AS TEMPERATURES DROP, CHECK TIRE PRESSURE MORE OFTEN (NAPSI)—You may notice, when the weather turns colder, the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) light on your dashboard lights up more frequently. The Car Care Council recommends checking your tire pressure regularly during the winter to help keep the TPMS light off and your vehicle safe. “It’s typical at this time of year for motorists to get TPMS warnings and then get worried about their tires,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “Often drivers will see this in the morning when it’s coldest. If the temperature warms, the light could turn off but it’s likely that tires will still be a few pounds per square inch (PSI) underinflated. This is why it’s important to check tire pressure regularly.” According to the U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association, for every 10 degree drop in temperature, tire pressure decreases one to two PSI. Checking the tire pressure is important for vehicle safety, tire life and gas mileage. Incorrect tire pressure can lower gas mileage by 0.3 percent for every one PSI drop in pressure of all four tires and improve fuel efficiency by up to 3.3 percent when the correct tire pressure is maintained. “Tire pressure should be checked at least monthly. It is important to note that newer cars with tire pressure monitoring systems may not alert you until the tire is significantly underinflated, so you may want to check it more frequently,” said White. “It is important to check tire pressure whenever there is a significant weather change and more often during the winter months.” The Car Care Council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers. Get support or talk it out. Speaking about what you are going through and getting reassurance from other people can work wonders to strengthen resilience. When the desire to quit sneaks up, you can consult with a friend or consider a support group. For example, taking a group class at the gym may be a more effective motivational tool than working out solo.

We’ve Been Busy! Our local family-owned business continues to grow and evolve in 2024 and we want to take this opportunity to share with you all we have going on to start the year.

Printing We’re very excited to announce our long-term investment in new printing equipment that will arrive in February. You might also notice the colors, registration and overall quality of our printing improve. We’re investing in us, so that we can invest in you for many years to come. A New Edition Coming this spring we’ll be adding a new weekly tenth edition in Wayne/Ontario counties. It will be distributed in the Macedon, Palmyra, Newark, Clifton Springs and Phelps communities. BUDGET-FRIENDLY WAYS TO UPGRADE A LANDSCAPE Plant to create privacy. Homeowners spent more time at home than ever before during the pandemic, and some might have grown tired of seeing what their neighbors are up to. Fencing might be the first solution homeowners consider when looking to make their landscapes more private. But new fencing installation can be expensive, costing homeowners between $1,667 and $4,075 on average, according to BobVila.com. A more costly and natural solution is to plant trees around the perimeter. Speak with a local landscaping professional, who can survey the property to see which trees might thrive and provide the privacy homeowners want.

DID YOU KNOW? Wedding insurance can provide couples who are about to tie the knot with some peace of mind on their big days. Many wedding venues require couples carry liability coverage in the case of accidents, injuries or incidents. But wedding insurance policies may even surprise couples with regard to what they cover. Each policy is different, and couples may be able to customize wedding insurance policies to cover a host of items. Many policies cover couples in the wake of cancellations or postponements due to weather, damage to the facility or even a change of heart on the part of the couple holding the policy. But some policies may provide coverage for couples should their photographers and/or caterers fail to appear. Policies may also cover lost, stolen or damaged items, including equipment rentals, bridal growns, jewelry, and/or gifts. Couples should speak with their wedding venue representative to determine if the venue offers extended coverage and ultimately compare those offerings to policy estimates they receive on their own. Leisure activities may be widely viewed as fun ways to fill up free time, but the benefits of leisure activities extend beyond beating boredom. A 2011 analysis published in the journal BBA Molecular Basis of Disease found that leisure activities have a positive impact on cognitive function and dementia. The analysis, conducted by researchers with the Aging Research Center in Stockholm who examined various studies regarding the relationship between certain activities and cognitive function, defined leisure activity as the voluntary use of free time for activities outside the home. After retirement, leisure time constitutes a large part of many retirees’ lives, and finding ways to fill that time is more beneficial than merely avoiding boredom. The researchers behind the study concluded that the existing research is insufficient to draw any firm conclusions regarding the effects of certain types of leisure activities on the risk for dementia and cognitive decline, though they did note that multi-domain cognitive training has the potential to improve cognitive function in healthy older adults and slow decline in affected individuals. A multi-domain approach to cognitive training involves memory, reasoning, problem-solving, and map reading, among other activities. Aging adults who embrace activities that require the use of such skills may find that they’re not only finding stimulating ways to fill their free time, but increasing their chances of long-term cognitive health as well.

