APPRECIATING FRUITCAKE: A much-maligned holiday staple
Members of:
Certain foods are synonymous with the holiday season. Thanksgiving turkey. Holiday cookies. Fruitcake. While those first two make mouths water. fruitcake rarely inspires stomachs to rumble in anticipation. But fruitcake is more than just something to go ignored on holiday serving tables. Fruitcake can be chewy, crunchy and wholesomely rich, making it something holiday hosts will be proud to serve to their holiday guests, who might just come away with a whole new appreciation for fruitcake.

HOLIDAY SHOPPING FOR THOSE WHO SEEMINGLY HAVE IT ALL Consolidate memories. Technology continues to evolve, which means that the way music, videos and photos are captured and stored is always changing. Unless a person has older gear, it’s no longer possible to watch a VHS tape featuring a family member’s graduation ceremony or reprint photographs that are on film negatives. However, shoppers can work with a company that will transfer media onto a new format, such as a thumb drive or in a cloud-based account. This can be a heartfelt gift for someone who wants to reminisce.

WE NEED GOOD TRADES
Rusty was a jack of all trades. From a young age, if it had a motor he took it apart to see how it worked. If it did not run, he could fix it. Plumbing, electrical, auto repair and building; he could do it all. He was like MacGyver. He could take pieces and parts and make them into something. He was rough around the edges, but was always there to help when needed. He is leaving a huge void that he did not even know he filled. He will be sadly missed by all his family and friends.

EASY ‘GREEN’ THANKSGIVING IDEAS Thanksgiving is a holiday to give thanks and share special moments with family and friends. While the original Thanksgiving might have taken place during a time when food was sparse, nowadays Thanksgiving often involves excessive amounts of food, with more food ending up in the garbage than in celebrants’ bellies. The United States Department of Agriculture projects that Americans will throw away more than 200 million pounds of edible turkey meat this Thanksgiving holiday. And Thanksgiving typically ushers in a period of wastefulness, as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says American households produce roughly 25 percent more trash between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day than during the rest of the year. Reducing waste is a worthy goal year-round, but especially so during the holiday season. And accomplishing that goal can be done without sacrificing holiday traditions. THE DANGERS OF BELLY FAT What’s so bad about belly fat? Seeing belly fat as a merely cosmetic concern overlooks the effects it has on overall health. According to the Mayo Clinic, belly fat is not limited to the extra layer of padding just below the skin known as subcutaneous fat. Belly fat also includes visceral fat, which means it extends to deep inside the abdomen and surrounds internal organs. Johns Hopkins Medicine notes that visceral fat in the belly is very close to the liver, which can turn it into cholesterol. From there, the fat goes through the bloodstream and may collect along the walls of the arteries, potentially contributing to a hardening and narrowing of the arteries known as atherosclerosis. The complications of atherosclerosis depends on which arteries are affected, but they can include an assortment of diseases that affect the arteries and a greater risk for aneurysms and chronic kidney disease.
2.
Johns Hopkins Medicine notes that visceral fat is just as harmful for the heart as high blood pressure and smoking. So while efforts to reduce belly fat may initially be embraced to improve appearance, individuals should know that reducing fat in their midsections also can reduce their risk for a host of conditions, some of which are deadly.

Volunteers TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
NEEDED
By Keith Roach, M.D.
Mail-Order Meds Lose Efficacy if They’re Not Stored Properly ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am concerned, and have been for some time, about whether my prescriptions that arrive by mail are compromised, since they sit in vehicles with the sun beating through the windows, heating them up. Also, the plastic bottles in which the prescriptions are stored give off toxic emissions as they “broil” in the sun. The instructions that come with some of the meds warn about heat as well. My pharmacist told me that heat does affect a medication’s effectiveness negatively. So, if this is true, millions of us are taking important medications that are basically not doing the job. After all, the meds that arrive at pharmacies come in hot vehicles, too. What’s your take? -- J.Z. ANSWER: All medicines should be stored in a cool, dark place, as direct sunlight and heat can damage their effectiveness. Studies have proven that medicines sent by mail order can indeed get out of their published temperature range. While this happens most often in mailboxes, I understand your point about medications “broiling” in hot temperatures during the shipment itself. Liquid medicines, hormones and nitroglycerin are among the most sensitive. Medicines that need to be dosed exactly, such as transplant rejection medicines, biologicals, and seizure medicines, are also particularly likely to cause problems if they are damaged during shipping. Although some medicines are supposed to be shipped in packaging with cold packs and insulation, this isn’t always the case. I recommend using a local pharmacy, but many people have prescription plans that require them to use mail order. Many states have requirements about customers using retail pharmacies. If that’s not the case for you, try to make sure that the medicine will be delivered when you are available to receive it. If you have a temperature-sensitive medicine, such as the ones I mention above (you can ask your pharmacist about others), request that your mail-order pharmacy sends it in special packaging during warm weather. You might also consider having them shipped to a place where they will be put into a temperature-controlled environment right away. ***

