“Hello, I’m Gary. I was found as a stray five years ago, and given to my owners, knowing they would take good care of me. My owners call me a “gentle giant”, as I weigh 18 pounds. Of course, I enjoy napping, but I also love to snuggle, meet new people, and play with my four brother and sister cats. I look forward to daily screen time with my owners, when I get to watch videos of birds and other outdoor creatures. Some of my other favorite things include empty boxes, human shoes, squirrel watching, and dinner time. Although I share my owners’ time with other furry friends, I will always have a special place in their hearts.” Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

Beer Terms
• Hops: People just beginning to explore craft beer will no doubt hear the word “hops” a lot. Hops refers to the herb added to boiling wort or fermenting beer to impart a bitter aroma or flavor. • IBU: Expressed as a number, sometimes on the bottle or can in which the beer is sold, IBU stands for “International Bitterness Units” and indicates the hop bitterness in the finished beer. The higher the IBU, the more bitter the beer. • ABV: ABV stands for “alcohol by volume” and indicates the amount of alcohol in beer in terms of percentage volume of alcohol per volume of beer. • IPA: IPAs are incredibly popular among craft beer drinkers. An IPA is a style of beer and stands for India pale ale. These beers boast a strong hop bitterness, and many provide a piney, floral flavor. IPAs tend to be high-ABV beers and come in different varieties. American IPAs, Imperial or Double IPAs and English IPAs are popular styles. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

SALOME’S STARS
“Making our community beautiful one smile at a time.”
ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A suggestion from a colleague on how to work out a problem might not sit too well with you. But before you suspect his or her motives, why not just accept it as a friendly gesture? TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) An associate might seek your counsel on a workplace dispute with another co-worker. Listen to what she or he has to say, but withhold advice until you’ve heard the other side of the story. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Use your Twin gifts for creativity and practicality to score points in landing an opportunity that could open doors to a new career. Someone returns after a long absence. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Although things are pretty hectic through much of the week, some quiet time with loved ones helps restore balance. An unexpected visitor brings welcome news about a mutual friend. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Getting used to change isn’t always easy for the Big Cat. But make the adjustments gradually, and soon you’ll hardly remember when things were any different from how they are now. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Continue to stay the course you’ve chosen, and avoid distractions that could throw you off track. Some knowledgeable folks are happy to provide guidance if you need it. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Although you earned plaudits from most coworkers for your recent stand on a workplace situation, you also raised the envy quotient among others. Tread carefully for now. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You feel more positive about that delayed project, and you’re ready to pick it up on a moment’s notice. However, you might need to re-motivate those who have since lost interest. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Some welcome news should be coming your way. In the meantime, use that Sagittarius charm to convince some stillreluctant colleagues that your ideas have merit. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Don’t wait for a misunderstanding to work itself out. Instead, ask for a chance to explain the circumstances before those bruised feelings lead to an irreversible break. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A physical problem should be checked out in order to avoid it going from just being a nuisance to something more serious. Your social life takes an unexpected but not unwelcome turn. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Yours might be the wisest sign in the Zodiac. But you still could benefit from the wisdom of a close friend who has suggestions on how to handle a perplexing personal problem. BORN THIS WEEK: Your passion for doing the right thing inspires others to follow your well-trodden path toward justice.

Persistent Cough Can be Tricky to Treat ---
3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2 (Near the Re/Max building)
Henrietta • 585.359.4987
DEAR DR. ROACH: I went through many tests for a cough
Sue DeBruyne, Au.D.
that lasted for 30 years. No treatments worked. The only sign my doctor could find was that my throat had scars from coughing that long. My allergy specialist had tried for years with all kinds of prescriptions, to no avail. I am now living a normal life since a doctor prescribed tramadol (50 mg) twice a day. What a relief. My wife, grown children, friends and clients are happy. -- L.G. ANSWER: I found only a single case report of tramadol being used for chronic cough, and it was effective in that patient. The authors advised further study on its use. Tramadol is a pain medication distantly related to codeine. Its abuse potential is low, but there have been overdoses and deaths due to this drug, so I don’t recommend its indiscriminate use. However, I have seen personally and received many letters from people with intractable coughing for years, so much so that I wanted to call attention to this as a possible treatment worth discussing with one’s doctor for people with longstanding cough that has resisted diagnosis or treatment. I previously mentioned taking gabapentin for laryngeal neuropathy, a condition that is often unrecognized and that may present with a prolonged cough. I received many letters telling me it was effective. Tramadol at the low dose (for an adult) you mention usually is safe.

