FACTORS THAT IMPACT AUTO INSURANCE PREMIUMS Auto insurance rates vary from person to person, even though it may seem like the offerings are the same. But no two drivers are the same, and certain factors may be affecting drivers’ auto insurance premiums without the motorists even realizing it. Recognizing which situations can increase or lower costs can help drivers get the best rates and coverage needed. Although it can be tempting to reduce the price of insurance by choosing lower amounts of coverage, there are other ways to make insurance more affordable. • Move. Insurers typically look at where a person lives when calculating rates. Those people who live in highly populated, urban areas likely will have higher premiums than others who live in more rural towns. That’s because greater population density often translates into more people on the road - and a greater chance for insurance claims due to fender benders or theft. By moving, a person may be able to cut rates. • Gender and age are factors. One can’t step into a time machine, but it’s helpful to know that growing a little older can lower insurance premiums. The financial advice source Money Crashers say that young men usually incur higher rates than young women because statistically men get into more accidents. However, as a person moves into his or her senior years, the roles reverse. Older women may see higher rates than men the same age. • Keep make and model in mind. The type of vehicle driven can affect insurance premiums. Certain insurance carriers will increase premiums on vehicles that are more susceptible to damage. Flashy sports cars or those that do not score as highly on vehicle safety ratings calculated by industry experts may result in high premiums. Vehicles that are desirable to car thieves also may cost more to insure. Researching vehicles prior to purchase and checking the rates for those cars or trucks with insurance companies can help keep costs low. • Commuters may pay more. Individuals who use a car for business or frequent commuting may pay more than people who drive less because statistically there is a greater risk for an accident, says State Farm. Reducing commute times can lower premiums. • Tie the knot. Insure.com says married couples have been found to be less of a risk to insurance providers statistically than those who are single. A study by the National Institutes of Health found that single drivers were twice as likely to be in an auto accident as married drivers. Combining policies also can help married people save. • Follow the rules of the road. Drivers who have moving violations, drink and drive or engage in otherwise risky behavior behind the wheel may see their rates soar. Insurance companies weigh factors such as driving record, age, locality, and more when assessing premium costs. Drivers have some room to get lower rates by knowing the factors that determine their premiums.

DID YOU KNOW? The Ford Motor Company’s Model T was offered in several styles, not unlike how vehicles of today are offered in various models. Among the Model T styles available was a two-seat runabout, which can be considered a precursor to the coupe style popular today, and a seven-seat town car, which might be considered an ancestor of today’s SUV, at least with regard to passenger capacity. While prospective Model T drivers had some options when choosing which Model T they wanted to purchase, between 1913 and 1925 the car was produced only in black. The Model T engine was a 4-cylinder engine that generated 20 horsepower. To put that latter figure into perspective, many of today’s riding lawn mowers are 20 horsepower, and some commercial lawn riding mowers provide as much as 40 horsepower. While car dealers might not sell too many cars featuring 4-cylinder, 20 horsepower engines today, historical estimates suggest that more than 15 million Model T’s were built and sold between 1908 and 1927, the last year the car was produced.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

This Rapid Heartbeat Appears Normal on EKG ---

Resolving To Hear Better? Listening more in the new year. Not missing out on the important moments.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I had symptoms of lightheadedness, so my doctor ordered an EKG and sent me to a cardiologist. They did a heart monitor for a week and said I have inappropriate sinus tachycardia but that I don’t need any treatment. I’m still having symptoms. What can I do? -- B.V. ANSWER: Inappropriate sinus tachycardia is an uncommon diagnosis, most often seen in women in their 30s. The heart rate is fast (“tachycardia”), but on an EKG it appears normal, meaning it comes from the sino-atrial node, the natural pacemaker of the heart, hence “sinus.” The average heart rate must be over 90 for 24 hours. It’s important to be sure there isn’t another cause for the tachycardia, such as elevated thyroid levels, fever, volume depletion (dehydration) or anemia. The symptoms may continue for months or even years. Common symptoms include the lightheadedness you felt, but may also include palpitations, shortness of breath, dizziness and decreased ability to exercise. The diagnosis can sometimes be confused with POTS (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome), where the heart rate dramatically increases with changing to an upright position. A tilt-table test is the diagnostic tool for POTS. If there is no other reason for sinus tachycardia, then medication may be used to reduce symptoms. A beta blocker is the usual first choice, but there are others available. I found some more information at https://tinyurl.com/ ISTheart that may be useful for you.