Here’s a Tip • Sources who know say that if you drop a marble (clean glass) in your tea kettle, it will prevent it from scaling. • Like to use paper towels to dry your clean hands? Set them aside to dry, then you can use them for cleaning with glass cleaner or other solutions. • Use a shower curtain cut or folded in half under baby’s highchair to make cleaning up the floor easier. * Air-popped popcorn is better for you and healthier. If you have an air popper, you’ll also have a jar of popcorn kernels. Keep them in the refrigerator or even the freezer. You can use them straight from the fridge, and the bonus is that you’ll have less unpopped kernels and bigger, fluffier popcorn. -- E.M. in Wisconsin (c) 2024 King Features Synd., Inc.

Hooray for the Medical Aftercare by Rochester Regional Health Elizabeth Browning’s poem “How Do I Love Thee” was written in 1850 as a love poem for another person. I want to share the ways I love what Rochester Regional Health (RRH) has done to help my wife Dianne (81) since a recent six-day stay at Rochester General Hospital for heart-related issues. Since coming home from the hospital, the follow-up care by RRH has been Tremendous. RRH provided a slew of medical equipment, such as a blood pressure device, oxygen meter reader, great scale commode, and two four-prong walkers for use upstairs and downstairs in our home. RRH has provided me a Telemedicine number to call in her vitals. RRH provided a 24/7 nurse contact for medical issues. There have been periodic visits of physical therapists, nurses, and a social worker. RRH has been God-sent with all the follow-up being provided for Dianne, my dear wife of 59 years. So, “How Do I Love RRH?” A whole lot and Thank You from the bottom of my heart. Love, Joe and Dianne Borzelliere

Driving With A Dog In Your Lap Driving under the influence of drugs/ alcohol, speeding, running stop lights/ signs are several illegal potentials that could cause serious harm to a driver or passengers or the same to those in another vehicle. PLEASE help me understand why drivers can navigate one handed while a dog sits in their lap? Driving with a dog in your lap may impede the proper functioning of an air bag/seat belt if in a collision, which may be a significant hazard to the dog, the driver and/or others in the vehicle. PLEASE tell these reckless drivers they’re a danger to themselves, their pets and others. Wake up and keep your eyes on the road and not your darn dog!

TIPS TO HELP REALIZE YOUR GOALS THIS YEAR Make note of potential obstacles. Recognizing potential hurdles in advance of their appearance can help you overcome these obstacles and stay the course toward achieving your goals. For example, men and women hoping to lose weight can look ahead to occasions that might compromise their efforts, such as a loved one’s wedding or backyard barbecue. Recognizing these obstacles in advance gives people a chance to develop a plan to overcome them. In the weight loss example, men and women can choose vegetarian options from reception menus or resolve to avoid alcohol, which tends to be high in calories.

Don’t Miss The Sounds Of The Game!

What Dosage of NSAIDs Is Safe to Take After a Gastric Sleeve?

We Listen More... To Help You Hear Better! 1331 East Victor Rd. • Victor • (585) 398-1210 513 W. Union St. • Newark • (315) 573-7844

---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have had weight-loss surgery, specifically an adjustable lap band that was revised to a gastric sleeve in 2018. I have been given and read conflicting recommendations regarding the use of NSAIDs following these procedures. I have read that taking a low dose (400 mg) is considered safe. I have also read and been told to take the children’s liquid form at an adult dosage rather than the tablets. I am a 57-year-old female. I have largely avoided taking NSAIDs for years, but I have developed osteoarthritis and find that I am taking them more often (400 mg once daily, one to two times a week at most). I do ensure that I take them with food and also take a Pepcid whenever I take ibuprofen. -- A.W. ANSWER: There are several types of weight-loss (bariatric) surgery, and the best evidence that I found among those who had a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass shows up to a 70% increase in the relative risk of developing peptic ulcers after surgery. This sounds pretty terrible, but it actually means that in an average time span of four years after surgery, 1.4% of people who didn’t take any NSAIDs got an ulcer, while 2.4% of the group that had the greatest amount of NSAID use developed an ulcer. However, the same study showed that only 0.2% of patients who underwent a sleeve gastrectomy developed an ulcer, and the use of NSAIDs did not significantly increase this number. Finally, other studies have shown that medicines like famotidine (Pepcid) reduce the risk of ulcers by about half when used long-term. NSAIDs always have risks, but for a person with a gastric sleeve, the risks of lowdose ibuprofen are modest and need to be weighed against the benefits for a person’s quality of life.

