Shoveling or removing snow by various methods can be strenuous work, taking even those who feel they are in good shape by surprise. A 2011 study conducted by researchers at the Center for Injury Research and Policy of The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital found that an average of 11,500 snow-shovelingrelated injuries and medical emergencies were treated in U.S. emergency departments each year from 1990 to 2006. Lower back injuries, falls, injuries to the arms and hands and cardiac-related injuries account for many of the incidents sustained while removing snow. There’s also the risk of injury from collisions with pedestrians and snow plows. Plows and bobcattype devices can cause serious injury. Exercise caution when operating such machines.

CCE-MONROE RECEIVES FUNDING FOR WORKSHOPS

Promote the Use of Battery-Powered Landscape Tools by Marci Muller

C

CE-Monroe has received funding through the New York State Pollution Prevention Institute to offer a series of workshops promoting the advantages of using battery-powered landscape tools in place of traditional gas-powered equipment.

Local suppliers of battery-powered tools will be invited to each workshop to share with attendees the tool lines that they sell and any sales-incentives they might have to offer. For information on the upcoming workshops, please contact Marci Muller, 585-753-2557 or mem545@cornell.edu

The goal of our project is to have a positive impact on the purchasing decisions made by property managers, landscape companies and the general public in regard to landscape equipment. Through educational workshops and literature distribution we will share information and personal testimonies to encourage purchasers to replace old landscape tools with battery-powered ones. The long-range impact from the success of these efforts will be cleaner air and less noise for the people using the equipment and the people who live and/or work in areas where landscape maintenance is being done. Gas-powered tools spew Carbon Monoxide, Nitrogen Oxides and particulate matter, polluting the air and endangering the individuals who operate the equipment. In addition, the noise pollution from gas-powered tools exceeds the limits issued by OSHA by a substantial increase. CCE-Monroe will provide six workshops between April and November 2022 to share information with individuals who make purchasing decisions for their landscape/ property maintenance business. We will also create flyers with similar information that can be distributed to the general public through City of Rochester Recreation Centers, Monroe County Parks and local garden centers. CCE-Monroe will create a video highlighting Cornell University Grounds Department, which has been transitioning to battery-powered equipment over the past several years. The video will be featured at the six workshops, along with other research that supports the environmentalfriendly nature of battery-powered tools and their ability to perform as well as gas-powered equipment.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I had an abdominal X-ray to check on my gallstones, and was surprised to find an enlarged spleen. I was told it might be leukemia or lymphoma! I was sent to an oncologist, who reassured me that I did not have cancer and recommended I get checked again in six months. My doctor checked it after three, and my spleen had gone back down! What is all this with the spleen? People have it removed after injuries, like accidents. It seems to be insignificant, but can it be an omen for cancer? -- M.K. ANSWER: The spleen is an underappreciated abdominal organ. Its major job is to filter and remove old or damaged red blood cells, but it also removes bacteria. In addition, the spleen acts as a very large lymph node, allowing infection-fighting white blood cells to gather and activate. Removal of the spleen leaves people at a higher risk of some kinds of bacterial infections. Enlargement of the spleen has many potential causes. Both liver and heart disease can cause passive congestion of the spleen with blood. Cancer, especially lymphoma, is a common cause, but infection is one cause to consider in a person in whom the spleen enlarges and then returns to normal. There are many less-common causes as well. If the spleen is removed or is nonfunctional (this is almost universal in adults with sickle cell disease, for example), then infections are common, and vaccinations have a different and more intensive schedule, ideally given when the spleen is still in place and working. It is probably worth it for your doctor to continue to keep an eye on.

I HAVE A DREAM... Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech, which was delivered to a crowd of 250,000 in Washington, D.C., on August 28, 1963, is one of the most memorable moments of Dr. King’s life. In the 17-minute monologue, Dr. King called for an end to racism. Interestingly, the “dream” component of the speech wasn’t in the original draft. Gospel singer Mahalia Jackson reportedly coached Dr. King to tell the listeners “about the dream.”

The TRUTH about life is stated: ‘’This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy; Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good; Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of Godliness, but denying the power thereof!’’ (2 Timothy 3) If you don’t realize you’re in the Last Days, you haven’t been paying attention. Thankfully there is a saving grace. The spiritual New Birth is waiting on you to personally receive God’s Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.

