CELEBRATE ENERGY STAR DAY - EVERY DAY

(NAPSI)—Every Fall, the U.S. EnvironmentalProtectionAgency(EPA) celebrates ENERGY STAR Day to raise awarenessaboutthebenefitsof saving energytoday, tomorrow, andforgood.

The typical household spends about $2,000 a year on energy bills. American consumers interested in saving money on their utility bills can look for the blue ENERGY STAR label to identify products—in categories such as electronics, appliances, smart thermostats, and lighting-that have been independently certified to use less energy. According to the EPA, outfitting your home with these products could save you 30 percent—or about$575—onyourhouseholdenergy bills, while avoiding more than 5,500 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions thatcontributetoclimatechange.

Utilities, product manufacturers, and retailers around the country join the celebration and offer special deals that help make energy efficiency accessible and affordable for everyone. In some communities, manufacturers of ENERGYSTARcertifiedlightbulbswork withelectricutilitiestoprovidelow-cost LED bulbs at major discount and DIY retailers. For more information visit www.energystar.gov/SaveForGood. Since 1992, ENERGY STAR and its partners have helped American families and businesses save nearly 4 trillion kilowatt-hours of electricity and achieve over 3 billion metric tons of greenhousegasreductions.

HOW TO ENCOURAGE KIDS TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR TEETH

Parents of young children know that getting kids to brush their teeth can sometimes feel like pulling teeth. Kids have a long history of disliking dental care, which can frustrate parents who know the importance and long-lasting benefits of proper dental hygiene.

While many youngsters may never excitedly run to the bathroom to brush their teeth, parents can try various approaches to get kids to embrace proper dental care.

Start early. Parents should not hesitate to begin cleaning kids’ teeth once the first tooth appears. The earlier dental care is part of a child’s routine, the more likely he or she is to accept it as part of everyday life. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends using a softbristled brush with a small head. Ideally, use a toothbrush designed for infants, brushing teeth once per day at bedtime. The AAPD advises taking kids to visit a pediatric dentist when the first tooth appears, or no later than the child’s first birthday.

Make it a group effort. Young children love to imitate their parents’ actions and behaviors, and moms and dads can use that adoration to their advantage when trying to get kids to brush their teeth. Brush teeth together as a family, making it seem like an enjoyable twice-daily activity. Get down on kids’ level and show them how to brush. If kids are resistant, engage them in conversation while brushing so they don’t even realize they’re cleaning away.

Involve kids in choosing their dental care products. While parents should be mindful of the type of toothbrush their children use, always sticking with products recommended by their child’s pediatric dentist, let youngsters choose their toothbrush and toothpaste. Kids might prefer a particular flavor of toothpaste, and a colorful toothbrush with a favorite film or television character might make kids more enthusiastic and less fussy about brushing.

Compliment kids after positive dental appointments. When pediatric dentist appointments go well, compliment children and express your pride in them for taking dental hygiene as seriously as they do.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I’ve been diagnosed with silent celiac disease at the late age of 62, but I’ve probably had it for decades. (It may have led to my serious osteoporosis.) A biopsy revealed totally flattened villi. I am gluten-free and will be getting celiac-antibody, nutrient and other regular lab work from now on. But my doctors stated that no further scopes are needed unless my blood work reveals a problem, or I get symptoms while on a gluten-free diet. But for asymptomatic people like me, there are no symptoms, and blood work doesn’t show whether the small intestine has physically healed. I tried to ask my doctor this follow-up question but never received an answer.

Should I get a second opinion? I hear from other patients that their doctors did schedule a follow-up scope one to two years after their diagnosis to check their physical healing. For senior patients who can tolerate a scope and have had major villi destruction, is a follow-up scope prudent or unnecessary? -- W.C.S.

ANSWER: Peoplewithunexpectedosteoporosisshouldbeconsidered for celiac disease testing. Celiac disease is a condition of damage to the small intestine due to gliadin sensitivity. Gliadin is a protein that is found in gluten, wheat and other cereals, and it is thought to directly damage the lining of the intestine. This causes flattening of the villi, which is the absorptive surface of the small intestine. The only treatment for celiac disease is strict avoidance of gluten in the diet.

