Many people make losing weight and/orgettingfittheirNewYear’s resolutions, and the dawn of a new calendar year is often a great time to find discounts on gym memberships. According to Consumer Reports, many gyms and fitness centers, recognizing the desire people have to start the year off on a healthy foot, will greatly discount the cost of memberships in January. But signing up for a discounted gym membership on the morning of January 1 is not the only way to save money and still get fit. Prospective members willing to committo12-monthmemberships may be able to get a gym with costly initiation fees to waive that fee. In addition, e-commerce businesses like Groupon® and LivingSocial may also offer discounted memberships to area gyms through their websites. Fitness-minded people may also beeligibleforhealthclubrebates through their health insurance plans. In such instances, health insurance providers may reward policyholderswhovisitthegyma predeterminednumberoftimesin aspecifictimeframe(i.e.,50visits in six months) with rebates. Such rebates can save club members several hundred dollars per year, greatly reducing the overall cost of their gym memberships.
Flat tires and blowouts can prove both scary and inconvenient. Drivers who want to avoid such problems should routinely inspect their tires for indicators that a flat or blowout is likely to occur.

BRAIN-HEALTHY HABITS TO EMBRACE
Cognitive decline is a condition that is often associated with aging, but even middle-aged people can experience memory loss or cognition issues.
The Alzheimer’s Association says that more than five million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. By 2050, that number could rise to as high as 16 million people. More than 747,000 Canadians are living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia, says the Canadian Alzheimer’s Association.
Although there is no definitive way to prevent dementia, living a long, vibrant life may be possible by encouraging some healthy habits for the brain. It is never too late or too early to begin health and lifestyle changes.
Exercise: Becoming more active can improve brain volume, reduce risk for dementia and improve thinking and memory skills. The journal Neurology found that older people who vigorously exercise performed better on cognitive tests than others of the same age, placing them at the equivalent of 10 years younger. Increased blood flow that occurs with physical activity may help generate new neurons in the hippocampus, an area of the brain involved with learning and memory.
The Harvard Medical School says aerobic exercise may help improve brain tissue by improving blood flow and reducing the chances of injury to the brain from cholesterol buildup in blood vessels.
Quit smoking: The Alzheimer’s Association indicates that evidence shows smoking increases the risk of cognitive decline. Smoking can impair blood flow to the brain and cause small strokes that may damage blood vessels.
Eat healthy foods: Foods that are good for the heart and blood vessels also are good for the brain. These include fresh fruits and vegetables,
whole grains, fish-based proteins, unsaturated fats, and foods containing omega-3 fatty acids. Neurologists state that, while research on diet and cognitive function is limited, diets, such as Mediterranean and Mediterranean-DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension), may contribute to a lower risk of cognitive issues.
Consume caffeine: Caffeine may help boost memory performance and brain health. A Journal of Nutrition study found people ages 70 and older who consumed more caffeine scored better on tests of mental function than those who consumed less caffeine. Caffeine may help improve attention span, cognitive function and feelings of well-being. Information from Psychology Today also indicates caffeine may help in the storage of dopamine, which can reduce feelings of depression and anxiety. In addition, compounds in cocoa and coffee beans may improve vascular health and help repair cellular damage due to high antioxidant levels.
Work the brain: Engaging in mentally stimulating activities can create new brain connections and more backup circuits, states Dr. Joel Salinas, a neurologist at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital. Working the brain through puzzles, reading and participating in social situations can stimulate the release of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a molecule essential for repairing brain cells and creating connections between them.
A good way to combine these lifestyle factors is to take an exercise class with friends, mixing the social, stimulation and exercise recommendations together.
Cognitive decline can come with aging, but through healthy habits, people can reduce their risk of memory loss and dementia.

STAY SAFE AND WARM DURING WINTER WORKOUTS
Wear appropriate headgear. For years, many people subscribed to the conventional wisdom that suggested people lose 40 to 45 percent of their body heat through their heads. But in 2008, researchers at Indiana University debunked that myth, suggesting that if humans lost that much heat through their heads, then they would be just as cold when going outside without a hat on as they would be if they left home without wearing any pants. But wearing headgear when exercising outdoors is still a good idea, as the head is more sensitive to changes in temperature than many other areas of the body. A wool hat you can pull down over your ears can protect them from getting too cold. Athletes may also want to consider ski masks or other facial covers that can protect their faces when winter winds are howling.

