TIPS FOR REALIZING GOALS IN THE YEAR AHEAD Keep track of your progress. Keep a resolutions journal or start a blog that allows you to write about your efforts. If your goal is to pay down debt, make a spreadsheet that tracks your progress. That spreadsheet might be more motivational than simply seeing a loan or credit card balance gradually reduce on your monthly statement. Writing about your trials and errors can help others and also provide a great way for you to explore your approach and tinker with it to ensure your ultimate success.

STRANGE BUT TRUE
HOW TO DETERMINE IF IT’S TIME TO DOWNSIZE Space: Many people love the extra space that single-family homes provide. But seniors can take a walk through their homes and see how many rooms they still use on a consistent basis. If much of the home is unused, seniors can probably downsize without adversely affecting their daily lives.
By Lucie Winborne * In 1963, the Bronx Zoo had an exhibit called “The Most Dangerous Animal in the World.” It was a mirror.

DIFFERENT WAYS TO HELP RESOLUTIONS STICK THIS YEAR Get support or talk it out. Speaking about what you are going through and getting reassurance from other people can work wonders to strengthen resilience. When the desire to quit sneaks up, you can consult with a friend or consider a support group. For example, taking a group class at the gym may be a more effective motivational tool than working out solo.
STAY SAFE AND WARM DURING W INTER W ORKOUTS Wear appropriate headgear. For years, many people subscribed to the conventional w isdom that suggested people lose 40 to 45 percent of their body heat through their heads. But in 2008, researchers at Indiana University debunked that myth, suggesting that if humans lost that much heat through their heads, then they w ould be just as cold w hen going outside w ithout a hat on as they w ould be if they left home w ithout w earing any pants. But w earing headgear w hen exercising outdoors is still a good idea, as the head is more sensitive to changes in temperature than many other areas of the body. A w ool hat you can pull dow n over your ears can protect them from getting too cold. Athletes may also w ant to consider ski masks or other facial covers that can protect their faces w hen w inter w inds are how ling.

Keep your vehicle’s gas tank at least half full at all times during the winter to decrease the chances of moisture forming in the gas lines and possibly freezing. Winter Emergency Kit: In case of emergencies, you may get stuck or need to spend time in your car waiting for help. Make sure that your vehicle is equipped to handle a wide range of scenarios. Always be sure to carry a tire gauge, jack and fully inflated spare. If you get stuck, you’ll be glad to have a shovel and gravel, salt or a small piece of carpet for traction. Jumper cables or even a portable charger can help address battery related problems. Maximize your safety with emergency flares and a firstaid kit. In addition, stash a small supply of non-perishable food and water, as well as warm clothes or a blanket, especially if you’ll be driving lesser-traveled roads.

It is common for consumers to spend months researching and saving for new vehicles. But many auto buyers do not put the same amount of effort into finding auto loans. That’s unfortunate, as Consumer Reports notes that those who do not have financing arranged before visiting a dealership may not get the best loan terms. Prior to buying a vehicle, drivers should give consideration to how they appear in the eyes of creditors. Few if any people pay for cars or trucks in full at the time of purchase. As a result, it’s key for buyers to make themselves as attractive as possible in lenders’ eyes. Improving credit score: Lenders use consumers’ credit scores to determine how likely they will be to honor the terms of a potential loan. Consumers’ FICO® scores are the type of credit score most often used to make lending decisions. FICO scores range between 300 and 850. The higher the score, the lower the risk to lenders. However, lenders do not necessarily use the same formula to assess risk. The first step potential borrowers should take is figuring out what their credit score is, and what information is on their credit report. For those who haven’t done so already, they can request a free copy of their credit reports from the three major credit monitoring bureaus. Once credit reports are obtained, consumers can work to correct any mistakes or inconsistencies. Some of these may be simple fixes, while others may take some effort. A 2012 study from the Federal Trade Commission found that one in five consumers had an error on at least one of their credit reports. Consumers also can improve their credit scores by doing the following: • Make payments on time, as payment history can have the greatest effect on a bad credit score, according to Credit.com. • Reduce debt by paying off balances on credit cards or other loans. • Obtain a mix of different credit sources, such as those in the form of credit cards, furniture financing, home ownership, and auto loans. This, too, can raise credit scores and make borrowers appear less risky. • Keep old credit accounts open, as they establish a strong credit history. Try not to open too many new accounts in a short period of time. Borrowers with strong credit will be attractive to lenders and will have more loan options at their disposal.