The inability to absorb nutrients can lead to symptoms such as diarrhea and weight loss, but symptoms can also be very subtle. Some people have mild abdominal discomfort after eating, but the symptoms usually disappear once they’re on a gluten-free diet.

People with celiac disease often have low calcium levels, the reasons for which are complex and involve parathyroid hormone and vitamin D, in addition to the direct malabsorption of calcium. I had one colleague with undiagnosed celiac disease who woke up after yet another colonoscopy, and she was unable to move her muscles due to low blood calcium levels. Since the major reservoir of calcium in the body is the bone, calcium is taken from the bone to preserve blood calcium levels, which can lead to severe osteoporosis over the years.

Blood tests can be highly suggestive of a celiac disease diagnosis, but small bowel biopsies remain the definitive way to diagnose celiac disease. Blood tests can turn out negative if a person is on a gluten-free diet, so the blood tests must be done while a person is consuming gluten.

Your question about getting another biopsy after being on a gluten-free diet is debated. However, the consensus of opinion as published by the American Gastroenterological Association is that people like you with severe celiac disease should get another biopsy within 12 months to confirm the original diagnosis and establish that your diet has allowed the intestine to heal.

In your case, carefully monitoring your vitamin D, parathyroid hormone and calcium levels, as well as keeping up with your bone density, will be important ways of confirming whether your treatment was successful. Unfortunately, bone is slow to change, and it will take years to be sure that your osteoporosis is improving through bone density tests.

You can read a lot more about celiac disease at celiac.org.

Are big dogs passe? Smaller, indoor dogs gain popularity

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Why are so many people opting for small, yappy dogs these days instead of big dogs? That seems to be all I see when folks walk their dogs around here. A small dog won’t protect you or your home. -- Bobby T., Oak Ridge, Tennessee

DEAR BOBBY: While it may seem that most dog owners are choosing smaller breeds, the number of small vs. large dogs varies greatly depending on where you live. So you may observe that most of your immediate neighbors have small dogs -- but their popularity is not as universal as you think.

The American Kennel Club, for example, annually lists the most popular dogs by number of registrations per breed. In 2023, the most recent year of published data, the French bulldog was the most popular registered breed in the U.S. However, among the top 10 breeds, only four -- including the French bulldog, Dachshund, Beagle and Bulldog -- could be classified as “small.” The remaining six most popular dogs, including the Rottweiler, Golden Retriever and German Shorthaired Pointer, are all large breeds.

Not all U.S. households that own dogs have registered breeds, of course, The American Veterinary Medical Association in 2024 reported that just under half of U.S. households own dogs, while 32.1% are cat owners. So, while the French bulldog may be the most popular AKC-registered pet, that statistic doesn’t take into account all of the dogs that are being walked through their neighborhoods nationwide. Security-wise, having a dog of any size can be a deterrent for potential intruders (or attackers). Large breeds, often gentle giants, can deter people with bad intentions easily, but smaller breeds should not be underestimated. Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment

Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale.

When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

KITCHEN DESIGN WITH HEALTH AND ERGONOMICS IN MIND

(NAPSI)—Whether you’re among the 50 million Americans over 65 (90 percent of whom hope to continue to age at home), the 60 percent of families with children at home, have other ability issues or safety concerns or think you could someday, incorporating ergonomic elements that promote a seamless experience in the kitchen can make it a more comfortable place for everyone for many years to come.

Smart Sinks Given the amount of time spent in front of the sink, selecting one that considers your lifestyle and how you cook should be a priority. Details such as the durability and hygienic qualities of a sink’s material along with its style and size can impact efficiency and comfort.

For example, the latest sink from BLANCO, a manufacturer of finely crafted sinks, is designed to enhance workflow and accommodate all users. A first of its kind, the IKON® 33” Apron 1 3/4 Bowl with Low Divide sink is made with the brand’s exclusive SILGRANIT granite composite material. Easy to clean and scratch resistant, patented SILGRANIT material is a repellent, nonporous surface that eliminates the need to use harsh chemicals when cleaning.

The IKON sink also has a convenient low divide that sits just 5 1/2” from the sink bottom, making it easier to handle large pots and baking sheets while still dividing the sink into cleaning and prepping bowls. The apron front or farmhouse design, minimizes the need to lean over as much and so helps reduce strain.

