For the Lemon Verbena Pesto, combine the lemon verbena, garlic, cheese, and nuts in a food processor and pulse to puree. Slowly add the olive oil with the processor running until the mixture thickens and emulsifies, about 1 minute. Season to taste with salt and pepper. The pesto will keep in the refrigerator for 7 to 10 days, or it may be frozen for up to 3 months. Place the grill wok or basket directly over the fire and stir-grill, tossing the beans with wooden paddles or grill spatulas until crisp-tender, about 5 to 8 minutes. Transfer the grilled beans to a large bowl and toss with about 1/4 cup of the Lemon Verbena Pesto or to taste.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Oct. 3, 1981, a hunger strike by Irish nationalists at the Maze Prison in Belfast in Northern Ireland is called off after seven months and 10 deaths. Afterward, British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher agreed to several of the protesters’ demands, including the right to wear civilian clothing.

RISK FACTORS FOR BREAST CANCER Obesity increases the risk of breast cancer, especially in postmenopausal women who have not used hormone replacement therapy.

The last faded autumn leaflet hangs from a frozen branch, just a short fall from the tree to winter. ~Terri Guillemets

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Keep the yolks in hard-boiled eggs from crumbling by wetting your knife between slices. * “Save plastic bags that cannot be recycled, and use them to collect food scraps that cannot be composted or flushed.” -- B.M. in New York * “I use double-stick tape to hang lighter items on my walls, since it does not leave a hole, and I am a renter. You also can use it to reduce noise from vibrations. For instance, I used it in my car to keep the carpet lying flat in the trunk.” -- J.T. via e-mail * “To soften butter without melting it, warm a bowl that is bigger than the butter stick and invert it over the butter on a plate. It’s nice before a meal because it makes a hard stick of butter easier to spread on bread rolls, but not so soft that you use too much.” -- T.G. in Indiana * “That time of the year is almost here. You know, the time when running the heater gives the whole house the zaps. To keep our carpets from giving us static shock, we fill a water spray bottle with 1 part laundry softener and 4 parts water. Give the air and carpet a spritz, and it kills the zaps.” -- A.O. in Canada * “Hard-water stains in the toilet are no match for denture tablets. Simply drop one in the toilet and let sit overnight. A quick scrub and a flush in the morning should do it.” -- P.S. in Washington

78th Annual Turkey Dinner To benefit our community

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Why do people leave their pets behind when a hurricane or forest fire approaches? And what happens to the pets that survive a disaster? -- Kerry in Cincinnati

Saturday, October 16th, 2021 Drive-thru Curbside Pick Up Only 4:30pm-6:30pm

Serving 600 meals, preorders available Call (585)358-1265 No Cost, only goodwill offerings or bag of nonperishable items if able.

Enjoy dining out w it h k ids Choose restaurants w isely: M ake concessions as to w here and w hen you eat. Coordinate around nap times so c hildren w ill be happy and w ell-rested.

Rush United Methodist Church 6200 Rush-Lima Road, Rush Again this year, we feel led by God to share this meal with the community. The purpose of this dinner is to feed the hungry in our community. We ask you to bring a goodwill offering, a bag of nonperishable food/personal care items or simply your own hunger. If this is your first dinner with us, or your 78th, we are pleased to share God’s blessing with you & through you.

LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY Crowd control: Local restaurants tend to be smaller and more intimate than many chain restaurants. This can translate into a calm dining experience. When crowds are small, the noise level inside the restaurant may be muted and service may be fast because there aren’t as many tables to serve. Furthermore, local establishments, although concerned about making a profit, may be less worried about table turnover rate, preferring to let diners linger if it means repeat business.

Selec t restaurants that accommodate children. Ask to be seated out of the w ay just in case your son or daughter acts up. This w ay you w ill not disturb other patrons. Restaurants tend to be less busy right before dinner service and directly after. If you can time your meals to these off-peak hours, it may make for a more enjoyable dining experience.

