AVOID INJURIES WHEN WORKING OUT A desire to live a healthy, active life compels many people to include exercise in their daily routines. Numerous studies have shown that regular workouts that include a combination of strength training and cardiovascular exercise can make bodies less susceptible to injury while reducing a person’s risk for conditions such as heart disease, stroke and diabetes. Exercising is most effective when it’s part of a daily routine, but that routine can be derailed if men and women are not taking the appropriate measures to avoid injury while working out. While even professional athletes succumb to injury from time to time, there are steps everyone can take to avoid injury when working out.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

In Hydration Game, Coffee Counts ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I drink a lot of coffee, about 80 ounces per day. I feel no ill effects and have no stomach discomfort, but my wife says water is better. A kidney specialist basically said, “fluid is fluid” and that as long as I am hydrated, coffee is fine. With studies showing that coffee has antioxidants and reduces certain cancers, what should I do? -- M.K. ANSWER: People with long memories may recall that in the early 1980s, coffee was linked to an increased risk of pancreatic cancer. However, the study has become a textbook example of poor design, and further studies have suggested that coffee drinking may be associated with lower risk of breast, prostate and oral cancers. I wouldn’t recommend drinking coffee just for this reason, as the effect size, if it really exists, is pretty small. As far as hydration goes, your kidney specialist is completely right. The caffeine in regular coffee is perceived as a diuretic (a substance that makes you urinate excessively), but that turns out to be myth as well, at least in regular coffee drinkers. One potential ill effect of caffeine is that it minimally decreases calcium absorption. However, this amounts to the equivalent of calcium in a tablespoon or two of milk, so it is unlikely to affect overall calcium balance significantly. Eighty ounces of coffee is a lot of caffeine, and some people will get jittery or have sleep disturbances. It also can have variable effects on gut motility (that’s a delicate way of saying that it commonly causes diarrhea, but it also can cause constipation). All that said, if you aren’t having any ill effects from drinking so much coffee, coffee is fine -- though I still think that, as your wife says, water is better for many people.

*** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 64-year-old male. I had a stroke and lost vision in my right eye in 2005. I am right-handed. I had very high blood pressure at the time, and it’s now under control with drugs. Since then, I can no longer wear polarized sunglasses. I have light-sensitive eyes, but most over-the-counter sunglasses are polarized. My ophthalmologist and other eye specialists tell me they’ve never heard of my problem occurring. With polarized glasses on, I see in 3-D. Blue lines in the roadway and sewer lids or any metal covering appear to be 3-D to me. I have to be careful stepping over the handicap space lines because they look like curbs. Have you ever heard of this, or am I unique? If I can locate nonpolarized lenses, then I have no problem. Thank you. -- J.O. ANSWER: While everyone is unique, this is a condition I have heard of before. In fact, I know people who deliberately watch television with one eye in order to enhance the 3-D effects. Polarized light does tend to accentuate lines and edges, so it doesn’t surprise me that with your one working eye you have an accentuated 3-D sensation -- your brain has learned to use cues that people with two working eyes might miss. In your case, the brain has interpreted things so strongly that you are having some optical illusions. Sadly, I don’t have any practical advice beyond finding nonpolarized lenses. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. A Letter From Keith Petti Candidate For Mayor Stop and think about this for a minute: PROPERTY TAXES, WATER AND SEWER RATES, STREET MAINTENANCE, OPEN BOARD MEETINGS, SNOW REMOVAL, BRUSH COLLECTION. These are the things that people care about in this community. How do I know that? I worked for this government right out on the front lines for 34 years. I feel that now it is the time for me to get actively involved on the governing side of our community. Prior to working for Dansville, I worked for the Village of Mount Morris for six years. That is a total of 40 years working for local government in a leadership role. I started my career in local government as a sewage treatment operator and ended it 40 years later as your Village Administrator. Based on this record, I feel that I am the most qualified individual to run for the position of Mayor in Dansville. I have created and managed budgets in excess of five million dollars, directed the village workforce, saved millions of dollars for Dansville and attended thousands of board meetings. One of my priorities is to set up a process that provides a better method for continuity of government. I expect that with my experience, I will be able to hit the ground running, but most new administrations cannot do that. If they make the mistake of eliminating the staff that has been there and knows the operation, then the new staff must go through a rough learning curve to learn how to govern without making expensive and time-consuming mistakes. It is my goal to see local government streamlined, organized and proactive so that we can move into this new century able to compete with other communities that are striving for the same piece of the pie. I have recently learned of one of the many mistakes of the present administration was not knowing how to read NYS Budgetary Accounting and they assumed that they had more money to spend than they did. They also got rid of a very expensive Budgetary Accounting Computer Program - throwing away your important tax dollars. They could have picked up the phone and learned how to run this from previous employees. You don’t run for office with an ax to grind. You run for office to make our community better. I am currently gathering information to try to determine why our water and sewer bills got so high and have been trying to set up a debate with Mayor Vogt for the past few weeks, with no response. Communication is one of the fundamental attributes