Warm, friendly environment. Make sure you don’t miss a single word.

Welcome New Patients... ... To Our New Location!

hair loss. My hair has always been long and thick, but it is coming out in handfuls. I can only think it must be due to my blood pressure medicines. I’ve been taking amlodipine and lisinopril for years. I’m in good health and 90 years young. -- M. ANSWER: It is unlikely that the hair loss is due to either amlodipine or lisinopril. Neither of these are well described to provoke hair loss, and if a medicine is going to do that, it usually does within a few months. The most common cause of hair loss in a 90-year-old woman is female pattern hair loss, in which the hair loss is mostly on the front and top of the scalp. However, there are several causes of hair loss, and a dermatologist may be helpful in determining the cause and treatment. Please don’t stop taking your blood pressure medicine.

Colder Weather: How To Manage Your Blood Pressure & Health High blood pressure means that the force of blood pushing through your body is too strong. That pressure puts a strain on your arteries, which carry blood from your heart to the rest of your body. In colder weather, blood vessels constrict more than normal, which raises blood pressure. • Practice healthy habits: Being physically active, eating healthy & limiting alcohol can be critical to managing your high blood pressure year round, especially during fall and winter. Try to get up and move for at least 30 minutes each day. As the weather changes, modify your exercise routine to include raking leaves, shoveling snow or walking indoors at a mall. • Measure and monitor your blood pressure regularly. Blood pressure monitors are inexpensive and can be purchased at pharmacies and other stores. Many supermarkets and pharmacies have machines that take and record your blood pressure. More than one in three Americans have high blood pressure. To measure, monitor and maintain your blood pressure all year round and learn more about this disease, please visit MeasureUpPressureDown.com.

* If you have a steel or metal door, stick a few magnets on the inside for a handy spot to attach reminders and other notes. If your door is wood, just attach a piece of corkboard to a strip of the door. With pushpins, it works the same way. * “If you find a pretty bottle of lotion, you can refill it when it runs out. I add a little bit of essential oils to my store-brand lotion.” -- G.E. in California * Remove white rings on wood tables with mayo! Slather a spoonful of mayonnaise on the spot and let it stand for an hour or so. Wipe clean. Repeat as necessary. * Use nail polish in bright colors to mark the settings on your washer. The nail polish doesn’t wear off like a marker might. * Got unmatched socks? Save them for the grandkids to use for hand puppets. You can help them sew buttons on, and use yarn for hair. A barrette can be glued or sewn on for a nose. * “Here’s a DIY softener sheet for the dryer. Just cut up an old shirt into small squares about the size of your hand. Use a sealable jar and add liquid fabric softener and water in equal parts, and then add all the squares to the liquid. When you move clothes from the washer into the dryer, take a piece, squeeze it out and toss in the dryer. They are reusable -- afterward, just put it back in the jar!” -- D.R. in Florida

To all our readers, if you can be sure to keep clean your walkways and areas around your mailboxes, that is a huge help!

Billieve! Congratulations to the Buffalo uffalo uff alo Bills! Although they didn’t win the he AFC Championship that we were hoping for, they had an amazing season! Thank you for providing excitement and entertainment to an otherwise dreary few months. Thank you… To all those who check on their neighbors, run errands, write notes, and make phone calls to those who are housebound due to COVID or bad weather. It means a lot. Hats off Hats off to our GVPS Adult Carriers and Postal Workers that get our beloved Penny Saver delivered week in and week out during these Winter months laced with Covid.

How ‘bout them Browns! and Bills! A few decades ago, the Cleveland Browns were an extremely popular and followed team in Western New York, for a couple of reasons: they were pretty good and fun to watch; their games were picked up in the Rochester area and hence grew a fan base. Wonderful that they bested the Steelers two weeks in a row to make the playoffs. And the Bills almost making the Super Bowl was quite an accomplishment for such a young team. Both teams’ futures look bright!

