MEMORIAL GIFTS HONOR LOVED ONES
UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE When choosing coverage, you will no doubt be asked if you prefer term insurance or permanent insurance. Term insurance is the least expensive life insurance, and such policies only last for a predetermined number of years. Men and women may purchase life insurance policies if they only want life insurance until they retire or until their children reach adulthood. Permanent insurance is more expensive and will last from the moment you purchase the policy until your death. Many people choose permanent life insurance policies so the money their beneficiaries receive upon their death can be used to pay estate taxes. In addition, there is an investment component to permanent insurance policies, as a portion of the premiums on such policies is invested (policies will spell out how the money is invested) and allowed to grow tax-free so long as the policy is open. Term insurance only provides protection with no investments.
he loss of a friend or loved one is seldom easy, particularly if a person had been suffering from an illness. Close friends and family honor the memories of their deceased loved ones in different ways. Charitable giving can be a great way to honor a loved one’s memory while helping others. Survivors often find comfort in the knowledge that they can do good in the name of a loved one. Tributes or memorial gifts can be approached in different ways and serve as an ongoing reminder of a deceased loved one. Create a charitable foundation: Those who have the time and resources can establish their own charitable groups in the decedent’s name. This method of charity requires the most time and effort, but can prove to be quite an impactful memorial. Individuals who would like to go this route can consult with financial and tax professionals about the best way to establish a charitable group. Community foundation: Families can focus on something their loved one cared deeply about, such as animal rescue, children, the arts, or even particular places in a community - such as a local park. According to CarePages, a company that produces free patient websites and offers community support for those coping with illness, families can choose to have their donations funneled to specific charities or nonprofit groups. Otherwise, funds can be allocated to a third party community fund that will distribute money to various organizations no matter where they are located. Medical tribute: Memorial gifts that assist medical associations or groups working to find cures or offer treatments for diseases are quite popular. If a loved one passed away due to a specific illness, it is common to ask for donations to a specific organization that specializes in information and services pertaining to that illness. Many such groups have a “donate in memory” option on their websites. Oftentimes families are notified regarding who made memorial donations in their loved ones’ names, but the amount of the donation need not be revealed. Personal intentions: Those who would like to make a donation but cannot think of a charity to associate with their deceased loved one have a host of options at their disposal. Consider donating to a school or library, requesting materials be purchased in the decedent’s name. Otherwise, donate to a general scholarship fund, possibly at the decedent’s alma mater. Finish their work: If the decedent was engaged in a charitable project prior to their death, volunteer to help complete that project. Giving back after the death of a loved one is a great way to keep the memory of that person alive.

