W ater leaks. As sure as cable companies w ill do anything to avoid a la carte pricing, it w ill soon storm. And w hen it does, shine a flashlight up in the attic in search of not just dripping w ater and condensation, but also w ater stains on the ceiling, w alls and floor. All are signs that H2O is finding its w ay under your roof’s shingles or behind its flashings.
NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Apply lemon juice to the cut surface of an apple to prevent browning. * For stubborn dry patches on hands, like knuckles and around fingernails, try rubbing in a bit of Chapstick. It does the trick to moisturize, and it doesn’t wash off as easily. * “To protect feet from getting soggy when out in snowy or rainy weather, cut a piece of plastic wrap about 3 inches longer than your foot on both sides, then step on it and fold it up on all sides before you put your foot in your shoe. It also keeps feet warm.” -- M.S. in Colorado * “I use the old-fashioned round coffee filters to cover food in the microwave. Less expensive than paper plates and stays in place but doesn’t stick to food.” -- N.B. in Texas * D.R. in Illinois uses flip-flops for some unusual purposes, like covered with sandpaper as a sanding block, covered with a chamois for waxing a car or even to apply paint. He says they can be found on clearance for less than a dollar. One thing you shouldn’t do: “Don’t ever weed eat your driveway while wearing! Personal injury.”
Contact us today! 442.2030 ext. 752 www.pathstoneenergyinfo.com MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Jan. 1, 45 B.C., New Year’s Day is celebrated on January 1 for the first time as the Julian calendar takes effect. Julius Caesar enlisted the aid of Sosigenes, an Alexandrian astronomer, who calculated a year to be 365 and 1/4 days.
* When making meatloaf, put strips of raw bacon on the bottom of the pan and place the meatloaf on top. It adds terrific flavor and will keep the meatloaf from sticking to the pan. * “I purchased a dish drain pad approximately 9 inches by 17 inches, and I use it on the seat of my shower so it won’t be slippery. It fits perfect -- especially good for seniors! I am 86 years old, so I need all the help I can get.” -- B. B. In Massachusetts

DID YOU KNOW ? January w as not alw ays the first month of the year. Earlier calendars, such as the Julian calendar used by the Romans, considered M arch the first month of the year. These calendars w ere based largely around w eather and harvest schedules, and w inter w as considered to be a time w ithout definitive months. Eventually, the calendar w as expanded at around 713 BCE to include tw o additional months so it w ould equal a standard lunar year. Romans also w ere integral in giving the months their names, and some months got their names from Roman mythology and the gods of that time, w hile others w ere named after prominent Roman emperors. J anuary got its name from a Roman god named Janus, w ho w as c onsidered a god of transitions and beginnings. Janus w as depicted as a tw o-faced god, w hic h is appropriate in the present-day sinc e J anuary represents a time of saying goodbye to the old year and looking ahead to the new year.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles
The Best You Can Do A show of hands, please. Is anybody else getting worn out by the current state of our lives? Is there anything we can do about it? All I wanted was a package of socks. That shouldn’t be hard. In the past, once a year or so, I’d stroll into the local store, grab a package off the shelf (especially happy when I found a bonus pack with 2 extra pairs in it), pay for it and walk out. And now? Now I can’t find them anywhere. I don’t dare walk into stores just to wander around, so I’m left to do my hunt on the internet. These particular socks are nowhere to be found ... except for the ones at three times the price on Amazon. Then there was the phone call from a neighbor, in the middle of my hunt, describing a new family panic. A family member is undergoing serious medical treatment. They just learned that his nurse tested positive for COVID. Is anyone else tired of the need for constant vigilance because of COVID? The inability to acquire basic goods and sometimes food? The constant sad stories of seniors who are in rehab centers who haven’t had visitors in months? That’s probably what breaks my heart the most, all those lonely seniors in nursing homes or retirement centers. I can’t do anything about the state of the world, but I can do this: Over the next week I’m going to send individual notes and cards to the residents of a local nursing home. I got all their first names and last initials from the facility director, and I’ve ordered a big box of miscellaneous greeting cards. Each one will get a note and a cheery card from me. Maybe it will help brighten their day for a few minutes. It’s the best I can do. c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

TIPS TO HELP REALIZE YOUR GOALS IN THE YEAR AHEAD Make note of potential obstacles. Recognizing potential hurdles in advance of their appearance can help you overcome these obstacles and stay the course toward achieving your goals. For example, men and women hoping to lose weight can look ahead to occasions that might compromise their efforts, such as a loved one’s wedding or backyard barbecue. Recognizing these obstacles in advance gives people a chance to develop a plan to overcome them. In the weight loss example, men and women can choose vegetarian options from reception menus or resolve to avoid alcohol, which tends to be high in calories. REAL ESTATE