Vaccines So sad to see the cupboard bare when it comes to vaccines. The past administration just could not come to grips with reality and now we continue to pay the price. Stay safe everyone and where your mask!

to change the trajectory.” Strange that NY, California and Chicago all magically decide to open back up? Some might even say American businesses and lives and educations were ruined for politcal gains. At least we won’t have mean tweets.

It’s going to be a long four years. The first week in office was a bust. Putting thousands out of work and the environment at risk by ending Keystone, opening the southern border and worst of all the answer for CV-19 is, “nothing we can do

Cheers! Cheers to Section 5 and the decision to have Winter sports at the High School level. If the teams cooperate with the Covid rules, they should be able to enjoy their sports!

BRICK HOMES FIGHT FIRES THE LONGEST (NAPSI)—Firefighters report that it takes about an hour and a half for a fire to breach a brick home-as compared to fiber cement in under an hour and vinyl siding in just minutes. Choosing brick exteriors to protect their own firehouses, firefighters say brick homes help slow the spread, offering the extra few minutes to help save lives and property as this brief video shows. While the International Residential Code (IRC) does not require cladding on singlefamily homes to have a fire rating, the International Building Code (IBC) acknowledges that fired-clay brick has tested to provide a minimum one-hour fire resistance rating alone, regardless of backing material. This is something that synthetic materials—such as fiber cement—cannot claim. Primarily made of clay, brick is classified as a noncombustible material that will not burn, melt or combust. In a one-hour severe fire test conducted independently for the Brick Industry Association (BIA), vinyl siding burned after only 18 minutes, fiber cement failed within one hour and fired-clay brick withstood the flames after one hour. The test was conducted in accordance with ASTM E119, the Standard Test Methods for Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials. Learn More: BIA is the nationally recognized authority on clay brick construction representing the nation’s distributors and manufacturers of clay brick and suppliers of related products. CHALLENGES OF GOING REMOTE WITH YOUR BUSINESS COMMUNICATION: Communication issues between remote workers can be an easy fix. Even businesses that are facing sudden and forced transitions to remote workerplaces can utilize instant messaging apps like Slack to facilitate immediate communication between employees. This can drive greater efficiency and promote the sense of community among staff that many companies are proud to have fostered.

HOW TO COMBAT FOUR PET PEEVES AROUND THE HOUSE

1. Never Enough Outlets: The average family charges up to 12 devices a day. With connectivity more prevalent than ever, the demand for convenient charging options is at an all-time high. The adorne Pop-Out Outlet from Legrand features three standard receptacles for added power and can disappear into the wall when not in use. Plus, its tamper-resistant plugs will keep children safe. Now you can simultaneously charge phones, tablets and laptops with an outlet made to maximize charging needs. 2. Lights Carelessly Being Left On: Constantly reminding people to turn off the bedroom lights? You can install motion sensors that automatically turn lights on when someone enters the room and shut lights off when the room is no longer occupied. 3. Phone Charger Mysteriously Disappearing: Scouring your home for a phone charger can be a thing of the past when you replace standard outlets with an instant, cord- and clutter-free way to charge phones, such as the new-to-market Wireless Charger from the radiant Collection.

4. Lack of Light at Night: Make the walk to the bathroom or the nursery at night a little brighter by installing night lights in hallways, kitchens and children’s rooms. Some night lights even offer adjustable light levels or can convert to flashlights. Two attractive solutions can be found in the radiant and adorne Collections by Legrand. For a home with more traditional aesthetics, the radiant Collection offers a Night Light with Two Tamper-Resistant Outlets. It features five adjustable light levels and an optional louver for additional light-level control. For a more modern and design-savvy look, there’s the one from the adorne Collection. It provides a soft glow and with ambient light level sensors, so it’s visible only in dark spaces.