Jennifer Howe & Cancer Comfort Bag Project Inc.: Compassion in the Face of Cancer BY AMANDA DUDEK
J
ennifer Howe was born and raised in Dansville; her roots run deep in this compassionate, close-knit community. Howe has worked for the Genesee Valley Penny Saver for nearly 20 “amazing” years. She is the proud parent of her two fur baby cats, Olyver and Willow. Little did she know almost five years ago that her life was about to turn upside down. Howe lives in Dansville, as do her parents. She is a proud member of the local Rotary Club and enjoys several nieces, nephews, and godchildren. Unexpectedly, in October 2015, Howe was diagnosed with cancer. Howe recalls, “Finally, I went to my doctor with extreme stomach pain. I had ovarian cancer which was a five-pound mass as large as a football.” Howe’s diagnosis required immediate action, and she had surgery one week later. Howe explained, “I was in the hospital for 11 days. I also had to do 6 months of chemo, which is not fun.” It was during this time that Howe first became aware of comfort bags. “A cousin in Georgia sent me a comfort bag from The Lydia Project,” she said. “The bag was beautiful and handmade.” The comfort bag, which included a notepad, journal, pen, a couple of tea tree gum samples, hand sanitizer and lotion, was a complete surprise to Howe. “To get that in the mail just brightened my day!” she said. Howe’s surgery and treatment went well, and she found herself determined to give back. “I felt extremely lucky,” confided Howe. “I had a great support group, wonderful family and friends and work was absolutely amazing.” She decided to create comfort bags herself, which she calls Cancer Comfort Bags. “It had been like a little hug to me,” Howe reflected. “My mom began making bags for me. News spread by word of mouth.” In March 2016, she sent her first bag out on her final day of treatment. “I include all the kinds of items that I had found useful during my cancer journey, such as a blanket, Karma Water, hand sanitizer, antibacterial wipes, lotion, thank you cards, fuzzy socks for both men and women, adult coloring books and puzzle books which help pass the time during chemo treatments, and much more!” The Cancer Comfort Bags caught on quickly. “Almost right after I started, I began receiving donations from people, businesses and non-profit service organizations in the community and beyond,” said Howe. “People have donated items and funds, which really helps with costs.” Howe, who has shipped these bags all over the continental U.S, was interviewed by WHAM 13 News on December 31, 2016 and said “That is when we exploded!” In 2017, Cancer Comfort Bag Project, Inc. officially became a 501c3 nonprofit. “We have a board of directors, treasurer and secretary, who are all good friends and know and support the goals I want to meet,” explained Howe. “We supply Noyes Cancer Center with bags, but due to COVID, that was put on hold, and we are waiting to start up again.” Meanwhile, she provides forms for the patients so they can request a bag at their home if they would like. Cancer Comfort Bag Project Inc. also has a website where people can request a bag for themselves or a loved one at www. cancercomfortbagproject.com or via email at cancercomfortbags@gmail. com. Today, Howe estimates she has sent out 2,000-3,000 bags. Although the bags remain free of charge, she does now ask for help with shipping when shipping out of state but this is not required. “At one point, I was getting up to 50 requests a day!” she explained. “It depleted my stock and accounts, and I would have had to close my doors, so to speak, if the community hadn’t gotten word and rallied around us with supplies and donations. People are pretty amazing!” Howe has also done fundraisers, appears at events like bike runs and speaks at civic groups. Nevertheless, she recruits a group she calls her “Crewsaders” to deliver the comfort bags. “This is very near and dear to my heart,” she said, adding, “a hand-delivered bag is more personal and the stories they bring back...” she paused with emotion. “People are in tears, giving hugs, sharing their stories. They just love it.”
Jennifer Howe taking packages of comfort bags to the post office!
the late Edgar Schmidt of the Star Theatre, a very dear friend. “Edgar did a lot to support Cancer Comfort Bags,” she said. “I miss him every day.” She also noted how he supported her in her battles against cancer, mentioning she had a recurrence of ovarian cancer in 2017. Howe continues her fight to be healthy. Moving into the fall and winter seasons, Howe receives hats, scarves, and other cold weather items for her bags. “You lose a lot of heat through your head when you lose your hair while going through treatment,” she said, noting those who have donated beautiful hats in the past. In the future, Howe hopes to extend her nonprofit to other cancer centers, as well. Those with loved ones fighting cancer are welcome to request a comfort care bag. Howe suggests being mindful of timing. “I encourage people to wait until their loved one starts chemo rather then immediately after the diagnosis,” she said. “Give them a chance to wrap their head around being newly diagnosed. Their world is in a tailspin, and it can be very overwhelming. Given at the right time, the Cancer Comfort Bag is a happy thing to receive while going through something which can be absolutely terrifying.” Enjoy this article? A hidden fire burns perpetually upon the hearth of the world.... In autumn this great conflagration becomes especially manifest. Then the flame that is slowly and mysteriously consuming every green thing bursts into vivid radiance. Every blade of grass and every leaf in the woodlands is cast into the great oven of Nature; and the bright colours of their fading are literally the flames of their consuming. The golden harvest-fields are glowing in the heart of the furnace.... By this autumn fire God every year purges the floor of nature. All effete substances that have served their purpose in the old form are burnt up. Everywhere God makes sweet and clean the earth with fire. ~Hugh Macmillan
Drive slowly in school zones and bus stops. Be alert! Look for children running to the bus stop, especially without a sidewalk. Double check for children when backing out of your driveway or garage.
PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta Is a Cat Enclosure Inhumane? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My neighbor, when she’s doing yardwork, routinely puts her cat into something that looks like a chicken coop. It has a screen enclosure and a little wooden house. I’m very worried that the cat is too hot sitting in the enclosure and will get injured. Should I tell her to keep her cat inside? -- Worried Neighbor in Wichita DEAR WORRIED: Your neighbor is probably putting the cat inside a cat enclosure -- or maybe a repurposed chicken coop. Cat enclosures are getting very popular, especially in the cities and suburbs. These are a good way for an indoor cat to spend some time outdoors without the risk of running away, getting lost or being attacked by another animal. It can reduce exposure to fleas and ticks, too. If the cat has a shady place to hide from the sun while inside the shelter, and a bowl of fresh water, it is just fine to be in there for short periods (an hour or two). Since your neighbor is outside and within sight of the cat, it’s clear that she is keeping an eye on it. If you want to have a conversation about it, be polite. “That’s a neat enclosure; what a great way for your cat to get outside for a while!” is perhaps the best icebreaker in this case. Otherwise, if the cat does not appear distressed and is sitting or lying calm and alert, then there’s nothing to worry about, especially if your neighbor brings the cat inside after finishing the yardwork. If you have serious concerns (the cat is in the enclosure 24/7, looks very distressed or unhealthy), consider striking up a conversation or, if you’re uncomfortable doing that, contacting animal control. Send your tips, comments andquestions to ask@pawscorner. com.