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

DEAR KERRY: Pet owners don’t intend to abandon pets to approaching danger, but it happens all too frequently: Pets get left behind when a disaster strikes. Sometimes an owner has to leave the pet behind -- rescue services prioritize human life over pets when a situation is dire. Sometimes, in the panic and confusion of gathering up things to evacuate, a pet will dart out the door. And sometimes, pets get abandoned because evacuation centers won’t allow pets inside. After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, when more than 100,000 pets were left to fend for themselves during and after the storm (www. louisianaspca.org/about-us/hurricane-katrina/animal-rescue-facts/), pet shelters radically changed the way they manage intake and care of animals. They became more proactive. They built bigger, stronger networks with other shelters locally and nationwide, and coordinated their efforts with emergency responders. (www.sierraclub. org/sierra/what-happens-animals-during-natural-disasters). They got better at reuniting rescued pets with owners. Pet owners can play a direct role in helping pet rescue efforts by being proactive well before a disaster strikes. Microchip your pets and keep contact info up to date. Keep up with your pet’s vaccinations and health checks. Most importantly, have your own evacuation plan that includes a “go” bag for you and for your pet. A pet’s “go” bag should include an extra leash and collar, a copy of their medical and registration records, pet food, waste pickup bags or pee pads, and extra medication if they take any. Know where to evacuate and which shelters allow pets. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

Why did my hydrangea not flower? Usually, it is because of poor pruning by humans or by Mother Nature. I have learned it is best to ask for more information before I give a complete answer. “Did you receive this hydrangea as a gift for Easter or Mother’s Day? Did it have pretty plastic or foil paper around the pot?” If so, the plant may be a florist hydrangea, and it is simply not hardy enough for our area. Mother Nature freezes the flower buds each year destroying the future flower.

Usually, these plants are big-leaf hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla). Most varieties bloom on old wood, i.e., wood that grew and produced flower buds during the previous year. Therefore, early, or late freezes or bitter winters may damage the flower buds. The other reason is pruning at the wrong time. If you cut back a hydrangea between the fall and early spring, you have trimmed off the future flower because it blooms on old wood. For further information, go to http://ccelivingstoncounty.org/

PROTECTIVE FACTORS FOR BREAST CANCER

Circulation Manager

Tamoxifen and raloxifene belong to the family of drugs called selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs). SERMs act like estrogen on some tissues in the body, but block the effect of estrogen on other tissues. Treatment with tamoxifen lowers the risk of estrogen receptor-positive (ER-positive) breast cancer and ductal carcinoma in situ in premenopausal and postmenopausal women at high risk. Treatment with raloxifene also lowers the risk of breast cancer in postmenopausal women. With either drug, the reduced risk lasts for several years or longer after treatment is stopped. Lower rates of broken bones have been noted in patients taking raloxifene. Taking tamoxifen increases the risk of hot flashes, endometrial cancer, stroke, cataracts, and blood clots (especially in the lungs and legs). The risk of having these problems increases markedly in women older than 50 years compared with younger women. Women younger than 50 years who have a high risk of breast cancer may benefit the most from taking tamoxifen. The risk of having these problems decreases after tamoxifen is stopped. Talk with your doctor about the risks and benefits of taking this drug. Taking raloxifene increases the risk of blood clots in the lungs and legs, but does not appear to increase the risk of endometrial cancer. In postmenopausal women with osteoporosis (decreased bone density), raloxifene lowers the risk of breast cancer for women who have a high or low risk of breast cancer. It is not known if raloxifene would have the same effect in women who do not have osteoporosis. Talk with your doctor about the risks and benefits of taking this drug. Other SERMs are being studied in clinical trials.

