Crowd control: Local restaurants tend to be smaller and more intimate than many chain restaurants. This can translate into a calm dining experience. When crowds are small, the noise level inside the restaurant may be muted and service may be fast because there aren’t as many tables to serve. Furthermore, local establishments, although concerned about making a profit, may be less worried about table turnover rate, preferring to let diners linger if it means repeat business.

TRY A TASTE OF HISPANIC HERITAGE (NAPSI)—National Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity to acknowledge the history, culture and contributions of the people of Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America, and Spain. One of the best ways to celebrate, many say, is with food. Making that easy is one restaurant chain that’s having a year-round love affair with Latin and Hispanic cuisine. Long known for its authentic Tex-Mex roots, Church’s Chicken®/Texas Chicken® has spent years championing the commemorative period—which runs from September15 to October 15th—on a global stage. The first Hispanic influence on the company’s menu was the jalapeño pepper—the very first side item ever offered at the restaurant chain. The peppers were added to the menu due to a San Antonio tradition of squeezing their juice over various foods to give them a south-of-theborder style “kick” of heat and spice. The restaurant’s sister brand, Texas Chicken, features the Mexicana Burger on menus worldwide. This tasty chicken burger is a fiesta of tastes and textures, with a juicy hand-battered chicken breast fillet that’s topped “taco style” with cheese, fresh lettuce, tomato, spicy mayo, crunchy tortilla chips and chopped onions.

GIVE THE GIFT OF DELICIOUS COFFEE (NAPSI)—Have you ever wondered what to buy a friend for the holidays and wished you could get them something that they would enjoy every day? Everyone has at least one friend who simply cannot live without their coffee. If that friend uses a pod brewing system, they are choosing convenience and speed but sacrificing flavor and value. When they buy coffee pods, they are paying about $40 per pound of coffee. A drip coffee maker brews somewhat better-tasting coffee but people probably waste half the coffee that they brew. That is like doubling what you pay per pound of coffee. Better Taste, Less Waste There are some great inexpensive devices for brewing a wonderful single cup of coffee. Manual brewers, many say, brew the best cup of coffee you can make at home. With these brewers you can use your favorite freshly roasted local coffee, and furthermore, you don’t waste any. You brew only the number of cups you want. With a brewer like the AeroPress coffee maker you can brew a rich, delicious cup of coffee with no bitterness in just a minute or two. The process is simple, clean up is fast and easy, and the grounds including the filter are compostable. Every ounce of coffee you buy ends up in a cup you drink, so none of your money goes down the drain. It’s possible to brew café-quality coffee at home without spending hundreds of dollars on a machine or wasting half the coffee you brewed. Give the gift of a manual brewing device to help your friends brew one or two cups at a time using freshly roasted coffee, and they’ll thank you for helping them get the most out of every bag of coffee they buy. Snowy Thoughts By Rita Lambert In winter when the snowflakes fall and spread a blanket over all our feathered friends fly all around and find no food upon the ground. I’m sure they’re pleased with all the folk that know that hunger is no joke, those faithful ones that meet their needs with suet tied upon their trees and feeders filled with seedy treats. How do they thank them for these eats? The joy to see their colors bright eating away with such delight is all the thanks they really need for doing this most gracious deed.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Try to say as little as possible about the work you’re doing through the end of the month. Then you can make your announcement and accept your welldeserved plaudits. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You face a more difficult challenge than you expected. But with that strong Taurean determination, you should be able to deal with it successfully by week’s end. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Before you act on your “feelings” about that upcoming decision, it might be wise to do a little fact-checking first. You could be very much surprised by what you don’t find. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) A recent workplace success can open some doors that were previously closed to you. On a personal level, expect to receive some important news from a longtime friend and colleague. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Put your wounded pride aside and do what you must to heal that misunderstanding before it takes a potentially irreversible turn and leaves you regretting the loss of a good friend. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) One way to kick a less-than-active social life into high gear or rebuild an outdated contacts list is to throw one of your well-organized get-togethers for friends and associates. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Getting out of an obligation you didn’t really want to take on can be tricky. An honest explanation of the circumstances can help. Next time, pay more attention to your usually keen instincts. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Use your Scorpion logic to push for a no-nonsense approach to a perplexing situation. This could help keep present and potential problems from creating more confusion. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A friend’s problem might take more time than you want to give. But staying with it once again proves the depth of your Sagittarian friendship and loyalty. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The Sea Goat can benefit from an extra dose of self-confidence to unsettle your detractors, giving you the advantage of putting on a strong presentation of your position. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) You might want to ask a friend or relative for advice on an ongoing personal matter. But be careful not to give away information you might later wish you had kept secret. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Use the weekend for a creativity break to help restore your spiritual energy. Once that’s done, you’ll be back and more than ready to tackle whatever challenge you need to face. BORN THIS WEEK: You get great joy out of creating beautiful things and sharing them with others who appreciate them. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the Highway Loss Data Institute, roughly 10 percent of all highway deaths involve large trucks. Braking capability can play a role in such deaths, as the IIHS notes that loaded tractortrailers take between 20 and 40 percent farther than cars to fully stop. That discrepancy is even greater on poorly maintained roads or roads marked by adverse conditions such as ice, rain and/ or snow. While 16 percent of the roughly 3,600 people who died in large truck crashes in the United States in 2014 were truck occupants, more than four times that many people (68 percent) were occupants of cars and other passenger vehicles. That’s because large trucks typically weigh 20 to 30 times more than passenger vehicles, meaning occupants in cars and passenger trucks are incredibly susceptible to serious injury or death should they get in accidents with tractor-trailers and other large trucks. Time of day also must be considered when examining large truck crashes and fatalities. While 17 percent of deaths in 2014 took place between the hours of noon and 3 p.m., that figure dropped to 11 percent between the typical rush hours of 6 p.m. and 9 p.m.

585-335-9380 Did You Know? Animals verbalize in many different ways to communicate. One thing cat owners may notice is that cats have a tendency to meow as a form of speaking with humans. However, according to the North Shore Animal League America, cats almost never meow at other cats, as meowing is a sound generally reserved for interacting with humans. Cat owners should talk back to their cats often, as cats enjoy hearing their own names and their owners’ voices.

Penny Saver Pet of the Week Hi, my name is Mya Rose. I am a Toy Yorkiepoo who is active and fun loving. I love retrieving my toys and playing tug-a-war with my family. At only 7.5 lbs, I try to be fierce and brave to secure the premises, but will quickly roll over for a good belly rub. My favorite places to enjoy are being cuddled by my adopted friend, Naomi, in her wheelchair; laying beside my big, cockapoo brother, Reese; or curled up and snuggled beside my adopted mom or dad. By the way, I hate bows in my hair!
Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it as the “POW.” Featured pets will be entered in the Pet of the Year Contest & become eligible to win a gift. PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM Vets advise that dog owners should be able to easily feel and count dogs’ ribs when they run their fingers across the side of the animal. Pets viewed from above should display an hourglass figure that includes an indentation near the midsection. The absence of this “waist” may indicate a problem. When observing a pet from the side while he or she is standing, a slight upward slope of the stomach should be visible. A low-hanging abdomen means abdominal fat may be present.

