Updating Your Home’s Electrical System When it com es tim e to update the electrical system , it is alw ays best to w ork w ith licensed and bonded electricians w ho have the expertise to w ork w ith electrical w iring w ithout getting injured. This is not a do-it-yourself type of job since it requires specialized training. Electricians likely w ill recom m end upgrading the electrical panel to bring m ore pow er from the utility poles into the hom e. This can include replacing the existing m eter and circuit breaker box to allow it to handle m ore pow er or replacing item s that are obsolete or dangerous. M any older hom es are only capable of handling a m inim um num ber of am ps, utilizing just a few circuits. But now adays, w hen hom eow ners have far m ore electronics in their hom es than they once did, increased dem and on electricity can overload a circuit. Tripping a circuit breaker is a safety m easure to prevent the w ire from becom ing overheated and causing a fire. How ever, in som e old system s, the circuit breaker w ill not trip, and this can be problem atic. Rew iring a hom e is another step. Wire insulation can deteriorate over tim e, and new w ires m ay be needed. This can be m essy and tim e-consum ing, but it’s a sm all price to pay for safety. When rew iring an electrician also m ay suggest new outlets. M any hom e building codes now require outlets w ith ground fault interruptors, or GFIs, in kitchens, bathroom s and other room s exposed to m oisture. Som e older hom es m ay not even have three-pronged outlets, so this w ill necessitate an update as w ell. Page 7

To the party who left 2 bags of garbage at the end of my driveway on 1/15/19: You left it after the collector stopped at my house. I went through your garbage: Cheesecake factory, McDonald’s, Subway, Marketplace food take out, canned cat food, Powerade bottles, purple colored Friendly’s ice cream, dryer lint. And you left a piece of paper that identifies who you are. If you are having difficulty with the disposal of your garbage, there are resources to help you. Assuming you can just leave your trash at a random house, however, is not the answer. Please ask for help if you are in need. It is all around you, but you have to ask. If you can’t stand the natural odors of farm country - why build, buy or rent a home next to it? GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Makes 4 servings 4 beef tenderloin medallions (each 6 ounces and 3/4-inch thick) 2 tablespoons olive oil Seasoned salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 cup roasted green chile peppers (see below) 1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese 1. Brush steaks thoroughly with olive oil. Season with salt and pepper. 2. Place medallions on preheated grill, close lid and grill, turning once, until an instant-read thermometer registers 145 F for medium rare, 5 to 8 minutes per side. Transfer to a plate, tent with foil and let stand for 10 minutes. 3. Preheat broiler with rack 3 to 4 inches away from heat. Place steaks on individual ovenproof plates. Top each steak with equal amounts of chile and cheese. Broil until cheese melts, about 2 minutes. Serve immediately. To roast chiles: Preheat greased outdoor grill to medium or preheat an oven broiler. Place fresh chiles on outdoor grill or gas stovetop over medium heat or arrange on a baking sheet and place 2 to 3 inches away from heat under broiler. Grill or broil, turning often with tongs, until surfaces of skin are lightly charred and blistered. Immediately place peppers in a paper bag or an airtight container and close tightly. Let peppers cool for 12 to 15 minutes. Peel off charred skin and remove stems and seeds. Tear into strips or chop as needed according to the recipe. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling chiles. Refrigerate peppers for up to 3 days or freeze in airtight container for up to 6 months. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Shaunta Green Supports Cancer Center Patients in Dansville By Amanda Dudek “I would love to make a good 30-40 blankets myself and make and collect 40 hats and scarves,” enthuses Shaunta. The patients in Dansville seem to be looking forward to her handmade comfort items, too. Shaunta has been working with the Volunteer Coordinator at Dansville Hospital’s, Crista Barrows. “She said a lot of people have been talking about my project. A lot of people have come up to me at the hospital to encourage me,” Shaunta shared. Volunteer Coordinator Christa Barrows leads the hospital’s Volunteer Program. Barrows shares that Shaunta has been working hard. “She sets up a table in the Registration Department and makes her blankets, hats, scarves there. When her project is completed, they will be donated to patients in our Cancer Center.”

