Special Holiday Estate Sale Event
STRANGE BUT TRUE
This Estate Sale Event will feature 3 Rochester Family Estates.
By Lucie Winborne * In March 1980, multiple female students at Southern California universities complained that someone had surreptitiously painted their toenails while they studied in the library. The perp, dubbed “Leonardo da Toenail,” was caught but released, since police hadn’t discovered him in the act. Apprehended again a year later, he was ordered to a hearing at the city attorney’s office but didn’t show up and was never seen again.
Unique pieces, art, statuary, furniture & more.
* Academically gifted actress Sharon Stone skipped both kindergarten and first grade, entering second grade at age 5.
Held at the
Jerris-Wadsworth Estate
* At least six ravens are kept at the Tower of London at all times, due to an old superstition that says: “If the ravens leave the Tower, the Kingdom will fall.” The birds even have part of a wing clipped so if they do decide to fly around, they won’t get very far.

CHRISTMAS TREES BRIGHTEN THE SEASON Decked out in tinsel, lights, ornaments, and garland, Christmas trees are enduring symbols of the holiday season that boast a rich history.

Evergreen trees have been used to celebrate winter festivals for thousands of years, and eventually became associated with Christianity. Plants and trees that remained green all year held special meaning to ancient peoples, and were purported to keep away illness and evil spirits. Germans were credited with tying evergreen trees to Christmas celebrations. In the sixteenth century, devout Christians brought decorated trees into their homes. Martin Luther, the Protestant reformer, is believed to have first added lighted candles to these trees after he was inspired by twinkling stars in the night sky. While early Americans found Christmas trees an oddity, the tradition, brought over by German settlers, eventually caught on. Today, between 25 and 30 million natural Christmas trees are sold in the United States each year, states the National Christmas Tree Association. Trees are grown in all 50 states and Canada.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Nov. 18, 1883, American and Canadian railroads begin using four continental time zones to end the confusion of dealing with thousands of local times. Most Americans and Canadians quickly embraced their new time zones, however, it was not until 1918 that Congress officially adopted the railroad time zones. STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne
INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT FALL The colors of fall foliage are actually present year-round. Fall is known for its colorful foliage. But the pigments responsible for those colors are actually present year-round. According to the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, green, yellow and orange pigments are present year-round. However, during spring and summer, the leaves serve as factories where many foods necessary to help the tree grow are manufactured. That process takes place in the leaf in cells containing chlorophyll, which gives the leaves their green color. This process ceases as hours of daylight decrease and temperatures drop. As a result, chlorophyll breaks down, the green color disappears and the vivid colors of fall foliage begin to appear.

Veterans Day Livonia students wrote messages to Veterans which were displayed at the American Legion Post 283 luncheon after the 11am ceremony at Livonia Library. Nice speech CC. Thank you Stacey and Mike for bringing and setting out the sheets. Thank you to all the students for the messages and drawings, especially Abigail for the long, touching message with such beautiful handwriting! It was very much appreciated to honor the Veterans on Veterans Day!! God Bless everyone and God Bless America.
Grateful for huge hearts! Two weeks ago I posted a need in the “Give & Take” section for unused cards with envelopes to send to participants in our Catholic Charities of Buffalo older adult programs in Genesee, Orleans and Erie Counties. So many wanted to help and we want to say a HUGE THANK YOU! We received so many donations of cards that our storage area is at capacity! I apologize that I wasn’t able to individually respond to every call left as there were so many. Those whose cards weren’t able to be donated, please consider offering them to a skilled nursing facility or adult day program where they can be used to brighten the day of an older adult who may be spending their birthdays and holidays without those they love. The big hearts of people in our WNY community make us so proud to do the work we do to serve those in need.
Free School Supplies and Meals The budget for the [local school] District has been approved for 20232024, which includes supplies and free meals for all students. I had three children attend [local school] and had to purchase all their school supplies and meals. Now I’m a Senior Citizen on Social Security with a fixed income, and I should not have to pay for these free supplies and meals. Voters, compare your 2022 taxes with 2023 taxes. My school taxes have gone up 21%, yet Social Security only went up 3.2%. Why should Senior Citizens have to pay so much? We have already paid our share. The Superintendent and the School Board need to address this issue.
Plowing Fields Will farmers with tractors, especially big tractors, after leaving the field onto the roads, stop and move the huge chunks of mud left on the road. Some were over a foot and a half around. I saw numerous vehicles who had to maneuver around these. Oncoming traffic plus the damage to their vehicles could be serious. I went out with one other driver and cleared what we could off the driving surface. With all these home cameras, if something serious happens, I’m sure you would be responsible. Also, if you do, please don’t roll them down on homeowners lawns. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

SAFETY IN NUMBERS: WHY IT PAYS TO REPLACE HEADLIGHT BULBS IN PAIRS Why replace aging headlight bulbs? Few drivers include headlight bulb replacement in their vehicle maintenance routines. But old headlight bulbs can drastically compromise visibility at night, when drivers’ visual acuity is naturally reduced by as much as 70 percent. As headlight bulbs age, the effects of exposure to sunlight, ozone and pollution can significantly reduce their light output. According to Philips Automotive, a leading manufacturer of vehicle lighting components, headlight bulbs begin to project significantly less light within two to three years of their initial usage, producing dimmer light outputs that compromise the safety of drivers and their passengers. For example, new headlight bulbs capable of projecting 240-foot beams in front of a vehicle may see that projection dwindle to just 160 feet within two to three years.

