GIFTS FOR PEOPLE WHO HELP YOU YEAR-ROUND Educators and Caregivers Educators and caregivers, which includes teachers, babysitters and daycare staff, do a lot for children. Their efforts should be recognized during the holiday season. School systems and daycare facilities may have rules in place governing which items staff can accept, so inquire about such policies in advance of the holiday season. When gifting babysitters, make sure gifts are age-appropriate. If a babysitter is a minor, cash may make for the best gift. For teachers and daycare workers, consider a gift certificate to a well-regarded local eatery or a school supplies store, as many teachers purchase classroom supplies with their own money.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: “When I was young, I admired clever people. Now that I am old, I admire kind people.” -- Abraham Joshua Heschel

HOLIDAY BAKING POINTERS Baking is a science and the ingredients are used in a ratio to produce a desired chemical reaction while cooking. Do not substitute ingredients, and measure each addition carefully. Scooping packs flour down — potentially causing you to use more than the recipe calls for. Instead, spoon the flour into your measuring cup gently and use a straight edge to level it out. Even better, use a scale and metric measurements to ensure exact amounts of wet and dry ingredients.

We service all makes and models.

Certain ingredients, like butter and eggs, are temperature-dependent. Cold butter in biscuits helps them to rise up flaky and delicious. Eggs brought to room temperature enable the emulsification process to work more readily. The difference in temperature can mean a completely different chemical reaction, so follow the recipe accordingly.

www.americanequipmentllc.com HOW TO SUPPORT BUSINESSES DURING MANDATORY RESTRICTIONS ORDER DELIVERY: It’s still possible to enjoy foods from your favorite local restaurants. Many restaurants that had not previously done so have begun to offer delivery services, be it curbside or at-home, and this can provide a great respite for families who have had to cook three meals a day at home for their entire families for extended periods of time. Curbside delivery has made it possible to get takeout meals without compromising social distancing recommendations. Tis the Season

Purchase an oven thermometer, set your oven to 350 F, the standard baking temperature, and see what the thermometer reads. If it is different, adjust cooking times accordingly or have the oven repaired. Use unsalted butter. Most recipes will call for unsalted butter so you aren’t adding unwanted sodium to the recipe, affecting dough consistency and flavor.

Make a fresh cut to remove about a 1/2-inch thick disk of wood from the base of the trunk before putting the tree in the stand. Make the cut perpendicular to the stem axis. Don’t cut the trunk at an angle, or into a v-shape, which makes it far more difficult to hold the tree in the stand and also reduces the amount of water available to the tree.

PREPARE VEHICLES FOR HARSH WEATHER Old batteries should be replaced before winter begins. Without a strong, properly functioning battery, engines cannot turn over. Most batteries last between three and five years. However, extreme cold can compromise batteries, especially those that have been around awhile. Batteries are made up of acid and water, and cold temperatures can freeze the water, thereby affecting battery performance. According to AAA’s Automotive Research Center, at 32 F, the average battery loses 35 percent of its strength. Newer batteries can be protected by starting the vehicle each day to warm up and recharge the battery. Let the car run for at least 10 minutes if you cannot take an extended drive.

HIKING: Hiking is a fun activity that can be enjoyed nearly year-round, but it’s especially enjoyable in the fall. That’s because few things in nature are as captivating as a park or forest w hen the fall foliage is in full bloom. Early fall also boasts ideal temperatures for hiking, as the mercury likely w on’t rise enough or sink low enough to produce the kind of extreme temperatures that can compromise a hiker’s afternoon. Instead, fall temperatures tend to be mild and comfortable, allow ing hikers to fully enjoy their often beautiful surroundings.

GENERAL CONTRACTING WHAT TO DO WHEN A PROJECT STALLS Honestly assess whether or not you can finish the job. Do-it-yourselfers may have the abilities to complete a project, but they should not let their pride get in the way of their ultimate goal, which is the completion of the project. In addition to money, time or lack thereof, is often the culprit behind stalled projects. Homeowners with full-time jobs, families or both may not be able to find the time to complete a job in a timely fashion. If the project has been stuck in neutral and no sudden windfall of free time is on the horizon, start contacting contractors to finish the job for you.

