Certain insects can be dangerous to animals and plants. The following are a handful of insects that can threaten the vitality of gardens. • Aphids: These insects suck on the juice needed to sustain plants, particularly when they congregate. • Bald-faced hornet: Hornets tend to be an aggressive species that can sting repeatedly. Should you find a nest near an entertaining space or garden, it can cause trouble. • Carpenter ants: These ants will burrow into wood causing damage. They may compromise any wooden structure in and around a home. • Locusts: Various species of locust can damage plants and crops due to their voracious appetites. • Treehoppers: These small, green insects mimic the look of leaves, and their appetites can affect crops and gardens.

Income guidelines are:

Family of 1 $29,928 Family of 2 $39,144 Family of 3 $48,380 Family of 4 $57,564

• Red pavement ant: As they feed on all manner of human food, these ants can quickly overtake areas with their staggering numbers and deliver painful bites. • Grasshoppers: Certain grasshoppers, like the redlegged grasshopper, can decimate food crops and transfer parasites to birds when eaten as prey. • Caterpillars: Many caterpillars, the precursor to adult moths, will feed constantly on leaves, stems and other parts of plants. The tobacco hornworm moth caterpillar can damage potato and tomato plants.

When chemotherapy is taken by mouth or injected into a vein or muscle, the drugs enter the bloodstream and can reach cancer cells throughout the body (systemic chemotherapy). When chemotherapy is placed directly into the cerebrospinal fluid, an organ, or a body cavity such as the abdomen, the drugs mainly affect cancer cells in those areas (regional chemotherapy). The way the chemotherapy is given depends on the type and stage of the cancer being treated. Systemic chemotherapy is used in the treatment of breast cancer.

POTENTIAL CULPRITS BEHIND THINNING GRASS

PAINTING/PAPERING

Leaf spot The Center for Agriculture, Food and the Environment at the University of Massachusetts Amherst notes that leaf spot diseases affect both cool- and warm-season turfgrasses. Various fungi can cause leaf spot. Symptoms and the timing of the appearance of leaf spot will vary depending on which fungi is causing the problem. For example, bipolaris sorokiniana, which affects grasses in warm, wet summer months, produces small spots that are dark purple to black. Dreschslera poae is another fungi that causes leaf spot, and it also produces dark purple to black spots. However, it tends to appear in the spring when the weather is cool and moist. Understanding the different fungi and when they typically strike can help homeowners identify what is causing their grass to thin. In such situations, professional landscapers can be invaluable resources as well.

Have fuel ready Homeowners who heat their homes with oil, wood or coal should make sure they have plenty of fuel on hand in advance of winter. Shortages can occur, and it may take some time for new fuel to arrive in the midst of a cold snap. As a precaution, homeowners can rely on portable space heaters to fill in the heating gaps during freezing temperatures. Exercise extreme caution with these devices, turning them off when leaving the room and remembering to avoid overloading outlets. Page 7

LEAF PEEPING PLANNING GUIDE

Trust Your Roof to a Specialist

Pick your destination Anywhere with deciduous trees provides the opportunity to witness blazing autumn color. During leaf-peeping season, travelers can go coast to coast and see awesome vistas. Some regions are particularly known for their leaf displays. New York’s Catskill and Adirondack regions are prime spots for visitors in the autumn. Those who live further north will find that leaves in Vermont are such an attraction that routes are published indicating where to enjoy the best views. Further south, Central and Eastern Virginia peak in late October. And don’t forget the shores of the Great Lakes, which are awash in reds, oranges and yellows by mid-September. The travel resource Frommer’s offers more leaf-peeping locales to visit.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * There have been more than 300 different Kit Kat flavors in Japan, including soy sauce, “European cheese” and wasabi. Some of them are limited or regional editions. Because the candy bar’s name coincidentally sounds like the Japanese expression “Kitto Katsu,” which translates to “You will surely win,” it is a popular good-luck gift for students ahead of their university exams.

