Hi, my name is Denali (Siberian Husky) 2 years old and my brother is Mack (German Shepherd) also 2. We live on a farm with our family. We love to run in the fields, run along with the 4-wheeler and swim. Our friends come over for “play dates” and enjoy the open fields to run and play as well! Our friends are Macy (Blue Nose Pit Bull) age 3, Bella (Rottweiler) age 1½ and RJay (Small Terrier) age 6. We all are very friendly and social with other animals and people. Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it as the “POW.” Featured pets will be entered in the Pet of the Year Contest & become eligible to win a gift. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. For return of photos, please include a selfaddressed, stamped envelope. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

DID YOU KNOW? Broadening one’s horizons through crafting can be a worthwhile pursuit. Crafting can serve as a relaxing pastime and provide an opportunity to learn rewarding skills. Learning to crochet is one way for men and women to combine creativity and practicality. Crochet is a form of handwork using yarn and a crochet hook. According to the Crochet Guild of America, there’s no way to know just how old the art of crochet is. However, crochet expert Annie Potter has said the modern form of the art originated in the 16th century, primarily in France and England. Others surmise crocheting traces its origins to Arabia before it spread westward through various Mediterranean trade routes.

MOST POPULAR ETHNIC CUISINES ACROSS THE COUNTRY What constitutes “ethnic” food differs from person to person. Someone of Italian descent may dine regularly on garlic-infused pasta dishes, while a person from another area of the world may find such foods exotic. In the cultural melting pot of North America, various cuisines representing countries that span the globe are within arm’s length for many people. According to Technomic, a Chicago-based research firm, 77 percent of Americans enjoy ethnic foods while dining out once a month. Around 38 percent order ethnic food weekly. In addition, many more people prepare ethnic cuisine at home. A growing interest in ethnic foods is fueled by young people. Technomic notes that millennials are more apt to want to try various cuisines and then incorporate them into their regular dining experiences. The National Restaurant Association found that 60 percent of people are likely to “tie their favorite ethnic food to their family history.” Interest in ethnic foods tends to be highest in urban areas where restaurants and ingredients may be more readily available. When it comes to the top ethnic cuisines enjoyed throughout the states or provinces and territories, Chinese, Mexican and Italian rally for the top spots on diners’ plates. While the NRA has Italian cuisine as earning topbilling, Technomic’s list says that Chinese food, at 76 percent, followed by Mexican food (74 percent) and Italian (71 percent) comprise the biggest ethnic draws. Japanese or sushi comes in a distant fourth at 32 percent in the United States. The statistics portal Statista indicates that, as of January 2015, Chinese, American and Italian foods are quite popular in Canada. However, the percentage of people who cook these foods as opposed to eating them out at a restaurant varies. Chinese food is most widely enjoyed in a restaurant setting, while Italian food is frequently whipped up at home. As immigration tides change, ethnic cuisine may change with them. However, interest in experiencing ethnic dining is likely to remain consistent.