Contact us today! 442.2030 ext. 752 www.pathstoneenergyinfo.com TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE AND CONNECTED DURING A MOVE (NAPSI) — Planning a move can be stressful, but planning a move in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic brings a new set of challenges. Stay safe and connected with some smart pre-move planning; here are some tips: Follow Approved Protocols — If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches. Safely Stay Connected — New work-from-home protocols and online schooling mean reliable Internet connectivity is more important than ever. Prior to your move, SmartMove can connect you to your local provider and help arrange new Touchless Installs that let you safely connect your tech services yourself. Cable companies deliver equipment with step-by-step activation information so you can set up your system on your own, or with support over the phone, online, through chat functionality or video tutorials. In most cases, no technician will need to enter your home. Keep in Touch & Maintain Daily Routines — You may be staying in more, but don’t forget to take a break from unpacking boxes. Use your new online connection to find delivery services to help stock your pantry and fridge and refill prescriptions. Your new house will feel more like home if you take time to watch your favorite shows, maintain your exercise program or explore online courses that can help you discover new talents or resume old hobbies. Don’t forget to connect with friends through group video chats or viewing parties—you can even take your friends and family on a virtual tour of your new place! GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

HEAP Recipients Automatically Eligible: Income guidelines are: Household Monthly Income

On the whole I take it that middle age is a happier period than youth. In the entire circle of the year there are no days so delightful as those of a fine October, when the trees are bare to the mild heavens, and the red leaves bestrew the road, and you can feel the breath of winter morning and evening—no days so calm, so tenderly solemn, and with such a reverent meekness in the air.

* Five ways to keep yourself from turning up the thermostat this winter: Put on a sweater; have a nice bowl of soup or stew; wear slippers or thick nonskid socks, grab a comfy blanket; snuggle up with someone special. * “If you bathe in a tub, try rubbing on bath oil before getting in the tub. You will get greater coverage and more moisturizing power from your bath oil. And at this time of year, who doesn’t need that?” -- M.E. in Washington * “Here’s a great way to use Christmas cards from last year: Trace a child’s hand on the back of the pictures. Cut them out and use them to make a wreath for the front door. Or, make small jigsaw puzzles for young children to play with. Any good, detailed artwork on a card front will do. Make squiggly lines in the fashion of a jigsaw puzzle, then cut out. It helps if the cardstock is good and thick.” -- M.M. in Utah * “To keep light bulbs from sticking in the socket, apply petroleum jelly to the base of the bulb before screwing it into the fixture.” -- B.D. in Virginia * Here’s an oldie but a goodie: Add a few drops of water to votive cups before adding a candle. The wax will float on the water, and when the candle burns down, it won’t get stuck in the votive glass.

HOME IMPROVEMENT

JIM McMANUS

PITCH IN AND SAVE MONEY Salvage: Removing debris and items that will no longer be needed once the renovation is complete is another way homeowners can pitch in. Homeowners remodeling their kitchens may be replacing their existing stoves and refrigerators and hoping to donate these items. In such instances, driving the items to the donation site or arranging for them to be picked up rather than taken off the premises by the contractor or his employees can cut labor costs, as it allows laborers to keep working toward the end goal rather than requiring them to leave the work site to drop unwanted items off.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Pets Must Adapt to Winter Weather --Q: My springy little mutt, “Sandy,” just loves winter! Whenever it snows, she runs right outside to play. We had an early snowstorm just before Halloween, and I let her out to play. When she came back in after about an hour, she was whimpering and limping. I didn’t see any cuts on her paws, but she was shivering quite a bit. I wrapped her in a towel and held her on my lap for a while. I guessing she got cold and scared, but that has never happened to her before. She usually stays outside for at least an hour and I have to call her back in. -- Daryl J., Leominster, Massachusetts A: You did the right thing by checking Sandy as she came inside and warming her up. If she doesn’t display any unusual behavior going forward, then your first guess is correct, that she got mild hypothermia from being out in the snow. Pets need to acclimate to changing temperatures in the fall and winter. A cold snap in the fall can feel more bitter than colder but steady winter temperatures. Other factors can also put a dog at risk for hypothermia. Make sure that Sandy always has water in her bowl, and that water is available during her outside romps, as hydration helps to maintain body temperature. Excessively wet or snowy conditions can speed heat loss. Providing a sheltered spot outdoors will give Sandy a place to take breaks and dry out. A cold injury can take longer to recover from than we realize. For now, limit Sandy’s time outside in the cold to about 30 minutes, and check on her every 10 minutes. If she is shivering or whimpering, bring her inside. And if you have continuing concerns, don’t hesitate to contact the veterinarian.

