Data breaches and ďŹnancial scams against seniors are at all-time highs. What was bad before is apparently even worse now.
Why do scammers target seniors? Here are the top reasons:
- They perceive that we have a lot of money. After all, we worked all those years ... we saved a lot of cash, they assume. And now we have huge pension and Social Security income that surely puts us in a high income bracket, they assume.
- Many of us grew up in an era when we were polite to people on the phone. Scammers take advantage of that and coax us into divulging private information.
- Many of us arenât especially skilled with technology. We press buttons on our phone that we shouldnât, or click links in strange email, not realizing that weâve just enabled the download of a virus or made a connection to the scammers.
Here are a few suggestions for staying safe in the war with the scammers: Order your credit report from TransUnion, Equifax and Experian and go over them line by line. Be sure there isnât anything you donât recognize, that no extra loans show up and no additional names are listed. To do this, go online to annualcreditreport.com and order your free credit reports. If you spot something wrong, report it at IdentityTheft.gov or call the National Elder Fraud Hotline at 833-372-8311.
Lock down your credit at all three credit bureaus. This will keep anyone from opening credit in your name.
To learn safety on your electronic devices, ask your senior center, library or even your bank for a class on how to avoid falling for an online scam. And perhaps most valuable of all: Donât feel the need to be polite if a stranger calls you on the phone and starts asking questions. Just hang up. Better yet, donât answer if you donât recognize the number.

Driving is a multisensory experience that requires careful coordination and mastery of a wide array of skills. Understanding the rules of the road and having sufficient practice are only part of the equation. Being able to see the road and react to obstacles, signage and more is crucial. Drivers should not downplay the importance of visual acuity when they turn their ignition keys.
Acceptable vision is involved in all components of driving. Motor vehicle operators need to have clear vision to read gauges and operate the controls of the car. Distance vision also is essential to identifying road hazards and seeing other cars on the road. The health resource All About Vision says aging and visual changes at any age can affect a personâs ability to see moving objects while one is in motion - as is the case while driving a car or truck. In addition, changes in peripheral vision can increase blind spots while driving and affect reaction time. Many motor vehicle agency vision tests do not take into consideration all of the factors that can impact vision while driving. Seeking care for visual problems and changing driving habits when necessary can help people stay safe on the road.
TECH TO TAKE ALONG ON YOUR NEXT ROAD TRIP Road trips hold a special place in many peopleâs hearts. The open road and the freedoms it represents have been romanticized by writers and travelers since automobiles became accessible to the masses. While many drivers still take to the road looking for adventure, road trips have changed considerably since Jack Kerouac penned his seminal novel âOn the Roadâ in the 1950s. The spirit of the open road is still there, but the way travelers approach road trips has changed considerably, most notably with regard to the technology that motorists now take along for the ride. Drivers about to embark on a road trip, whether itâs their ďŹrst such venture or their ďŹftieth, can make trips even more enjoyable by taking along the right tech.

