Shopping locally is a great w ay to benefit your community and, in many instances, your bottom line. W hen consumers shop locally, they help stimulate their local economies, creating jobs for their neighbors by helping local businesses grow and thrive. Shopping locally also saves shoppers long trips to the mall that can w aste expensive fuel, especially if consumers don’t find w hat they’re looking for. Shopping locally is especially important w hen the economy is struggling, as smaller businesses are not alw ays as capable of bearing the brunt of a recession as larger ones.

I love exploring the world and strutting my stuff on walks, or as I call them a “flexi”. Mom always lets me bring a special toy on our walks and keeps a watchful eye to make sure I don’t drop it and leave it behind. I also love chasing “the spot” (a laser pointer) around the house, and when I’m finally all tuckered out, cuddling up into Mom and Dad’s arms! Ahh, what a beautiful life! Donny Jr. was a 15-year member of the Wayland Hose Company at the time of his passing in September of 2004. Donny was a founding member of the Wayland Junior Fire Department since its inception in 1991 and became a full-fledged firefighter in 1993. Donny held all line officer positions up to and including Assistant Chief, which was his rank at the time of his passing. Donny was more than a father, son, grandson, brother and nephew to the Spencer and Fredericy families. He was a friend to all he met and with whom he served. He had literally “given the shirt off his back” when needed.

Donny Jr. was a friend to all he met and with whom he served. - The Wayland Hose Company
Donny and Truck 41 were comparable in a couple aspects. They were and are one-of-a-kind, and they serve their community and their neighbors to the highest standards. The entire Wayland Community lost a great person when Donny passed. To dedicate Truck 41, vinyl window decals were placed on the truck, and a wooden plaque presented to the family, as well. Pastors Rob and Cheryl Parker presided over a prayer at the dedication. In attendance, besides the family and Hose Company members, were New York State Trooper Kenny Kline, New York State Trooper Jason Allison, New York State Assemblywoman Marjorie Byrnes, and

he Wayland Hose Company would like to announce the dedication of their newest piece of equipment, Truck 41. On Saturday, March 23rd, The Wayland Hose Company members, Spencer and Fredericy families, and friends of Donny Fredericy Jr., joined together for a posthumous birthday celebration for what would have been Donny Jr.’s 44th birthday on March 24th. In a surprise to most, the day was held not only to celebrate Donny’s birthday but to dedicate Truck 41 in his memory.
The Wayland Hose Company would like to thank all who attended and the community for their continued support of the Wayland Hose Company and for making Truck 41 a possibility and then, a reality. A special thank you to Jason and Amanda Boser of Boser Signs and Designs for the installation of the decals onto Truck 41. They look excellent. On behalf of all Wayland Hose Company Members, thank you.

(NAPSI)—Don’t let window replacement become a “pane” in your wallet. There’s a disconnect between saving money on energy with window replacements, according to government agencies. In fact, they found, it may take decades to recoup the cash spent on the installation of new, energy-efficient windows. The Problem The assessed value of adding 20 new energy-efficient windows in California, for example, may range from $10,220 to $18,580 based on a 2019 building assessors manual listing $511 to $929 for each window. Annual energy savings for the replacement of existing windows in a home are from $27 to $111 for dual-pane windows and $126 to $465 for single-pane windows, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. This means it may take decades to financially justify window replacements based on energy savings alone. An Answer Fortunately, there’s an alternative. Window films offer advanced energy savings and other benefits and can be quickly installed at a fraction of the cost of replacement windows, often with a return on investment in under three years. “Window films professionally installed on structurally soundsingle or double-pane windows may reduce energy consumption by as much as 30 percent, while the installation cost may be 91.5 percent less than putting in new windows,” explained Darrell Smith of the nonprofit International Window Film Association. Easter Sunday
Brunch
April 21st • 11-2 Buffet Style LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY Dining out is a great way to celebrate life’s milestones or simply reconnect with friends and loved ones. Research firm NPD Group found that, by the end of 2015, restaurant visits by consumers increased by 700 million compared to just five years prior. While chain restaurants invest heavily in advertising, independently owned restaurants do not have those same resources. Multi-unit chains also have more pull with suppliers and might be able to negotiate better deals, or can spread operational costs across various locations. Too often diners are not aware of the vast array of tasty, well-priced and artisanal foods awaiting them just down the street. Much can be said about the advantages of patronizing local eateries. Men and women who want unique dining experiences can give local, independently owned establishments a try.