Optional accessories further enhance comfort and workflow. A floating grid provides an extra level within the sink so handling hot and heavy pots can be safer and easier. A Floating Cutting Board that fits right on top of the sink instantly creates another workspace beyond the countertop.

Faucets Semi-professional and pull-down faucet models help make clean-up more efficient with their easy-to-maneuver design and powerful dual spray features. To make washing hands, food and dishes easier, consider a faucet with sensor technology such as the BLANCO SOLENTA™ Senso Semi-Professional Kitchen Faucet that lets you turn on the water with a wave of your hand. You don’t have to touch the faucet with your hands to get them clean—or if they’re full.

Other ways to enhance the ergonomics in your kitchen include:

• Use drawers instead of cabinets for storage so there’s less reaching

• Install different countertop heights to accommodate various users

• Raise the height of the dishwasher and oven if you can

• Select nonporous counter materials like quartz that are easy to keep clean

• Use LED lights for more brightness from less energy and that are cool to the touch

• Consider an easy-to-clean induction cooking surface—it can reduce energy costs, too

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT ST. PATRICK’S DAY

While corned beef has become synonymous with St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in the United States, the corned beef eaten in the United States is not the corned beef familiar to people in Ireland. That’s because the corned beef eaten in the U.S. is largely from kosher Jewish butchers, whose corned beef is made from brisket, a tougher cut of meat taken from the front of the animal, whereas the corned beef produced in Ireland comes from the hindquarter.

The March wind sweeps and sings,

I sit beside the hollow fire, And dream familiar things; Old memories wake, faint echoes make

UNIQUE WAYS LOCAL BUSINESSES CAN WORK TOGETHER

Change suppliers. Many partnership opportunities can be effective even if they’re less public in nature. Global supply chains were in flux during the pandemic and have yet to return to normal. That makes now a great time for local businesses to reconsider their suppliers. When doing so, look into local suppliers and let it be known that your products are locally sourced. For example, local restaurant owners can highlight the fact that their foods are sourced from local farms and manufacturers. That may impress foodies with a fondness for freshness, and also should reassure customers who want to keep as many of their dollars in the local community as possible.

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day The Barry Way

it la “health” in Irish

Pronounced “slan-cha,” it translates to “health” in Irish and Scottish Gaelic, and it’s commonly used as a drinking toast. But to Danny and Jessica Barry, it means much more than that. It’s a word that symbolizes community and camaraderie. It’s a greeting, thank you, and “see you later” all in one.

A real-life translation of the word looks something like this: Music breaks out as laughter and cheers of “Sláinte” ring through the air. e room is filled with friendly smiles that make even a stranger feel like you’ve known them forever. It’s an average night at Barry’s Old School Irish in Webster and exactly what the Barrys pictured when they founded the pub thirteen

Barry Beginnings

It all started in 2011 with their honeymoon to the quaint Irish countryside. Among rolling hills and the warm hospitality of traditional Irish pubs, the couple realized they wanted to take a little piece of that magic back home to Rochester. So, they founded Barry’s Old School Irish that same year.

Over the years, the pub became a Rochester staple. Jessica attributes its success to “all the wonderful people that came in the pub and filled the walls with so much love and laughter, creating memories that will last a lifetime.”

A particularly fond pub memory happened one St. Patrick’s Day when a friend of the Barrys brought his horse to the celebration. “Turns out his horse was a big fan of Guinness and had a pint with everyone there,” Jessica recalls.

As the brand grew, so did its founders’ dreams. In 2023, a er over a decade of running the pub, Danny and Jessica decided to close its doors and focus on their liquor company. Despite the pub being closed, the community it fostered is alive and well in new form – the bottle form.

“During the pandemic, you were able to sell alcohol out the door, so we would make fresh Irish cream on the spot as a mixed drink every day for people to take home,” Jessica says, explaining this sparked the idea for Barry’s Irish Cream Liqueur, the first drink in Danny and Jessica’s new venture. Now, the Tipperary, Ireland-made drink is available all over New York State.

is Year, Do St. Patrick’s Day Barry Style

Looking for ways to up your St. Patrick’s Day game? ere are few better folks to show you how than Danny and Jessica Barry and their three children. For the Barry family, St. Patrick’s Day goes beyond wearing green and hunting for four-leaf clovers – it’s a full-day, full-family affair of parade marching, recipe cra ing, and embracing their Irish roots.