S
haunta Green, a passionate young woman with a compassionate spirit, saw the need for warm comfort items firsthand. Cancer patients may feel a bit chilly while receiving treatment. According to Shaunta, this is something her late aunt experienced. “When I was little, my aunt had lung, bone and breast cancer,” Shaunta explained. “She used to describe to me how uncomfortable her treatments were.” When the opportunity arose, Shanta decided to do something to help. “I needed to choose a service project for National Honor Society,” said Shaunta. “It had to be something I could dedicate my life to and am passionate about. I want to be an oncologist and help those with cancer.” Shanta described staying home and helping her mom take care of her aunt when her aunt became sick two years ago. “I spent a lot of time helping to take care of her and making sure she received the proper care,” Shaunta said. “Still, last October, she was very sick, and she passed away.” Now, Shaunta is collecting and making blankets, hats, shawls and scarves for patients at the Ann and Carl Myers Cancer Center at Noyes Memorial Hospital in Dansville. “At least this could put a smile on their faces,” Shaunta explained, working hard, not only to gather these items but to make them, as well. “I’m learning to knit and crochet right now so that I can make my own,” said this ambitious teen. The response from her community has been encouraging. “I have received many donations from the community so far,” said Shaunta. She created posters which she hung up around the area and set up two donation bins in Cohocton. “The Cohocton Library bin has been phenomenal,” added Shaunta. “The best success by far.” She has received lots of yarn as well as some hats and scarves. Shaunta receives a lot of loving support and help from her family. “My grandma shares my posts, explaining that I am still working on this great local cause,” Shaunta stated. “My grandma and my great-grandma have been helping me learn how to knit and crochet, too. I have made four lap blankets so far, and one of my other aunts is making hats.,” Thanks to her efforts, her service project is gaining momentum. “People get ahold of me independently to donate,” said Shaunta excitedly. “Many people have been boosting up my project by sharing my posts on their pages and community pages as well as handing out my flyers.” Shaunta explained that people have been very supportive of what she is trying to do and her desire to make a difference. Even so, they still have a long way to go to meet Shaunta’s ambitious goals.

“There are several opportunities for those looking to volunteer,” said Barrows. “We need retired nurses or EMT’s to help run our blood pressure clinics on the first Tuesday of each month at Tops in Dansville and Wegmans in Geneseo and also our blood pressure booth at local summer festivals.” Barrows shared that the hospital currently has volunteers at these sites and are looking for back-up volunteers for when the regulars are not available. “We always need help in our Spice Box gift shop,” she added. The gift shop is a project of the Noyes Auxiliary. The Auxiliary focuses its efforts on fundraising projects to support Noyes Health and benefit the community and supports Noyes equipment needs and capital projects such as the new Emergency Department. “If you are interested in joining the Auxiliary, we have a variety of projects to choose from,” said Barrows.
At least this could put a smile on their faces!
- Shaunta Green
Volunteering opportunities include the Spice Box Gift Shop & Coffee Cart, the Annual Spring Flower Sale, the Dansville 1/4 mile Kids Run, the Welcome Team, the Chip in Fore Noyes Golf Tournament, the Holiday Tree of Lights as well as other fundraising projects. Respite volunteers are always needed to provide companionship to those who are homebound, giving caregivers a break. “Scheduling is very flexible,” added Barrows. For more info about the Noyes Auxiliary or volunteering, contact Christa Barrows: 585-335-4358 or email cbarrows@noyeshealth.org or stop by the Noyes Spice Box Gift Shop to pick up membership application.