BENEFITS OF HIRING PROFESSIONAL CONTRACTORS Inspiration: One oft-overlooked benefit of working with professional contractors is the likelihood that they can draw up ideas for projects that homeowners might otherwise never have thought up on their own. Homeowners without specific ideas in mind can ask contractors to come up with various scenarios before committing to a particular one. Veteran contractors can draw on years of experience to create designs that DIYers might be incapable of coming up with and/or incapable of seeing through to completion.

Foods at farmers’ markets tend to be limited to in-season offerings. Some nutritionists suggest eating seasonally available foods is better for your body, because humans ate seasonal produce for thousands of years before shipping and refrigeration changed how people received the majority of their foods. In addition, many people feel that fresh, seasonal foods taste better than the alternatives.

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * “Whenever a stew or soup recipe calls for whole herbs to be used and then taken out later, I put them in a tea infuser. I could never seem to get them all before, and inevitably someone would be served a whole bay leaf or such. This makes it foolproof.” -- J.R. in Georgia * You can use an old toothbrush or nail brush to get grime out of the hinge area of the toilet seat. * If you have a plant cutting you are trying to root in water, here’s a tip to keep the end from resting on the bottom of your container: Use a twist tie wrapped around the stem on one side and hooked over the edge of the container on the other. * “Whenever I get new e-mail addresses, I always add them to my online address book. I also write them in my old-fashioned paper address book. Sounds like a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised by how many people rely on their e-mail address book to remember all those addresses. It just takes one time for a computer virus to erase everything -- not to mention if something happens to your hard drive. Just a reminder!” -- B.R. in Pennsylvania * Using ice-cold sour cream instead of ice-cold water in your pie crust recipe will give you a flakier crust. * Here’s a tip to gauge your exercise level: If you can’t get out a sentence, then you are in a high intensity phase. If you can’t talk at all during your entire workout, you are going too hard. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

HOW TO KEEP GRILLED FOODS WARM
Puzzle Answers This Week
Place foods in the slow cooker. If the stove is not an option because other components of the meal are being baked or broiled, grilled foods can be placed in ceramic slow cookers with lids. This can potentially keep foods warm for longer periods of time than aluminum foil tents without sacrificing flavor.