Q &A with the

HOW TO AVOID THE COLD COMFORT OF A DRAFTY HOUSE For those who live in older homes, the transition to colder weather can be extra disheartening, as the vision of expensive heating bills, chilly rooms and drafty windows dance in their heads. However, it’s easy to change the outlook from cold to cozy with a few simple DIY solutions. The most effective way to improve the comfort level in your home is to properly insulate. Insulation can be inadequate in older homes. Over time, it can settle and compact, creating gaps. Topping up attic insulation will help keep the warm air in, reducing heating bills and preventing stress on your furnace. For easy installation, homeowners and professionals alike recommend a stone wool batt insulation. For attics, aim for an r-value of R-50 or a depth of 16 inches. A little preparation can go a long way to keep the cold at bay. Seal out drafts by replacing worn weatherstripping and caulking along windows, doors, baseboards, and trim. For other ways to beat the cold, consider inexpensive window insulation kits along with thicker drapes, and don’t forget to reverse ceiling fans to push warm air back down.

Gardeners What is the best way to stop squirrels from eating the tomatoes when they are almost ready to pick. I tried peppermint oil spray; no luck. - Kathleen C. Physical exclusion may be a best choice. For a few plants, individual cages can be constructed from wire hardware cloth. Form a circular cage using the cut strands for hooks. Place it in the soil a few inches and stabilize with a stake driven in the ground. For a sizable patch of tomatoes, chicken wire fencing can be framed and installed to enclose the crop. SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Scammers' Tricks Are No Treat They never give up. Scammers are still taking every opportunity to steal our identity and separate us from our money, and the list keeps growing. Here are a few of the scams out there now: Seniors are getting calls from people who claim to be employees of the Department of Justice. Reports to the National Elder Fraud Hotline say that these scammers pretend to be investigators, and what they want is your personal information. If you get a call like this, don't be concerned that it's an authentic government call. It isn't. Just hang up. Maybe you'll get a call wanting to sell you an air purifier. They'll claim it will clean any coronavirus out of the air in your home. Maybe they'll try to get you to put it on a credit card, or they'll claim it's Medicare approved and all you need to do is give them your Medicare number. Don't fall for either of these tricks. Scammers will try these same tactics with miracle cures for COVID, masks that are "guaranteed" to protect you, face shields, vitamin supplements, free COVID tests, low-cost prescription drugs and much more. Sometimes scammers pretending to be from the government will try to get your personal information by saying they want to send you a stimulus check, or maybe they claim to need Census 2020 information. Sometimes it's about an expired warranty on your car or lower interest rates. Just hang up. Don't press 1 or any other number to have your number taken off their list. All that does is give them another opportunity to convince you to give up personal information. If someone you don't know leaves a message about any of these topics, ignore it. Remember that we seniors are the preferred target of these scammers. Don't fall for their tricks.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

OUTSTANDING COMMUNITY MEMBERS RECEIVE

Victor Women of Excellence Awards BY AMANDA DUDEK

I

n mid-August, three women were recognized for their leadership, volunteerism, and overall helpfulness within the Victor Community. They each received one of the Women of Excellence awards: the Student of Promise Award, the Lantern Award, and the Jikohnsaseh Woman of Excellence Award. Typically, winners are honored at an awards dinner held the third Wednesday in March; however, their recognition was delayed this year by the advent of COVID-19. Women of Excellence was established in 2012 and is based on Jikohnsaseh of Seneca Nation. Known as the Mother of Nations, Jikohnsaseh was a devoted leader to her people and was instrumental in bringing together the five disparate First People nations into the Iroquois Confederacy. Women of Excellence must echo her qualities such as her passion for peace between all people equally and her leadership and service in building and sustaining the Iroquois Confederacy. Contenders for this award are nominated by their peers throughout the year, and they must be women who take the time to lead, volunteer in, and promote the Victor area. This year saw quite a grouping of volunteers according to Pat Abbott of the Victor Chamber of Commerce. “The women feel honored to be nominated,” shared Abbott. “They do not expect to be recognized for what they are doing.” This year’s winners gathered for a small ceremony in Mead Square Park in Downtown Victor. In attendance were Amy DiPrima of Prima Pop and the Executive Director of the Victor Chamber of Commerce, Brad Pearson of the Simon School of Rochester and President of the Victor Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, Dawn Santiago-Marullo, retired Superintendent of Victor Central Schools, and Kathy Rayburn, Director of the Town of Victor Economic Development. Including its present winners, Women of Excellence has honored 24 women since its inception.

