PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

Greyhounds are very fast. Some retired racing greyhounds can hit speeds as high as 45 miles per hour. While they only achieve such speeds for very short periods of time, that’s still pretty fast.

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson
HEAP Recipients Automatically Eligible: Income guidelines are: Household Monthly Income
Set up an accountability system. Institute a rewards system for your success. You might even use a monetary system as a double-bonus. When you stick to a resolution over a predetermined period, put a dollar in a jar. If you fall off course, take a dollar away. Find the incentive that works for you.
* N.B. of Texas, writes: “I never could find the time to exercise. When I got home, I had to rush to get supper, etc., and afterward all I wanted to do was plop down and watch television. Then I got an exercise mat and a stationary bicycle. When I couldn’t work out very long, I worked out during commercials. I’ve lost 3 pounds so far!” Great idea for all those with fitness on their New Year’s Resolution lists, Nancy! * Two wonderful tips came in from G.K. of Minnesota: “To protect floors from being damaged by chairs being pushed around, glue rounds of carpeting beneath the chair legs. They are easily removed for replacing as they wear down. Also, when making bread or rolls, warm the flour in the oven or microwave so as not to chill the butter. The dough will rise faster.” * B.W. of Colorado swears by brake cleaner to get rid of bad spots on carpets. “Regular automotive brake cleaner on the spot and a clean rag will remove almost all stains,” he says. * “In cold winter months, keep your robe (and slippers or whatever else) under the covers with you when you sleep. Pull it next to or over you a few minutes before you get up. It’ll be toasty and will help make the transition into the cold a little less harsh.” -- B.M. in New York * If your animals try to get out when you go into or out of the house, keep some toys or treats in your pocket or near the door to throw across the room, giving you a few seconds to slip in or out.

Demolition: Demolition involves more than picking up a sledgehammer and swinging away. Some demolition projects are best left to the pros. For example, any projects that involve exposure to hazardous materials are risky and therefore best left to experienced laborers. However, many homeowners are capable of safely and effectively pulling cabinets from walls, removing flooring or knocking down drywall. Homeowners unsure of how to approach demolition tasks can ask their contractors to demonstrate the proper technique so the demolition is done right and on time.

Happy ! New Year
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Office Test Alone Can’t Diagnose COPD ---
Resolving To Hear Better? Listening more in the new year. Not missing out on the important moments.
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a healthy 70-year-old woman. The only prescription medication I take is for dry eyes. I recently visited my new primary physician for the first time, and she had me do a breathing test, where I exhaled into a tube to measure airflow. I was told to breathe deeply and exhale completely into the tube three times in succession. It took less than a minute to complete. It is apparently a routine test she orders for new patients. She then told me I have COPD, on the basis of that test alone. She asked if I had ever smoked or been exposed to secondhand smoke. That was her only question -coughing or shortness of breath was never mentioned. I have never smoked, but my father was a smoker when I was growing up. I actually do have a slightly productive cough most mornings. I probably walk about 10 miles a week, and I do notice some shortness of breath on long uphill sections, though I can walk briskly in level areas for miles with no problem. She said it is not advanced enough to require an inhaler at this time. I am bothered by this very easy “diagnosis” on the basis of one simple test. I wonder if I should ask to be referred to a pulmonologist for a more thorough evaluation. -- O.P. ANSWER: The test your doctor performed is called office spirometry, and it is useful for monitoring known pulmonary diseases, especially COPD and asthma. However, by itself, it is inadequate to make the diagnosis of COPD, which I am not sure you have. The diagnosis of COPD is made in people with persistent respiratory symptoms, usually shortness of breath or coughing. Spirometry will usually show obstruction to airflow. Formal pulmonary function testing, which is an extensive process taking an hour or so with a skilled and experienced technician, is ideal for determining severity. The problem with getting a breathing test in someone who has no significant symptoms is that you can find someone whose test results are at or just below the lower limit of normal, and the diagnosis is unclear. The prognosis for people with mild airway obstruction but with no symptoms of COPD is much better than for people with COPD and who continue to smoke. For this reason, using spirometry as a screening test for everyone is not recommended. Without knowing the exact results of your spirometry, I suspect you do not have COPD, given your absence of smoking and your extremely mild symptoms. A comprehensive exam by a pulmonologist would be definitive and may help you be less anxious about the results you have now. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2021 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