SEPTEMBER 2020 Pandemic Status - Library Open Dansville Public Library is open for business! Come browse the shelves, select books for the grandkids, use WiFi or a library computer! We recommend calling ahead to schedule a computer as, due to distancing, only 2 desktops are available. There are a few rules, though. Please sanitize your hands as you enter. Wear your mask covering nose & mouth. Please distance from others. After reading magazines or newspapers, simply leave them on the table top. Visits are limited to one hour so regular sanitizing duties are easier to complete. Continue to put returns in the Book Drop. And at present, restrooms are not available until the Library returns to regular hours of service. If you have any questions, please call us at 585-335-6720.
Check Outs & Returns & Due Dates At present, no overdue fines are charged, but that will soon change when your automatic renewals are all used. Do you still have March COVID-time checkouts? Please return them NOW, thank you. For new checkouts, due dates are modified (7-day extension) in order to account for time items spend in quarantine. “Holds” service on another library’s materials remains OFF. However, trial interlibrary deliveries are underway. This allows items borrowed previrus to make their way back to home libraries. Don’t forget downloadable books! They are available at OWWL2Go, 24/7. Our hours of operation are reduced: we are currently Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.! Side Note: the Library will be CLOSED Labor Day September 7.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles
Future Generations Are Counting on You The designation "senior" covers a long stretch of ages, some of us much older or younger than others. It's the older ones who perhaps have the biggest lesson to learn ... that time does not stretch forward indefinitely. I learned that lesson today when I received word that one of my oldest relatives had passed away. His name was Henry, and I never met him. I hooked up with him and his lovely wife many years ago when I started my genealogy hunt. We came together like family, which we were. Christmas cards, newsy letters, new genealogy tidbits, just as though we'd always known each other. I would visit someday, I always told myself, not only Henry and his wife, but all my other newly found relatives in their area. Time and physical distance can't change DNA, and I suspect that should I walk through their small town, I would be easily identified as one of them. All the questions I had, I told myself, could wait until I visited. I waited too long. We owe it to the family generations that come after us to leave them as much information as possible. But where do we start? We start with the family members that are ahead of us in age. We ask questions, we take notes, we write things down. Depending how "senior" we are, we might have parents still living, or if we're younger and have lucky DNA, we might even have a grandparent or two. Type up your information, save the file and print it out. Make copies and hand them out to as many of your relatives as you can. You might look at the generations after you and think they won't be interested in their ancestry. You'll probably be wrong. One of them, maybe years from now, will start to wonder ... and your information will be there. Don't wait. (c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 2020
This letter is in response to the Village of Dansville’s Deputy Mayor Dan Rittenhouse’s Facebook post on August 3rd regarding our sidewalk issue. We have lived at 23 Morey Avenue for 38 years, pay our taxes, maintain our property and are active in the community. There are always two sides to every story. Over two years ago, we observed village workers starting a new project in Babcock Park which is adjacent to our home. Since they were so close to our property, we inquired and were told they were going to be putting a sidewalk through our front yard. We went to the Village Board meeting that night and were told that the project had been in the works for a year and they had neglected to notify us. We were also told that we would have to maintain the sidewalk which includes snow removal. The Rotary Field/Babcock Park has been in existence since 1925 and historically has been much busier than it is now. Pedestrian traffic in and out of the park has never been an issue until some 95 years later when the Village Board decided we must have a sidewalk through our front lawn. As long as we have lived in the house there have been no accidents either pedestrian or vehicular that we know about. How about sidewalks at all of the other park exits? This same exit next to our house going south and east (Morey and Clay) has no sidewalks. The north exit from the park (Weidman Lane) has no sidewalks down the entire street connecting to the schools. Our frustration with this matter made us put signs in our front yard which resulted in Mr. Rittenhouse taking to social media to conduct village business and wrongly portrayed us as caring more about no sidewalks through our lawn than children’s safety. Publishing false, inflammatory statements that damage our reputations should not be made by elected village officials. This matter has always been about the lack of communication and the overall disrespect the Village Board has shown to us as village residents and taxpayers. We are also troubled by Mr. Rittenhouse’s parting shot about us on his Facebook post that “maybe we (the Village Board) should take a look at the fence that they put up on Village property to keep people out of other village property.” We think the property he is talking about at the time was a field owned by Kelly Brothers. In 1992 we replaced an existing hedge with a vinyl fence. We applied for and received a zoning permit for the fence. Any other property that is next to the creek was already being maintained when we bought the house and we continue to do so. The Village Board might better serve the community and the safety of its residents by installing a 4-way stop with crosswalks at the Morey Avenue and Clay Street intersection so all pedestrians can safely enter and exit Babcock Park.

THANK YOU, DOUG! While driving down Latta Road, in Greece, last Wednesday afternoon, I drove over a muffler in the roadway. It was wedged under my car. I immediately pulled over in the median. Very soon after, a loader type vehicle was coming along. I gestured to the driver, Doug, a Town of Greece employee. He stopped to help. After jacking the car up slightly, he was able to pull the muffler out. Thank you so much ONE LAST CHANCE The July 20/27th (double issue) of Time Magazine had numerous features on just how dire our planet’s environment is, at this point in its life. The writing was exceptional as many topics were covered. Certainly, the COVID 19 is at the top of our list in terms of catastrophes, but the heartbeat of our earth is racing toward life support and is a dangerously close second to the COVID. Do yourself a favor and find this important issue and take the time to come up to speed on what we need to do to save our planet! One redeeming aspect of this terrible pandemic is that it has made us stop (pause), access and alter our lifestyles for the greater good. We so desperately need to do the same for Mother Earth! LOAD-BEARING WORDS
Serves 6 to 8 2 to 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 pounds apples, peeled, cored and cut into thick slices 1/2 cup honey, preferably sage honey 1/2 cup white wine Zest of 1 lemon Juice of 1 lemon Fresh sage sprigs for garnish 1. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the apples, turn the heat to high and sauté until they begin to brown on the edges, about 5 minutes. If some are getting too well done, remove them and place on a plate while the rest continue to cook, then return them to the skillet when all are done. 2. Reduce the heat to low and add the honey, wine, lemon zest, lemon juice, and 1/2 cup water. Cover and allow to cook until the apples are tender but still firm; you don’t want them to turn into applesauce. 3. Serve this in a bowl, tuck in a couple sprigs of fresh sage from your garden, and tell your guests all about sage honey.