in community initiatives. 2020 nominees also included Danielle Petroske, Jenna Venturo, Kaitlin Sidare, Liliana D’Alessandro, and Sydney Prescott.

McKayla Streber won this year’s Student of Promise Award. The Student of Promise Award focuses on being a role model and celebrates young women ages 15-18 who attend school or live in Victor. Nominees must be dedicated to education while significantly contributing to the betterment of Victor and its surrounding communities. Achievements should include leadership, mentoring, activism, volunteerism and/or participation

Joan Trost took home the 2020 Lantern Award. The Lantern Award recognizes volunteerism and lifetime achievement. Celebrating women who have contributed significantly to the Victor community by volunteering and/or participating in community programs and initiatives, Lantern Award nominees must have demonstrated achievement in the areas of volunteerism, community activism, leadership and mentoring over an extended period of time. 2020 Lantern Award nominees also included Carol Commisso (Village of Victor), Elizabeth (Lisa) Roberts (Victor Hiking Trails), Heather McAdoo (Presbyterian Church), Jane Heath (VCS Bus Monitor), and Shari Schmidt (Eat Plants Love). Darlene Cowles secured the Jikohnsaseh Woman of Excellence Award. Focused on professional achievement, this award honors women who live and/or work in Victor, have reached a level of professional achievement that is impressive and/or has contributed significantly to her chosen career field while also excelling in the areas of leadership and mentoring. 2020 nominees also included Glenna Colaprete-Hudson (Glenna’s CBD Best Oil), Jennifer Demo (JD Financial), Karen Falbo (Boccacino Heating), Mary Walpole-Lightsey (Ontario County Bar Association), Michelle Kennison (Legacy at Fairways), and Robin Barclay (Safe at Home PT). “We wish everyone well, and we hope to see women continue to grow in our community,” said Abbott. Those wishing to make a nomination should contact the Victor Chamber of Commerce. LANDSCAPES We just want to say thank you so much for your dedication and hard work during these very difficult times, especially this year. It’s very unfortunate the landscapers are always overlooked and underappreciated! They put their bodies and health on the line for unfair wages. They work in all kinds of weather conditions along with hazardous conditions! These laborers need higher wages and more appreciation. Show your support, public! THANK YOU, GOOD SAMARITAN! Our son recently lost his wallet in a parking lot in Canandaigua.

He was just about to go through the time-consuming steps of replacing his license, debit card, and other typical wallet essentials. After almost giving up hope, imagine our surprise when the wallet-fully intact, and with all cash still there-turned up in our mailbox. Since we have no idea who his guardian angel is, this is the best we can do to thank him or her for their efforts and honesty. Not only did they model human kindness, they saved my son a world of headache. His first words were, “Now I guess I need to do a random act of kindness for a perfect stranger!” Yes, he plans to pay your good deed forward. In this chaotic and divided world,

it was wonderful to experience this act of selflessness. Thank you! FIVE STARS Five Star deserves five stars! I want to thank Stephani (hope name is spelled correctly) for assisting me with my banking transaction. In a world filled with so many stresses and sorrows, it was a delight conversing with Stephani. What a laugh we shared about her ring. We laughed so hard she actually turned red. Of course, I made a mistake with my withdrawal slipwith all the laughter that I had to do it all over, but it was worth it. Laughter goes a long way. It made my day, and I can’t wait to return to