As w inter w ears on, it’s not uncommon for people living in cold w eather climates to experience some cabin fever. W inter w eather confines many people to their homes, making many antsy to get out once the first signs of spring begin to appear. In addition to contributing to cabin fever, w inter w eather can have a negative impact on indoor air quality. W hile air pollution is something most often associated w ith densely populated cities, the air inside homes is not immune to pollution, especially during long w inters w hen w indow s are often closed for months at a time. * Cataract surgery was possible as early as the 6th century B.C. * Barbie’s physical appearance was inspired by a German doll named Bild Lilli, created in 1952 and based on a high-end call girl named Lilli who was featured in the comic strip “Bild-Zeitung.” She was sold as an adult novelty in bars and tobacco shops -- definitely not as a children’s toy. Barbie inventor Ruth Handler saw the doll while vacationing in Europe and brought it home. * Sunsets on Mars are blue. * Mob boss Vincent Gigante would wander around New York in his bathrobe to convince the police he was insane, and thus avoid capture. 585-967-7919 TIPS TO HELP REALIZE YOUR GOALS THIS YEAR Start small, but start immediately. Lifestyle changes can be difficult, so make small changes initially and gradually work toward larger, more significant changes. Starting small can lay a successful foundation, but it’s also important to start immediately. Procrastination can reduce the likelihood of achieving your goals, and the earlier you get started the more quickly you and your loved ones will adjust to the changes necessary to realize your goals.
Many people may be tempted to discard rusty tools that have gone unused and sat in a garage or shed for a significant period of time. But tools encrusted with rust do not need to be relegated to the trash bin, nor do gardeners have to toil for hours scraping and sanding off the rust. There’s a much easier way to restore rusty tools that relies on a common household ingredient: vinegar. Pour vinegar into a deep enough vessel to submerge the metal part of the tool. Soak the tool overnight. The next day, use a scouring pad to rub off the rust. If the tool is too big to fit into a can or bucket, simply wrap it with a vinegarsoaked rag and cover the whole tool with a tightly secured plastic bag. Follow the same procedure the next day. After all the rust is gone, rinse the tool in cool water and dry thoroughly. Then return it to regular usage.

MAKE THE YEAR AHEAD CLUTTER-FREE Many people feel the dawn of a new year provides an opportunity to clean the slate and begin anew. That notion can be applied in various ways, including around the house. Cleaning the slate at home may involve reducing clutter around the house. Clutter can gradually overtake a home’s interior, turning a once pristine home into one overwhelmed with nonessential items. As intimidating as clutter can seem, discarding it is easier than it may appear.