Begin Again Horse Rescue Faces Full Stalls By Amanda Dudek perhaps $8,000-10,000 in grants a year, but this has dropped to around $3,000.” Lilly explains that this is due to increasing competition for available grants as well as grant types. Many available grants are not specifically for horse rescue, but rather, they involve a service component, such as working with people with special needs or helping veterans. Therefore, Lilly and her rescue partners are finding ways to expand Begin Again.
Jennif Lilly with Countdown, Jennifer C tdo a miniature miniat horse ho who’s owner passedd aaway. He was in need of a new home and found one, even at 30 years old.
J
ennifer Lilly, a founder and Executive Director at Begin Again Horse Rescue in Lima, has a passion for horses and educating others on their care and wellbeing. The nonprofit organization, Begin Again Horse Rescue, takes in horses at risk of neglect, abuse and possible slaughter. Lately, there have been more horses in need than stalls available. Begin Again Horse Rescue formed in 2009 with just Lilly and two other friends, helping horses from bad situations. “We take in horses at risk of neglect, abuse and possible slaughter, work with area humane societies which have no or limited facilities for horses, save them from auctions as well as accept owner surrenders,” said Lilly, current Vice President and Head of Intake. “Then, we rehabilitate them and find them new homes.” At first, Lilly and her two friends were doing this out of their own pockets, but, as Lilly points out, horses are expensive. “We felt that by becoming a 501c3 nonprofit, we could make more impact on the problem.” Lilly stated. “We were gifted a farm on 15A in Lima in 2015, which we have been steadily repairing and renovating.” Still, the need is overwhelming. The rescue farm’s capacity is 14 horses; the rescue currently has 17 and is utilizing foster homes for the overflow. “I am getting 6-8 requests per week,” said Lilly. “We are full, and that doesn’t allow us to address those needs.” This need is growing for a wide variety of reasons. “There are so many owner surrenders: people move, finances change, divorce happens,” Lilly states. “We also work with a number of local humane societies and shelters who have done legal seizures of neglected and abused horses.” Many of these organizations do not have facilities for housing horses. In order for law enforcement to seize a neglected or abused horse, they have to have somewhere to house it; otherwise, they have no choice but to leave the animal. “We want to be there for law enforcement,” said Lilly. “If there is nowhere for these horses to go, then they cannot get the horses into a safe, healthy situation.” Since seizures often involve legal prosecution, these horses tend to have an extended stay. “We have three right now which we accepted in August as part of a neglect case,” said Lilly, explaining that until a decision is reached, these horses cannot be given new homes. Meanwhile, Begin Again cares for these recused horses, several of whom come to them in deteriorating and desperate condition. “We restore them to health, bring them up-to-date with their health care and try to get them adopted,” said Lilly. Begin Again’s adoptions are unique, however. “We do not relinquish ownership of our horses,” explained Lilly. “We put them on permanent lease. This way, if anything happens, our horses will come back to us, ensuring our horses’ safety permanently.” This lifelong relationship also includes yearly checkups on each “leased” horse. Having found new homes for over 200 horses in the last 9 years, this level of commitment does not come cheap “We are 100% funded by donations and fundraisers and the occasional private grant,” said Lilly. “Our yearly operating budget is around $90,000 per year, even though we are completely staffed with volunteers, with the exception of one full-time employee. We used to get
