Hallow een is certainly know n for the spooky decorations that adorn homes and for the creative costumes children put on to canvas the neighborhood. But for many youngsters, Hallow een is all about the candy. In just a few hours, trick-or-treaters can accumulate a substantial amount of assorted chocolates, confections and other sw eet treats. Once everyone has had their fill of their favorite items, candy often gets relegated to a giant bow l on the kitchen table, w here it beckons each resident w ho passes by. Rather than submitting to the call of the candy and sacrificing your dental health as a result, enterprising individuals can repurpose that leftover Hallow een candy. Come October, people across the United States and various other countries participate in a tradition that has been around for some time. Trick-or-treating, which involves costumed children going door-to-door in the neighborhood asking for candy, is a staple of fall. While the exact origins of Halloween and trick-or-treating are hard to pin down, historians believe that Halloween came from a holiday known as Samhain, which ancient Brits and Celts once celebrated in recognition of the onset of winter. During Samhain, revelers believed that the world of the gods and ghosts was open and that these beings played tricks on the mortals. In turn, mortals lit bonfires and wore costumes so they would be unrecognizable to the ghosts. Unlike the lighthearted activities of today’s Halloween, ritualistic sacrifices and other more sinister events also took place 2,000 years ago on Samhain. Once Christianity took root in formally Celtic locales, the tide of Samhain celebrations turned and a focus was placed on celebrating the holy and dead in more meaningful ways on All Saints Day (November 1) and All Souls Day (November 2). In fact, Halloween, which comes from All Hallows Eve (hallow meaning “holy”), offered an opportunity to come together and pray, dress in costumes of hallowed saints and evil spirits, and act out the battles of good versus evil. Poor individuals also were known to travel to the homes of more fortunate individuals and receive pastries known as “soul cakes” in exchange for a promise to pray for that homeowner’s deceased relatives. The tradition of “souling” eventually gave way to trick-or-treating. History.com says it is unknown when the term “trick-or-treat” came into the vernacular. However, the phrase has at least been in use since 1951, when the popular “Peanuts” comics published a Halloween edition. The title “Trick or Treat” also was used on a Disney cartoon featuring Donald Duck in 1952. Page 6

GET YOUR HOME FALL- AND WINTER-READY One of the easiest and most effective defenses against heat loss is proper insulation. Prevent cold drafts from entering and the loss of heated air through basement headers, which, when left exposed, can make your furnace work harder. Look for a moisture-resistant product offering high thermal performance, such as Roxul Comfortbatt insulation. This type of mineral wool insulation makes installation simple. All that’s needed is a serrated blade or bread knife. Cut the batt to fit the cavity and press into place. The insulation will help improve energy efficiency as soon as it’s in place and provide savings over the lifetime of your home. Comfortbatt can also be used to top or replace old attic insulation. Aim for an R-50 or a depth of 16 inches.

PEST CONTROL

Trust Your Roof to a Specialist

TELLING SIGNS COMMON INSECTS ARE INFESTING A LAWN Chinch bugs: The experts at BobVila.com report that chinch bugs are not necessarily problematic when their populations are limited to around 10 to 15 bugs per square foot of lawn. In such instances, chinch bug populations are generally controlled by ants and ladybugs. However, extreme heat and drought, problems that have plagued various regions in North America in recent years, reduce the populations of bugs that feed on chinch bugs, thus increasing the population of these unwanted guests that feed on grass. GardenTech® indicates that damage from chinch bugs is most visible between June and September. That damage begins with grass taking on a purple tinge before it turns yellow and then brown after wilting.