For those who sent food, donations, flowers, cards or sent message of condolences, we are truly grateful. We offer heartfelt thanks to those who visited Phyllis while at hospital, attended her wake, service and burial. A special word of thanks to the medical team who cared for Phyllis throughout this tough battle with cancer: Dr. Tasaddaq; Dr. Dombrowski and Pluta Cancer Center; Wilmot Cancer Center and Wills Eye Hospital. To the staff in the Emergency Room and 3rd floor at Noyes Memorial Hospital and Livingston County Hospice who cared for Phyllis, thank you. Thank you to Shawn Harnish for the beautiful memorial service and to Carl and Christian Hindle for your
sensitive and professional handling of arrangements. For the prayer service given by the VFW Auxiliary, your words were so kind and very much appreciated during this tough time. To the Dansville Central School family and the Cheerleading family, thank you for all your thoughtfulness and support. And for the many friends and Adams/Quay St. neighbors, we are truly grateful. As it would be impossible to thank everyone individually, please accept this acknowledgment as an expression of our heartfelt appreciation. Phyllis will be forever missed; however, know she will live on in the hearts of all who shared their grief during this difficult time. LONG-DISTANCE CAREGIVING (NAPSI)—Chances are, at some point you will be a caregiver to a friend or family member. Providing care and support can be challenging in any circumstance, but caring for a loved one who lives far away presents a unique set of challenges. When providing care for loved ones who do not live nearby, keep the following three tips in mind. Plan ahead. Learn your loved one’s medical wishes, contact information for doctors as well as important financial and insurance information. Research community options. Many older adults need a little help to stay healthy and independent. Area Agencies on Aging and other communitybased organizations can connect caregivers to programs that help with transportation, personal care services, nutrition, home modification and repairs, legal services, falls prevention programs and more. Care for yourself. The Eldercare Locator can connect caregivers to local resources that can help, including caregiver support programs that can provide training, and support groups and other resources that help caregivers better support their loved ones—and themselves. The Eldercare Locator can help both care recipients and their longdistance caregivers. Through its website, www.eldercare.acl.gov, and national Call Center at (800) 677-1116, the Eldercare Locator connects long-distance caregivers to resources that can provide assistance where it is needed most—in the care recipient’s own community. The Eldercare Locator is funded by the U.S. Administration for Community Living and is administered by the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging.

DID YOU KNOW? The Internet has made it easier than ever before to access information quickly. But people who look to the Internet for answers to their medical questions may be doing themselves more harm than good. A 2013 study from the Pew Research Center found that one-third of study participants had gone online to diagnose a medical condition. While the Internet can be a valuable resource, self-diagnosing medical conditions can be dangerous, as the risk of misdiagnosing signs or symptoms is considerable. But misdiagnosis is not the only potential problem of relying on the Internet instead of certified physicians for medical advice. “Cyberchondria” is a term used to described the unfounded escalation of concerns about certain symptoms a person might be experiencing. These unfounded concerns escalate as individuals search for and read information about their symptoms online. In fact, a 2008 Microsoft analysis of online search patterns found that one-third of the hundreds of thousands of people examined in the analysis tended to escalate their medical-related searches, potentially turning relatively minor medical conditions into something far worse, all without consulting a doctor. Men and women concerned about symptoms or medical problems should resist the temptation to self-diagnose online and should book an appointment with their physicians instead.
urologist did not answer some questions I have. I was told by my regular doctor that aging is a factor in men losing leg hair. Is that true? I am losing pubic hair, and even hair up to the navel. Why is that? Years ago, I found that I had lost the hair between my legs. A medication I was prescribed (Lexapro/Celexa) had bad side effects for me. It caused sexual problems and the loss of perineum hair. Could there be a connection? It is funny that I have only slight chest hair reduction and little back hair loss. Maybe the urologist brushed me off, but it is important to me. I had been under a lot of stress during the summer. -- T.K. ANSWER: When I see leg hair being lost, the first thing I worry about is the circulation in the legs. This can be an early sign of peripheral vascular disease, which is important to recognize because it is treatable and also predicts greater risk of heart attack and stroke. If you have any risk factors for vascular disease, I would talk to your doctor about getting this tested, which is easy and noninvasive. However, the loss of pubic hair makes me concerned about a drop in testosterone. This can cause sexual troubles as well, but it sounds like your sexual issues were related to the medication, which is not uncommon with both Lexapro and Celexa. That’s a simple blood test. Severe stress can rarely cause loss of all body hair, alopecia universalis, but that is really ALL hair, including eyebrows and eyelashes, which is not what you have.
*** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an 80-year-old female, and I bruise from the slightest tap on my skin. My skin is very thin. When you press too hard on my arm or leg, it hurts. I have seen vascular specialists, but I have been told it is because of my thin skin. I feel like I should live in a bubble. My doctor says the same thing as the specialists. Do you have any suggestions to make my veins stronger? I am taking vitamin C, as I read that this might help. -- J.C. ANSWER: Easy bruising is a common problem in the elderly, and although it sometimes is an indication of serious disease, most of the time it is benign. I begin to worry when I see bleeding from the gums or nose, with multiple large bruises with no trauma, or in people with a family history of bleeding. Some simple laboratory tests can help decide whether this is likely a sign of internal disease. In the majority of cases, with none of the worry signs above, people can be reassured. Vitamin C and vitamin K deficiency can cause easy bruising, so foods high in these nutrients or a supplement can be tried. I recommend getting these through food rather than supplements, if possible. A few years ago, a study showed that a bioflavonoid supplement helped with easy bruising, and most pharmacies and health-food stores carry bioflavonoid supplements if diet is inadequate. Many fruits and vegetables are high in these compounds, especially citrus fruits, legumes, hot peppers and onions. These certainly can’t hurt, and may help. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. REDUCE RADON IN YOUR HOME Testing can determine if radon is present in a home. Homeowners can rely on professional companies or purchase self-testing kits at home improvement retailers. If a test comes back positive for high levels, conduct a follow-up test before taking any measures to fix the problem. Unusual weather can increase radon levels. If repeat testing yields the same results, efforts to reduce radon levels are necessary. Homeowners must keep in mind that no two situations are the same and various techniques may be necessary to reduce radon levels in a home. Simply opening the windows in a home may not be enough, and many radon remedies require the skilled services of professional contractors who are experienced in radon reduction procedures. Homes can be fixed, but some instances may be best left to the professionals.

The Cake Place: Belle of the 2019 Chocolate Ball By Amanda Dudek Dance, The Catholic Charities Gala, Make A Wish, and The United Way. O
n February 2, 2019, Rochester hosted the 33rd Annual Chocolate Ball at the Hyatt Regency in support of EpilepsyPralid. This year’s theme was “Chocolate and Cake and the Difference We’ll Make,” fittingly Seussian for the event’s Dr. Seuss motif. The Chocolate Ball was an exquisite gala featuring elegant food, drinks, music, with a chance to sample and purchase award-winning chocolate cakes from our Signature Cake Chef Competition. Proceeds from the Ball support EPI’s epilepsy-specific services and programs. Contributing to this glamorous and thoroughly enjoyable event was The Cake Place of Avon. “We are honored to participate in this annual event,” said The Cake Place owner and award-winning baker, Melissa Savino. “The event raises money and increases awareness for Epilepsy-Pralid,” Savino explained. “It is really a great night. Scott Hetsko MCs, and the speakers at the Gala are really inspiring. Families and individuals share their experiences and insights about what living with Epilepsy is all about – both the struggles and the successes – and how Epilepsy-Pralid is an invaluable source of support.” Participating is no small commitment either. Savino explains that participating Cake Chefs arrive at the Hyatt Regency in Rochester in the morning and must be set up between 9:00 and 10:00 am. Participants set up a showpiece cake and a tasting cake. “There can be no indication where each cake is from or which bakery it is from,” said Savino. “Three judges sample the tasting cakes and score them.” The Chocolate Ball itself doesn’t start until 5:30 that evening. Guests receive samples of the tasting cakes and vote on which ones they like best. During the dinner that follows, the awards are announced in four categories and runners up in Best Taste and Best Showpiece: Best Taste, Best Showpiece, People’s Choice and Grand Prize Overall. The Cake Place did itself and its community proud. “We were shocked to win the top honors in four awards,” said Savino. “Last year, we won Best Showpiece and Grand Prize Overall, and the year before that, we were 1st runner up in Best Taste. We have truly learned something each year!” Of course, the most important thing to Melissa Savino was the benefit to those with Epilepsy. “All the showpiece cakes are auctioned, and the proceeds go to Epilepsy-Pralid,” Savino explained. “It is an honor to support organizations like this. They are very passionate about their cause, and they just want the best for the people they support.” The extraordinary, award-winning showpiece cake by The Cake Place sold for over $2,000 at the 2019 Chocolate Ball auction, a fact that makes Cake Chef Savino very proud. “Baking was really just a hobby that grew into this business,” Savino said. “I didn’t open The Cake Place until I was 50 years old.” Now in their third year, Melissa Savino is so proud of how much the fledgling business has grown. “It has been great,” she said. “Avon is a great community, and our neighbors have been very supportive. We are next door to the Avon Inn, and we are delighted to work with them, as well as many other businesses in the community and throughout the area. We donate desserts or gift certificates to numerous groups and non-profit fundraisers such as The Teresa House