Leisure activities may be widely viewed as fun ways to fill up free time, but the benefits of leisure activities extend beyond beating boredom. A 2011 analysis published in the journal BBA Molecular Basis of Disease found that leisure activities have a positive impact on cognitive function and dementia. The analysis, conducted by researchers with the Aging Research Center in Stockholm who examined various studies regarding the relationship between certain activities and cognitive function, defined leisure activity as the voluntary use of free time for activities outside the home. After retirement, leisure time constitutes a large part of many retirees’ lives, and finding ways to fill that time is more beneficial than merely avoiding boredom. The researchers behind the study concluded that the existing research is insufficient to draw any firm conclusions regarding the effects of certain types of leisure activities on the risk for dementia and cognitive decline, though they did note that multi-domain cognitive training has the potential to improve cognitive function in healthy older adults and slow decline in affected individuals. A multi-domain approach to cognitive training involves memory, reasoning, problem-solving, and map reading, among other activities. Aging adults who embrace activities that require the use of such skills may find that they’re not only finding stimulating ways to fill their free time, but increasing their chances of long-term cognitive health as well.

HOW TO DETERMINE IF IT’S TIME TO DOWNSIZE Market: The real estate market is another factor to consider when deciding if the time is right to downsize. A seller’s market can help seniors get the biggest return on their real estate investment, potentially helping them make up for meager retirement savings. For example, home prices skyrocketed across the country during the COVID-19 pandemic, making that a great time for sellers to put their homes on the market. Seniors selling to downsize may capitalize on such spikes since they won’t be looking to turn around and buy larger, equally expensive homes once they sell their current place. If the market is down and seniors can withstand the work and cost a little longer, it may be best to wait until things bounce back in sellers’ favor.

TIPS FOR REALIZING GOALS IN THE YEAR AHEAD

Canandaigua Jewelry & Coin Exchange

Keep track of your progress. Keep a resolutions journal or start a blog that allows you to write about your efforts. If your goal is to pay down debt, make a spreadsheet that tracks your progress. That spreadsheet might be more motivational than simply seeing a loan or credit card balance gradually reduce on your monthly statement. Writing about your trials and errors can help others and also provide a great way for you to explore your approach and tinker with it to ensure your ultimate success.

AT-HOME NUTRITION AND COOKING WITH KIDS RECIPES FOR FUN: If you’re preparing a meal, it could be a good time to teach children of reading age how to review a recipe. Evaluating ingredients to learn how food transforms from raw to cooked or how a dish is created can help kids learn kitchen skills. FOOD GROUPS FOCUS: Get kids involved in making dinner by setting a rule that each food group must be represented. Give them a warmup activity by asking which food groups are found in family favorites like chicken soup, lasagna or meatloaf. Asking kids to guess which ingredients are used in these dishes and identifying which food group each ingredient belongs to can help them understand dietary balance.

Some say a solution of three parts vinegar to one-part water sprayed on the windshield each night can cut your ice-scraping time in half or better. (Use caution to avoid your paint job.) Also, try covering your wipers with an old pair of long socks so they don’t freeze to the glass! * “For pastry cooking, try grating frozen butter into the flour. I don’t end up having to put it in the fridge to cool it back down.” -- C.S. in South Carolina

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Off-Leash Dogs Bane of His Walks in Woods DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My dog “Hatch” and I frequently walk the trails of a state park near my house. A leash is required in the park, but many dog owners ignore this rule and allow their dogs to bound ahead. Not all of these dogs are well-socialized, and we’ve faced aggressive, unleashed dogs on the trails. I carry a walking stick in case I need to fend off an attacking dog -- something that hasn’t happened yet, though it’s come close once or twice. Please help me make other dog owners aware that off-leash dogs can make other dogs, and humans, quite nervous. Keeping dogs on leash will help avoid a confrontation, fight or injury. -- Doug S., Stoneham, Massachusetts DEAR DOUG: You’re absolutely right! Dog owners, always review the rules regarding pets on park lands. Even though forested trails seem remote and safer for dogs to run free without a leash, you never know if another dog is just around the bend. Further, even a leashed dog needs to follow basic commands like sit, stay and heel, and to come back immediately when called if the leash is accidentally dropped. Rules are typically posted at trailheads, as well as on park websites. There’s no reason to not be familiar with leash rules before going for a hike. If you encounter an off-leash dog while on a trail, remain calm. Shorten your dog’s leash so that he walks next to you. Stay calm and relaxed with the owner when they finally appear, too. Ask if they’re aware that there’s a leash rule on the trail, but don’t start a confrontation. The more awareness you can build of your park’s rules, the fewer offleash meetings you’ll face. Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

