[T]hat old September feeling... of summer passing, vacation nearly done, obligations gathering, books and football in the air.... Another fall, another turned page: there was something of jubilee in that annual autumnal beginning, as if last year’s mistakes and failures had been wiped clean by summer. ~Wallace Stegner

CHOOSING AND APPLYING MULCH Timing: The Morton Arboretum notes that mulch being applied as winter protection should not be applied too early in the fall, as doing so may delay the soil freezing process. Homeowners should wait until after a hard frost in the fall to apply winter mulch. In many places, hard frost will not appear until late fall.
Check for drafts and leaks Fall is an ideal time to check windows and doors for cracks where water, air or insects can enter. Seal up holes and cracks, and ensure there are no drafty areas. Drafts can cause home heating and cooling systems to work harder, expending more energy than necessary.

Benjamin T. Green • 585-519-1264 • Wayland SIMPLE WAYS TO WINTERIZE YOUR HOME Leaky windows and doorways can cost homeowners money year-round, allowing cold air to escape on hot summer afternoons and letting cold air in on brisk winter nights. When such leaks aren’t fixed, homeowners are more liable to turn up their air conditioners or heaters, unnecessarily padding their energy bills along the way. Before winter arrives, check areas around windows and door frames for leaks, as well as any additional openings, such as chimneys, that may allow cold air in. Use caulk or weather strips to plug these leaks, and enjoy your warmer home and lower energy bills as winter weather gets colder and colder.
PROTECT YOUR HOME FROM WINTER’S FREEZE Service HVAC systems It’s important to ensure that heating systems are working properly prior to the cold-weather season. It may only take hours for the interior of a home to reach dangerously low temperatures without adequate heat. Homeowners should schedule annual checkups of furnaces and hot water heaters. Inspect the heat exchanger for cracks, install a clean air filter and make sure all thermostats are working properly.

Calvin S. Caton “Buzz” September 17, 2020
Nelson E. “Nellie” Thorpe September 20, 2020
Dansville: Passed away peacefully on September 17, 2020 at age 95. Calvin was a decorated Naval WWII Veteran who fought many battles as a Fire Controlman in the Pacific Corridor. He is predeceased by his loving wife, Evelyn (his Princess); stepson, Edward J. French; grandson, Edward C. French; sister, JoAnn Gmelin and his good friend, Edie. He leaves his memories to his grandchildren: Starlett (Ron) Smith of Wayland, NY, Lovette French of Holley, NY and Randy French of AZ; many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and dear friends. No prior calling hours of services. There will be a private ceremony with family to celebrate the wonderful life that Calvin lived and the love and tremendous stories he gave to all. www.Miller1889.com UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE When choosing coverage, you will no doubt be asked if you prefer term insurance or permanent insurance. Term insurance is the least expensive life insurance, and such policies only last for a predetermined number of years. Men and women may purchase life insurance policies if they only want life insurance until they retire or until their children reach adulthood. Permanent insurance is more expensive and will last from the moment you purchase the policy until your death. Many people choose permanent life insurance policies so the money their beneficiaries receive upon their death can be used to pay estate taxes. In addition, there is an investment component to permanent insurance policies, as a portion of the premiums on such policies is invested (policies will spell out how the money is invested) and allowed to grow tax-free so long as the policy is open. Term insurance only provides protection with no investments.
Bloomfield - Nelson E. “Nellie” Thorpe, age 80, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, September 20, 2020. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Barbara Thorpe; three children, Melody Thorpe, Melissa Thorpe and Patrick (Stephanie) Thorpe; two grandsons, Jordan and Nicholas; and sister, Donna Leonard. He was predeceased by his brother, William Thorpe and sister, Mary Frew. Nelson was born in Warsaw, NY and was the son of Nelson W. and Mae (Gilbert) Thorpe. He grew up in Honeoye and graduated from Lima High School in 1957. After high school he owned and operated Thorpe’s Service station in Lima for 5 years. He retired from Rochester Carpenters Union in 1997 after 31 years of service. In 1997 he was elected East Bloomfield Highway Superintendent where he served for 8 years. Nelson was a US Army Reservist who spent his entire career with the 98th Division and retired at the rank of Sergeant First Class in 1994. Nelson had 59 years in the fire service, with 51 of those years with the East Bloomfield Fire Department. He was an active member of the Ontario County Fire Police Association and the Lima American Legion Post #282. Nelson was a member of the Antique Automobile Club of America and had a passion for restoring antique cars and fire trucks for which he won over 80 national awards. He was known for his friendly demeanor, his smile, and his kind and compassionate spirit. He was always willing to lend a hand or help someone in need. His memorial service will be held Saturday at 11am at Elton Park, Rtes 5&20, East Bloomfield. A reception will immediately follow the service at the East Bloomfield Fire Department. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the East Bloomfield Fire Department, P.O. Box 246, East Bloomfield, NY 14443 or the East Bloomfield United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 6, East Bloomfield, NY 14443. Arrangements are by Johnson-Kennedy Funeral Home, Inc., Bloomfield. Condolences may be offered at: www.johnsonkennedy.com
General eulogy preparation tips: * Eulogies are for the living, and for everyone at a remembrance service. * Be brief. People listen for three to five minutes. After five minutes, people stop listening. * Do a bit of research. Talk to others. What are some childhood memories? Was there a favorite lesson learned? Was there a favorite quote or an inspiring song? What was the deceased like at work? What were some favorite accomplishments? * Write out the eulogy. Even if you are an experienced speaker, during the emotional time of a rememberance service it is especially easy to wander. * Write and speak from the heart. Be yourself. * Practice the eulogy. Time it. Rehearse in front of an audience (one or two people). Listen to their feedback. Edit. Practice again. * Have a back-up plan. In case you are unable to begin or finish, have someone else prepared to deliver the eulogy for you. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