Rochester’s Finest Class of 2023 Recognized B Y PAT T Y S C H W A R Z W E L L E R

The WNY Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation recognized the CFF Rochester’s Finest Class of 2023 at a Celebration Dinner on October 19th. This year’s honorees (with employer) are: Cullen Baker, FTS, Inc Jenelle Baker, KeyBank Austin Barkley, Bankers Life John Bennett, Worldwide Electric Sarah Fitzgerald, The Aragon Company Amanda Harvat, KAFL Lauren Henry, Pinnacle Hill Chiropractic Ashley Hill, Borg & Ide Imaging Jessica Kouzan, Keller Williams Realty Greater Rochester Michael Lawless, Villager Construction Nicole Liberatore, Innovative Solutions Alyson Mancuso, SWBR John Nucci, Woods Oviatt Gilman Bonnie Parrotta, Midtown Athletic Club Sean Phillips, Arctic Wolf CaTyra Polland, City of Rochester Ryan Proud, LeChase Construction Alexa Segrue, URMC Gina Trippe, Good Apple Ke’Shara Webb Fields, CPL Dustin Welch, Passero The Rochester’s Finest are honored for their career success, commitment to the community, and dedication to raising funds and awareness to help support CF research, patient services, and other mission-based initiatives of the CF Foundation. The program runs for 12 weeks and culminates in a celebration of their accomplishments. Included in the program are opportunities for professional development, networking, and developing skills as a leadership volunteer. In 2022, the CF Foundation funded $265 million in research and care for people with the disease. Money raised by Rochester’s Finest and hundreds of events nationwide support the Foundation’s mission to cure cystic fibrosis and to provide all people with CF the opportunity to lead long, fulfilling lives by funding research and drug development, partnering with the CF community, and advancing high-quality, specialized care. “Together with our community we are transforming cystic fibrosis from a deadly childhood disease to the best story in medicine,” said Heather McKeever, Executive Director of the WNY Chapter. “When the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation was first founded, children with CF typically did not live long enough to attend elementary school. Today, people with CF are achieving milestones like going to college and starting families of their own. We are making incredible progress, but

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

we can’t do it alone. We invite everyone in the Rochester community to help us make ‘CF’ stand not for cystic fibrosis, but for ‘Cure Found.’” Cullen Baker of FTS, Inc. says he grew up around Cystic Fibrosis, with two close cousins living with the disease. Baker has been involved with CF fundraising for decades and felt honored and excited to be part of the program this year. Baker says, “After seeing the advancements in medicine and technology over 30 years, I can see the immediate value the CFF has, and what this has done to address the horrible disease. I am confident that their drive will continue to advance beyond the day there is a cure for Cystic Fibrosis. CaTyra Polland of the City of Rochester says CFF has provided the participants with incredible professional development opportunities, networking and learning more about the disease and its impact on individuals, families, and the community. Pollard says, “The most meaningful experience has been meeting with Dr. Shaun Nelms to discuss his debut book … to learn about his experience in the education system and how he transformed East High School.” Pollard says CFF conducts essential research to improve the lives of those living with CF. I attended a celebration in Buffalo, NY where she witnessed the impact of CFF. She applauds the board members and staff, who “are so passionate about the agency’s mission and vision. I’m honored to help raise awareness.”

About the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is the world’s leader in the search for a cure for cystic fibrosis. The Foundation funds more CF research than any other organization, and nearly every CF drug available today was made possible because of Foundation support. Based in Bethesda, MD, the Foundation also supports and accredits a national care center network that has been recognized by the National Institutes of Health as a model of care for a chronic disease. The CF Foundation is a donor-supported non-profit organization. For more information, visit cff.org. Love to write? October is Anti-Bullying Month

Educate Yourself and Your Children

P

arents go to great lengths to protect their children. Keeping a watchful eye is a great way to protect kids when they're around the house, but parents may need to look for more subtle signs to determine if their children are being mistreated when they leave home. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services notes that roughly 20 percent of students between the ages of 12 and 18 experience bullying nationwide. Parents might once have written off bullying as part of growing up, but research has long since indicated that bullying can be very harmful to youngsters. The DHHS notes that research indicates that persistent bullying can lead to or exacerbate feelings of isolation, rejection, exclusion, and despair. Children who are persistently bullied also may experience new or worsening feelings of anxiety and depression. Parents can play a vital role in preventing bullying. Much of that role involves parents educating themselves about bullying, including what it is and what it's not and what are some warning signs that a child is involved in bullying.