In winter the stars seem to have rekindled their fires, the moon achieves a fuller triumph, and the heavens wear a look of a more exalted simplicity. ~ John Burroughs, “The Snow-Walkers,” 1866

RESOLVE TO WEAR CLOTHES THAT FIT IN THE YEAR AHEAD Bra measurements are hard to come by, no doubt thanks in part to the nature of getting measured in such an intimate area of the body. But considering undergarments set the foundation for all clothing worn on top, this is one of the more important measurements to verify. Enlist the help of a friend or family member to make measurements go more smoothly. ●

Updating Your Home’s Electrical System

HOME SERVICES

When it com es tim e to update the electrical system , it is alw ays best to w ork w ith licensed and bonded electricians w ho have the expertise to w ork w ith electrical w iring w ithout getting injured. This is not a do-it-yourself type of job since it requires specialized training. Electricians likely w ill recom m end upgrading the electrical panel to bring m ore pow er from the utility poles into the hom e. This can include replacing the existing m eter and circuit breaker box to allow it to handle m ore pow er or replacing item s that are obsolete or dangerous. M any older hom es are only capable of handling a m inim um num ber of am ps, utilizing just a few circuits. But now adays, w hen hom eow ners have far m ore electronics in their hom es than they once did, increased dem and on electricity can overload a circuit. Tripping a circuit breaker is a safety m easure to prevent the w ire from becom ing overheated and causing a fire. How ever, in som e old system s, the circuit breaker w ill not trip, and this can be problem atic. Rew iring a hom e is another step. Wire insulation can deteriorate over tim e, and new w ires m ay be needed. This can be m essy and tim e-consum ing, but it’s a sm all price to pay for safety. When rew iring an electrician also m ay suggest new outlets. M any hom e building codes now require outlets w ith ground fault interruptors, or GFIs, in kitchens, bathroom s and other room s exposed to m oisture. Som e older hom es m ay not even have three-pronged outlets, so this w ill necessitate an update as w ell.

Set the right temperature. The NSF notes that research indicates a bedroom temperature of roughly 65 F makes for the best sleep. Human beings’ body temperatures rise and fall throughout the day, reaching their lowest level around 5 a.m. each day before slowly climbing as morning begins. A room that is too warm overnight may interfere with this natural dip, leading to restlessness. If necessary, install a programmable thermostat in the bedroom so the temperature in the room remains steady and in line with your body’s natural temperature fluctuations.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles

Is Telehealth All It’s Cracked Up to Be

Medicare started paying for telehealth medical visits last year and will continue through the end of 2023. With telehealth, we sit in our homes and talk to our doctor on a screen, and Medicare pays for it. In the beginning, the number of telehealth visits skyrocketed -- and then fell dramatically. Is that because we learned the hard way just what the limitations of telehealth really are? There are people on both sides of the “should seniors use telehealth” debate. They both say they offer solid evidence for their opinion. Those who claim it’s a great thing for us to consult with our doctors via a little screen say it’s helpful because it keeps us out of the doctor’s office. We don’t have to go in among all the germs, and we don’t need to worry about transportation. On the other hand, those who are against telehealth appointments for seniors argue that many of us can’t even afford the very devices we would need for telehealth. Even if we have a cellphone, the screen is so small as to be worthless, especially if we have a vision or hearing problem. Then there are the plan fees needed for that device. And what of privacy when we need someone at hand to help navigate the software for us? Do we really want our grandchildren sitting there when we discuss a personal issue with our doctor? Even if we have a computer, one with a large monitor, how is that going to work when we need the doctor to look at a rash on our back? Or if we really ought to have a stethoscope pressed to our chest because of that ragged cough we’ve had for days? Note: If you have original Medicare, you’ll pay the same amount for the telehealth appointment as you would if you got the services in person. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

S T N RA S E V RA Thank you, emergency responders! Hidden Meadows in Bergen, NY, is a quiet retirement community. Most of the residents are retired, so the pace of life is gentle, and the atmosphere is warm and friendly. This peace was shattered on Thursday, 12/30/21 just before 8:00 p.m. when a house exploded into flames. Neighbors, with the help of firemen, forced the door open, pulled the owner of the home out, and put her on oxygen. Almost certainly, they saved her life. The residents of Hidden Meadows Senior Community want to say, “Thank you!” to the Firefighters, EMTs and other related Emergency Response personnel. We are proud of your work and grateful for your service. May God bless you and watch over you! Wonderful neighbors! I am very blessed to live next door to the Hensler family. Words cannot adequately express how much their acts of kindness mean to me. Thank you. - JMH Rescued I have to thank a special person who took the time to help my runaway pup. This was in the afternoon on 1/10/22. My pup had got out of her collar and ran to a busy complex road. By the time I got back to the road, this person had my pup in her vehicle and then handed her to me. My thanks also to those who took the time to stop their vehicles and were patient. My pup survived the ordeal without harm. She means the world to me. I can’t express my gratitude enough for the helpfulness. God Bless!