NOW HERE'S A TIP * If you are looking after baby kittens that are bottle feeding, when you handle the kittens, wear pants and long sleeves. Tiny kitten nails are like razor blades they are so sharp! And of course, they love to climb up on you to get your attention. * “While my family is still participating in virtual learning, it’s important that we recognize some structure. This means preparing -- or at least planning -- lunch meals ahead of time. Our house is small, and one of us is near the kitchen. This saves us two to three periods of someone banging around in the kitchen being disruptive.” -- E. in Florida * “Want to be more organized in your home cleaning? It seems many people want to have a cleaner, more organized home but get overwhelmed when putting it into practice. Start by creating a cleaning schedule that breaks down jobs into a list incorporating tasks to be done daily, weekly and even monthly or quarterly. It takes the ‘if I can’t do everything I’ll just do nothing’ factor out of play.” -- J.M. in Pennsylvania * A bathroom squeegee can help eliminate water spots before they form on your shower doors. Hang one in your shower. * If you haven’t worn an item in six months (of its seasonality), it’s time to let it go. That’s been the Golden Rule for as long as I can remember. I was asked recently, Does it apply this year? I think now, like always, is a good time to look critically at your overall summer wardrobe, but I would add “opportunity” to the caveats. Meaning, if you haven’t worn it because you have not had an opportunity you otherwise would have had, save it. Those work clothes will be important again! -- JoAnn REAL ESTATE

For all the support that resulted in our first Loon Lake Chapel Chicken BBQ on 8-29-20 being sold out! There are so many people who we are grateful for and who are responsible for the success. We would like to acknowledge Alex and his son for the wonderful job of cooking & ticket sales. Many people donated time, energy and products including Cory (the potatoes), Chuck (the cookies), Rachelin (the rolls), and the Perkinsville Fire Dept. for getting everything spic and span. We are Blessed to have the support of volunteers and the community. It’s a wonderful reminder that the Chapel “Bells” and God still matter!