BE GONE! To the people who attacked the person who complained about their neighbor’s loud music, shame on you for ganging up on someone who respects the town ordinance. Do you even know what kind of music that neighbor was playing? Do you just assume it’s the kind of music you like? Such ignorance to assume all music has the same effect on everyone! If your music is loud enough to rock your neighbor’s house, you are intruding! Period. If I want free concerts, I’d live next to a stadium. You were completely irresponsible to “suggest” that the original complainer move their residence in order to get some peace in their life. I suggest that you people find out who you all are, move into the same neighborhood, and play

your personal outdoor concerts against each other. MUSIC RULES One cannot exact “rules” that dictate peace and quiet. Next, would they like to get rid of children playing in a neighborhood? Perhaps they would have a problem with dogs barking. A lot of things are of precious value. One of them is the fact that for those who live in a neighborhood, they cannot monitor what people do, especially when we live where we have certain freedoms. If a person wants peace and quiet all the time, then go to a library. Problem solved! Maybe cars and motorcycles zooming by the road is infringing on their “peace and quiet.” Maybe they don’t like neighbors working on their house and making noise with a hammer or drill. The point

is you have to be realistic when it comes to noise, and it’s give and take, especially when it comes to being neighbors. NO RESPECT When did it become okay to enter a person’s private property and relieve yourself? I live outside of town surrounded by fields. Fields are perfect places to stop in those times of dire need. I have a son, and I remember those times that just seemed to come out of nowhere. “I have to go now!” is shouted from the back seat. You find the nearest, safest place to pull over. When did a person’s paved driveway become the acceptable place to do this? This hasn’t always been commonplace, just in the last year. First time was when a child was allowed to relieve himself right onto my driveway as cars passed by. The second time was

Five Star in Brockport. Perhaps I will see Stephani again and we will share another humorous moment. So, Stephani thanks for the lighthearted moment that we shared. My husband just shook his head when I told him about our conversation about your ring. That will be our private joke. BIG THANK YOU! A big thank you to the person walking on East Lake Road, Livonia on Monday, September 14th. You smelled a gas leak coming from my neighbor’s home and called RG & E. Your involvement meant the situation was resolved safely, so thank you again for all you did!

just today. A car entered my driveway, and the driver opened their door and proceeded to vomit on my driveway. I have cameras now! I work hard for what I have, and you have no right!

BREAST CANCER IS THE SECOND MOST COMMON TYPE OF CANCER IN AMERICAN WOMEN.

Presbyterian

Women in the United States get breast cancer more than any other type of cancer except skin cancer. Breast cancer is second to lung cancer as a cause of cancer death in American women. However, deaths from breast cancer have decreased a little bit every year between 2003 and 2012. Breast cancer also occurs in men, but the number of new cases is small. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Most patients with breast cancer have surgery to remove the cancer. Sentinel lymph node biopsy is the removal of the sentinel lymph node during surgery. The sentinel lymph node is the first lymph node to receive lymphatic drainage from a tumor. It is the first lymph node where the cancer is likely to spread. A radioactive substance and/or blue dye is injected near the tumor. The substance or dye flows through the lymph ducts to the lymph nodes. The first lymph node to receive the substance or dye is removed. A pathologist views the tissue under a microscope to look for cancer cells. After the sentinel lymph node biopsy, the surgeon removes the tumor using breast-conserving surgery or mastectomy. If cancer cells were not found in the sentinel lymph node, it may not be necessary to remove more lymph nodes. If cancer cells were found, more lymph nodes will be removed through a separate incision. This is called a lymph node dissection. Types of surgery include the following: • Breast-conserving surgery is an operation to remove the cancer and some normal tissue around it, but not the breast itself. Part of the chest wall lining may also be removed if the cancer is near it. This type of surgery may also be called lumpectomy, partial mastectomy, segmental mastectomy, quadrantectomy, or breast-sparing surgery. • Total mastectomy: Surgery to remove the whole breast that has cancer. This procedure is also called a simple mastectomy. Some of the lymph nodes under the arm may be removed and checked for cancer. This may be done at the same time as the breast surgery or after. This is done through a separate incision. • Modified radical mastectomy: Surgery to remove the whole breast that has cancer, many of the lymph nodes under the arm, the lining over the chest muscles, and sometimes, part of the chest wall muscles. Chemotherapy may be given before surgery to remove the tumor. When given before surgery, chemotherapy will shrink the tumor and reduce the amount of tissue that needs to be removed during surgery. Treatment given before surgery is called preoperative therapy or neoadjuvant therapy. Even if the doctor removes all the cancer that can be seen at the time of the surgery, some patients may be given radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or hormone therapy after surgery, to kill any cancer cells that are left. Treatment given after the surgery, to lower the risk that the cancer will come back, is called postoperative therapy or adjuvant therapy. If a patient is going to have a mastectomy, breast reconstruction (surgery to rebuild a breast’s shape after a mastectomy) may be considered. Breast reconstruction may be done at the time of the mastectomy or at some time after. The reconstructed breast may be made with the patient’s own (nonbreast) tissue or by using implants filled with saline or silicone gel.