of a good local government. It is also one of my top priorities. We need to have an open and transparent government in Dansville. Communication is recognized as a key element in the management of any institution, whether it is a multi-national corporation, a small business, or a local government. Efficient communication is more than a simple transfer of information: it must be bi-directional, and it must be open to exchanges and feedback from the community, it cannot be done with a letter from the editor. In order to survive, the local government must inform every one of its citizens. But if it wants to grow, the local government must also listen to all its citizens and adapt itself in reaction to what it hears. We need to partner not only with the citizens of the community but also with our employees. By being proactive with the local government’s communication, with its community members and employees, and by establishing feedback mechanisms, we can contribute better to the building of a good local democracy. But this endeavor will need the full support of the local leadership. There is no room in local government for a lack of openness and transparency. On March 19th, the Village of Dansville will once again step up to the task of choosing a leader to guide it through the next four years. As a citizen of Dansville, I want what is best for this great community to see us grow and prosper. Most importantly, we need someone who will exhibit leadership and fortitude to rise above nonsense bickering and partisan politics and instead focus on positioning Dansville as a community that leads the surrounding area with honesty, integrity, and openness with a vision for the future that will bring us economic growth. Vote to let me work for you. Call me at 585-7342763 if you ever have a question.

REMODELING

Curled, cracked or missing shingles may prove troublesome. Inclement weather can test the strength of even the most durable roofs. Even though many roofs are designed to last up to 30 years, some may need to be replaced early, particularly when they have been exposed to harsh weather over a period of years. Individual shingles can be replaced as spot treatments, but if the damage is widespread, a new roof may be necessary.

It had fallen out of my bag. I was so VERY GRATEFUL!! It was so encouraging to see the help that she gave, along with the help that Hegedorn’s had given by calling my phone also. I will be sure to respond, in the future, when I see a need.

Last Saturday when I was at Hegedorn’s in Webster, I realized that I had lost my phone. I went to the service desk to see if someone had turned it in. No one had turned it in. I started to retrace my steps in the store, when a very nice lady who overheard the conversation, said that she would call my phone and we could listen for the ring. When we didn’t hear it in the store, she suggested we go check my car. It was there!

It’s refreshing to see and read, and then realize that there’s someone at the “Genesee Valley Penny Saver” who respects and cares about the English language. Whether you call it “copy editing” or “proofreading,” the publication has an expert professional who knows a lot about correct spelling, syntax, and grammar. Easy on the eyes and brain, even though we’re talking about advertising here, your publication presents an errorfree reading experience!

To the Venters sick of line budgers - Those are our “privileged” shoppers, and we deal with their “I’m in a hurry” daily. Some customers are extremely impatient, and when the lines are long, the quiet remarks and huffing and puffing aren’t going to change a thing. They realize that but continue to complain anyway. Also, why customers feel that it’s no big deal to rip open packaging and leave merchandise everywhere is mind boggling. We’re talking adults here. Working retail was difficult this holiday season. Some customers are so miserable that I feel sorry for them. They are wasting a beautiful life being that way, but they shouldn’t take it out on the cashiers.