UR STRONG I want to give a huge shout out to the many nurses I met during my stay this past month. Each and every one of you in your own way made my stay a little more bearable. From the handmade chocolate milkshake to just chatting with me, from laughing at my bad jokes to drawing funny pictures on the white board. But most of all, thanks for the care and attention given to me. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart! CAR ACCIDENT ANGEL I was in a bad car accident on Route 247 in Canandaigua on Friday, August 28th, and right after my car was hit I was
so scared and upset, but a very kind woman came to me and held me as I cried. She stayed right by side until the ambulance came. She was my angel, and I am forever grateful and blessed for her act of kindness. I did not get her name, but God bless you, and thank you so very much for being by my side. There are still kind people in this world, and she is definitely one of them! ABOVE AND BEYOND I want to recognize Alden Smith who owns Smith Solutions, our garbage service in Dansville. He is hands down the hardest working, most honest and respectful young man I know. He
goes above and beyond to serve his customers. Thank you for being outstanding in what I can imagine is a thankless job.
OUT OF SEASON
RESPONSE TO “RABBLE ROUSERS” I am so sorry if you are having difficulty opening a small business in whatever township you live in. I know that where I live, we had a beautiful hardware store set up business. It was so wonderful to have a place so close to home. They once told us what a difficult time Town Hall gave them when they wanted to open. Yet, we can have a place that brings down the neighborhood. That is fine with Town Hall, which I find odd. The hardware store unfortunately had to close its doors. How sad! I wish you well with your endeavors, but it does seem to be an upward climb for some.
someone who respects the town ordinance. Do you even know what kind of music that neighbor was playing? Do you just assume it is the kind of music you like? Such ignorance to assume all music has the same effect on everyone! If your music is loud enough to rock your neighbor’s house, you are intruding! Period. If I want free concerts, I would live next to a stadium. You were completely irresponsible to “suggest” that the original complainer move their residence in order to get some peace in their life. I suggest that you people find out who you all are, move into the same neighborhood, and play your personal outdoor concerts against each other.
My brother has 30 acres of land and has been watching a large turkey family in the fields eating grasshoppers. Something spooked them and they all flew across the road onto a certain property. This guy grabs his gun and starts shooting! My brother flipped out as he watched this. This person said he wanted a turkey for dinner after he lied about it saying the turkeys scared his horses, claiming he shot over the horses at the turkeys. My brother does not know for sure if he hit one, but if he got the hen, those babies surely won’t make it. I think these people are shooting deer, as well as rabbits and anything they can eat. What makes them special that they can shoot everything that BE GONE! is out of season? If I catch them To the people who attacked the doing this, I will turn them in. person who complained about their neighbor’s loud music, shame on you for ganging up on GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

A LOCAL TREASURE We arranged for a private tour of historic Valentown in Victor with a group of friends and wish to thank our tour guide, Kathryn White, and the other volunteers who made it possible. Valentown has a fascinating history and is a living legacy of the late Sheldon Fischer. It relies upon donations and volunteers to keep it operating. If you have not visited, I encourage you to check it out!
DON’T BE SURPRISED! I had to respond to the recent “support” of loud music from neighbors being okay. Obviously, it was written by neighbors that

THANK YOU! Just want to express my appreciation to the two Ontario County Sheriff’s Deputies who rescued me when I carelessly locked my keys and phone in my truck when I stopped at a veggie stand on 5 and 20 on Sept. 9th. Also, my gratitude to Laura Jo at the stand, who called for help. Thank you all! THANK YOU! I would like to thank the gentleman in the black truck who was in front of me at the McDonald’s drive-thru in Lakeville on Friday, Sept. 11th around 2:30pm for paying for my order. It brightened my day and was greatly appreciated!
have no sense of common courtesy. I bet if I cranked music all day next to their house, they would be the first to complain! You do not get to decide what others have to listen to. Want to take a nap? Nope! Music! Want to keep the baby asleep? Nope! Music! Want to enjoy a movie? Nope! Music! You now get to have an extra soundtrack added to your show. There are laws on noise for a reason people like you! The beauty of this infraction: I get to call the cops, and you would not even hear them coming! The evidence would be deafening!