PROTECT YOUR HOME FROM WINTER’S FREEZE Service HVAC systems It’s important to ensure that heating systems are working properly prior to the cold-weather season. It may only take hours for the interior of a home to reach dangerously low temperatures without adequate heat. Homeowners should schedule annual checkups of furnaces and hot water heaters. Inspect the heat exchanger for cracks, install a clean air filter and make sure all thermostats are working properly.

WHAT TO DO WHEN A PROJECT STALLS Be mindful of permits. Some home improvement projects require permits, and these permits often have expiration dates. Homeowners must keep permits in mind when projects start to stall, recognizing that they may need to reapply for permits if projects go unfinished for especially long periods of time.

Gas-powered devices discharge fuel exhaust into the air, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions. Instead, reap the benefits of peace and quiet as well as exercise from manual raking. While raking, do not feel the need to remove every leaf. A certain amount of organic matter can be beneficial to the soil and even insulate the lawn somewhat. A leftover leaf here or there also may provide protection for insects and small animals. For example, many native bees spend the winter in tunnels in the ground, cracks in mortar, holes in dead wood, or within hollow stems, and they need lawn and garden litter to survive. THE ORIGIN S OF OKTOBERFEST Although Oktoberfest originated in M unich, Germany, Oktoberfest celebrations now take place all over the globe. They are a chance to enjoy the early autumn w eather w ith music, food, entertainment and, of course, German beer. Oktoberfest is a 16-day folk festival that begins at the end of September and runs through the first w eek of October. Roughly six million people travel to Germany each year to participate in the official Oktoberfest, w hile many others attend festivities closer to home. W hile many people are familiar w ith the foods, beverages and pageantry of Oktoberfest, they may not be so sure of Oktoberfest’s origins.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.

According to History.com, the first Oktoberfest took place on October 12, 1810, w hen Bavarian Crow n Prince Louis, later to be know n as King Louis I of Bavaria, married Princess Therese von SachsenHildburghausen. The citizens of M unich w ere invited, and the festivities w ere held on the fields in front of the city gates. Horse races took place and eventually concluded the festivities, both at the c ity gates and elsew here across Bavaria. The festival and horse races w ere held once again the follow ing year, giving rise to the tradition of Oktoberfest. To increase the potential for fun and take advantage of longer days, the event w as expanded from one day to a few w eeks, stretching through September and into October. The tradition-rich horse race no longer takes place and hasn’t for more than 50 years. But the festive atmosphere still prevails. Huge tents are erected to accommodate the large crow ds. Since 1950, the traditional festival opening has been a tw elve-gun salute and the tapping of the first keg of Oktoberfest beer at 12:00 by the M ayor of M unich w ith the cry “ O’zapft is! ” (“ It’s tapped! ” ). M illions of people participate in Oktoberfest celebrations. An abundance of food and millions of liters of beer are available to enhance the fun.

DON’T MISS THE GAME!!

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Husband Is Always Tired

Today’s hearing aids are barely visible, highly effective and easy to afford.

---

DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband is tired all the time. He functions, but frequently has to sit to recoup his energy, even after a shower. He is diabetic and has been for over 10 years. He does not take insulin and manages to keep his A1C within 7.1 to 6.9. He weighs 207 pounds, and he’s 6 feet, 1 inch tall and 75 years old. His bloodwork always comes back normal, and a nuclear stress test came back negative. We have discussed this chronic fatigue with our family doctor. His only explanation is possibly low testosterone (the low end of normal). We know that some if not all of his medications list fatigue as a side effect, but we cannot persuade our doctor to do further tests. My husband does have an appointment with a cardiologist in May for a consultation and any suggestions, and also a checkup in six months with our family doctor. My concern is his medications and the fact that they are generic. I have read many stories about generic drugs and problems with their effectiveness. -- J.C. ANSWER: Fatigue, which is the sensation of feeling tired, is a nonspecific symptom and a complaint that’s commonly heard by general doctors. It can be related to many diseases, as disparate as multiple sclerosis to heart failure, anemia to depression, and chronic infection to sleep disturbances. However, your husband notes a severe intolerance to exertion, which makes me suspect systemic exertion intolerance disorder, also called myalgic encephalomyelitis or chronic fatigue syndrome. Poor sleep, difficulty thinking or concentrating, and having worse symptoms with standing also go along with this diagnosis. There is yet no lab test for confirmation. The diagnosis is made after considering other causes, and testing for those that make sense after a careful history and exam. Diabetes, when not well controlled, may lead to chronic fatigue. I’m not so concerned with generic medications as I am about too many or the wrong ones, so a careful review of medications is appropriate. I have previously recommended a graded exercise program for this condition; however, the study that led to this recommendation had several significant issues; many people will actually have worsening of their post-exercise fatigue, so exercise must be used very cautiously and on an individualized basis. Cognitive behavioral therapy has had some benefit, but we desperately need better treatments.