Many years ago, I bought 2 acres from a farmer who raised cows. We had a very enjoyable 12 years there. We had great neighbors. Yes, we had 2 to 4 days each year that we could smell the natural fertilizer being spread, when the wind was blowing in the right direction. No big deal. 363 days had air quality so pure you can’t find it anywhere in the city. We also had unchlorinated water that contained natural calcium. The worst noise pollution was on the very hot nights when we were trying to sleep. Boy, the crickets can be loud! My advice to anyone buying a house near a farm is to perform due diligence. Think about it. If a couple of days of odor will ruin your life, don’t buy near a farm. For all others, I

Neighbors happen out of our choices! I am grateful to have nice neighbors, but on top, our next-door neighbor is really like our lucky charm. Moving from TX, I bought my very first home, with a 200+yard driveway in beautiful SUMMER, forgetting about WINTER. I was confident I could learn it all despite being female and foreigner and being housetrapped with 2 kids was not in my imagination. Well, either this is the worst winter in a while, or it’s me experiencing the homeowner reality... The 1st snow storm, my John Deere was still in summer mode. The 2nd storm, without chains it could barely move. The 3rd storm, I got snow tires instead. The 4th storm, it finally works! Every time, our driveway is magically cleared because a

lovely neighbor “quietly” sent the elves over!!!

My husband and I go to a local restaurant for a fish fry. Last Friday, February 23rd, we went and the hostess came and asked us for our drink order, but most important is, she took extra time getting ready for work that day. She was dressed in long black pants and a real nice black top, very professional. Kudos, young lady. Stop by and see for yourself at Gunsmoke Restaurant. Diane & Norm Thank you to my wonderful neighbor Bob for keeping my driveway cleared out. It is appreciated.

say, enjoy! If life hadn’t interfered, we would still be in that house and on that land. This is to the person who complained about being wished “a happy holiday”. You need to think before making such a comment. Not everyone celebrates Christmas. Some are Jewish and celebrate Hanukkah; others may celebrate other religious holidays. Bottom line, not everyone celebrates Christmas. So as not to offend those whodon’t and because you may not know what they celebrate, wishing them “Happy Holidays” is very appropriate and considerate. To the person who wrote that wishing others a “Happy

Holiday” is insincere: There are a handful of holidays in December, some that are far older than Christmas. To insist on wishing one and all a “Merry Christmas” is insensitive and disrespectful. It becomes all about you. Wishing others a “Happy Holiday” indicates a generosity of spirit and an enlightened mind. It is an acknowledgment that other’s holidays are just as important to them as Christmas is to you. It is no more and no less valid than any other. Further, treating everyone equally does not indicate an attack on Christmas. Whatever holiday you are celebrating, I wish you a happy and safe one.

MUST-HAVES FOR YOUR PADDY’S DAY PARTY When it comes to St. Patrick’s Day, cuisine, hosts should not overlook the importance of providing some staples that people have grown to expect on March 17. Corned beef and cabbage might not be the most authentic Irish meal, but it’s become synonymous with St. Patrick’s Day celebrations and therefore earned its place on your Paddy’s Day menu. Hosts can start the day off right by whipping up a pre-parade traditional Irish breakfast, complete with eggs, Irish bacon, white and black pudding, and brown bread. Hosts need not feel beholden to cuisine exclusive to Ireland or those that have become synonymous with St. Patrick’s Day, but making sure at least one such dish is available is guaranteed to please your guests.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT GREYHOUNDS Racing greyhounds aren’t predators; many just love to chase things. As The Greyhound Project notes, retired racing greyhounds have been trained to chase lures. That love of the chase may lead some to believe greyhounds are natural predators, but that’s not the case. Many greyhounds just love to run, and some retired racing greyhounds really love to run. However, when they’re no longer racing and have fully adapted to a new home, many greyhounds become disinterested in chasing.

HEMP HAS SIGNIFICANT HEALTH BENEFITS FOR PETS (NAPSI)—NaturVet’s veterinarian-formulated pet supplements have progressed over the last 25 years to keep up with the ever-changing needs of pet parents. NaturVet’s newest Hemp for Health product line includes four top products—Allergy, Calming, Immune and Joint— that are now available enhanced with Hemp Seed Oil and Hemp Seed Powder, sharing the same great original base formulas that pet parents have relied on for years. Although marijuana and hemp come from the same cannabis family, the plants are completely different in function, cultivation and application. Hemp is grown specifically for agricultural purposes and has been used for hundreds of years in textiles, body care products, paper products, industrial products and building materials. Most importantly, hemp is nonpsychoactive and cannot get your pet high. Hemp has significant health benefits for pets. Hemp is high in fiber; a great source of plant-based protein; is rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids; and contains phytonutrients, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and 20 amino acids. Hemp Seed Oil and Hemp Seed Powder work synergistically with other active ingredients to help provide support for allergies, stress and anxiety, joints, aches and discomfort, the immune system, and overall health and wellness. For more information on NaturVet products, please visit www.NaturVet.com or call (888) 628-8783.