Lilly is no stranger to the positive impact of working with horses, having done charity work bringing horses and people together for over 20 years. “We have most recently worked with the Livingston County Workforce Development Program, SUNY Geneseo, RIT, U of R, and the Livingston County ARC to help people complete volunteer hours, as well as multiple Eagle Scout projects. “We also accept those looking to complete school-based community service and court-ordered community service.” Lilly explains that as a volunteer organization, Begin Again draws from the community, but that they do not currently have enough volunteers to run their own outreach program. “We would like to see more opportunities to benefit groups in our community,” said Lilly, looking to the future. “We go out to events just about every week during good weather with our educational booth and often accompanied by a miniature horse. Our goal is to bring awareness to the neglect taking place with horses.” Lilly explains that one of Begin Again’s long-term goals is to build an education center to hold clinics, educate groups, offer healthcare and more, all free of charge. “We believe education should not come at a cost,” Lilly stated. “We do not ever want a lack of money to stand in the way of good horse care.” “We are also working on being accredited with the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries of which we currently hold a verified status,” said Lilly, explaining that this would improve grant eligibility. This is a highly esteemed standard of excellence for animal refuges worldwide. “One of the requirements is that a property be completely fenced. Our perimeter fencing needs to be upgraded to become stronger and safer. So, this year, we have an ongoing fencing fundraiser with a $7,500 goal. MANAGING HEART FAILURE IS WORTH THE EFFORT A study by the American Heart Association shows people with HF report spending more time on managing their condition; free app aims to make it easier
(NAPSI)—The American Heart Association, the world’s leading voluntary health organization dedicated to building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke, shared this month that more heart failure patients and their caregivers report they are putting more effort into managing this complex condition. In 2015, just 55 percent of survey respondents said they were working harder to manage HF. The latest study shows a 14-point increase, with 69 percent now putting effort toward the important daily task of managing heart failure. The AHA conducted its annual survey as part of the Rise Above Heart Failure initiative, nationally supported by Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation, and found that while those diagnosed with heart failure and their caregivers are spending more time and energy managing the disease, they are benefiting. These two groups showed an increased understanding of heart failure since the survey was last conducted. “It’s important to understand heart failure or any condition you have been diagnosed with,” says John Osborne, M.D., cardiologist and American Heart Association volunteer. “It allows you to ask better questions of your healthcare providers and take an active role in your health.” Through Rise Above Heart Failure, people living with heart failure can access free tools to help make the daily task of managing medications, symptoms and doctor’s visits simpler. This includes an app called HF Path, designed to keep all aspects of heart failure management at a patient’s— or caregiver’s—fingertips. Heart failure, which occurs when the heart is not able to efficiently pump blood around the body, can cause symptoms like breathlessness, persistent coughing, swelling and fatigue. “It’s important for heart failure patients to track their symptoms day to day so they can alert their healthcare provider to any warning signs of worsening HF and get prompt treatment,” said Osborne. “World Heart Day serves as a great reminder to us all to make a promise to better understand and advocate for our own health.” Download the app at heart.org/HFPath.