No Jingle Bells? It seems like every day an old tradition or piece of history gets trashed or destroyed in our country by some so-called, well-meaning group. [Local school] recently banned playing or singing Jingle Bells. What's next, telling the students there's no Santa Claus or Easter Bunny? I think they should have to specify their reasons to the taxpayers of their school district. Side street speeding I live on the east side of [local town], and I can't believe how many people fly down my street. A lot of the streets don't have sidewalks, so I keep my dog on the grass, but sometimes I'm scared for myself because when there's a car coming from each direction, neither one will slow down. These are residential areas, not the expressway. Reasonable tree prices To the person complaining about Christmas tree prices: it is the one time of year that those families make the bulk of their income (especially local). It costs money, time, and energy to grow those trees and keep them healthy for you and your families to enjoy. If your tree cost you $54, that means it cost $4.50 a month. Then you have to count all those years they kept that tree. It really isn’t that expensive. They are farmers! They have to raise prices just as everyone else in the economy has. They need to make a living, too. Honestly, if you’re not happy about it, be a Scrooge and don’t get a tree at all.

Animal cruelty I have been made aware of a very sad, and possibly cruel, situation. On a local country road, there are three horses standing in a small corral that is all mud. They are very close to the road, and although I saw some hay spread on top of the mud, the horses look scrawny and sick. They look like they huddle together for warmth. I saw no shelter they could go into in this bitter weather. My question is this: why do people keep pets if they don’t take care of them? I worry for them on these frigid days and nights, but apparently there are no laws preventing this type of abuse.

CREATE AN ENDURING MEMORIAL FOR A LOVED ONE Plant a tree. Trees have long symbolized life and wisdom. Trees can live for dozens of years, growing larger and more vibrant with each year that passes. Planting a tree in a loved one’s name will create a beautiful respite that people can visit and enjoy. A small plaque or another type of sign can feature the name of the person being memorialized.

THE RIGHT WAY TO UPDATE A RÉSUMÉ Embrace keywords. Many employers now use application tracking software to sift through the scores of résumés that are submitted for each opening they post. Keywords make it easy for employers to sort through thousands of résumés. The right keywords will flag your résumé and increase your “relevancy score” in the main HR/recruiting software programs available. Adapt your résumé for each application you submit. Use some of the words listed in the initial job posting and description. In addition, look at similar job postings and incorporate some keywords listed in those ads so that you have all the bases covered.

RELIEVE STRESS THROUGHOUT THE DAY Walk away. The APA notes that taking a break from a stressor is one of a handful of healthy techniques that research has indicated is a successful way to reduce stress, both in the short- and long-term. If a project at work is proving especially stressful, step away for a short period of time to do something else, whether it’s to go for a brief walk or converse with a coworker about something unrelated to the project. Avoiding the stress entirely, especially if it’s a work project or a bill that must be paid, is not the answer. But a short break from the stressor and thinking about it can provide a new perspective and time to calm down.

When the desire to quit sneaks up, you can consult with a friend or consider a support group. For example, taking a group class at the gym may be a more effective motivational tool than working out solo.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Had Georgie Fletcher of Australia never signed on to play the mobile game “Words With Friends,” her husband, Simon, might be dead. Georgie struck up a friendship via the game’s chat feature with frequent opponent Beth Legler from Missouri. One day, Georgie told Beth that Simon hadn’t been feeling well. Beth relayed his symptoms to her husband Larry, a doctor, who insisted that the Fletchers go to the hospital immediately. A 99% blockage was discovered near his heart, which, left untreated, would have certainly been fatal. * The process of things being stretched out and torn apart as they enter a black hole is called spaghettification. * Our senses of taste and smell are cut by 50% and 20%, respectively, during flights, which is why airplane food has never tasted so hot. (“That’s what I’ve been telling you!” said every airplane food chef, ever.) *** Thought for the Day: “A mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions.” -- Oliver Wendell Holmes