2. HISTORY: When did the Great Fire of London take place?

A few simple switches around the house can help you have more control over your home’s lights and electronics. While you’re improving your place, you may care to consider adorne appbased lighting control options, designed to provide solutions that offer whole-house control with the touch of a button. Homeowners who have both Legrand smart lighting systems and Voice Control−enabled devices from Google or Amazon can now power and dim lights simply by saying phrases like “OK, Google, turn on the porch lights” and “Alexa, dim the living room to 50 percent” without needing to reach for a phone, tablet, or light switch. Say “I

You” to your Community: Shop Local for Valentine’s Day! By Amanda Dudek

I

t is no secret that 2020 left many local businesses struggling. In fact, in its September 2020 Economic Impact Report, popular review platform, Yelp, reported that 163,735 businesses had shut down by August 31st, 60% of them never to reopen. According to data from the Census Bureau’s Annual Survey of Entrepreneurs, employers with fewer than 100 workers account for 98.2% of all businesses. The clear majority, these “small” businesses are the backbone of our communities. “American business is overwhelmingly small business,” states the Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council. That they are in such desperate straits is concerning, a fact with which many Americans agree, so much so that the plight of local businesses has kickstarted a shop local trend. According to Mint Personal Finance, a personal financial management company, 1 in 5 consumers were focused on shopping small businesses in the winter of 2020, and one third of shoppers bought more gift cards from these businesses. Heading into 2021, the trend has remained strong. Red Egg Marketing, a Colorado marketing agency, found that a resounding 83% of American consumers would prefer to purchase local products over national products, and 84% were willing to spend a bit more to do so. The reason? A survey by Mint Personal Finance reports consumers’ primary motivation is to keep money local, followed by supporting their community and local creators, a better service experience, and supporting nonprofits. Those remaining local shops, eateries, and other establishments have and continue to survive on the loyalty and mindful spending choices each of us make every day.

companies have become shopping habits for many consumers, and as with most habits, changing these patterns will take time, mindfulness, and perhaps a few new options.

Planning a special Valentine’s Day? Try one or more of our tips, and show some extra love to local businesses while you’re at it! • Budget for local shopping. This tip is so intuitively simple it’s easy to miss. Rather than merely hoping to remember to make a purchase or find necessities locally, just add local spending dollars to your monthly budget. Then, make it a point – and a pleasure – to spend those dollars locally as you see fit! Even a modest amount will make a difference. For example, if every family in the country spent just $10 locally each month, over $9.3 billion would stay local, according to United We Stand and Civic Economics Andersonville Study of Retail Economics. • Shop your favorite local businesses online. Have you searched for your favorite boutique online? Check again! For better or for worse, COVID-19 has changed the way people shop. During shutdowns, many items were only available online as brick-and-mortars temporarily closed their doors. Even now, as more and more businesses resume some open hours, many consumers continue to appreciate the convenience of online shopping. Fortunately, one faint silver lining was that temporary closures encouraged several of local retailers to take their business online. So, before you click on an online retailer, do a quick local search instead. You might be surprised!

Does shopping local really keep that much more money in my community? Absolutely! Shopping local keeps up to 4Xs as much money in your community than shopping at chains. According to multiple sources, at least 48% of every purchase at a local business is recirculated locally compared to just 14% of chain purchases and virtually 0% from online retailer purchases. As AMIBA (American Independent Business Alliance) puts it, “Buying remotely on the web creates almost no local benefit – just a few minutes’ work for a delivery person.” The difference is clear.

Ready to Shop Local? Check out our tips! Wait. Isn’t shopping local as simple as going to a local business and making a purchase? Well, yes and no. While we certainly hope you will frequent local businesses as much as possible, we recognize that shopping with online retailers as well as opting to shop at chain

• Share, share, and share some more! One of the best ways to support local businesses you love is by word-of-mouth and by click of mouse. Share photos of the items you love and tell everyone where you got them. Take a photo of yourself enjoying local businesses and share them to your social media. Invite friends and family members to like local businesses online. And of course, share the things you love by purchasing them as gifts for the people you love. ° µ ¾ À É ° ° É Ì Ñ Ò Ñ Ò Ó °