‘BREATHE EASIER’ HEALTHCARE DONATION PROGRAM (NAPSI)—Healthcare workers on the front lines of the pandemic are in desperate need of creative solutions to the lack of personal protective gear and supplies that help block harmful airborne pathogens. But civic-minded companies can help. For example, NasalGuard Airborne Particle Blocker, an electrostatic topical nasal gel that prevents airborne particles from entering the nose, created the “Breathe Easier Healthcare Workers Donation Program.” The firm offers free nasal gel to any healthcare professional who’d like to try it. Requests can be sent via www.NasalGuard.com. “NasalGuard is drug-free and safe for children, the elderly, pregnant or nursing women, and those concerned about potential drug interactions with other medications,” says Kanika Wahi, a biomedical engineer and co-inventor of the micriofiltration technology. “As people take protective measures to help themselves during this time, NasalGuard is another tool in their arsenal of prevention. We at NasalGuard are proud to support the frontline healthcare workers as well as anyone else in need of preventative products.” The company has long believed in giving back and has donated thousands of units of NasalGuard Airborne Particle Blocker nationally and internationally through a number of well-known charitable organizations. GUIDELINES FOR HOMETOWN EVENTS:
I HAVE A DREAM... Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech, which was delivered to a crowd of 250,000 in Washington, D.C., on August 28, 1963, is one of the most memorable moments of Dr. King’s life. In the 17-minute monologue, Dr. King called for an end to racism. Interestingly, the “dream” component of the speech wasn’t in the original draft. Gospel singer Mahalia Jackson reportedly coached Dr. King to tell the listeners “about the dream.” GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Emergency Help for Hungry Pets DEAR PAW’S CORNER: So many people are out of work right now, and there is little to no assistance available to them just to pay rent, much less buy food for themselves. I am wondering, how will people be able to feed their pets in this desperate situation? -- Jamie G., Atlanta DEAR JAMIE: One of the bright spots in this pandemic is the way that individuals have responded to help each other and fill the needs of tens of thousands -- maybe millions -- of pets. Shelters in many parts of the country have opened or expanded food pantries for pets to help owners keep their dogs and cats healthy and fed. Napa County, California, for example, transformed two empty shipping containers into a community pet pantry offering free supplies this summer. (Search for “Napa County’s new pet pantry” to learn more.) In Tuscon, Cody’s Friends, a charity started in 2010 by a 10-year-old boy, has seen a huge surge of demand for pet food and is distributing to area shelters and clinics as fast as possible (https://codysfriends.org). And in North Carolina, the Davidson County Animal Alliance extended its holiday pet food collection drive because there was so much need. If you are struggling to pay for pet food for any reason, contact your local shelter first and ask if there is a pet food program available. You may not be able to pick up food directly from a shelter; it may be distributed at a different location. Contact local food banks, churches and municipal offices. And of course, search online or on Facebook for these services as well. Also, if you’ve been waiting to donate food, pet supplies or cash to a local shelter or charity, now is your moment to shine. Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc. REAL ESTATE

TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE AND CONNECTED DURING A MOVE (NAPSI) — Planning a move can be stressful, but planning a move in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic brings a new set of challenges. Stay safe and connected with some smart pre-move planning; here are some tips: Follow Approved Protocols — If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches. Safely Stay Connected — New work-from-home protocols and online schooling mean reliable Internet connectivity is more important than ever. Prior to your move, SmartMove can connect you to your local provider and help arrange new Touchless Installs that let you safely connect your tech services yourself. Cable companies deliver equipment with step-by-step activation information so you can set up your system on your own, or with support over the phone, online, through chat functionality or video tutorials. In most cases, no technician will need to enter your home. Keep in Touch & Maintain Daily Routines — You may be staying in more, but don’t forget to take a break from unpacking boxes. Use your new online connection to find delivery services to help stock your pantry and fridge and refill prescriptions. Your new house will feel more like home if you take time to watch your favorite shows, maintain your exercise program or explore online courses that can help you discover new talents or resume old hobbies. Don’t forget to connect with friends through group video chats or viewing parties—you can even take your friends and family on a virtual tour of your new place!