FRIDAY, MARCH 1, 2019
HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Take time from your busy schedule to check out what’s going on around you. You might find that someone has been secretly trying to pull the wool over those beautiful Sheep’s eyes. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Once again, the Bovine’s boldness pays off in uncovering the source of a disturbing workplace situation. Your personal life calls for patience, as a certain matter plays itself out. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Forget about going all out to impress someone in your personal life. Just being yourself is all that matters. A workplace decision will need more time. Don’t rush into it. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Some supersensitive Crabs might take offense at what they perceive as a slight. But a closer look points to a simple misunderstanding. The weekend holds a welcome surprise. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Sure, you can roar your head off over someone’s failure to keep a promise. But the wiser course would be to ask why it happened. Be prepared for an answer that might well surprise you. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A developing relationship needs time to find its direction. So please be patient and resist pushing things along. A recently cooled-down workplace situation could heat up again. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Congratulations. Your well-thoughtout proposal seems to be working. Someone who hasn’t agreed with you on most things in the past could turn out to be one of your major supporters. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Things seem to be going well. However, you can still expect criticism -- some of it pretty heavy. But as long as you can back up your position, you’ll be able to rise above it. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Getting together with people who care for you is a great way to get that ego boost you might feel you need at this time. Things start to look brighter by week’s end. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) You should be able to continue with your plans once you get past those temporary delays. Surprise, surprise. An offer to help comes from a most unlikely source. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Prioritizing your tasks is important this week because of all those demands you have to deal with. The pressure eases in time for you to enjoy the weekend. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Save your energy and stay focused on what has to be done, despite all those distractions you’re likely to face. You should see some evidence of real progress by week’s end. BORN THIS WEEK: You are a generous, giving person who is always ready, willing and more than able to help others in need. ness the manager took care of the problem. I guess if this is a rule, parents need to know about it before they pick up cake.
Don’t forget your child’s birth certificate when you go to pick up the “free smash cake” that a local store gives for a child’s 1st birthday with the purchase of a full size cake! Crazy request that my son was not aware of until he went to get the cake for the birthday party. Thank good-
To all the people who let their cats outdoors, please stop. The reasons are simple: your cat can be hurt or even worse killed by - A. Getting hit by a vehicle. B. Poisoned intentionally or by accident. C. Kidnapped and tortured by some horrible individual or for bait in dog fighting or by people who sell them to schools for experiments. D. Hurt or killed by an animal – wild or domestic like a dog or another cat. There are so many dangers outside your cat simply cannot protect itself.
Gotta appreciate the people who walk on the ‘correct’ side which is facing traffic (for a reason!), carry a flashlight and/ or wear reflective clothing as soon as it’s a little dusky, and when there is no sidewalk, move over safely and actually look at their pet dog on a leash to make sure it is safely out of the road! Thank you. Appreciate walkers who know and apply the rules of the road! Wish the lady who was riding her bike ahead of two children...one with training wheels... at dusk almost in the middle of the road would observe others and learn; watch the safe walkers, dog walkers and bikers who really do share the road... not act like ‘king of the road’!! Don’t be an accident victim.
In December, I gave two different neighbors rides to pick up their cars both at dealerships for recalls. Their experiences could not have been different. The first vehicle was in for an emission update due to recent litigation. The service manager was arrogant and accused the government of needlessly creating the problem. The work was not completed and my neighbor was charged $150.00 for diagnostics and was quoted $2400.00 to fix the vehicle so the recall could be completed. The second vehicle needed a new air bag and was at Hoselton Chevrolet. The service personnel were courteous, and the work was finished two hours ahead of time with no charge.
Brighter Side I had an unexpected trip to Highland Hospital by way of Avon Ambulance Squad on the morning of Tuesday, January 29, 2019. I can’t express how much I appreciate the care I received by this group of young people who took such good care of me. I have never had to use this service before but was very grateful that it was available. I have always made yearly donations to this organization and now I know how important this service is. Thank you to Alex, Nick, Ashley, Kelly- you should be so proud of the job you do! Those donations that we make each year are so important for our community. Thankful Always!
Heartfelt thanks to Elizabeth for rescuing me when I was hurt in the road and taking me to the expert staff at York Animal Hospital. I appreciate Jane and Richard helping to fund my care. Thank you, Liam, for welcoming me home again! Felix, the cat with 8 more lives. On Wednesday, February 6 during the ice storm in Batavia, my husband was trying to get me to our car in the parking lot behind the Williams Law Office. A young woman with an umbrella came out of nowhere and took my other arm, shielded me from the rain and assisted my husband with getting me to the car. She apparently could
see we were having difficulty as I must wear a leg brace and on a good day, it is difficult for me to walk. This definitely was not a good day. We did not get her name as she was gone so quickly. So, we would like to thank her the only way we can think of and hope she reads the Penny Saver. We were very grateful for her help. There are still good people who do good deeds. Thank you to the tow-truck driver who stopped to help a small white dog. It was on February 4th at 10am on Clinton St. Rd. outside of Batavia. He tried to find its owner and ended up keeping the dog in his truck. I hope he found its owner. Good job!!
I would like to thank the young cashier at West’s Shurfine in Honeoye for paying for my groceries when my debit card failed to clear! I had gotten gas and had a large hold on my card (1st time that ever happened). I will pay him back, with extra as soon as I get back down there!