A tribute to my beloved Pomeranian Sacha who has passed after 17 years

In-Kennel Webcams!

Howlywood Kennels 7856 Rt. 5&20 • Bloomfield 585-657-7227 www.howlywood.com

Pets are a big part of people’s lives. They bring joy to young and old alike. With the young, they play and keep the kids out of trouble. For the old they bring a smile to their face, or pep them up. For the sick, they make people feel better and even improve how people heal and remember things long past. With the pandemic going on for the past 8 months or so, a lot of people have had to work from home or stay out of the limeight of the freedom of going out in the world as we have in the past. As a senior citizen I had a head start on this social distancing. Others had it forced upon them. If you have a pet, your pet becomes more responsive to having people around them 24/7. They can become depressed once things can go back to what we use to call normal. This can also be the case on the human end when a person losses a pet that was with them 24/7 for many years. The pet is more than a pet and more of a family member. The loss can be as bad as losing a family member with 2 legs. The pet (in my case a little Pomeranian that was with me for 17 years) was there without asking for more than a little love and kindness. In return they give you unconditional love and respect. You go out for a few minutes or hour, and when you come back you are greeted as if you just got home from being gone for a week. So you need to remember, when the time comes to leave the house for half the day for work or whatever is part of your plate, you need to think of your pet and what will go through their minds. Start by leading up to time spent away. When you leave the house, go out in the yard or go for a ride for small periods so the pet learns you will be coming back. If you know someone who losses a pet, show them some compassion. Give them some kind words; it will help them in their grieving, even more so if the are older.

Cats are coveted for a variety of reasons, including their regal countenance and graceful movements. Many people are surprised to learn that cats boast several characteristics that make them wonderful pets.

Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Count Your

Blessings

BY STEVE HARRISON

I

t’s that time of year when we give “Thanks” for all that we have. Rather than recount the list of things we surely didn’t need in 2020, we could give thanks for those challenges that may have given us a new reason to be thankful. If we can take a moment to reflect rather than react, we can appreciate this saying: “Storms make trees take deeper roots.”

Recently, in a Saturday Evening Post article, there was an interview with a girl who had taken a very bad fall and had become a quadriplegic. Asked by the interviewer, “Are you thankful?” and she replied, “Oh yes.” She then recounted why she was and how she overcame her circumstances. She counted her blessings. Not once, but twice a day, first in the morning when she awoke and at night before she went to sleep. It was not easy at first because she began dwelling on her injury, but slowly, she

thought of all the good in her life, even life itself. Soon, her attitude began to improve, and her outlook and hopes for a better life changed radically. (Her original prognosis was to be bedridden for the rest of her life.) She went back to school and graduated with a degree in science, then earned her master’s degree, and finally, went to work for the United Spinal Association as director. She also works with Google, Verizon, Microsoft and tech industry leaders, helping design autonomous vehicles and augmented reality for the disabled. What a remarkable story of courage and fortitude! And she attributes so much of her transformation into being thankful for who she is, and the blessings she has. Let’s be sure to count ours.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Send out a little cheer the year we all can use it most. As 2020 comes to a close, our current climate still keeps us at a distance from one another, leaving a gap FaceTime can’t quite fill. Now, with little other choice, we’ve become reliant on the technology we may have taken for granted or wanted a break from, and perhaps bringing back some nostalgia right in time for the holidays is just what we need.

