CREATE AN ENDURING MEMORIAL FOR A LOVED ONE Create a scholarship fund. What better way to honor a loved one’s memory than to create an avenue to help others in his or her name? Scholarship funds are an ideal way to honor a deceased loved one. Work with the deceased person’s alma mater to establish a scholarship at that school.
Thank You The Family of David Holmes would like to thank everyone very much for the cards, flowers, donations, and kind expressions of sympathy following Dave’s passing. A special thank you to Springwater Fire Department, and surrounding Fire Departments, American Legions, U.S. Army and also Todd Forsythe. Also, thank you to everyone who attended the Spaghetti dinner and to those who donated the baskets for the basket raffle. Although it is impossible to thank everyone individually please know that nothing went unnoticed during this difficult time. ~ The Family of David J Holmes

Wayland’s American Legion Remembers 100 Years in Style By Amanda Dudek almost didn’t happen,” mentioning times the weather prevented fittings, and praising the participating students for the way in which they came through for the show. She said that it all came together an hour before showtime, including the slides and script; however, they put on such a fun, innovative performance, everyone was thoroughly entertained.
Peter “Harmonica Pete” DuPre plays “God Bless America” on his harmonica as the audience looks on.
T
he Theodore R. Van Tassel American Legion Post 402 in Wayland is celebrating 100 years of service with a variety of events all year long. On Sunday, February 17th, the Wayland American Legion Post 402 and the Wayland Ladies Auxiliary hosted the “Proud to be an American” Luncheon and Fashion Show. The event captured 100 years of Post history with civilian and military fashion throughout the years. The show kicked off with guests finding their seats after perusing the many items and baskets being raffled. Guests included the following servicemen of the United States Armed Force: Peter “Harmonica Pete” DuPre (US Army), SSG. Michael Fairbrother (US Army), Sgt. Christopher Flickinger (US Army), CPO Derek Hoffmeister (US Navy, retired), John C. Schuler (US Navy) and CPO Ryan Schuyler (US Navy, retired). Audience ages ranged from the very elderly to toddlers as this was an event for the entire family. Next, guests were ushered up by table to choose their lunch from several options. The Wayland Ladies Auxiliary had prepared a wonderful luncheon of soup (choice of beef and barley or corn chowder), several types of sandwich halves, beverages and dessert squares. As families finished their lunches, the Ladies Auxiliary began telling the story of Post 402, from 1919-2019. After WWI, the Wayland area saw 148 of its veterans return from the war. It was decided that Wayland should have its own American Legion, and the Theodore R. Van Tassel American Legion, Post 402, named for a young, fallen Wayland soldier, was founded in 1919. The Post had 93 original members, meaning that many of the soldiers quickly saw the value in having their own Legion post. On June 30, 1922, the Post held a parade to commemorate the laying of the Post building’s cornerstone, a building which cost the fledgling Legion approximately $50,000. Construction was completed in October 1922. This building is now part of the Legion Community Center and has undergone changes over the years, including the addition of four porches, a battle tank, new siding and paint. Young models from Wayland-Cohocton High School prepared to walk to the front of the stage at the far end of the hall as the fashion show hostess, Rochelle Hoffmeister, described the event as “the show that
The fashion and history part of the show then began and included a hometown serviceman escorting a bride, wearing an original wedding gown and uniform from a footlocker stored at Post 402. The Post’s history continued with a combined presentation of slides and student models dressed in period fashions as well as students wearing all original military uniforms from the area spanning time periods from 1919 to the present. This included a scene honoring the American Legion Baseball team with some original gear. The historic part of the fashion show ended with a moving performance by elderly veteran and honored guest, Peter “Harmonica Pete” Dupre. Harmonica Pete received his 1st harmonica at just 5 years old and taught himself to play it. Peter DuPre and his brothers all served in the military, several of them serving in WWII. Mr. DuPre often used to sooth his fellow soldiers with his music. Now 95 years old, he regaled the audience with a touching rendition of “God Bless America” on his harmonica. The fashion show concluded with formal and wedding fashions modeled for guests. The Dogwood Floral Company of Dansville provided the tuxes. Joan Belanger of Wayland contributed flowers for the show. The formal and bridal wear was provided courtesy of David’s Bridal. Music for the presentation and throughout the event was supplied by DJ Dave Weaver-Live and “In-personated” of Arkport, who was festively dressed as Elvis. Fashion show participants included the following WaylandCohocton High School Girls: Arianna Celetano, Allie Chapman, Michelle Conti, Makaylah Drum, Alexandrea Duclos, Chloe Fox, Cora Fraim, Sophia Holmes, Charlotte Kennedy, Tabea Nothnagle, Lean Perkowski, Sam Smalt, Genny Wilkinson and Grace Willis. It also included the following Wayland-Cohocton High School Boys: Cody Baltz, Jamie Carman, Connor Englert, DeAndre Green, Justin Horton, Cameron Huber, Keeghan Savoir, Owen Snyder, Ethan Trishler, Blake Zastawrny. Junior Models included Grace Bondgren, Hailee Harrison and Brody Gullo, and bridal models included Brittany Button, Katrina Lewis, Brandie Mark, Brittany Needham and Jenna Sick.