HELPING HEROES (NAPSI)—The Department of Defense reports that 1.3 million Americans serve in the military. If you or someone you care about is ever among them and sent overseas, you may be glad to learn about an organization that’s been assisting members of the U.S. armed forces, veterans and their families since the early 1900s: the American Red Cross. It provides emergency communication services, resiliency programs and morale activities.
Art& Soul
“We are committed to delivering critical services with a caring touch wherever and whenever they’re needed—24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year—for military members and their families at home and around the world,” said Koby Langley, senior vice president for Service to the Armed Forces at the Red Cross. Now, the organization is expanding support for U.S. military personnel in Eastern Europe with a new office in Romania. In addition to aiding military members and their families, the American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to disaster victims; supplies about 40 percent of the nation’s blood; teaches lifesaving skills; and provides humanitarian aid. A not-for-profit organization, it depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public.

An IRS Incentive To Save For Retirement (NAPS)—Tips for claiming the Saver’s Credit: 1. Check Your Eligibility Depending on your filing status and income level, you may qualify for a nonrefundable credit of up to $1,000 (or $2,000 if filing jointly) on your federal income taxes for that year when you contribute to a 401(k), 403(b), 457(b) or similar retirement plan, or IRA. To be eligible, the maximum Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) for single filers is $31,500 in 2018 and $32,000 in 2019. For the head of a household, the AGI maximum is $47,250 in 2018 and $48,000 in 2019. For those who are married and file a joint return, the AGI maximum is $63,000 in 2018 and $64,000 in 2019. You must be 18 years or older by January 1 and cannot be a full-time student or be claimed as a dependent on another person’s tax return. 2. Save for Retirement Save for retirement in your employer’s retirement plan, if offered, or in an IRA. In general, for every dollar you contribute to a qualified retirement plan or IRA (up to the lesser of the limits permitted by an employer-sponsored plan or the IRS), you defer that amount from your current overall taxable income on your federal tax returns—and you may also qualify for the Saver’s Credit. After-tax contributions, such as those made to a Roth IRA or Roth 401(k), are also eligible for the credit. You have until April 15, 2019 to make a contribution to an IRA for tax year 2018. 3. File Your Tax Return and Claim the Credit When you prepare your federal tax returns, you can claim your Saver’s Credit by subtracting this tax credit from your federal income taxes owed. Workers who are eligible to claim the Saver’s Credit are also eligible to take advantage of the IRS Free File program for taxpayers with an AGI of $66,000 or less. Twelve commercial software companies make their tax preparation software available through the Free File program at www.irs.gov/FreeFile. • If you are using tax preparation software, use Form 1040 or Form 1040NR. If your software has an interview process, be sure to answer questions about the Saver’s Credit, also referred to as the Retirement Savings Contributions Credit and/or Credit for Qualified Retirement Savings Contributions. • If you are preparing your tax returns manually, complete Form 8880, the Credit for Qualified Retirement Savings Contributions, to determine your exact credit rate and amount. Then transfer the amount to Schedule 3 (Form 1040) or Form 1040NR. • If you are using a professional tax preparer, be sure to ask about the Saver’s Credit. • Consider having any refund you receive directly deposited to an IRA to further boost your retirement savings. The 19th Annual Transamerica Retirement Survey found that 62 percent of American workers are unaware that the Saver’s Credit exists. Don’t overlook this important tax credit; it may help you pay less in your current federal income taxes while saving for retirement. Spread the word—perhaps friends and family are eligible for this incentive but are unaware of it. For more details and resources on the Saver’s Credit in English and Spanish, visit Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies® at www.transamericacenter.org/saverscredit. TCRS is a division of Transamerica Institute®, a nonprofit, private foundation. The Saver’s Credit—an overlooked tax credit made available by the IRS to eligible taxpayers—could make saving for retirement more affordable than many people realize.

IS ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE HEREDITARY? The National Institute on Aging notes that only a very rare form of Alzheimer’s disease is inherited. Early-onset familial Alzheimer’s disease, or FAD, is caused by mutations in certain genes. If these genes are passed down from parent to child, then the child is likely, but not certain, to get FAD. So while many adults may be concerned about Alzheimer’s because one of their parents had the disease, the NIA notes that the majority of Alzheimer’s cases are late-onset, which has no obvious family pattern. Researchers have not yet determined a way to prevent Alzheimer’s disease.

In the event of a crash, the faulty airbags can explode with sharp metal fragments, causing serious injury or even death to the driver or passengers. The easiest way to check if your vehicle has a defective airbag is to find your vehicle’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN), typically located on the driver’s side dashboard by the windshield and on vehicle registration and insurance documents. Next, visit CheckToProtect.org and enter the VIN. Within seconds, you’ll learn whether the vehicle has an open airbag safety recall. If you do have an open airbag recall, call your dealer immediately to set up a FREE repair. Recall repairs are FREE and will always be done at an authorized dealer, even if you purchased the vehicle somewhere else. Alternative transportation may be available at some dealers. Even after you’ve checked your vehicle, it’s important to set a reminder to check every six months for airbag and other safety recall notices. Recalls are announced by automakers throughout the year, and if you miss a recall announcement—or have lost touch with your original dealer—you could be driving a vehicle with a dangerous safety recall. To help protect your family and friends from these dangerous airbags, encourage everyone you know to Check To Protect today.

HEALTHY COOKING TECHNIQUES Think about baking foods. Baking is handy for more than breads and desserts. Baking is one method of cooking that may not require the addition of fat. Meats that are baked can be placed on top of a rack, so that excess fat drips off and is contained in the bottom of the pan.