A growth plate produces new bone tissue. If the growth plate is injured, it cannot do its job properly. That may contribute to deformed bones, shorter limbs or arthritis. Growth plate injuries most often result from falling or twisting. While there’s no surefire way to prevent growth plate injuries, getting proper and immediate care after an injury can help prevent future problems. An orthopedic surgeon has the expertise to diagnose and treat these injuries.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a very dear relative who had radiation seed therapy for prostate cancer in 2003 after a biopsy revealed a Gleason score of 7 (3/4). Afterward, his PSA was only 0.1 to 0.3 the first three years, and it rose only .3 more each year until 2015, when it was 2.7 recently. He is 83. He has been told he must have hormone treatment: shots, pills or both, by his VA provider, who is not a urologist and who says he should see one. He has no symptoms, he says, and he leads a very active lifestyle, with daily walking of 3 miles or more, bowling twice a week and extensive gardening and yard work. Could the rising PSA be due to normal exercise activity, including production from surviving prostate cells? -- R.A. ANSWER: Rising PSA after cancer treatment typically is due to cancer returning, not an increase in normal prostate. However, that does not mean that your friend “must” have treatment. Goals for cancer treatment in an 83-year-old man may be very different from those of a 20-year-old man. In his case, since it took about 10 years to increase by 10 times, it may be a very long time before the probable cancer would be large enough to bother him, and it requires skill and experience to determine whether treatment, which can make quality of life worse, is worthwhile. Many urologists would recommend deferring treatment until and unless he develops symptoms. I certainly would recommend that he go to see a urologist as his VA provider has recommended. He may be able to learn whether it really is the cancer returning and discuss his options. Shots and pills are options, but so is keeping a careful eye on it and not rushing to treat.

INNOVATIVE SCHOOL IS A TRAINING GROUND FOR ARTISTS (NAPSI)—Art classes have slowly but steadily all but disappeared from public schools over the years. Lack of funding has been the culprit, but educators tend to agree that the arts play a crucial role in the academic and creative development of our children. One public school in Greenville, South Carolina is embracing a different model and provides a haven for young artists from across the state to discover, develop and hone their talents. The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities offers preprofessional training to its students in the areas of creative writing, dance, drama, music, and visual arts. As a public, residential high school serving juniors and seniors, it helps students refine their talents in a master-apprentice community while receiving nationally recognized academic education. The Governor’s School also serves as a resource to all teachers and students in South Carolina, offering comprehensive outreach programs designed to bring together artists, educators, community organizations, and schools. The school is supported by its own foundation—The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities Foundation—by raising revenues to bridge the gap between funds provided to the school through government appropriation and the actual cost of the educational opportunities the school provides to its students. This extraordinary school recently captured the attention of Ovation TV, a cable and digital channel that is dedicated to the arts. Ovation and local cable provider Spectrum acknowledged the school’s contributions to the community and innovative approach to arts education and skills development with a $10,000 award via its Stand for the Arts arts advocacy initiative. SC Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities’ success provides a great lesson for communities across the country looking to support the arts and encourage the creative development of their youth. SPORTS QUIZ
“We are committed to delivering critical services with a caring touch wherever and whenever they’re needed—24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year—for military members and their families at home and around the world,” said Koby Langley, senior vice president for Service to the Armed Forces at the Red Cross. Now, the organization is expanding support for U.S. military personnel in Eastern Europe with a new office in Romania. In addition to aiding military members and their families, the American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to disaster victims; supplies about 40 percent of the nation’s blood; teaches lifesaving skills; and provides humanitarian aid. A not-for-profit organization, it depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public. Learn More: The free Hero Care App helps members of the military and veteran communities access emergency and other Red Cross services anywhere in the world. Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

HOW TO MAKE EXISTING WINDOWS MORE ENERGY EFFICIENT Caulk or add weatherstripping. Small cracks and gaps around windows, which are most often found around windows in older buildings, might not seem like a big deal, but such breaches can lead to considerable energy loss. The DOE recommends using caulk to seal cracks that are less than 1/4-inch wide on the parts of the window that do not move (i.e., frames and where the trim meets the wall). Caulk might be less effective at fixing leaks larger than 1/4 inch in width. Employ weatherstripping to address leaks on movable parts of the window. Properly applied weatherstripping should adequately seal windows when they are closed without making it difficult to open or close them later on. Weatherstripping is available in various materials.