FORTIS SCHOOL OF NURSING AT ALL-STATE CAREER SCHOOL LAUNCHES PRACTICAL NURSING PROGRAM Program Meets Underserved Nursing Need in Philadelphia Area (NAPSI)—By 2030, the baby boomer generation, totaling more than 2.1 million in Pennsylvania, will be over 65. Many will require medical care at nonhospital settings such as long-term care facilities and community health centers. Yet, our country’s ability to care for this population will be impacted by the dwindling number of nurses. In response, All-State Career School, a leading postsecondary institution in Essington, has launched a new Practical Nursing (PN) program to provide a pipeline of support to hospitals and other health care facilities in the South Philadelphia metropolitan area. “One of our goals for this new PN program is to increase the number of well-prepared, professional, caring nurses who can be employed in this community,” said Dr. Sheila Burke, Vice President of Nursing for Education Affiliates.
THE HISTORY OF BOUTONNIÈRES Men wear boutonnières on special occasions, including weddings, religious ceremonies and prom night. At weddings, the groom and his groomsmen typically boutonnières. But some historians believe men have not always worn flowers strictly on special occasions. Some believe the modern-day boutonnière traces its lineage to sporting events in ancient civilizations, including Egypt. During those times, men might have worn certain colored flowers as a show of support for particular participants in sporting events, not unlike how many modern sports fans wear team shirts, jerseys and other attire to display their support for their favorite teams. But according to GentlemansGazette.com, the boutonnières of today likely started appearing just a few centuries ago. A 1771 painting of British Captain William Wade by the artist Thomas Gainsborough depicted Wade wearing a bouquet of flowers in his top buttonhole. And in the 19th century, men’s fashion included coats that folded over the top, revealing the inside of the buttonhole. Boutonnières provided an aesthetically appealing way to cover up that buttonhole.
The new Fortis School of Nursing at All-State Career School in Essington is the most recent offering in a network of schools managed by Education Affiliates, Inc., one of the largest nursing education providers in the U.S. The system currently educates over 4,000 nursing students nationwide and operates 29 nursing programs in 10 states. “Southeast Pennsylvania is in dire need of nursing professionals and we’re excited to offer this new program to serve the community,” said Edward Rito, Area Campus President of All-State Career School in Essington. “We look forward to replicating the great success Fortis Institute’s practical nursing programs have experienced at its Scranton campus.” The Fortis School of Nursing at All-State Career School in Essington offers an accredited 60-week practical nursing program. The program was granted initial approval by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing. To learn more about preparing for a career in nursing, contact 610-3621124 for more information.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

Puzzle Answers This Week
Broadening one’s horizons through crafting can be a worthwhile pursuit. Crafting can serve as a relaxing pastime and provide an opportunity to learn rewarding skills. Learning to crochet is one way for men and women to combine creativity and practicality. Crochet is a form of handwork using yarn and a crochet hook. According to the Crochet Guild of America, there’s no way to know just how old the art of crochet is. However, crochet expert Annie Potter has said the modern form of the art originated in the 16th century, primarily in France and England. Others surmise crocheting traces its origins to Arabia before it spread westward through various Mediterranean trade routes.

