25th Cupboard Craft Sale to Impact Rush-Henrietta Charity BY KIMBERLY LONG
T
wenty-five years is quite the accomplishment for an event, especially considering some of the conflicts that arose due to the pandemic these last two years. We are excited to share that the 25th annual Cupboard Craft Sale will be a two-day event, taking place on Saturday, October 9th from 9am to 5pm, as well as on Sunday, October 10th from 9am to 3pm. Thanks to the Henrietta Recreation Center, located at 605 Calkins Road in Henrietta, this event has a secure location in which to continue their many years of community service. The Cupboard Craft Sale is important because it supports the RHAFT (Rush-Henrietta Area Food Terminal). The RHAFT has been the community’s emergency food cupboard since 1979. RHAFT receives calls from people facing an emergency, who need help providing food for their families. Donations to RHAFT stay local, helping residents living within the Rush-Henrietta Central School District. After an interview, RHAFT volunteers package and deliver emergency food for a specific number of days to those who qualify for assistance. It is more important now than ever to pay attention to those in need, especially with the crisis our world has endured over the last couple of years. Even the area’s younger neighbors are taking part. The Youth Asset Team, under the Henrietta Recreation Department, is a group of young Rush-Henrietta area volunteers who participate in this yearly event, along with middle and high school students from the area. “This gives area youth a true sense of community service by helping the vendors load and unload their equipment and merchandise for the sale,” said Donna McGovern, one of the event organizers. This year, McGovern expects that about 20 youth will be there to help with the event. Over the years, more than $110,000 and almost 3,000 boxes of nonperishable groceries have gone to RHAFT from the Cupboard Craft Sale. All application fees from the more than 50 vendors go directly to RHAFT as a donation, along with any cash donations given by the members of the community. For admission, attendees are kindly asked to bring any nonperishable groceries, which will be collected at the door for RHAFT. Anyone who forgets groceries can make a cash donation which also goes to RHAFT, so that perishable groceries‚ such as bread, milk, and eggs‚ can be purchased when needed. This year’s Cupboard Craft Sale is possible thanks to the hard work of co-organizers, Donna McGovern and Sandy Junge, and the donation of the venue by the Henrietta Recreation Department. Expected finds include crafts from local vendors ranging from jewelry and metal work to bird houses and baby blankets. All are invited to stop by and check out the many wonderful, handmade items for sale on October 9th and 10th! - Donna McGovern

Be mindful when filling up your tank. Many people do not pay much attention to their surroundings when pulling into the filling station. But when you fill up can impact your car’s life expectancy. Perhaps the worst time to fill your tank is when the fuel tanker is in the gas station refilling the underground tanks. That’s because the process of filling the underground tanks can stir up sediment that had settled at the bottom of those tanks. If that sediment finds its way into your vehicle’s gas tank, it can clog filters and fuel injectors and negatively affect the vehicle’s performance. So unless your car is running on empty, avoid refilling its gas tank when the tanker is still in the station. AUTO SECTION

* Have your carpets cleaned. Hightraffic areas may require cleaning as often as every three or four months, but bedrooms can go as long as 18 months. Use runners and area rugs to safeguard spots that may be vulnerable, like under a vanity or by your sofas. * “I had some residue on my bathroom ceiling from hard water condensation. I happened to have a set of crutches lying around. I used a hair elastic to secure a hand towel to the arm rest of one crutch. Then I sprayed it with water and used it to scrub the ceiling. It worked really well. I was done in no time.” -- A.A. in Florida * Two ways to remove a bandage: Rub a little baby oil or vegetable oil over it. The oil will soak in and make it easier to remove. Or -- and this works especially well with kids -- have them soak in the bath and use baby shampoo to soften the sticky edges. * A baking soda and water mix is great for tile floors if you want a quick mop up. If a lot of your floors are tile, do yourself a favor and invest in a steam mop. They clean and sanitize, leaving your floors brilliant. * Be sure you use a trivet or other protectant when placing flowerpots on wood floors. Also, purchase felt pads for the bottoms of furniture. This will eliminate divots or other kinds of depressions or scratches in the floor. * “Tiny tears in your window screen can be secured with clear nail polish. I dab the spot, then use tweezers to line up the tiny wires, then dab again. Just make sure the window is open, or the screen might stick to the windowpane.” -- T.T. in Indiana