It is estimated that 252,710 new cases of invasive breast cancer (cancer that has spread from the site where it started into surrounding, healthy breast tissue) will be diagnosed among women in the U.S. in 2017. In addition to invasive cancers, it is projected that 63,410 cases of non-invasive (in situ) breast cancer will be diagnosed. Compiled by the Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester

HOW TO OVERCOME WORKOUT FATIGUE Give the body time to recover. Whether it’s more time between sets of repetitions or an extra day off between workouts, a fatigued body might just need more time to rest and recover. Aging men and women must recognize that they might not be capable of pushing themselves as hard as they once did and should adjust their workouts accordingly.

The Gospel Corner Searching In All The Wrong Places That will always happen when you don’t have God our Creator. Even Christians can be deceived into thinking satisfaction comes through education, work, wealth, religion and entertainment. Yes, many churches are fooled also. Members get deep into their church but not God. Only a sincere, humble repentance to God and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ will give you purpose in life. In John 4:13 Jesus says “Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again, But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst, but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.” That’s real satisfaction. Get a real relationship with Jesus now; it’s free.

S E V RA No grapes for dogs! Thanks to the staff at York Animal Hospital for saving our lab who ate grapes off the vine! Dr. Morgan, Kristi, and Jen C. took such great care of our baby. We can’t thank you enough! - Scout’s Mom and Dad

Going out of his way A thank you to the driver who went out of his way at a hotel I was staying at. When asked if he could drive me to a certain destination, he said he was sorry, and that it was beyond where they were allowed to go with their company van. However, after looking around and determining he wasn’t busy, he said to me, “Let’s go!” We hear all the time about people going the extra mile for their customers. Thanks for doing so!

Kindness matters! I have worked about 27 years in this town where my husband grew up. How happy we all were when my daughter, her husband and their 6-year-old daughter bought a home here! My granddaughter was homeschooled last year and hasn’t played with other kids in a long time. She is very bright, happy, friendly, energetic, kind, and eager without a mean bone in her body. This last weekend, I took her to the park. A little girl and her brother came to play. My granddaughter asked to play with them. They ran away, ignoring her each time she followed. Thinking they did not like her, she cried, heartbroken. So, we went to a neighboring playground, but there, another little girl and her brother kept running away. My granddaughter said, “Little girl, little girl…can I talk to you please? I haven’t had any little kids to play with in a long, long time and I want to know if……” The little girl ran away. “Little girl, can I please talk to you?” No response. I hugged my granddaughter as she started crying, and that little girl laughed at us. The welcome my granddaughter got here makes me cry. She starts school for the first time next week and is so excited to “meet some friends.” I pray she gets a classroom with warm, receptive, friendly children who will befriend this wonderful little girl with a big heart.