“When it comes to the big day itself, we recommend making a whole day of it,” Jessica says. She suggests kicking off your St. Patty’s Day with a cup of Irish tea and Irish cream bundt cake. Lunch calls for a bowl of potato and herb soup, with homemade Irish brown bread and Kerry Gold butter on the side.

For dinner? “Obviously corned beef and cabbage! e best tip we can give when preparing your corned beef is to let it slow cook in Irish beers all day. Potatoes and carrots accompany the dish as well. For dessert, throw some Barry’s Irish Cream in your coffee with homemade whipped cream on top, sprinkled with a bit of nutmeg.”

Another cherished Barry tradition is participating in the annual Rochester St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Every year, the whole family proudly marches through downtown, clad in green from head to toe. Danny and Jessica have attended since they were kids themselves, which makes being recognized as the 2024 Rochester St. Patrick’s Day Parade Business Leaders of the Year even more meaningful to them.

“We got to lead the parade, with our kids right there marching by our side. Smiles on our faces, proudly wearing our business leaders of the year sashes, and shillelagh in hand. What a day – one we’ll hold in our hearts forever!”

“strangers become friends and friends become family. It’s incredible to see the best of the human spirit all tied together with a shamrock bow.”
DANNY AND JESSICA BARRY

Irish All Year Long

For the Barry family, celebrating all things Irish doesn’t stop at St. Patrick’s Day. Fall brings crisp air and crunchy leaves, but it also brings the annual Barry’s Irish Festival. Born from a goal of bringing the community together to celebrate Irish culture, the event is a full-day, family-oriented affair featuring local bagpipers, Irish organizations, Irish dance schools, and musicians like the Gates Keystone Club Police Pipes & Drums – who the Barrys are huge fans of.

“ ey are some of the kindest people in the world,” Jessica says. “Unbelievably talented too. Anytime there is a big Barry’s event, they are there for us.”

For Danny and Jessica, the festival is a cherished opportunity to watch “strangers become friends and friends become family. It’s incredible to see the best of the human spirit all tied together with a shamrock bow.” It’s a day that captures the spirit of the word that’s been there throughout their journey, from a honeymoon in the Irish countryside to launching a company and beyond. Sláinte!

Downsizing Help

Sometimes we just don’t want to face the truth, so we ignore it as long as we can. But eventually it becomes clear: We need to downsize.

Just the word can be painful as we contemplate moving to a smaller place and likely needing to get rid of many of our belongings. And then there are all the details -- what to keep, how to pack, lifting those heavy boxes.

The good news is that we don’t have to do it alone. The National Association of Senior & Specialty Move Managers (www.nasmm.org) can steer you toward move managers in your area, people who are trained in all aspects of moving seniors. In the Find A Move Manager section of their website, put in your ZIP code to find people in your area.

In my town I found three companies. All advertise stress-free moves and help with organizing, downsizing and relocating. It seems they can do it all -- starting with the decluttering that will be necessary for any move to a smaller place. They organize which belongings go to which family members, arrange for the sale of valuables or donations to charity and even take care of trash disposal. And that’s just the first step in the process.

What I like best is that they’ll do the packing. Then on moving day, they’ll be there supervising the movers, dealing with the utility companies to get the power turned on in the new place and, surprise, they’ll even unpack on the other end and haul away the empty boxes.

Moving to a smaller place might not be what we’d like to do, but when it becomes necessary, it’s good to know that we don’t have to do it alone. There are experts who know what to do and when. That should make the whole process much easier.

Hear elt anks

My heartfelt thanks to the kind gentleman who stopped the night of February 3 at the 5 Corners in Albion when he saw my car and I off the road and in trouble. He stayed with me until the wonderful first responders arrived. I’m Very Grateful!!

A glimmer of light

Many thanks to Tim

Several weeks ago, I fell on ice on our driveway while putting out the garbage. Several cars drove by while I lay on the ground. Then a lovely young man in a white truck stopped to check on me. He picked me up, checked that I could walk, and took the tote to the end of the driveway. He was my guardian angel! Thank you!