Vegetable oil spray lb. walnut halves & pieces lb. dried figs, stems removed, quartered cup all-purpose flour teaspoon baking powder teaspoon fine sea salt cup sugar large eggs, lightly beaten teaspoon vanilla extract cup diced candied orange peel cup walnut brandy
Preheat the oven to 225 F. Coat the inside of a 9-by-13-inch baking pan with the vegetable oil spray; set aside. Toss the walnuts and figs in a large mixing bowl; set aside. Mix the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar in a medium bowl. Toss 3 tablespoons of the dry ingredients with the nuts and fruit to coat. Adds the eggs and vanilla to the remaining dry ingredients and mix with a wooden spoon to form a smooth batter. Mix in the candied orange peel. Scrape into the nuts and fruit and toss with a rubber spatula until everything is evenly coated. Scrape the batter-coated nuts and fruit into the prepared pan, wet your hands with cold water, and pack the nuts and fruit firmly into the pan. Set in the oven and bake for 8 hours, until the top is golden brown and a skewer inserted into the center comes out clean. (An instantread thermometer inserted in the center of the cake should register 215 to 225 F.) Remove the pan from the oven and spoon the brandy over the top. Cool on a rack for 30 minutes. Run a knife around the edge to loosen, invert onto a rack, remove the pan, turn right-side up, and cool to room temperature. Variation: You can “bake” this in a slow cooker; you will need a 11⁄2-quarter soufflé dish and a 6-quart or larger slow cooker. Once the batter is in the soufflé dish, put it in the slow cooker and cook on low for 6 hours.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You’re doing better on the flexibility issue, but you still need to loosen up a bit to show you can be less judgmental and more understanding about certain sensitive matters. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your personal aspect continues to dominate this week. But try to make time to deal with important career-linked matters as well. A change of plans might occur by the weekend. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Excuses are not really needed for much of the confusion occurring this week. However, explanations from all parties could help in working things out to everyone’s satisfaction. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) That surprising (but pleasant) recent turn of events continues to develop positive aspects. But be prepared for a bit of a jolt on another issue that needs attention. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Creating a fuss might bring you that attention you want. But are you prepared for all the explaining you’d have to do? Better to use more subtle ways to make your bid. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) With education continuing to be a strong factor this week, this could be the time to start learning some new skills that can later be applied to a bid for a potential career move. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You might do well to reconsider some of your current time priorities before you get so deeply involved in one project that you neglect meeting a deadline on another. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) With an important decision looming, you need to be careful about the information you’re getting. Half-truths are essentially useless. Get the full story before you act. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Find out what everyone’s role is expected to be before accepting that workplace proposal. Getting all the facts now could prevent serious problems later on. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A flexible position on a workplace matter could be the best course to follow during the next several days. A personal issue also benefits from an open-minded approach. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Involving too many people in your workplace problem can backfire. Remember: Allegiances can shift. Ask trusted colleagues for advice, but don’t ask them to take sides. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Before submitting your suggestions, take more time to sharpen the points you want to make. The clearer the presentation, the more chance it has to get through when submitted. BORN THIS WEEK: Your clear sense of who you are gives you confidence when you need to tackle difficult situations. LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY Crowd control: Local restaurants tend to be smaller and more intimate than many chain restaurants. This can translate into a calm dining experience. When crowds are small, the noise level inside the restaurant may be muted and service may be fast because there aren’t as many tables to serve. Furthermore, local establishments, although concerned about making a profit, may be less worried about table turnover rate, preferring to let diners linger if it means repeat business.