W ITH HELP FROM CHILE, BLUEBERRIES STAY FRESH ALL W INTER They’re delicious, nutritious and versatile. They’re naturally fatfree, high in vitamin C and a rich source of antioxidants. Americans love them in c ereals, salads, sauces and as toppings and by the handful, but w hen w inter comes around, many people assume fresh blueberry season is over. Not so fast. W hen the snow flies in M inneapolis, things are just heating up in places like Chile. Thanks to a robust South American fruit industry, fresh blueberries now maintain their favored position in North American produce aisles, culinary creations, and home kitchens all year long. The popularity of blueberries has soared in recent years, driven by their impressive nutritional resume. One half-c up of blueberries c ontains just 42 c alories and helps meet the recommended 5 to 9 servings a day of c olorful fruits and vegetables. The “ Little Blue Dynamos” pac k in fiber, potassium, Vitamin C and more cancer-fighting antioxidants than either w ine or green tea. Sowing Poetic Seeds: Webster’s Ron Friedman Spearheads the Webster Arboretum’s Poetry Trail BY RON FRIEDMAN
T
he Webster Arboretum at Kent Park (1700 Schlegel Rd.) is a jewel in Webster, NY. “Dedicated to quiet reflection, beauty, sights, smells, and sounds of nature,” the Arboretum’s Association aims to reflect on the past, provide for the present, and leave a memorial and vision of the future. Open dawn to 9 pm seven days a week, the arboretum provides incredible surroundings for relaxation and reflection, perfect for the poet within each of us. Proposed by Ron Friedman, the Arboretum will include poetry from Finger Lakes region poets later this year. Poems will be posted on signage throughout the park. The arboretum is rich with diverse plant material with seasonal interest, from spring blooming magnolias to later season dahlias and the peeling bark of lacebark maples. Texture, color, shapes, and sizes vary throughout the facility. Friedman sees poetry doing the same in a different medium and adds the element of human emotion. He sees poetry in the park’s architecture and finds it a perfect match. The installation of the poetry trail is scheduled for fall. Between now and then, there is a lot to do. Friedman lists grants being written, sponsors sought, and local schools and poetry / arts groups coordinated for contributions. A committee will select poems to dot the trails around the pond and back through the woodland areas. Local poets and educators are already supporting the project. Elizabeth Johnston and Sarah Cedeno, creative writing teachers at Monroe County Community College and the State University of NY at Brockport, agree the project makes poetry more accessible to the community and is a way to expose their students to a larger writing community. Jonathan Everitt, a Webster poet, says solitude is required for his writing effort. However, he also sees a need for a place for poets and writers to gather so they are part of a community. This project includes space for both. In addition to the park’s 12-20 signs with poetry, workshops and readings will lead up to the trail dedication. Local educators and poets will lead groups in writing exercises to unleash the creativity we all hold. Readings will also be scheduled and, depending upon funding acquired, some half or full day events may be offered. The Curry Building will host indoor events and when the weather’s right, the gazebo and pergola areas are ideal for readings. Tents may also be erected for larger events, allowing different sessions. The options are endless in this pristine natural fusion of poetry and nature. Friedman says they seek volunteers for a variety of tasks for the project. If interested, email Friedman directly at ronjf1@gmail. com, and please write Poetry Trail in the subject line. For more information on the Webster Arboretum and the poetry trail project, visit websterarboretum.org/. Donations should specify the poetry trail project.
The Solos
Dear
I want to talk about what I meant to say when the kite broke loose floating like a leaf into the horse corral north of our school on the hill.
Disease, knit me a Brillo sweater, a yellow cardigan anyone will want to borrow. Tick silently, you invisible clock. Wind the arms long to cover my fingers, to get in the way so I gnaw on fibers instead of morning shredded wheat. Launder it bitter. Scrub my teeth with obscenity. Relapse, lick like a bitten fork. Pierce like a swollen tongue. Rebel or puncture like a needle on skin. Disease, donate discards to the discount store: mismatched socks, Hanes t-shirts with irregular seams. Share discomfort with another patron, you generous thief. No Singer sewing machines, sweet knitting needles can mend a paying patient with a limp shoulder like yours. Relapse, baste a button up where there is no fabric --my jaw, maybe my mouth. Embroider my name on the tag because I’ll forget what it is I’ve said or worn. Relapse, uncomfortable seamstress of clumsiness and fatigue, leave the sweater half-sewn with pins at the seams. Button the wrong holes. Love, I’m forgiving as a missed stitch.
Do you remember its descent? I mean, the sky was blue, more than blue, beyond blue not the idea of blue. The few clouds, beyond the idea of white. Even though we would sing together on the stage it was the solos that still shake the air sways that kite back and forth feathering onto the earth awakes me at night thinking now is time for song. Let’s say, our high pitch can still reach those clouds like an invisible beanstalk with silken slick backed hair like Gilberto’s voice high above the rest. Or simply say, there are times in our lives when no words can describe colors we see beyond blue, beyond white. No sounds to describe pitches we hear. waves of sound and color go far on a warm day. this is a good life. Now, only now.