When looking to the future, Savino plans to continue to make extraordinary cakes and desserts and to embrace opportunities as they come. “We bake everything custom, to order, fresh,” she said. “It is great to make cool cakes, but if they don’t taste delicious, it defeats the purpose!” Savino noted that, for example, wedding cakes, while they may be beautiful, have to be tasty, too, because that is what the guests are going to experience and remember. This business plan of combining beautiful design with delicious flavor seems to be working. “We get a lot of our business by referrals, and we now receive orders throughout Western New York just based on word-of-mouth. We have served our cakes from the OnCenter in Syracuse all the way to Buffalo. We even shipped a cake to the Midwest.” In its three short years, The Cake Place even found its way onto television. “We were on Cake Wars in 2016 as part of the Space Jam episode and were runners up to a returning winner,” said Savino, noting that they also met the cake chef who made the giant cake in the middle of the Superbowl NFL 100 commercial. “He lives in California and we are still online friends with him and keep in touch,” Savino added. Success doesn’t appear to have changed The Cake Place, however. “For now, our plans are to stay the course,” Melissa Savino states. “We are in a good place, and we are going to keep doing what we are doing: supporting the community and making great cakes.” When asked what keeps her going, Savino responded, “My family is very supportive and wonderful. They accept my long hours and the craziness. I also really enjoy what I do.” While The Cake Place continues to be open by appointment only, it is another kind of appointment that has Melissa and her husband excited this year. “We have one grandson and will welcome our 2nd grandbaby into the world sometime this year!” Have something interesting you’d like to share with our readers? Protecting Your Vision From Diabetes (NAPSI)—Diabetes kills more Americans each year than AIDS and breast cancer combined—and can cause serious problems throughout the body. According to the National Eye Institute, eye health, for example, can become critically compromised. Around 30.3 million Americans, or 9.4 percent of the population, are living with diabetes, with about 1.5 million more being diagnosed every year. The longer someone has diabetes, the greater his or her chances are of developing diabetic retinopathy, or damage to the blood vessels in the retina. According to the National Eye Institute, between 40 and 45 percent of people diagnosed with diabetes have some degree of diabetic retinopathy. While being overweight and leading a sedentary lifestyle are certainly linked to diabetes, social and environmental factors such as poverty, stress, and lack of safe housing and access to a healthy diet can also compromise your health and ultimately contribute to the development of type 2 diabetes. According to America’s Health Insurance Plans, addressing these social determinants of health has become a top priority for Medicaid programs. “We encourage our members with diabetes to have regular eye exams to rule out complications,” said Dr. Andrea Gelzer, senior vice president of medical affairs at AmeriHealth Caritas, a national leader in Medicaid managed care and other health care solutions for those most in need. “We educate our members so they understand that living a healthy lifestyle, controlling their blood sugar and having regular eye exams can help save their vision.” Simple steps can help mitigate the effects of diabetes and may potentially delay complications from diabetic eye disease, including controlling your blood sugar and blood pressure, monitoring your cholesterol, seeing your doctor regularly, and having a dilated eye exam at least once per year—or more if recommended by your eye care professional. AmeriHealth Caritas is part of the Independence Health Group in partnership with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and one of the nation’s leaders in health care solutions for those most in need. To the person who vented about a medical scooter in the road: while the sidewalks may have been plowed, they are also very badly uneven. Cracks, whether from wear or roots can stop mobility equipment abruptly, sending the user over the handlebars.