What is bullying? The DHHS website Stopbullying.gov defines bullying as unwanted, aggressive behavior among school-aged children that involves a real or perceived imbalance of power. Bullying behavior is repeated or has the potential to be repeated over time. The imbalance of power associated with bullying involves the children who bully using some semblance of power they have over the children they're bullying to harm or control those youngsters. Their power may be physical strength, access to embarrassing information or popularity.

What isn't bullying? Various types of aggressive behavior have the potential to be harmful, but they do not fall under the umbrella of bullying. For example, Stopbullying.gov notes that children between the ages of three and five are learning how to coexist with one another, including how to share and cooperate. Children in these age groups may be aggressive if they don't get what they want, but their actions in such instances do not constitute bullying. More information about potentially harmful, non-bullying behaviors is available at Stopbullying.gov. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

What are some signs a child is being bullied? The DHHS notes that not all children who are being bullied exhibit warning signs. In addition, some signs might be more subtle than others. But some potential indicators that a child is being bullied include: • Unexplainable injuries • Lost or destroyed clothing, books, electronics, or jewelry • Frequent headaches or stomach aches, feeling sick or faking illness • Changes in eating habits, like suddenly skipping meals or binge eating. For example, children who are being bullied may come home from school hungry because they did not eat lunch. • Difficulty sleeping or frequent nightmares • Declining grades, loss of interest in schoolwork, or not wanting to go to school • Sudden loss of friends or avoidance of social situations • Feelings of helplessness or decreased self esteem • Self-destructive behaviors such as running away from home, harming themselves, or talking about suicide What are some signs a child is bullying other children? Parents also should be on the lookout for signs their children are bullying other youngsters. Such signs include: • Kids get into physical or verbal altercations • Children have friends who bully others • Increasingly aggressive behavior • Frequent trips to the principal's office or to detention • Kids have extra money or new belongings but cannot explain how they got the cash or items • Kids blame others for their problems • An unwillingness to accept responsibility for their actions • Kids are competitive and worry about their reputation or popularity Parents have a vital role to play in preventing bullying so all youngsters feel safe and sound inside and outside of school. DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 69-year-old who used to walk up 75 to 90 flights of steps several days a week as exercise. After a steering wheel airbag went off and damaged my heart, I am afraid my ability to do that stopped. After years of medication, I am now on a pacemaker, which definitely helps. Could the exercise have weakened my heart to such a degree that it could be viewed as overdoing it, therefore exacerbating my condition? -- Anon. ANSWER: In general, exercise does not harm the heart. On the contrary, exercise is almost always good for the heart. However, there are exceptions. In healthy people, there is an optimal amount of exercise, and extreme levels of exercise (on the order of running more than 10 miles a day every day) begin to decrease the benefit that a person gets from exercise. (This remains controversial, but I am convinced from the data.) In people with severe heart disease (the kind with blockages in the arteries), overdoing exercise can lead to a heart attack, but this is an exception. For every person who gets harmed by overexercising, there must be a hundred who don’t get adequate exercise. The fact that you have improved a lot on the pacemaker suggests that at least part of your problem wasn’t with the pump function of your heart, nor with the arteries leading to your heart. The problem lies with the electrical supply. Once a pacemaker is in, that problem is immediately alleviated, but the heart may still be deconditioned (“out of shape”). Regular exercise will help the problem. Your cardiologist can better answer the question for you and also give you advice on how to build up your exercise tolerance over time.

DID YOU KNOW? Testicular cancer is not common, but it does affect about one out of every 250 males at some point in their lifetimes, states the American Cancer Society. The average age at the time of diagnosis of testicular cancer is about 33. Unfortunately, the rate of testicular cancer, at least in the United States, increased over the last several decades, particularly in seminomas. It is important to note that testicular cancer can usually be treated successfully, so the risk of dying from the disease is very low. Still, it is important to discuss risk factors with one’s doctor, alerting physicians to any abnormalities in the testes or during urination, which may indicate a problem.