Mask Makers: COVID’s Everyday Heroes: Part II BY AMANDA DUDEK
T
o wear masks or not to wear masks has become the question lately. No matter where you stand, there is no denying the care and selflessness shown by those at home who gave, and continue to give, their time, resources and talents to make masks for those in need. Five of these unsung heroes in Livingston and Ontario Counties open up about their mask-making journeys. Rachel Halbert – Caledonia Caledonia’s Rachel Halbert, a homeschooling mom of four, was inspired to make her first masks for her sister, an essential worker at Strong Hospital. It wasn’t long, however, before people began asking for Rachel’s masks. “I started receiving more and more requests, and I realized, wow, more people need these than I thought,” she shared. “I couldn’t make masks fast enough!”
Showing off Rachel Halbert’s masks!
Rachel started filling a tote with masks of all sizes for men, women, and children, made from the material she had on hand. Some of her friends helped, as well. Rachel offered them at no charge to anyone in need. “The community response has been overwhelming,” she said. “I put a donation jar out front with tote of masks, and I received a huge outpouring of financial support. Material of all kinds was donated along with plants, gift cards, even pizza and food so I wouldn’t have to worry about dinner.” Recently, Rachel began using a new design and has been focusing on children’s masks for the 2020 school year, estimating she has made well over 500 Rachel Halbert’s masks are a great fit! masks total at this point. “It has been so rewarding to hear how my masks blessed others and to see people in my community wearing them,” Rachel confided. “I am thankful I was able to help keep them a little safer.” Elizabeth Hendy – Canandaigua Heading north of Naples, Elizabeth Hendy of Canandaigua also found a way for masks to serve a dual purpose. “I started making masks because we needed a way to start raising money for the Finger Lakes Thoroughbred Adoption Program,” Elizabeth explained. “This agency does a lot of good work

making sure horses find good homes at the end of their racing careers.” Elizabeth knew that those working at Finger Lakes Gaming & Racetrack, as well as others, would be in need of masks to comply with very strict regulations. So, she decided to make her masks with horse-themed patterns. “It makes it a little nicer to wear a Elizabeth Hendy displays her masks mask,” she said. “They are with the help of a five-month-old thoroughbred unofficially known as washable and very Captain, a future race horse! affordable. I provide masks for those who need them, and the money they bring in makes certain these horses are still being fed and taken care of.”
Elizabeth Hendy makes horse-themed masks to support the Finger Lakes Thoroughbred Adoption Program!
Although she has faced difficulties such as a lack of supplies and her sewing machine breaking down, Elizabeth continues to sew masks. “It doesn’t help to make masks which are pretty but not comfortable,” she said. She has made over 200 more comfortable masks so far. To order Elizabeth’s masks, visit the Finger Lakes Thoroughbred Adoption Program Facebook page.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Badly Behaved Dogs Need Basic Commands DEAR PAW’S CORNER:
Every time I read an article about a badly behaved dog, the trainer says that the dog needs to relearn basic commands like sit, stay and lie down. Why would unrelated commands solve a behavior problem? -- Edward in Albany, New York DEAR EDWARD: Every dog should be trained to respond to five basic commands: come, heel, sit, stay and lie down. Dogs need to obey their owner the first time and every time a command is issued. That may sound a little harsh, but a dog that can’t be controlled is a dog in danger. Owners need to be able to recall a dog that has slipped its leash before it runs into traffic. They need to make sure their dog will walk beside them and will sit calmly on command, especially when another dog approaches. Their dog needs to stay in position when told to do so -- whether sitting or lying down. Dogs aren’t robots, though. Like us, their discipline and training will slip if not regularly reinforced. Think about how often you and I give in to temptation and take that second cookie (or third or fourth or fifth). Just as we humans sometimes need reinforcement of good habits, our dogs need regular reinforcement of basic commands. When owners spend more time working one-on-one with their dogs, they frequently report that undesirable behaviors happen less often. The time and attention that owners give can quickly blunt attention-seeking behaviors. The AKC has a good breakdown of the basic dog commands here: www.akc. org/ expert-advice/training/ and search for “5 basic commands.” Energetic young dogs can be a handful sometimes. If you are having trouble getting your dog to respond to basic commands, enlist the help of a professional trainer.