The event captured 100 years of post history.
American Legion Post 402, along with other services, sponsors the Vincent House, the local library, DC Camp for Boy Scouts, participates in the placing of the wreaths, supports the Girl Scouts, provides use of its hall for the Red Cross blood drive, the Charter BBQ and air drops Christmas Trees to soldiers in Iceland. American Legion Post 402’s Color Guard is requested all over the country, and it participates in approximately 15 vet funerals every year. With support from the community, its local troops will receive care packages from home, Wounded Warriors will receive funds to help heal the scars of war, and its hometown veterans will receive needed assistance. Have something interesting you’d like to share with our readers? Perhaps an original story, a personal experience, community happening, or school event? MAYOR
Peter Vogt for Dansville: Looking to the Future, Fiscally Disciplined On Tuesday, March 19, Village of Dansville voters will have an opportunity to choose three of five Board of Trustees members: mayor and two trustees. Mayor Vogt is seeking re-election. What follows is a listing of some accomplishments, actions and plans undertaken by him or at his direction: • Halted the rebuilding of the waste water treatment plant until we were able to get the cost down. What had been projected as an $18.7 million project with an annual repayment of $1.1 million was reduced to just under $13 million with an annual payback of $384,400. The final project included nearly all the original proposal. • Upgraded DPW equipment allowing workforce to do more. Has resulted in less leasing and less contracting out of projects. Example: Seward St. culvert bridge cost $200K in house instead of $370K contracted out. • Red Jacket and Austin streets rebuilt and sidewalk replacement program resurrected. • Water and sewer laws professionally rewritten. Also approved solid waste and noise laws.
• Replaced locally produced website with new professional product that is maintained with current information. Also implementing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for accurate mapping of infrastructure.
• Abysmal fiscal situation corrected. Obtained Home Rule legislation to correct expired bond anticipation note (BAN) issues.
• Conducted leak detection survey of water distribution system to reduce treated water being lost and an infiltration and inflow (I&I) study of sewer system to identify sources of clean water being unnecessarily treated.
• Replaced inadequate Unifund accounting program with clerk-treasurer friendly program.
• Conducted preliminary study of Brewery and Bradner creeks for possible challenge of FEMA flood plain data.
• Hired part-time accountant to review books monthly and contracted accounting firm to conduct annual audit.
• Began creek bank reinforcement project to reduce flooding and erosion and possibly reduce insurance rates.
• Secured $6.07 million in grants: Waste Water, Water, Housing, RestoreNY, Microenterprise and DOT. • Established healthy fund balances and reserve funds for the general, water and sewer funds. All equipment, fire trucks and vehicles, plus several projects have been paid for in cash. The only debt service created by my administration was from the waste water treatment plant and water meter replacement projects. • Developed Village strategic plan; currently developing Comptroller recommended capital project plan-budget.
• Replaced more than 50 deficient or non-working fire hydrants. Survey conducted at outset of first term found so many bad hydrants, survey organization stopped counting. Major source of leaking treated water. Willing to make the tough choices! For more, go to Facebook: Peter Vogt for Dansville @ Vote4Vogt.

