Thoughmorebuyersmaypreferto leasenewvehiclesoverpreowned vehicles, some prospective lessees consider leasing preownedautomobiles.According to the automotive resource Edmunds.com, many dealerships restrict their preowned lease inventory to vehicles that are less than four years old and have fewer than 48,000 miles. In addition, dealerships may only allow potential preowned lessees to lease vehicles that have been certified. Some drivers may prefer leasing preowned vehicles because the cost to do so can be considerably less than the cost to lease brand new vehicles. Those costsarelessforvariousreasons, including the preowned vehicle having a lower value and lower rate of depreciation than a brand new car or truck. Though many dealerships are willing to lease preowned vehicles, prospective lessees may find that more dealerships prefer leasing brand new vehicles than used models. Still, for potential lessees who intend to buy their vehicles at the end of their leases, preowned leases may make the best fit, as preowned leased vehicles will likely cost considerably less than to purchase when the lease expires than vehicles that were leasedbrandnew.

BUDGET-FRIENDLY WAYS TO UPGRADE A LANDSCAPE
Add a pop of color with planters. Awe-inspiring colors can make a landscape stand out from surrounding properties. Flowers, bushes and plants may be the first thing homeowners consider when trying to add color to their lawns, but planters can provide a more immediate way to give exterior grounds some color. Bold planters won’t lose their color in a matter of weeks like many flowers do, and homeowners can switch planters so the colors align with the season. For example, some pastel planters can evoke the spirit of spring, while orange planters can be filled with mums to give a landscape an autumnal feel.

SIMPLE WAYS TO WINTERIZE YOUR HOME
When temperatures get especially low, pipes with water still in them can freeze and burst, potentially leading to significant water damage. When you no longer need to water the lawn and when temperatures get too cold to wash your car in the driveway, be sure to shut off the water supply to outdoor spigots and sprinkler systems. Once you do that, drain them so no water is sitting in the pipes when temperatures dip.

Repair bald spots. Summer exacts a toll on lawns in various ways, and even homeowners with green thumbs may end up with a lawn filled with bald spots come September. Autumn is a great time to repair these bald spots. Lawn repair mixes like Scotts® PatchMaster contain mulch, seed and fertilizer to repair bald spots, which can begin to recover in as little as seven days. Before applying such products, remove dead grass and loosen the top few inches of soil. Follow any additional manufacturer instructions as well.

HOW
Use the technology at your disposal. If the grass is still growing, you can use a mulching mower to take care of some of the leaves. The mower will shred the leaves and create nutrients for the soil and the lawn. However, once the lawn stops growing you do not want to cut it too short. This is when it is time to take out the rake.
Autumn burned brightly, a running flame through the mountains, a torch flung to the trees.

Methinks I see the sunset light flooding the river valley, the western hills stretching to the horizon, overhung with trees gorgeous and glowing with the tints of autumn—a mighty flower garden, blossoming under the spell of the enchanter, Frost...