Parents of young children know that getting kids to brush their teeth can sometimes feel like pulling teeth. Kids have a long history of disliking dental care, which can frustrate parents who know the importance and long-lasting beneďŹts of proper dental hygiene.
While many youngsters may never excitedly run to the bathroom to brush their teeth, parents can try various approaches to get kids to embrace proper dental care.
Start early. Parents should not hesitate to begin cleaning kidsâ teeth once the ďŹrst tooth appears. The earlier dental care is part of a childâs routine, the more likely he or she is to accept it as part of everyday life. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends using a softbristled brush with a small head. Ideally, use a toothbrush designed for infants, brushing teeth once per day at bedtime. The AAPD advises taking kids to visit a pediatric dentist when the ďŹrst tooth appears, or no later than the childâs ďŹrst birthday.
Make it a group effort. Young children love to imitate their parentsâ actions and behaviors, and moms and dads can use that adoration to their advantage when trying to get kids to brush their teeth. Brush teeth together as a family, making it seem like an enjoyable twice-daily activity. Get down on kidsâ level and show them how to brush. If kids are resistant, engage them in conversation while brushing so they donât even realize theyâre cleaning away.
Involve kids in choosing their dental care products. While parents should be mindful of the type of toothbrush their children use, always sticking with products recommended by their childâs pediatric dentist, let youngsters choose their toothbrush and toothpaste. Kids might prefer a particular ďŹavor of toothpaste, and a colorful toothbrush with a favorite ďŹlm or television character might make kids more enthusiastic and less fussy about brushing.
Compliment kids after positive dental appointments. When pediatric dentist appointments go well, compliment children and express your pride in them for taking dental hygiene as seriously as they do.
Q.DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband, who is 71, has been having some short-term memory problems over the past two years. We recently saw his primary care doctor, who asked him some questions and had him do a few tasks. He did fail a few of them. She agreed that there was something going on, and now we have to wait to see a neurologist.
He has an appointment for a colonoscopy next month, and Iâm concerned about how the anesthesia will affect his already compromised short-term memory. I saw the same thing happen with my father; he was having the same issues and broke his leg, which required surgery. He was never the same afterward. He couldnât live on his own anymore and required memory care right away. I have been told by medical staff at the hospital that this sometimes happens after a surgery because of anesthesia.
What are your thoughts about my husbandâs upcoming colonoscopy? Should I be worried about what this will do to his memory issues? -- S.L.
ANSWER: There are many kinds of memory issues that can affect older adults, and while Alzheimerâs disease is the most common, this does not mean that your husband has it. Getting an evaluation by a neurologist is an excellent idea.
A.Anesthesia does not cause dementia. However, some people, like your father, do develop a complication called postoperative delirium. Delirium is different from dementia because it comes on quickly. The cause is almost always identiďŹable, whether itâs due to medical illness, surgery, infection, low oxygen, metabolic abnormalities (such as sodium levels), etc. Delirium can last for a very long time and often unmask dementia that had been previously well-controlled.
The risk of delirium after the usual medication for a colonoscopy is small. The inhalation agents given in general anesthesia are much more likely to cause delirium. While a colonoscopy can be performed without sedation, in my opinion, the risk of delirium after a colonoscopy with the usual sedation is so low that it is not necessary to forgo it.
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. Š 2025 King Features Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved
The rich history of agriculture in the U.S. attracted colonists to the area. Since most colonists were European, the styles of agricultural cultivation and production were Europe inďŹuenced as well. Colonists also brought a large amount of livestock with them to America, which caused changes in its natural landscape. As the population grew, farms expanded, and settlements moved from the east into the west. This caused the agricultural industry to grow exponentially, with a larger variety of produce being rooted.

My dog has cancer. What next?
DEAR PAWâS CORNER: My Golden Retriever, âJasmine,â was recently diagnosed with lymphoma. Iâm devastated. She seemed to tire easily, so I took her to the vet for a checkup, where they said her lymph nodes were enlarged. They did a biopsy to conďŹrm that it was cancer. My question is, what now? The vet said she needs more tests, but Iâm not sure what happens after. -- Grace T., Hartford, Connecticut
DEARGRACE: Iâm glad you took Jasmine right to the vet, because even though the diagnosis is a serious one, she can start getting treatment that much sooner.
According to the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine, lymphoma is sadly common in Golden Retrievers and other dog breeds. However, it can be treated, with chemotherapy as the primary therapy. Surgery might be recommended depending on the type of cancer.
Now that lymphoma has been conďŹrmed through the biopsy, the next step is to determine how far the cancer has spread through Jasmineâs body. Several tests are done: blood tests, urinalysis, a bone marrow test, X-rays and sonograms. Some veterinary ofďŹces are equipped for these tests, but you may be referred to specialist care for more advanced testing. These tests are essential for developing an appropriate treatment plan for your dog.
If the vet has not yet followed up with next steps since the diagnosis was made, call and ask for more details and their recommendation. Most vets provide this information along with the diagnosis, so itâs worrisome that you donât have a path forward. You can always select a different vet if you arenât conďŹdent in the current one.