Questions for Mr. Petti On March 4 during the Dansville Area Chamber of Commerce Board meeting, Mayor Peter Vogt challenged his opponent, Mr. Petti, to a debate. To date, Mr. Petti has not accepted. Remember, Mr. Petti served concurrently as the superintendent of public works and as village administrator for about four years prior to Mayor Vogt’s first term and has a record people should question. Consider the following: • What was the rush to pass a bond resolution for nearly $19 million at 4.5 percent interest just before Mayor Vogt took office? While the state was pressuring the Village to take action, there was no consent order forcing action. Moreover, the new administration took another year before going forward with the project so Board members could look at options to reduce the cost. They were successful. • Why did the Village need to rebuild the plant in the first place? It was obvious the work had to be done, but why had the facility fallen into such disrepair to begin with? Hornell and Geneseo have older plants that are still in operation and have received awards for their maintenance and upgrades. As a licensed operator himself and the superintendent overseeing the plant, shouldn’t Mr. Petti have been on top of maintenance and updates? • Why did the Village not conduct an Infiltration & Inflow study, as recommended by its engineer in 2007, before passing the resolution in 2011? It could have saved money by right-sizing the project. • Why were the water and sewer funds allowed to shrink to the point where there was no cash flow or reserves so that money had to be borrowed from other funds and then the rates raised to ensure fiscal stability? • Why did the Village not go forward with the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) program the Board approved and bought in 2003? Money was spent on equipment, but there is no evidence any work was done. • Why were residents along two streams on the east side of the village told the village couldn’t work on the creeks to prevent flooding and erosion because it was private property? Research (including legal opinions) says otherwise. The prohibition is to prevent public funds from being used for private projects such as swimming pools, brush clearing, etc., not to restrict projects in the public interest. • What was the deal with the Unifund accounting system? It cost the Village $48K, but could never be used by the clerk-treasurer or her deputy because it was too complicated and unnecessary for a small village. • In a campaign pamphlet, Mr. Petti claims he established a credit card payment program and converted “all village documentation to electronic format for search and retrieval to include all village laws, comp plan, employee manual, policy and procedures, etc.”… Really? What happened to it? It wasn’t available in 2011. • Mr. Petti also states he established an employee manual. Again, really? That’s a half truth. It was an online template he copied and failed to alter to fit the Village’s needs. It violates a union contract. • Why wasn’t the Village’s website that Mr. Petti created maintained? It wasn’t developed or kept current. Compare that to the current website that is updated at least monthly and has meeting agendas and minutes; zoning forms and law; a citizens action center; calendars; and much more. • Finally, Mr. Petti claims he is proactive, so why has the Vogt administration spent so much effort these past eight years fixing hydrants, valves, pumps and lines; dealing with extensive I&I and water leakage; straightening out the finances; and more that should have been addressed when the problems arose?

Who Challenged Whom? In the March 8 Penny Saver, my opponent, Mr. Keith Petti, made the statement that he had been trying to set up a debate with me. That is an out and out untruth. He knows where I live, the number for the mayor’s office, that I am in the office every day and have an open-door policy, that I can be reached by email through the Village’s website, and that he could have sent a letter via the U.S. Postal Service. Yet, I received nothing. The truth is just the opposite; I sent him an email on March 2 challenging him to a debate. I have the proof. Further, on March 4, after he spoke to the Dansville Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, I again challenged him in front of a room of some of our community’s most highly regarded civic and business leaders, including a former mayor. His response was that he would get back to me. Wouldn’t you think someone anxious to debate me would have jumped at my offer then and there? In fact, don’t you think it odd that he brought the subject up only after my challenge? I am sorry I have to say this but given this and previous statements made by Mr. Petti, I have to question the truth of what he says/writes. Is he the person we really want governing our village? Mr. Petti also made a statement regarding an expensive out-of-state accounting program, Unifund, that we threw away. Well, he is correct in saying it was expensive: $48,000. Yes, we got rid of it because the village clerktreasurer and her deputy were very frustrated with it. He should have known as he was still the village administrator when I took over as mayor. They complained to me, saying the program was not their choice, that Mr. Petti made the decision despite the fact they were the ones who were responsible for the accounting of the money. I was also told by the clerk-treasurer that only one other municipality in New York used the program. What does that tell you? Why did he recommend the expensive program to the previous administration in the first place when others less expensive and just as capable were available? My administration went with an area company’s program used by many other municipalities, one far simpler to use and less expensive. Yes, it was a waste of money, but who wasted it? Also