HOW TO DISCUSS A CANCER DIAGNOSIS WITH YOUR EMPLOYER Discuss how to share the news. Once your boss and HR department has been notified, seek their input regarding how to break the news to your colleagues. If you routinely work with people across multiple departments, it may be best to inform everyone through email, as it can be exhausting to break the news to each colleague individually. But it’s also alright if you prefer to keep the diagnosis under wraps. In the latter case, it might still be wise to inform those you work with closely each day, as that can help them prepare for increased responsibilities as your treatment progresses and potentially makes it hard for you to continue working full-time. When discussing how to share the news with an HR department, be specific about how much you want to share, as you may only feel comfortable discussing details of your diagnosis with certain coworkers, such as your boss.

SIMPLE STRATEGIES TO BE A MORE EFFICIENT DRIVER Utilize in-vehicle energy feedback. A recent study from researchers at the Institute of Transportation Studies found that drivers who used driver feedback devices in their vehicles in an effort to save fuel improved their gas mileage by about 10 percent. Many modern vehicles are equipped with such devices, and drivers can learn to use them and reap the rewards with less frequent trips to the filling station. Thurs Dec 14 • Holiday POPS Celebration with the BPO, Luncheon & RIDESHARING SAFETY TIPS Ridesharing is a growing trend among travelers from all walks of life. Some proponents of ridesharing support the concept because they feel it’s an eco-friendly means of traveling, while others find it’s a great way to save money. Still others employ third-party ridesharing services as a responsible, affordable way to travel when going out for a night on the town. With a greater number of people sharing rides and interacting with strangers than ever before, safety while ridesharing is an issue to take seriously. While ridesharing trips often occur without incident, there have been some instances of violent altercations involving drivers and passengers. According to the Taxicab, Limousine and Paratransit Association, ridesharing companies use a background check service to confirm criminal convictions and to make sure drivers are legally able to drive. However, these services may not perform FBI fingerprinting checks conducted by law enforcement officials, whereas taxi drivers are subjected fingerprinting. So some ridesharing drivers who have committed crimes in the past but have never been caught may pass ridesharing background checks, but they might not pass tests that taxi companies would insist they submit to, such as fingerprinting tests. While ridesharing, whether it entails carpooling or using an established ridesharing service, can be convenient, passengers must take steps to ensure their own safety when sharing rides.

RISK FACTORS FOR BREAST CANCER Women with a family history of breast cancer in a first-degree relative (mother, sister, or daughter) have an increased risk of breast cancer. Women who have inherited changes in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes or in certain other genes have a higher risk of breast cancer. The risk of breast cancer caused by inherited gene changes depends on the type of gene mutation, family history of cancer, and other factors. Page 23

DID YOU KNOW? Come autumn, many foods seem to take on a unique flavor exclusive to the season. That’s thanks to the ubiquitous “pumpkin spice,” which each fall is a specially featured ingredient in everything from cream cheese to marshmallows. Naturally, pumpkin spice is also a key ingredient when preparing pumpkin pie. But just what does pumpkin spice contain? Pumpkin spice is a combination of several different ground spices. It typically includes cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and nutmeg. It also may include allspice. Pumpkin spice is the name given to the blend in the United States. In the United Kingdom, pumpkin spice is known as “mixed spice,” which is a similar but not exact blend as that used to create pumpkin spice. Both feature cinnamon as the dominant flavor.

This year’s display of scarecrows on Main Street in Victor are very creative- well done!! What a difference! A Childcare Center in my town recently updated the exterior of its building and grounds. Its colors went from dark and dreary to bright and cheerful. It’s not only an improvement for the business, it’s a bright spot in our downtown that makes me smile every time I drive by! Breast Cancer

FAQ The World Health Organization reports that roughly 2.3 million women were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2020. By the end of that year, there were nearly eight million women alive who had been diagnosed with the disease in the previous half decade. A breast cancer diagnosis inevitably leads to questions about the disease. The bulk of those questions undoubtedly are asked by the millions of women who are diagnosed with breast cancer. But millions more individuals, including friends and family members of recently diagnosed women, may have their own questions. Women can discuss the specifics of their diagnosis with their physicians. In the meantime, the following are some frequently asked questions and answers that can help anyone better understand this potentially deadly disease.