Volunteers… We Need Your Help! Featured Nonprofit:
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
The Spicebox Gift Shop
Cologuard Test Worth Risk of False Positive --DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 77-year-old man in good health. At my recent annual physical exam, my physician ordered a Cologuard kit to be sent to me to screen for colorectal disease. I have never had symptoms of disease or problems with any part of my gastrointestinal tract. I had two colonoscopies at different times several years ago, the results of which were negative. When I got the kit, I read the patient guidelines and learned that the Cologuard test could result in false positives and that there is an unspecified increase in the risk of false positives for persons over the age of 75. A positive result from the test requires a follow-up colonoscopy, which is also riskier for elderly patients. Since I am in good health with no symptoms of any disease, I decided I did not want to risk a false positive result from the test, which would require a follow-up colonoscopy. Did I make the right decision? -- E.G. ANSWER: Cologuard is a brand of test that looks at DNA in stool for evidence of cancer. Certain DNA mutations are highly suggestive of cancer. In addition, Cologuard does an immunochemical test looking for blood. Because it combines these two techniques, Cologuard is more sensitive than only a test looking for blood. Compared with colonoscopy, Cologuard is about 92% sensitive in finding cancers, meaning it will miss about 8%. With improved sensitivity comes a lack of specificity, which means you could have a false positive result. The Cologuard can say that you have an abnormality when a colonoscopy would indicate normal. For 45% of people with a positive Cologuard test, no abnormalities will be found upon colonoscopy. You are right that false positives are more prevalent in older individuals. There are two reasons that I think the Cologuard is still a reasonable choice, despite the fact that it isn’t as good as colonoscopy. The first is that I continue to recommend a screening test for healthy 77-year-old men, and although colonoscopy is my first choice, a normal Cologuard test prevents a need for colonoscopy, and a false positive would lead to the same colonoscopy you would have gotten anyway (although there probably is more anxiety after a false positive test). The second is that a person with an abnormal Cologuard and a normal colonoscopy may be at risk for an abnormality that wasn’t found on colonoscopy. A study looking at people in this category found a 25% risk of abnormality on follow-up colonoscopy, if the Cologuard was abnormal again one to two years later. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I had lung surgery in 2014. The scar is still red and sore. I got no instructions on how to deal with it. Do you have any suggestions? -- J.S.B. ANSWER: That’s a very long time for the scar to still be red and sore, and I would encourage you to have the surgeon or your regular doctor take a look. For people with redness and soreness in a scar shortly after surgery, I recommend silicone gel (there are many available), as it has been shown to be effective. Many people recommend vitamin E oil, but well-done studies have shown this does not help and may harm the cosmetic appearance. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Quality Sleep To help you feel your best and sleep more soundly, try the following tips: Take a shower – About 90 minutes before bedtime, take a hot bath or shower. This will help to reduce muscle tension & accelerate sleep onset. Create an electronics curfew – The blue light from your favorite electronic devices interrupts your ability to relax and fall asleep. Don’t use your smartphone, tablet and other digital devices for one hour before bed. Stretch to relax – Stretching for 10-15 minutes before bed will help reduce muscle tension. Turn down noises and do some gentle stretches to relax the muscles and mind. Set a wake-up schedule – Try to wake up at the same time each morning, even on the weekends. This will help keep your internal clock ticking correctly so you can fall asleep more quickly and sleep deeply. Embrace natural light – About 15 minutes of sunlight each morning will help reset your circadian rhythm so you can rise more naturally and then sleep better in the evenings.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT FALL Squirrels have a (sophisticated) plan out there. Squirrels hiding food in autumn for the upcoming winter is a familiar sight. And squirrels are more organized than many people may know. Groundbreaking research released in 1991 found that, even when squirrels bury that stash of nuts closely to one another, they will each return to the precise location of their personal cache. Recent research also has shown that squirrels bury their stash based on certain traits, such as the type of nut being buried.

ADVICE FOR A SUCCESSFUL CAREER CHANGE Use your network. The notion that “it’s not what you know, but who you know” has some truth to it. Successful jobseekers continually expand their professional contacts. This is achieved by going to informational interviews, attending trade association meetings and reviewing trade publications. Target people who work at the companies where you see yourself, so you can get the inside track about job openings.

Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts from Money, CNN and The Motley Fool advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.