* On Oct. 5, 1892, the Dalton Gang attempts the simultaneous daylight robbery of two Coffeyville, Kansas, banks, but are surrounded by townspeople, who kill every gang member except for Emmett Dalton. Emmett was convicted and sentenced to life in prison. Paroled after 14 years, he ended up as a screenwriter in Hollywood.
* On Oct. 6, 1926, Yankee slugger Babe Ruth hits a record three home runs against the St. Louis Cardinals in the fourth game of the World Series. In 1928, in the fourth game of another Yanks-Cards World Series, he knocked three more pitches out of the same park.
* On Oct. 10, 1985, the hijacking of the Italian cruise ship Achille Lauro ends when U.S. Navy F-14 fighters intercept an Egyptian airliner attempting to fly the Palestinian hijackers to freedom. On Oct. 7, heavily armed terrorists had hijacked the ship and 400 crewmembers and passengers.
DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 71-year-old healthy female who has struggled with my weight all my life. In the ‘90s, I thought I had finally found the solution in fen-phen. It was like a miracle! It took all the nagging thoughts of food out of my brain. My question is, with all the drug ads on TV every day blithely showing the many side effects leading up to -- and including -death, why can’t we use fen-phen? I worked in a hospital where a very large number of employees were taking it with great results. I never heard a hint about anything that could affect someone’s health.
Also, I talked to many of the other patients at the doctor’s office where I was receiving it. Everyone was overjoyed with the results. I had no temptations and no constant yammering in my brain to eat something. As I said, it was a miracle. I felt like a normal person. So, why are all of these drug companies allowed to advertise their products, but one drug that truly worked had to get snatched away from us? -- M.H.
ANSWER: Fen-phen was a combination of fenfluramine and phentermine, which was approved for use in 1986. Approximately 18 million prescriptions were written for this medicine until 1987, when an association was made between the use of fen-phen and valve diseases of the heart. These cases were reported with fenfluramine or with the related dexfenfluramine alone, but never with phentermine alone. (Phentermine remains on the market.) Approximately 150 cases were reported.
Subsequent studies estimated that seven out of 10,000 people who took fenfluramine or fen-phen for less than four months developed valve disease, while 35 in 10,000 people who took fenfluramine or fen-phen for more than four months developed valve disease. They were compared to people who either took phentermine alone or did not use a weight-loss medicine.
The U.S. Food and Drug Adminstration determined that the risk of valve disease (some being severe enough to prompt valve replacement surgery) was too high, so the FDA asked manufacturers to remove these drugs from the market.
I fully understand your perspective. Some people are willing to take the risk of a side effect because the benefit of the medicine is so great. In my opinion, people should have the option of making their own decision, but in this case, the FDA felt that the risk was too high.
I have not seen a medicine for weight loss as effective as fenphen until recently, when semaglutide (Wegovy and Ozempic) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro, not yet approved for weight loss) became available. Just as you say, many of my patients report that they were able to easily control their eating while on these medicines, and as of the time I am writing, there have not been any serious adverse effects of taking these drugs, although there are plenty of milder effects.
However, these medicines only work when you continue to take them, and stopping them generally results in rapid regain of the weight that was lost. It’s important to realize that if you take a weight-loss drug, you’re making a commitment to a long-term treatment.

Hiking is a fun activity that can be enjoyed nearly year-round, but it’s especially enjoyable in the fall. That’s because few things in nature are as captivating as a park or forest when the fall foliage is in full bloom. Early fall also boasts ideal temperatures for hiking, as the mercury likely won’t rise enough or sink low enough to produce the kind of extreme temperatures that can compromise a hiker’s afternoon. Instead, fall temperatures tend to be mild and comfortable, allowing hikers to fully enjoy their often beautiful surroundings.

We are putting a healthy and yummy spin on caramel sauce for dipping your apples! We are using dates in this SUPER EASY recipe. Ask an adult to help you make this.
What are dates?
Dates are the fruit of the date palm tree, which is grown in many tropical regions of the world. They are chewy with a sweet flavor and are a good source of fiber, potassium, iron, and antioxidants. Eating dates can help improve digestive health, lower cholesterol levels, reduce inflammation, and support healthy brain function.
Fun
The first cookbook written in English was “The Forme Of Cury,” compiled by chefs of King Richard II in 1390.
1950s: Invention of the caramel apple
A Kraft Foods employee, Dan Walker, was credited with this delicious caramel dunked apple treat.
16 Medjool Dates, pitted
Facts recipe
¾ cup unsweetened plant-based milk
1 tsp sea salt
1 tsp vanilla extract
Add all ingredients (starting with the milk) into a high powered blender or food processor and blend until mixture is smooth and no date chunks are detectable. Add more milk, 1–2 tablespoons at a time, if needed to help the blending process or to thin the caramel to your liking. Use immediately or store in the fridge for later.

Here’s a tip
• Two tips for sewing buttons: First, for pants buttons, use unwaxed dental floss. It’s incredibly strong and can take a lot of abuse. Second, slip a pin between the button and the fabric before sewing on. When you’re finished, remove the pin. e button has some room behind it, and it will last longer.
• is is a tip for us singletons. I love whipped topping on my hot chocolate, but it doesn’t always last in my fridge. I buy a tub of it, and spoon it into mug-size dollops on a cookie sheet lined with wax paper. When the sheet is full, I freeze them. ey can be peeled off easily and slipped in a container or plastic bag. When I make my hot chocolate, I plop one in straight from the freezer. It takes only minutes to so en and melt. And it’s delicious!

RAKING LEAVES: While raking leaves might not jump out at you as a great way to spend a nice fall afternoon, families often find raking leaves together soon turns into a fun day in the yard. Build leaf piles and let the kids jump in, and then do it again. When raking, encourage kids to collect some colorful leaves and set them aside. Once the raking is done, you can then enjoy making some homemade crafts with the leaves you and your youngsters just collected.