concerning finances, people might want to look at the state Comptroller’s audit report for part of the period Mr. Petti was village administrator. They also might want to look at the 2012 water and sewer rates study my administration had done. Both will give you an idea about who is fiscally responsible. As for assuming we had money we did not have, I am not sure what he means, but whatever it is, perhaps it had something to do with the messed up fiscal accounting we inherited. It is strange that he never questioned any of these issues or tried to explain the background to them while he was still working under my administration. Fiscally, I suspect he is wrong, but one thing is for sure, I know we can prove we have every penny we now say we have. One other interesting little fact: when I first became mayor, I gave Mr. Petti a list of 20 items I wanted taken care of right away. All were simple tasks. He only did a couple after I kept on him; the other 18 were finished by his successor or other department heads. Why was that? I leave you with this: a vote for me is a vote for integrity and for this community. I will make a decision that is in the village’s best interest, even if it is not popular. My administration’s record is an open book. I think Mr. Petti’s record as the former superintendent of public works and village administrator says more than enough about him. I also want to leave you to consider the following efforts, either accomplished or currently underway/planned by my administration, to help revitalize the historic district and downtown: worked with Pioneer Park memorial monument committee to upgrade the park; developed the Historic Downtown Walking Tour app; resurrected the Clara Barton Monument committee; currently working with interested persons to establish a Saturday downtown farmer’s market; working with Livingston County to establish a stop on the arts-oriented Inspiration Trails project; looking to establish a coordinator to oversee the downtown planters; developing plans to enhance the gateways to the village; enhancing our parking lots; and providing more security to downtown. We also want to expand the police department up to eight officers.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Workout Supplements Are Sum of Their Parts ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: My son, in his mid-20s, uses a preworkout energy supplement to which I am opposed. Can you tell me if this is harmful so that I can show him scientific research and your educated and medically sound response? The supplement he uses contains alanine 1 g, creatine 1 g, arginine 1 g, tyrosine and velvet bean seed extract. It also contains 150 mg caffeine. -- B.G. ANSWER: It’s not always easy to tell what supplements are safe or effective for the condition they are marketed for, and the information available through a web search often is biased. One place I start to get information is Medline Plus (www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/), which has reliable information about many supplements, but you often have to search individually. In this case, alanine, arginine and tyrosine all are amino acids. These are the building blocks for proteins, and are safe in reasonable amounts. Creatine is generally safe for adults, and has been shown modestly effective at helping improve strength in young male weightlifters. One gram is a fairly low dose and is generally considered safe. The 150 mg of caffeine is about the same as a cup of strong coffee. Velvet bean seed extract I had to look up. It has been used both as a food crop and in traditional medicines. It has toxicity at high doses, but at the dose in the supplement, it should be safe. In summary, I think this supplement is not likely to be harmful if taken in recommended doses, and it might have some small benefit. There is nothing in the supplement that cannot be obtained easily and cheaply from food, apart from the velvet bean, which I think has the least proof of benefit of all the components of the supplement. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 49 years old and in good health. I recently was told by my doctor that what was first diagnosed as a swollen lymph is actually a condition called carotidynia. Can you please publish some information about this condition and what I can expect? Sometimes it is worse than at other times, but it never really goes away. I would not consider it painful; it is just uncomfortable, and when severe, it radiates up into my ear and down into my chest. -- S.W. ANSWER: Carotidynia (literally, “pain in the carotid artery”) can come from several distinct causes, some of which are catastrophic, such as a carotid artery dissection, which is a tearing of the lining of the artery. In some cases, carotidynia may be a form of migraine. After surgery or angioplasty to the carotid artery, one also can get pain that comes from the carotid itself. In the case of no other cause being identified, the condition is sometimes called idiopathic (which simply means “of unknown cause”) carotidynia, and some, but not all, experts think this condition comes from a type of inflammation around the artery, which can sometimes be seen on CT or MRI scan. Idiopathic carotidynia is usually treated with anti-inflammatory medicines -- ibuprofen, or prednisone in more severe cases. Most cases respond quickly, in a few days or up to a few weeks. However, I want to emphasize the need to thoroughly search for other concerning causes of neck pain. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Hydrate Inside and Out. Use a humidifier to keep skin hydrated during the dry months and be sure to lather on moisturizer. Natural moisturizers like coconut oil and shea butter can act as protective barriers against harsh elements, sealing in moisture. In addition to hydrating on the outside, it is just as important to stay hydrated on the inside. By drinking water throughout the day, your skin can stay healthy and moisturized. Avoid Toxins, Specifically Allergens and Irritants. Choose moisturizers and skin care products that don’t contain common irritants, and opt for mild cleansers and moisturizers that are specifically labeled for sensitive skin. Castor oil is another moisturizer alternative that is natural and can be used on both the face and body. Layer Up. Lock in moisture and protect your skin from wind, rain and snow by wearing layers whenever you venture outside. The skin on your neck, face and hands is thinner than other areas of the body and therefore more sensitive to the effects of winter weather. Thermals, scarves and gloves can keep you warm and protect your skin from the cold, dry air.

