Before trimming the gift wrap from the roll, check that it overlaps the ends of the box by just a couple of inches. A sturdy paper will help you achieve crisper folds and prevent tears when wrapping. For the simplest wrapping design, try kraft paper (brown mailing paper), which can be dressed up with ribbons, cutouts or stamps.

WISDOM TEETH Wisdom teeth, also known as “third molars,” are the last teeth to develop and erupt into the mouth. Unfortunately, they are the most common teeth to be ‘impacted’ or unable to fully erupt between the ages of 15-20, but can be seen earlier or appear much later in life. Impacted teeth are not able to erupt through the gum tissue fully or at all. This can be due to many reasons, including lack of room for the teeth (jaw growth), malposition of teeth or pathology. Nearly everyone has at least 1 impacted wisdom tooth. Why are wisdom teeth removed? There are many reasons wisdom teeth require removal; These include pain, swelling, infection, orthodontic treatment, periodontal disease, cavities, shifting of teeth, age and pathology (such as cyst development). If not removed, impacted wisdom teeth could lead to damage of adjacent teeth or cause infection, which is a very common reason that they are removed. If they do erupt fully, they often are difficult to clean and maintain, have bacteria associated with them which can lead to systemic infection and illness that can affect the heart and make management of other illnesses such as diabetes more difficult. If the teeth remain impacted as people age, other pathology can develop, such as cysts and tumors. Management of these situations is often compromised by anatomy and other medical concerns. Pain-free does not mean problem-free or pathology-free. If the wisdom teeth erupt fully, are hygienic and without pathology, proper follow up is in order with periodic exam and x-rays. What is the best age to remove wisdom teeth? Studies have consistently shown that removing wisdom teeth in the teen years is by far easier for patients. This is due to bone being softer, roots not being fully developed, better healing process, and an essentially uncomplicated or benign medical history. Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons and Wisdom Teeth If you have been recommended to have your wisdom teeth removed, you will most likely be referred to an Oral Surgeon (OMS) for evaluation. OMS’s remove thousands of teeth, including wisdom teeth, every year. They perform hundreds of anesthetics for various reasons every year, have advanced training in surgical and anesthetic complications and employ a team that is certified in anesthetic care giving. There are various types of anesthetics that an OMS can administer in a very safe and controlled environment. Most often, as a result of their extensive training and experience, teeth removed by an OMS results in less pain, swelling, infection and other complications.