Four Ways To Remain Mentally Sharp In Retirement
\(NAPS)—Many retirees share a fear of gradually losing their ability to think as clearly as they used to or remember simple information such as other people’s names. And while everyone has the occasional “senior moment,” medical research indicates that aging by itself is generally not a cause of cognitive decline. “Studies have shown that you can help prevent cognitive decline and reduce the risk of dementia with some basic good health habits,” according to Harvard Medical School’s Healthbeat newsletter. Here are four simple steps to keep your mind sharp at any age: 1. Exercise: It’s important to stay physically active. Simple routines such as taking exercise classes at your health club or taking walks in your neighborhood every day can do wonders for your mental health. Just get moving. “The cognitive benefits of exercise have been understood for so long,” notes the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College. 2. Serve: Research published by the American Psychological Association found that volunteering in later life “is associated with significant psychosocial, physical, cognitive and functional benefits for healthy older adults.” Science is now confirming what many have learned by experience: People often feel better after they have served others and enjoyed the time spent helping someone else. 3. Learn: Experts think that ongoing education and learning new things may help keep you mentally sharp simply by getting you in the habit of staying mentally active. Take a class from a senior center or community college, make it a habit to visit the library and pick up a new book each week. “Challenging your brain with mental exercise is believed to activate processes that help maintain individual brain cells and stimulate communication among them,” according to Harvard Medical School. 4. Finances: A study published by The Journals of Gerontology found that “financial strain was a strong and robust predictor of worsening mental health” among older adults, including anxiety and depression symptoms. Another way to help keep yourself mentally healthy in retirement is to make sure you have ample cash on hand to help pay off unexpected health care bills or fund any renovations that might need to be made to your home. Many seniors are surprised to learn that one potential asset for generating immediate cash is a life insurance policy. A life insurance policy is considered your personal property and—as such—you have the right to sell that policy anytime you like. When a consumer sells a policy in a “life settlement” transaction, the policy owner receives a cash payment and the purchaser of the policy assumes all future premium payments—then receives the death benefit upon the death of the insured. Candidates for life settlements are typically aged 70 years or older, with a life insurance policy that has a death benefit of at least $100,000. To learn more about life settlements, visit www.LISA.org or call the LISA office at (888) 672-3917. You can keep your brain sharp and supple, when you put your mind to it

SALOME’S STARS ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Putting yourself in someone else’s shoes isn’t easy for you. But if you do it, you’ll gain a better perspective of what you need to do to achieve your goals. Be open to new ideas. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) There are still some problems you might have to deal with before moving on to your next project. It’s a good idea to accept help from those who share your objectives. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) It’s time to recognize the difference between those who are truly concerned for you and those who simply plan to use your good nature to their advantage. New ideas become increasingly attractive. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Depending on a promise made becoming a promise kept could be more than a mite unwise at this time. It’s best to proceed on your own rather than wait for aid that might never arrive. LEO (July 23 to August 22) A recently revitalized relationship might not be quite what the Big Cat expected. But give yourself more time to deal with the changes. A little flexibility can go a long way. Good luck. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A major change could prompt more adjustments. Some of them might be difficult to deal with at first. But hang in there, and before you know it, you’ll be coasting to your next goal. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your sense of justice prompts you to speak out against an unfair situation, even if you seem to be the only one who feels that way. But you soon learn that many others agree with you. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Creating a fuss is not usually your style. But that doesn’t mean you should tolerate an illmannered attitude. Speak up for yourself, and you’ll earn the respect of others. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You might have a few loose ends to tie up before you can stamp your project as complete. But once that’s done, you might want to celebrate with someone special in your life. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Disappointment darkens the Goat’s mood. But close friends rally to pull you through with words of encouragement. Use their confidence in you to rebuild your own selfesteem. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) An upcoming decision might be more difficult with inaccurate information. Best to recheck the data you have at hand right now to be sure it won’t mislead you later. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) An offer you previously turned down might no longer be available. But if you do some checking around, you could find something else that would suit you just fine. BORN THIS WEEK: You believe in helping those who cannot help themselves. Although it embarrasses you, the fact is, people like you and tell you so.

Delivering The Freedom Of Choice WHAT IS IMMUNOTHERAPY? Immunotherapy is a medical treatment that uses portions of the immune system to fight diseases like cancer. Immune cells and the substances they make travel through the body and protect it from foreign invaders, says the American Cancer Society. Immunotherapy includes a combination of treatments. Some boost the body’s immune system in a very general way. Others help train the immune system to attack cancer cells specifically.