New Year’s Resolutions for Happy, Healthy Pets --DEAR READERS: As we close out one of the most tumultuous and stressful years of our lives, let’s look back and remember how much peace and joy our pets gave to us. When nothing else in the world seemed certain, we could count on our pets to offer unconditional love. That’s why, as we look forward to a new year and new hopes, we must honor and protect our best friends. Let’s resolve to: 1. Spend more time with our pets. Dogs and cats need regular attention and love. While we’re spending more time at home, it’s a perfect time to play with our pets, to add an extra training session and more walks into the routine. 2. Get pets the best care possible. Schedule that routine veterinary visit, and get your pets caught up on their vaccinations. A physical can head off serious illnesses. 3. Include your pets in your will. We don’t like to think about it, but end-of-life planning is important, and our pets need to be part of that planning. 4. Build lasting memories. Take as many photos with your pets as you can. Make scrapbooks that you can look through years from now to remember when your puppy was young, or to memorialize a beloved turtle, hamster, cat or dog. 5. Help other pet owners. So many people are silently struggling right now: either from job loss, ill health, grief or depression. They may not be able to take care of their pets as well as they can. Look out for your neighbors and offer to help if they ask for it. Donate money or supplies to local pet charities that offer assistance to pets and their owners. I wish you and your pets a happy, healthy 2021. Send your tips, comments and questions to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

Hearts for the Homeless Celebrates 30 Years on Christmas Eve BY AMANDA DUDEK
A
t some point, you have probably dropped gently used clothing into one of those little red donation bins found across Western New York and reaching nearly to Syracuse. Perhaps like me, you are simply glad your clothing, shoes, and blankets will be put to good use, but do you know where your donated items are going? You might be surprised! The red donation boxes, over 400 of them, all belong to Hearts for the Homeless (Hearts), a nonprofit organization on Tonawanda Street in Buffalo. Hearts’ stated mission is to be a mobile soup kitchen that feeds the poor and homeless on the street, characterized by a profound spiritual motivation. In doing so, Hearts offers nourishing food, as well as winter clothing, pertinent information regarding area services, companionship, and hope for the future. Hearts was founded in 1990 on Christmas Eve as an outreach and feeding program, including a motor home which was the beginnings of its Mobile Soup Kitchen outreach. The ministry grew quickly, adding its reading program in 1991 and its first thrift store in 1996. Ultimately, Hearts would open two more thrift stores before merging them all into a larger one, Hearts Thrift Shop, in 1999 at its present location. Hearts Thrift Shop serves a dual purpose. Not only does it provide the community with gently used, quality clothing along with personal care items, toiletries, jewelry, toys, housewares, games, and free books, but also, after expenses, it uses all proceeds from Hearts Thrift Shop to support the operation of its Mobile Soup Kitchen and Hearts Harvest Pantry and Café. This is one of the primary ways that Hearts for the Homeless is able to fund its outreach. Hearts’ impact has become quite extensive. The nonprofit served over 13,000 of Buffalo’s poor and homeless in 2019 and are on track to serve even more of those in need this year. With more people out of work due to the coronavirus, Hearts for the Homeless and its outreach have been more critical than ever before. Christmastime is always one of the busiest times of the year for Hearts, but this year, it is even more special. On Christmas Eve, 2020, Hearts for the Homeless celebrated its 30th anniversary. Not only did they serve Buffalo’s poor and homeless at their annual Christmas Eve dinner, but they also continued their tradition of Hearts for the Homeless Red Donation Bins can be playing Santa. An found across Upstate New York from Buffalo excerpt from their almost to Syracuse! newsletter explains.

In Buffalo, many of those in need enjoy Christmas Eve Dinner, courtesy of Hearts for the Homeless & the Buffalo Dream Center!
All through the Christmas season, the phones and doorbells continuously ring with people who want to make an impact on those who are underprivileged. Several churches and the Boy Scouts donate toys and gifts to be handed out to needy families via our thrift shop. The surprise on the faces of parents that were coming in with hope to buy a thrift item to put under the tree is that of immeasurable joy when they are asked if they would like to pick out brand new gifts at no charge! This is a favorite time for our thrift shop staff. Hearts for the Homeless plans to go on serving the Buffalo community while continuing to pursue its dream of opening a Harvest Pantry & Café as yet another way to serve those in need while raising funds to continue their ministry. Donating gently used clothing, shoes, and household items allows many of us to be a small part of the incredible work they do. The next time you put a bag in one of these bins, know that this local effort truly is helping those in need.
“Hope for the future!”