THE BENEFITS OF BUILDING A STRONG CORE Make daily life easier: Individuals may not realize it, but their cores play a vital role in performing a great number of daily tasks. Core muscles are activated when doing everything from taking out the trash to getting dressed. If those muscles are weak, the cumulative effect of that weakness can add up and contribute to aches, pains and other health problems. Strong core muscles make daily tasks easier and less taxing on the body, providing both short- and long-term benefits.

Simple Solutions to Combat Winter Skin Sensitivity Hydrate Inside and Out. Use a humidifier to keep skin hydrated during the dry months and be sure to lather on moisturizer. Natural moisturizers like coconut oil and shea butter can act as protective barriers against harsh elements, sealing in moisture. In addition to hydrating on the outside, it is just as important to stay hydrated on the inside. By drinking water throughout the day, your skin can stay healthy and moisturized. Avoid Toxins, Specifically Allergens and Irritants. Choose moisturizers and skin care products that don’t contain common irritants, and opt for mild cleansers and moisturizers that are specifically labeled for sensitive skin. Castor oil is another moisturizer alternative that is natural and can be used on both the face and body. Layer Up. Lock in moisture and protect your skin from wind, rain and snow by wearing layers whenever you venture outside. The skin on your neck, face and hands is thinner than other areas of the body and therefore more sensitive to the effects of winter weather. Thermals, scarves and gloves can keep you warm and protect your skin from the cold, dry air.

SAFELY AVOID POTENTIAL WINTER HAZARDS Venturing outdoors for winter fun may be enticing, but never put your health at risk for the sake of fun. The Mayo Clinic says hypothermia is a medical emergency that occurs when the body loses heat faster than it can produce heat, causing a dangerously low body temperature. Wear appropriate clothing to prevent hypothermia, which may not produce any initial symptoms. If shivering stops or confusion and slurred speech set in, severe hypothermia is in effect and a person should be moved indoors and gently warmed. Mild hypothermia is also possible indoors, typically when the elderly spend several hours in poorly heated homes.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Kennel or Sitter? Traveling Owner Can’t Decide DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I am traveling for business in a few days and will be gone for just over a week. Because I can’t bring my dog Jasper with me, I’m trying to decide whether to board him at a nearby kennel or hire a dog-sitter instead. I’m worried about him contracting that respiratory illness that has been affecting dogs lately. What’s your recommendation? -- Todd G., via email DEAR TODD: Both of those options are fine -- as long as you take a few minutes to investigate both the kennel and interview the dog-sitter. Schedule a tour of the kennel facility so you can see the conditions Jasper will live in and talk to the staff. Has the kennel had any dogs develop kennel cough or other transmitted viruses recently? How often do they disinfect the kennels and play areas? How much exercise do the dogs get? Likewise, interview the dog-sitter in person, or over Zoom. How often will they visit Jasper -- once or twice a day? How often will Jasper get walks and play time? Will Jasper be the only dog being walked, or will he be part of a group of dogs? Is the dog-sitter insured, in case of accidents? Once you’ve decided which caregiver to place Jasper with, be sure they have your contact information in case of emergencies, and details about Jasper’s diet, type of food and medications. Place an article of clothing that has your scent on it in Jasper’s bag so that he is more comfortable whether staying at home or sleeping at the kennel. After you return, keep an eye on Jasper to make sure he’s healthy. If he is coughing or sneezing frequently, has a lot of nasal or eye discharge, and seems lethargic or uninterested in food, take him to the vet for an evaluation.