Your Medicare Open Enrollment To-Do List (NAPS) - You may be happy with your current Medicare coverage, but it pays to shop around. Here are a few things to keep in mind. Don’t shy away from shopping. Plan details change each year, so the policy that was best for you in 2018 may not be your best option for 2019. Changes to premiums, deductibles and co-pays can be costly. An analysis of more than 17,000 people using Medicare.com to compare Medicare plans found that just 10 percent were enrolled in the lowest-cost plan for their prescription drug needs. Those who switched to a new drug plan stood to save an average of $611. Watch for changes in drug coverage. Read any letters from your insurance company outlining changes in your prescription drug coverage. Insurance companies often tweak their formulary, or list of covered drugs, each year. That can mean higher out-of-pocket expenses for you. Compare coverage for your prescriptions under any new Medicare plan you consider. Be sure your doctors participate in your plan. Double-check to make sure your preferred doctors will still be part of your health plan’s network next year. You’ll pay more to see non-network providers, and some health insurers won’t cover out-of-network providers at all, except in an emergency. Compare services. MedicareAdvantage plans tend to offer additional benefits you can’t get with Original Medicare. These can include dental, vision, hearing and even fitness benefits.
D id You Know ? Baby Boomers make up the largest generation of Americans born in United States history. Boomers include anyone born betw een the years 1946 and 1964, as the number of births began to rise as World War II veterans returned home from battle. The greatest number of Baby Boomers w ere born in 1957, w hen numbers peaked at 4,300,00. That equates to roughly 8 children born per minute throughout the year. By 2019, the last of the Baby Boomers, or those born in 1964, w ill be eligible for many senior benefits offered to people age 55 and up. Ten years later, most w ill be eligible for retirement.

Shopping for Medicare plans can seem daunting, but there’s a range of services out there to help enrollees navigate them. Read up on your options and don’t hesitate to work through a licensed agent to help match you with the best plan for your needs. DID YOU KNOW? Diamond engagement rings are presented as tokens of love and affection during wedding proposals. The majority of first-time brides will receive a diamond ring, with surveys indicating only 13 percent opt for another gemstone. Researchers from Emory University determined that the average price for a diamond ring is roughly $2,500. However, grooms can spend much more. Diamonds have symbolized eternal love for centuries, perhaps since they were first discovered in India more than 2,000 years ago. The ancient Greeks actually thought diamonds were tears of the gods, while ancient Romans believed diamonds were splinters from heavenly stars.

Dansville’s Carter Davis Receives JDRF Award By Amanda Dudek Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes are so different. “Kids think T1D has to do with their eating,” said Kevin. “It has nothing to do with that.” “I met a kid, a Dansville student, who was diagnosed just two weeks ago,” said Carter. “He had no idea about camp or other available resources, like the pump,” he added, as he displayed the small insulin pump attached to his side. “It was sad because sometimes kids don’t open up about it.” Carter is hoping his willingness to be public about his T1D will encourage others to speak up. “We have tested him and given him his shots in public,” said Cindy. It appears to be working. Cindy described being stopped recently by a stranger who thanked Carter’s Crew for the awareness they are bringing to diabetes.

t only eight-years-old, Carter Davis of Dansville was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes (T1D). “I was diagnosed on October 1st, 2009” said Carter, now a senior at Dansville High School. “My parents started Carter’s Crew then.” Although they raise funds for research, Carter believes the group is about more than that. “We are not 100% fundraising or 100% teaching,” he explained. “We wanted the best of both worlds.” On Friday, March 22nd, 2019, Carter Davis received the JDRF’s V1P award for all he has done. Crew founders Kevin and Cindy Davis said a chance encounter started their relationship with JDRF. “That first year, we saw a pamphlet at Tops Grocery Store about the yearly JDRF walk in Rochester,” recalled Kevin. Cindy agreed, adding, “That first year, we quickly put a team of 37 people together, and we thought that was a lot!” In June 2018, 285 people participated in JDRF’s One Walk, Rochester as a part of the Carter’s Crew team, a state record. Rochester JDRF Executive Director Sarah Goldstein Post was impressed, as well. “Your team is about an 1/8th of the people who show up!” she said. “I took a picture of all your team shirts on your table because it was incredible!” Goldstein Post recognized the heart of the Carter’s Crew team. “You really want to raise awareness, and you’ve been doing that every year,” she said as she turned to Carter. “This kid is amazing!” “Things have really snowballed” Cindy said. “People are already asking for the t-shirts.” Most of the support for Carter’s Crew comes right from the Dansville community. “The community supports us in so many ways,” the Davis family shared, all chiming in. “We hold basket raffles. Bands offer to provide free live music. Donations have even included hot air balloon rides, airplane rides and white-water rafting!” “We have had great community involvement from the very beginning,” observed Kevin. “We have also been very fortunate to work with Dansville Central Schools.” Cindy, too, praised the school nurses for the wonderful way they handled Carter’s health challenges. “My friends at school know all my symptoms, even the weird ones,” Carter added. “They will walk me to the nurse at school or give me juice and snacks if I am at their homes.”
Now, Carter is graduating high school this June. “We want to participate in the JDRF walk this year, especially since it would be our 10th year, but Carter is graduating, and our twin boys are graduating from college,” Kevin explained. Sarah Goldstein Post says the Davis family has already made an incredible impact. “You have done so much to raise awareness and fund research while bringing this community together,” she said. “That is what it is really all about.” As for Carter, he doesn’t plan on slowing down. “I want to go into social work because a lot of kids see this as a disability, and it’s not. It is an ability to find out who you truly are and overthrow who you are not.” To others living with T1D, Carter says, “Don’t be discouraged. Still be yourself. It won’t stop you.”
Don’t be discouraged. Continue being yourself.
Carter’s Crew encourages others to know the symptoms of T1D. - Carter Davis These include increased thirst, frequent urination, dry mouth, itchy or dry skin, increased appetite, unexplained weight loss, yeast infections and can also include drowsiness or lethargy, pain or numbness in extremities, fruity or sweetsmelling breath, nausea or vomiting. The Davis family encourages concerned readers to talk to their doctor about testing. For more information, visit www.jdrf.org/rochester. Carter and his parents recalled a particular soccer incident. “I collapsed on the field,” said Carter. “My team rallied around me, calmly explaining my situation to spectators.” “Two of his classmates went right over and grabbed his bag, bringing him what he needed. They knew just what to do,” Cindy added, her voice soft with gratitude. “I just didn’t want to stop playing,” admitted Carter. “Knowing what to do is so important,” said Sarah Goldstein Post. “The JDRF would like to make sure coaches and other staff are more aware of the needs and symptoms of diabetes.” Kevin and Cindy explained that this can be challenging.