Here’s a Tip * If you lose a contact lens, you can try turning off the lights and using a flashlight held perpendicular to the floor. They sort of reflect the light, and as you move the beam of light across the floor, it will flash. This has helped me many times. I am a little clumsy when I put my contacts in. Thanks! -- R.E. in South Carolina * Great diet control tip: When serving dinner, portion out the meal, then pack up the leftovers right away. You won’t be as tempted to go back and have seconds, nor stuff a few more mouthfuls in when cleaning up later. * I have a medicine that I take with every meal. Surprisingly, it’s difficult to remember whether I took it already when I’m eating on the go or out with friends. I keep small containers in my purse labeled “lunch” and “dinner,” each with one pill inside. Before I eat, I look in the container. If a pill is there, it means I forgot to take it. Then I refill the container when I get home and it’s ready for next time. (c) 2024 King Features Synd., Inc.

HOW TO OVERCOME MENTAL FATIGUE
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Hot Flashes Persist Well Past Menopause and Thyroidectomy
Schedule time to relax. The pressure to feel as if you should always be doing something, whether it’s working, taking care of your family or tackling a to-do list around the house, can contribute to mental fatigue. Schedule time to relax and make a concerted effort to keep that time open. Avoid using scheduled relaxation time to work on household chores or check work emails. Instead, use this time to do something you find genuinely relaxing, even if that activity feels like you’re doing “nothing.”
Let’s HEAR it for 2024!
--DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 81 and had a thyroidectomy in 2017. My whole thyroid gland was removed. I also had a little bit of cancer. I have started to get hot flashes again. I had originally been on thyroid medicine before and after surgery. Then I was put on levothyroxine and decided to try NP Thyroid. I was doing better on NP Thyroid, then started getting the hot flashes again. At this point, for several reasons, I would rather stay on NP Thyroid for the time being. I was wondering if there is anything I can take for hot flashes? Years ago, in my 50s, I took estrogen, which helped, but this is a different time. I have spoken with other people who are also having hot flashes again. -- Anon. ANSWER: Hot flashes are common -- about 75% of women in North America will experience them around the time of menopause. It’s not uncommon for hot flashes to go away, then return, but I personally haven’t seen them recur after 30 or so years. I’d be concerned that there may be another cause for them, which brings me to your thyroid. Elevated levels of thyroid hormone can cause sensations very similar to hot flashes. One reason that I, along with most endocrinologists, recommend against products like NP Thyroid is because most of those products come from pigs. There are two thyroid hormones: thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). Humans have a different ratio of T3 and T4 than pigs do, with T4 getting converted into the active form, T3. T3 is then quickly broken down, so if it’s used, it needs to be dosed twice daily. As a result, if a person takes NP Thyroid, their thyroid levels are too high during one part of the day and too low during another. This isn’t good for anyone; the “high times” not only cause hot flashes, but also predispose people to atrial fibrillation. But it’s particularly a problem in a person with a history of thyroid cancer, where we want the thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH, the hormone in the pituitary gland that regulates the activity of the thyroid gland) to be on the lower side. If the thyroid blood levels get low in the afternoon/evening when the T3 in NP Thyroid is gone, that can theoretically increase the risk of cancer recurrence as the TSH rises in response. So, in my opinion, you should be on levothyroxine, not NP Thyroid. (I do have a handful of patients who take levothyroxine and also take T3 twice daily. Some people are unable to convert T4 to T3 efficiently.) Estrogen is the most effective treatment for hot flashes, but it increases the risk of heart disease when used by women more than 10 years away from menopause. I don’t normally prescribe it to a woman in her 80s. However, there is a new medication called fezolinetant (Veozah), which is highly effective and reduced hot flashes by 93% in a trial. My only patient on it so far has reported 100% cessation of her hot flashes. There are other rare causes of hot flashes, including tumors that secrete substances, such as carcinoid tumors, and tumors that secrete adrenalin-like hormones (pheochromocytomas).