Thank you - to the person who paid for the quick grocery trip the kids and I took to HFMP a week ago last Wednesday. Sometimes we need a reminder that there ARE still kind people in this world. I for sure needed the reminder, going through a challenging season in life. Thank you, so much.
My seventeen year old neighbor, Jack, was coming home from track practice only to see several cars driving over an American ďŹag that had blown in the road from high winds. He was so appalled that cars were driving over it that he stopped his truck, stopped trafďŹc, retrieved the ďŹag, folded it, and returned it to the company it came from. There are still a lot of good teenagers around here. We are very proud of him.
it, we see you.
In our small town we have one chain coffee shop within one of our gas stations. They have eight (!!) of the large ďŹags lining the street and corner with their logo. And even more so, theyâre surrounding the small, local diner in the same parking lot. Itâs obnoxious.
For over four years now we have had to endure the toxic smoke that comes from our neighbors burn barrel. They burn now almost every day. Lots of us that live rurally have burn barrels that we burn sticks or paper in, but this family of pyromaniacs burns plastic and Styrofoam all the time in a barrel in the ditch on the edge of the road. Their garbage burns a black and grey smoke that makes it impossible to enjoy the outdoors. Most of the time they light it and then leave so they donât have to breath it like we do. Letâs be clear about something. Burning garbage in NY state is illegal. Google it. Too bad no one enforces the law though. It stinks to have to endure such horrible neighbors who know the smoke bothers us, but donât care. And get this, they actually pay for garbage pickup weekly.

For the past several months, Iâve been amazed at the photos and explanations Joe Altieri, a Webster-based photographer, shares with the world via social media. He has such an eye for angles and captures the beauty that is all around us, no matter the season. Itâs my pleasure to share his story here.
Born in Rochester and growing up in East Irondequoit as a ďŹrst-generation American to Italian parents, education was a priority in Joeâs household. As the eldest of three children, he grew up under the strong guidance of his father, who worked hard to ensure school prepared Joe and his siblings for success. Joe earned a Fine Arts degree in Industrial Design at the Rochester Institute of Technology, setting the stage for a career blending artistic vision with practical design. His early professional experience in graphic design allowed him to collaborate with local businesses alongside a supportive team, nurturing his passion for creative expression.
Joe was also a swim coach, where he found fulďŹllment in guiding students toward success and building connections with parents, which inspired him to pursue a degree in Art Education at Nazareth College, later earning a Masterâs in Educational Technology. His teaching journey spanned private institutions, the Rochester City School District, and a role as a building-based substitute in East Irondequoit, the community that shaped his childhood. Currently, he teaches Design Technology to seventh and eighth graders, integrating his artistic background into engaging, hands-on projects.
Photography, an integral part of Joeâs upbringing, became a serious pursuit over the past decade. His fatherâs camera, a cherished family heirloom, sparked Joeâs fascination with capturing lifeâs moments. âIt still works and every time I see it, Iâm ďŹooded with family memories,â he says. rough mentorship and exploration, Joe has honed his skills, gravitating toward wildlife, landscapes, astronomy, portraits, and abstract imagery. His love for birds, particularly eagles, deepened during the pandemic, a period that allowed him to closely observe and document the avian wonders of the region. He says, â e winter season brings them closer and more visible. Iâm inspired by their grace, strength, and resilience.â
Astrophotography has also been a passion, aligning with Joeâs enthusiasm for science and the cosmos. His photographic journey also expanded to include portraiture, where he found profound meaning in capturing milestone moments for high school seniors. For Joe, photography is more than a visual medium â it is a tool for education, storytelling, and community connection.
Joeâs approach to photography is deeply educational. Each image he shares serves as an opportunity to engage, inform, and inspire others. His goal is to create an environment where viewers can step outside their comfort zones, explore new perspectives, and engage in thought-provoking discussions, saying, âPhotography opens doors to those creative challenges that encourages others to explore, discover, and create their own unique experiences.â
While technology plays a role in his cra , his focus remains on composition, storytelling, and emotional impact rather than the latest equipment.
Photography has become a profound extension of Joeâs personality and interests, allowing him to forge meaningful connections with others. Whether through a landscape that evokes nostalgia, a wildlife shot that transports viewers to natureâs tranquility, or a portrait that preserves a signiďŹcant life event, his work elicits deep emotional responses. e joy of helping someone relive a cherished memory fuels his passion and motivates him to continue capturing and sharing moments that resonate.
Despite challenges of balancing work, family, and creative pursuits, Joe credits his wife as his biggest supporter, recognizing her patience and encouragement in his artistic endeavors. He ďŹnds inspiration in the ever-changing landscapes of the region, from the dynamic transformations brought by the seasons to the endless creative possibilities within local parks and lakes.
For Joe, the most rewarding aspect of photography is the human connection it fosters. e conversations sparked by his images, the shared experiences, and the stories exchanged along the way give depth to his work. To him, a photograph is