LOCAL ARTISAN, RICK STACY, SHARES WOODEN TREASURES FROM RAS RUSTICS
BY LORI BRUTON
Rick Stacy established RAS Rustics as a hobby because he enjoys working with his hands. He credits that to doing projects with his grandfather. When Rick and his brothers were young boys, they helped PéPé (French for grandfather) with projects which were primarily for their mom, a widow with nine children.
is experience and the cra Rick learned growing up led him to start his own business in 1982, R.A. Stacy Construction, which is still his main gig. It involves building, remodeling, and repairing homes. e business name represents his name.
I asked, “Is the A your middle initial, or does it represent your wife, Amy?”
He said, “Both. My middle name begins with A. When I married Amy, she took over the A.”
Branching out from there, Stacy decided to add another adventure just for fun. is allowed his artistic and creative side to emerge, and RAS Rustics was born.
at idea was inspired by building wooden loveseats for his kids when they married. He has maple trees in the woods on their homestead on Maple Avenue. e wooden loveseats were a unique wedding present so that each o spring could take a piece of Maple Avenue with them. A Bible Scripture is inscribed into each loveseat bench chosen speci cally for each couple.
At rst, he bought lumber locally, which was expensive. A er that, Stacy found a way to utilize the woods on his property. It was labor-intensive cutting down logs with a chainsaw and dragging them out of the woods by hand. It wasn’t long before he got a cart with wheels and a tractor to move the logs out of the woods. He also upgraded his chainsaw to a bandsaw mill, which made the process more e cient and not as physically taxing.
other people use kilns to heat and dry wood.
Initially, he made pieces for his own use. When he acquired more than he could use, he spread the word to woodworkers, homeowners, and DIY people wanting to do their own projects.
Still, most of Stacy’s projects stay in the family. He likes cra ing rustic pieces from maple and ash that bring out his creative and artistic gi . Each piece is one of a kind with a live edge, meaning at least one edge has the tree bark on it. Spalting, unique coloration and patterns are found inside the logs he uses, caused by fungi and sought a er by woodworkers.
Occasionally, Stacy will make pieces for people. He made some charcuterie boards, which make great gi s. You can nd a few of his pieces at the Sweet Life Country Store in Elba, NY. is work is truly a labor of love. ese are beautiful functional works of art, whether it’s a shelf or co ee table.

NOW HERE’S A TIP
By JoAnn Derson
* To make a nice ice pack, enclose several ice cubes in a plastic, sealable baggie, then wrap in a bandana. You can tie the ends together to keep the cover from slipping. When you want to refreeze, put the baggie in the freezer, and hang the bandana to dry. It will dry very quickly and can be reused soon.
* Want to get the most bang for your buck at the takeaway salad bar? Load up on bacon, walnuts, cheese, meats and dried fruits; go light on green beans, cucumbers, hard-boiled eggs, celery, radishes and chickpeas, which were marked up 200% to 300%.
* “When you clean out your fish tank, recycle the used water by pouring it on your house or garden plants. I don’t know what it is in the water, but it makes shrubs and flowers grow like crazy.” -- Patti in Orlando, Florida
* “The all-time best remedy for a runny nose or sore throat doesn’t cost hardly a thing: It’s plain old saltwater. Mix a half-teaspoon into a cup of hot water and gargle twice to three times a day. If the taste is off-putting, try swishing a bit of mouthwash in your mouth just before you gargle with the saltwater. This works so well, and even my doctor thinks it’s a great idea.” -- F.L. in Michigan
* Use salt to clean out your garbage disposal. Kosher salt has larger grains that work very well. Dump a half-cup in the disposal, run the cold water and hit the switch. The grains scour the inside, leaving a better smelling drain.
* “Here’s a great after-workout drink I just found out about: chocolate milk. The trainer at my gym prefers it over the fancy and costly “post-workout” drinks at the gym’s smoothie bar.” -- I.E. in Oregon

Should You Pay for Dog Training?
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I love my new puppy, Star. He is so easy to train, listens to my commands, and his potty training is going well. Still, I’m wondering if we should also work with a professional trainer. He has some resistance issues to certain commands, and he is a bit reactive to other dogs. Is this normal, or should I pay for training? -- Ricardo G., Orlando, Florida
DEAR RICARDO: A good trainer can look at the most obedient dog in the world and nd behaviors to work on. at’s because no dog is perfect, and neither are we.
It sounds like you’re doing a great job with Star, and you want to continue to level up his behavior training. is is a caring and responsible thing to do.
You’ve got a few training options to consider. While I personally prefer to train alongside my dog in a group or one-on-one training session, I have friends who send their dog to day camp where they receive obedience training and socialization while they’re away at work. Others send their dogs to intensive one- to two-week programs.
You’ll want to check out a potential trainer or training school carefully before committing. Dog training can take a chunk out of your budget, so you’ll want to be sure that Star is getting the training he needs. Meet with a trainer in person, with Star beside you, to chat with them about what you’d like to achieve in training and get a feel for how well the trainer works with Star.
Best of luck! I know that Star will do great.