BRAIN-HEALTHY HABITS TO EMBRACE Cognitive decline is a condition that is often associated with aging, but even middle-aged people can experience memory loss or cognition issues. The Alzheimer’s Association says that more than five million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. By 2050, that number could rise to as high as 16 million people. More than 747,000 Canadians are living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia, says the Canadian Alzheimer’s Association. Although there is no definitive way to prevent dementia, living a long, vibrant life may be possible by encouraging some healthy habits for the brain. It is never too late or too early to begin health and lifestyle changes. Exercise: Becoming more active can improve brain volume, reduce risk for dementia and improve thinking and memory skills. The journal Neurology found that older people who vigorously exercise performed better on cognitive tests than others of the same age, placing them at the equivalent of 10 years younger. Increased blood flow that occurs with physical activity may help generate new neurons in the hippocampus, an area of the brain involved with learning and memory. The Harvard Medical School says aerobic exercise may help improve brain tissue by improving blood flow and reducing the chances of injury to the brain from cholesterol buildup in blood vessels. Quit smoking: The Alzheimer’s Association indicates that evidence shows smoking increases the risk of cognitive decline. Smoking can impair blood flow to the brain and cause small strokes that may damage blood vessels. Eat healthy foods: Foods that are good for the heart and blood vessels also are good for the brain. These include fresh fruits and vegetables, GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

whole grains, fish-based proteins, unsaturated fats, and foods containing omega-3 fatty acids. Neurologists state that, while research on diet and cognitive function is limited, diets, such as Mediterranean and Mediterranean-DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension), may contribute to a lower risk of cognitive issues. Consume caffeine: Caffeine may help boost memory performance and brain health. A Journal of Nutrition study found people ages 70 and older who consumed more caffeine scored better on tests of mental function than those who consumed less caffeine. Caffeine may help improve attention span, cognitive function and feelings of well-being. Information from Psychology Today also indicates caffeine may help in the storage of dopamine, which can reduce feelings of depression and anxiety. In addition, compounds in cocoa and coffee beans may improve vascular health and help repair cellular damage due to high antioxidant levels. Work the brain: Engaging in mentally stimulating activities can create new brain connections and more backup circuits, states Dr. Joel Salinas, a neurologist at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital. Working the brain through puzzles, reading and participating in social situations can stimulate the release of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a molecule essential for repairing brain cells and creating connections between them. A good way to combine these lifestyle factors is to take an exercise class with friends, mixing the social, stimulation and exercise recommendations together. Cognitive decline can come with aging, but through healthy habits, people can reduce their risk of memory loss and dementia.