1/2 cup sugar
3 eggs
1 cup self-raising ďŹour Zest of 1 lemon
Drizzle:
Juice of 2 lemons
5 1/2 tablespoons sugar
LemonButtercream: 1/2 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
2 1/4 cups powdered sugar
Juice of 1/2 lemon
Sprinkles
Lemon Zest
Preheat the oven to 350° F and get 12 cupcake liners ready. Beat the butter with the sugar until light and ďŹuďŹy. Add the eggs, self-raising ďŹour and lemon zest and mix until combined. Spoon the mix evenly into the cupcake liners and bake for 18-22 minutes until they are baked through and springy to the touch.
Mix together the lemon juice and sugar for the drizzle in a bowl. Once the cupcakes are out of the oven, carefully spoon the drizzle over the cupcakes, then leave them to cool fully on a wire rack while you make the buttercream.
Beat the butter until smooth; this can take a couple of minutes. Add the powdered sugar in two batches, beating well after each addition, then add the lemon juice and beat again.
Pipe or spread the buttercream onto your cupcakes, then sprinkle each one with some sprinkles and lemon zest.

NOW HEREâS A TIP
How to pack a suitcase: Roll pants and tops, adding to suitcase ďŹrst, toward the handle side. Then add heavy items (shoes, boots) toward the wheel end. Make sure you choose the right size case for the trip; too much room will cause items to shift around.

To Post Your Event:
Log in and submit your event online at www.gvpennysaver.com/calendar or in person at: 1471 Route 15, Avon, NY 14414
Submit your event by the Monday 2 weeks prior to publication date.
Events must occur on a speciďŹc date and time. Event submissions may not include businesses or schools seeking registration for classes or programs, or organizations seeking crafters, vendors, or item donations. Genesee Valley Penny Saver reserves the right to approve/reject events for publication. Events are published as space allows.
⢠Conceal cables and cords. Cable and cord concealers are inexpensive and easily installed. Often used to cover cords hanging down from mounted televisions, concealers also can be used to hide cords coming from computers, lamps and other items that can pose a threat to young children.
⢠Avoid hand-me-down kidsâ furniture. The older a piece of furniture is, the less likely it is that the item will meet current safety guidelines. Some parents may be tempted to let their children sleep in the same crib they slept in as kids decades ago, but itâs safer to eschew nostalgia in favor of products that meet the latest safety standards.
⢠Get rid of potential choking hazards. Prior to bringing their babies home, expecting parents can remove all small trinkets and other items that curious children may want to put in their mouths. When buying toys for kids, read the packaging to make sure each item is safe for babies and avoid buying or accepting any gifts with small pieces.
⢠Store all medicines on high shelves behind cabinet doors. Vitamins and medicines should be stored on high shelves behind cabinet doors. If kids can see them, theyâll likely try to grab them. Hiding medicines on high shelves behind closed cabinet doors reduces the risk that kids will be poisoned and suffer a fallrelated injury.
The PathStone Weatherization Assistance Program is available for income-eligible households in Monroe County located outside of the city limits.
HEAP Recipients Automatically Eligible Income guidelines are: Family of 1: $39,864 Family of 2: $52,140 Family of 3: $64,404 Family of 4: $76,680

Recognize what you need. Lawyers specialize in many different areas of the law, so ďŹnding the right lawyer is not a one-size-ďŹts-all venture. Someone who needs help with estate planning will be looking for a different lawyer than someone seeking a personal injury specialist. Individuals are urged to identify which services they need and then narrow their search to include only those lawyers who specialize in providing them.