CROSSWORD
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Medication Doesn’t Stop Vertigo’s Spinning ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a terrible case of vertigo. I’m not sure what causes it or what I can do to prevent it from happening to me again. I was given two medications, promethazine for nausea and meclizine for vertigo, but still the problem persists. Can you offer some kind of help? -- J.G. ANSWER: Vertigo is the sensation of movement when not moving. Although it is classically described as a spinning sensation, some people feel as if they or the world is moving in other ways. There are many causes of vertigo, but we generally break them down into two groups: peripheral causes, from the vestibular nerve, which connects your brain with the organ of balance in the inner ear; and central causes, from the brain itself. Peripheral causes are much more common and generally are labelled “benign,” even though they can be quite severe. Central causes are most commonly attributed to vestibular migraine and poor blood flow to the brainstem. Only a careful exam and, occasionally, more sophisticated tests can reveal the underlying cause of the vertigo. The most common cause is benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, and I suspect that is what you were being treated for, having received a nonspecific treatment for vertigo. Although it is commonplace, I disagree with this treatment if it is used for more than a day or two, and then only in people whose symptoms are severe. Most people get relief from an office treatment called the Epley maneuver. They can continue at home with other exercises. I would suggest that you ask your doctor about these procedures, and if he or she isn’t familiar with them, it might be wise to consult with an expert. In any event, vertigo is a symptom that can arise from several distinct medical conditions. You should find out what your diagnosis is. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: I would like your opinion of taking a vitamin B complex capsule. A friend recommended it, but the dose of one to two capsules a day makes my urine turn bright-yellow. The daily values are from 3,000 to 8,000 percent, and that seems pretty high to me. I don’t enjoy taking it, because it smells and tastes unpleasant, but I’m mostly concerned about getting too much of a “good” thing. -- R.W. ANSWER: Here’s the good news: B vitamins are necessary, and your body is able to get rid of any excess. In fact, the yellow color of your urine is exactly that, your body spilling off the B vitamins you don’t need. There are a few medical conditions that benefit from B vitamins. Here’s the not-so-good news: You almost certainly don’t need so much, and most people don’t benefit from taking vitamins at all. A healthy diet with lots of fruits and vegetables gives you most of the B vitamins your body needs. (Vitamin B-12, by contrast, is found only in animal products, which is why vegans require supplementary B-12.) If you choose to keep taking a vitamin just for general health, I would change to a brand that has lower doses and isn’t unpleasant to take. I don’t recommend stopping megadose multivitamins suddenly. This is particularly important for vitamin C, where symptoms of deficiency can show up temporarily in people who suddenly stop high doses. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Outdoor exercise can benefit both the planet and the people doing the exercising. By exercising outdoors instead of at home or at indoor fitness centers, men and women can reduce their carbon footprints. Exercising in the great outdoors does not require the use of energy-consuming fitness machines. In addition, when exercising outdoors during daylight hours, nature provides all the light men and women will need for their workouts, further reducing the average person’s energy consumption. And it’s not just adults who can benefit from spending more time outdoors. According to the Harvard Medical School, children are likely to get more exercise if they spend time outdoors than they are if they spend time indoors. A study from researchers in England used GPS devices and accelerometers to track the activity of 1,000 children. The children were more than twice as active when they were outside than they were when they were in inside. When children spend ample time outdoors, that, too, can benefit the environment. According to the National Institutes of Health, the average youngster spends three hours per day watching television and gets as much as seven hours of screen time each day. When kids are outdoors, they are less likely to be staring at energy-consuming screens and devices than they are when they’re indoors.