you please discuss the difference between what people call the “stomach flu” and what the flu really is? I have two friends who said they weren’t getting the flu shot anymore because despite having it, they got the flu. They each described several hours of throwing up, but feeling better the next day. I suggested that they probably had a gastrointestinal episode and not influenza, which is a respiratory disease. They insisted that they had the flu, and they’d always learned that the stomach flu is influenza and the flu shot is meant to prevent it. Since then I’ve spoken to two others who believe the same thing. -- G.C. ANSWER: You are right that there is much confusion about what influenza is. Influenza typically begins with sudden onset of fever, headache, fatigue and severe body and muscle aches. Influenza occurs about two days after exposure. There also often are symptoms of cough, sore throat and nasal discharge, just as there are with the common cold, but the sudden onset, fever (commonly 100 to 104 degrees) and muscle aches help distinguish cold from flu. Gastrointestinal symptoms -- such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhea -- are less common in influenza, and these symptoms in absence of the major manifestations listed above makes the diagnosis of flu very unlikely. In late fall through early spring, some diarrheal illnesses (mostly viral) are common, but you are correct that these are NOT influenza. The flu shot contains viral proteins, not live influenza, and it is incapable of causing the flu. Many people will have a sore arm and sometimes mild fever and body aches after a flu shot. This is just part of the body’s reaction, and it goes away by itself within 24 hours. There is a live influenza vaccine given by nasal spray, which also generally has mild side effects. This may be given to adults under 50. The flu shot is not perfect: You still can get the flu after receiving the shot. However, the flu shot is effective at reducing the most serious cases of flu, such as influenza pneumonia, which can be life-threatening or fatal. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a healthy 50-year-old woman, and I recently had my gallbladder removed. What are the effects of not having this organ? -- I.T. ANSWER: The gallbladder stores bile and release it when necessary after a meal. Bile is made by the liver and is needed for proper digestion, especially of fats. After gallbladder removal, usually because of gallstones, the liver takes over the job by storing bile in bile ducts, and releasing it at the right time, under the influence of hormones, such as cholecystokinin. After surgery, most people have no problems with digestion, as their body gets used to the new status quo after a few weeks. Rarely, people who have had their gallbladder removed can develop postcholecystectomy syndrome, which manifests as upper abdominal pain. There are several possible causes. Discovering it requires expert evaluation, usually by the surgeon, and it often involves CT scans and a special kind of MRI (MRCP) to evaluate the biliary tract. Retained stones in the bile ducts, leakage of bile and strictures (narrowings) in the bile ducts are the most common causes of PCS. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. MANAGING HEART FAILURE IS WORTH THE EFFORT

(NAPSI)—The American Heart Association, the world’s leading voluntary health organization dedicated to building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke, shared this month that more heart failure patients and their caregivers report they are putting more effort into managing this complex condition. In 2015, just 55 percent of survey respondents said they were working harder to manage HF. The latest study shows a 14-point increase, with 69 percent now putting effort toward the important daily task of managing heart failure. The AHA conducted its annual survey as part of the Rise Above Heart Failure initiative, nationally supported by Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation, and found that while those diagnosed with heart failure and their caregivers are spending more time and energy managing the disease, they are benefiting. These two groups showed an increased understanding of heart failure since the survey was last conducted. “It’s important to understand heart failure or any condition you have been diagnosed with,” says John Osborne, M.D., cardiologist and American Heart Association volunteer. “It allows you to ask better questions of your healthcare providers and take an active role in your health.” Through Rise Above Heart Failure, people living with heart failure can access free tools to help make the daily task of managing medications, symptoms and doctor’s visits simpler. This includes an app called HF Path, designed to keep all aspects of heart failure management at a patient’s— or caregiver’s—fingertips. Heart failure, which occurs when the heart is not able to efficiently pump blood around the body, can cause symptoms like breathlessness, persistent coughing, swelling and fatigue. “It’s important for heart failure patients to track their symptoms day to day so they can alert their healthcare provider to any warning signs of worsening HF and get prompt treatment,” said Osborne. “World Heart Day serves as a great reminder to us all to make a promise to better understand and advocate for our own health.” Download the app at heart.org/HFPath.
INFLAMMATION Inflammation can affect anyone, and those who have battled it likely have nothing positive to say. But while few people may associate inflammation with something good, inflammation is actually a process by which the body’s white blood cells and the substances those cells produce protect the body from infection at the hands of bacteria, viruses and other foreign organisms. While inflammation is protective by nature, sometimes an inflammatory response is triggered by mistake. When that happens, the body’s immune system, which is designed to protect the body, begins to damage its own tissues. The resulting symptoms of this faulty immune system response may include joint pain, joint stiffness, loss of function in the joints, and swelling of the joints. None of those symptoms are comfortable, and people suffering from them may be on the lookout for ways to alleviate their pain and suffering. While anyone battling persistent inflammation should speak with their physicians to explore their treatment options, a preliminary search of how to best treat inflammation will no doubt turn up information about heat therapy and cold therapy. Successful people need to be sharp, and exercise can help them maintain their mental focus. According to John J. Ratey, Ph.D., a clinical associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, muscles send hormones rushing to the brain where they mix with a substance called brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF. BDNF plays a role in brain cell growth and learning. Without it, brains can’t absorb new information or grow and learn. Exercise also helps relieve stress, which can make resolutions easier to see and make tasks less overwhelming.