TIME IS MONEY WHEN IT COMES TO CAR MAINTENANCE (NAPSI)—Whether changing the oil, replacing the wiper blades or checking the tires, finding the time to perform simple preventative vehicle maintenance is money in the bank. According to research conducted by automotive market research firm IMR Inc., one out of three consumers who put off routine vehicle maintenance do so because they cannot find a convenient time. In addition, millennials and those who own older vehicles are more likely to delay routine maintenance. Expert Advice “There is an old adage that if you take care of your car, your car will take care of you,” said Rich White, executive director of the nonprofit Car Care Council. “Making time to perform routine auto care not only ensures a safer, more dependable vehicle, but car owners can preserve the trade-in value and save money by addressing small issues before they become more complicated, expensive repairs.” What You Should Do The most common maintenance procedures to keep a car operating safely and reliably while maintaining its long-term value involve checking the oil, filters and fluids, the belts and hoses, brakes, tires and air-conditioning. An annual tune-up and wheel alignment are also good ideas. Where To Get Help To make it easier for car owners to remember to include auto care in their busy schedules, the Car Care Council offers a free custom service schedule and e-mail reminder service. This simple-to-use online resource can be personalized to help make auto care more convenient and economical. In addition, the council’s popular “Car Care Guide” for motorists is available at no charge, electronically or by printed copy, in English and Spanish. The guide covers major services, component groups within the vehicle, service interval recommendations and much more. The council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers. Learn More: For the latest car care news, visit the council’s online media room at http://media.carcare.org. THE SIMILARITIES BETWEEN PASSOVER AND EASTER To the casual observer, Passover and Easter may not to seem to have much in common. While the two holidays are celebrated by people of different faiths, they share certain similarities. Both Passover and Easter celebrate fundamental tenets of their respective faiths. For Christians, Easter commemorates the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, a moment that has shaped the lives of faithful Christians ever since. During Passover, Jews honor a moment in history that helped free slaves from captivity and shape them into the people of Israel. In addition, historians believe that the Passion of Christ, which is the short final period of Jesus’ life, occurred during the observance of Pesach, or Passover. During this time, Jesus went to Jerusalem in response to a mandate to appear at the Temple. It also is believed that the Last Supper described in all four Gospels was likely a Passover seder. Liberation and rebirth also are at the heart of both holidays.