DO I NEED BUNION SURGERY? Brett Sachs, DPM, FACFAS • Foot & Ankle Surgeon practicing in Denver, CO • Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons

(NAPSI)—One in five Americans suffers from bunions. A bunion, or hallux valgus, starts out as redness and a bump on the side of the foot near the big toe. Over time, bunions can cause chronic pain and restrict movement. Bunions are progressive and don’t go away on their own, so it’s important for people with bunions to see a foot and ankle surgeon who will evaluate the severity of the deformity and develop a treatment plan. Nonsurgical treatments may reduce the chance of damage to the joint and ease the pain of bunions. However, these treatments will not reverse the deformity itself. If the pain begins interfering with normal daily activities, surgical intervention will typically be the next step. Until recently, the procedure had been very painful and the recovery difficult. However, foot and ankle surgeons have made several advancements in surgical techniques and patients return to normal activities sooner. Recovery typically takes four to six weeks. Foot and ankle surgeons implement pain management techniques following bunion surgery, including using nerve blocks, postsurgical pain pumps, and vitamin C and calcium supplements. These let patients recover fully with minimal pain. For more information or to find a foot and ankle surgeon nearby, visit www. FootHealthFacts.org, the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons’ patient education website. Brett Sachs, DPM, FACFAS is a boardcertified foot and ankle surgeon and Fellow Member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons.

LVCO Senior Nutrition Program Age Healthier With These Five Tips (NAPS)—As your wisdom grows with age, so can the number of pill bottles in your medicine cabinet. For those “young-at-heart” seniors, sticking to healthy habits is the key to aging well. With some simple steps, you can keep a healthy routine that also gives you more time to do the things you love. Joe Koren, pharmacy manager at Walgreens, shares his top five tips for managing your health with a busy schedule: 1. Consult the experts You know to go for regular checkups with your general practitioner, but don’t forget that pharmacists can also be accessible experts to answer questions about your health. In fact, your pharmacist is a licensed professional who provides different health care services including immunizations and can help you understand why and how to take your medications to support effective treatment. Some pharmacies offer extended hours, and 24-hour chat with pharmacy staff is available whenever you need it. Many locations also have health care clinics to treat minor injuries and illness, which can be a convenient and cost-efficient alternative to a doctor’s visit. 2. Let your smartphone help you With a packed list of to-dos, friends to meet and grandchildren to watch, medication routines can easily slip the mind. Luckily, your mobile phone is a helpful tool to keep track of your medications, right in the palm of your hand. For example, the Walgreens app can help you set daily pill reminder notifications, so you never miss a dose. You can also find closeby health care providers and arrange a video call for a face-to-face consultation with a physician or specialist through the app. If using your smartphone comes with its challenges, ask one of the pharmacy staff or a family member to help set it up for you. 3. Simplify your prescription refills Multiple prescriptions can mean multiple trips to the pharmacy each month. A trained pharmacist can recommend convenient refill options such as aligning multiple refill trips to one single date, switching to 90day refills or having eligible prescriptions sent directly to your home. All these services can make it easier to stay on your medication schedule and help save time. 4. Find perks in your Medicare D plan So you’ve signed up for your Medicare Part D plan, but are you using it to save money? Fortunately, many prescription drug plans include Walgreens in their preferred pharmacy network, which could mean a convenient way to lower your co-pays. A little bit of research into the right combination of plan, provider and pharmacy can go a long way to help you save money. Walgreens pharmacies even conduct senior days, giving you extra advice on health care topics and special offers. 5. Maintain a healthy lifestyle They say age is only a number, and when you’re in control of your health, that’s very true! With the time and money you’ll save from these tips, think about how you can embark on and maintain an even healthier lifestyle. Why not challenge yourself to walk for at least 30 minutes a day, connect with friends and family, or take the time to prepare nutritious meals? These five small steps can all contribute to a healthier life, and free up time and head space for the things you really love. For additional information on tools to make medication management more convenient, visit www.walgreens.com/pharmacy. Your pharmacist may have more ways to save you time and money than you realize.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Although you tend to bore easily and leave others to finish what you start, this is one time when you’d be wise to complete things on your own. Then you can move on to something new. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your indecision about a personal situation might come out of those mixed signals you’re getting. Best not to make any commitments until you have a better sense of how things are going. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A dispute appears to be getting out of hand. But you should be able to step in and bring it all under control soon. Be patient. News about a potential career move might be delayed. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Career obligations could interfere with important personal plans. But using a combination of common sense and compromise helps resolve the dilemma to everyone’s satisfaction. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) A stressful situation drains some of your energy reserves. But you soon bounce back in time to finish your tasks and enjoy a well-deserved weekend getaway. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) This is a good time to throw a party for friends and colleagues, and surprise them with your dazzling domestic skills. You also might want to reconsider that career move you put on hold. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A sudden change of mind by someone you relied on could cause a delay in moving ahead with your plans. But those whom you’ve helped out before are prepared to return the favor. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You start the week feeling too shy to speak up in front of others. However, your self-assurance soon takes over, giving you the confidence you need to make yourself heard. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) One way to deal with a pesky personal dilemma this week is to meet it head-on. Insist on an explanation of why the situation reached this point and what can be done to change it. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The creative Capricorn finds several outlets for her or his talents this week. Also note that while a romantic connection looks promising, remember to allow it to develop on its own. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) You stand out this week as the best friend a friend can have. But be careful that you don’t take too many bows, or you might see gratitude replaced with resentment. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) What seems to be an ideal investment should be checked out thoroughly before you snap at the offer and find yourself hooked by an expensive scam. BORN THIS WEEK: Your wisdom is matched by your generosity. You are a person who people know they can rely on. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