TISSUE DONATION
DID YOU KNOW?
The decision to become an organ donor is a selfless act that quite often saves lives. Many people sign up to be organ donors when getting or renewing their driver’s licenses. But those same people may not know that they also can sign up to be tissue donors.
Many people make losing weight and/or getting fit their New Year’s resolutions, and the dawn of a new calendar year is often a great time to find discounts on gym memberships. According to Consumer Reports, many gyms and fitness centers, recognizing the desire people have to start the year off on a healthy foot, will greatly discount the cost of memberships in January. But signing up for a discounted gym membership on the morning of January 1 is not the only way to save money and still get fit. Prospective members willing to commit to 12-month memberships may be able to get a gym with costly initiation fees to waive that fee. In addition, e-commerce businesses like Groupon® and LivingSocial may also offer discounted memberships to area gyms through their websites. Fitness-minded people may also be eligible for health club rebates through their health insurance plans. In such instances, health insurance providers may reward policy holders who visit the gym a predetermined number of times in a specific time frame (i.e., 50 visits in six months) with rebates. Such rebates can save club members several hundred dollars per year, greatly reducing the overall cost of their gym memberships.
According to Donate Life America, one tissue donor can help more than 75 people heal. Donated tissue is often used during surgeries and can help people in life-threatening situations. People with severe burns often benefit from tissue donation, as do athletes who have suffered torn ligaments or tendons and active and veteran military members who have been injured during combat. MTF Biologics, a New Jerseybased organization that has spent more than 30 years developing tissue grafting solutions to help people heal, advises all people, regardless of their age or medical histories, to consider themselves potential tissue donors. Much like with organ donors, a person’s condition at the time of death will determine if their tissue can donated. That means prospective tissue donors have nothing to lose by signing up. People interested in becoming tissue donors can register at www.donatelife.net. Page 19

Gratitude Finland has been rated the world’s most “happiest” country. Connection with nature, community and simplicity are three of the major factors cited as to the Finnish quality of life. However, there is an over-riding factor that they’ve learned that stands out for them and perhaps for us - gratitude. To quote: “The Nordic countries are united in their embrace of curbed aspirations for the best possible life. This mentality is famously captured in the Law of Jante -- a set of commandments believed to capture something essential about the Nordic disposition,” he explains. They include: “You’re not to think you are anything special” and “You’re not to imagine yourself better than we are.” Which, as Savolainen points out, is pretty much the opposite of America’s endless pursuit of personal and national exceptionalism. This is a great time of year to take stock of what we all have and be grateful. Amen.