LEARNING GOLF CAN BE GOOD FOR YOUR CAREER (NAPSI)—Many women, looking to advance in their careers, have found the grass is always greener—on the golf course. As golf remains an important piece of business culture, it is important to empower women to feel confident on the course. Just knowing the basics of the game could encourage participation in key business decisions taking place on the course every day. Why Play Golf Consider these stats and facts from the Professional Golfers Association: • Executives who play golf make 17 percent more than those who don’t. • 54 percent of business professionals see golf as the perfect networking tool. • An estimated 90 percent of Fortune 500 CEOs play golf. • Sandra Day O’Connor, Cameron Diaz, Vera Wang, Celine Dion and Condoleezza Rice are all avid golfers. • Golf challenges women to go beyond their comfort zone for personal enrichment and a feeling of accomplishment and confidence. • Playing golf with someone gives you insights into his or her integrity, sportsmanship and personality. Empowering Women to Learn Golf: Lexus Teams Up With the MGA The best way to learn the game is in a supportive stress-free environment, such as a local clinic. Lexus recently hosted clinics throughout the tristate area with the Metropolitan Golf Association to help women gain the basic skills needed to get on the course. (Keep an eye out next season because they plan to host more in spring 2019.) It is important to look for clinics like the Lexus “Introduction to Golf” events that start simple and focus on basics like putting and chipping. You’ll also want an intimate clinic, so you get the one-on-one attention you need as a beginner. If a local pro will be there to speak to the group, even better! It’s great to gain inspiration from those who live and breathe the game. Golf experts such as former LPGA Tour player Tara Fleming; Liz Caron, a member of the winning 2004 U.S. Curtis Cup Team; and Kyla Basso, a highly talented amateur golfer, were present at the Lexus-hosted clinics. Among their advice: 1. Don’t let yourself be intimidated when you step onto the course with clients or colleagues—you’ll do better if you remain confident and calm. 2. Allow yourself time to become familiar with the sport. 3. Don’t expect to be a pro from day one. With a little practice and hard work, you’ll be reaping the benefits of golf in no time!

Magic Maze ANDYS MUST-HAVES FOR YOUR PADDY’S DAY PARTY When it comes to St. Patrick’s Day, cuisine, hosts should not overlook the importance of providing some staples that people have grown to expect on March 17. Corned beef and cabbage might not be the most authentic Irish meal, but it’s become synonymous with St. Patrick’s Day celebrations and therefore earned its place on your Paddy’s Day menu. Hosts can start the day off right by whipping up a pre-parade traditional Irish breakfast, complete with eggs, Irish bacon, white and black pudding, and brown bread. Hosts need not feel beholden to cuisine exclusive to Ireland or those that have become synonymous with St. Patrick’s Day, but making sure at least one such dish is available is guaranteed to please your guests.

A very special thank you to Erin Greene from Banfield Animal Hospital in the Webster PetSmart. I have known Erin for many years. She goes above and beyond in the We wish to thank all of care of my animals. She those who quickly came to the aid of my husband at loves them like they’re the Canandaigua Walmart her own. I hope Banfield knows how lucky they are recently. He suffered a to have her. reaction to an injection I drove into a lane with 3 vehicles ahead of me, 2 in the process of fueling & 1 waiting to be fueled. When the lead vehicle drove away, someone drove in from the opposite direction and immediately started fueling. As this driver was fueling, another vehicle lined up behind that driver’s vehicle. As a Want to avoid result, when their fueling aggravation, chaos and was complete, no one mayhem? Then don’t could exit the pumps. purchase gasoline from fueling stations which allow This is utterly ridiculous & vehicles to pull up to pumps unsafe! If an emergency from either direction. This system works well provided every vehicle I hate to start the new enters and exits in the year with a complaint same direction. Recently, but...I have brought my To the person complaining about local bottle redemption center. Just keep in mind that that’s what the place is for and that’s what the job consists of, whether it’s 10 bottles or cans or 1000! You were there for the same reason.