GO GREEN WHEN SPENDING TIME OUTDOORS THIS SUMMER Vacation locally. Another way to help the planet when spending time outdoors this summer is to vacation locally. People who vacation close to home typically do not fly, and that’s a significant benefit to the planet. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change notes that aviation emissions release black carbon, nitrous oxide and sulphur oxide, which contribute to the greenhouse gas effect. And while the EIA notes that automobiles and airplanes produce relatively similar amounts of carbon dioxide per gallon, airplanes burn considerably more fuel than cars, thanks in large part to the considerable amount of fuel planes burn on the runway. By vacationing locally, outdoor enthusiasts can reduce their reliance on airplanes, thereby reducing the effects those airplanes have on the environment.

RECOGNIZE AND AVOID YOUTH SPORTS INJURIES Periostitis: Periostitis is commonly known as “shin splints.” This is an overuse injury that occurs in athletes who are engaged in activities that involve rapid deceleration. Periostitis causes inflammation of the band of tissue that surrounds bones known as the periosteum, and typically affects people who repetitively jump, run or lift heavy weights. To head off potential pain in the shins, young athletes can gradually build up their tolerance for physical activity. Supportive shoes or orthotic inserts may also help. Incorporating cross-training into a regimen also can work.

Do Homework First on Clinical Trials --DEAR DR. ROACH: My wife has had dementia for over two years. There is an ad in our local paper for an Alzheimer’s disease study. It says, “This study will assess how safe and effective an investigational drug is at slowing the progression of early (prodromal) or mild Alzheimer’s disease.” Is this protocol legit? I don’t trust this type of ad not coming from a hospital. I couldn’t find any information about the sponsors of the research. -- J.N. ANSWER: I was able to find the trial, called the Graduate II trial, which is sponsored by the manufacturer of the drug being tested, called gantenerumab. This drug is designed to reduce the size of the amyloid protein plaques in the brain, which are suspected of being the underlying cause of Alzheimer’s disease, and to prevent new ones from forming. It is indeed a legitimate trial. The best place to find out about these is on the clinicaltrials.gov website. The trial is in phase III. The drug has passed both phase I trials, which are designed to look at safety, and phase II, which look at both safety and effectiveness. Now the investigators are studying the effectiveness of the drug in a larger population, usually for a longer period of time. Drugs that do well in phase III clinical trials may be approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Alzheimer’s drug trials are difficult, because the disease often progresses slowly, and large, time-consuming trials are necessary. In general, I encourage people to consider participating in clinical trials, as they are essential for clinical advances. For gantenerumab in particular, phase I and II trials did show that the drug is effective at reducing the amount of amyloid plaque in the brain; however, clinical trials did not show improvement in memory and brain function. The new trial is using a higher dose and recruiting patients with earlier stage illness. I don’t have enough information to answer whether your wife, having had symptoms for two years, might be eligible for this trial, but I would certainly encourage you to find out more about it. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have recently started transitioning to a plant-based diet for preventative health reasons. While discussing the benefits of nuts and seeds with a dietitian, they had a disclaimer that flax seed can interfere with medications and to eat them two hours before or one hour after taking medications. I would not sit down and eat a handful of flax seeds, but now I am afraid to use them in the meals I prepare at all. Can you help me make a good decision? -- J.E. ANSWER: For people eating reasonable amounts (like a handful or two) of flax seeds as part of a meal, it is unlikely that they would interfere with medications enough to cause any significant problem, for most medications. There are two situations that might merit concern: In powerful anti-clotting agents, such as clopidogrel, flax seeds might prompt increased activity. Secondly, flax seeds may lower blood sugar a small amount. In combination with insulin or oral diabetes drugs, the blood sugar could possibly dip lower than expected. I doubt either of these interactions is likely to cause harm, but it is reasonable to discuss with your doctor if you are on one of the classes of medications mentioned. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. I seem to have a knack for growing plants where they don’t belong. I am trying to grow date palms in containers and have three date palms ranging from 3” to 6” tall. With winter fast approaching, how should I keep them warm enough to survive and thrive? - Josiah C. Date Palms originate from North Africa and Asia and can tolerate some cooler temperatures. In our
climate in winter, however, they will need protection from a hard freeze which could kill them. Bring them in when temperatures fall into the 40’s at night, and find a bright, sunny window inside with room temperatures of 65-75 degrees. Water them sparingly in winter, letting the soil dry out between waterings. Make sure to provide good drainage. If they stand in water for long periods (a day or more), the roots can be damaged, and the tree could die.
While you should fertilize the trees about once per month in spring through fall, do not fertilize at all in winter. Avoid cold drafts near your young palm trees, and they should winter well and be ready to set out next spring and continue to grow and thrive.