Sally Elizabeth (Owen) Rosicka January 1, 2024 Livonia: Sally Elizabeth (Owen) Rosicka peacefully departed this world on Monday, January 1, 2024 at the age of 84. Sally is predeceased by her husband, Joseph Rosicka and parents, Thomas and Margery Owen. She is survived by her sister, Virginia (Alphonse) Philippy; children, Thomas (Donna) Rosicka, Daniel (Whitney) Rosicka, Joseph Rosicka lll, Rhiannon (David) McDevitt, and Sarah (Thomas) Thorjusen. She is also remembered fondly by her 7 grandchildren, one great-grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews who loved her dearly. Born in Rochester, NY in 1939, Sally graduated from Rush Henrietta Central High School in 1956. She was an active Girl Scout and 4-H member, earning accolades for her exceptional skills in baking and sewing. She then went on to attend Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio, where she was a proud member of Chi Omega Sorority. Sally graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1960. During her senior year at Wittenburg University, she met her future husband and love of her life, Joseph. They were married shortly thereafter in St. Mary’s Church in Canandaigua, NY. Sally and Joe returned to Springfield, Ohio where she lived for 20+ years, raising her children and aided her husband in the running of the family paving business, Springfield Blacktop. She was a devoted mother, supporting all her children’s interests or activities and staunchly encouraged her children, never missing a game, concert or event. Sally greatly treasured her time with her grandchildren later in her years.
Puzzle Answers This Week
Sally and family returned to New York in the early 1980s. Sally and Joe’s marriage was a testament to enduring love, lasting almost 40 years until Joe’s passing in 2000. For more than 20 years, Sally worked for Finger Lakes Developmental Disabilities Service Office. She held various roles during her tenure there, always serving with great compassion and great care. Incredibly intelligent, informed and multi-talented, Sally was an avid reader and frequent patron of local libraries. She was a skilled seamstress, cook, baker and gardener. Her green thumb could bring any plant back to life and all plants thrived from her attention.
RODENTS
Sally’s kind heart, selflessness, humility and quirky humor touched many lives. Many will remember Sally for her kindness and the way she naturally put people at ease in her company. She was an uncommonly strong woman who was fiercely devoted to her husband and their five children. Her legacy continues in the memories we hold and the example she set with her infinite patience and consideration for others. While her passing brings sorrow, the knowledge that she is now at peace with God provides solace to those who mourn her departure. “Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God our Father, who loved us and gave us eternal comfort and good hope through grace, comfort your hearts and establish them in every good work and word.” Thess. 2:16 Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to: The Honeoye Public Library, 8708 Main St., Honeoye, NY 14471. Arrangements were made by the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home, 21 Big Tree Street, Livonia, NY 14487. QUALITIES TO LOOK FOR IN A POST-RETIREMENT JOB
EFFICIENCY AT WORK
Engagement: A job seniors find engaging also is more likely to provide the types of benefits seniors are looking for in post-retirement work. For example, researchers at Boston College’s Sloan Center on Aging and Work found that seniors who find a job or volunteering opportunity truly engaging are more likely to benefit psychologically from those experiences than those whose post-retirement work is not engaging. If seniors find themselves simply going through the motions with their post-retirement work, they can look for opportunities that they can be more enthusiastic about.
Figures from the U.S. Census Bureau indicates that the average worker spent 26 minutes traveling to work, the most recent year for which the USCB has data. That marks a nearly 20 percent increase in average commute time since 1980. Things aren’t much better in Canada, where the National Household Survey found that the average commuter spends just over 25 minutes traveling to work each day. People who commute via public transportation can use the time they spend going to and from the office to answer emails, review schedules or even work on projects. Commuters who drive themselves to work can consider switching to public transportation or, if possible, move closer to their offices so they spend less time sitting in their vehicles, where they have no choice but to be unproductive.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Aggressive Dogs Keep Owner Away From the Dog Park DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’ve had to change the time of day that I visit the local dog park, because a new neighbor brings his two huge, aggressive dogs each morning at the same time as I do. They charge other humans, chase and snarl at other dogs, and make it impossible for other dogs to socialize calmly. The neighbor does nothing to control them and tells other owners that it’s their fault that his dogs are acting aggressive. To prevent injury to my dog (or myself), I now wait until after work to go. But this is inconvenient for everyone in the neighborhood. How do I address this problem? -- Dog Mom in New York DEAR DOG MOM: You’re doing the right thing by changing the time that you bring your dog to the park. It’s important to remove a dog from a situation you perceive as potentially dangerous or traumatic for them, and protecting them from harm. That’s only the first step, however. The new dogs are terrorizing other dogs within the park, making life miserable for them and their owners. It’s not fair, nor is it right. Dog parks within a city or town typically have rules of conduct posted at each entrance, but sometimes they’re vague. It’s up to each owner to properly train and socialize their dogs, and to keep them away from the park if they can’t control rough play, aggression or reactivity. Report the problem to the organization in charge of maintaining the dog park. This may be a community group or the municipal parks department. Contacting animal control is another option. Write down the dates and times that incidents have occurred. If there is no active community group for the dog park, consider starting one so that owners can air their grievances and work out problems as a group. H(c) 2023 King Features Synd., Inc.