All blessings to the person who found my father’s wrist watch outside Canandaigua Wegmans and brought it into the store. It has been professionally cleaned and I am now wearing it with great joy! It is a wonder it was not run over and smashed beyond repair. Thank you, good person! It is simply a good day love and peace to all at the beginning of Lent. It will soon be spring!!!!! On Monday, March 11th, my husband, adult son, and I went to the labs in Brockport to get blood drawn. I don’t know many people who enjoy having blood drawn. I for one, am dog to the same groomer for the last twelve years, and year after year, I have given this groomer gifts for Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, the groomer’s birthday. I handed this groomer a large tip on Christmas week, and I have never even gotten a thank you or well wishes for the holidays, nothing. This groomer is fantastic, but the lack of manners shocks me. Saying thank you is not a hard thing to do! Doggie Bags - You walk your dog at our beautiful county park and even bring a plastic poop bag, like a responsible pet owner, but you leave the purple poop filled bag in the parking area inconsiderately. Next time let the dog poop in
especially a chicken little when someone is going to prick and poke me. I go every six months for a blood work up, and I must say, that STEPHANIE was so sweet to me. She always does a good job at making me feel as comfortable as one can be, under the circumstances. Since going to Brockport labs for my blood work up, I have slowly but surely started to gain confidence that I will not have a problem when doing so (I have bad veins). I owe that to the WONDERFUL people who work at Brockport Labs. THANKS again to STEPHANIE M, TINA D., and last but not least, KIRK W. Job well done! See you ou in six months!!! mont nths nt hs!!! hs

They have disrespected the town’s election results with lock-step politics. Town offices are occupied by people without appropriate credentials or work ethic because the Town Board will not consider more qualified applicants. HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You’ll want to discourage well-meaning but potentially ill-advised interference in what you intend to accomplish. Your work has a better chance to succeed if it reflects you. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The Bovine’s well-deserved reputation for loyalty could be tested if you learn that it might be misplaced. But don’t rely on rumors. Check the stories out before you decided to act. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You’ve been going on adrenaline for a long time, and this unexpected lull in a recent spate of excitement could be just what you need to restore your energy levels. Enjoy it. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Friends can be counted on to help you deal with a perplexing personal situation. But remember to keep your circle of advisers limited only to those you’re sure you can trust. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Securityloving Lions do not appreciate uncertainty in any form. But sometimes changing situations can reveal hidden stresses in time to repair a relationship before it’s too late. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) This is a good time for single Virgos to make a love connection. Be careful not to be too judgmental about your new “prospect” -- at least until you know more about her or him. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your sense of justice helps you resolve a problem that might have been unfairly attributed to the wrong person. Spend the weekend doing some longneglected chores. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You might feel justified in your anger toward someone you suspect betrayed your trust. But it could help if you take the time to check if your suspicions have substance. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Ignore distractions if you hope to accomplish your goal by the deadline you agreed to. Keep the finish line in sight, and you should be able to cross it with time to spare. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your creative self continues to dominate through much of the week. Also, despite a few problems that have cropped up, that recent romantic connection seems to be thriving. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) As curious as you might be, it’s best to avoid trying to learn a colleague’s secret. That sort of knowledge could drag you into a difficult workplace situation at some point down the line. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Instead of spending too much time floundering around wondering if you can meet your deadline, you need to spend more time actually working toward reaching it. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a natural gift for attracting new friends, who are drawn to your unabashed love of what life should be all about. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

Medicare Advantage Plans Offer A Broader Mix Of Benefits (NAPS)—Whether you’re new to Medicare or an established beneficiary, take a close look at Medicare Advantage plans during this year’s open enrollment period. Those policies may offer the best mix of benefits to meet your health needs. Medicare Advantage plans provide Medicare benefits through private health insurance companies. These plans, which currently cover approximately 21 million people, typically include extra benefits and services not available on original Medicare. Medicare.com, a popular non-government health insurance resource, looked at benefits offered by more than 2,500 Medicare Advantage plans available through Medicare.com for 2019. Here are some key benefits available and the percentage of Medicare Advantage plans offering them: • $0 monthly premiums: 45 percent of all plans; • Dental: 88 percent of plans; • Vision exam: 98 percent of plans; • Vision glasses: 84 percent of plans; • Hearing: 90 percent of plans; • Fitness: 99 percent of plans; • Routine transportation: 37 percent of plans; and • Meals: 50 percent of plans. Early in 2018, the government paved the way for Medicare Advantage plans to offer even more benefits, including adult day care services, respite care for caregivers, and in-home assistance with activities such as dressing, bathing and managing medications. Health insurers will also be able to provide safety devices to help prevent injuries in the home, including stair rails, grab bars and temporary mobility ramps. Although most insurers won’t offer the next wave of benefits until 2020, some of the services may be available during this year’s open enrollment period, which runs through December 7, 2018. It’s important to look at costs when shopping for Medicare Advantage plans too. That’s true even if you already have Medicare Advantage, since premiums, deductibles and co-pays change from year to year. Insurance companies often tweak their list of covered drug and prices, too, for Medicare Advantage plans that cover prescription drugs, and that can mean higher out-of-pocket expenses for you. Learn More For further insights, go to www.medicare.com. Many Medicare Advantage plans offer a surprising array of new benefits.