Thank you to the kind lady who works at my local Walmart in Geneseo for sharing your light. I was shopping for plant supplies and we got to chatting about our love for plants/nature and the upcoming brighter days of the seasons. She even shared with me a photo of a new Enchanted Weeping Willow plant (so cute and fuzzy!) she had found at another store, which brought back a lot of my childhood nostalgia of what my Mom and Grandmother had when I was a young girl. I got one of the last few remaining plants at the other store and it has already brought so much delight to my home and I will enjoy watching it bloom and grow. I ran into her again later in the week when I was picking up groceries and it was so uplifting to connect and let her know that I got that plant and to share that glimmer of light after a long and difficult winter season. Everything happens for a reason and it was so cool for all of that to come full circle. Thank you again and keep shining!

Potholes

The potholes are really bad this year! Seems they’re on every road I drive on through towns and the expressway. I hope these get taken care of. It’s dangerous when people swerve in and out of lanes trying to avoid them.

Have some consideration

Just a kind request for neighbors within the city limits that feel the need to feed EVERY single bird and animal to take into consideration what a mess it makes of your neighbors’ yards, their vehicles, sidewalks & fences when you invite so many birds and varmints to the neighborhood. Make a household favorite more healthy

Many beloved dishes might be enjoyed more often if they were only a little healthier. Author and former personal chef Michelle Dudash was once asked by a client if the she could make a healthier version of chicken parmesan. The result of that request is the following recipe for “Skinny Chicken Parmesan with Spinach,” which Dudash ultimately included in her book, “Clean Eating For Busy Families” (Fair Winds). The recipe was a hit with Dudash’s client and will surely be a hit at home cooks’ dinner tables as well.

King CROSSWORD

Skinny Chicken Parmesan with Spinach

Makes 6 servings

For the sauce:

2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil

2 cloves garlic, sliced

1 28-ounce can whole tomatoes

1/4 teaspoon dried basil

1/4 teaspoon dried oregano

2 pinches salt

2 pinches freshly ground black pepper

1/2 teaspoon honey

For the chicken:

3 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese

2 tablespoons whole-wheat flour

1/2 teaspoon salt, divided

1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

1/4 teaspoon dried basil

11/2 pounds chicken breast, cut into 6 pieces, pounded to 1/4 inch

2 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided

4 cups baby spinach

1 teaspoon lemon juice

3/4 cup fresh mozzarella cheese, sliced into 6 medallions (or shredded)

6 cups cooked whole-grain thin spaghetti tossed in 2 teaspoons olive oil

Preheat oven to 375 F and coat the bottom of a 9 x 13-inch pan with olive oil spray.

To make the sauce: Heat a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add oil and garlic and cook gently for 30 seconds. Do not brown. With your hand, squeeze each tomato into the pan and add basil, oregano, salt, pepper, and honey. Reduce to medium heat and simmer for 20 minutes, lowering the heat as needed.

To make the chicken: Combine parmesan cheese, flour, salt, pepper, and basil in a medium dish and coach chicken with cheese mixture. Place a large skillet over medium heat and add 2 tablespoons of oil. When oil is shimmering, add chicken, rounded-side down, and cook until golden on one side, about 5 minutes. Arrange chicken in a baking pan. Pour remaining 2 teaspoons of oil into skillet and add spinach. Cook spinach for 1 to 2 minutes until wilted and swirl in lemon juice. Gently press spinach to release water and divide spinach on top of chicken. Spoon sauce around and over the chicken, place mozzarella on top, and sprinkle with 1/4 teaspoon salt. Bake for 15 minutes until chicken is cooked through. Serve over spaghetti. This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

There are certain things you must do and should do if you plan to erect a fence. Most people find neighbors appreciate being informed of any decisions you are thinking of making to the property that can affect their views or their adjoining property. Before drawing up fence plans with a contractor, talk to the neighbors on either side of your home and gauge their receptiveness to a fence. At this point, you may want to consider offering to make the fencing project a joint deal to save money should the neighbors decide to install a fence as well. Contractors will often discount if they have several customers doing an installation at the same time. Property owners can save by splitting the costs of the shared walls of the fence where their property lines meet.