however- due to poor management and nepotism, this previously abundant employer can no longer find work in our field. Not only does this company practice horrible customer service, but they also treat their long time, loyal employees with disdain and disrespect. As a union member I am disgusted and horrified by the lack of appreciation this LLC has shown its employees over the past few years. If anyone is waiting on this company for work in the coming months- be prepared to be disappointed.

According to developmental experts, coloring stimulates creativity, contributes to better handwriting, teaches color recognition, and can promote hand-eye coordination. Coloring books can help children learn to recognize boundaries and structure and develop spacial awareness. Adults, too, have recognized the benefits that coloring can bring, which includes stress reduction and improved focus. Crayons have long been a favorite tool for coloring, and over the years certain colors have emerged as fan favorites. Crayola® conducted polls in 1993 and 2000 to find out the most popular colors of crayons in America. Blue was voted the favorite both times. Six other shades of blue, including cerulean, midnight blue, aquamarine, periwinkle, denim and blizzard blue, finished among the top 10. Purple heart, caribbean green and cerise rounded out the top 10.

According to the Solar Foundation’s National Solar Jobs Census 2016, there were 260,077 solar workers working at 8,601 solar companies in the United States in 2016. The census also found that the five states with the most solar jobs in 2016 were California, Massachusetts, Texas, Nevada, and Florida. Twenty-eight percent of state solar workers in 2016 were females, making women the largest demographic in the solar industry. Latinos and Hispanics (17.2 percent), Asians or Pacific Islanders (9.1 percent), and veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces (9 percent) rounded out the top four demographics employed by the solar industry. Of the 260,077 solar industry jobs in 2016, more than 137,000 were classified as installation jobs that paid a median wage of $26 per hour. With roughly 38,000 jobs in 2016, solar manufacturing was the next biggest employer of workers in the solar industry.

RELIEVE STRESS THROUGHOUT THE DAY Stress affects people from all walks of life, and the causes of stress are as varied as the people it afflicts. In its 2017 Stress in AmericaTM survey, the American Psychological Association found that the three most common sources of stress were the future of the nation (63 percent), money (62 percent) and work (61 percent). According to the National Institute of Mental Health, routine stress that becomes chronic can result in a host of negative side effects. Such stress can suppress the immune system, disrupt digestion and have an adverse effect on sleep. But men and women who feel stressed at the end of each day need not resign themselves to sleepless nights and/or weakened immune systems. A proactive approach to alleviating stress during the day can help men and women reduce their stress levels and avoid the negative side effects associated with chronic stress.

Adults who hope to return to school might be surprised to learn that the educational landscape has changed considerably since they were last in a classroom. College students are no longer just young men and women who begin pursuing degrees right out of high school. In fact, the number of adults returning to the classroom has increased considerably, often making younger students the exception rather than the rule, says the college financial planner Straighter Line. According to the U.S. Department of Education, college students 25 years or older comprise 40 percent of all students enrolled in college. Adults who are thinking about returning to school are urged to fill out the free applications for student aid to see if they qualify. Grants and scholarships may be available, and some workers find that employers may match funds or offer some assistance to finance job training courses. Many schools now offer online courses that make it easier for working adults to pursue their degrees. Many working adults are returning to school to pursue new or advanced degrees, as more colleges and universities are facilitating such pursuits.