WORKING PARENTS CAN CREATE BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE
Anticipated Opening
Look for ways to be more efficient. Interactions with coworkers can make work more enjoyable, but working parents should not spend too much time shooting the breeze with their fellow employees. Doing so wastes time and only contributes to work-related stress. Commuters who don’t drive themselves to work can be more efficient by using their commutes to read emails, arrange meetings or catch up on projects. Doing so allows for more time to get work done while in the office, which can make it easier to go home on time.

Immediate Start BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Maintaining energy throughout the workday can sometimes be difficult. For busy professionals, compromised energy levels can be especially problematic, causing workers to fall behind and maybe even forcing them to work extra hours just to catch up. While infrequent days of low energy should not pose too great a threat, working professionals who routinely find their energy levels sagging by the end of the workday might want to take certain steps to boost their energy and ensure their productivity doesn’t wane.

MAXIMIZE EARNING POTENTIAL WITH VACATION RENTAL PROPERTIES
Genesee Valley
FEEDS
Monday-Friday, 9AM-3PM (no phone calls, please)
(NAPSI)—It is often said that, in real estate, it’s all about “location, location, location.” However, when it comes to rental properties, the key to maximizing their potential is all about “timing, timing, timing.” New vacation home rental industry data shows early fall is the ideal time to buy a property to quickly turn the investment into profit. Here’s why: • In order to plan ahead for spring and summer trips, many travelers book their vacation rental accommodations in January and February, according to a survey of vacation rental owners conducted by vacation rental website VRBO.
S tony B rook S tate P ark SUMMER JOB OPPORTUNITIES Stony Brook State Park is looking for individuals to join our summer work crew. • Meanwhile, Quicken Loans data shows it takes about 155 days to shop for a new vacation home, purchase it, and get the newly acquired property ready. This means a prospective vacation homeowner should shop at least five months before vacation rentals’ busy booking season in January and February to get everything prepared to rent to travelers looking for the comforts of a whole home, whether it’s a beachfront condo or a cozy mountain cabin. “We often see, at this time of year after travelers have wrapped up their summer trips, that they wish they had a vacation home of their own to return to next year,” says Bill Furlong, vice president of HomeAway, Americas. “This schedule may not follow traditional trends of the real estate calendar, but early fall is the right time to buy so preparations can be done by January, when people search for next summer’s vacation rental.” A survey of vacation rental owners who list with HomeAway and VRBO shows that more than half of them say they can cover 75 percent or more of their mortgage payments each year from rental income.ii For those interested in getting into the burgeoning vacation rental business, VRBO’s Earn Tool can help them evaluate how much a specific property can potentially earn through vacation rental income. By visiting www. vrbo.com/earn and entering the vacation home’s address and basic property information, current and aspiring vacation homeowners can get an estimate of annual rental income potential based on comparable properties already successfully renting on VRBO. “The popularity of vacation rentals continues to grow each year,” says Furlong. “An early start and an informed shopping experience with the help of VRBO’s Earn Tool can create a significant financial opportunity for those looking to enter the vacation rental industry.” Page 35