What is breast cancer? Cancer is a disease marked by the abnormal growth of cells that invade healthy cells in the body. Breast cancer is a form of the disease that begins in the cells of the breast. The National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) notes that the cancer can then invade surrounding tissues or spread to other areas of the body.

Can exercise help to reduce my breast cancer risk? The NBCF notes that exercise strengthens the immune system and women who commit to as little as three hours of physical activity per week can begin to reduce their risk for breast cancer. However, even routine exercise does not completely eliminate a woman’s risk of developing breast cancer.

Is there a link between diet and breast cancer?

Is there a link between oral contraceptives and breast cancer? The NBCF reports that women who have been using birth control pills for more than five years are at an increased risk of developing breast cancer. However, the organization notes that risk is very small because modern birth control pills contain low amounts of hormones.

Can breastfeeding reduce breast cancer risk? Breastfeeding and breast cancer are linked, though the NBCF notes that the role breastfeeding plays in lowering cancer risk depends on how long a woman breastfeeds. The World Cancer Research Fund International notes that evidence indicates that the greater number of months women continue breastfeeding, the greater the protection they have against breast cancer.

Is there a connection between stress & breast cancer? The NBCF notes that researchers have found that traumatic events and losses can alter how the immune system functions, which can provide an opportunity for cancer cells to establish themselves within a person’s body. The NBCF urges women to identify ways to keep their stress levels in check. Breast cancer education can be a valuable asset as women seek to reduce their risk for the disease.

The organization Susan G. Komen®, a nonprofit source of funding for the fight against breast cancer, reports that studies have shown eating fruits and vegetables may be linked to a lower risk for breast cancer, while consuming alcohol is linked to an increased risk for the disease. In addition, the NBCF reports that a high-fat diet increases breast cancer risk because fat triggers estrogen production that can fuel tumor growth.

BREAST CANCER IS THE SECOND MOST COMMON TYPE OF CANCER IN AMERICAN WOMEN.

3.

Women in the United States get breast cancer more than any other type of cancer except skin cancer. Breast cancer is second to lung cancer as a cause of cancer death in American women. However, deaths from breast cancer have decreased a little bit every year between 2003 and 2012. Breast cancer also occurs in men, but the number of new cases is small.

BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Squeeze in a midday workout. Numerous studies have shown the many benefits to daily exercise, but professionals may not know that exercise can help improve their productivity at the office. A 2005 study from researchers at the then-named Leeds Metropolitan University in England asked 200 workers to answer questions regarding their productivity on days when they exercised at lunchtime and days when they did not exercise. Sixty percent said their job performance, including their ability to meet deadlines and manage their time, improved by a considerable amount on the days when they exercised.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: In regard to your recent article on a cat’s constant vomiting: I had the same issue with my cat. Stella was vomiting once or twice a day for several weeks. I couldn’t figure out why; there was no issue with new rugs or furniture. When they sprayed the lawns in our complex, I made sure not to track anything into the house. And Stella was an indoor cat, so she wasn’t being exposed to other cats. I got her in to see her vet, who ran tests and blood work and found nothing seriously wrong. The vet said that Stella might have GERD (acid reflux), and to give her one-quarter of a 10 mg famotidine pill each day. I cut each pill into fourths and give it to her in the morning with a little treat. It works perfectly; Stella no longer vomits repeatedly and has been doing well for the past two years. She gets a check-up every year at the vet and comes through with flying colors. Perhaps the owner could run this possibility by her vet and see what they think! -- Sande G., Webster, New York DEAR SANDE: That is certainly a possibility! Readers, be sure to check in with the veterinarian if your cat suffers from symptoms such as vomiting frequently or signs of distress after eating like excessive meowing or howling. Acid reflux is one possibility, but as Sande noted, it’s important to rule out more serious conditions. Be sure to ask plenty of questions at the vet’s office. Over-the-counter medications are a possibility, but keep in mind that formulations for humans contain larger dosages than a cat needs and may contain ingredients that are not great for your pets. The vet can advise you best. Does your cat take over-the-counter instead of prescription medications? Tell us about it at ask@pawscorner.com.

Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com. Page 33