Fai rport Community Helps Durf’s Win Pandemic Relief BY AMANDA DUDEK
I
f you live in the Fairport area, then you have probably eaten at Durf’s. This popular, local family restaurant has been cooking breakfast and lunch for Fairport families for over 40 years. Kathy Lloyd is the proud 2nd generation owner of Durf’s, family owned and operated since 1976. Leading a true community institution, Lloyd likely not only knows your name, but she may also be cooking your order before you have even been seated! When the effects of pandemic shutdowns and limitations threatened to close the doors of this beloved local eatery for good, the Fairport community knew they had to do something about it. Kathy Lloyd was very concerned that Durf’s may not be able to weather takeout only and reduced capacity dining. The thought of permanently closing broke her heart. “My dad started our restaurant as just a counter around the cookline at Seabreeze,” she shared, noting that her father, who suffered a serious stroke at the beginning of 2020, decided to move Durf’s to Fairport in 1978. “My family still lives here; Fairport people are my family.” “The pandemic changed everything,” she continued. “We had to learn how to operate our restaurant as a high-volume takeout only. It was a whole different world! Then, when we were allowed to have limited dine-in, it became even more of a challenge.” The Fairport community, however, was not about to let Durf’s go without a fight. “They have rallied around us every time we struggled,” shared Lloyd. “They have always been there for us. They comment encouraging words on social media. They would support us at their comfort level, whether dine-in or takeout. A customer even started a GoFundMe page for us. It’s hard to put the huge amount of support we have received into words.”
me because she needed my information and participation. I didn’t know we had won though. She drove all the way to my home with the owner of Barstool Sports on video chat to record him telling me we won!” Lloyd, who describes herself as “a kind of shy person,” was overwhelmed with Durf ’s Family Restaurant, Fairport gratitude. “I was just in tears and humbled, completely humbled,” she said. “Barstool Sports is going to pay our restaurant’s lease until COVID-19 is over and our business is able to return to regular operation. The community, all of their support and joy for us, it is just amazing.” Well-aware of the struggle many businesses are still facing, Lloyd offers these words of encouragement: “We have to go day by day,” she said. “We also have to support each other in any way we can. Don’t stop fighting. Keep looking for ways to get through this.”
“We also have to support each other in any way we can. Don’t stop fighting. Keep looking for ways to get through this!”
“I always knew my family - Kathy Lloyd restaurant was a very special place,” she added. “I didn’t realize just how big our support was, and I am so humbled by it. Our customers are a part of our family. We know many of them by name. It has been an honor to carry on my dad’s legacy. I can only offer my thanks and appreciation to Barstool Sports, my family, and our Fairport community.” The Durfee Family (Kathy Lloyd third from left)
Then, during the handful of days between the time when this writer requested an interview with Lloyd and the day we actually spoke, something incredible happened. Lloyd’s niece, Daphne Croop, who in the family tradition had also worked at Durf’s, entered the family restaurant in a contest run by BarstoolSports.com. “She took the initiative to write a story and send it in,” explained Lloyd. “She then had 24 hours to put together a video of video clips from the community in support of Durf’s and send it in.” The response Croop received was overwhelming. “Daphne reached out to the Fairport community, and they sent her so many clips she couldn’t even use them all!” exclaimed Lloyd. “We won! My niece was trying to keep this a secret to surprise me, but she had to tell

WORK AT HOME IN COMFORT AND SAFETY (NAPSI) — According to Darrell Smith, executive director of the International Window Film Association, window film makes a lot of sense for homeowners eager to save money on their energy bills. “Solar-control films can block as much as 80 percent of the solar heat coming through glass into a building, decrease the heat load on the air-conditioning system and reduce energy costs,” Smith says. With more people working and studying from home, window film allows in abundant natural sunlight while blocking 99 percent of the sun’s harmful UV rays to better protect the skin (from possible cancer) and eyes (from cataract development), while reducing the fading of floors and furnishings. Smith estimates that 40 to 60 percent of color fading is caused by UV exposure. Windows may also be upgraded for safety, as window film helps to hold glass pieces together if the window is impacted and broken. For even a 3,000 square foot home, window film may be installed in a day or less with minimal disruption. Window film installers clean the glass before installation, keep the work space clean and practice safe contact as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control. Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in my necessity (make request). There are none who can withstand your power. Holy Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us, who have recourse to Thee. (3 times). Holy Mother, I place this in your hands. (3 times). Say this prayer 3 days and then you must publish it and it will be granted to you. P.G.

Making that easy is one restaurant chain that’s having a year-round love affair with Latin and Hispanic cuisine. Long known for its authentic Tex-Mex roots, Church’s Chicken®/Texas Chicken® has spent years championing the commemorative period—which runs from September15 to October 15th—on a global stage. The first Hispanic influence on the company’s menu was the jalapeño pepper—the very first side item ever offered at the restaurant chain. The peppers were added to the menu due to a San Antonio tradition of squeezing their juice over various foods to give them a south-of-theborder style “kick” of heat and spice. The restaurant’s sister brand, Texas Chicken, features the Mexicana Burger on menus worldwide. This tasty chicken burger is a fiesta of tastes and textures, with a juicy hand-battered chicken breast fillet that’s topped “taco style” with cheese, fresh lettuce, tomato, spicy mayo, crunchy tortilla chips and chopped onions.