A Man of Many Instruments, Ben Hockenberry Harmonizes in the Rochester Music Scene
BY SUZIE WELLS
In the bustling halls of St. John Fisher University, Ben Hockenberry wears many hats. As the Head of Library Systems and Subscriptions, he navigates the world of academia with precision and expertise. He recently published a study on the effects on institutional database subscriptions when articles are published outside of a ‘journal issue.’ He is an expert at his day job, but what makes him particularly admirable is his variety of self-taught musical prowess. Ben is deeply embedded in the vibrant Rochester music scene.
Within Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann, the Irish Musicians Association, Ben served as the past Rochester Chapter Chairperson and Public Relations Officer, and currently fills the crucial role of Youth Protection Officer. He coordinates and plays in demonstration bands for the Comhaltas chapter, and performs for Irish, Contra, and English dances in various combinations. His band Rós Gorm, with Ben Goehring, Peri Malone, and Ella Powers, most recently played at the Niagara Celtic Festival.
For Ben, the heart of his musical passion lies in the intimate setting of Irish sessions. e last Sunday of each month finds him at Johnny’s in Rochester, where musicians gather to share melodies and create magic. It’s in these informal gatherings that Ben finds a special kind of musical communion. He says he “loves the community of players, being able to communicate with other musicians without words.” He also likes to play for dancers. And for him, solo practice is a sort of meditation against the stresses of life.
Ben plays an incredibly wide array of instruments. While he modestly claims to play “too many instruments” (tin whistle, button accordion, bodhrán [the Irish drum], bouzouki, ukelele, guitar, and bass), his primary focus lies on the tenor (4-string) banjo and the mandolin, which share the same tuning as a fiddle, allowing Ben to play melodies in any key and easily facilitate playing chords.
Ben says he can get creative and improvise more with the tenor banjo and mandolin because he’s more experienced with them, but he enjoys the sound of the accordion (though he must work harder to get the button accordion to play what’s in his head, he says). inking about his musical journey, Ben admits that he only dabbled in music as a kid (trombone for a month, drums for a few lessons, a little piano here and there), but nothing stuck. In high school, he sang in a few musicals. en in college, he hung out with folks from the Geneseo String Band, who took him to an Irish session in Rochester, where he says, “I caught the bug. From there, I picked up bass, mandolin, and banjo, and the rest is history.”
Around 2014, Ben started teaching an Association-led mixedinstrument melody workshop in an annual series Comhaltas ran at Nazareth College. He started teaching private lessons over the next couple of years, expanding his network and spreading music. Now, Ben teaches a class at Fisher that leads students through Irish history and culture while teaching them some tin whistle and dance along the way.
Even without childhood musical roots, Ben has been writing notation, tablature, and ABCs for tunes and technical exercises for
students for a while now. He says, “I’m a fan of ear learning methods, but want to provide materials to learners in whatever ways they find most manageable.” So, he started adding staff notation to his audio tracks for Learners Sessions about five years ago, and about a year or two ago added mandolin/tenor banjo tablature to his YouTube videos in response to requests from one of his social media communities.
Ben says his most notable musical moment may be the first time Lynn Pilaroscia, patriarch of the local Irish ceili band, invited Ben to play in the band. “It was a huge honor,” Ben says. Ben stepped in to coordinate the band when Lynn stepped back, and Ben has enjoyed inviting other young musicians to experience the joy of playing for
To budding musicians, Ben says, “Find music you love, don’t be afraid to make a fool of yourself, and play out with others whenever
He looks forward to bringing back the annual free music/dance workshop day this fall, tentatively scheduled for November 5 at East Rochester High School, partnering with ERSD’s Roisin Dubh
Check out Ben’s Irish set dancing group at Irondequoit Recreation Center at 6:30 every Monday night; Johnny’s session every Last Sunday of the Month; and mark your calendars for his next Contra Dance with Ben Goehring and Barb Seppeler at e Well on Empire Blvd on October 20 at 6pm.

Magnificent Autumn! He comes not like a pilgrim, clad in russet weeds. He comes not like a hermit, clad in gray. But he comes like a warrior, with the stain of blood upon his brazen mail. His crimson scarf is rent.... The wind.... wafts to us the odor of forest leaves, that hang wilted on the dripping branches, or drop into the stream. Their gorgeous tints are gone, as if the autumnal rains had washed them out. Orange, yellow, and scarlet, all are changed to one melancholy russet hue.... There is a melancholy and continual roar in the tops of the tall pines.... It is the funeral anthem of the dying year.
~Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

I live in a small community that is 62 and over and disabled. Recently our community has been taken over by a new company which no one within our facility has seen, met, or even heard about. We only know of the name, and yet that doesn’t even to seem to be the truth! Everyone here is a little scared because we don’t know what’s going on and from inside information everyone’s checks have not been cashed for rent. We have no one in the office and no maintenance! There are three communities that this supposed company bought and they too are in arms about the situation. Our grass is getting a little out of hand, and being a disabled community, people are a bit scared, and no one has any answers for us. Please help us!