Confusion Over Women’s Heart Attack Symptoms ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: My question is about symptoms for women’s heart attacks. I have always heard that symptoms for women can be much different from men’s. Instead of the chest-clutching, sharp pain that men can have, I have read that women’s symptoms can be any of these: heartburn or indigestion; pain in the jaw, neck, shoulders, back, one or both arms; fatigue and troubled sleep; dizziness and nausea; or extreme anxiety. Are you KIDDING me? I am a healthy, active 63-year-old woman. I have had all of these symptoms at one time or another. If I acted every time I had one of these symptoms, I would be at the doctor’s office every day. How is one to know which symptoms to take seriously and act on immediately, and which to wait a few days to see if it is temporary? -- J. ANSWER: I have seen many letters similar to yours. The confusing problem is that it’s true: In women, heart attack symptoms and the symptoms of angina before a heart attack can include all of those vague symptoms. The same is true of men as well, although it’s more likely for women than for men to have symptoms other than the classic left-sided chest discomfort (people are much more likely to describe angina as “discomfort” or “pressure” than “pain”). So your question is entirely valid: How do you know when to take common symptoms seriously? The first thing I would say is that the greater your risk for heart disease, the more seriously you should take any symptom. Age, family history of heart disease, high blood pressure and cholesterol, lack of regular physical exercise and diabetes are among the most important risk factors. The second thing I would say is to take new symptoms seriously. If you never get heartburn, for example, then heartburn at age 63 should prompt concern. Third, context matters. Symptoms such as nausea or jaw pain that occur with exercise -- even carrying a bag of groceries or walking up stairs -- is definitely a reason to talk to your doctor. Most women don’t know that heart disease remains their No. 1 killer, far outstripping breast cancer (or any cancer). Both women and men need to take even vague symptoms seriously, especially if the symptoms are new, exertional or if the person has several risk factors. As a primary-care doctor, I’d rather see my patient for her concerns that symptoms may be heart disease than see her in the ICU with a heart attack. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have diverticulosis. At one time I was told not to eat nuts. I have since read that eating nuts is OK. What is your take? Also, are chia seeds safe? -- E.M. ANSWER: There are two answers to this question. The first comes from clinical research, and a very large trial showed that nut and popcorn consumption tended to protect against diverticulitis and diverticular bleeding. This may be due to the high fiber content, recommended in people with diverticula. So most experts allow their patients with diverticulosis to eat nuts and seeds, including chia seeds. The second is practical experience. If someone has had clinical diverticulitis after eating nuts and seeds, especially if it happens repeatedly, it makes sense not to do so.
*** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2019 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

Older properties tend to have a sense of charm that new ly built homes may lack. Perhaps it’s their lived-in feel or design elements that remind homeow ners of yesteryear that make older homes so popular among home buyers. W hat older homes have in character they may lack in modern amenities. For example, w hereas many homes are now built w ith energy efficiency in mind, older homes may not be so eco-friendly. Fortunately, there are many w ays for homeow ners w ho love their older homes to keep that love going strong w hile making their homes more energy efficient at the same time.

CONSERVE ENERGY AROUND THE OFFICE Allow employees to telecommute. Based on an analysis of data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2005-2014 American Community Survey conducted by GlobalWorkplaceAnalytics.com, a typical business would save $11,000 per person per year if it allowed its employees to work from home just half the time. Those cost-savings can be traced to numerous factors, and lower utility costs in the office as well as the need for less office space are among them.
In today’s competitive job market, individuals need to channel all possible assets to get ahead. Working more efficiently and improving productivity can be an advantage to anyone.

ACHIEVE A BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE Learn to manage your time. One of the keys to creating a worklife balance is to hone your time management skills. Effective time management can help you fit more in without feeling rushed or anxious. Start by determining just how much time you need to perform certain tasks. Then divide up the day accordingly. You may find that by waking up an hour earlier each day, you achieve a lot more without affecting your well-being. Quiet time at home in the morning can be a prime time to fit in a workout or catch up on paperwork.