Bascoms has informed us the 2019 bulk price is not out yet but will be out before our syrup buy days., so our customers will get the correct prices for their product. Any buying before that time is based on guesses and last year’s pricing! We are an American family owned and run maple business, not a large corporate entity, and take pride in valuing our customers and their products. We want you all to succeed, and make sure your hard work and passion pays off!! We will be buying any and all quantities of syrup. 5 gal to barrels. Small producers-bring what you have! Price is same to all. We will buy it all!! Call George 302-236-8621 for any info. We appreciate your business and thank you for helping the small business owner help you!

HOW DO WE KNOW LASIK IS SAFE? (NAPSI)—For those thinking about their vision correction options, the question “Is LASIK safe?” is likely top of mind. To answer, ophthalmologist and chair of the Refractive Surgery Clinical Committee for the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, John Vukich, M.D., provides hard data:
SPRING CLEANING PROJECTS YOU DON’T WANT TO FORGET BATHROOM S: Bathrooms also tend to bear the brunt of w inter w eather, as mold and grime can accumulate throughout a season in w hich it’s too cold to open bathroom w indow s to let fresh air in after bathing. Inspect ceilings, tubs, show er stalls, and floors for any signs of mold grow th or grime. M old grow th in a home can lead to respiratory problems and exacerbate existing conditions such as asthma, so it’s best to inspect bathrooms for any signs of mold grow th throughout w inter. If you have let that slip, prioritize such inspections come spring cleaning time.

LASIK has been around for a long time, 20 years, with 19.1 million procedures in the U.S. alone. An enormous amount of research has been conducted: There are more than 7,000 peer-reviewed clinical studies on LASIK performance, safety and outcomes. Based on that science, we know LASIK is very safe and has a less than 1 percent risk of sight-threatening complications. In fact, studies show LASIK is safer than long-term contact lens wear, where the risk of infection is actually pretty high. The patient satisfaction rate with LASIK is more than 96 percent, the highest of any elective medical procedure available today. However, LASIK isn’t for everyone. The only way to know for certain is to have a thorough eye exam with a highly qualified refractive surgeon to find out if you are a good candidate and then decide if it is right for you and your vision.

We lost a set of car keys months ago. We had an app that told us generally where we left our them which was in the parking lot of the Twisted Rail. I was skeptical that we would ever find our keys again and I took a risk that To the person who complained about being wished “a happy holiday”. I read several objections to your comments. One said you should not say Merry Christmas as you may offend someone. Another said you are being insensitive and disrespectful. I applaud you for saying Merry Christmas. For those who wish to change the way we or the large percentage of people living in the U.S. acknowledge the spirit of the season, I say toughen up! someone turned them in. When I finally got around to searching for the keys, I went directly to Twisted Rail based on GPS signals. Not only did they hold on to the keys that were turned in, they waited several months for us to track them down. When I finally went to talk to them, they acted like I was a regular, and just returned the keys and told me they were waiting for me. Even though I’ve never been a customer, I have a great respect to this company for going a little extra to help those in need. Thank you for being

greeting they receive, the color of people’s clothes, lack of manners, etc., etc. I am sure these issues are very important to the people who write them but, in the meantime, our elected officials are acting like toddlers, doing nothing to improve our lives and mismanaging our tax money. I think that we need to get past the everyday annoyances and focus on the big, important things that are going on around us that really need to be changed.
This might sound pathetic but I get some of my entertainment from reading the I gotta vent column. Everything was going great until they changed the pictures by the subtitle. And when I opened the Penny Saver today, guess what I found not only are there no pictures but it is now called “positive vibes only”. And “gotta rant”. Seriously...why?
Local full-service gas station. Great service, speedy friendly workers. Great customer service! Dave’s Ice Cream had just opened for spring. My husband loves their twists. We pulled into the service window and I opened my car door to push the bell. While I was placing our order, my purse fell on the ground, under my car. I had been to the ATM, my driver’s license, SS number, cash, medical