DID YOU KNOW? A report published in the Lancet in 2012 suggests that a lack of exercise now causes as many deaths across the globe as smoking. A team of 33 researchers representing centers around the world contributed to the study. It was determined that about onethird of all adults are not getting enough physical activity to keep them healthy and to prevent the nearly 5.3 million deaths per year that can be linked to sedentary lifestyles. The United States Department of Health and Human Services recommends that adults get 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity per week, or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity. It’s also beneficial to do a combination of activities for exercise variety.
DEAR DR. ROACH: I walk 30-60 minutes about four times a week and drink several times from a water bottle that I carry with me. Would it be OK to occasionally substitute caffeine-free diet soda for the water? ANSWER: I’ve talked a few times about diet soda, and the controversy about whether it helps people lose weight or whether, despite having zero calories, it makes people more likely to gain weight. There has been evidence for both. A recent and fascinating study was published showing that artificially sweetened beverages predispose a person to higher blood sugars, and that the effect was due to changes in the bacteria in our gut (called the microbiome). These bacteria have become the focus of intensive study of how important they are for our overall health. I recommend against habitual use of artificially sweetened beverages. Occasional use of diet soda is unlikely to harm much; however, water -- still or bubbly, plain or with a wedge of fruit -- is the best and most natural way to hydrate. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 68 years old, and will be having bypass surgery soon. After my surgery, will L-arginine be good for my heart? I know I will be walking every day. -- G.J.S. ANSWER: L-arginine, an amino acid, has been shown to increase nitric oxide in blood vessels of people with high blood cholesterol and blockages in their arteries. There are two studies I know of that showed no effect from arginine on blood flow or inflammation. On the other hand, one study showed that supplements of arginine, along with phytoestrogens, B vitamins and vitamins C and E (as part of a medical nutrition bar) in people with angina improved some blood flow measurements and the ability to exercise on the treadmill. It also has been shown to have some benefits in people with heart failure. Based on these studies, I don’t recommend arginine after cardiac bypass surgery. However, there may some benefit, and since it is unlikely to be harmful, I wouldn’t try to dissuade someone who wanted to give it a try. The booklet on heart attacks, America’s No. 1 killer, explains what happens, how they are treated and how they can be avoided. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 102W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I had radiation treatment in 2011 for a goiter. I know tanning beds are very dangerous, but are spray tans dangerous for me? -- V.V. ANSWER: Dihydroxyacetone, the most common coloring agent in spray-on tans, is generally considered safe, but you should avoid getting it around your eyes, mouth and nose. There is some controversy, but the Food and Drug Administration has considered it safe. The radiation treatment for goiter slightly increases risk for cancer, especially leukemia. I think it reasonable to do what you can to reduce cancer risk, but I don’t think tanning spray is a big risk. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. Seniors and exericse: Tips to avoid injuries, get healthy
Exercise is an important component of a healthy lifestyle. Daily exercise can improve mood, promote an active lifestyle and reduce a person’s risk for a host of ailments, including diabetes and heart disease. Despite the importance of exercise, many people live sedentary lifestyles into their golden years. Seniors who want to embrace a healthier way of life and get more physically active should first consult with their physicians before beginning an exercise regimen. Certain medications may limit just how far seniors can push themselves, while preexisting conditions may make specific types of exercise off limits. After discussing their limitations with their physicians and developing a safe exercise routine, seniors can heed the following tips to avoid injury but still get healthy. · Pick a partner. Whether it’s a spouse or a friend who is physically active or wants to be, try exercising with a partner,

at least initially. Doing so can provide the motivation you need and partners can serve as safety nets should you need assistance completing an exercise or suffer an injury and require medical attention. Personal trainers can serve as your partner, and many gyms offer discounts to seniors on personal training services. · Start slowly. Seniors who have not been physically active for some time should take a gradual approach to exercise. Instead of heading right for the treadmill, exercise bike or elliptical machine, start walking every day. When it rains, find a treadmill you can walk on. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons recommends seniors begin by determining how many steps they can take in a day and then gradually working toward 10,000 to 15,000 steps per day. Utilize step counting apps on your smartphone to track your progress. Apply the same slow approach to strength training exercises, lifting only very light weights at first before gradually increasing weight as your body acclimates to the exercises. · Stretch. Bodies that have been inactive for lengthy periods of time are inflexible, and lack of flexibility increases your risk for injury. The AAOS recommends that seniors warm up their bodies before stretching with five to 10 minutes of low-intensity activity such as walking. Then stretch gently, remembering to relax and breathe during each stretch. · Switch things up. When strength training, do not work the same muscle group two days in a row. Muscles need time to recover. If you prefer circuit strength training where you exercise various muscle groups in one day, do not strength train on back-to-back days, leaving at least one day in between strength training sessions so muscles have ample time to recover.
MOMENTS IN TIME • The History Channel • On Jan. 5, 1949, President Harry Truman announces in his State of the Union address that every American has a right to expect from our government a “fair deal,” including national health insurance, public housing, civil-rights legislation and federal aid to education. To some, the Fair Deal smacked of socialism.
To keep the heart unwrinkled, to be hopeful, kindly, cheerful, reverent - that is to triumph over old age. ~ Thomas Bailey Aldrich

Enjoy dining out w it h k ids Practice : Daniel Post Senning, the great-grandson of etiquette expert Emily Post and co-author of “ Emily Post’s Etiquette, 18th edition,” says parents can practice dining out by replicating the experience (as much as possible) at home. Ask the children to use inside voices and exhibit proper behavior at the dinner table. Remove children from the table if they misbehave and try again another time. Parents also can acclimate their youngsters to dining out by gradually w orking their w ay up to more formal restaurants. Start by dining out at a place w here table behavior or noise may be more tolerable, such as a fast-food restaurant, before moving on to a casual restaurant and then a nicer restaurant w hen kids can handle it.