Social Security Cap Each week, I see comments regarding Social Security. How many of you realize there is a wage-base cap? According to IRS Topic 751 for earnings in 2021, this base is $142,800. Which means that any earnings over this amount are not subject to Social Security withholdings. If your neighbor earns $250,000, only the first $142,800 is subject to Social Security withholdings. That also means that Jeff Bezos pays on only the first $142,800. Also, Donald Trump, Bill Gates, Lady Gaga, George Clooney, Mark Zuckerberg, and the list goes on, only pay on the first $142,800 of income. The powers that be making the decision on the wage-base cap, I am sure, make considerably more than this cap. I’m certain there is nothing we little people can do to change this unfair practice, but it seems a significant raise in this cap could go a long way to making Social Security self-sustaining for years and years into the future. Hero or villain? It is amazing to watch the people who, just a year ago, praised healthcare workers as heroes be the same who are now condemning them as villains for not wanting the COVID vaccine. There were so many signs that praised them. Now, they are the enemy?

UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE Deciding if you need coverage. While life insurance seems like the kind of thing every person should have, that’s not necessarily the case. For example, single men and women with no dependents and no tax or debt concerns generally do not need life insurance. If you are single but have tax issues or a considerable amount of debt, then a life insurance policy can be used to pay those debts upon your death. Adults with dependents, such as a spouse and/or children, should consider purchasing life insurance, which can help your surviving dependents maintain their quality of life and pay their bills in the wake of your death.

FINANCING FUNERALS

GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Survivors often find comfort in the knowledge that they can do good in the name of a loved one. Tributes or memorial gifts can be approached in different ways and serve as an ongoing reminder of a deceased loved one. Create a charitable foundation: Those who have the time and resources can establish their own charitable groups in the decedent’s name. This method of charity requires the most time and effort, but can prove to be quite an impactful memorial. Individuals who would like to go this route can consult with financial and tax professionals about the best way to establish a charitable group. Community foundation: Families can focus on something their loved one cared deeply about, such as animal rescue, children, the arts, or even particular places in a community - such as a local park. According to CarePages, a company that produces free patient websites and offers community support for those coping with illness, families can choose to have their donations funneled to specific charities or nonprofit groups. Otherwise, funds can be allocated to a third party community fund that will distribute money to various organizations no matter where they are located.

According to Lincoln Heritage Funeral Advantage, the average funeral costs between $7,000 and $10,000. It can be easy to overlook planning for such a large expense, and many people may think their funeral costs will be covered by their life insurance policies. However, that isn’t always the case and certain complications can arise. The funeral planning information guide Funeral Basics states that sometimes insurance policies become invalid if payments have not been made. Policies may have liens on them, or some named beneficiaries may no longer be alive. This can stall the process as issues are worked through. In addition, it can sometimes take between six and eight weeks for beneficiaries to receive life insurance policy payouts. Since many funerals take place within a week of a person’s death, it’s unlikely that surviving family members will be able to finance funerals with life insurance payouts. In addition, some policies may not be assignable, which means the benefits cannot be assigned to go to a third party who will file the claim for you (i.e., the funeral home or an assignment company with which the funeral home partners). It’s important to determine if an existing policy is assignable and to take appropriate measures if it is not. Individuals may want to consider burial insurance or preneed funeral insurance. Another option is to use preplanning services, which allow people to prepay for funeral expenses and make planning decisions regarding the services and burial so that family members will not be tasked with financing and/or planning a funeral during a difficult time in their lives.

MEMORIAL GIFTS HONOR LOVED ONES he loss of a friend or loved one is seldom easy, particularly if a person had been suffering from an illness. Close friends and family honor the memories of their deceased loved ones in different ways. Charitable giving can be a great way to honor a loved one’s memory while helping others.