Resilience in the Face of Adversity: Julie Bagley’s Journey BY SUZIE WELLS

F

or Julie Bagley, single mother of four in Honeoye Falls, “My kids are my life.” Committed to community involvement, including the development of the middle grades’ cheer program in HFL, Julie says, “Helping out makes me tick.” A natural giver, she now finds herself on the other side, requesting and accepting help as she faces the toughest challenge of her life. Just three days after she dropped her twins off for their freshman year at SUNY Geneseo, intense abdominal pain sent her to the emergency room. There, she learned she had a significant tumor in her small intestine. Emergency surgery followed, and Julie was diagnosed with a rare, aggressive double expressor non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in her intestines, stomach, colon, and liver. Since the tumor was already Stage 4, she has endured aggressive chemo over the past few months, with one more round before a PET Scan on the 26th, at which time there will be four options: 1. The cancer is all gone and she’s completely done with treatment, 2. The mass on her stomach, liver, and colon have all shrunk, so they’ll pursue radiation on her small intestine, 3. Her team will decide to keep going with chemo, or 4. Worst case scenario, she says, she’ll need a bone marrow transplant. With zero symptoms prior to her diagnosis, she remains pragmatic. She insists, “I have a lot more to do in life. Not beating it is not an option,” so she tries to stick to the facts with each challenge. For instance, she knows she has a treatment next week, so this week, she grocery shops, preps meals, and takes care of things she knows she won’t have energy to tackle right after treatment. She laughs that she hadn’t used Instacart before, but now she’s used it twice. Working full-time in technology sales and moonlighting as a bartender once a week to get out and socialize while earning additional income, Julie says, “the [disability/health care] system is really messed up.” Fully disabled, unable to work due to her treatments, she says she faces such a financial burden, receiving federal assistance of only $170/week as she battles for her life. Winter on the Green coordinators Bridget Blodgett and Wendy Harrison decided to revive the fundraiser for Julie, an active volunteer at the event in years past, benefiting various deserving families in the community. Julie lights up talking about those events, at which she and other moms coordinate a night of fun, with delicious food, drinks, desserts, raffles, a Chinese auction, silent auctions, and overall community fun. Julie’s amazed at the list of this year’s incredibly generous donations.

community is always so quick to help out. She says there are so many people with problems, so many people with issues beyond the scope of what one person can deal with, and the community comes together to support them. The Bagley family moved to HFL ten years ago and it’s been such an amazing experience, Julie wishes she moved there ten years earlier. She says HFL is such a strong community, with great schools and incredible parents. “It takes a village.” She hopes the next news she can tell the community is that she’s beat the cancer, it’s all gone and she’s won. As she still battles, Julie says, “So much changes so quickly – of course the diagnosis is a big surprise – and everything changes.” To stay strong through the challenges of treatments and appointments, Julie focuses on “the little positives every day.” She advises, “Focus on one positive goal each day. It doesn’t have to be huge.” She chuckles, “Today, I cleaned out one of the girl’s closets. It makes you feel human, like you don’t have to face huge challenges all at once.” She also says her biggest advice is to accept what people offer and ask for help when you need it. She says, “They’re not pitying you. They want to help.” Even if you just want company when you’re feeling lonely, ask for someone or accept when someone offers, she says. Julie says she’s usually a better giver than receiver, so this has been hard. She encourages that even if it feels like you’re burdening others, you’re not. Your friends want to help, they want to be there for you, even if they have their own lives and challenges. Julie’s story is one of resilience, community support, and the unwavering determination to overcome challenges, inspiring others to find strength in the face of adversity. According to Julie’s friend, Marcye Bears, organizer of her GoFundMe page, “Julie is a fun-loving, outgoing, glass half-full type of person,” always ready to support others even in her own tough times. RELIEVE STRESS THROUGHOUT THE DAY Walk away. The APA notes that taking a break from a stressor is one of a handful of healthy techniques that research has indicated is a successful way to reduce stress, both in the short- and long-term. If a project at work is proving especially stressful, step away for a short period of time to do something else, whether it’s to go for a brief walk or converse with a coworker about something unrelated to the project. Avoiding the stress entirely, especially if it’s a work project or a bill that must be paid, is not the answer. But a short break from the stressor and thinking about it can provide a new perspective and time to calm down.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Early cosmetic surgeons used a procedure known as paraffin wax rhinoplasty, in which they would inject hot liquid wax into a patient’s nose and mold it into the desired shape. Not only was this dangerous, but, no surprise, it really didn’t work.

TIPS FOR REALIZING GOALS IN THE YEAR AHEAD Expect setbacks. If realizing resolutions was easy, the success rate would be greater than 8 percent. Setbacks are inevitable, so don’t allow them to derail your efforts. Even if setbacks occur when you’re well on your way to success, regroup and get back on track without getting down on yourself.