There’s no better feeling of holiday cheer than opening up a holiday card, and our team at Printing by Penny Lane is here to help! We have an array of cards for the winter months, be it for holidays including Christmas, Hanukkah, or general greetings. Call us at 585.226.8111 for a custom design or order online at www.printingbypennylane.com!

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Can They Give Gifts to Their Doctor? --DEAR DR. ROACH: We are very fond of our family doctor. I was in to see him the other day, and it came up in conversation that he was going to be getting married. We would like to acknowledge this event in his life with either a lovely card or a small gift. I know the old-school way of thinking is to never do things that are so personal when it comes to your physician. Do you think that still holds true today? -- N.W. ANSWER: Physicians are human beings, and a thoughtful card is always appreciated. Gifts can sometimes be OK, but the American Medical Association has some guidelines for physicians on accepting gifts. I agree with them and you might find them helpful: • Be sensitive to the size of the gift: Inappropriately large gifts should not be accepted. • Do not let a gift influence patient care. • Decline a gift that would present an emotional or financial hardship to the patient’s family. • Consider suggesting a charitable contribution in lieu of a gift. I would add that sometimes rejecting a gift can be hurtful, and if accepting a gift conforms to the guidelines, I generally accept it with thanks.

DR. ROACH WRITES: A recent column on easy bruising in older adults prompted several readers to recommend specialized makeup products to cover the discolored areas. That is not something I had considered, and I appreciate the recommendation. Another reader recommended dry skin brushing, but I could not find good evidence that this helps with skin discoloration.

Nice Gesture Recently, my 85-year-old wife went to [local business]. In a rainy downpour, she tried to park between two cars, one of which was not quite straight. She scraped the fender of the car. No one was around, so she went shopping. When she came out, some lady said, “I saw you. I saw you hit that car.” Out came [local business] security and a policeman. They exchanged licenses and insurance cards. Later that day, the woman, whose car had been scratched arrived at

our front door. She had a bouquet of flowers. She had noticed on the driver’s license that it was my wife’s birthday and so brought her a gift to calm her down. Very grateful! I just wanted to give a HUGE Thank You to the Angel that turned in my purse from the Batavia TOPS parking lot on November 2nd. Especially in the age of COVID-19 and with people hurting during the holidays, I am very, very grateful!

Shout Out! A shout out to our wonderfully talented graphics department here at Genesee Valley Penny Saver. While “essential” they, for the most part, have been working remotely and haven’t missed a beat! Churning out incredible advertising, graphic layouts for our printing and promotional product customers and always with a “can do” attitude. Our team is dedicated to helping our customers, reach theirs! Well done and a Very Happy Thanksgiving to you!! Steve Harrison, Publisher.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Using the Internet to Enrich Our Lives With most of us spending most of our days at home, it’s time for us to take advantage of the internet. Here are some resources that can enrich our lives. Inquire at the local senior center about any exercise classes online. Some classes will be live on Zoom and others will be videos that the instructors record and post on the center’s website. If they’re not hosting any classes, search online for “seniors exercise at home” and look for some that are produced by other senior centers. Virtual art classes can open up new areas of interest and reveal talents you didn’t know you had. Better yet, if you’re a beginner or are exploring a new art medium, look for videos that you can review over and over. Look online for free art classes online for seniors. Exercise and art aren’t the only free classes you’ll find online. Yoga and tai chi, sewing, baking and cake decorating, creative writing, a new language -- if it can be done online, there’s a class for it somewhere. And don’t forget Class Central (www.classcentral.com). Check the website for a list of MOOCS (massive open online courses). There 15,000 different free and low-cost classes in its searchable database from colleges and universities around the world. Imagine taking a philosophy course from the University of Edinburgh or Introduction to Classical Music via Yale University. (I put art history into its search box and got back 165 results.) Read the details for any class you’re considering. It will tell you if the class is self-paced, whether it’s free to audit, the class level and how much time per week you can expect to spend on the work, as well as reviews from other students. If you’re unsure of your internet skills, search for “internet basics for seniors” on Google.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

For example, a roast chicken can be broken down and the meat can be used for fajitas on another night. Leftover tomato sauce and meatballs from a Sunday dinner can be turned into an impromptu chili with the addition of beans and peppers.