SOY FOODS PACK A POWERFUL PUNCH The Cleveland Clinic notes that soy foods provide a host of nutritional benefits. Plant protein, including soy, can provide cardiovascular benefits, including helping with people with high blood pressure lower their blood pressure to healthier levels. While many people rely on animal-based proteins to get their daily recommended intake of protein, soy foods are naturally free of cholesterol and low in saturated fats. That makes soy foods more heart-healthy sources of protein than animal products. The Cleveland Clinic says substituting soy foods for animal-based proteins a few times per week can reduce a person’s risk for cardiovascular disease. Soy foods also can be a great source of dietary fiber, though the U.S. Soybean Export Council advises consumers that not all soy products are the same. The USSEC notes that foods like soy milk and tofu contain very little fiber. People who want to utilize soy beans as a source of dietary fiber should look to foods that utilize the whole bean, such tempeh, soy flour and textured soy protein. The USSEC also notes there’s some confusion in regard to the connection between soy foods and iron, though the group admits research is ongoing. While a 1/2 cup serving of cooked soybeans contains four milligrams of iron, the phytate and soy protein present in soy foods reduce iron absorption, meaning that the body won’t really benefit from the iron. However, the USSEC recommends consumers purchase fermented soy foods, including tempeh and miso, because the body might absorb more iron from these foods than it will when consuming other types soy foods. TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
High Blood Pressure Can Thicken Heart Wall ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: What is the difference between eccentric LVH and concentric LVH? Which one is more dangerous and needs more attention? My mother was diagnosed with severe eccentric LVH for body surface area with adequate systolic and diastolic functions. What does that mean? -- C.F. ANSWER: The left ventricle is the chamber of the heart that pumps blood to the entire body, except for through the lungs; that is the job of the right ventricle. When the job is too hard, usually because of high blood pressure, the left ventricle hypertrophies, meaning its walls get thicker as a response to the increased workload. That hypertrophy can be symmetrical (concentric) or asymmetrical (eccentric). Early on, the left ventricle can still do its two jobs despite the hypertrophy: It can push out all the blood the body needs (that’s the systolic function), and relax under low pressure (that’s the diastolic function). Your mother has adequate systolic and diastolic function, so she is not in heart failure at this time. If LVH is not treated, it tends to get worse. Usually the diastolic function fails first, and the left ventricle, being thick and stiff, requires higher pressure to relax properly and allow the blood to flow in from the left atrium. The major symptom of diastolic heart failure (now called “heart failure with preserved ejection fraction,” or HF-pEF) is shortness of breath, especially with exertion. Some people may progress to having both systolic and diastolic failure (“heart failure with reduced ejection fraction,” HF-rEF), where fatigue becomes a major symptom. Swelling of the legs and increasing nighttime urination are additional symptoms. It’s not good to have either eccentric or concentric LVH, but cardiac physiologists note that concentric LVH gives the heart less ability to adapt to increased stress and has a worse prognosis. Both situations need to be treated as rapidly as possible to allow the heart to return to a more normal state. Blood pressure reduction -- whether through diet, weight loss, salt restriction, stress management, pharmacologic therapy or a combination -- is the primary treatment. Some blood pressure medications are more effective than others in helping the heart return to a more normal state, and high blood pressure experts often choose agents that are more effective in those people with LVH, especially concentric LCH, on echocardiogram. ACE inhibitors and beta blockers are typically a part of first-line treatment.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

Annuals won’t be coming back in spring, so it’s best to remove ones that are no longer producing from the garden before the arrival of winter. Doing so can prevent the onset of fungal diseases that may adversely affect the garden in spring.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
• Yes, absolutely!
Why Risk Buying a Pet Overseas?
• No way!
RAKING LEAVES: W hile raking leaves might not jump out at you as a great w ay to spend a nice fall afternoon, families often find raking leaves together soon turns into a fun day in the yard. Build leaf piles and let the kids jump in, and then do it again. W hen raking, encourage kids to collect some colorful leaves and set them aside. Once the raking is done, you can then enjoy making some homemade crafts w ith the leaves you and your youngsters just collected.
Poll Ends 09-28-21
--DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m writing in response to your recent article about pet imports from overseas being banned. Potential pet owners may be frustrated by this rule, but what is their reason for going outside the country? Most likely, they want to purchase a purebred dog at a lower price. Buying a dog overseas is very risky. The countries mentioned in the temporary ban are listed for a reason. Often the breeding is poor, and standards are low. A country’s culture can play a role. They learn what is wanted, they produce, and you buy. The old saying, “You get what you pay for,” applies here. Many owners end up spending more in vet bills than they saved on an overseas dog. The risk is yours. There are many good breeders in the U.S., but they’re not always easy to find. The U.S. is not perfect and has poor breeders too. But certain standards must be met, and it will show in a so-so breeder. Three things to look for are: 1. Sanitary conditions. If the place you visit smells at all, go no further. 2. Do puppies live in the house and not in a kennel? The best of breeders will not replace human contact from birth. 3. Selling too soon. Baby animals need their mothers. A good pup has stayed with its mother ideally for 11 or 12 weeks. Anyone willing to sell under 8 weeks should raise your eyebrow. The American Kennel Club has good representatives taking calls. They are often breeders themselves and can guide you to your choice of breed. Why not get the best and safest dog? It’s important to trust your breeder. Be safe -- buy American! -- Colleen R., via email