Often, ramps to get onto and off the sidewalk also have tall lips. People on a fixed income, such as the disabled often are, may not be able to afford reflective vests and lights. Rather than demanding the disabled stay home, why don’t you contact the town for better maintenance and lighting for the sidewalks, and perhaps keep reflective items in your car to give to a disabled person who does not have them? To the person who stole my package the week before Christmas: I waited weeks for that package to arrive with gifts for my loved ones. Because of you I wasn’t prepared for my aunt’s
Christmas party. Karma will catch up with you! I work at a home for homeless veterans in a canal town. I have a 79-year-old veteran who walks up to 12 miles daily. That is not bad for a 79-yearold Vietnam veteran. A local lady walking her dog told this vet he couldn’t walk down her street, near her or even in her area. How could you be so arrogant and unwelcoming to a veteran in your community? This man not only served his country in a bad era but now is told that he is not welcome to walk down your street, as well. Who are you to tell him that? This man is healthy and loves your community, yet this is how you treat your fellow
neighbor? A Veteran? Thank God the community for the most part has been absolutely wonderful to our house because you left a poor impression on his and our staff ’s minds. Thank God the rest of the world isn’t as heartless. It’s so disconcerting to see Christmas trees on the side of the curb within walking distance of a local park where they recycle them for free. Please check your town’s website. There is so little space left in the landfills. My town uses the chips to put on their trails. Some will give you the mulch. At least take off the tinsel and lights so they don’t get put in the landfill with the trees.
Brighter Side Thank you, East Rochester PD! Sunday night, I had to go in to work by 8. I was outside by 6:15 knowing it would be outrageous out. I drive a little Mazda. I managed to bulldoze (in reverse) to the street. However since the sidewalks had been plowed, I got stuck on the packed snow. I saw a police officer exit his SUV and approach. Without hesitation, this man (also without gloves) helped me free my car by giving it a push back in my driveway then taking his steel shovel to break up the packed ice and snow. He had no cause to stop and help but chose to, and it saved me an incredible struggle. Thank you, Officer Bryant Ferry! R.C.
Our Pittsford Seniors program participants collected 100 coats during Monroe County’s “Coats for Seniors” campaign this past December. The coats are sent to area shelters where they are distributed to those in need. Thanks to partnerships with several community groups and organizations - including our seniors! - the Coats for Seniors Campaign has collected and distributed over 10,000 coats during its 15-year history. Love thy neighbors: Many thanks to my “snow removal elves!” My driveway has been cleared every storm, thanks to my caring neighbors and
daughter. Much appreciation to Kati, Rod, Vicky, Steve & April. Their Luck Lady – Kitty It is hard enough to lose a pet. The event is made even more difficult when the decision as to whether or not to euthanize falls on the shoulders of the pet owner. Dr. Carrie DiCarlo at Perry Pet, along with all her staff, should be recognized for their sympathetic and respectful attitudes towards both their patients and their owners, especially at such an emotional time of loss. My family also received written condolences from Roger’s Hair Salon, where another wonderful group of compassionate people work. We are blessed to have such truly caring and compassionate
people in our community. So many people go to work and just “go through the motions.” The people at these two local businesses put their hearts into their work; it is truly appreciated!