card were in that loaded purse. When I got home, I realized I didn’t have the purse. I sped back to Dave’s, the clerk was trying to find my phone number. A wonderful family turned in my purse (untouched). I was so thankful! I tried to reward the clerk, she would not hear of it. Do not know who the family was either, but hope they get their just rewards. Big thank you to the plow guys, out at all hours, keeping our roads plowed and safe all winter!
and can only do so much. Therefore, I am asking our communities to first please stop using the roadways as a garbage can and second when you clean up your property don’t ignore the trash along the edges and consider going above and beyond and clean up more along the road. Third consider individually or as a group adopting sections of roadways. The environment is the responsibility of all. This problem is almost entirely preventable and it is entirely fixable. Let’s be part of the solution with a little elbow grease.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel
Ten Easy Ways To Get A Dose Of Vitamin N(ature) In Just Ten Minutes (NAPS)—A growing body of scientific evidence proves getting outside (i.e., being an “outsider”) is good for our health and well-being. Exploring and appreciating nature—in our own backyards, community parks and school yards—reduces stress, improves memory, boosts heart health, and offers a host of other benefits for our minds and bodies. “Having a living landscape of grass, trees, shrubs and flowering plants is good. Using this outdoor space to reap the health benefits it offers is even better,” said Kris Kiser, president and CEO of the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI), whose Foundation created TurfMutt, an environmental education and stewardship program that teaches the value and benefits of the outdoors. “Getting outside, even for just 10 minutes, can do much to boost your mood, productivity, and quality of life.” On its 10th anniversary, TurfMutt shares 10 easy ways you can enjoy nature in under 10 minutes. Take a walk. Lace up your athletic shoes and head out for a walk around the block or to your neighborhood park. While you’re out, commit to turning off your cell phone and enjoying the natural setting around you (it’s just 10 minutes, after all!). Get your kids moving. A rousing game of tag or hide-and-seek in the family yard is a great way to counter computer and screen time. Play with your dog. A dog’s favorite “room” of the house is your family yard. Take inspiration from your pooch and spend a few minutes outside playing Frisbee or fetch. Clean up your outdoor living room. Make simple work of yard chores by breaking them up into smaller chunks. Ten minutes is enough time to put a serious dent in weeding a flower bed, sweeping off the back patio, or picking up debris from your lawn. Plant something. It is spring planting season, so take 10 minutes to dig a hole and introduce a new plant or get started on your vegetable garden or flower beds. Dine alfresco. Taking a meal outside is one of the easiest—and most nourishing—ways to enjoy the outdoor space around you. Have breakfast with the backyard birds. Lunch at a park near your office. Enjoy your coffee break under a shade tree. Study or read a book. Take the “work” out of homework by moving study or reading sessions to your backyard or community green space. Swap a (short) commute for walking or biking. Do you typically use your car to run down to the mailbox, to a nearby convenience store, or to run other nearby daily errands? If it’s not too far, take a short walk or ride your bike instead. Meet outside. Fresh air can be a catalyst for fresh ideas, so take your next brainstorming session for work outdoors. Need to have a heart-to-heart with your child? Scientists have discovered that communication between parents and children is more connected when conducted outside. Sit back and relax. Sometimes, the best thing to do is absolutely nothing at all. Spend some time in a hammock, spread a blanket out on the grass, or take a meditation break outside to soak up the nature around you. Learn More For more information on the benefits of our living landscapes and how to be an outsider, visit www.SaveLivingLandscapes.com. For more about the TurfMutt program, go to www.TurfMutt.com.
• On April 15, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln dies from an assassin's bullet. Shot by John Wilkes Booth at Ford's Theater in Washington the night before, Lincoln lived for nine hours before succumbing to the severe head wound he sustained. • On April 19, 1876, a Wichita, Kansas, commission votes not to rehire policeman Wyatt Earp after he beats up a candidate for county sheriff. Earp often worked in law enforcement, but his own allegiance to the rule of law was conditional at best. Wyatt was one of the Earp brothers, who gained fame in the shootout at the O.K. Corral in 1881. • On April 20, 1926, inventor Lee de Forest demonstrates Phonofilm (music recorded on motion picture film) to movie studios, but they were not interested in "talking pictures," believing sound was a novelty.
For all those clamoring for the Hocus Focus, here it is… You’ll find it each week in the Active Living 50+ Section. Enjoy!
Getting outside is good for your mind and body.