Medical tribute: Memorial gifts that assist medical associations or groups working to find cures or offer treatments for diseases are quite popular. If a loved one passed away due to a specific illness, it is common to ask for donations to a specific organization that specializes in information and services pertaining to that illness. Many such groups have a “donate in memory” option on their websites. Oftentimes families are notified regarding who made memorial donations in their loved ones’ names, but the amount of the donation need not be revealed. Personal intentions: Those who would like to make a donation but cannot think of a charity to associate with their deceased loved one have a host of options at their disposal. Consider donating to a school or library, requesting materials be purchased in the decedent’s name. Otherwise, donate to a general scholarship fund, possibly at the decedent’s alma mater. Finish their work: If the decedent was engaged in a charitable project prior to their death, volunteer to help complete that project. Giving back after the death of a loved one is a great way to keep the memory of that person alive.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Holiday Gift Shortages If you will have holiday shopping to do this year, you need to get started on it now. Manufacturers and store owners are saying there will be shortages. There are labor problems, problems with container ships that can’t be offloaded in ports, trucks that can’t deliver the goods, material supply-chain problems ... you get the picture. Here are two suggestions to keep gift-buying simpler this year: toys and books. TOYS -- If you have small children to buy for, shop now. Manufacturers of many of the most popular toys are saying that they’ve seen shortages of required materials on a global scale. Try local toy stores for items they have in stock now. BOOKS -- Call your library and ask for age-appropriate suggestions for young children. Then, list in hand, call your local bookstore. Ask if they have in stock what you need. If you can actually go to the store and pick up the books curbside, you’re ahead of the game. Otherwise try ordering online, but look for things already in stock. For teens and adults, consider buying them a Kindle, an e-book reader available on Amazon. (I’ve had three different versions of Kindle since 2016 and truly appreciate the way I can order a book and have it appear on my e-reader within minutes.) A new Kindle, a $15 case and a $50 gift certificate for e-books would be welcome gifts for readers. Check the delivery dates of the various Kindle colors. Some are available immediately; others aren’t. When it comes to online shopping, experts advise ordering items that are as close to home as possible, not across oceans. Beware of local shipping delays as well. Gone are the days of always receiving boxes in just a few days. If you order something online, track it, and follow up with a phone call if necessary. any people have a soft spot for animals. However, it takes a uniquely compassionate person to go that extra mile to not only rescue animals, but also to rehabilitate them, as well. That is exactly what Rebecca Zielinski and her friend Ashley Mcneill did when they launched ABC Rehab, a licensed wildlife rehabilitation facility in Hemlock. Rebecca Zielinski has spent most of her life helping animals, inspired by her mother who volunteered at a cat rescue. “I have loved animals ever since I was 4-years-old,” said Zielinski. “As a toddler, I was already saving little critters!” A chipmunk enjoys a tasty snack As an adult, Zielinski opened a cat at ABC Rehab! rescue of her own, but she wanted to go further. “People would reach out to me about injured wildlife, and I didn’t know what to do to help them,” she explained. “I wanted to expand on what we were doing to rescue wildlife, as well.” At first, Zielinski didn’t know where to start, but conversations with wildlife rehabber friends soon pointed her in the right direction: a DEC exam. Prospective wildlife rehabilitators must register for this exam on the DEC website. As one would imagine, there is a lot to learn, but Zielinski had an edge. “Luckily, I already knew a lot of the basics that many other new rehabbers have to learn about things like supportive care, feeding, and wound care from rescuing cats and kittens,” she noted. “However, I did have to learn a lot of species-specific information regarding things like feeding and formula blends.” Passing the exam is only the beginning. “If you pass, the DEC sends you a link for your application which you send to Albany for special licensing,” explained Zielinski. “Then, you set up an interview with a DEC officer.” A DEC officer interviews each prospect and examines their rehabilitation facilities. “There are requirements your facility must meet,” Zielinski said. “It cannot be near domesticated animals. It must be in a separate, safe area with sufficient space. It must maintain a constant temperature and have proper cages. It also must have proper lighting with light and dark cycles to mimic the outdoors because we release rehabilitated wildlife back into the wild whenever possible.” In the spring of this year, ABC Rehab opened its doors for the first time. “Early spring is when the babies start coming,” Zielinski said. “Baby squirrels fall out of trees. Baby rabbits run from lawnmowers and animal attacks. When the weather warms up, baby birds fall out of nests. We have helped opossums, squirrels, nonmigratory birds, chipmunks, bunnies, and more.”