OLDER HOME MORE ENERGY EFFICIENT

While new homes are being built to be more energy efficient than ever before, thanks to a growing green building movement and increasingly strict building codes, the age of existing dwellings continues to present challenges. More than 40 percent of the housing stock in the United States was built before 1969 and simply wouldn’t stand up to today’s standards. Yet, much can be done to help homeowners improve their buildingenvelopetoreduceenergy use and increase efficiency.

Improving your home’s energy efficiency can help save money, keep you more comfortable, reduce pollution, and prevent global warming.

COLD WEATHER WILDLIFE IN HOMES BOOSTS DISEASE AND PROPERTY DAMAGE RISKS

Many people may practice the “love thy neighbor” creed, but when it comes to four-legged wildlife such as raccoons, squirrels, and opossum that often seek refuge in yards and homes when outdoor temperatures dip and food sources become scarce, they are best kept at an arm’s length. As community development has thinned natural habitats and forced these critters into residential areas and lessened their fears of people, the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) has found that many areas of the country continue to report increased encounters with nuisance wildlife.

“While it can be a unique experience to spot wildlife in neighborhoods, these animals should be discouraged from taking up residence,” advises Missy Henriksen, vice president of public affairs for the NPMA. “ Not only can they damage property, many are vectors of disease, most notably rabies.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 40,000 people are exposed to rabies each year, a viral infection passed through the bite and saliva of an infected mammal. Raccoons, foxes, skunks, coyotes and bats are the most commonly reported animals infected with rabies. Because of the risks associated with these pests, homeowners should take extra precautions to protect against them.

5 SEASONAL INVADERS AND HOW TO KEEP THEM OUT IN THE COLD

As winter rolls around, few people realize that pest invaders like rodents, cockroaches and nuisance wildlife are just one foundation crack, open utility pipe entry point or brokenbasement window away. The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) reminds homeowners that the potential for pest infestations increases during the cold months of the year as pests seek shelter -- most often in people’shomes.

House mice nest in dark, secluded attics and basements. In addition to carrying diseases and bacteria, causing indoor allergies and asthma attacks, they can also chew through drywall and wires, increasing the riskofelectricalfires.

Keep house mice from entering the housebysealingoutsidecracksand holes. It’s also important to keep basements and attics dry and clutter freetopreventnestingspots. Norway rats nest in basements, pilesofdebrisandother undisturbed materials. They can gnaw through almost anything to obtain food and water.Like house mice,Norwayrats also carry diseases and pose a risk ofhousefires.

Fill any gaps or cracks on the outside of the home, and eliminate sources of moisture in crawl spacesandbasements.

Raccoons often climb through chimneys or attics in search of a denning site, posing danger to humans. Not only can raccoons attack if they feel threatened while trapped indoors, but they are also a major host of rabiesintheU.S.

Torepelraccoons, storewastecans in sealed areas, or use an animalproof lid. Check the outside of your homefor accesspoints, repair loose siding or shingles, and use a mesh cover or capfor your chimney.

German cockroaches live in small areas close to food and moisture. Theycansneakilyenter thehomein bags and boxes, and can contaminate food sources and spreadbacteria.

To defend against cockroaches, keep counters and floors clean. Vacuum frequently, and dispose of garbage regularly, paying specific attention under appliances and sinks.

WAYS ESTABLISHED PROFESSIONALS CAN IMPROVE THEIR RÉSUMÉS

Rather than focusing on job responsibilities at each job you held, gear the résumé around what you achieved in each position. This will help identify how you performed in the position, instead of just a general retelling of what you did. It can be challenging to achieve this for jobs that don’t naturally lend themselves to numerically quantitative results (i.e., increased department sales by 15 percent), but it’s still possible to use a résumé to illustrate your achievements.

Ratherthanstatethatyouwereresponsibleforprovidingcustomerservice, explain that you built your reputation on conveying difficult technical terms to the layperson, serving as the go-to employee for translating job jargon for outside correspondence.

If you have quantitative proof of how you accomplished something, certainly add it. This can include measures of profit growth, reduction of debt or increase in customer base.