The Finger Lakes Concert Band, under the direction of Gregory Kane, celebrated the holidays with a special concert entitled “In the Spirit of Giving” on Sunday, December 18, 2016 at the Canandaigua Academy Auditorium, 435 East Street, Canandaigua, NY. According to Kane, “The concert is our gift to the Canandaigua community.” Traditional Christmas favorites, as well as lesser-known but wonderful seasonal additions, were featured in the performance. “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” “Babes in Toyland,” “The Nutcracker” and “Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire” were included in the festive arrangements along with a beautiful composition of “Blue Lake.” Sponsored by Hochstein School of Music & Dance and comprised of adult instrumentalists and advanced high school students from the Greater Finger Lakes community, the Finger Lakes Concert Band rehearses weekly and gives several concerts per year featuring a wide variety of music ranging from standard wind band literature and orchestral transcriptions to music of the jazz and pop idioms. Mr. Gregory Kane currently teaches music in the Canandaigua school system

The December 3rd Santa’s Coming to Town event was again well attended and appreciated by the parents and community, with lots of fun for the children. Thanks to the Hancock family and Rotary Interact volunteers, including Sarah Carney, Madison Luft and Eliza Kime for make and take craft projects. Thanks to Thinking of You Photography by Greg and Peggy Norry for photos with Santa, always a big hit. ACS Art students including Carolyn Farmer, Parker Hughes, Izzy Marzec and Madison Marzec were kept very busy and did a fantastic job with face painting. Thanks to the Avon United Methodist Women who provided tempting cookie arrangements beautifully wrapped for the bake sale. Thanks to The Avon Preservation & Historical Society who offered beautiful poinsettias and crafts. Thanks to the Girl Scouts of WNY for their participation. Of course, thanks to all the volunteers and Avon Central School, Tops Markets and Dunkin Donuts for donations for the event. What a wonderful, generous and supportive community that we live in! On November 20th my 3 month old son and I were driving down Route 77 when our car fishtailed and rolled off the road into a ditch. As a first time mom the terror I felt was unimaginable. I wanted to express my gratitude to the woman and her son who graciously let us stay in their pickup truck while we waited for the EMT to arrive. I regret never getting your name to send our thanks, the prayer blanket you gave my son to keep him warm has been by his side ever since. You were a blessing when we needed it most, thank you. Thanks to the community for their support of the Red Kettle Drive for the Salvation Army! Whether you dropped coins in the kettle or volunteered to ring the bell, you made a positive impact on an initiative that helps to provide essential services to those in need!
“Joy to the World” - A large group of home schooled children and their moms came to the GCNH on 12/16/16 to sing Christmas carols! You brought joy to the residents with your radiant voices and smiles. It is ever exciting to see children loving on the forgotten ones!!! Thank you for serving and blessing us all! Merry Christmas! Thank you to Mr. Greene and parent volunteers for giving up their time to put on a free basketball program for the 3rd and 4th graders in LeRoy. It’s a great way for kids to keep active this winter! To Kathy Lutz, Thank you for the heartfelt care you generously give others and wonderful outlook on life. You are an amazing lady! I, unfortunately, have to go to dialysis due to kidney failure. WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A TEAM PLAYER The ability to communicate, interact and work collectively with others is both a professional and personal asset. But in certain ways, the reliance on technology has made working as a team more complicated. People have grown accustomed to spending large quantities of time alone working at computers or on phones and tablets, potentially compromising their ability to work directly with others when the need arises. According to Monster.com, when it comes to choosing a candidate for a new job or promotion, employers consistently say they want a team player. That means it’s advantageous for professionals looking to further their careers to brush up on their team-building and social skills.