However, it’s a more common decision than many people may know, as the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates the average worker holds 10 different jobs before age 40. People change jobs for a variety of reasons. Some do so because of better opportunities elsewhere, while others simply need a change. Regardless of what’s motivating a job change, leaving a place of employment can elicit various emotions, including some that may contribute to negative thoughts about a current employer. But it’s always best to leave a job gracefully, which can pay dividends down the road.

Mr. Glass
www.yorkcsd.recruitfront.com Application Deadline: March 29, 2019 WHY IT’S WISE TO HIRE VETERANS WITH DISABILITIES (NAPSI)—“Today, nearly 4 million Americans have a service-connected disability. At a time when many employers are struggling to fill positions, hiring veterans with disabilities can boost diversity and inclusion efforts,” explained Jeff Hall, national employment director for DAV (Disabled American Veterans).
Fax Resume to 271-1279 or Email: alex@mrglassfix.com
For example, Dave Ellis found it difficult to get a job after receiving an honorable discharge from the Army. “I had a severe back injury, but I also carried mental scars from active duty,” he said. After six months of searching, he was able to find a supportive company that understands and values the traits that come from military training, including job-ready skills, tested leadership abilities and a mission-focused work ethic.
RN Nurse Manager RN MDS Coordinator
For others, however, it can be a struggle. In fact, a survey in The Journal of Vocational Rehabilitation found that 57 percent of veterans with disabilities transitioning to the civilian workforce feared hiring discrimination due to their disability.
Conesus Lake Nursing Home in Livonia, NY Benefits Offered: 401K, Dental, Life, Medical Employment Type: Full-Time
Why Work Here? “Friendly community oriented nursing home!” We are seeking an RN Nurse Manager and MDS Coordinator (will train) to join our team! These are full-time day positions with an on-call weekend rotation. Qualifications: • Must be an RN in good standing and licensed to work in NYS • Previous experience in skilled nursing care preferred • Previous nursing supervisory or managerial experience preferred • Sign on bonus for new Hurlbut Care Community employees
“The reality is that many of America’s businesses, big and small alike, recognize the importance of hiring veterans with disabilities, but often don’t know where to begin,” added Hall. To address this need, DAV has published “The Veteran Advantage: DAV Guide to Hiring and Retaining Veterans with Disabilities.” This free, comprehensive guide is the result of more than four years of study about what the veteran community contributes to the workforce and how hiring veterans, especially disabled ones, can improve a company’s bottom line. The 36-page publication, which can be downloaded at http://dav.la/jobs, offers best practices and helpful tools for employers. But it goes further, helping to correct misperceptions and inspire more organizations to hire from this talent pool. Content includes statistics about veterans with disabilities, in-depth onboarding and retention strategies, a practical checklist for employers, and explanations of financial incentives, tax credits and other support. The Guide also highlights powerful testimonials of veterans thriving in successful careers, and case studies from employers who benefit from having disabled veterans in their workplace. Nationally respected companies such as First Data and USAA apply the findings within their own internal human resources departments and hiring teams. There are also free and helpful resources that veterans themselves can take advantage of to help with the transition into a civilian career. For example, DAV holds free career fairs throughout the country for veterans and their spouses. Details are available at http://dav.la/jobs.
Send resume to:
lwolinski@Conesuslakenursing.com
“While our nation’s veterans, particularly those who have been injured in service, are faced with unique challenges, they also offer the skill sets, loyalty and dedication needed to help successfully power America’s economy,” said Hall.

BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Make sure you’re getting enough sleep. Failing to get adequate sleep can have an adverse impact on your career. According to the Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School, failure to get enough sleep, even for just one night, can impair a person’s ability to function by affecting his or her ability to focus and access high-level cognitive functions. A panel of experts from sleep, anatomy and physiology, as well as pediatrics, neurology, gerontology and gynecology convened by the National Sleep Foundation in 2015 recommended adults between the ages of 26 and 64 get between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. Make a concerted effort to get more sleep if you’re falling short of those recommended guidelines.