Kudos to you! Learning that the long-time GVPS Circulation Manager is retiring I feel the need to send my best wishes for her retirement and many, many thanks for a job well done. I’ve had occasion, a few times in the past, to pass on questions to her (I was a long-time employee at GVPS). Each time the situation was taken care of promptly. Good luck to you, Shari! Audrey What a wonderful gesture A big thank you to the thoughtful gentlemen who handed out cards at ALDIs in Geneseo wishing us a wonderful Thanksgiving and tucking $50 bills inside. I was blown away. I’m so thankful to see that wonderful and selfless people are present in a hostile, at times, world. Bless you! You made our thanksgiving!
Our Turn to Pay it Backward I was disappointed to read the rant from my fellow senior citizen complaining about paying school taxes. I need to remind the writer that when our children were in school, seniors citizens at that time paid to support them. The medicare and social security benefits that we receive come from the taxes that current workers pay. Think about how our lives would be affected if young people questioned why they should support baby boomers and refused to pay their medicare and social security taxes. Current workers are paying it forward to help us and it is our duty to pay it backward to help the students of today become successful productive citizens. Why can’t we get along? Every week it seems that there is somebody complaining about their neighbors. Why can’t we all follow the Golden Rule of treating others as you would want to be treated? Some of the things people do to their neighbors are inconsiderate while some of the things people complain about their neighbors doing are trivial. How about thinking about your actions and how it may affect your neighbors before you act. I’m always touched by the neighbors who mow lawns and do snow removal to make their neighbors lives easier as it is evidence of how our neighborhoods should be. Why don’t we all begin next week with the goal of making our neighborhood a better place? GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Here’s a Tip * Don’t throw away that damaged garden hose. Here are three great uses: 1. Use as a weather strip along the bottom of your garage door. 2. Use sections to protect the blades on your ice skates. 3.Use as a safety edge on your saws in the shop. Cut to fit and slip it over the blade. * “If a small screw keeps coming loose on something, remove it, paint it with clear nail polish and rescrew quickly. This often does the trick. Makes it more grippy.” -- I.W. in Minnesota * Defog your mirror with shaving cream. Smear it over the entire surface and then wipe away with a clean towel. Keep cleaning until clear. It works for at least two weeks -- NO FOG! (c) 2023 King Features Synd., Inc.

EXPLORING SOLAR ELECTRICITY Solar panels are seen more and more on roofs of residential homes and even some businesses. Due in part to more aggressive marketing by solar energy companies, as well as greater awareness by customers, solar energy has become increasingly popular in recent years. The Solar Energy Industries Association® reports that solar energy in the United States is booming. The association offers that, since the passage of The Solar Investment Tax Credit in 2006, solar has experienced a compound annual growth rate of more than 60 percent. While many might assume that environmental preservation is the driving force behind the growing popularity of solar energy, it’s actually the financial benefits of solar energy that are leading the way. One Block Off the Grid polled nearly 200 solar homeowners to learn more about their motivations for going solar. Roughly 75 percent would not have gone solar if there was no economic benefit to doing so. A number of people who have switched to solar say they are getting a high rate of return on the investment. The average electricity bill a person saw prior to solar energy hovered around $177 a month. After the conversion, bills were now as low as $55. LAWN & LANDSCAPING BUDGET-FRIENDLY WAYS TO UPGRADE A LANDSCAPE Plant to create privacy. Homeowners spent more time at home than ever before during the pandemic, and some might have grown tired of seeing what their neighbors are up to. Fencing might be the first solution homeowners consider when looking to make their landscapes more private. But new fencing installation can be expensive, costing homeowners between $1,667 and $4,075 on average, according to BobVila.com. A more costly and natural solution is to plant trees around the perimeter. Speak with a local landscaping professional, who can survey the property to see which trees might thrive and provide the privacy homeowners want.

NETWORKING STRATEGIES FOR THE DIGITAL AGE Personalize your connections. The days of sharing a post-work drink with a colleague may be over. But networking in the digital age need not be impersonal. When using professional networking sites such as LinkedIn, personalize the messages you send to other professionals when inviting them to join your network. Use the message to briefly introduce yourself and explain your connection before explaining why you want the person to become part of your network. Welcome any questions and warmly thank them for their time. This personal touch can make you stand out in a digital sea of people, many of whom simply want to add other professionals to their network without necessarily making genuine connections.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Hold That Turkey Leg: It’s the Annual Thanksgiving Pet Safety Brief DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Can you remind me what foods are unsafe to give to pets? I know onions are bad for dogs, but I’m not clear on other ingredients. My dog loves scraps from the table, and I want to make sure my Thanksgiving dinner guests don’t feed him something dangerous. -- Manuel C., San Antonio, Texas DEAR MANUEL: It may be difficult to keep tabs on all of your dinner guests, so consider placing your dog in a room or in his kennel during the meal and then rewarding him after with some tasty leftovers. When he does get his treat, make sure that it doesn’t include the following ingredients: onions, garlic, raisins or avocado. Turkey is fine; take the skin off to remove extra salt and seasonings that might upset his stomach. Avoid feeding him stuffing. The mashed potatoes should be plain, and hold the gravy. A little apple or pumpkin pie should be fine, but keep him away from chocolate. And try to limit the amount of fat in the leftovers, because too much can cause some messy digestive problems. The same rules apply to cats, by the way. Because they’re small, they may have a more severe reaction to ingredients like grapes, avocados or onions. It can be difficult to keep track of what your pet is eating during the busy holiday season, especially during big meals. That’s why I recommend placing pets in a separate room until people are done eating and the food is put away out of reach. You still need to control their diet, and you can’t always catch Aunt Gladys sneaking peanut butter cups to the dog. Enjoy your holiday, and thanks for keeping your pet safe!