Here’s a Tip OK, I’ll say it: I love tradition, but sometimes I want to mix it up for Thanksgiving dinner. I keep the main dishes the same as they always are, but I add my drama in the details. For instance, mix your choice of herbs into a stick of softened butter. Using a plastic baggie with the corner cut off or a decorating bag, pipe the herbed butter onto a butter dish. Refrigerate and enjoy the oohs and ahs. -- JoAnn “In the week before Thanksgiving, have a leftovers day and get all those bits and pieces out of the refrigerator. It will make it easier to clean so you’ll have room for the turkey and the sides.” -- S.T. in South Carolina “For easier cooking, when making large holiday meals, simply choose two side dishes that can be oven cooked in the same amount of time at an average temperature. I like one or two that can be cooked in the microwave as well.” (c) 2023 King Features Synd., Inc.

How to Distinguish Heart Disease Symptoms From Panic Attacks --DEAR DR. ROACH: How can you tell with at least a moderate degree of certainty that you might really have a heart or blood pressure problem, as opposed to just having an anxiety attack that is less serious? -- D.S. ANSWER: A panic attack is an abrupt change in mental state. They are usually unexpected, sometimes with or without identifiable triggers. Symptoms of a panic attack vary from person to person, but among the most common are feelings of heart palpitations; sweating; trembling or shaking; shortness of breath; chest pain or discomfort; dizziness; numbness or a “pins and needles” feeling; abdominal pain or nausea; feeling abnormally hot or cold; feeling detached from oneself or from reality; and a fear of dying, losing control or “going crazy.” Most of us have had some of these feelings from time to time, and some of these symptoms are identical to ones of heart disease, specifically of angina pectoris -- the classic symptom of poor blood flow to the heart. There are many conditions, both medical and psychiatric, that can cause these symptoms as well, so acquiring a moderate degree of certainty isn’t always easy. A very careful history exam helps. With chest pain due to heart disease, for example, symptoms are commonly brought on by exertion; whereas with a panic disorder, there might not be a trigger, or it may be triggered by psychological stress. Some people have highly specific triggers, such as open spaces or needles. Some people can trigger a panic attack just by worrying that they are going to have one. The time course of the symptoms can be very helpful. With a panic attack, the attack starts, and chest discomfort (for example) will then occur. In people with heart disease, chest discomfort starts, and then people will get anxious. I had a wise cardiology professor who told me to always consider heart disease even if a person’s history is suggestive of a panic attack. I generally check their blood pressure and order an electrocardiogram, blood testing (including thyroid tests) and sometimes other tests when considering the diagnosis of a panic attack. There is very effective treatment available for people with panic disorder (people with recurrent unexpected panic attacks that lead to avoidant behaviors), both through therapy and medication. But your question implies that being pretty sure of the diagnosis is wise before dismissing the possibility of cardiac disease or other medical diseases. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. DID YOU KNOW? Men and women often make an effort to lose weight before special events such as weddings or vacations. While many people do so in healthy ways, others take their weight loss efforts to the extreme. For example, many brides-to-be aspire to shed excess weight before their weddings so they can look as slim as possibly in their wedding gowns. The New York Times even reported in 2012 on a bride who spent eight days on a feeding tube to strictly limit calories so she could fit into her wedding dress. Such efforts are dangerous and could put individuals’ long-term health in serious jeopardy. Healthy weight loss for any occasion requires a long lead time, so that individuals can safely shed between one and two pounds per week with a healthy mix of diet and exercise, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Trimming between 500 and 1,000 calories per day from their diets can help individuals lose weight safely.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Beau
This is . He loves playing with balloons and loves tug of war. He loves his younger brother, Cricket, and his older sister, Lilmiss. His mom is his favorite person and he’s always with her. He’s the bestest boy we could’ve asked for.
Shaggy Dogs Aren’t Impervious to Cold Weather DEAR PAW’S CORNER: On my morning walks, I’ve noticed that someone in a house down the street puts their dog outside, tied to the porch railing, with only a pan of water. They stay out there all morning. Now that the weather has turned cold, I still see this dog tied up every morning outside. Even with a shaggy coat, the dog is shivering. What can I do to stop this? -- Francesca W., via email DEAR FRANCESCA: If this person isn’t someone you know, and you’re nervous about knocking on their door to talk to them about it, then contact the animal control department for your town, city or county. If you live in an area where there is no animal control unit, call the nearest shelter or Humane Society to make a report. In cold temperatures, even temps above freezing, dogs can suffer a cold injury. Their paws and noses -- any exposed skin -- are at risk for frostbite. Hypothermia can be deadly, or it can permanently impair their immune system and overall health. A thick coat doesn’t provide as much protection from the cold as one might think. Many cities have laws against leaving pets out in extreme cold or heat. And tying up a dog outside, even for a few hours, is also unacceptable. If no one else is saying anything about it, go ahead and make some noise by calling any organization that can help and finding out where you can go to make it happen even faster. Thank you for paying attention to and helping that dog out. Readers, have you dealt with a similar situation? Tell us about it at ask@pawscorner.com.