A Heads Up at the Grocery Store
e time has come to study the labels of foods you buy, even if you’ve used those same products for a long time. Not only are manufacturers changing the size of the containers, they’re changing the ingredients. At this point we need to take a very close look at what we’re actually eating.
Changes to the ingredients in products we’ve always trusted might well be blamed on supply chain problems. If a manufacturer can’t easily get one ingredient, they might substitute something else.
But it means that what you assumed you were getting might no longer be true.
If, for example, you have to keep an eye on your sodium levels, you might discover that the amount of salt in a particular food has increased. You might have to adjust how much you eat or look for a di erent product.
We can no longer grab a dozen eggs and assume all will be well. If you’re baking, too-small eggs won’t work in your baked goods recipes. You need to open the carton and look at them. If you’re watching your cholesterol, you need to squint and read the ne print on the nutrition panel.
However, a warning: At the beginning of the pandemic, the Food and Drug Administration issued a temporary respite to food manufacturers. To help them keep producing food, the FDA said manufacturers didn’t have to put certain new information on labels when “minor formulation changes” were made to food. e policy, started in January 2020, was intended to remain in e ect only for the duration of the Covid pandemic and has been renewed every 90 days. It was to expire January 2023. Since they have to give 60 days notice to end the designation, it’s not likely that it will end until April, if that.

Most people think that aging is irreversible and we know that there are mechanisms even in the human machinery that allow for the reversal of aging, through correction of diet, through anti-oxidants, through removal of toxins from the body, through exercise, through yoga and breathing techniques, and through meditation.
~ Deepak Chopra
CHOOSING THE RIGHT CAREGIVER FOR YOUR PARENTS (NAPSI)—According to Pew Research, every day, 10,000 Americans turn 65 years old. And that will continue for the next 12 years, reaching 18 percent of the population by 2030. Americans 85 and older will triple in population by 2050.
With a rapidly aging population living longer than past generations, caregivers are in high demand. A cost of care study by Genworth forecasts that there will be a shortage of more than 3 million home care aides in the next decade. To meet this demand, over the years there has been an explosion of home care franchises and independent home care agencies across the country. Yet, as many families discover, finding the right caregiver to meet your family’s specific needs can be a challenge.
One innovator looking to solve the caregiver gap is a San Francisco− based company focused on modernizing and improving home care for older adults. By professionalizing its caregiver workforce and developing technology to improve efficiencies, it’s able to deliver more consistent and reliable care. Through its Honor Care Network, the company partners with home care agencies in multiple states, making quality care more accessible to more families.
Called Honor, the firm suggests five things that families should consider when hiring a caregiver to ensure a safe and optimal care experience for their parents or loved ones:
Important Questions to Ask Your Home Care Agency
1. How do you screen your caregivers for safety? A responsible, credible home care agency in California always conducts a thorough screening andbackgroundcheckofitscaregiversbeforesendingthemintoaclient’s home. In addition to Home Care Aide (HCA) mandated certification and Department of Justice fingerprinting and background checks, the best home care agencies go further by screening for DMV driving records, drug testing, and abiding by strict minimum-age requirements.
2. How do you train your caregivers and verify their skills? Caregivers should have a solid foundation of training, such as how to use mechanical lifting equipment, basic knowledge of how to support clients living with Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease, and how to assist with daily living activities such as bathing, grooming and hygiene. Ask if the caregivers are tested on scenario-based skills and if any personality tests are conducted to check for temperament under stress or condition-related situations, such as “sundowning.”
3. What is your performance record for on-time arrivals and noshows? How promptly do you communicate schedule changes to your clients? Ask the agency how it manages late arrivals and last-minute cancellations by caregivers. Does it guarantee a replacement? How does it communicate with clients and how often? What is its policy if there’s an ongoing tardiness issue?
4. How do you manage caregiver performance? Ask how the agency motivates caregivers to provide the best care and client experience. Does it value and know its caregivers’ track record and does it continually train caregivers to ensure it has the best talent? Assessing personality and chemistry with clients is also important.
5. How do your caregivers communicate with each other about a client’s condition during shift changes? Your parent will likely have more than one caregiver to staff weekly schedules. Ask the agency how each caregiver is notified of a client’s daily condition, how that information is communicated to other assigned caregivers to ensure seamless care, and how families are notified, how often and when.
Finding the right caregiver can be less stressful if you know the right questions to ask. Initiating a conversation at the start about what’s most important to you in finding the right caregiver can make all the difference.