Harmony Circle: Serving the Bristol Community for Nearly 100 Years By Amanda Dudek Harmony Circle continues to adopt area families in need, providing for things such as food, rent, clothing, heat, electricity and winter items like hats, gloves, coats and boots. “We think about who is most in need each month,” said Mehlenbacher. “We talk to area school staff such as nurses, social workers and area churches. We do not have to know people’s names, just their needs.”

Harmony Circle ladies pose for the group’s 95th Anniversary

O

ne inspirational ladies’ organization has been selflessly supporting the Bristol area for nearly 100 years. Harmony Circle, established in 1921, is composed of a group of 24 women who meet twice each month, once in December, to discuss ways they can benefit their community. From “adopting” local families to sending children to 4H camp to supporting the Bristol Library to the cards it regularly sends to town residents, the amazing women of Harmony Circle do whatever it takes to meet the needs of those around them. It all started it 1920. Reverend Charles A. Paille became minister of the Congregational Church on Route #64 in Bristol Center and formed the Boy’s Club of the Congregational Church. The girls were not long to be outdone. So, in October 1921, 11 young women met at the Methodist Church in Bristol Center and formed Harmony Circle. Reflecting back, original member Elizabeth Case Morse wrote, “We tried to do so many little things. We sent cards. I have no idea how many thousands of cards, over the years, have been sent to people we knew, people we didn’t know and just for kindness. We have done so many things like that. I know I can’t cover all of them.” One of Harmony Circle’s current Vice Presidents, Lorraine Mehlenbacher, observed that Case’s sentiment is still very true of Harmony Circle today.

Well-known for their pies, Harmony Circle created a Cherry Pie float for the parade.

“We still meet twice a month except December and have 24 members,” said Mehlenbacher. “Candidates still must be unanimously approved before being invited into our group. We still have a president, two vice presidents, a secretary and a treasurer.” Sending cards to Bristol residents is still a big part of what the group does, as well. Cards are sent for illness, sympathy, holidays and other circumstances. “Neighbors, especially those who are shut in their homes, truly appreciate these cards,” explained Mehlenbacher. While its mission remains the same, the group has certainly grown in its reach and endeavors. “We participate in Bristol Fun Day; we have become well-known for our pies.,” said Mehlenbacher. “The Town of Bristol started the Bristol Fun Day parade a few years ago; our group created a float with a huge wooden slice of pie with cherries!” The crowds applauded and shouted as they marched by.