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Proper Technique Is Key to Accurate BP Reading ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have always read that when you are having your blood pressure taken, your arm should be elevated above your heart. When mine is taken this way, it is normal, around 120/70. When I go to the doctor, my blood pressure is taken with my arm hanging at my side. I often get a much higher reading taken this way, say, 140/90. Is there a correct way to take it, and does it affect the reading? My doctor said the position doesn’t matter and wants to prescribe medication. -- U.P. ANSWER: When taking the blood pressure, the goal is to approximate the blood pressure in the heart. That means that the blood pressure cuff should be at the level of the heart. If the blood pressure cuff is above the heart, then the blood pressure reading will be artificially low. If the blood pressure cuff is dangling below the level of the heart, the reading will be high. For every 10 cm (about 4 inches) above the heart, the blood pressure will be about 7 mm of mercury too low. If I stretch out my arm as high as I can above my heart, I can get it about 30 cm higher than my heart, which would be enough to explain the difference between the 140/90 and 120/70 you have observed. However, for most people when sitting up straight, a properly placed cuff on the arm will approximate the same level as the heart. Although you are right the position matters, it sounds like the doctor’s office is taking the reading correctly. I should also note that the feet should be resting on the floor, not dangling, which can artificially raise the blood pressure. The arm should be supported while taking the blood pressure. I recommend taking the blood pressure three times and using the average. Given how important blood pressure is, correct technique is essential in order to properly recommend who should get blood pressure treatment. Evidence is increasing that a 24-hour home blood pressure device is more accurate at determining who might need medication, especially in suspected white coat hypertension, where the readings are artificially high just because a person is in the office (even if they don’t feel nervous).

A Big Thanks to Anthony at Hamlin Post Office I ordered stamps online, and somehow, I missed that they were going to be delivered to the same address as mine, but to Rochester, rather than to my correct city. Anthony, the postmaster in Hamlin, got up with me the following day. He was so kind and considerate. Immediately, he remedied my problem. He said that he would replace all four books of stamps. How kind! Within minutes of our phone conversation, our doorbell rings, and low and behold, it is Anthony personally delivering them to my home. I am so thankful that there are still kind and considerate people in the world. Sad to say, the people who got my four books of stamps, as of yet, have made no attempt to return what does not belong to them.

Brilliant books Just opened a gift that we got for our grandkids: an encyclopedia. Remember those? And it is wonderful! Beautifully illustrated with a terrific variety of interesting subjects and fun to read, and published by Britannica who has a rich history in encyclopedias. And the beauty of such a resource is that it pulls you into its pages and information more so than any website ever could. The power of the printed page is still first when it comes to recall and exposure to more ideas than a static computer screen. Give your brain a break. Turn off the internet and pick up a book!
Merry Christmas! On December 21st, my estranged daughter and I decided to meet for breakfast at Patty’s Place in Canandaigua. While we were there, someone bought our breakfast for us. I would like to thank that person. He or she has no idea how much that meant to me as I am a single mom trying to hold things together. I was moved literally to tears. It was an important day for my daughter and I as we are trying to mend fences, and this person added to this important breakfast and reminded both of us to give. Thank you so much! You are a blessing in this world.
Refresh Your Home for Spring Eliminate the extras While you’re freshening up the house, it’s the perfect time to purge unwanted and unused items, but remember that items in good condition can actually do good for those in need. By donating clothing, electronics, furniture, household goods and vehicles to be sold in The Salvation Army Family and Thrift Stores, you can help transform lives in your local community. A good rule of thumb: if you haven’t used it in the last year and it doesn’t have special sentimental value, it’s probably time to let it go.
Santa Mobile On Monday, December 21, the Riga Recreation “Santa Mobile” took flight over the roads of Churchville/Riga in search of unique and tastefully decorated homes in the area. Santa was accompanied by his trusty elves and others to choose the 14 homes and then give them “Secret Santa” gift cards purchased from local businesses. We were greeted by many surprised smiles and the cards were given to residents in a socially distant manner. (Yes, Santa had his mask on!) Thanks to Bailey, Brooke, Lily, Sue, Ryan, and Matt for all their help to bring precious smiles to the faces of the homeowners. Merry Christmas, Dave, Riga Recreation Supervisor

HOMETOWN Penny Saver
My name is
Eggnog I am an 8-month-old Easter Egger. I may be a mix breed but I’m the best in the flock because I lay beautiful colored eggs like blue and green! I enjoy showing off each morning with my egg song, yes, I sing when I lay an egg! Whilst not strictly a purebred, the Easter Egger has become a backyard favorite across America. With its cute looks and vibrant personality what’s not to like? They are known as Easter Eggers because they can lay a wide variety of egg colors and their plumage can also be various colors. Generally, in the US an Easter Egger is a bird that is understood to carry the blue egg laying gene from its parent stock (the Araucana or Ameraucana).

DID YOU KNOW? New Year’s resolutions are made every January, and many people use this tradition as a chance to declare their intention to change jobs in the year ahead. The reasons why people change jobs vary, but the most popular reason to do so might surprise you. According to a LinkedIn survey of more than 10,000 people who recently changed jobs, 45 percent of respondents indicated they changed jobs due to a lack of opportunities for advancement with their previous employers. The next most popular reason to switch jobs was dissatisfaction with the leadership of senior management. Employers may be surprised to learn that dissatisfaction with compensation was relatively low on the list of why people changed jobs, as just 34 percent of respondents listed that among the top reasons why they left their old jobs. While that may encourage employers to find ways other than pay increases to keep their employees happy, it’s also important to note that the LinkedIn survey found that money was the second most popular reason job switchers, 74 percent of whom received higher salaries at their new jobs, chose their new positions.