INNOVATIVE SCHOOL IS A TRAINING GROUND FOR ARTISTS (NAPSI)—Art classes have slowly but steadily all but disappeared from public schools over the years. Lack of funding has been the culprit, but educators tend to agree that the arts play a crucial role in the academic and creative development of our children. One public school in Greenville, South Carolina is embracing a different model and provides a haven for young artists from across the state to discover, develop and hone their talents. The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities offers preprofessional training to its students in the areas of creative writing, dance, drama, music, and visual arts. As a public, residential high school serving juniors and seniors, it helps students refine their talents in a master-apprentice community while receiving nationally recognized academic education. The Governor’s School also serves as a resource to all teachers and students in South Carolina, offering comprehensive outreach programs designed to bring together artists, educators, community organizations, and schools. The school is supported by its own foundation—The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities Foundation—by raising revenues to bridge the gap between funds provided to the school through government appropriation and the actual cost of the educational opportunities the school provides to its students. This extraordinary school recently captured the attention of Ovation TV, a cable and digital channel that is dedicated to the arts. Ovation and local cable provider Spectrum acknowledged the school’s contributions to the community and innovative approach to arts education and skills development with a $10,000 award via its Stand for the Arts arts advocacy initiative. SC Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities’ success provides a great lesson for communities across the country looking to support the arts and encourage the creative development of their youth.

TACKLING THE ULTIMATE WORKFORCE CHALLENGE (NAPSI)—Today, many people in business talk of diversity fatigue, says Barbara Adams, PsyD, author of “Women, Minorities, & Other Extraordinary People: The New Path for Workforce Diversity” (Greenleaf Book Group Press). But, she adds, that means “we’ve momentarily lost sight of the magnitude of opportunity before us.”
4120 Long Point Rd. Geneseo, NY 14454 585-243-9580 cgenesee@rochester.rr.com
Her book can serve people in leadership positions who recognize, “the tremendous strategic value of having diverse, inclusive workforces,” but have struggled to commit to it.
SPRING CLEANING TIPS TO DETOX YOUR BODY Track your w ater consumption. M ost people don’t pay attention to how much w ater they drink daily. Aim for tw o quarts (that’s 8 8-ounces glasses).
For all the many well-meaning diversity initiatives that organizations have undertaken lately, “personal mindsets and beliefs are what count,” she writes.
Auto Tech
“People in leadership positions,” Dr. Adams adds, “have the ability to replace judgment and bias that naturally occur in us with curiosity about differences.” And that, she concludes, is “truly the beginning of embracing the opportunity that lies in workforce diversity and inclusion” and can make companies and organizations more successful.

Her book reframes the journey ahead through an organizational lens, highlighting the importance of cultural norms, challenging misconceptions, and providing research and practical tools. Send resume to: Pdavin@conesuslakenursinghome.com WORKING PARENTS CAN CREATE BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE Set reasonable goals. Much of the difficulty men and women experience in regard to finding a healthy work-life balance may be a byproduct of working parents spreading themselves too thin. Setting reasonable goals can help avoid that, but doing so requires taking commitments to one’s employer and family into consideration before agreeing to take on new projects or setting deadlines for projects to be completed. This should be applied to both work and home. If a work deadline is unreasonable, professionals should discuss that with their employers, who might change the deadline or arrange for extra persons to work on the project. At home, parents should avoid taking on too many projects, such as chaperoning a child’s dance or coaching a sports team, if doing so will adversely affect the amount of time they get to spend with their families.