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles On Medicare? Beware of COVID Card Scam Have you received a phone call asking if you’ve received your new “special” Medicare COVID card? Beware: There is no such thing. It’s a scam. I did receive such a call. The person on the other end asked if I’d received my new card, which I’d heard nothing about, and proceeded to try to ask me a number of questions. She claimed there are a lot of fancy benefits that come with the COVID card. In the name of research for this column, I did not hang up immediately as I usually do. Instead, I went along with the caller, listening but not providing any information. I asked where they’d gotten my name and was told they were accessing the Medicare database. I was quickly convinced it was a scam. I hung up and called the Medicare fraud line to report it. The fraud people were very glad I did. Other forms of COVID scams include offering fast eligibility for the vaccine, fake vaccine sign-up websites, fake testing and wellness kits, and fake contact tracers who want to know your Medicare card number. Fact: There is no new Medicare card for COVID. Fact: Medicare isn’t going to call you about anything unless you have called or written to them and asked them to contact you by phone. If you receive a call such as the one I got, hang up immediately and then call to report it. Call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-6334227), or HHS at 1-800-447-8477. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

CHALLENGES OF GOING REMOTE WITH YOUR BUSINESS CUSTOMER SERVICE: Ensuring customers can seamlessly connect with your business, and your customer service staff in particular, should be a priority when switching to a remote work setting. Remote customer service employees won’t have the direct access to management and fellow team members that they had when working on-site, so business owners can employ central management platforms that make it easy to access information regarding new products and services and previous interactions with and responses to customers. That access can help solve issues while reducing the likelihood of substantial lag time as customer service employees wait to hear from coworkers and managers about how to respond to certain issues. PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

How Long Can Dog Stay Outside in the Snow? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My dog loves to go outdoors, but I worry that it’s too cold and icy for her to be outside right now. I’m housebound and unable to take “Sookie” out for walks or to play in the snow. I have a fenced yard, but I can’t supervise her. My younger neighbor takes her out every morning for a few minutes, and that’s it. What can I do? -- Sara P., Bennington, Vermont DEAR SARAH: Big props to your neighbor for helping to take care of Sookie! Even on cold winter days, a few minutes outside can be uplifting for your dog. And a “relief,” if you know what I mean. If Sookie stays in the fenced yard and comes when you call her, it may be safe to let her out once or twice during the day. How long she stays out depends on her size and cold tolerance. Very small dogs should not be outside for more than a few minutes when it’s below freezing, and should be wrapped up to get warm again quickly. Medium and large dogs can tolerate longer periods. The colder the air and the more ferocious the weather, the less time they should spend outside. When your dog comes in, either from her morning walk or from the fenced yard, rub down her fur with a dry towel and check the underside of her paws for cuts and abrasions. If she is shivering when she comes in, make sure she warms up, and ask your neighbor to bring her in a little sooner. ‘BREATHE EASIER’ HEALTHCARE DONATION PROGRAM (NAPSI)—Healthcare workers on the front lines of the pandemic are in desperate need of creative solutions to the lack of personal protective gear and supplies that help block harmful airborne pathogens. But civic-minded companies can help. For example, NasalGuard Airborne Particle Blocker, an electrostatic topical nasal gel that prevents airborne particles from entering the nose, created the “Breathe Easier Healthcare Workers Donation Program.” The firm offers free nasal gel to any healthcare professional who’d like to try it. Requests can be sent via www.NasalGuard.com.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Feb. 3, 1953, French oceanographer Jacques-Yves Cousteau publishes “The Silent World,” a memoir about his time exploring the oceans. In 1950, Lord Guinness, a British patron, bought him an old British minesweeper to use for his underwater explorations. Cousteau christened it Calypso.

“NasalGuard is drug-free and safe for children, the elderly, pregnant or nursing women, and those concerned about potential drug interactions with other medications,” says Kanika Wahi, a biomedical engineer and co-inventor of the micriofiltration technology. “As people take protective measures to help themselves during this time, NasalGuard is another tool in their arsenal of prevention. We at NasalGuard are proud to support the frontline healthcare workers as well as anyone else in need of preventative products.” The company has long believed in giving back and has donated thousands of units of NasalGuard Airborne Particle Blocker nationally and internationally through a number of well-known charitable organizations.

Congratulations, Prickles the Hedgehog! A $50 donation will be made to a local animal shelter in Prickles name. Sponsored by these local businesses!