Student of the World: Berdjouhi Esmerian BY DENISE THOMPSON SLAUGHTER
B
orn to Armenian parents in Alexandria, Egypt, Berdjouhi Esmerian came to the United States at the age of thirty. Berdjouhi has always loved to write and, when she retired, she began working on her memoirs. So Many Homelands: Memories of a Daughter of the Armenian Diaspora was published just before the pandemic shutdown and was favorably reviewed recently in Lake Affect Magazine. Some of Berdjouhi’s stories have appeared in anthologies published by Writers and Books in Rochester and in the journal Blue Lyra Review. She also has co-authored, with three friends, According to Us: Four Older Women Tell Their Stories. She writes mostly of her life while growing up in the Middle East, from Egypt to Lebanon, during many historical events.
Although each of her parents’ families were wise enough to emigrate from their native Armenian homeland to Egypt in 1910—five years before the Armenian Genocide began and a couple decades before Berdjouhi’s birth—they did lose relatives in the extended genocide. In a gasp-out-loud episode in her book, Berdjouhi’s uncle had tragic timing when he stopped off in post-Ottoman Turkey to visit relatives on his return to the U.S. from Egypt. Just after his arrival in Turkey, the massacres there began, and, as a result of the upheaval, he was not allowed to re-board the ship because his passport showed he had been born on what was now Turkish soil, so he was considered a Turkish citizen. He was killed in Smyrna in Turkey’s 1922 massacre of Armenians and Greeks before he could ever get out of the country. Berdjouhi was six and living in Alexandria, Egypt, when the Second World War began, and remembers air raids, bombings, and casualties. After their home was destroyed, the family moved to Cairo. This would not be the last time the Esmerians relocated to flee violent political crises. To this day, Berdjouhi’s chest tightens up whenever she hears fireworks or other loud noises that remind her of anti-aircraft guns.
GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111
In Egypt, Berdjouhi attended a secular German school and, a year later, Armenian schools in Cairo and Alexandria. These schools taught multiple languages—Arabic, French, and English were all required subjects—and Berdjouhi discovered she had a gift for languages and a particular fondness for English. Her father, who owned a tool-and-die workshop, was unusual for the time and region in that he wanted his daughter to be as well educated as her brother and able to support herself if necessary. So her education was rounded off at a Scottish school in Egypt and, after the Suez Crisis in Egypt, in Lebanon at Beirut’s Haigazian College and then the Beirut College for Women (now Lebanese American University). After graduation, she hurried away to escape the civil war starting there. Sadly, she was unable to make it home in time to say goodbye to her father, who died in Egypt in April of 1960. Later, she went back to Lebanon for graduate studies at the American University of Beirut. Berdjouhi then taught English at girls’ schools in Cairo and Beirut. Finally, but not easily, she was able to join her brother, who had been able to come to the United States. She lived in New Jersey with her aunt and uncle, working in clerical positions at Western Electric for a couple years, then moved to Rochester to live near her newly married brother in a tiny apartment on University Avenue. After discovering that schools were not willing to hire a foreigner as an English teacher, even though her English was more proficient than many Americans’, Berdjouhi quickly got a job as a proofreader at The Lawyers’ Co-operative Publishing Company, where she would gradually work her way up to a department manager position. The plans for Berdjouhi’s mother to join her had been delayed when Egypt’s President Nasser established a rule that females could not leave the country until they reached 60 years of age. Finally, though, in May 1968, Mrs. Esmerian arrived to live with her daughter. These bare-bones biographical facts barely begin to cover Berdjouhi’s life, though, as they leave out so much about her family, relationships, and more personal experiences. They leave out her dignified bearing, small stature, sweet smile, philosophical nature, and her warm kindly personality. Now in independent senior living in a 55+ community where she organized a writers’ group, Berdjouhi recently turned 90. In spite of struggling with vision and hearing issues, she is still clear-thinking and active in her apartment community, where she is considered a treasure. As she continues going through boxes of papers that she brought with her when she sold her house in Brighton, she is considering putting together some earlier writings in order to make another book about her many thoughts and experiences.