While Zelinksi had always received cries for help, their volume definitely increased. “I used to get a tag [on social media] here and there; now I get tags every day,” she said. “People continue to reach out to us, and the DEC and area veterinarians have the numbers of licensed rehabbers, so they call to transfer animals for care, as well.” To Ashley Mcneill, the need speaks volumes. “At first, I got into wildlife rehabilitation by association with Becky,” she recalled. “Then, I realized there just aren’t enough people who are doing this. We have really needed as much help as we could get. There are so many animals in need...we could not say no to them.” Saying yes comes with a cost. “A lot of our funds come out of our own pockets,” Zielinski stated matter-of-factly. “We are not paid nor supported by grants or government funding, so we rely on the community for help. Being licensed, we can ask for and accept donations, and when we post, people have been very generous.” Rehabilitation can become costly, especially with “late babies,” which reach maturity too close to winter and must be cared for until the warmer part of spring before being released. “We currently have about eight red squirrel babies here to stay with us this winter,” she said. “They are in little tree huts which mimic where they would be. We are careful not to handle them so that they do not get used to people.” Their efforts have not gone unappreciated. “A lot of people were excited when we opened,” said Zielinksi. “We received a lot of positive response to our posts, and those who find these injured animals are so appreciative of what we do. It is very rewarding.” In the future, Zielinski and Mcneill hope to expand ABC Rehab to include a larger outdoor facility which would allow them to also rehabilitate larger animals like foxes. Meanwhile, they encourage those who would like to help to donate to a wildlife rehabilitator near them. Wildlife rehabilitators are listed by the DEC at www.dec. ny.gov/animals/83977. “Supplies as simple as blankets, towels, and produce are very helpful,” Zielinksi encouraged. “Every animal deserves a chance, even if it is just a little mouse.”

Rebecca Zielinski (l) and Ashley Mcneill (r) have already helped many animals in need since opening ABC Rehab last spring!

DID YOU KNOW? Brief breaks during the work day can dramatically improve one’s ability to focus on a task. A 2011 study published in the journal Cognition found that brief mental breaks can improve focus on a prolonged task. The study’s authors tested participants’ ability to focus on a repetitive computerized task for 50 minutes under various conditions. The control group performed the task without breaks or diversions. The switch group and non-switch group memorized four digits before performing the task and were directed to respond if they saw one of the digits on the screen while performing the task. The switch group was the only group to be presented with the digits twice during the experiment, and both groups were tested on their memory of the digits at the end of the task. Most participants’ performance declined considerably over the course of the 50-minute task. However, the performance of those in the switch group did not decline at all, as the two brief breaks to respond to the digits allowed them to maintain their focus throughout the experiment. The researchers behind the study concluded that the switch group’s performance was steady because the brain is built to detect and respond to change, and its performance will actually suffer if it must maintain prolonged attention on a single task without taking a break. Professionals with a lot on their plates may see their performance improve by taking frequent mental breaks throughout the workday.

BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Eat a productivity-friendly lunch. If afternoons are when your productivity really starts to drop off, it might be time to reconsider what you eat for lunch. The body, which converts the foods we eat into glucose that energizes our brains and promotes alertness, processes different types of foods differently. So the food you eat for lunch may affect your energy levels for the rest of the day. For example, eating pasta provides a quick burst of energy because pasta releases glucose quickly. But that burst is often followed by a noticeable downturn in energy levels sparked by fading glucose levels that make it difficult for the brain to focus. In contrast, fruits and vegetables aid in the production of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that helps the brain stay motivated and engaged. Including some fruits and vegetables in your lunch or snacks may just lead to a more productive workday. EMPLOYMENT
