary Barber, Mike ( June) Barber, Tom (Patty) Barber, Paula Wheaton, and Al (Vicky) Barber. Brothers and Sister-in-laws: John Wheaton, Della Ward, Rose (Steve) Parks, Ted Wheaton, Anna (Paul) Fuller. Nieces and Nephews; Jordan (Lisa) Pelton, Ashley (Eric) Barber, Michael (Casey) Barber, Tyler Barber, Erin Barber, Rachel (David) Barber, Ryan Barber, Alisha ( Justin) Barber, Ashton (Matt) Barber and Mickey Barber. Lori ( John), Jennifer, Robin (Nick), Tricia, Tera, Keith (Brandy), Lisa ( Joe), Wanda, Terry, and Bruce. Along with several great nieces and nephews. Goose was also great friends and had the utmost respect for his mentors Joe and Phylis Meyer. A Memorial service will be held at the Hatch Hose Fire Co. in Atlanta, NY on September 20, 2020 at 1 O’Clock in the afternoon. Contributions can be made to the Hornell Humane Society, 7649 Industrial Dr., Hornell, NY 14808. Atlanta Hatch Hose Fire Department, University Ave., Atlanta, NY 14808. Hartsell Funeral Home of Concord is serving the Barber family. The family was also assisted by St. George Forsythe Funeral Home. Online condolences may be made at: www.hartsellfh.com