Popular sports for seniors: Fishing: Fishing is more than just a leisurely day at the lake. Casting and reeling in your catch provides a good workout for the arms, legs and core muscles of the body. If you fish on the water, rowing out to your lucky spot provides additional cardiovascular exercise.

Christmas kindness
My 2 year-old granddaughter and I were shopping, smiling hellos to several other customers. One elderly lady returned the hello and made our day. She asked if I could do something for her. Thinking she needed help to reach an item, I agreed. She then opened her purse, removed some money, and asked that I buy a treat for the child. She pointed out a book display near the front of the store. My granddaughter loves books. We were happy to be blessed by this kind and generous gesture of a retired school teacher.
A Little Christmas Miracle
A huge thank you to the young man who helped me outside the Tractor Supply Store in Geneseo. It was so cold and my hands felt frozen. I couldn't lift the hay bale that I had bought into my car. I was just wondering what to do, when he came up and asked me if I needed help. I really did! Thanks so much! Your kindness is so appreciated.
To the woman who turned in my wallet at Brockport Lowes
I went to the Brockport Lowes Tuesday, December 27 to buy compressor parts so I could inflate my grandson's basketball being given as a Christmas gift. As I selected the appropriate kit and was heading towards the check-out, I noticed that my wallet was missing. I frantically retraced my steps but couldn't find the wallet. Checking the Customer Service desk, I was informed that some woman had turned it in without identifying herself. I want to express my sincere gratitude and thanks for your honesty. In that wallet, I carried a written prayer given to me by my father's priest for God's protection as I left for Vietnam in 1969. You have reminded me that there are still good and honest people in this world. Merry Christmas and God bless you.

Why do so many people have to park in the street? Use your driveway! Especially on narrow streets! Why is your inconvenience everyone else’s?
6am snowblowing isn’t cool!
The quiet hours in our complex end at 7am. So why are you out snow blowing so early? Why not do it the night before? It hadn’t snowed overnight so you could have done it then! It woke my young child and she couldn’t go back to sleep. Next time be considerate of your neighbors.
RE: Theft
This is in response to this person’s rant about the person/ people who took change out of their car at a senior citizen apartment building. The police should coin the initials M.O. because this was the same M.O. that happened to me in 2019. They took quarters and other items out of my car. Unfortunately, I did not report this to the police because they would say it was my fault– I did not lock my doors. Silly me, so much for faith in your fellow man or woman.
Mail delivery
Is anyone else receiving their mail after 6:30-7:30 pm every day? Yesterday, my USPS app stated what I was supposed to receive in the mail, but we received no mail. Our daily newspaper wasn’t even delivered. I’m not referring to a justifiable reason like bad weather; it was 50 degrees and no rain or snow. Sometimes we get the Saturday and Tuesday newspaper on the same day! The rates go up and the service gets worse.

DID YOU KNOW?
According to a 2011 study published in the peer-reviewed journal the Annual Review of Nutrition, experimental data from animal studies suggests that maternal undernutrition among pregnant women may play a role in preterm birth. The study also reported that a lack of specific nutrients during pregnancy may influence gestation length by increasing the likelihood that a woman will give birth before reaching full-term. Women who are pregnant or hope to become pregnant can speak with their physicians about the role nutrition can play in a healthy, full-term pregnancy.