PAW’S CORNER
How Long Will Dog’s Heatstroke Recovery Take?
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Two weeks ago, my Golden Retriever Lollie suffered a heatstroke. I let him outside into the backyard around midmorning. When I checked on him a er about a half hour, he stumbled to me and collapsed. I rushed him to the veterinarian, where he was treated. Lollie is recovering, but I am terrified to let him outside again. Why did he have problems so fast? Will this episode affect his health long-term? -- Greg in Houston
DEAR GREG: I’m glad to hear that Lollie is recovering, because heatstroke can be deadly -- as you know. Your fear is normal, because you’re clearly a caring pet owner, and you don’t want Lollie to be injured again.
at care and attention is perhaps the biggest factor in Lollie recovering fully and having fewer long-term complications from his heatstroke.
e reasons why Lollie suffered heatstroke aren’t as clear, but there are so many factors that could have contributed to it. e morning may have been hotter than usual. Lollie may have had an underlying illness that made it harder for him to withstand the warmer temperature. He might not have drunk as much water as he needed to maintain his internal temperature.
You did all the right things: letting him outside earlier in the day; checking on him periodically; and immediately taking him to the vet as soon as you saw his symptoms were serious.
Keep following the vet’s instructions to support Lollie’s care as he recovers. It may be weeks or months before he can spend the same time in the heat. He’ll get tired more easily, so his daily walks should be kept short. Make sure he’s eating and drinking enough water. All these factors will improve his health for the long term.

BRAIN-HEALTHY HABITS TO EMBRACE
Cognitive decline is a condition that is often associated with aging, but even middle-aged people can experience memory loss or cognition issues.
The Alzheimer’s Association says that more than five million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. By 2050, that number could rise to as high as 16 million people. More than 747,000 Canadians are living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia, says the Canadian Alzheimer’s Association.
Although there is no definitive way to prevent dementia, living a long, vibrant life may be possible by encouraging some healthy habits for the brain. It is never too late or too early to begin health and lifestyle changes.
Exercise: Becoming more active can improve brain volume, reduce risk for dementia and improve thinking and memory skills. The journal Neurology found that older people who vigorously exercise performed better on cognitive tests than others of the same age, placing them at the equivalent of 10 years younger. Increased blood flow that occurs with physical activity may help generate new neurons in the hippocampus, an area of the brain involved with learning and memory.
The Harvard Medical School says aerobic exercise may help improve brain tissue by improving blood flow and reducing the chances of injury to the brain from cholesterol buildup in blood vessels.
Quit smoking: The Alzheimer’s Association indicates that evidence shows smoking increases the risk of cognitive decline. Smoking can impair blood flow to the brain and cause small strokes that may damage blood vessels.
Eat healthy foods: Foods that are good for the heart and blood vessels also are good for the brain. These include fresh fruits and vegetables,
whole grains, fish-based proteins, unsaturated fats, and foods containing omega-3 fatty acids. Neurologists state that, while research on diet and cognitive function is limited, diets, such as Mediterranean and Mediterranean-DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension), may contribute to a lower risk of cognitive issues.
Consume caffeine: Caffeine may help boost memory performance and brain health. A Journal of Nutrition study found people ages 70 and older who consumed more caffeine scored better on tests of mental function than those who consumed less caffeine. Caffeine may help improve attention span, cognitive function and feelings of well-being. Information from Psychology Today also indicates caffeine may help in the storage of dopamine, which can reduce feelings of depression and anxiety. In addition, compounds in cocoa and coffee beans may improve vascular health and help repair cellular damage due to high antioxidant levels.
Work the brain: Engaging in mentally stimulating activities can create new brain connections and more backup circuits, states Dr. Joel Salinas, a neurologist at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital. Working the brain through puzzles, reading and participating in social situations can stimulate the release of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a molecule essential for repairing brain cells and creating connections between them.
A good way to combine these lifestyle factors is to take an exercise class with friends, mixing the social, stimulation and exercise recommendations together.
Cognitive decline can come with aging, but through healthy habits, people can reduce their risk of memory loss and dementia.