Harmony Circle also regularly supports local food cupboards, Lollipop Farm, the Salvation Army, the American Cancer Society, Hurricane Katrina relief efforts, the Bristol Public Library, Levi Corser Park and others. “Every year, we work with Cornell Cooperative Extension to send children to 4-H camp, some of whom have never gone to camp,” said Mehlenbacher. Harmony Circle also established the Elane Barend Memorial Fund which has provided for the needs of many children as well as providing an entire set of books on foster care and adoption to the Bristol Library. This unique collection is available through the Pioneer System Interlibrary Loan. “We are always trying to find new and different ways to help,” said Mehlenbacher. “We support those in Bristol and the surrounding communities because we like to stay local, but we do reach beyond our borders, too.” Harmony Circle recently assisted the victims of a devastating fire in Bloomfield with a monetary donation, several of whom had lost their homes. They also donated money to the Bristol Volunteer Fire Department to replace equipment damaged in the freezing temperatures that night and said ‘thank you’ to the firefighters with homemade pies and desserts. Harmony Circle raises money through various fundraisers. “We hold silent auctions in the spring and fall,” Mehlenbacher stated. “We’ve sold two cookbooks, held raffles, collected donations from members for a philanthropic project annually; however, our - Lorraine biggest fundraiser is our annual Mehlenbacher, pie sale.” All proceeds go into the group’s treasury to support the Vice President Town of Bristol and surrounding communities. “We want people to know we are here, and we can help,” said Mehlenbacher, a 30+ year member. “This is truly an awesome and talented group of women,” she added. “We cherish our friendships, our sisterhood; it’s an honor and a privilege to be a member of this group. We love not only being Harmony Circle members, but what we have been able to accomplish and contribute to the Town of Bristol, its surrounding communities and organizations and look forward to continuing to do so for many years to come.”

We think about who is most in need.

DID YOU KNOW? Tipping men and women who work in the food service industry is commonplace in the United States and Canada, where citizens typically tip between 15 and 20 percent when dining out at restaurants. But American and Canadian travelers about to depart for overseas destinations may want to familiarize themselves with the practices regarding gratuities before their planes touch down. Some countries automatically add gratuities onto customers’ bills. For example, the government in Dubai mandates that a 10 percent service charge be added to all hotel, restaurant and bar bills. This service charge is then divided by the staff at the establishment, making the charge the equivalent of a tip. Diners in Morocco, where the gratuity is sometimes included in the bill, might be surprised to learn that a 10 percent tip in that country is considered generous. Tips are included in the bill in Costa Rica, where travelers need not feel obligated to leave any additional gratuities. Service is often included in the bill within the United Kingdom as well, though travelers should inspect the bill before assuming gratuity was included. Visitors to Spain should not feel obligated to leave a gratuity larger than 13 percent, and even a tip in the range of 7 percent is considered acceptable.

An inability to maintain that healthy balance can have adverse effects on men and women’s careers as well as the relationships they have with their families. A 2015 survey of more than 2,000 adults commissioned by the workplace solution provider Workfront found that 38 percent of survey participants have missed life events because of a bad work-life balance. Access to technology that means work is never too far away might contribute to poor work-life balance, as 57 percent of respondents also acknowledged feeling that technology has ruined the definition of a family dinner. Finding a healthy balance between work and life at home may require a concerted effort on the part of working parents, but there are ways to successfully juggle a career and family.

Workloads may be hefty on both fronts, and the pursuit of a healthy balance between home and career may seem like an unattainable goal. Stress can build from feelings of being pulled in too many directions. According to Mental Health America, stress can compromise a person’s ability to concentrate, lead to feelings of irritability or depression, negatively affect personal relationships, and weaken immune systems, increasing a person’s susceptibility to a variety of ailments. Research even indicates chronic stress may double a person’s risk of having a heart attack. The desire to have a fulfilling career and a full life at home is a goal shared by millions of people across the globe. But it’s important that one’s pursuit of such goals not come at the expense of personal health. Finding the right balance between work and family requires some maneuvering and practice, but it can be achieved with planning, organization and communication.

RELIEVE STRESS THROUGHOUT THE DAY Stress affects people from all walks of life, and the causes of stress are as varied as the people it afflicts. In its 2017 Stress in AmericaTM survey, the American Psychological Association found that the three most common sources of stress were the future of the nation (63 percent), money (62 percent) and work (61 percent). According to the National Institute of Mental Health, routine stress that becomes chronic can result in a host of negative side effects. Such stress can suppress the immune system, disrupt digestion and have an adverse effect on sleep. But men and women who feel stressed at the end of each day need not resign themselves to sleepless nights and/or weakened immune systems. A proactive approach to alleviating stress during the day can help men and women reduce their stress levels and avoid the negative side effects associated with chronic stress.