* Want a great way to clean around your faucets? The answer may be closer than you think! A worn-out toothbrush can do a much better job of cleaning fixtures than it can your teeth and gums. Simply brush the wet bristles of a toothbrush over the base and it’ll get in those nooks and crannies you can’t reach with a sponge. * Remove mildew from plastic shower curtains by spraying them with a mix of bleach and water, or just toss them in the washing machine with your next load of towels. * “We have a playroom, and the kids argue about who made what mess and who should pick up which toys. We made a cleaning schedule for the room, having one or two children per day responsible to clean up at the end of the day. It was a rough start, but the kids have learned to clean up as they go rather than leave a big mess for someone else (payback is not kind).” -– A.M. in Kentucky * If your vacuum has a paper filter, spray it with your favorite perfume or essential oil. It will blow into the air as you vacuum, leaving behind a pleasant scent. * “Need your nails to dry in a hurry? You can use the cool setting on your hair dryer. Flea protection that’s safe and affordable DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Flea prevention treatments can be expensive, so I’ve been soaking orange peels in rubbing alcohol and spraying it on my pets and around the house. It seems to work, but even though I can’t see a single flea on my Rottweiler-pit bull mix “Debbie,” she is still scratching fiercely around her ears until they bleed. I tried ear mite drops because I think that’s the problem, but she just runs away from me. I can’t afford the vet right now. How can I solve the ear mite problem? -- Melissa, via email DEAR MELISSA: Stop using the rubbing alcohol on your pets immediately. It dries out a dog’s skin and causes irritation, and isopropyl alcohol can even poison a pet. The oil from the orange peel can be an irritant, too. Put the ear mite treatment on pause. It’s not improving the condition and is causing Debbie distress. It’s time to visit the vet. I know it’s expensive, but if money is an issue, tell the vet’s office when you call for an appointment. Low-cost vet clinics also may be available in your area. You can find them by searching online, asking the vet’s office or checking with the local pet-supply store. But Debbie needs to see a vet right now, because she’s suffering. To continue flea prevention without breaking the bank, consider treating your home with a product called diatomaceous earth (about $10-$14 for a 10-pound bag). Sprinkle it into the carpet and leave it for 48 hours, then vacuum it up. Reapply about once a month. You can even rub it into Debbie’s fur to kill fleas -- but only after her skin problem has been dealt with, because DE will irritate open wounds.

LAURIE L. HARRIS NY Licensed Advisor (585) 905-9966

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Gluten-Free Foods Aren’t a Sales Gimmick ---

Medical • Medicare Dental • Vision • Disability Life • Annuities • LTC NY State of Health