STUDY WHAT YOU LOVE—ENTREPRENEURSHIP AS THE PATH TO SUCCESS AND FULFILLMENT (NAPSI)—The United States has long been considered a leader in entrepreneurial pursuits, with everyone from ambitious self-starters to certified moguls making their way here from around the globe to transform dreams into realities. According to the Global Entrepreneurship Development Institute, the United States provides the best environment for cultivating entrepreneurship, ranking first out of 138 countries. On the flip side, however, first-time business owners have only an 18 percent chance of succeeding. So how to bridge the gap between the dreamers and the triumphant? If you’re a student looking for a way to make your passion into your career, you may be glad to learn there’s a college program that can put you on the right path, while also providing you with a classic liberal arts education. The new Entrepreneurship minor course of study at Pennsylvania’s Lycoming College provides a modern approach to a liberal arts education, while preparing students to start a company of their own, to work for another entrepreneurial company or to be more entrepreneurial within a larger company. The program is headed by Marshall D. Welch III, the Sloter Endowed Chair in Entrepreneurship at Lycoming College, who is an accomplished entrepreneur with extensive experience advising and managing organizations, merger integration and emerging growth companies. He also approaches entrepreneurship differently from others. Welch believes that entrepreneurship, at its core, is finding and creating value, and that studying entrepreneurship as an academic discipline helps students learn to be innovative in whatever field they ultimately pursue. In less than one year, Lycoming College’s entrepreneurship classes have become a sought-after, valued addition to many students’ class schedules. The program is built on the notion that any student’s core education, regardless of academic major, can be augmented with the practical knowledge and skills necessary to take a business idea to fruition, such as innovation, digital marketing, intellectual property and financial skills. “My No. 1 objective is to create a world-class experience for students by joining the liberal arts with entrepreneurship,” said Welch. “I believe that the core knowledge of any entrepreneur is first his or her primary field of study, whether that is biology, archaeology, music or any of the other majors at Lycoming. Then add the practical knowledge and skills necessary to help our students become successful entrepreneurs or even work for entrepreneurial companies.” Firmly grounded in the liberal arts, the College has modernized its approach to higher education by offering courses that better prepare students for the 21st century. Still in its infancy, the program is already attracting well-known speakers to campus. Jay Ducote, celebrity chef and restaurateur, who has appeared on Food Network and Travel Channel, recently lectured to the College community on how he followed his passion and took risks on his road to success. “Lycoming is resolute in its mission to offer students a 21st-century education, and I believe our entrepreneurship offerings are an important part of that charge. Thinking deeply and making bold decisions to do something the world has never seen, while also staying true to your passions, accurately describes the students at this institution—a truth that also closely aligns with the principles of entrepreneurship,” said Welch. VOCATIONAL SCHOOLING CAN PAVE THE WAY TO HIGH-PAYING JOBS Many students believe that the next natural step after graduating from high school is to go off to college. Secondary education has become such a common transition that many parents begin saving for college tuition as soon as their children are born. Although college can be the next chapter in a student’s education, many teenagers still choose to attend trade school. Television personality Mike Rowe says the country is in the midst of a skilled labor shortage because workers lack the necessary training to fill the hundreds of thousands of available jobs. Lack of information may drive the notion that trade jobs are nothing more than a backup plan if college doesn’t pan out.