According to the American Osteopathic Association, one in five teenagers will now experience some form of hearing loss. That rate is roughly 30 percent higher than it was 20 years ago. Though various factors have contributed to that increase, the AOA notes that many experts believe an increased use of headphones among teenagers is partly to blame. Listening to headphones at high volumes for extended periods of time can lead to lifelong hearing loss for children and teens. Parents can encourage children and teenagers to listen to music at reasonable levels when using their headphones, and one effective way to control volume without sacrificing sound is to use over-the-ear headphones instead of earbuds. The Cleveland Clinic notes that over-theear headphones are generally more effective than earbuds at cancelling outside noise. That allows over-the-ear headphone users to listen to music at lower volumes, which can significantly reduce their risk for noise-induced hearing loss.

Conservation is an essential component of an eco-friendly lifestyle. Conserving the planet’s natural resources can have a profound impact on the planet, and conserving at home is a great way for men and women to get the ball rolling on their conservation efforts. One of the most effective ways to conserve at home is to reduce water consumption. Few people give much thought to how much water they consume at home, as water bills tend to be considerably lower than other utilities like energy and phone. But even if efforts to conserve water at home may not make a dramatic impact on monthly utility bills, many measures can go a long way toward preserving one of the planet’s most precious resources.

HOW TO M AKE THANKSGIVING DINNER HEALTHIER Cut dow n on bread. Bread can be both delicious and filling. But bread is often full of empty calories, particularly if you’re eating refined, w hite breads. Opt for less bread in stuffing recipes and incorporate more celery, raisins, cranberries, and apples to give bulk to the stuffing. Choose w holegrain rolls and crackers to complement the main course.

533-9307 • Call for free estimate GET YOUR HOME FALL- AND WINTER-READY One of the easiest and most effective defenses against heat loss is proper insulation. Prevent cold drafts from entering and the loss of heated air through basement headers, which, when left exposed, can make your furnace work harder. Look for a moisture-resistant product offering high thermal performance, such as Roxul Comfortbatt insulation. This type of mineral wool insulation makes installation simple. All that’s needed is a serrated blade or bread knife. Cut the batt to fit the cavity and press into place. The insulation will help improve energy efficiency as soon as it’s in place and provide savings over the lifetime of your home. Comfortbatt can also be used to top or replace old attic insulation. Aim for an R-50 or a depth of 16 inches. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

RELIEVE STRESS THROUGHOUT THE DAY Walk away. The APA notes that taking a break from a stressor is one of a handful of healthy techniques that research has indicated is a successful way to reduce stress, both in the short- and long-term. If a project at work is proving especially stressful, step away for a short period of time to do something else, whether it’s to go for a brief walk or converse with a coworker about something unrelated to the project. Avoiding the stress entirely, especially if it’s a work project or a bill that must be paid, is not the answer. But a short break from the stressor and thinking about it can provide a new perspective and time to calm down.

A TURKEY ALTERNATIVE FOR INTIMATE THANKSGIVING MEALS Serves 6 to 8 12 chicken thighs (about 3 to 4 pounds), bone in Salt and freshly ground black pepper 4 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 tablespoons olive oil 6 shallots, minced 6 cloves garlic, minced 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar 11/2 cups dry white wine 1 tablespoon tomato paste 11/2 cups chicken stock, preferably homemade 1/2 cup chopped Italian parsley Season the chicken generously with salt and pepper to taste. In a large, deep skillet (big enough to hold all chicken fairly close together; or use two skillets), melt 3 tablespoons of the butter in 1 tablespoon of the olive oil over medium-high heat. Brown the chicken for about 8 minutes, turning so both sides get nicely browned. Transfer the chicken to a deep, broad, ovenproof casserole that can go from the oven to the table. Remove the skillet from the heat and pour off most of the fat. Preheat the oven to 375 F. Place the skillet back over medium heat and add the remaining 1 tablespoon butter and 1 tablespoon olive oil. Add the shallots and garlic and cook for about 1 minute, or until they become translucent. Add the vinegar and wine, and stir up the crispy bits that have stuck to the bottom of the pan. Allow the liquids to cook down a bit, stirring occasionally, for about 8 minutes. Whisk in the tomato paste and let the sauce simmer and condense, about 5 minutes more. Then add the chicken stock, a little at a time. Keep stirring to mix well. Pour the sauce over the chicken. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes until the chicken is very tender, turning the chicken pieces halfway through, so that both sides are infused with the sauce. Remove one thigh and cut into it to make sure it is done and no red juices flow from the cut.