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have no health issues, but I’m a cheapskate. I see products labeled as “grain-free” or as “gluten-free,” but they always cost more than the regular product. Are there any health benefits to using these, or are they marketing gimmicks? -- L.C. ANSWER: They are not marketing gimmicks at all. People with celiac disease have a sensitivity to a protein in gluten, called gliadin. Even small amounts of gluten can cause long-lasting damage to the intestines, and many people with celiac disease will be unable to properly absorb nutrients if they are regularly exposed to gluten. This can manifest with severe symptoms, such as weight loss, diarrhea and severe metabolic disturbance. Or it can trigger much milder ones, such as mild abdominal discomfort after eating, skin changes, anemia or joint pains. Because the symptoms of celiac disease are so varied, a physician must be fairly convinced it’s celiac before making the diagnosis. Biopsy is the gold standard for certainty, but blood testing -- if done while consuming a diet containing gluten -- is suggestive. I strongly recommend getting a diagnosis before going on a strict gluten-free diet if you suspect celiac disease. For people with diagnosed celiac disease, strict adherence to a gluten-free diet is essential, and the increasing availability of glutenfree foods has made the lives of people with celiac disease better. Many grains are gluten-free naturally. There are people with symptoms from gluten-containing foods but who do not have celiac disease. The term is “non-celiac gluten sensitivity.” Some people with this condition are sensitive to components of the food other than the gluten, although there are some people who are sensitive to gluten but do not have celiac disease. For people without NCGS and without celiac disease, avoiding gluten is not necessary. A diet with many different whole grains has been proven to reduce heart disease risk compared with a more meat-based diet. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Please discuss the problem of the thirst mechanism as it relates to the elderly. I’m 70 years old and in almost perfect physical health. I bicycle every day -- 75 miles each week. Even with this enormous physical exercise, I am never thirsty all day and night. Also, I do not perspire. I need to force myself to drink water. Why don’t I feel thirsty? -- M.U. ANSWER: Thirst is a powerful motivation. In people with an intact thirst mechanism, the desire for water can be overpowering; it’s one of the body’s main ways of regulating salt and volume in the body. You are exactly right that as people age, the thirst mechanism becomes less powerful, and that tends to leave older people with a slightly higher amount of salt in the body compared with younger people. Remembering to drink water, especially on hot days, reduces the risk of dehydration. However, people who drink continually may never trigger the thirst response. There are many social cues to drink, and people who are not losing fluid through exertion and sweat may never trigger a strong thirst response. Drinking too much is as dangerous as not drinking enough: If thirst is really impaired, you need to use other mechanisms to monitor fluid status. For example, needing to urinate every several hours (at least) is one way of staying in the right zone. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. IMPROVE ALERTNESS DURING THE WORKDAY Change your workout schedule. Regular exercise improves shortand long-term health while also increasing daily energy levels. Professionals who include exercise in their daily routines yet still suffer from a lack of alertness in the afternoon may need to alter their workout schedules. A 2011 study published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine found that participants who were assigned afternoon exercise programs during work hours reported increased productivity versus those who were not assigned afternoon workouts. If working out in the afternoon is not feasible, avoid working out too late at night, as the National Institutes of Health note that exercising within two to three hours of bedtime can disrupt sleep, ultimately having a negative impact on energy levels the following day.

1. Durability: Combining the strength of steel with the design versatility of crushed stone, stone-coated metal roofing offers a better-looking way to protect your investment. Thanks to its engineering, stone-coated metal stands up to harsh conditions, including fire, wind, hail, hurricanes, seismic activity, and extreme cold and heat.

TOP ROOFING TRENDS (NAPSI)—While replacing your roof can be expensive, it may pay to know more about increasingly popular stone-coated metal. There are five good reasons:

MRI is a procedure that uses a magnet, radio waves, and a computer to make a series of detailed pictures of areas inside the body. This procedure is also called nuclear magnetic resonance imaging (NMRI). MRI does not use any x-rays. MRI is used as a screening test for women who have one or more of the following: • Certain gene changes, such as in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes. • A family history (first degree relative, such as a mother, daughter or sister) with breast cancer. • Certain genetic syndromes, such as Li-Fraumeni or Cowden syndrome. MRIs find breast cancer more often than mammograms do, but it is common for MRI results to appear abnormal even when there isn’t any cancer.

2. Curb Appeal: Stone-coated metal comes in a collection of eye-catching contours and colors. Panels can resemble Mediterranean tile, hand-split wood shake, heavyweight shingle or even old-world Italian tile.

Puzzle Answers This Week

3. Long-Term Value: Stone-coated metal offers greater longevity— three—plus times more—and lower maintenance needs than most other roofing products. “In an average lifetime, a homeowner will need to replace an asphalt roof at least three times as often for the same cost of one stonecoated metal roof,” explained Mark Gallant, Vice President of New Product Development at DECRA Metal Roofing, the original stone-coated steel roofing system, with over 60 years of research and practical experience.

–– NAME

4. Keep It Cool: Metal roofing can help cool your home through air space between the panels and the roof deck, reducing heat transfer. Some roofing colors can also reflect unwanted solar heat. 5. Save Money: A stone-coated metal roof could net you a discount on your homeowners insurance. Check with your insurance agent. Overall, a stone-coated metal roof can help your home look better, feel more comfortable while you live in it and be easier to sell when you want to.