[T]hat old September feeling... of summer passing, vacation nearly done, obligations gathering, books and football in the air.... Another fall, another turned page: there was something of jubilee in that annual autumnal beginning, as if last year’s mistakes and failures had been wiped clean by summer.

Rocks, really? To the person ranting about the painted rocks: There is so much bashing and hate in this world, and you pick this to rant about? If you don’t like them, pass by and let someone else find them. I love them!
S E V RA Not so finicky A recent rave thanked the Penny Saver carriers for avoiding the delivery tube where a wren was building a nest. The writer was a kind birdwatcher but is misinformed about wrens. Male wrens identify several possible nesting locations and start building a nest in each. Then, when they meet a mate, they bring the female to each nest. She selects the one she likes the best. The nest in the tube wasn’t a sad tale of a female abandoning her work. It was a suitor trying to impress, and she liked one of his other homes better. Watching grass grow Watching grass grow is much more exciting than it sounds when it is your lawn! Thank you so much to the generous volunteers at Habitat for Humanity of Livingston County and to the young SUNY Geneseo college student who came out to prepare, seed, and straw my yard a few weeks ago. The new green grass is looking good! - Grateful Habitat Homeowner Thanks for the stories! I’d like to thank Amanda Dudek for all of her great articles she writes in the Penny Saver. Keep up the great work, Amanda! Patriot Day Thanks Thank you to those responsible for the beautiful 9/11 Ceremony at the Circle in Avon. It was wonderful to see our Veterans, EMTs, Firemen & LEOs, the Patriot Guard, St. Agnes School students and community members all pause and remember. Beautiful rendition of our national anthem too. Thank you. Honesty wins! Last Saturday, we went to the Land of the Legends Raceway in Canandaigua. When we were about to leave, we realized my boyfriend’s driver’s license was missing, so we started looking for it. He went to the booth to see if someone had turned in a driver’s license, and it was there! What a relief! We would like to say thank you so much to the stranger who found the driver’s license and returned it to the booth. We appreciate your honesty!
Going to the dogs I am afraid that my apartment complex is going to the dogs. Maybe they should just turn the place into a daycare center since there are always kids around. Whatever happened to the different activities that used to go on? If the office doesn’t want to be bothered doing anything, then maybe let someone else handle activities. Thank God we have a great maintenance crew! They are always on top of everything when they know about it.
How low can you get? During the last few weeks, our gas has been stolen out of our cars and trucks. You are going around our town and doing this. We aren’t the first. A local roadside stand has fruits and veggies that are being taken, too. Your pictures is being taken, so make sure you smile when you do these things. You need to get a job and a life. Stop doing these bad things. In case you don’t know, the people you are stealing from are retired and handicapped. You may think this is a joke, but it’s not. You will pay the consequences. My advice to you is to get a job and be a human, not a thief. May God have pity on you if you get caught. - Resident of this Little Town

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Budget to Stay Busy, Not Bored This Winter This winter is not going to be a repeat of last year, at least not at my house. COVID will no doubt keep raging around the world, limiting our options for activities, canceling plans that were made with fingers crossed. But here at home I’m going to be busy, not bored. I’ve decided to spend a little mental health money that in a normal world I would have used for meals out, a few new outfits and maybe a couple of weekends away at a very nice hotel in the next state. To make up for the disappointments, I’ve renewed my Amazon Prime, not only for the free shipping but for the movies and videos I can watch for free. There are hundreds of documentaries, including ones on travel, giving me great views of places I can’t currently go. There are thousands of movies and television series I can watch with my Roku device. And then there are the books, sent instantly to my Kindle, with font sizes I can change in a moment. If I’m in the mood for British television and movies, Adobe.tv has a big selection (even Australian!), only costing a few dollars per month. BritBox is nearly as good as Adobe, at almost the same price. I’m looking at an inexpensive exercise bike, possibly a recumbent one. These allow all the movements of riding a bicycle, but there is a seat back to lean against and two handles to hold. (If there is no space for a bike, there are pedal machines that can be used while seated in a chair.) And then there are the arts and crafts to fill the long days. I searched online for crafts for adults and found thousands of kits, including several types I’d never tried before. Some of them, if they turn out well, might end up being holiday gifts I won’t have to shop for! (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