TIPS FOR REALIZING GOALS
IN THE YEAR AHEAD
Keep track of your progress. Keep a resolutions journal or start a blog that allows you to write about your efforts. If your goal is to pay down debt, make a spreadsheet that tracks your progress. That spreadsheet might be more motivational than simply seeing a loan or credit card balance gradually reduce on your monthly statement. Writing about your trials and errors can help others and also provide a great way for you to explore your approach and tinker with it to ensure your ultimate success.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
By Keith Roach, M.D.
Supplements Taken at Lower Doses Won’t Adversely Affect Health
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a healthy 46-year-old woman who exercises daily for health, strength, and stress relief. I also want to stay relatively lean. In order to maintain muscle mass and control fat, I’ve been advised consistently (by a Ph.D. nutritionist and a couple of “nutrition coach” trainers) to take 1 g of protein per pound of body weight daily. They also have advised leucine and L-carnitine supplements. I usually have 1 scoop of whey protein (about 25 g) and 1/2 to 1 scoop of plant protein daily. I take about 1 g of leucine per day. My L-carnitine supplement is 500 mg.
My question is, are any, or all, of these supplements safe for longterm use and are there any concerns or possible side effects I should be concerned about? I have read plenty that recommend them, but the goals for taking them are usually short-term.
Other than having extra protein, my diet is slanted away from sugar and toward whole foods and lots of vegetables. I work out seven days a week, including four to five “hard” days of cardio and weightlifting and two to three “light” days of easy cardio. I also stretch and get at least seven hours of sleep daily.
I want to have health, mobility and strength as long as possible and want to make sure I’m not inadvertently hurting the long goal by using supplements now. -- M.
ANSWER: Understanding advice on nutrition and supplements for exercise is difficult because the evidence is often poor-quality and conflicting, probably due to the fact that what is effective for one person may be ineffective for another.
Carnitine is found naturally in muscle and is important in moving fat into the mitochondria, where it can be used as energy. Carnitine supplementation has been shown to improve exercise tolerance and increase use of body fat stores for energy. It can also improve blood and oxygen flow to the muscle if taken with large amounts of carbohydrates (the study authors used 4 ounces of simple sugar in water -- more than it sounds like you take in, and perhaps more than optimal for good health). Carnitine is safe at the dose you are taking: At doses six times that high, it may cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
Leucine, like valine and isoleucine, is a branched-chain amino acid. They are “essential,” meaning they cannot be synthesized in the body. They are found in red meat and dairy products. They are also found in legumes, nuts, grains and seeds, but a person on a strict vegan diet needs to be careful to mix these appropriately, to get all the essential amino acids they need.
Some claim that branched-chain amino acids reduce fatigue, improve endurance, provide fuel for working muscle and reduce muscle protein breakdown and soreness from exercise, but there is no high-quality evidence that they are effective. A chicken breast contains the equivalent of seven average branched-chain amino acid supplement tablets. Leucine in the dose you are taking should have no adverse effects.
The standard guideline recommends that individuals consume 150 g of protein-rich foods daily, for a 2,000 calorie diet. You may be burning more than 2,000 calories with exercise, but you are certainly getting all the protein you need. Excess animal protein may worsen kidney function, but plant protein does not seem to cause that issue. In my opinion, your diet and exercise, which are remarkable, are much more likely to achieve your goals than your supplements, but I do not think the supplements are harming you. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2023 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved
THE DANGERS OF BELLY FAT
What’s so bad about belly fat? Seeing belly fat as a merely cosmetic concern overlooks the effects it has on overall health.According to the Mayo Clinic, belly fat is not limited to the extra layer of padding just below the skin known as subcutaneous fat. Belly fat also includes visceral fat, which means it extends to deep inside the abdomen and surrounds internal organs. Johns Hopkins Medicine notes that visceral fat in the belly is very close to the liver, which can turn it into cholesterol. From there, the fat goes through the bloodstream and may collect along the walls of the arteries, potentially contributing to a hardening and narrowing of the arteries known as atherosclerosis. The complications of atherosclerosis depends on which arteries are affected, but they can include an assortment of diseases that affect the arteries and a greater risk for aneurysms and chronic kidney disease.
Johns Hopkins Medicine notes that visceral fat is just as harmful for the heart as high blood pressure and smoking. So while efforts to reduce belly fat may initially be embraced to improve appearance, individuals should know that reducing fat in their midsections also can reduce their risk for a host of conditions, some of which are deadly.

DID YOU KNOW? When nurses go to work each day, many report to hospitals while others work at private practices. For others, a day at the office takes place at research labs. According to the online nursing resource Nurse.org, research nurses develop and implement studies to investigate and provide information on new medications, vaccinations and medical procedures. Research nurses, sometimes referred to as clinical nurse researchers or nurse researchers, typically have advanced degrees, and many first work as research assistants, clinical data collectors and/or clinical research monitors to gain some practical experience as they pursue or consider pursuing their degrees. Some research nurses even conduct independent research, though Nurse.org notes that such professionals need advanced degrees such as an MSN or Ph.D. to pursue such a path. More information about becoming a research nurse can be found at www.Nurse.org.