DID YOU KNOW? Brief breaks during the work day can dramatically improve one’s ability to focus on a task. A 2011 study published in the journal Cognition found that brief mental breaks can improve focus on a prolonged task. The study’s authors tested participants’ ability to focus on a repetitive computerized task for 50 minutes under various conditions. The control group performed the task without breaks or diversions. The switch group and non-switch group memorized four digits before performing the task and were directed to respond if they saw one of the digits on the screen while performing the task. The switch group was the only group to be presented with the digits twice during the experiment, and both groups were tested on their memory of the digits at the end of the task. Most participants’ performance declined considerably over the course of the 50-minute task. However, the performance of those in the switch group did not decline at all, as the two brief breaks to respond to the digits allowed them to maintain their focus throughout the experiment. The researchers behind the study concluded that the switch group’s performance was steady because the brain is built to detect and respond to change, and its performance will actually suffer if it must maintain prolonged attention on a single task without taking a break. Professionals with a lot on their plates may see their performance improve by taking frequent mental breaks throughout the workday. Page 35

THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB Salary: Of course everyone would love to earn more money when changing jobs, but there is more to changing jobs than just improving your bottom line. As you begin your job search, consider how much you currently earn and if that allows you to live a life you love. If so, don’t overemphasize finding a new job that pays considerably more than your currently earn. On the flip side, young professionals who want to start a family in the years ahead should consider the costs associated with such a decision and how the salaries they earn at their next jobs may affect what they want down the road.

WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A TEAM PLAYER The ability to communicate, interact and work collectively with others is both a professional and personal asset. But in certain ways, the reliance on technology has made working as a team more complicated. People have grown accustomed to spending large quantities of time alone working at computers or on phones and tablets, potentially compromising their ability to work directly with others when the need arises. According to Monster.com, when it comes to choosing a candidate for a new job or promotion, employers consistently say they want a team player. That means it’s advantageous for professionals looking to further their careers to brush up on their team-building and social skills.
NETWORKING STRATEGIES FOR THE DIGITAL AGE Embrace professional social media. Social media may not have been around the last time you looked for a job, but professional social media sites such as LinkedIn are a vital component of networking in the digital age. If you haven’t done so already, establish a LinkedIn profile so you can begin connecting with other professionals in your field.

Change your workout schedule. Regular exercise improves shortand long-term health while also increasing daily energy levels. Professionals who include exercise in their daily routines yet still suffer from a lack of alertness in the afternoon may need to alter their workout schedules. A 2011 study published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine found that participants who were assigned afternoon exercise programs during work hours reported increased productivity versus those who were not assigned afternoon workouts. If working out in the afternoon is not feasible, avoid working out too late at night, as the National Institutes of Health note that exercising within two to three hours of bedtime can disrupt sleep, ultimately having a negative impact on energy levels the following day.

And as anyone who has received an inappropriate gift or something that really wasn’t useful can attest, he or she probably doesn’t want to face a situation in which a gift leads to office gossip. According to a poll conducted by Harris, around half of workers plan to gift at least one business associate around the holidays but are confused about what to give. Too often it’s up to workers to navigate these etiquette minefields on their own, but the following tips can help the process go smoothly. Keep it impersonal. Impersonal doesn’t mean it’s acceptable to grab anything off the shelf. But the gift should not be something that would offend tastes or sentiments. Avoid clothing, perfume, jewelry, or accessories. Lotions and other scented items are also ill-advised. Skip your boss. Etiquette experts say that gifts should flow downward not upward in the realm of employment ranking. That means it’s best to stick with gifting colleagues who are on the same level as you. Buying a gift for the boss may look like you’re simply trying to score brownie points instead of offering a meaningful gift. Give group gifts. Rather than gifting individuals, it can be safer to give a group gift from which many can benefit. This can include coffee and pastries from a nearby bakery, or a bouquet of flowers to brighten up the office environment. Keep prices modest. Office giving is not about illustrating who can afford the most expensive gift. Remember, some people will not be able to reciprocate, and they shouldn’t feel uncomfortable for being on the receiving end of a lavish gift. Follow the rules. Gift exchanges should be cleared with supervisors or human resources professionals. It pays to check if there are rules in place for gifting others. Avoid cash gifts. Giving cash or checks is not a good idea. Money should only come by way of bonuses from higher-ups. If you’re stuck on what to give, a gift card to a store that a coworker visits is acceptable.
